Day two of testing in Barcelona, and what a lot we have had to discuss so far. The first day, with all the teams in the same place, running their 2009 cars, was particularly interesting.

  • Toro Rosso became the last team to unveil their 2009 car with Buemi and Bourdais unveiling the STR4 at Barcelona. When it hit the track, there was something particularly high about the rear wing that bugged me, but then, don't they all? Still, it was good to see STR on the timesheets with the same season's car as everyone else.
  • Of course the talk of the first day was Button who headed to the top of the timesheets for a large portion of the session. He ended up fourth, but certainly garnered some headlines for the team. Mostly, it was just good to see them in action, it wouldn't have mattered if they had come last. I'm sure they're all glad they didn't though.
  • It happened to be McLaren who were last, though, and it seems to be a severe case of sandbagging. There's talk of lifting off on the straights, and running deliberately slowly. Whether that is the case or not, we already know that testing times are not to be relied upon. They are fun to speculate with though, so I wonder how fast McLaren really are?

That should do it for today. There'll be a whole heap more to discuss today as testing continues, assuming the weather holds in Spain. As usual, I will see you in the comments.

Well done finally to Brawn Racing for getting a car on the track, it certainly does 'nt seem to have been an easy ride for them. next thing they've got to do is get some sponsors to cover up all that white bodywork. McLaren definately sandbagging, money always talks in F1 and they've got heaps of it so I don't expect to see them anywhere but at the front on 29th march.

I'm sure you are right about McLaren Paul (Go Lewis!). While I am happy that Brawn GP will be on the grid, I fear that their future will be clouded in doubt for a good long while to come. I hope I am wrong.

earlier i read in the Q&A article with Jenson on autosport that at the moment they only have the one car, but by melbourne they'll have two. However he did state that they are gonna have to try and keep them out of the walls... i'm kinda hoping that they are not going to do a super aguri on us mid season... atm i shall remain optimistic and happy :D

I don't think you have anything to worry about on tha score. The only reason that they are short of cars is because they didn't have time to build more after the deal was done. They will survive the season. They need to do enough on all fronts to make sure that they get a budget for 2010.

As in 'not easy being green'? Or do you mean in colour? I can see how moving from going round and round in sort-a circles would make you sick, but surely F1 cars/tracks don't have that effect...

... ohhhhh - unless the sickness is for the (inevitable? or is that too mean? Erk, need to be careful or I'll be in trouble there, lol) lack of a podium for most/all of the season? Or the size of the bill for the superlicences? Or too much of the associated beverage??? (not the cola, that's definately not sickening, well not unless you drink it past 6pm in which case it could be as sleep will not be forthcoming at a sensible time... and I'm going all Virginia Woolf so I'll shut up now!)?

Hey that's what the driver's and commnetator's called him back in his Indycar days. I think it had something to do with being connected to a Rainbow, but I am not sure. Also may have been how he made the fans feel after the race was over, as he had a bit of a bad habit of crashing into crowd favourites on the run down lap after collecting his checkered flag...

Why has Seb B 1 taken over from Seb B 2 in the STR?

  • lou10/03/2009 at 15:42

To be honest, I think I’m becoming enamoured to Brawn GP as well..

funny how a change in name and management can change people's minds about a team. i mean to me i've always loved the team itself and never really been bothered by it's management.

i love the globe :) i've been a couple of times and it's brilliant. i can imagine it would be a little cold today though.

I am getting a bit worried about Macca though...

  • Lukeh10/03/2009 at 16:22

Guys and Girls, watch this the whole way through

Oh my god! That was fantastic! Didn't expect that with lewis...

Rubens had some probs this morning, car broke down, not sure how they’re doing now

Nooo not good... Lou was telling me last night how Jenson mentioned the team only have 1 or 2 cars at the moment, not sure about engines though (of course if it's an engine problem) but hope the team got it sorted.

Need to catch up on all the comments and news, just got in after a wierd day where going to Uni without my lecturer turning up ended up in me getting myself locked out despite taking my keys to uni and now I've got back in after going to watch Watchmen until waiting for someone to come home. Phew.

    And Watchmen rocked!

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 16:24

LewHam picking up his MBE today.

LewHam & SeaBass, what's going on today?

Have we been taken over by the Formula Pod guys? :D

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 16:24

Lucky swine! It's more than good enough in normal viewing but I imagine in IMAX stylee it should be terrific :)

  • RG10/03/2009 at 16:58

    Excused from testing today then

If I was the boss, I'd pick it up for him, then run off to the Swedish mountains and live a new life.

But of course, I am RG.

    Afternoon all.

“Is one sandbagging as it seems the McLaren is struggling in testing?”

That would be quite intresting, the queen liking f1, thinking of this tag, 'The Queen loves sidepodcast', we can bend the truth can't we?

My God - Buemi has a face only a mother could love!

Why does Piquet look like he is some sort of King looking over everyone?

    ITS SO COOL!

Lucky, now if I can just post me making an oversized lego BMW F1 car, wonder if i'll get the same.

Other half has ticket to see a Shakespeare play at the Globe in London Should be entertaining, never been to the Globe before.

