It's tough being an F1 fan at the moment. If you're on Twitter, all you need is the hashtag #f1happyplace and you'll be fine. Whilst you're having a look at that, here are some SPC things to chat about:

  • Once again, Jake Humphrey has provided some great insights into the life of a BBC anchor, and what one gets up to when there's no racing to get excited about. Good to know that he misses F1 when it's not around.
  • F1 Punter has some thoughts about the upcoming race and the chances of seeing the safety car. We know that last year's German GP helped Piquet to his first F1 podium, all thanks to the SC, but this time we're at the Nurburgring rather than Hockenheim, so how will that affect things?
  • On the very sore subject of politics, Maverick has some interesting thoughts on the Pitlane Fanatic Blog, and Joe has also summed it all up in a great post, and really... in the title itself - SOS in morse code..

That should do it for now. It's really tme to start turning our attention to the German GP (the Preview Digest will help), so let us know what you are expecting from the upcoming race. I'll see you in the comments.

hi all (at least those who are still here...)

Hi Guille, bye Lou. (I know it was a while ago now). After procrastinating all night (all week?) I finally sat down and wrote the first instalment of my Goodwood review. I've decided one post isn't going to be enough.

Cool, more Goodwood photos! Nice writeup too. Not quite like being there, but I really love all the photography people have done. Brilliant.

Wow! Allan Moffat's Boss 302 Mustang. I LOVE that car. Talk about blast from the past. Reminds me of sitting in track side as a 5 year old

Thanks. More words tomorrow for the backstory behind the pics. :-)

Possibly the most famous Australian touring car. Great winning history, although never actually won the championship.

Morning, everyone. For some light relief after last night's FOTA-FIA mess, watch this!

David Letterman's Top 10 things that sound cool when spoken by a giant robot:

Joe Saward actually used the S word in his latest blog entry. Max's assertion that FOTA aren't part of the 2010 championship makes no sense whatsoever.

  • Paul09/07/2009 at 02:11

But who knows what kind of F1 they'll be competing in next year...

yeah that was said tongue-in-cheek. I'm not sure how to be happy about this

yeah that was said tongue-in-cheek. I'm not sure how to be happy about this

quite simply - you shouldn't. don't worry about it. ;)

watching Donington 1993 on JTV right now.

Yes. Although that blog post did send us looking for Theodore chassis numbers :D

  • Joe in Fla09/07/2009 at 02:13

Just trying to provoke Steven Roy

I cant understand how the powers-that-be have such compete disregard for the fans. It amazes me

We're not exactly the ones that vote them into power. Heck, even if (heaven forbid) F1 is destroyed, Bernie will lose his job, but there'll still be an FIA...

  • guille230609/07/2009 at 03:09

I cant understand how the powers-that-be have such compete disregard for the fans. It amazes me

It's not only that, it's more profound. People in power positions have always had some kind of (almost complete) disregard for the powerless. I'm not completely shock about that. What amazes me is the complete disregard for the teams and the sponsors (and even CVC). I mean, why don't he shout them 'go away, we don't want you money'. Dictators usually have a better idea of dealing with the money people...

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 10:12

Apologies to Maverick - here are some more F1 politics - A Minister in the Austrian Government wants to look into if they can take back the 'Grosse Goldene Ehrenzeichen fur Verdienste um die Republik Osterreich' (Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria) award they gave to Bernie some 10 years back. This is a consequence of his recent comments praising dictators. Like Max, he might be starting his own "Mein Kampf" given the current uncertainty in F1.

but don’t worry, F1 will never happen over here in Hong Kong

With Shanghai looking like it might drop out of F1, wouldn't that leave the door wide open for Hong Kong? There's a lot of space in the New Territories...

Speaking of sleeping, and Lou seeing imaginary comments...

I have been off work because I have a cold and I have also lost my voice. After being evicted to the couch to sleep last night, I couldn't relax and had imaginary Twitter conversations in my head! The best bit - I knew what was happening and thought "This is fun, let's see what happens!"

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/07/2009 at 10:36

this is what today Singapore GP official tells Hong Kong as a reason why Hong Kong should go on and get itself F1 race ...

and that about sums up whats wrong with F1 these days. Boo Singapore man.

I don't in reality of course. I have 7 at different stages of fruition. Draft one of one of them was finished just the other day. I am currently working on draft one of another one, while I let the first draft mature in the back of my mind for six weeks.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 10:48

All different. I find it, or rather I have found it, much easier to have ideas than I have to actually do them. But I'm sure most people are like that.

All different. I find it, or rather I have found it, much easier to have ideas than I have to actually do them. But I'm sure most people are like that.

I heard Neil Gaiman on the radio a while back, he said that he often gets approached by people saying they have an idea and could he write it. He said people tend to think the writing part is easy, whereas in reality the idea is the easy part.

I heard Neil Gaiman on the radio a while back...

I heard that same interview. Everything in that rang true for me.

Putting one word after another is the hardest part. But that's why I've ended up with so many short stories (which are collected in a book that is still available on Amazon ;). Because I have many more ideas than I have time to turn them into novels.

I think several of those ideas could have been stretched into full length novels. Or been parts of novels. Or the characters.

From the FIA: Setting the Record Straight

It follows that the agreement of the five teams currently entered in the 2010 World Championship to all 2010 rule changes is required. To suggest that FOTA were only made aware of this during the meetings of yesterday is quite simply untrue. So is the implicit claim that they were all unaware of one of motor sport’s basic principles.

Is it just me, or is the FIA missing the point? FOTA walked out not because of the unanimous approval clause; they walked out because they were told they weren't part of the championship yet...

  • Journeyer09/07/2009 at 11:57

    But here's the interesting part:

The deal that the FIA reached with FOTA in Paris was to extend the 1998 Concorde Agreement with some minor amendments to the governance section. This would have put in place an F1 Commission to deal with future rules with any major question going to the FIA Senate.

However, on 25 June, instead of the 1998 Agreement with some minor amendments, the FIA received 350 pages of a completely new Concorde Agreement.

