It's tough being an F1 fan at the moment. If you're on Twitter, all you need is the hashtag #f1happyplace and you'll be fine. Whilst you're having a look at that, here are some SPC things to chat about:
- Once again, Jake Humphrey has provided some great insights into the life of a BBC anchor, and what one gets up to when there's no racing to get excited about. Good to know that he misses F1 when it's not around.
- F1 Punter has some thoughts about the upcoming race and the chances of seeing the safety car. We know that last year's German GP helped Piquet to his first F1 podium, all thanks to the SC, but this time we're at the Nurburgring rather than Hockenheim, so how will that affect things?
- On the very sore subject of politics, Maverick has some interesting thoughts on the Pitlane Fanatic Blog, and Joe has also summed it all up in a great post, and really... in the title itself - SOS in morse code..
That should do it for now. It's really tme to start turning our attention to the German GP (the Preview Digest will help), so let us know what you are expecting from the upcoming race. I'll see you in the comments.
hi all (at least those who are still here...)
Hi Guille, bye Lou. (I know it was a while ago now). After procrastinating all night (all week?) I finally sat down and wrote the first instalment of my Goodwood review. I've decided one post isn't going to be enough.
Cool, more Goodwood photos! Nice writeup too. Not quite like being there, but I really love all the photography people have done. Brilliant.
Wow! Allan Moffat's Boss 302 Mustang. I LOVE that car. Talk about blast from the past. Reminds me of sitting in track side as a 5 year old
Thanks. More words tomorrow for the backstory behind the pics. :-)
Off to bed now. I stayed up too late again.
Cheers. Thank's Pat - more time wasted at work ;-)
Gorgeous car in person. I had/have no idea of the history behind it.
Possibly the most famous Australian touring car. Great winning history, although never actually won the championship.
Very cool, thanks.
Hi Pat, bye Pat :-)
Nice pictures!
Morning, everyone. For some light relief after last night's FOTA-FIA mess, watch this!
David Letterman's Top 10 things that sound cool when spoken by a giant robot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=capoqysbgI0
And when I say giant robot, I mean Optimus Prime. :D
If I could watch youtube at work, this would be cool.
Awww, shame! Watch this the moment you get home. Sooo cool!
:D I am yet to see the new movie too :-(
Hola fellow F1 fans
Hey, Joe. Not the best of Wednesdays for F1...
That depends. Williams must be smiling again.
But who knows what kind of F1 they'll be competing in next year...
Oh hell, what have I missed?
For Fu&% sake, I just saw the news on gpupdate.net. I am so tired of this stuff ( I meant to say another word)
Joe Saward actually used the S word in his latest blog entry. Max's assertion that FOTA aren't part of the 2010 championship makes no sense whatsoever.
yeah that was said tongue-in-cheek. I'm not sure how to be happy about this
quite simply - you shouldn't. don't worry about it. ;)
watching Donington 1993 on JTV right now.
Yes. Although that blog post did send us looking for Theodore chassis numbers :D
I cant understand how the powers-that-be have such compete disregard for the fans. It amazes me
yay. I now have a full copy of that race.
Hmmm... must look for your comments on that...
As Jeremy Clarkson would say: "POWERRRRRR"
Just trying to provoke Steven Roy
We're not exactly the ones that vote them into power. Heck, even if (heaven forbid) F1 is destroyed, Bernie will lose his job, but there'll still be an FIA...
It's not only that, it's more profound. People in power positions have always had some kind of (almost complete) disregard for the powerless. I'm not completely shock about that. What amazes me is the complete disregard for the teams and the sponsors (and even CVC). I mean, why don't he shout them 'go away, we don't want you money'. Dictators usually have a better idea of dealing with the money people...
Ooooh, Le Mans replay on our telly. :D
All 24 hours? I'm sure I could find a Tour de France replay if I had time to look. Morning all :)
Morning!
Oooh tour de france
Ooh I thought finding Rafa in F1 Racing was exciting but my own hashtag tops it. Having no phone at work left me so sidepodless I MISSED ALL THE FUN. On the topic of my phone though, it seems to be working fine after its 24 hour rice bath.
Alex started it :)
Does the fact that I retweeted and left #sorryamy on it mean I have caused some sort of rift in the time-space continuum by apologising to myself?
I'm confoooosed!
Ooh, crikey. We haven't imploded yet, so you might be lucky.
What about?
I don't know. Life the universe and everything. What are you talking about? It's like another language!
Ah. Have you read the daily post? The Twitter hashtag #f1happyplace would lead you to find the other tag #sorryamy.
Ah see I don't use Twitter. This hashtag thing is all a bit of a mystery to me....
Understood. People leave hashtags on their messages so that they can be searched for easily and grouped together.
Ah okay :)
It's become an official thing on twitter now but before it was just something people did. Because it's a way to say, "this tweet is about this thing".
this sounds like something Bernie would do :D
For pitys sake! I'm amused that someone dragged a couch onto their roof though :D
If I lived somewhere I could watch something for free from my roof, you bet I would do it :D
It's probably why Bernie keeps threatening to take Melbournes races away. Too many freeloaders http://stkildatoday.blogspot.com/2009/03/free-ticket-to-grand-prix.html :D
That's just what you get for having a city circuit isn't it.... People do get to use the buildings you're driving around.
So...does Jakes latest tweet reveal his mobile number?
I think it does.
I get the feeling thats an accidental tweet
Time for a change of number.
+1 for whoever owns the other number as well!
How do you accidentally post your phonenumber??
I like all the many, many people trying to tell him: http://twitter.com/#search?q=jakehumphreyf1
looks like he forwarded a text message to the twitter post number
my word!
hehe. Fail as a nerd
They're probably all ringing him up to warn him.....
Hehe.
it is tempting.......
actually it looks like he sent photos to the twitter phone number on purpose. Maybe he didn't realise it would also show what number it was sent from
oops. sounds like something I would do.
Hahaha poor Jake
What is a hash tag - is it just a way to search for things?
Yup. I have found a great explanation: http://twitter.pbworks.com/Hashtags
Thanks. I'm not sure I want to learn, but I suspect I'll have to. #sorryamy starts to make sense now.
1) Why don't you want to?
2) Why do you have to?
Just another thing to follow. What with blogs, fickr, web sties etc.
To keep up with the "Joneses", and it looks like a lot of the IT industry is getting heavily into it now too.
That darned interwebs just keeps getting bigger.
Exactly. I was sure I found the end the other day.......
http://www.endoftheinternet.com/
Don't actually fill in your details on that page of course
But....I always fill in my details. I get emails asking for them every day.
If an e-mail told you to go to a web page off a cliff would you?
Boo hiss! Work time :(
Have fun folks
jake broke twitter?
only if someone else went first. I don't like to lead
I think twitter broke his iphone
He overshared.
In Soviet Russia your iPhone breaks you.
If this comment doesn't make sense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Russia_joke#Russian_reversal
Hehe.
i like that his voicemail pin number is: PIN:0
Yes, we've all been listening to his voicemail....... ;-)
i also like that in their infinite wisdom, twitter elect not to remove deleted tweets from search results.
nice.
Oh really? Yikes
Morning peeps
God, I hate packing
hullo.
you need a christine.
Does she have a packing spreadsheet, from wash, iron to bag?
Is it similar to drying clothes? http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Guide+to+Hanging+Laundry
I'd imagine it'd be a lot more detailed but yes, something along those lines :)
I'm trying to escape the F1 politics by following the cricket today except that you can't...
England are playing their home series in some far off foreign country called Wales as the sports organisers follow the money and ditch the traditional venues despite Cardiff having a poor playing surface.
Déjà vu.
oh! I didn't realise we were meant to drop.io out washing.
....and I didn't realise there was a dictionary. Why isn't "anando" in there? I must get an account on the wiki
Yay!
Problem is, Mr C would have to find the origins of the word.
In the comments? This I am also capable of.
So the Wiki tells me how to cook, and hang out my washing. My life is almost sidepodcomplete!
oh don't do that. then I might have to follow up on my claim of joining the wiki
And if you run into problems we can live comment you through most situations such as bungled marriage proposals and the like :)
First ever reference:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/05/09/live-spain-qualifying/#comment-292927
:)
You people are just way to efficient. Why aren't you like me and leave things for a month or two?
He's about to learn about Sidepodtime too I can feel it ;)
Have you not heard of the infamous 'list'?
"You can't buy an Olympic Games; you can't buy a World Cup. You can't create a grand slam. But you can buy a Grand Prix."
this is what today Singapore GP official tells Hong Kong as a reason why Hong Kong should go on and get itself F1 race ...
and that about sums up whats wrong with F1 these days. Boo Singapore man.
Um, no?
Apologies to Maverick - here are some more F1 politics - A Minister in the Austrian Government wants to look into if they can take back the 'Grosse Goldene Ehrenzeichen fur Verdienste um die Republik Osterreich' (Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria) award they gave to Bernie some 10 years back. This is a consequence of his recent comments praising dictators. Like Max, he might be starting his own "Mein Kampf" given the current uncertainty in F1.
http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/13370/900/
exactly ..
but don't worry, F1 will never happen over here in Hong Kong :-)
You can't buy an Olympic Games? You always used to be able to.
well, we had them here last year, only equestrian though, so hard to get them again :-)
:D
Mr C is working his way through a very big list. Most of the improvements to the site have been on there for some time.
Lovely things like the filter & embeded drop.io images are the result
If you suggest anything the standard response is: "I'll add it to the list."
Oooooo. Yes. See this is what happens if you don't sidepodchat for a while
It's about time we wrote some more guides, I think. The Sidepodguide to the Universe sounds like a pretty good idea.
He he
SidepodHikers :)
We have eating and washing. Sidepodguide to sleeping? Na, nobody would read that one.
So long and thanks for all the politics?
Not if Amy had anything to do with it.
I do need help in that respect
You could start watching the cricket, that works well
I like watching cricket!
It can be........relaxing though
Here ya go.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Guide+to+Sleeping
With Shanghai looking like it might drop out of F1, wouldn't that leave the door wide open for Hong Kong? There's a lot of space in the New Territories...
But China already have a GP
O woops.