    What are/have you/will/have see(ing)

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 17:00

I think he's just away with the fairies - would explain a lot!

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 17:02

    Wonder what the Queen said?

“Is one sandbagging as it seems the McLaren is struggling in testing?”

I bet she does RonSpeak too so Lewis was able to have quite a nice chat there it seems.

I'd be interested in what old Phil has to say about some of the F1 crowd ;)

    I'm going to say yes

  • Steven Roy10/03/2009 at 17:09

    Run Le Seb! Run!

Looks like Adrian Newey's tight packaging job is not compatible with a Ferrari engine that produces a lot of heat.

  • Steven Roy10/03/2009 at 17:10

I’d call Sebastién Bourdais “SeaBass” in deference to his American nickname and Sebastien Buemi “Buem(i)” unless he has a secondary nickname (other than “SeaBass” or “Olivier”) I don’t know about?

Why do they have a problem this year? It's not like they are not used to having a multitude of Sebs.

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 17:11

The odd thing is the number plate is from Ingolstadt where the Audi Headquarters are.

...not that it will go wrong!

  • lou10/03/2009 at 18:43

That is because it is. It will be interesting to see how it compares to the Peugeot. Interesting that Audi have stuck with the open top rather than put a lid on it like Peugeot.

Sebring is the week before Australia though

    what’s Sebring?

The second-most important Sports car race after Le Mans. It's held on an airfield circuit in Florida and is a 12-hour day/night race. Because of the bumpy surface it is considered to be rougher on the cars than the Le Mans event, so all the serious Le Mans competitors enter this race to see how their cars will fare come June...

  • Steven Roy10/03/2009 at 19:46

Lets be fair, would anyone trust anyone with a highly expensive car in the hands of someone quite some distance away, with something which is not as good as a steering wheel would be and held by someone who should be doing something better than that.

What makes you think it was an F1 car. It had F1 bodywork on it and a steering wheel but it could be some battery powered contraption with the driver laying face down and looking through the nose.

I just got an email from Versus (actually it was a marketing company on their behalf) asking me to promote their coverage of IndyCar in the US. I'm quite flattered and impressed that they contacted me despite a) my being in Britain and b) mine being a tiny little blog with only 18 readers. I'm impressed they are reaching out to bloggers at all, so someone is switched on.

Somehow I can't see any British/European TV company doing that about F1, GP2, WTCC, etc. I can't see ESPN doing it either.

Since they asked very nicely, used my name and mentioned my being in the UK in their email, I might write a little something nearer the race. If it had been a blanket mass-email I wouldn't bother.

  • Pat W10/03/2009 at 20:43

Plus on a purely selfish note, my traffic jumped as soon as I wrote about BBC F1 coverage so maybe I'll get more eyeballs. :-)

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 21:19

you can modify them if you by the full acrobat product.

True, but the average Joe won't fork out for that

  • Andy+Taylor10/03/2009 at 21:19

Bugger, are you not a genius then? ;)

Not quite yet. I've no idea, the installer errors out immediately. I've tried downloading it several times, but interestingly the only version available is 1.5.1 - you mentioned 1.5.7?

  • Dank10/03/2009 at 21:19

Did you get the odds fixed?

Just checked, and yup, still the same odds. Gone down to 14/1 if you were to place the same bet again now.

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 21:19

    yes you should.

    Stop it :)

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 21:22

    i don’t understand betting so i assume that’s a shock…

Simply, the larger the number next to the "1", the less likely the bookies think it'll happen. 500-1 = less likely than 3-1

And, 500-1 means bet £1, receive £500 if you win

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 21:23

the only version available is 1.5.1 - you mentioned 1.5.7?

    I erred, 'tis 1.5.1 indeed

  • Bassano Clapper10/03/2009 at 21:23

  • Andy+Taylor10/03/2009 at 21:25

And, 500-1 means bet £1, receive £500 if you win

Also, an each way bet is £10 on Vettel to win and another £10 bet for him to come second or third (or lower) which pays out a lower amount.

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)10/03/2009 at 21:26

Plus it's tax free. In the old days you could either pay betting tax on your stake or the winnings. Clever move by the government there, because no one would want to give them a slice of their winnings now would they?

Details on Autosport’s re-design which is out this Thurs.

"Bradley Lord, the features editor of Autosport's monthly sister title F1 Racing, will write a weekly new column."

    brilliant!

do you think that'll filter down to the autosport.com journal, or am i going to have to buy this again?

  • Dank10/03/2009 at 21:40

do you think that’ll filter down to the autosport.com journal, or am i going to have to buy this again?

I tend to find that features in the magazine one week, find their way into the subscriber's section on the website the next. So highly likely I guess?

  • Steven Roy10/03/2009 at 21:40

I am amazed Autosport only sells 34,000 copies. I would have put the figure a lot higher than that.

For a weekly publication that's not too shabby though. That equates to over 100,000 copies a month?

that number is over a period of four weeks, isn't it? not seven days.

  • Steven Roy10/03/2009 at 21:45

    Brawnda? that’s a new one

I think of it as a Brawn Honda so Brawnda seemed appropriate. I still want to find out who owns what in that team because we have not been told anything yet. One thing is certain. Brawn does not own the whole thing.