And look who worked on it:

FIA lawyers worked over the weekend on 4-5 July, as did FIA President Max Mosley and FIA Deputy President (sport) Nick Craw.

The presence of Craw's name there is promising in that at least someone will keep Max in check.

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 12:07

I cannot understand FIA (or do we actually mean Max) - can he not read the statements coming from FOTA? If you look at web pages - many people have completely lost support for F1 this time - and it is one person's fault and only one.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/07/2009 at 12:10

ASDA Set Fuel Prices below 1pound/litre

How's the V-Power experiment going then?

  • Journeyer09/07/2009 at 12:15

I cannot understand FIA (or do we actually mean Max) – can he not read the statements coming from FOTA?

He does - that's why he's replying to it. But he sees in FOTA's message what he wants to see in it - not necessarily what it really means.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 12:16

How's the V-Power experiment going then?

I imagine there'll be an update this weekend.

That's been talked about from various people on here in the past day or two. for me, I'm refusing to allow myself to let the stupid background politics and useless arguments corrupting the sport affect my own personal enjoyment of watching it on TV and whatnot, especially as I only tend to see the race and no quali/practise now. No matter how frustratingly dimwitted the FOTA/FIA war is, I still love everything that happens on track and F1 itself.

  • Flibster09/07/2009 at 12:59

    Proper order.

    1, 2, clone wars, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Release order puts the start of the story in the middle, the end in the middle and the middle at the beginning and the end.

It's like watching Pulp Fiction. :D

A gem from pitmonster over on pitlanefanatic that I thought I'd share...

You put the FOTA 8 in, you take the FOTA 8 out,

You have a list of entrants, then you shake it all about,

You do the hokey-cokey and you turn around,

Ferrari and the rest all want Max out

    Everybody!

    Wooaahh Max has gone crackers,

    Wooaahh Formula 1 is knackered,

    Wooaahh Max has gone crackers,

That's why they all want Max out! out ! out!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:01

Perhaps you could listen to the parade lap as part of the build up. We rarely even talk about the race let alone the politics ;)

do you think it's possible to avoid f1 talk altogether?

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:01

do you think it's possible to avoid f1 talk altogether?

We actually came really close last time except for the predictions.

    And Scott.

it should be a challenge :)

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:02

Well everything was tangentially connected I guess

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:02

true. might be impossible actually. i like the idea of trying though.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:03

I mean Our Song is about F1 but it comes from #f1happyplace

it would be kinda hard not to mention the hashtag the whole show too.

silly idea mr. c. as you were.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:05

true. might be impossible actually. i like the idea of trying though.

It is okay to talk about F1 as long as it is things like Giggles'll Fix It, Our Song and Describe a Driver in 3 Words. Anything else is off the menu.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:05

We've also got the quiz, must do the wiki page I best do that tonight. And also Just an F1 Minute could eventually hit the airwaves!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:09

Just an F1 Minute could eventually hit the airwaves!

    GEN.I.US!

    Woah!

I take it that you liked it?

I want Doctor Who now :D

  • Lukeh09/07/2009 at 13:11

I take it that you liked it?

Seems very creepy. Which is goooooood. although Stephen Moffat does creepy the best out of the Dr Who writers...

I'm watching last night Torchwood's now. This is everything the show always should have been...

  • James09/07/2009 at 13:12

    did i miss something?

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:15

Just an F1 Minute could eventually hit the airwaves!

Is that the yes/no one or the no umm/ahh one?

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:16

    did i miss something?

You were selotaping a camera to a table at the time!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:16

You were selotaping a camera to a table at the time!

    i was? that's sounds like something i'd do, but i don't remember.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:19

You were selotaping a camera to a table at the time!

Was that because of the earthquake I caused?

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:20

Is that the yes/no one or the no umm/ahh one?

The quiz is the yes/no one.

The Just an F1 Minute one you have to speak for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition. So you can't say the same word twice. On the radio version people interrupt each other. In this version the idea was when people ran out of steam we would record their time and have a league table.

We didn't get to do the F1 minute one, and I probably shouldn't have mentioned it because it was two games at the same time. I probably should have saved it up for another occasion. But it's all good!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:20

Was that because of the earthquake I caused?

    ahhh. i had no headphones.

    i blame steven of course.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:21

Was that because of the earthquake I caused?

Yup it was earthquake related :)

Mr C listened to me talking about the competition, fixed the earthquake, and came back and was the first person to take part in the competition, so no wonder he was confused!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:22

you have to speak for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition

i know someone who will ace this game.

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:22

came back and was the first person to take part in the competition

i've already taken part? how did i do??

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:23

i've already taken part? how did i do??

See I knew this was confusing!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:23

See I knew this was confusing!

i remember an earthquake, the rest is a mystery to me.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:23

i've already taken part? how did i do??

You took part in the yes no competition... What is the piece of F1 memorabilia that I have. You didn't get it right!

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:24

You took part in the yes no competition...

    oooh that one. right.

where did the apple box come into it?

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:25

You took part in the yes no competition... What is the piece of F1 memorabilia that I have. You didn't get it right!

    The one with the beard.

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:26

    The one with the beard.

that's different for the question given to scott at silverstone... right?

    *head explodes*

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:26

    *head explodes*

    :D

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:27

where did the apple box come into it?

    hahaha... oh goodness...

    There are two things...

    1) The Competion

What bit of F1 Memorabilia does Alex own. Ask any question which can be answered yes / no. And then after hearing the answer take a guess. Win a hat from any F1 team of your choice.

    2) Just an F1 Minute - We haven't done this one on the show - but I mentioned it when Mr C couldn't hear

Talk for 1 Minute on a topic I pull out of my apple box without hesitation, deviation or repetition. Person who goes for longest in the season wins.