Note to self: read what the other person wrote first
i also like that in their infinite wisdom, twitter elect not to remove deleted tweets from search results. {Comment #86
How is that legal? Let alone ethical?
there may be space in New Territoreis but no beautiful backdrop :-)
Speaking of sleeping, and Lou seeing imaginary comments...
I have been off work because I have a cold and I have also lost my voice. After being evicted to the couch to sleep last night, I couldn't relax and had imaginary Twitter conversations in my head! The best bit - I knew what was happening and thought "This is fun, let's see what happens!"
Ironic that comes from one of the better GP's on the calendar too...
that is unbelievably... never mind.
I've added
Alex -
1) Get in to bed
2) Get out of bed
3) Close curtains
4) Get in to bed
5) Close laptop
6) Get out of bed
7) Turn off tv and radio
8) Get into bed
9) Close eyes
10) Have Kajillions of winks
11) Have a Megablastic sleep
12) Publish dream to drop.io
that didn't stop Shanghai, did it? ;)
that said, I have a good idea for a backdrop - Hong Kong Disneyland! :D
I notice you wisely didn't add "stop live commenting" because we know that never happens when people pretend to go tot bed
That's true
never can see it in the smog :-)
So Alex, how does someone work on 7 novels at one time?
Slowly?
I don't in reality of course. I have 7 at different stages of fruition. Draft one of one of them was finished just the other day. I am currently working on draft one of another one, while I let the first draft mature in the back of my mind for six weeks.
That's the other answer... The novel that I finished the first draft of the other day was started in 2001... Here's a graph showing the progress...
http://www.gamboling.co.uk/2009/07/draft-one-complete.html
Is this a series or are you more multi-dimensional than that?
All different. I find it, or rather I have found it, much easier to have ideas than I have to actually do them. But I'm sure most people are like that.
Morning. Just.
I am mostly just impressed with other people's ideas
I heard Neil Gaiman on the radio a while back, he said that he often gets approached by people saying they have an idea and could he write it. He said people tend to think the writing part is easy, whereas in reality the idea is the easy part.
I read American Gods the other day, I really liked it
He also added that most writers do not like the task of writing. It is the sense of accomplishment at the end that makes it worthwhile.
I heard that same interview. Everything in that rang true for me.
Putting one word after another is the hardest part. But that's why I've ended up with so many short stories (which are collected in a book that is still available on Amazon ;). Because I have many more ideas than I have time to turn them into novels.
I think several of those ideas could have been stretched into full length novels. Or been parts of novels. Or the characters.
Makes Terry Pratchet seem quite amazing then
Or at least I assume it was the same one. He probably gets interviewed a lot
I don't remember what it was. Simon Mayo podcast maybe, something like that.
They wrote a book together as well didn't they. They wrote at different times of the day from memory. Pratchet in the morning Gaiman in the evening.
Jonathan Ross?
That;s another thought - sidepodcast giude to reading. Although it could get quite long
He was talking about his wife adapting one of his books or something.
Sadly, his writing has slowed down due to his alzheimers :(
But, not that much. Still averaging a book a year at the moment.
That's true - they did too.
Yup.
Good Omens. Very funny book.
A few years I was chatting to a friend via MSN Mess and she had been struggling to put a duvet cover on to a duvet. There followed my text step by step guide: "Zen and the Art of Duvet Covers".
Oooooooh Graphs! :D
YES. You are officially in charge of my memory now.
How did England just get to 429?
It's a rubbish pitch, the question is how did they lose 9 wickets?
Um, because it's England?
Especially with the current Aussie line up playing
Cardiff are desperate for this match to last 5 days and milk it for all the money they can get. They couldn't care less about achieving a result.
So why not play it at the stadium then?
It's quite funny watching Panasar bat
Wrong shape I suppose.
It's funnier watching him field
Lucky the guy can bowl
Good-oh!
Whoever invented Greggs should be given an honor of making awesome food. yummmmmmmmmy.
Oooh, what have you got?
Some sausage rolls and a chocolate ecclair for myself, and a ham salad sandwich for my brother. I'm making a terrible mess with my stuff though...
I just had a Boris Beef Sandwich - the Boris bit is because it has 'Russian dressing'. Anyone care to elaborate on what that might be?
In Soviet Russia, Boris sandwiches you?
I went to the butchers this morning and am currently having a steak sandwich with horseradish in freshly made bread.
I seem to be doing more and more cooking now... fresh bread every couple of days... Whats going on...
Cabbage?
my ex once grew a beard, I called him Monty until he shaved it off.
I get confused whenever Brit's mention Greggs because I think of this one instead. Their food is amazing, but they don't do pastries :D
Cardiff is 20 minutes away. I should pop down with a giant sign saying 'SIDEPODCRICKET'
Sadly I'm lazy :(
I thought he was talking about my brother, and I was really confused because he doesn't cook that well.
From the FIA: Setting the Record Straight
Is it just me, or is the FIA missing the point? FOTA walked out not because of the unanimous approval clause; they walked out because they were told they weren't part of the championship yet...
But here's the interesting part:
And look who worked on it:
The presence of Craw's name there is promising in that at least someone will keep Max in check.
I cannot understand FIA (or do we actually mean Max) - can he not read the statements coming from FOTA? If you look at web pages - many people have completely lost support for F1 this time - and it is one person's fault and only one.
ASDA Set Fuel Prices below 1pound/litre
How's the V-Power experiment going then?
He does - that's why he's replying to it. But he sees in FOTA's message what he wants to see in it - not necessarily what it really means.
I imagine there'll be an update this weekend.
For Doctor Who fans (:D) there an ever so small sneak peak over on the BBC website as part of their preview for the autumn schedule.
Awesome!! Thanks James
From FOTA, no?
My God Peter Stringfellow is disgusting - he's the English Flavio isn't he?
Based that BBC video James mentioned, lots of good stuff too look forward to :D
Can't help but wonder how BBC can be continually strong with new dramas and stuff to check out when ITV's new content (which seems very sparse in occurence as it is) ends up often being extremely dire...
This weekends race might be the first daytime race I might miss, purely because I'm fed up with the politics but the Nurburgring tends to produce some entertaining races so its a hard decision to make.
Yep.
That's been talked about from various people on here in the past day or two. for me, I'm refusing to allow myself to let the stupid background politics and useless arguments corrupting the sport affect my own personal enjoyment of watching it on TV and whatnot, especially as I only tend to see the race and no quali/practise now. No matter how frustratingly dimwitted the FOTA/FIA war is, I still love everything that happens on track and F1 itself.
I might just watch quali and the race without the buildup (which will mean I will miss the walking and talking of Jake) and hope the race prevents them talking about the politics too much :D
Hear hear. Don't do it to yourself James ( and anyone else thinking of not watching )
You'll regret it if it's a good race!
Plus when Rubens wins this weekend and you miss it, you'll really regret it :P
Only thing going for it is that it looks like rain this weekend.
Then I'm watching :D
Perhaps you could listen to the parade lap as part of the build up. We rarely even talk about the race let alone the politics ;)
Hehe I listened to the last one, and some of the one before that. Trouble is my family always seems to need me for something on a Saturday morning.
Sunday morning did you mean?
The more sugar you eat before you call in the better!
Yes, I meant Sunday *facepalm*
I was just checking :)
Hyper is the name of the game!
I'm contemplating doing a Star Wars marathon instead. Haven't done it since the release of Episode 3 at the Cinema. All 6 films in a row. 8O
Phantom Menace - extended HD fanedit
Attack of the Clones - extended HD fan edit
Clone Wars cartoons and film in HD
Revenge of the Sith - extended HD fanedit
A New Hope - HD Remastered Fanedited to better than original edition - HAN SHOOTS FIRST!
Empire Strikes Back - HD
Return of the Jedi - HD
Should keep me busy for a little while. :D
Are you supposed to watch them in the proper order or the order they were released?
Proper order.
1, 2, clone wars, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Release order puts the start of the story in the middle, the end in the middle and the middle at the beginning and the end.
It's like watching Pulp Fiction. :D
Lukeh if you enjoyed the other clip, I think you'll like this even more :D
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a164294/doctor-who-waters-of-mars-preview-clip.html
A gem from pitmonster over on pitlanefanatic that I thought I'd share...
do you think it's possible to avoid f1 talk altogether?
We actually came really close last time except for the predictions.
And Scott.
LOL!
Genius!
it should be a challenge :)
Well everything was tangentially connected I guess
true. might be impossible actually. i like the idea of trying though.
I mean Our Song is about F1 but it comes from #f1happyplace
Woah!
it would be kinda hard not to mention the hashtag the whole show too.
silly idea mr. c. as you were.
It is okay to talk about F1 as long as it is things like Giggles'll Fix It, Our Song and Describe a Driver in 3 Words. Anything else is off the menu.
I am sure we have original ideas in there somewhere...
That's what I reckon. All that kind of goodness is good :)
I have some ideas that are new and everything... :)
We've also got the quiz, must do the wiki page I best do that tonight. And also Just an F1 Minute could eventually hit the airwaves!
GEN.I.US!
I take it that you liked it?
I want Doctor Who now :D
Seems very creepy. Which is goooooood. although Stephen Moffat does creepy the best out of the Dr Who writers...
I'm watching last night Torchwood's now. This is everything the show always should have been...
Yep, except for destroying the hub obviously :P
Cardiff Bay will never be the same again
Here's the set of subjects ready to be drawn out of the Apple box that I set up a few weeks ago:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-110
They have kind of killed the fun of going there now, considering they have blown it up :(
did i miss something?
Is that the yes/no one or the no umm/ahh one?
You were selotaping a camera to a table at the time!
i was? that's sounds like something i'd do, but i don't remember.
Was that because of the earthquake I caused?
The quiz is the yes/no one.
The Just an F1 Minute one you have to speak for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition. So you can't say the same word twice. On the radio version people interrupt each other. In this version the idea was when people ran out of steam we would record their time and have a league table.
We didn't get to do the F1 minute one, and I probably shouldn't have mentioned it because it was two games at the same time. I probably should have saved it up for another occasion. But it's all good!
ahhh. i had no headphones.
i blame steven of course.