  • Steven Roy10/03/2009 at 21:45

Other half has ticket to see a Shakespeare play at the Globe in London Should be entertaining, never been to the Globe before.

i love the globe i’ve been a couple of times and it’s brilliant. i can imagine it would be a little cold today though.

Ooooooh. 2 hours... 'Twas on the nippy side.

Romeo and Juliet - Never realised that the Elizabethans had to cope with Emo's too. Juliet was a right miserable cow wasn't she?

Still, the Globe is an amazing place. Got to arrange one of the tours now.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but on Brawn GP's testing pdf that Lou mentioned, there are a series of company names(?) at the bottom:

    http://www.brawngp.com/pdf/bcn03_05web_2.pdf

    They are:

Bridgestone, PerkinElmer, Ciber, Cytec, Endless, IBM, Laverstoke Park, STL

    Possible Sponsors?????

    PerkinElmer: A green/health company.

    Ciber: "International System Integration Consultancy"

Cytec: "A global specialty chemicals and materials company"

Endless: There are a few 'endless' websites, but I'm guessing it's the Japanese brake company... http://www.endless-brake.info/

    Laverstoke Park: An organic/biodynamic farm.

STL: Not sure about this one...

  • Steven Roy11/03/2009 at 03:45

Laverstoke Park sounds like Jody Scheckter's organic farm which supplied Honda. To be fair it is more like a county/university than a farm.

    Perkin Elmer make scientific equipment.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but on Brawn GP’s testing pdf that Lou mentioned, there are a series of company names(?) at the bottom:

Interesting. A bit of a hotchpotch and quite a few that aren't strictly F1-related...

By the way, what is the best way to comment from an iPod Touch? Doohickey or something else?

I am currently commentoling from the train I take for my morning commute. Now I know that it works, I think I'll have my usual nap now. See ya soon :-)

James Allen at Barcelona (Day 2)

OK - if he says that McLaren are having problems and not sandbagging then I'm officially worried :-(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)11/03/2009 at 07:21

Joe Saward on the Structure of Brawn GP

Hmm... interesting stuff about bwin and how Marlboro bought the rights to the whole of the Ferrari, only to sell off the sponsorship to get the money back. I never knew that's how thety got around the tobacco ban, but then I shouldn't be surprised that something sneaky and rule-circumventing was done on the red cars!

Maybe Brawn will do what Mclaren did when they ended their contract with West Tobacco. Rather than just run Johnnie Walker sponsorship the next day, they ran 'clean cars' in between as JW don't associate with Tobacco. I wonder if BrawnGP will do the same if Honda don't want to be associated with bwin?

  • Alianora La Canta11/03/2009 at 08:43

Force India van, eh? Doesn’t that count as a clue to whereabouts you guys are today? Somewhere around Silverstone/Northamptonshire methinks

Oh! I interpreted the German license plates as meaning they were in Munich! {Comment #74

Maybe they're the vehicle of choice for some of the eight Mercedes people that (according to F1 Racing March 2009 edition) have been embedded into the Force India team this year?

  • Alianora La Canta11/03/2009 at 08:53

    Why do they have a problem this year? It’s not like they are not used to having a multitude of Sebs. {Comment #115}

Last year, one was French and one German, so "Le Seb" and "Der Seb" was fine. Also, "Bourdais" and "Vettel" sound pretty different on the radio. The trouble is that Sebastien Buemi is from the French part of Switzerland, so to be correct, it would be "Le Seb" and, er... "Le Seb". Bourdais and Buemi are fairly similar in sound (although not hugely so), and also Toro Rosso would be lost if it couldn't make up an amusing nickname for each of its drivers.

The question is how did they solve the problem last year when Sebastien Buemi was a tester?

  • Alianora La Canta11/03/2009 at 08:55

    The odd thing is the number plate is from Ingolstadt where the Audi Headquarters are. {Comment #119}

Has there been some trading between Mercedes and Audi going on?!?

    what’s happened to Wurz? is he just doing to fade into the distance now? {Comment #160}

Last I heard, Alex Wurz was in sportscars (or at least Le Mans). No idea what he's doing with regard to F1 this year, if anything.

  • me11/03/2009 at 10:42

    doohickey.

STL: Not sure about this one…

I think its most likely that several of those are supplying 'stuff' to the team rather than actual money. PerkinElmer do a rather nifty line in fibreoptic rigs :-)

Laverstoke Park is indeed Jody Scheckter’s place, suppliers of mainly meat to some pretty swanky places (the sort of places you'd need an F1 drivers/owners income to go to more than once in a lifetime!). They also have staff who specialise in the supply of 'tailored diets' to sportspersons. As organic meat suppliers go, they are considered at the 'reasonably priced' end of the online market as well. (looking at the website, they seem to be looking for a CFO atm as well...)

STL are a telephony/communications firm. To quote an industry directory "STL has close connections with the F1 industry, supplying lines, services and calls to a number of F1 teams. " They list Honda and Force India amoungst their client base :-)