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:29

    2) Just an F1 Minute - We haven't done this one on the show - but I mentioned it when Mr C couldn't hear

maybe i need to listen back to the parade lap during week :(

    am with you now.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:30

maybe i need to listen back to the parade lap during week :(

Don't worry it was my fault. Because I thought people could call in and do both I mentioned them both one after the other and then everyone in the comments got confused too.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:33

Ah, that was fun. What else can we confuse him with?

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:33

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:37

We could talk about some things from your blog ;)

Or we could reach for the classics and start talking about crochet.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 13:38

Or we could reach for the classics and start talking about crochet.

Not sure about crochet. I can knit a little bit though.

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:39

    :P

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:41

Not sure about crochet. I can knit a little bit though.

There was a conversation, when I think you were on your yacht (or narrowboat or whathaveyou) about some crochet which had enabled mathmaticians to create a physical representation of a mathematical structure for the very first time. It was the same day Mr C learned about Speed tape from memory.

    me = mind blown!

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 13:41

Ah, that was fun. What else can we confuse him with?

That sounds like the best idea for a game - "Mr C for Confused"

  • me09/07/2009 at 13:42

    me = mind blown!

and the time nick asked what was in the other half of my can of air.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 13:43

But at least we know that Mr C has compelling mutterings.

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 13:45

The crochet was my fault... I had, surprise surprise, been to an exhibition. LPG had been too and then the conversation went quite complicated!

I go away for just 1 day and the f1 world decides to have some politics...Not Fair..

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 13:53

    Don't mention the war :-)

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:00

    Don't mention the war :-)

    War is under-appreciated!

Apparently the Tour de france has started. despite the fact noone has bothered to report it or put it on the news... £10 bets that it haven't started are a bad idea at this point.

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 14:01

TdF has been pretty good so far, somebody has forgotten to tell Armstrong how old he is.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:03

TdF has been pretty good so far, somebody has forgotten to tell Armstrong how old he is.

They report it whenever Mark Cavendish wins stages. ;)

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 14:04

Apparently the Tour de france has started.

It was also quite odd to see them dropping through Monaco and under the Grand Hotel

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:06

    What!

    I give up on cycling...

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 14:06

Drip Drip Drip is no fun :)

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 14:07

I cant believe it is on, i have seen no publicity or news about it at all!

Highlights tucked away on ITV4 - 7pm tonight

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:08

Having looked back he sent some ater the TTT which i suspect is either a viaduct stage or a team time trial

  • me09/07/2009 at 14:08

I think f1 needs a 24 hour rolling news channel when things like this happen...

    there is no news?

Ah, i havent watched itv for weeks

  • me09/07/2009 at 14:09

Ah, i havent watched itv for weeks

i haven't watched itv since brazil.

  • Rachel09/07/2009 at 14:09

I think f1 needs a 24 hour rolling news channel when things like this happen...

shots of closed of doors for several hours whilst journalists speculate as to what is going on behind them, empty podiums whilst the presenter informs us the press conference should be 'any (F1)minute now...'

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:09

    there is no news?

Which is why we need the news channel...

there format requires them to create news where none previously existed ;)

  • Lukeh09/07/2009 at 14:10

i haven't watched itv since brazil.

But! but what about...uuhh.. y..nope that was bbc..... OH! ...no that was channel 4... uurmm...

    ...yeah that sounds right.

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 14:11

i haven’t watched itv since brazil.

Think I've only watched Champions League football since then

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:11

i haven't watched itv since brazil.

I think the touring cars and Lemans are the only 2 things i can remember watching on Itv, and that was Itv 4

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 14:11

Does anyone know if you can eat cook's chocolate without cooking it? There's a severe food shortage in my kitchen...

I used to nick my mother's cooking chocolate all the time as a kid and I m still here. I am not sure if you can unlimited quantities of it but you can have some.

  • Flibster09/07/2009 at 14:13

Does anyone know if you can eat cook's chocolate without cooking it? There's a severe food shortage in my kitchen...

You can - it generally doesn't taste that good though.

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 14:14

There wasn't even any decent films on ITV1 at Christmas, I remember asking why ITV put all their good(ish) stuff on ITV2-4

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 14:15

You can – it generally doesn’t taste that good though.

It's Green & Black's and I'll let you know if it kills me in an hour or so...

  • Rachel09/07/2009 at 14:15

I think the touring cars and Lemans are the only 2 things i can remember watching on Itv, and that was Itv 4

I sometimes watch the Red Bull Air races but that's itv4 again.

  • Flibster09/07/2009 at 14:16

It's Green & Black's and I'll let you know if it kills me in an hour or so...

Should be ok then - G&B's is normally pretty good.

  • Rachel09/07/2009 at 14:17

Random question; is there a key that functions like a PC 'delete' key on the mac - i.e. deletes text in front of the cursor?

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 14:18

I sometimes watch the Red Bull Air races but that's itv4 again.

There are shown on ITV1 on a Monday or Tuesday night

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:18

I sometimes watch the Red Bull Air races but that's itv4 again.

Thats the problem with Itv.. I would enjoy watching something like that, but because 95% of the channel is so rubbish i never know about the 5%of decent stuff which is on!

  • me09/07/2009 at 14:18

there format requires them to create news where none previously existed ;)

i think gmm have that covered.

  • Flibster09/07/2009 at 14:19

Forget the Star Wars marathon this weekend - Watchmen Directors Cut just arrived among a stack of other films. :D

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 14:20

i think gmm have that covered.

    They make stuff up.

creating a story, and reporting made up stuff are subtly but crucialy different

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 14:20

I have just realised something really bad... now that there has been practising last weekend do you think that's raised the expectations?

    *gulp*

    :)

By the way, and I'm sure I missed something is the 4 eeePcs the solution to not having "this is a wirecast" all the time but still have video?

nope. the four eeepc solution would allow us to mute individual skype channels. instead of having to say "someone's typing / coughing, please shush when it's not your turn". during a panel. we could just turn the offender down.

we're awaiting an update to wirecast before buying it (and also saving up the £300+ required). basically it doesn't yet stream to iphone 3.0 properly, but when it does, we're in.