Yup it was earthquake related :)
Mr C listened to me talking about the competition, fixed the earthquake, and came back and was the first person to take part in the competition, so no wonder he was confused!
i know someone who will ace this game.
i've already taken part? how did i do??
See I knew this was confusing!
i remember an earthquake, the rest is a mystery to me.
You took part in the yes no competition... What is the piece of F1 memorabilia that I have. You didn't get it right!
oooh that one. right.
where did the apple box come into it?
The one with the beard.
that's different for the question given to scott at silverstone... right?
*head explodes*
:D
hahaha... oh goodness...
There are two things...
1) The Competion
What bit of F1 Memorabilia does Alex own. Ask any question which can be answered yes / no. And then after hearing the answer take a guess. Win a hat from any F1 team of your choice.
2) Just an F1 Minute - We haven't done this one on the show - but I mentioned it when Mr C couldn't hear
Talk for 1 Minute on a topic I pull out of my apple box without hesitation, deviation or repetition. Person who goes for longest in the season wins.
maybe i need to listen back to the parade lap during week :(
am with you now.
Don't worry it was my fault. Because I thought people could call in and do both I mentioned them both one after the other and then everyone in the comments got confused too.
Ah, that was fun. What else can we confuse him with?
We could talk about some things from your blog ;)
Hehehe.
I mean now I've found that he doesn't listen to the show that I'm on either... And he's even on it ;)
Or we could reach for the classics and start talking about crochet.
Not sure about crochet. I can knit a little bit though.
:P
There was a conversation, when I think you were on your yacht (or narrowboat or whathaveyou) about some crochet which had enabled mathmaticians to create a physical representation of a mathematical structure for the very first time. It was the same day Mr C learned about Speed tape from memory.
me = mind blown!
That sounds like the best idea for a game - "Mr C for Confused"
and the time nick asked what was in the other half of my can of air.
Ah yes. It was all go!
don't.you.dare!
;)
But at least we know that Mr C has compelling mutterings.
It was your idea, back in April, remember?
Wow. I miss out on all the good stuff.
Does anyone know if you can eat cook's chocolate without cooking it? There's a severe food shortage in my kitchen...
The crochet was my fault... I had, surprise surprise, been to an exhibition. LPG had been too and then the conversation went quite complicated!
http://www.toroidalsnark.net/mathknit.html
Hello Everyone...
I go away for just 1 day and the f1 world decides to have some politics...Not Fair..
Don't mention the war :-)
War is under-appreciated!
Apparently the Tour de france has started. despite the fact noone has bothered to report it or put it on the news... £10 bets that it haven't started are a bad idea at this point.
TdF has been pretty good so far, somebody has forgotten to tell Armstrong how old he is.
I cant believe it is on, i have seen no publicity or news about it at all!
I am even following LA on twitter!
Afternoon all.
They report it whenever Mark Cavendish wins stages. ;)
It was also quite odd to see them dropping through Monaco and under the Grand Hotel
He looked too busy to be sending tweets
Oh good, I thought I was the only one. But there will always be more politics, this is F1 ;)
What!
I give up on cycling...
He's not sending messages from his bike is he?
I think f1 needs a 24 hour rolling news channel when things like this happen...
Drip Drip Drip is no fun :)
Highlights tucked away on ITV4 - 7pm tonight
Having looked back he sent some ater the TTT which i suspect is either a viaduct stage or a team time trial
there is no news?
Ah, i havent watched itv for weeks
i haven't watched itv since brazil.
shots of closed of doors for several hours whilst journalists speculate as to what is going on behind them, empty podiums whilst the presenter informs us the press conference should be 'any (F1)minute now...'
Which is why we need the news channel...
there format requires them to create news where none previously existed ;)
But! but what about...uuhh.. y..nope that was bbc..... OH! ...no that was channel 4... uurmm...
...yeah that sounds right.
Think I've only watched Champions League football since then
I think the touring cars and Lemans are the only 2 things i can remember watching on Itv, and that was Itv 4
I used to nick my mother's cooking chocolate all the time as a kid and I m still here. I am not sure if you can unlimited quantities of it but you can have some.
You can - it generally doesn't taste that good though.
There wasn't even any decent films on ITV1 at Christmas, I remember asking why ITV put all their good(ish) stuff on ITV2-4
It's Green & Black's and I'll let you know if it kills me in an hour or so...
I sometimes watch the Red Bull Air races but that's itv4 again.
Should be ok then - G&B's is normally pretty good.
Random question; is there a key that functions like a PC 'delete' key on the mac - i.e. deletes text in front of the cursor?
There are shown on ITV1 on a Monday or Tuesday night
Thats the problem with Itv.. I would enjoy watching something like that, but because 95% of the channel is so rubbish i never know about the 5%of decent stuff which is on!
i think gmm have that covered.
Forget the Star Wars marathon this weekend - Watchmen Directors Cut just arrived among a stack of other films. :D
They make stuff up.
creating a story, and reporting made up stuff are subtly but crucialy different
I have just realised something really bad... now that there has been practising last weekend do you think that's raised the expectations?
*gulp*
I watched the UAE cut, it was about 40 mins shorter than it should have been and i have no idea what on earth happened at the end
Also... Do you think Mr C should become Mr Eee?
Mystery?
mr. eeepC?
oh yes!
Mr T, fool!
I really need to drive to the supermarket and do some shopping, but i have no motivation, the sofa is king.
Any ideas?
That's right.
what does the wiki suggest?
i only have one. i need at least four.
http://www.trade2win.com/boards/attachments/first-steps/33794d1204036562-american-dream-car-
Do it online and get them to drive your shopping to you.
NO!
Then you will be Mr EeeePc.
By the way, and I'm sure I missed something is the 4 eeePcs the solution to not having "this is a wirecast" all the time but still have video?
The DC is about 30 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. :D
Also have Clerks 2, Iron Man, Akira, Band Of Brothers, War Inc, Vantage Point, Bourne Trilogy and Kill Bill V1 & V2 on Bluray to watch. :D
I cant find anything!
I cant trust them!
Oh dear...
boo!
:)
nope. the four eeepc solution would allow us to mute individual skype channels. instead of having to say "someone's typing / coughing, please shush when it's not your turn". during a panel. we could just turn the offender down.
we're awaiting an update to wirecast before buying it (and also saving up the £300+ required). basically it doesn't yet stream to iphone 3.0 properly, but when it does, we're in.
Ah... was thinking that you could have the four eeeepcs behind Christine and the people on Video full screen and then you'd be away :)
that's exactly what leo has (he had another one of my ideas first).
we don't actually have the bandwidth to stream skype video. no matter how many eeepc's we have. we'll need a leased line. or fibre.
Really no!
damn you are a spoilsport.
Even if you had 10?
I am not a spoilsport, I am a realist :)
10 what?
Awww. He only wants a few little ones ;)
being a realist makes you a spoilsport?
Yes it does.
I was only joking. 10 Eees. See you could want that many, but actually you only want a few.
If it's any help I don't have any Eeees :(
Or any new MacBookPros :(
it still won't help though?
we need kathi's bandwidth to get the pictures onto the eeepc's. displaying the images is easy, getting hold of them in the first place (without lots of buffering) is tricky.
Yup got it, I was being silly.
but you're a broadcaster now. you have your own show (so i heard). you need a new mbp.
That's true :) Hmmm.
Maybe what I need, what we all need, is a broadcast show that makes us money rather than costing us money! ;)
hehe. good luck with that.
:)
Welcome to AlexCast the live cast where Alex Casts things.
Welcome to AlexCast the live cast where Alex Casts things.
Welcome to AlexCast the live cast where Alex Casts things.
Welcome to AlexCast the live cast where Alex Casts things.
This show is sponsored by Steve's fishing rods.
I like casting off a line with steve's fishing rods - they're the best.
We are also brought to you in association with Hyperboic Crochet, when you cast off on your knitting think of Hyperbolic Crochet.
Cuh. I did all of that and I don't have a MBP yet :(
So you need to buy a bunch of computers and ship them to Kathi along with a camera and lighting. She could then set all that up and all you need to do is take one feed from her and do a picture in picture with her feed. Easy. It could be a little bit expensive though.
Good idea!
I think they'd need a lot of eeepcs for that though.
I think Christine may say know and I would have to agree
Is there an eeepcs futures market. I think I have a plan.
Well I mean it's not a good idea in reality. Just Sidepodreality.
we're going to move into kathi's house anyway. she said it was fine.
She's building us an extension too, for the other people who want to come too.
Apparently the FIA thinks we are close to a new Concorde Agreement. I think Max has finally gone senile.
I was forced to leave a rather long comment. I bet this one gets past Joe's moderation process. He seems to be less inclined to cut recently.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/07/09/957/
I think i have discovered the meaning of life...
Hunger vs Laziness
is gavin coming? he has an eeepc.
Good thinking fourstar has an eeepc
brilliant.
Alonso says he hasn't been talking to Ferrari. But he would say that wouldn't he?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76788
Is Kathi's extension going to be cheaper than just shipping her equipment and doing the picture in picture deal?
don't care. i want super fast broadband too.
it's only fair.
I think they could just buy Setanta. Then they'd have a whole tv network.
tv is dead.
Do you think if we actually moved in with Kathi we could get her on a show?
Apparently the internet will reach its optimum speed in 2016, then the environmentalists will change there mind about global warming and blame it all on the internet instead
Fourstar has 24Mg Broadband. The only question is what does he get upstream? He doesn't live as far away as Finland.
But you could buy the whole station and sell off all the stuff that isn't eepcs, video cameras mics pop shields and bandwidth
There will be the inevitable, 'I need to go shopping'
Oh, hi everybody.
Exactly
She said last weekend she would be on any show where there were no points.
Mr C last weekend said how he didn't like Eeepcs because they were too complicated and how he didn't need more than 1. People change.
hehe. i fixed it though. me likes 'em again.
Not yet.
When there's enough bandwidth to stream full 1080P video with uncompressed audio on demand and not have to wait for buffering - then TV will be dead.
Although - download limits will have to be abolished - 1 film could hit 50gb.
He doesn't really need to talk to them anymore if he has signed a deal, remember he sorted his deal with McLaren at the start of the preceding season.
Yes but FOTA since yesterday's walkout has been very quiet - too quiet. My hunch is they have gone back to their plan for a break-away series and a statement during the week-end to this effect will be announced. I am just not quite sure what FIA are hoping to gain from this fight and then attempting to play the innocent!
By the time that happens widely enough to be worthwhile 1080P will be like black and white TV
yes it is. the business model behind television stations is broken beyond repair. 1080p has no bearing on nothing.
You have colour?
the vast majority of people don't care about 1080p. it's irrelevant to anyone other than blueray owners.
Only 3 at the moment, but i am saving up for all 16 ;)
Absolutely. Scroll back to the question earlier today somebody asked, "why is BBC good and ITV so rubbish". And this is why.
The business model of tv is broken. (BBC isn't a business so it's different)
:D
We already had two years of rumours that he was going to Ferrari by then
Maybe, but by the same token, the vast majority of people dont care about video streaming, its irrelevent to over 80% of the worlds population
110% agreement from me. setanta is just the first of many. am betting on motors tv being next.
I really hope there is a breakaway but I don't see it happening now
ITV must be soon. They stopped filming Heartbeat! The end is nigh.
video streaming can afford to fail. it costs next to nothing to do. television costs thousands and thousands to transmit
And they moved Coronation Street!
The bbc is a big problem in this country, the way it is run means that others simply cant compete, It will probably be wound down to a news service in 5-10 years time
And they're changing the theme music of The Bill!?!?!?!
Max is just playing "Mr C for Confused" (Comment #268)
Problem is, he's confused everyone else too
Ding ding ding ding... ;)
Is the correct answer.
Most TV's sold at the moment are 1376x768 - even 720p video can be easily 20mb/s
Hell, even 576p vdieo can be 10mb/s on a dvd.
The quality of iPlayer footage when scaled up is pretty dreadful - hence why they've started iPlayerHD streaming
Pretty much the only channel I watch anything from. BBC isn't a problem at all.
Nelson Piquet JR is now tweeting videos recording with/by him
wohoo! i managed to get home, which means i have a bit of time to relax this evening before having to go back to school and do tech :( i'm so tired, i hate Thursdays.
so erm hi, how is everyone?
That makes it the problem though, its dominating everything.
Its the only channel i watch as well, but i worry about its dominance.
http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/07/09/baby-panda-thursday-20/
Much as it pains me to suggest this to the 1080P people here, because I would love everything to be as high definition as possible.
My mum can understand and uses the iPlayer and she thinks she can't use computers (she can't really except things like this). She wouldn't know what 1080P was, and if you explained it she would say, "that's nice dear".
Bet that's true for a lot of people.
you are soooo on the wrong track here. but fair enough, it's really not worth arguing about.
i would suggest at some point you look at the costs of creating a programme like inside grand prix for motors tv, versus what it costs us to make something similar.
the figures no longer add up, but if you're only concerned about resolution you carry right on.
awww :)
My office is not the most tech savvy place in the world, but the people are all iPlayer this and Sky+ that. I don't remember the last time someone just "put the TV on."
I wonder if it is now not too late. Was the break-away a FOTA Bluff? I have sympathy with FOTA because you simply do not know what the FIA is up to or what they ultimately want?
I like this quote: "Imagine for a second you will share a team with Felipe Massa, do you think you could have the same problems you had with Lewis Hamilton?" FA: "No, because Flavio will manage the situation!"
Giving nothing away :-)
and another slight at ron. i likes it.
And how much does the bandwidth to send say.. 400mb to 2 million people cost? 780ish terabytes...
With immediate start upon clicking the play button? Which is what you have with TV...
Or another admission he doesnt like to be pushed by a team mate ;)
Honestly I do not think Fernando and Felipe would have too many problems as team mates - generally Fernando will be quicker other than the few tracks that suite Felipe. Also Felipe is a popular team mate.
Apparently all of us are going to FInland to live with Kathi.
Lets not go there again :P
It is not a requirement. But the option is there.
oo i'm up for that :D... will i be able to fly back for goodwood and school and stuff? lol
Thats the biggest problem, alongside the fact the country doesnt have the infrustructure.
no matter how many 50ps go in the jar, there is no way to pay to give the country the bandwidth it needs. the more people who discover streaming, the more redundant it will become.
very, very little. i promise you, i've seen the figures. whatever you think it costs, you're wrong.
especially when you look at how much murdoch's satellite orbiting the earth costs to run.
I think it's easier for FOTA to get some circuits together at short notice than it is for the FIA to get some replacement teams (more importantly, cars) together. Likelihood is that they'd end up having to upgrade F2. Main problem for FOTA would be a tyre supplier.
Of course. We're not kidnapping you.
I think they would have gone ahead with it had they not got the deal they were after. Quite why they gave away there negotiating position without anything in witing is beyond me. What they did was the same as a poker player announcing he had a monster hand just as the other guy was about to put his chips in.
brilliant! :) i'll come :) are thursdays any better in finland? ;)
I am not sure the Tyre supplier is such a problem - think what the advertising potential would be? Michelin could come back but would prefer a "competitor" rather than single supplier.
Not sure yet. We'll ask Kathi next time she's around.
it's not a problem, honestly. do you have any idea what it costs to run a television station?
They have similar styles. The tracks that suit one will suit the other
I think it should be compulsory.
Goodwood yes but not school. They apparenty have schools in Finland.
yeah but i like my school :P i've been there for like 13 years...
Assuming you can get the satellite to launch in the first place. And satellites only live so long.
Its called TRUST - they held too much for the FIA. I think this is why the silence as they will want more security next time. It is very evident that if FOTA formed a break-away that is where the majority (90% plus) of fans would follow.
I think its about 75K to be on the lower echalons of skys epg
But thats not the point, who is going to pay to lay fibre optic cables? especialy to places that wont be profitable for years and years
Getting tyres is easy. Even if they had to pay for them it is minor.
Everyone has to leave school one day
Not necessarily, part of the problem is the length of the line - e.g. if you live 3 miles from a 8mb/s exchange you only get 1mb/s. If the lines were upgraded the drop off wouldn't be anywhere near as bad, and that wouldn't actually cost a fortune.
Michalin would throw them at FOTA by the bucketload to get back at max
i'll move to finland next year then ;)
Yes but still think Felipe might be that little bit better on Turkey and Brazil - speculation though. Personally I think Felipe is a better driver than most people think, he is just not the most complete driver.
Stay on as a teacher?
Agreed. Michelin and Goodyear are readily available.
why do you need them? it's only an issue if you're talking about live programmes. and there aren't actually that many of them any more.
Interesting tweet from JA:
That'll hurt their 2009 campaign.
Nationally it could, and who is going to pay for it? There is no incentive for BT or anyone else to do anything about it as it has to be opened up to all their competitors
You beat me to posting this - implication moving to a new team for next year?
They are the only programmes making money though!
You cant skip the ads so easily if your watching live sport or Britain factor
The Brawn GP Fan Blog guy on Twitter raised a very interesting point - might he be on his way back to Brackley to replace Jorg Zander? That's a very good theory...
Maybe even Brawn? Geoff's been at Brackley before...
Cable = Bad = Single point of failure
Distributed Wireless = Good = Multiple points of failure
A key example is that the only thing that survived in New Orleans was the distributed wifi CCTV system. everything that relied on cables failed.
Each point of presence should extent the cloud and share the load of distribution for popular programs / downloads.
if it doesn't cost you as much to transmit. you don't need to make as much?
Michelin would want a competitor though. Of course they may supply for the first year without a competitor and advertise against Bridgestone.
You will not get a good room then. All the good ones will be gone.
Hunger vs laziness update!
If you are near a sainsburys watch out, i dont shop nice :D
You have to watch live so you can vote. They are the shows that make money. But you could do that even better online :)
ahh go on then, who needs A Levels anyways :P
Ah! very true!
peer-to-peer is certainly a viable solution. and it effectively costs nothing to distribute content that way. you wouldn't need to sell many ads to make a profit that way ;)
He has only been there a year or so. His job is to take Newey designs and engineer in some reliability. He was signed because Newey listens to him and lets him modify his designs.
Seems resonable
like i said earlier. television as we know it dead. it's already had its day. the only question is how long it will struggle on?
Like the newspapers.
Good point there on the reliability bit. Would a (pardon the pun) Wil-less Red Bull team still have a reliable car underneath them next year?
Are A levels recognised in Finland. Of course if sidepodcast is going to employ us all I am sure they will trust you to be honest about your qualifications.
That would be my concern
exactly.
And while it's annoying. DOGS are the future.
What's the point of knowing that this channel is UKTV? None?
They are getting us ready to accept in the top left corner "Nike". Because then even if it's torrented it doesn't go away.
(this isn't my original thought)
It will still be there, tvs are becoming computors and computors are becoming tvs.
A lot of people will want to keep the passivness of tv though. A box you just turn on and shows you things randomly does appeal to non techy people.
That's how the original iPlayer worked (back when you had to download everything) but then they changed it. I can't remember why.
i agree with it entirely though.
hello. how are you all today?
TDF Stage 6 just finished.
They're going to a LOT of countries this year. They were in Monaco, they're now in Spain, and they'll also go to Andorra and Switzerland. Add France and you get 5 countries...
still does, doesn't it?
Shouldn't they change the name?
To what, exactly?
well, they're actually going around France... ;-)
Tour de a bit more than just France?
not necessarily true. we've ditched our tv, we no longer watch it, it's a useless piece of technology.
our computer became our tv, but not vice-versa.
that sounds rather awkward... :D
:P
but you're techies...
early adopters. we did it because it makes sense. because tv has nothing to offer us anymore.
Our bandwith costs for the small amount of hosting we do is 30p/gb
We charge the customers at 32p/gb
They have always visited other countries. It started in England a few years ago.
Mind you the British F3 championship regularly has rounds in other countries. Maybe national boundaries have no meaning any more.
Yea, but that's how you find out where technology is going before it gets there.
Putting some humour back into the FIA political mess
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO8TLBn7z1k&feature=related
I like the line "Don't worry Alonso already drives a tank"
apparently, not since the beginning of this year.