Ah... was thinking that you could have the four eeeepcs behind Christine and the people on Video full screen and then you'd be away :)

  • me09/07/2009 at 14:37

Ah... was thinking that you could have the four eeeepcs behind Christine and the people on Video full screen and then you'd be away :)

that's exactly what leo has (he had another one of my ideas first).

we don't actually have the bandwidth to stream skype video. no matter how many eeepc's we have. we'll need a leased line. or fibre.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 14:38

    10 what?

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 14:39

    Yes it does.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 14:40

I was only joking. 10 Eees. See you could want that many, but actually you only want a few.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 14:41

If it's any help I don't have any Eeees :(

    Or any new MacBookPros :(

  • me09/07/2009 at 14:42

I was only joking. 10 Eees. See you could want that many, but actually you only want a few.

    it still won't help though?

we need kathi's bandwidth to get the pictures onto the eeepc's. displaying the images is easy, getting hold of them in the first place (without lots of buffering) is tricky.

but you're a broadcaster now. you have your own show (so i heard). you need a new mbp.

    That's true :) Hmmm.

Maybe what I need, what we all need, is a broadcast show that makes us money rather than costing us money! ;)

  • me09/07/2009 at 14:45

we need kathi's bandwidth to get the pictures onto the eeepc's. displaying the images is easy, getting hold of them in the first place (without lots of buffering) is tricky.

So you need to buy a bunch of computers and ship them to Kathi along with a camera and lighting. She could then set all that up and all you need to do is take one feed from her and do a picture in picture with her feed. Easy. It could be a little bit expensive though.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 14:58

Apparently the FIA thinks we are close to a new Concorde Agreement. I think Max has finally gone senile.

I was forced to leave a rather long comment. I bet this one gets past Joe's moderation process. He seems to be less inclined to cut recently.

  • Flibster09/07/2009 at 15:10

    tv is dead.

    Not yet.

When there's enough bandwidth to stream full 1080P video with uncompressed audio on demand and not have to wait for buffering - then TV will be dead.

Although - download limits will have to be abolished - 1 film could hit 50gb.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:11

Alonso says he hasn't been talking to Ferrari. But he would say that wouldn't he?

He doesn't really need to talk to them anymore if he has signed a deal, remember he sorted his deal with McLaren at the start of the preceding season.

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 15:11

Apparently the FIA thinks we are close to a new Concorde Agreement. I think Max has finally gone senile.

Yes but FOTA since yesterday's walkout has been very quiet - too quiet. My hunch is they have gone back to their plan for a break-away series and a statement during the week-end to this effect will be announced. I am just not quite sure what FIA are hoping to gain from this fight and then attempting to play the innocent!

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:12

When there's enough bandwidth to stream full 1080P video with uncompressed audio on demand and not have to wait for buffering - then TV will be dead.

By the time that happens widely enough to be worthwhile 1080P will be like black and white TV

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:12

    Not yet.

yes it is. the business model behind television stations is broken beyond repair. 1080p has no bearing on nothing.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 15:13

the vast majority of people don't care about 1080p. it's irrelevant to anyone other than blueray owners.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:14

Only 3 at the moment, but i am saving up for all 16 ;)

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 15:14

yes it is. the business model behind television stations is broken beyond repair. 1080p has no bearing on nothing.

Absolutely. Scroll back to the question earlier today somebody asked, "why is BBC good and ITV so rubbish". And this is why.

The business model of tv is broken. (BBC isn't a business so it's different)

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:15

Only 3 at the moment, but i am saving up for all 16 ;)

video streaming can afford to fail. it costs next to nothing to do. television costs thousands and thousands to transmit

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 15:16

ITV must be soon. They stopped filming Heartbeat! The end is nigh.

    And they moved Coronation Street!

The bbc is a big problem in this country, the way it is run means that others simply cant compete, It will probably be wound down to a news service in 5-10 years time

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 15:17

    And they moved Coronation Street!

And they're changing the theme music of The Bill!?!?!?!

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 15:17

I am just not quite sure what FIA are hoping to gain from this fight and then attempting to play the innocent!

Problem is, he's confused everyone else too

  • Flibster09/07/2009 at 15:18

By the time that happens widely enough to be worthwhile 1080P will be like black and white TV

    Ding ding ding ding... ;)

    Is the correct answer.

Most TV's sold at the moment are 1376x768 - even 720p video can be easily 20mb/s

Hell, even 576p vdieo can be 10mb/s on a dvd.

The quality of iPlayer footage when scaled up is pretty dreadful - hence why they've started iPlayerHD streaming

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 15:18

The bbc is a big problem in this country, the way it is run means that others simply cant compete, It will probably be wound down to a news service in 5-10 years time

Much as it pains me to suggest this to the 1080P people here, because I would love everything to be as high definition as possible.

My mum can understand and uses the iPlayer and she thinks she can't use computers (she can't really except things like this). She wouldn't know what 1080P was, and if you explained it she would say, "that's nice dear".

Bet that's true for a lot of people.

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:22

Most TV's sold at the moment are 1376x768 - even 720p video can be easily 20mb/s

you are soooo on the wrong track here. but fair enough, it's really not worth arguing about.

i would suggest at some point you look at the costs of creating a programme like inside grand prix for motors tv, versus what it costs us to make something similar.

the figures no longer add up, but if you're only concerned about resolution you carry right on.

  • lou09/07/2009 at 15:22

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 15:22

I really hope there is a breakaway but I don't see it happening now

I wonder if it is now not too late. Was the break-away a FOTA Bluff? I have sympathy with FOTA because you simply do not know what the FIA is up to or what they ultimately want?

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:28

And how much does the bandwidth to send say.. 400mb to 2 million people cost? 780ish terabytes...

Thats the biggest problem, alongside the fact the country doesnt have the infrustructure.

no matter how many 50ps go in the jar, there is no way to pay to give the country the bandwidth it needs. the more people who discover streaming, the more redundant it will become.