I'll see if I can find the talk... But the guy who made it made a very interesting point. He worked out that you could making an episode of Sex and the City (pay actors, screenwriter, etc), print it onto DVDs which instead of saying Sex and the City on the cover of the DVD said, "Sex and the City brought to you by blah" and post them to everyone in Australia for less money than it cost you to sponsor the show on TV per episode in Australia.
That's how you know TV is broken.
Hmmm... Methinks I already posted this a couple of weeks back. Oh well.
lucky you that live in the UK... BBC, real broadband,... :-(
I still need TV because most of the content I want to see is not on internet
here's another example.
in the chip-shop down the road, the girl behind the counter spends all day watching iplayer (it's not a busy chippy) on a laptop. not a television in the corner.
don't tell me the chip-shop is techy? they only deal in cash.
Sorry - but I think the circumstance seem to make it currently even more appropriate!
I guess so, but then I watch TV on huge widescreens now. They don't exactly come with the laptop...
that just stupid. we only pay $0.17. you need to shop around!
i can tell you it costs apple roughly $0.05 to deliver a HD movie and their prices will drop with economies of scale (when blockbuster go out of business).
Funnily enough, I posted it the day after FOTA announced a breakaway. :D
sorry, not their prices. their costs will drop.
prices likely to go up, along with profit.
Next you will be trying to tell me her computer isn't full of chips
Now I'm really annoyed I can't find this talk anywhere. If only I'd sky + ed it.
UK hosting... not US.
We also don't do that much so we don't get it cheap.
Apples HD movies aren't spectacularly good. 720p and files sizes have to be under 4gb *for the loonies who insist on sticking with Fat32...* Most hover around 3gb looking at it.
But then no serious advertiser would go for that. Has any straight-to-DVD feature ever become famous? That's what TV is for.
same price for europe, sir. and the amount you send out has no bearing on it:
http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#pricing
like i said. shop around.
Mr. C, a question about sounds in the Doohickey... When I open it for the first time, it makes a [sound like crystal crashing], and then it does nothing else. This is independent of the 'enable sounds' button state. Is this the expected behaviour? (running FF3.5 under Linux)
But the point is. If that's the cost of it... And all you're paying for is the concentrating effect that "people just watch what's on". Then when you take away that part. The value of TV is gone.
But then, who can take it away from TV? It'll be the Internet - but still in the form of TV...
Errrr....
Only ones I can think of are:
Darwin Awards and The Contract - oh and 4 Futurama movies... ;)
Futurama doesn't count - they started on TV. :P
The difference is you can create your own schedule and you don't need to be in a praticular place at a particular time.
ff3.5 is currently broken. will try and fix next week, but i think mozilla are at fault.
ok, thanks
That's true, but then, isn't that true even now?
Didn't think so. :D
An evening with Kevin Smith? Although he was a director, writer and actor before he did them.
and it can come down the pipe overnight, when the bandwidth is available.
again. you're not even on the right page with this kinda comment.
that's like saying people won't buy mp3's because FLAC is sooo much better.
This is... cute?
http://www.npiquet.com/news.asp
"Piquet plays Cupid on Twitter!"
Right.
And once that happens the reason to pay the tv companies is gone.
YouTube simply becomes your new TV company.
PS. Mr C I knew there was something I meant to send you... And now I've spent 10 minutes trying to find it. No idea if it helps but:
http://www.simplecdn.com/savings
yup. or hulu, or anyone who feels up to it. don't write off amazon either.
have looked into it. the £175 setup fee is a bit of a deal breaker.
but somehow, i don't think the TV companies are going away. Much in the same way that plays didn't go away when movies became popular, or movies didn't go away when TV hit the bigtime, TV is here to stay.
Hey all, just on the bus home from work and we've probably only moved about 300m in total. Traffic is terrible.
Didn't spot that :(
Ok, so my, and many other peoples opinion is wrong because...??
I don't buy MP3's or FLAC online - well - apart from a single purchase of 30 Crowded House shows from their US tour as the CD's couldn't be shipped to the UK... which sucked as I'd would have preferred them.
Anyway - FLAC is massively better than MP3 - althought he audio quality of many new releases has gone to hell just through the simple creation of MP3s in the first place. Damn audio compression and the loudness war.
*end audio rant*
Because you are betamax
As long as flash and the MS version *silverthingy* goes away sooner rather than later.
In the nicest possible way of course ;)
A high quality format still in use?
You also have laserdisc player too.
But just because they are better doesn't mean they will win.
I don't think TVs are going away. TV companies will become production companies is my guess.
mp3's are selling and flac's are not. at least not in any number worth discussing.
In a bit of news totally worthy of a "Sorry, Amy", Ron Walker has said that, "If the disunity continues Melbourne will seriously consider its position on continuing with Formula One..."
He's also calling on Max to step down - the first race promoter to do so. But Ron Walker is a pretty big name in the F1 world.
w00t!
but production companies already exist. TV networks rarely produce their own content now.
And a very good friend of Bernie's.
and that's the problem.
none of this discussion has been to do with quality. i actually give up. sorry, i tried.
Good point there, Alex.
Forget it - I'll go away...
TTFN
This sounds like arguments I used to listen to at school. One day everyone will buy separate tuners and amplifiers and graphic equalisers and speakers because it is the only way to get a particular note to sound right.
Truth is the vast majority of people don't care about ultimate quality. I am sure if you go back in time you will find people saying newspapers won't work because the paper quality is so poor.
Go Ron. He likes throwing his weight around.
Anyway as for Mr C and Christine living without the television let me just quote William Gibson:
"The future is here, it's just not evenly distributed yet."
I think Joe has stopped moderating controversial comments. There is no way the comment after mine would have been published a couple of weeks ago.
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/07/09/957/
I think he'll take it down later.
Sidepodscience
Historic Atom Smasher Reduced to Rubble and Revelry
There must be something we could buy that and use it for.
Create a black hole and wipe out the solar system?
Oh wait the French already have that ;)
If we laid it on top of an F1 circuit would our particle, or as Iike to call it car, go faster than a brawn?
Preferable not the Solar System just with Max in the black hoe!
I wonder what the biggest particle it can accelerate is. I would like to accelerate a Max particle in one direction and a Bernie particle in the other just to see what such a collision produced.
5 weeks have passed and nothing's moved on. FOTA v.s. FIA round 2?
I wouldn't want to create a universe of Max and Bernie - that's just too much to bear. :P
A new element F1?
A parallel universe that no one else shares!
I find it funny people thinking of it as something monstrously big... just for having us 50 years later saying the same of the LHC. In 50 years we'll be looking back and see the LHC as just a small ring...?
Bernie woud just end up owning Max same as he does in this universe.
All good sequals have a subtitle...
I wonder what this one could be?
FOTA vs FIA 2: The Eiffel Gambit
The LHC will look like a toy and its price will not look as insane as it does today.
but lately sequels number 2 are just a build up for the third and final movie...
Trouble is there is bound to be a third part, to make this a trilogy :P
:-)
Its very difficult to convince people a white elephant is in fact grey...
How about:
FOTA v FIA 2: Formel 1 über Alles
You know that Sun is up song which was played quite a lot on the practice show the other day?
It was actually the song that was played twice at the same time on a parade lap earlier in the run.
Christine *really* likes playing that song :)
FOTA v FIA 3: The Rise of Vatanen
?
Oops.
FOTA vs FIA 2: The empire strikes back (a classic that just fits there...)
As long as it is not Max strikes back
This is turning into Star Wars now :D
Ooooh, me likey... :D
Don't tell me Max is actually LDM's father... ;)
Is it too much to ask for:
1st movie - Obie-wan dies - Breakaway series dies
2nd movie - Yoda dies - Max resigns
3rd movie - Darth vader dies - Bernie resigns
Surely what power bases Max has must be getting annoyed. I still want to know exactly WHY FIA seem to be changing their mind - what purpose does it serve - can it really be to break FOTA? Very confused.
:D :D
not, only lewis' father...
:D
Max and Yoda, compare you should not!
Yoda Dies in the 2nd film!?
WT...? Really!?
Well Bernie and Yoda compared on drop.io they are
Whoops
Spoilers!! :)
At least I haven't said who wins at the end of cool runnings - phew!
:D
If you have seen Cool Runnings then the two are the same more or less
Ive seen them before...
I must have been a little distracted or something.
Its outrageous though, he shouldn't have been allowed to die.
He doesn't really he just becomes more transparent.
I do not want Max or Bernie in an sequel, have they not done enough damage in this universe - they should be eternally banished and the history books re-written.
Hehe, Is he there at the end of the third one? if so i am a fool
JA's article is VERY interesting:
Both sides agree F1 row is close to conclusion
Most interesting part for me:
I thought the teams hated CVC? But well, at least FOTA knows who holds the true power...
Barrichello uses a mac - http://twitpic.com/9srv2
Hehehehe :)
Lukeh, you know what you gotta do to that pic.
I'm already on it!
:)
grrr i have to go out and do tech for a silly play now. back later everyone
Virgin sposorship has gone from his visor!
Just spotted this one: http://twitpic.com/940rj
Ghostbusters!
It's still there - to the left of Ray-Ban.
Tiny, they have moved it...
I wonder if the car sponsorship will be less now as well
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/rubensspc-jpg
:)
The guy has taste!
And Disneyland: http://twitpic.com/8sphw
When I saw this pic, I remember his story about going with Ayrton to Tokyo Disneyland...
But back to the pic - it's actually cool that Rubens looks like a typical dad bringing his kids to Disneyland! :)
Most interesting part for me?
FOTA have buffering issues too? They need to move to Finland!
:P
:D They will move to Finland - it was on the rumored breakaway calendar. ;)
Actually panic over, it appears to be the same as it was on his yellow helmet at silverstone

And on that bombshell, I'm off to bed.
Night, everyone! :)
Hope it goes well. :)

I hadn't heard that Bourdais' job was on the line this weekend, but he's dismissed it as rubbish anyway!
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76794
Why do I have this feeling that if he's gonna be fired midseason, he won't get any warnings? Oh well. Later!
I was thinking the same thing.
Rubens' motorhome - http://twitpic.com/9ssy9
He chose a REALLY bad time to take that picture
It's about time we had some mid-season shakeups.
Okay so...
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76802
FOTA pushing ahead with breakaway
More importantly, how long have Autosport been linking to their own stories mid-post?
Its on again? I've been out of tune for 24 hours.
The only thing on the radar is Jaime Alguersuari confidence of having an STR seat next year.
Just seen that. I knew the peace wouldn't last :(
We're in the same place we were before the British GP in a way, nothing has been done in the last three weeks.
Whatever happened to Piquet being replaced by Grosjean. That has died down a bit now too.
I thought Silverstone was his last chance?
didn't he do OK at silverstone?
He beat Alonso at Silverstone.
12th was his joint second best finish of the season, so for him, yes.
Its the mirror on the ceiling and what's on the screen that makes it seriously disturbing!
He made a big deal out of that on his twitter.
He hasn't scored any points though, rubbish car or not.
for a while in the column pieces. may be a first for a new piece.
Interesting. I'm not sure I like it.
depends if it gets excessive i guess.
they have enough historical material for every sentence to be a link.
first time they had an equal car too apparently.
Was it not more that he had one-stop and also Alonso could not get ahead of Heidfeld in the early part of the race?
according to autosport, tilke has been fiddling with the track in germany again:
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1312566
i'd kinda be happy with that, if they looped-the-loop too.
Rubens pic has been removed!
Yeah, probably something like that. Being beaten fairly by your team mate doesn't happen in alonso-land without an appendix of excuses
For those thinking about calling in for the parade lap competition and having the chance to win a cap from any of the current F1 teams you can swot up here: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Yes/No+Competition
That sounds exciting, i would love to do it, but i am only 90% sure i will be around on sunday...
the link is a bit iffy
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Parade+Lap+Contests
Should help
Yeah that's really annoying I shouldn't have called it that... Not sure I can change the name of the page now
Sometimes it takes the wiki a few minutes to sort itself out, but I don't know whether the slash is confusing it.
I can.
Pasting the correct link into the doohicky breaks it :(
Ah good :)
Yeah the slash was a bad idea
Does this work?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Yes-No+Competition
that's what axle said too.
Yes :)
I was thinking the same joke!
OMG
You two should start a comedy double act.
that esp will com in handy on sunday.
or maybe we've been doing this too long?
:)
Quick we need to think of something we disagree on.
Actually this happened before... You don't like beans or something crazy like that ;)
can i be ernie?
It must have been mushrooms.
Ah yes mushrooms that was it!
How do you know it must have been? Is that the only thing he doesn't like?
Only if I can be Bert ;)
:D
So far I have only discovered mushrooms and prawn cocktail crisps. I refuse to believe that is all though.
Been replaced with another shot of his motor home the video showing an F1 race- still has the mirror on the ceiling though!
Incredible. Especially since both of those things are great!
Does he like Marmite?
(I like how we're talking about him as though he's not in the room ;)
So we have a comedy duo and a kids tv line up now, is there SidepodTV coming on soon like?
yup. we're going to see how many pints of water christine can drink before the safety car comes out.
SidepodAttick
Now there's something for Sunday ;)
http://twitpic.com/9sw61
Seems strange that he isnt using it for doohicky...
Erm, not sure. I've never given him marmite before.
Dont forget Question time too!
It's so weird this whole him not being in charge of his own food thing... Really crazy. But I like it!
mmm Marmite chicken...
By the way for those who were worried the other night the chicken actually tasted a lot better than it looked. However it was a bit... shall we say... scorched ;)
don't think i don't know what you two are saying about me behind my back.
i can tell you know. i have means.
Alex started it.
Do they have to go on the naughty step ?
Is Mr C allowed in charge of the naughty step?
Oi ;)
I thought he was on it?
You're talking in the third and first person at the same time! Amazing ;)
:D
Does that add up o the 4th person? ;)
BTW: for future refference the supermarket is a dangerous place... I bout too many treats, now i feel sick... :|
Aww. What did you have?
Thisnt going to sound good...or healthy
A pack of those fridge raiders... a couple of brownies, and about half a bag of red and black wine gums.
...Washed down with diet pineapple soda
LewHam The Hero (on this one topic, not sure about anything else, please don't hold me to anything, disclaimer over):
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76786
"I think if you want to do it in celebration of your win, you should be allowed to. It shouldn't be restricted."
Sounds good, he should get the whole GPDA to back it... and make it a real issiue
I also like this bit:
"Look back at years ago when Nigel stopped and picked Ayrton up, that was fantastic. That was awesome. Not that I want to stop and get on the side of someone else - but it could be fun!"
i'd go further and say it should just be allowed full stop.
weigh the cars without tyres, and stop all the silly "pick up rubber" nonsense at the same time.
Error: Your logical rule is not compatible with the FIA Formula 1 Rule Book
i do struggle with that one.
Perhaps add something random in to beat the system, at races on even numbered days, donuts are allowed, on odd numbered days they lead to an 8 race ban
Its confirmed that Geoff Willis is out at Red Bul according to James Allen.
There is also this bit on Bourdais...
"Meanwhile my Italian colleagues are telling me that Sunday will be the last Grand Prix for Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso. There have been persistent rumours that the Frenchman is on thin ice, but Bourdais denied them today,"
http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/
Hi
Does that mean Goldilocks gave up the third driver role for more than he admitted?
Just reading the TV conversation from earlier with interest.
Not yet - linear stations are dead but I'm convinced it'll move to an on-demand model similar to BT Vision (but which works better).
If it was about resolution, Betamax would have won. Things haven't changed.
Whoah! someone who thinks BT vision works!
I said "which works better" :-)
Interesting, I doubt that they will use the reserve driver even if Goldilocks had stayed, personally I do not see much advantage to replacing Bourdais unless you get a driver like Klien or Liuzzi. Experience really counts without testing.
True, maybe Sato could step up, didnt he get close earlier in the year?
Sato is rumoured to be driving an IndyCar on an oval later this year. Dodgems!
I heard that, but maybe an f1 drive could tempt him away...
The new owners of The Pirate Bay are trying just that.
Sato could not be worse than Seabass. Of course the STR has recently been the slowest car on the grid - so it could be the chance to try a young kid like Jaime Alguersuari.
I find turning the PC on just to watch a bit of telly to be a pain in the whatsit.
Evening all!!!
A funny anecdote for y'all
I put my Facebook status as "Jono Waldock hit his lactate threshold many many times today" and my friend commented on it "does this mean you ate a lot of chocolate..?"
hehehehehe
hmmm..... you know who else has experience... ;)
I still download everything - the b-word annoys me on the streaming.
That would bring cheer to the sidpodcast towers!
David Coulthard?
I was thinking a bit more musicaly
Ah, see, our computers are always on :)
This is gonna be a wierd question but...
has anyone got a picture of the live timing from a grand prix this year?
Villeneuve? ;-)
Na ah they would not go for another has-been after last year with DC!
I can't justify the cost when I'm not here half the time (work).
A pic of the results is uploaded to dropio after every session.
woo! fantastic :D
Knew i could count on you guys
Well we discussed this before but JV is a former world champion and would give red bull plenty of publicity in North America!
I think his time has really run out - I would rather see Scott Speed in the seat!
And he has said he wants to come back...
Its a family show, so i will just say he might find it a bit difficult to fit in the car...
Why not have former drivers get to drive one race, that way they get experience and there is someone new to keep an eye on each race? :D
(I'm aware it won't happen, because the the drivers won't get a chance to score many points)
Sure he wants to come back but both Jenson and Sato were faster. Hi best opportunity is USF1
Won't make a change from normal in Toro Rosso.
A seat in STR is not good if you are an experienced driver since it is so slow it does not help your reputation. I hope that they leave Seabass alone till the end of the season.
If JV can be consistently and dramaticly faster than tater, he will prove he still has it and drive up his value for next year...
That just confuses me though, at the start of the season it was the same as the Red Bull which did well in the first two races. As the season has gone on, there upgrades have come a couple of races later. If it isn't the car then it has the to be the engine but then Ferrari don't seem to be doing too badly.
They no longer have technical support from red bull which appears to have hampered them a lot, especially without a veteran driver to help them dial the car in
but he will be slower... so it won't help!
Why not though? surely it doesn't look good for the bosses at Red Bull to have 4 cars running, finish 1-2 and 19-20 (provided all cars finish). Mind you they are probably more focused on the 1-2 and forget they have a second team. If they want a team for young drivers, then GP2 or F2 would be a better place.
Yay! I can finally share what I've been making...
STR needs to become a full constructor by next year; they have to show to the possible buyers that they can do it by themselves (so far, not so good...)
Evening all.
Does JV have a confirmed drive then?? That's mental.....
*gulp*
;)
No nothing of the sort, infact the only thing official is that Bourdais believes he will be spending the rest of the season at STR...
I don't think so, it has been rumoured that Bourdais could be on his way out and JV has been saying he wants back in.
Basically, in the world fo football (boohissboo) there is a series of games called the Football Manager games were, well the name speaks for itself. Basically, I would LOVE to see an F1 game in such detail because the series is notorious for bringing in an immense amount of information, and making it a very realistic game where it does feel like you're in total control. What I've been working on is mockups of how an F1 Manager game would look like (or so I reckon, based on a lot of inspiration from the Football Manager series) so... check these out. This would be the concept behind my Formula 1 Manager game....
Driver Info screens - obviously with an f1 game as a manager you'd need to know about your drivers. The FM games give a load of detail with ratings out of 20 about the players, as is the case here with the drivers obviously. Plus as a manager you could hrie new drivers, fire, scout around the world in feeder and lower sports, etc... the screenshots are self explanatory on the sidebar menus and whatnot. You could also have the same template for your staff as well, from engineers to the guys back at your factories, hiring and firing based on their stats and reputations and whatnot, a fully fledged team owner.
News screens - This would be where you'd find out all your information via news updates, with the top scrollbar of headlines feeding you the latest news and then the indepth stuff on the lower bit. It's always been a part of the FM games and it'd be immensely useful obviously with this. Plus you could always cause your own media mischief by sending out your own news updates as a team boss, make comments about your drivers or other drivers. And walk out of FOTA meetings. :P
Race View via live timing - Obviously this is the live timing version of watching the race. Other ideas would be to view it via a circuit map with dots going around in live time, and text updates as can be seen at the bottom of this under the live timing but as a whole screen of updates obviously. The sidebar shows live championship standings and whatnot, your two drivers stategies, comments from the radio, etc, everything you need to know from them and again, it all should be self explanatory.