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:28

And how much does the bandwidth to send say.. 400mb to 2 million people cost? 780ish terabytes...

very, very little. i promise you, i've seen the figures. whatever you think it costs, you're wrong.

especially when you look at how much murdoch's satellite orbiting the earth costs to run.

  • Maverick09/07/2009 at 15:28

I really hope there is a breakaway but I don’t see it happening now

I think it's easier for FOTA to get some circuits together at short notice than it is for the FIA to get some replacement teams (more importantly, cars) together. Likelihood is that they'd end up having to upgrade F2. Main problem for FOTA would be a tyre supplier.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 15:28

oo i'm up for that :D... will i be able to fly back for goodwood and school and stuff? lol

Of course. We're not kidnapping you.

I wonder if it is now not too late. Was the break-away a FOTA Bluff? I have sympathy with FOTA because you simply do not know what the FIA is up to or what they ultimately want?

I think they would have gone ahead with it had they not got the deal they were after. Quite why they gave away there negotiating position without anything in witing is beyond me. What they did was the same as a poker player announcing he had a monster hand just as the other guy was about to put his chips in.

  • lou09/07/2009 at 15:30

I am not sure the Tyre supplier is such a problem - think what the advertising potential would be? Michelin could come back but would prefer a "competitor" rather than single supplier.

  • Christine09/07/2009 at 15:31

Honestly I do not think Fernando and Felipe would have too many problems as team mates - generally Fernando will be quicker other than the few tracks that suite Felipe. Also Felipe is a popular team mate.

oo i'm up for that :D... will i be able to fly back for goodwood and school and stuff? lol

Goodwood yes but not school. They apparenty have schools in Finland.

  • lou09/07/2009 at 15:33

Goodwood yes but not school. They apparenty have schools in Finland.

yeah but i like my school :P i've been there for like 13 years...

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:34

especially when you look at how much murdoch's satellite orbiting the earth costs to run.

Assuming you can get the satellite to launch in the first place. And satellites only live so long.

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 15:34

I think they would have gone ahead with it had they not got the deal they were after. Quite why they gave away there negotiating position without anything in witing is beyond me. What they did was the same as a poker player announcing he had a monster hand just as the other guy was about to put his chips in.

Its called TRUST - they held too much for the FIA. I think this is why the silence as they will want more security next time. It is very evident that if FOTA formed a break-away that is where the majority (90% plus) of fans would follow.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:34

it's not a problem, honestly. do you have any idea what it costs to run a television station?

I think its about 75K to be on the lower echalons of skys epg

But thats not the point, who is going to pay to lay fibre optic cables? especialy to places that wont be profitable for years and years

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:34

I think it's easier for FOTA to get some circuits together at short notice than it is for the FIA to get some replacement teams (more importantly, cars) together. Likelihood is that they'd end up having to upgrade F2. Main problem for FOTA would be a tyre supplier.

Getting tyres is easy. Even if they had to pay for them it is minor.

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:35

yeah but i like my school :P i've been there for like 13 years...

Everyone has to leave school one day

  • Rachel09/07/2009 at 15:36

no matter how many 50ps go in the jar, there is no way to pay to give the country the bandwidth it needs. the more people who discover streaming, the more redundant it will become.

Not necessarily, part of the problem is the length of the line - e.g. if you live 3 miles from a 8mb/s exchange you only get 1mb/s. If the lines were upgraded the drop off wouldn't be anywhere near as bad, and that wouldn't actually cost a fortune.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:36

Getting tyres is easy. Even if they had to pay for them it is minor.

Michalin would throw them at FOTA by the bucketload to get back at max

They have similar styles. The tracks that suit one will suit the other

Yes but still think Felipe might be that little bit better on Turkey and Brazil - speculation though. Personally I think Felipe is a better driver than most people think, he is just not the most complete driver.

Agreed. Michelin and Goodyear are readily available.

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:37

why do you need them? it's only an issue if you're talking about live programmes. and there aren't actually that many of them any more.

  • Journeyer09/07/2009 at 15:37

    Interesting tweet from JA:

hearing stories that Red Bull technical director Geoff Willis has left the team. More to follow.

    That'll hurt their 2009 campaign.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:38

Nationally it could, and who is going to pay for it? There is no incentive for BT or anyone else to do anything about it as it has to be opened up to all their competitors

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 15:39

hearing stories that Red Bull technical director Geoff Willis has left the team. More to follow.

You beat me to posting this - implication moving to a new team for next year?

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 15:39

why do you need them? it's only an issue if you're talking about live programmes. and there aren't actually that many of them any more.

They are the only programmes making money though!

You cant skip the ads so easily if your watching live sport or Britain factor

  • Journeyer09/07/2009 at 15:39

    That'll hurt their 2009 campaign.

The Brawn GP Fan Blog guy on Twitter raised a very interesting point - might he be on his way back to Brackley to replace Jorg Zander? That's a very good theory...

  • Journeyer09/07/2009 at 15:40

You beat me to posting this - implication moving to a new team for next year?

Maybe even Brawn? Geoff's been at Brackley before...

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 15:40

why do you need them? it's only an issue if you're talking about live programmes. and there aren't actually that many of them any more.

Cable = Bad = Single point of failure

Distributed Wireless = Good = Multiple points of failure

A key example is that the only thing that survived in New Orleans was the distributed wifi CCTV system. everything that relied on cables failed.

Each point of presence should extent the cloud and share the load of distribution for popular programs / downloads.

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:40

They are the only programmes making money though!

if it doesn't cost you as much to transmit. you don't need to make as much?

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:41

Michalin would throw them at FOTA by the bucketload to get back at max

Michelin would want a competitor though. Of course they may supply for the first year without a competitor and advertise against Bridgestone.