Of course these three bits of screenshots mockups I have made would just be 3 different areas rather than the whole thing - if were making it, there'd be allsorts like gettin driver reports in youth programs, testing days, everything basically that you see on the sidebars of these mockups and at the top title bar underneath the main header that links to various other areas within the game. You can probably guess how much I'd like to see this happen based on how much time I've wasted putting all this together and hopefully it all makes sense as to everything I've made...
Sorry if this is a mega long comment....
Oh okay. That doesn't seem that likely to me. I think he might be replaced next season but I reckon he'll hold on until then
Intresting, I pre-ordered the Blu-ray version of the current Torchwood series and according to Amazon it's been dispatched :D Although I doubt it will arrive tommorow.
Lukeh that is awesome! :D
I think I love you.
Oh btw, the Race view is the Driver Info one.
Yup Lukeh, that is awesome
Last thing I pre-ordered came days before the release date
This is the actual last link for in race.... trust me to mess something up :)
#sorryamy
hehehehe
That looks awesome lukeh, i think a grand prix manager game used to exist, but it must be about 9 years old now...
It is, but haven't we had that that already with games like BATracer and GP Manager 2?
I was playing it earlier today and it pretty much got me in the spirit to start 'shoppin a more modern version.
You have WAAAY too much time on your hands - and you are also right!!
Did you ever play Grand Prix World? It was a good stab at it but had many problems.
Last GPM2 was based on the 1996 season. There are some corcking updates coming up for it though.
No, BATracer is completley different and GPM2 is ooooold.
oh by the way Lukeh, I figured we can't let this just disappear after your hard work :D http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/F1+Manager
yay! :)
So my neighbour is a car importer and drives a metallic blue 67 Mustang, but look what's in his driveway today...
Mock The Week is on in 2mins.
It is? I didn't know that. but so is Torchwood so I know what I will be watching :D
Woo for Sky+/iPlayer
BBC2. Will iPlayer TW some other time, missed it all week
Nice... I dont like the colour though
Bananacar!
Hideous
Was it Lukeh that was the Danny Wallace fan? There's some kind of limited edition podcast on the Beeb.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/dannyw
Ooohhh thanks! :D
Was supposed to meet him this week but couldn't go. Boo.
Wasn't he the guy who did the Micronation Country one thingy?
Yup.
Yup, the country of Lovely. And he wrote Yes Man
He is awesome as well, I loved that.
MY STUDENT LOANS BEEN APPROVED :D :D :D
Congratulations!
(Now make sure when you graduate you get a decent job to pay off the thing!)
congratulations!
I'm doing teacher training....
Now prepare to use it on *cough* educational purposes
:P
Woooop
You could do what I did. Move to a country where the cost of living is higher, wait until the exchange rate is really good and then get a bank loan to pay off your student loan!
Franck news
According to the old fashioned paper Autosport peugeot have decided not to got to the Portimao race at th end of this month.
wohoo! i'm home reasonably early from a show! god that was dull. on with the photo editing :D
did it go alright after?
Oh, rubbish!! :(
Actually, I can't avoid to feel a bit weird about paying for education. I know that in many places it is the norm; but living in a country where you can go from kindergarten to University without having to pay anything for it, it just feels weird...
yep. no thanks to the stupid tech teacher who does is 'in charge'. what kinda of a techie doesn't make sure there are spare batteries, that the stage doors aren't locked and that the microphones work?! i mean checking everything is the first thing i do when i get in. so silly. luckily i was just helping out some of the younger techies today and not doing it all on my own...that's tomorrow night :D
ahh well, least you ahve lots of lovely photo editing to look forward to for the rest of the evening :)
The reason they gave is that they think they would be better spending the same budget going to the Petit Le Mans instead. So instead of 1000km you get a full 10 hours of Franck with two healthy legs. So long as they take him
When is that?
But the interest rate on a bank loan is FAR worse than the student loan..
They are doing Petit Le Mans instead.
Autosport has a brilliant write-up of Goodwood by Marcus Pye.
23-26th September
Hmm, not too long, I suppose.
At least you know his leg will be working by then.
Not quite ... you have to take into account the following:
(1) The exchange rate fell by 25% when I did this
(2) I was paying about 10% in transaction fees every quarter (because that's how I was paying it)
Plus the fact it took 6 weeks and numerous phone calls every time I transferred money....
Well under those circumstances it would work :-)
Just catching with the Tour. They just showed one of the teams hiring BrawnGP's wind tunnel to test the aero for the time trial bike.
I think it was Team Colombia HTC, which coincidentally or not is using Brawn-like colours
Torchwood has been such a cracking watch this week. Have never been 100% won over by it but this weeks viewing = simply wonderful stuff.
Agreed, if you have never watched it please do.
Actually glad I decided to Sky Plus Mock the Week. It was damn good.
I'm missing out on my tour action. I can't get the itv player to work so I can watch the highlights or anything. I'm just stuck with my rubbish podcast where the voices are all too quiet to hear properly.....
I didn't like the idea of 5 one hour episodes in one week but it works.
Same here. Definitely made the right choice.
Have you got a DVR machine? I was on the website for the first few before I remembered to record it.
John Barrowman wasn't so keen on them, but I think this has been awesome and emotional. It would have never worked as a 13 part weekly series. RTD made the right call.
I'm planning to watch via iPlayer over the weekend.
Haha no. I don't have a tv.....
Remember the tissues.
They need a red button option where you can watch it without the audio from frankie boyle's microphone
Agree with that. He was funny in the first few series and still has his moments, yet most of the time he's just trying to be 'shocking' and is just crass.
I love Frankie Boyle although I haven't seen tonight's episode yet so can't comment on it
Anyone know why Geoff Willis has left Red Bull?
Not another one!
I keep forgetting I can FF the ads.
I liked him at first, but he seems to have run out of ideas and just trys to say something outrageous all the time. Its just getting cringe worthy...
Did you see his unpublished Daiily Record column? He's parted company with the paper because they wouldn't print his Michael Jackson jokes. I thought he had been quite restrained.
Caught him drinking a rival unnamed brand energy drink i reckon.
I don't even have a permanent house.... I'm splitting my time (and my stuff!!) between friends' and hotels
Hell? .. says he was made redundant .. can't see that as a real reason
Nah, I was taking the GMM approach with that :P
Seems odd as he hasn't been there long. Maybe Dank would know
I couldn't see anything in that, that could be interpreted as being more extreme than his normal fodder.
Apparently he wasnt enjoying working with Newey.
That also seems odd as they had worked together for many years so he'd have known what to expect
Speculation is he will join Ferrari - he speaks Italian and his wife is Italian. I wonder if he will not return to Brawn (was with them when it was Honda) to replace Jorg Zander.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76802
FOTA are confusing me now. The breakaway is back on but they are close to a Concorde Agreement with Bernie.
Make a straightforward statement guys and all say the same thing.
They worked together well before that is why he was hired
i'm just checking the news for the first time today - nice to know nothing has changed....from four weeks ago.
An agreement with cvc and the teams without the fia means they can breakaway with the existing championship and leave max alone
oh my... the bbc five live f1 people possibly have one of the best jobs ever...

Following Alonso's comments earlier Kimi says he is staying at Ferrari next year.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76796
That is what I said they would do in the first place but now I am not convinced.
According to Autosport (the paper one) Ari Vatanen was going to announce his candidacy today but I haven't seen anything yet.
I'm sorry but every time I see a photo of Kimi in that hat I want to sing "where did you get that hat, where did you get that hat"
I don't think Ferrari have decided what to do yet. Either way Alonso will probably end up there at some point.
I think we should have a new game. What does Kimi keep under his hat?
Vodka?
Kimi and Massa both have contracts for next year and it would cost them $40 million to get rid of Kimi.
an elephant?
italian press are reporting alonso comment as "I haven't had contact with Ferrari". I'm assuming that's the same story as in english presses
Magnum?
ice cream
Emergency supply of vodka
ouch!
My latest sidepodsong curtesy of "Pitmonster" who jigged the lyrics :D
Linky
His Personality
sixteen magnums (the hats big enough :D )
Mini bottle of Finlanda Vodka. And a cheeky smile.
Yes sutosport.com had a thing from Alonso earlier sayin he was sick of the rumours that have been doing the rounds for 4 or 5 years and he has had no contact with Ferrari.
I think he keeps his sense of humour under his hat.
A selection of expressions.
Not so bad. Work are paying for the hotel and at least I don't have to clean up after myself
I like that. I have a feeling that will make a show at the weekend.
Roll on the weekend, I'm really tired
That sounds like a fine plan.
thanks for the conformation. saves me translating for everyone ;)
french tv showing jackson'S moonwalker movie. and I'm too tired to be interested...will be nice to get back to racing this weekend.
totally.
With a hat that big I think he could keep Magnum P.I. under it! :)
one of the strangest films I've ever had the... pleasure? to watch
as long as he grows a moustache...
Lucky black cat?
yeahbed time calls. it look odd enough to watch but think i can live without it. nap time for me. see you all for qualy - hopefully. bon nuit.
What evening show is planned for Sunday?
Goon night, sleep well
Bye Mr. Scott in Italy in France.
Debrief as always?
oh dear I am tired
Buone notte.
That reminds me, a customer on the phone today called me Mr O2 Man :D
I will always remember the review for the book Moonwalk "Lavishy illustrated with over 80 black and white photos. Black before Thriller, white after."
:D
How cool of a superhero name is that, Mr O2 Man. What would your special power be?
Saving the world...from liquid damaged handsets.
Best two #f1happyplaces yet:
http://twitter.com/alexandronov/statuses/2557589455
http://twitter.com/taylorandy/statuses/2557599522
:D "...but it's never been anywhere near water..."