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:41

i'll move to finland next year then ;)

You will not get a good room then. All the good ones will be gone.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 15:41

You have to watch live so you can vote. They are the shows that make money. But you could do that even better online :)

  • lou09/07/2009 at 15:42

You will not get a good room then. All the good ones will be gone.

ahh go on then, who needs A Levels anyways :P

  • me09/07/2009 at 15:42

Each point of presence should extent the cloud and share the load of distribution for popular programs / downloads.

peer-to-peer is certainly a viable solution. and it effectively costs nothing to distribute content that way. you wouldn't need to sell many ads to make a profit that way ;)

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:43

He has only been there a year or so. His job is to take Newey designs and engineer in some reliability. He was signed because Newey listens to him and lets him modify his designs.

Good point there on the reliability bit. Would a (pardon the pun) Wil-less Red Bull team still have a reliable car underneath them next year?

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:45

Are A levels recognised in Finland. Of course if sidepodcast is going to employ us all I am sure they will trust you to be honest about your qualifications.

It will still be there, tvs are becoming computors and computors are becoming tvs.

A lot of people will want to keep the passivness of tv though. A box you just turn on and shows you things randomly does appeal to non techy people.

not necessarily true. we've ditched our tv, we no longer watch it, it's a useless piece of technology.

our computer became our tv, but not vice-versa.

Our bandwith costs for the small amount of hosting we do is 30p/gb

We charge the customers at 32p/gb

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 15:52

They have always visited other countries. It started in England a few years ago.

Mind you the British F3 championship regularly has rounds in other countries. Maybe national boundaries have no meaning any more.

Yea, but that's how you find out where technology is going before it gets there.

He worked out that you could making an episode of Sex and the City (pay actors, screenwriter, etc), print it onto DVDs which instead of saying Sex and the City on the cover of the DVD said, "Sex and the City brought to you by blah" and post them to everyone in Australia for less money than it cost you to sponsor the show on TV per episode in Australia.

That's how you know TV is broken.

early adopters. we did it because it makes sense. because tv has nothing to offer us anymore.

    here's another example.

in the chip-shop down the road, the girl behind the counter spends all day watching iplayer (it's not a busy chippy) on a laptop. not a television in the corner.

don't tell me the chip-shop is techy? they only deal in cash.

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 15:55

We also don't do that much so we don't get it cheap.

Apples HD movies aren't spectacularly good. 720p and files sizes have to be under 4gb *for the loonies who insist on sticking with Fat32...* Most hover around 3gb looking at it.

Mr. C, a question about sounds in the Doohickey... When I open it for the first time, it makes a [sound like crystal crashing], and then it does nothing else. This is independent of the 'enable sounds' button state. Is this the expected behaviour? (running FF3.5 under Linux)

I don't buy MP3's or FLAC online - well - apart from a single purchase of 30 Crowded House shows from their US tour as the CD's couldn't be shipped to the UK... which sucked as I'd would have preferred them.

Anyway - FLAC is massively better than MP3 - althought he audio quality of many new releases has gone to hell just through the simple creation of MP3s in the first place. Damn audio compression and the loudness war.

A high quality format still in use?

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 16:27

A high quality format still in use?

You also have laserdisc player too.

But just because they are better doesn't mean they will win.

  • Alex Andronov09/07/2009 at 16:28

but somehow, i don't think the TV companies are going away. Much in the same way that plays didn't go away when movies became popular, or movies didn't go away when TV hit the bigtime, TV is here to stay.

I don't think TVs are going away. TV companies will become production companies is my guess.

  • me09/07/2009 at 16:28

Ok, so my, and many other peoples opinion is wrong because...??

mp3's are selling and flac's are not. at least not in any number worth discussing.

  • Journeyer09/07/2009 at 16:28

In a bit of news totally worthy of a "Sorry, Amy", Ron Walker has said that, "If the disunity continues Melbourne will seriously consider its position on continuing with Formula One..."

He's also calling on Max to step down - the first race promoter to do so. But Ron Walker is a pretty big name in the F1 world.

  • me09/07/2009 at 16:29

    and that's the problem.

A high quality format still in use?

This sounds like arguments I used to listen to at school. One day everyone will buy separate tuners and amplifiers and graphic equalisers and speakers because it is the only way to get a particular note to sound right.

Truth is the vast majority of people don't care about ultimate quality. I am sure if you go back in time you will find people saying newspapers won't work because the paper quality is so poor.

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 16:33

He's also calling on Max to step down - the first race promoter to do so. But Ron Walker is a pretty big name in the F1 world.

Go Ron. He likes throwing his weight around.

Anyway as for Mr C and Christine living without the television let me just quote William Gibson:

"The future is here, it's just not evenly distributed yet."

Preferable not the Solar System just with Max in the black hoe!

I wonder what the biggest particle it can accelerate is. I would like to accelerate a Max particle in one direction and a Bernie particle in the other just to see what such a collision produced.

    JA's article is VERY interesting:

    Most interesting part for me:

CVC and the teams have been talking directly this week and are both keen to get this situation resolved so they can get on with the future. From the briefings I’ve had today it seems as though the teams and CVC have, to some extent, marginalised Ecclestone and Mosley in this latest phase of the story, but I doubt that those two men see it that way.

I thought the teams hated CVC? But well, at least FOTA knows who holds the true power...

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 18:16

He chose a REALLY bad time to take that picture

    Rubens pic has been removed!

Been replaced with another shot of his motor home the video showing an F1 race- still has the mirror on the ceiling though!

Its confirmed that Geoff Willis is out at Red Bul according to James Allen.

There is also this bit on Bourdais...

"Meanwhile my Italian colleagues are telling me that Sunday will be the last Grand Prix for Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso. There have been persistent rumours that the Frenchman is on thin ice, but Bourdais denied them today,"

Does that mean Goldilocks gave up the third driver role for more than he admitted?

  • Pat W09/07/2009 at 18:54

Just reading the TV conversation from earlier with interest.

    tv is dead.

Not yet - linear stations are dead but I'm convinced it'll move to an on-demand model similar to BT Vision (but which works better).

the figures no longer add up, but if you're only concerned about resolution you carry right on.

If it was about resolution, Betamax would have won. Things haven't changed.

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 18:55

Interesting, I doubt that they will use the reserve driver even if Goldilocks had stayed, personally I do not see much advantage to replacing Bourdais unless you get a driver like Klien or Liuzzi. Experience really counts without testing.

  • Pat W09/07/2009 at 19:03

peer-to-peer is certainly a viable solution. and it effectively costs nothing to distribute content that way. you wouldn't need to sell many ads to make a profit that way ;)

The new owners of The Pirate Bay are trying just that.

Sato could not be worse than Seabass. Of course the STR has recently been the slowest car on the grid - so it could be the chance to try a young kid like Jaime Alguersuari.

Why not have former drivers get to drive one race, that way they get experience and there is someone new to keep an eye on each race? :D

(I'm aware it won't happen, because the the drivers won't get a chance to score many points)

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 19:20

And he has said he wants to come back...

Sure he wants to come back but both Jenson and Sato were faster. Hi best opportunity is USF1

  • RG09/07/2009 at 19:20

Won't make a change from normal in Toro Rosso.

  • Rich09/07/2009 at 19:22

A seat in STR is not good if you are an experienced driver since it is so slow it does not help your reputation. I hope that they leave Seabass alone till the end of the season.

That just confuses me though, at the start of the season it was the same as the Red Bull which did well in the first two races. As the season has gone on, there upgrades have come a couple of races later. If it isn't the car then it has the to be the engine but then Ferrari don't seem to be doing too badly.

They no longer have technical support from red bull which appears to have hampered them a lot, especially without a veteran driver to help them dial the car in

Why not though? surely it doesn't look good for the bosses at Red Bull to have 4 cars running, finish 1-2 and 19-20 (provided all cars finish). Mind you they are probably more focused on the 1-2 and forget they have a second team. If they want a team for young drivers, then GP2 or F2 would be a better place.

  • Lukeh09/07/2009 at 19:32

STR needs to become a full constructor by next year; they have to show to the possible buyers that they can do it by themselves (so far, not so good...)

Basically, in the world fo football (boohissboo) there is a series of games called the Football Manager games were, well the name speaks for itself. Basically, I would LOVE to see an F1 game in such detail because the series is notorious for bringing in an immense amount of information, and making it a very realistic game where it does feel like you're in total control. What I've been working on is mockups of how an F1 Manager game would look like (or so I reckon, based on a lot of inspiration from the Football Manager series) so... check these out. This would be the concept behind my Formula 1 Manager game....

Driver Info screens - obviously with an f1 game as a manager you'd need to know about your drivers. The FM games give a load of detail with ratings out of 20 about the players, as is the case here with the drivers obviously. Plus as a manager you could hrie new drivers, fire, scout around the world in feeder and lower sports, etc... the screenshots are self explanatory on the sidebar menus and whatnot. You could also have the same template for your staff as well, from engineers to the guys back at your factories, hiring and firing based on their stats and reputations and whatnot, a fully fledged team owner.

News screens - This would be where you'd find out all your information via news updates, with the top scrollbar of headlines feeding you the latest news and then the indepth stuff on the lower bit. It's always been a part of the FM games and it'd be immensely useful obviously with this. Plus you could always cause your own media mischief by sending out your own news updates as a team boss, make comments about your drivers or other drivers. And walk out of FOTA meetings. :P

Race View via live timing - Obviously this is the live timing version of watching the race. Other ideas would be to view it via a circuit map with dots going around in live time, and text updates as can be seen at the bottom of this under the live timing but as a whole screen of updates obviously. The sidebar shows live championship standings and whatnot, your two drivers stategies, comments from the radio, etc, everything you need to know from them and again, it all should be self explanatory.

Of course these three bits of screenshots mockups I have made would just be 3 different areas rather than the whole thing - if were making it, there'd be allsorts like gettin driver reports in youth programs, testing days, everything basically that you see on the sidebars of these mockups and at the top title bar underneath the main header that links to various other areas within the game. You can probably guess how much I'd like to see this happen based on how much time I've wasted putting all this together and hopefully it all makes sense as to everything I've made...

Sorry if this is a mega long comment....

  • Alison09/07/2009 at 19:43

No, BATracer is completley different and GPM2 is ooooold.

Actually, I can't avoid to feel a bit weird about paying for education. I know that in many places it is the norm; but living in a country where you can go from kindergarten to University without having to pay anything for it, it just feels weird...

  • lou09/07/2009 at 20:27

yep. no thanks to the stupid tech teacher who does is 'in charge'. what kinda of a techie doesn't make sure there are spare batteries, that the stage doors aren't locked and that the microphones work?! i mean checking everything is the first thing i do when i get in. so silly. luckily i was just helping out some of the younger techies today and not doing it all on my own...that's tomorrow night :D

The reason they gave is that they think they would be better spending the same budget going to the Petit Le Mans instead. So instead of 1000km you get a full 10 hours of Franck with two healthy legs. So long as they take him

Not quite ... you have to take into account the following:

    (1) The exchange rate fell by 25% when I did this

    (2) I was paying about 10% in transaction fees every quarter (because that's how I was paying it)

Plus the fact it took 6 weeks and numerous phone calls every time I transferred money....

John Barrowman wasn't so keen on them, but I think this has been awesome and emotional. It would have never worked as a 13 part weekly series. RTD made the right call.

Agree with that. He was funny in the first few series and still has his moments, yet most of the time he's just trying to be 'shocking' and is just crass.

:D "...but it's never been anywhere near water..."

One guy who was recently let go at work had a customer who's handset was liquid damaged. He was a Norfolk guy and apparently he said in the thickest Norfolk accent ever "I ain't dropped my fuun in no pond, I 'aven't"

  • Pat W09/07/2009 at 22:10

oh wow. last night i uploaded a few (very short) videos to youtube and now someone has commented to identify himself as the rider of the unknown bike...

:D "...but it's never been anywhere near water..."