I (Heart) Andy
One guy who was recently let go at work had a customer who's handset was liquid damaged. He was a Norfolk guy and apparently he said in the thickest Norfolk accent ever "I ain't dropped my fuun in no pond, I 'aven't"
oh wow. last night i uploaded a few (very short) videos to youtube and now someone has commented to identify himself as the rider of the unknown bike...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj5is_NgyTw
But in all seriousness, I can explain how liquid damage
*could get boring, save yourself and stop reading here*
Liquid damage doesn't necessarily mean you've dropped the phone in the sink or bath or in a puddle or something to that extent. It can occur by means of simple usage in the rain, with wet hands, in a room that tends to have a lot of moisture in it i.e. kitchen or bathroom, or by spilling a few drops of liquid onto the phone by accident. Some customers complain that it's not very good that the manufacturers can't make a handset that can withstand such things, but then again they don't advertise them as waterproof in the first place!
Basically, if your handset gets liquid damaged, it's finished. It causes corrosion on the metal parts of the phone and it's simply unrepairable. You can have every single part on the phone replaced and it will still come back because it's corrosion. It is essentially the mobile phone equivalent of a terminal illness.
Utter Utter Utter rubbish.
Like total rubbish.
My phone has been down the toilet, and in a lake. AND it still works.
Granted, not as well as it used too, but it still does the functions it needs to.
You need to get yourself a Nokia m'lad
You must be one of the lucky ones then.
With the amounts I've seen come in on a daily basis? Heck no! I swear I had about 20 Fault Found handsets today and at least half were Nokia's.
Also, Sony Ericsson's software is rubbish too. And I should know, I had to put up with my W890i resetting itself every now and again.
To be fair, while I agree with Scott that any water/moisture getting into an electrical device like a mobile or computer is *not* good, I have dropped my mobile in the sea before, fished around for a couple of minutes, retrieved it, and it still works perfectly fine. Maybe luck was on my side.
It might work now, but could fail at any time in the future. It will almost certainly not be covered by any manufacturer's warranty as they all now put liquid sensors inside the phones that irreversibly change colour when made wet.
So it has suffered damage, it's only a matter of time then...
It's an old hand set, back in the day when they built phones to last, and you can tell; everytime i try and buy one off ebay (for when i go one lake too far) and they go for alot of money
It's been like this for years, most new phones wouldnt last as long as this one has.
It's way past its warranty, it's probably 5/6 years old now
I think someone posted this here before, but if you wipe off the network-ware the phones improve no end.
The add ons are completely pointless, and often destabilise the phones massively
(said only to be humorous) To further the stereotype, we should have a test you have to pass before you can buy one of our phones :P
"Do you like cogs?"
I aspire to cog ownership, yes.
that would've been ace if the camera was filming at the time!
I dropped a Nokia in a puddle during my lunch break a few years ago and didn't notice till 5pm. I went to where I had parked my car at lunch and found the phone under 3 inches of water. Tooke it apart and let it dry and it was fine. Never had a problem with it.
Airing cupboards do wonders for phones
It won't change the liquid sensor colour back though.
What is that?
The thing is, my phone was quote/unquote "free". If I owned a phone that had any value, be it personal or monetary, I would of course insure it and take care of it. My MacBook Pro is well taken care of and insured because I use it outside of my home while at work. Because I paid about £1500 for it, I damn well take care of it.
My mobile? That's a disposable device. So what it fell in the water. If it hadn't worked when I fished it out, I would have simply shrugged my shoulders and moved on. And probably paid for the cheapest possible replacement.
Who gets attached to mobiles these days?
umm..that would be me 8-)
Not really, I was paddling out at the time. I wasn't doing anything spectacular at the time. Not that I do anyway. :)
Like this?

i could get very attached to an iphone.
that's pretty cool. now i really want one.
oh its an apple thing.
Apple fanboys
No. I dropped mine in the sea. I forgot my phone was still in my 'short's pocket and I heard a knock on my board as I was paddling. The kerfuffle involved was humorous though.
I ♥ my iPhone. One of the best decisions I made to get one, technology-wise.
i would've looked great though.
*it.
Apple iPhone, I presume. :)
Quelle surprise
What, my body and board slowly getting smaller and darker. Maybe.
s'what i did when i jumped in to get my boat back
hehe. that wasn't quite what i meant :)
nope, i assumed it was a generic mobile thing.
i dont need a sensor to tell me when i drop my phone in water, the fizzing noise tells me that
You could get attached to a chair though
No, all the manufacturers do the same.
:D ;) :P
i forget these things. sadly no-one else seems to.
Maybe we need a wiki page about how to forget things
and another one for other people to 'remember' them
nooooo, no, no, no.
It’s an old hand set, back in the day when they built phones to last, and you can tell;
I had to take my phone to a local phone shop a couple of months ago to see if they could get it working again. When I told them my SIM card was five years old the man on the counter was astonished. He reckoned they were only supposed to work for 18 months.
(It turned out the SIM card simply needed removing and putting back in the phone to get rid of static. Something tells me it will probably work for at least another five years as long as I don't jinx it... ...oops!)
you wanna write to the manufacturer. they'd love a story like that.
My mobile? That’s a disposable device. So what it fell in the water. If it hadn’t worked when I fished it out, I would have simply shrugged my shoulders and moved on. And probably paid for the cheapest possible replacement.
Who gets attached to mobiles these days? {Comment #880}
Me. I very much liked my little basic Nokia phone (that was so basic it didn't even have working internet access) and only replaced it because I got a PDA as a present. Now I'm even more attached to my PDA - even if I can't get insurance for it because it's second-hand (the first owner only had it for a few weeks, but the insurers don't care about that).
I would have thought it would be more likely that wiping the sim card out and in would clean the contact and give you a better connection rather than get rid of static.
Snap. The things they tell you in phone shops eh?
you wanna write to the manufacturer. they’d love a story like that {Comment #907}
You mean the manufacturer of the SIM? I didn't see the point - especially since they make money off selling new ones to the public (the manufacturer that is).
They didn't make money off new SIM cards in the days when I got mine, which may explain why mine still works...
no, nokia. you have had a mobile phone for more than 5 years and you're not letting it go.
I would have thought it would be more likely that wiping the sim card out and in would clean the contact and give you a better connection rather than get rid of static. {Comment #909}
It is entirely possible, given the "18 months" comment, that the shop assistant might not have known quite what he was talking about ;)
SIM cards have almost zero value. The services that they enable access to are worth a lot more to the network providers.
Since today has been sidepodscience day I just found something recommended on an old net @ night. How to make chemistry and the periodic table fun while at the same thing showing you the range of people involved in teaching chemistry from mad scientist to old professors with insane hair. So far I have only seen the sodium vid. May as well start with a bang.
I would love to know how big the guys dog is.

By then the SIM had been transferred from the Nokia to my PDA in order to keep the number. Telling Nokia that my phone has lived in a drawer in case of emergency since the PDA arrived may take a little of the shine off my story.
For proper dedication to one phone, I have a friend who got a phone (I believe it was a very early Nokia) in 2000 and only got rid of it when it irretrievably broke in the middle of last year. She was quite upset about it because it was an easy phone to use and didn't do anything except phone and text people...
Periodic Videos is a great site.
oh.
I have only just heard of it. Any element you would particularly recommend? I can't wait to see what these nutters do with uranium
argh. my keyboard keeps displaying symptoms of batteries dying. change of batteries not helping.
SIM and number are linked by the phone company's system. It is very easy to get your number assigned to a new SIM. Even when changing network providers.
Simple answer to that - Nokia 1100 series. Phone calls, texts and an LED torch.
My perfect MOBILE PHONE. Cameras, 'net access, multi-tasking devices... what a load of rubbish. As if devices that are about 50% useful as the individually designed-for devices would ever catch on.
Yes, I still live in the late '90s.
I'd like to say a phone & text only phone would be ideal for me... except I'd miss the camera for updating Twitter... and I'd miss the bluetooth in my car..
tbh though I don't use any more than that
Well, they get a big block of it, hit it with another big block and film the results from a safe distance (about 50 miles).
Actually, they don't. I think they show some metallic Uranium and talk about its properties and useage.
ooooh. i am so going to remind you of this comment one day.
;)
for me a phone and text messaging is of no interest.
however, a mobile browser with 3g connection would be heaven. that's what i really want from o2, a data only package for the iphone.
Blur rule. :P
(Oh no, that was mid-'90s. Well, close enough...)
Well I saw them precisely one week ago and can confirm they still do :-)
hehe. you know you can blog and moderate wordpress comments from the iphone right?
O2 are good with the iPhone packages. Mine gives me unlimited data AND WiFi.
true. but i don't want/need calls or sms. i'd rather have more data, or unlimited data for less money.
I think this is one of those things I won't need until I try it.
The closest you can get is the £30 per month contract.
but when you do, you'll be hooked? christine's g1 is fantastic, we'd be lost without it.
Yeah, can do it (and have done it) from my Sony Ericsson Piece Of S***. Have done for the past 2 years. I just choose not to. Sure it's prolly easier from an iPhone or Google whatdoyercallit, but I simply choose not to. I like the ability to turn myself off every once in a while. The pleasure is all mine, and in this day and age, I take a great deal of satisfaction from that. :)
fair point.
no idea.. just can't think of anything i'd use it for, day to day. it would come in handy at events like Goodwood, but that's only once or twice a year
Buy a pay as you go iphone, and one of those usb dongles.
open up the dongle and take out the sim and put it in the iphone?
would that work?
sorry there was meant to be a quote in there, that's a reply to this:
I haven't tried it, but i don't see why not
I suspect it might also allow you to run skype over 3g as well...
isn't the iphone locked to o2 though?
also, we have a 3g dongle, but i'm not sure you can just put the sim into any phone?
Yeah, you would probably need an O2 dongle...
But if the dongle lets you run skype when plugged into a pc, shouldn't the sim let you run it on the iphone as well?
beats me. sounds interesting though, am googling to find out.
I should probably put on a disclaimer that i have no idea if this works, is legal or if it will destroy everything!
Bernie got a mention on Mock the Week.
All mobile devices use two things to identify themselves on the network:
The device has a unique number - the IMEI
The SIM in the device has another unique number - the IMSI
The make and model of the device can be obtained from the IMEI, so it would be possible to detect that a particular device is using a SIM for the 'wrong" service.
Your Sony Ericsson Piece Of S*** does not happen to be a P990i? The only consolation for me was that I did not pay for it - it was project money for developing mobile blogging.