But in all seriousness, I can explain how liquid damage

*could get boring, save yourself and stop reading here*

Liquid damage doesn't necessarily mean you've dropped the phone in the sink or bath or in a puddle or something to that extent. It can occur by means of simple usage in the rain, with wet hands, in a room that tends to have a lot of moisture in it i.e. kitchen or bathroom, or by spilling a few drops of liquid onto the phone by accident. Some customers complain that it's not very good that the manufacturers can't make a handset that can withstand such things, but then again they don't advertise them as waterproof in the first place!

Basically, if your handset gets liquid damaged, it's finished. It causes corrosion on the metal parts of the phone and it's simply unrepairable. You can have every single part on the phone replaced and it will still come back because it's corrosion. It is essentially the mobile phone equivalent of a terminal illness.

    Utter Utter Utter rubbish.

    Like total rubbish.

My phone has been down the toilet, and in a lake. AND it still works.

Granted, not as well as it used too, but it still does the functions it needs to.

You need to get yourself a Nokia m'lad

You must be one of the lucky ones then.

You need to get yourself a Nokia m'lad

With the amounts I've seen come in on a daily basis? Heck no! I swear I had about 20 Fault Found handsets today and at least half were Nokia's.

Also, Sony Ericsson's software is rubbish too. And I should know, I had to put up with my W890i resetting itself every now and again.

  • Ollie09/07/2009 at 22:22

My phone has been down the toilet, and in a lake. AND it still works.

To be fair, while I agree with Scott that any water/moisture getting into an electrical device like a mobile or computer is *not* good, I have dropped my mobile in the sea before, fished around for a couple of minutes, retrieved it, and it still works perfectly fine. Maybe luck was on my side.

  • Andy Taylor09/07/2009 at 22:22

My phone has been down the toilet, and in a lake. AND it still works.

It might work now, but could fail at any time in the future. It will almost certainly not be covered by any manufacturer's warranty as they all now put liquid sensors inside the phones that irreversibly change colour when made wet.

Granted, not as well as it used too, but it still does the functions it needs to.

So it has suffered damage, it's only a matter of time then...

It's an old hand set, back in the day when they built phones to last, and you can tell; everytime i try and buy one off ebay (for when i go one lake too far) and they go for alot of money

  • Jon Waldock09/07/2009 at 22:23

It's been like this for years, most new phones wouldnt last as long as this one has.

It might work now, but could fail at any time in the future. It will almost certainly not be covered by any manufacturer's warranty as they all now put liquid sensors inside the phones that irreversibly change colour when made wet.

It's way past its warranty, it's probably 5/6 years old now

  • Nick09/07/2009 at 22:24

I think someone posted this here before, but if you wipe off the network-ware the phones improve no end.

The add ons are completely pointless, and often destabilise the phones massively

I dropped a Nokia in a puddle during my lunch break a few years ago and didn't notice till 5pm. I went to where I had parked my car at lunch and found the phone under 3 inches of water. Tooke it apart and let it dry and it was fine. Never had a problem with it.

(said only to be humorous) To further the stereotype, we should have a test you have to pass before you can buy one of our phones :P

The thing is, my phone was quote/unquote "free". If I owned a phone that had any value, be it personal or monetary, I would of course insure it and take care of it. My MacBook Pro is well taken care of and insured because I use it outside of my home while at work. Because I paid about £1500 for it, I damn well take care of it.

My mobile? That's a disposable device. So what it fell in the water. If it hadn't worked when I fished it out, I would have simply shrugged my shoulders and moved on. And probably paid for the cheapest possible replacement.

    It’s an old hand set, back in the day when they built phones to last, and you can tell;

I had to take my phone to a local phone shop a couple of months ago to see if they could get it working again. When I told them my SIM card was five years old the man on the counter was astonished. He reckoned they were only supposed to work for 18 months.

(It turned out the SIM card simply needed removing and putting back in the phone to get rid of static. Something tells me it will probably work for at least another five years as long as I don't jinx it... ...oops!)

Me. I very much liked my little basic Nokia phone (that was so basic it didn't even have working internet access) and only replaced it because I got a PDA as a present. Now I'm even more attached to my PDA - even if I can't get insurance for it because it's second-hand (the first owner only had it for a few weeks, but the insurers don't care about that).

  • Steven Roy09/07/2009 at 23:03

I would have thought it would be more likely that wiping the sim card out and in would clean the contact and give you a better connection rather than get rid of static.

They didn't make money off new SIM cards in the days when I got mine, which may explain why mine still works...

It is entirely possible, given the "18 months" comment, that the shop assistant might not have known quite what he was talking about ;)

You mean the manufacturer of the SIM? I didn't see the point - especially since they make money off selling new ones to the public (the manufacturer that is).

SIM cards have almost zero value. The services that they enable access to are worth a lot more to the network providers.

By then the SIM had been transferred from the Nokia to my PDA in order to keep the number. Telling Nokia that my phone has lived in a drawer in case of emergency since the PDA arrived may take a little of the shine off my story.

For proper dedication to one phone, I have a friend who got a phone (I believe it was a very early Nokia) in 2000 and only got rid of it when it irretrievably broke in the middle of last year. She was quite upset about it because it was an easy phone to use and didn't do anything except phone and text people...

SIM and number are linked by the phone company's system. It is very easy to get your number assigned to a new SIM. Even when changing network providers.

All mobile devices use two things to identify themselves on the network:

The device has a unique number - the IMEI

The SIM in the device has another unique number - the IMSI

The make and model of the device can be obtained from the IMEI, so it would be possible to detect that a particular device is using a SIM for the 'wrong" service.

Yeah, can do it (and have done it) from my Sony Ericsson Piece Of S***. Have done for the past 2 years. I just choose not to. Sure it's prolly easier from an iPhone or Google whatdoyercallit, but I simply choose not to. I like the ability to turn myself off every once in a while. The pleasure is all mine, and in this day and age, I take a great deal of satisfaction from that. :)

Your Sony Ericsson Piece Of S*** does not happen to be a P990i? The only consolation for me was that I did not pay for it - it was project money for developing mobile blogging.
