If there was a drought of Formula 1 news before, then the flood gates have well and truly opened today. Autosport International kicked off for the press, and we've heard from a few paddock people already. It's not just limited to Birmingham, though, there's news coming in from all over the world.

  • Dave Richards is apparently not buying Honda now, having hinted that the cost-cutting improvements won't begin to show until 2010, and he's not interested in Formula 1 when it is this expensive. Nick Fry says there are still plenty of people in the running - 12 in fact. Where did they all come from, and who are they?
  • Motorsport Aragon - a new track in Spain - is hoping to get on the F1 testing roster. It seems as though there will be more test tracks than racing events soon. The question is, with two Spanish races on the calendar, and Valencia a very poor one, is Aragon hoping to be a replacement?
  • Pedro de la Rosa, known as Pedalo round these parts, believes he's still got a chance at an F1 drive. He's fallen into the testing trap at McLaren, but holds out hope (and is sure that) one day he will return to the grid. Really, Pedalo? Really?

As ever, I'll end today's Daily post with a request. Please vote for us in the 2008 Weblog Awards. We're up for two categories, so that's just two clicks, and then I'll let you get on with your day.

    :-D

(oh and I better talk about something F1-related...)

Surely Pedlo has to accept the fact now that his time as an F1 race driver has come and gone? Give it up man, and let someone like di Resta have a go.

110% agreement from me. he's too tall for kers anyway.

There’s a woman playing darts on BBC2 by the name of ‘Krappen’

    She is Dutch, and losing.

BTW what happens if a player ends up on a score of 1 in a professional match?

  • Dank09/01/2009 at 00:23

he’s too tall for kers anyway.

I read that as 'he's too tall for cars anyway' which is probably true as well.

can you text croftie questions during a darts match?

    how?

Get the presenter to pick a card, do a number trick that the listener can join in with, pretty much any mind reading trick.

For example: select two numbers, each of which is less than 10.

Choose either of the numbers and multiply it by 5.

    Add 7 to this result.

Multiply the resulting sum by 2.

Add it to the other number that was first selected.

Post the result and I'll tell you the numbers you chose.

  • me09/01/2009 at 00:40

reverse the digits of the result and add to it.

    web hosting

this site has been down almost as often as it's been up recently, and it's driving us nuts. in order to try and help the problem, the hosting company are taking sidepodcast.com offline intentionally from 5am this morning, for two whole hours.

clearly that's crazy talk, which is why we're doing our utmost to move the site somewhere else as quickly as possible. we got burned back in november trying to rush things, so in order to test things properly first we've created:

    http://www2.sidepodcast.com/

that domain (with a www2) uses a different hosting company, and will hopefully be more reliable. however, we've not used them before so we're not promising anything.

if you're bored by all means pop along, look around. feel free to leave comments (although they will be deleted at some point), and test the following:

    http://www2.sidepodcast.com/ria/ajax/

    http://www2.sidepodcast.com/realtime/

with any luck all will go well and soon we'll be shot of the dodgy hosting company.

    appreciate your patience all :)

    what??

It reminds me of the last manager my local football club had. The team was in th middle of the top league and this guy was signed because they had not progressed for a while. After a reasonable first season he got us relegated for the first time in the club's history the second season then had us well on the way to being relgated again the next season when he quit with the announcement that he had taken the club as far as he could. It looks like Nick Fry hasn't reached the point where he thinks he has taken Honda as far as he can yet.

The trouble is he has already put off a lot of serious bidders. I know Honda are incompetent but how can you have someone who has his own bid in be the person who deals with other bids. That is a conflict of interest the like of which Max would be impressed with.

It's pretty common, and known as a management buyout. Tony Purnell and David Pitchforth tried it in the early autumn of 2004 with Jaguar, but the plan fell through when Ford unilaterally announced it was rejecting F1 completely.

However, in this instance I do not think a management buyout would be in the best interests of ex-Honda even if it was financially possible. They might as well sell it straight to Vijay Mallya, because surely if ex-Honda continues as it currently is they'll be asset-stripping it in a year or two anyway to salvage any residual value from it.

  • Steven Roy09/01/2009 at 11:25

My objection is not to the management buyout but the fact the the guy heading the MBO is the guy dealing with the other bidders. Although this is the first we have heard of Fry heading a bid it was already known that Ross Brawn was trying to put a bid together. It cannot be in the best interests of Honda or the team to have Fry scuppering potentially good bids to aid his own.

Good point. Having two distinct management buyouts going on is just plain wierd. No wonder they're struggling to get a buyer.

  • Steven Roy09/01/2009 at 11:27

Another manufacturer pulling out of motorsport - Kawasaki has pulled out of MotoGP.

That has been in the public domain for the last week. Kawasaki have never achieved anything other than having the most distinctive looking bikes on the grid. They have never even threatened to win a championship. The trouble is though Moto GP is entirely dependent on manufacturers and if others follow suit the whole thing could collapse in no time flat.

As the article says it is quite common for teams to fail crash tests. The odd thing is that they are allowed to test the car without passing a crash test. I get the impression that teams now use the first crash test as a way of gauging where the limit is and they aim slightly under and expect to fail the first test.

building work at donington started yesterday:

Why is Bernie doing inspections? Surely that is an FIA function.

Gillett clearly doesn't understand the difference between motor sport and ball games. People may use public transport to go to Wembley or Twickenham but they only go to those place for 2 hours at a time which gives them a lot of time to deal with public transport.

The trouble is he has already put off a lot of serious bidders. I know Honda are incompetent but how can you have someone who has his own bid in be the person who deals with other bids. That is a conflict of interest the like of which Max would be impressed with.

Makes me wonder what Brawn thinks of it all.

    http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24889582-39478,00.html

"This is real. Absolutely. He is pretty keen to do it," Morris said yesterday.

"It would be the full season. Not just one race. If we can make a bit of a buzz about it then I think it can definitely happen.

"We would have to write about $2 million in sponsorship so we could run the car and pay him to drive."

  • Scott09/01/2009 at 17:34

It reminds me of the last manager my local football club had. The team was in th middle of the top league and this guy was signed because they had not progressed for a while. After a reasonable first season he got us relegated for the first time in the club’s history the second season then had us well on the way to being relgated again the next season when he quit with the announcement that he had taken the club as far as he could. It looks like Nick Fry hasn’t reached the point where he thinks he has taken Honda as far as he can yet.

Nice analogy. I really hope for the team's sake that, if it is present on the grid next year, Fry has no involvement.

If there is even a little bit of substance to these reports that he's trying to manipulate the bidding process for his own gain, then surely it's time for Honda to pay him what he's owed and wave goodbye? This is a man who's taken a racing-winning team to the back of the grid in the matter of only a few seasons, not to mentioned introduced concepts as disastrous as Earth Dreams.

  • Papa Smurf09/01/2009 at 17:34

woah woah woah… Jacques Villeneuve is doing V8?

It'd be great if these rumours are true, although if he is to have a serious attempt at the series, he'd really need to move to Australia (as Max Wilson was prepared to).

Not impossible, though. Maybe Dannii Minogue left him with a good impression of Australia?

  • me09/01/2009 at 17:43

Willi Weber is a pretty good judge of who to support for an F1 seat...

The only thing against him is the fact that Germany don't need another driver for marketing purposes as they have Mr Vettel....

Di Grassi has been around the block too long with three seasons in GP2... and Renault prefer Piquet....which says a lot about di Grassi....

OK. As I don't have too much TV coverage of anything outside F1 and IRL in open wheel (and not a good one in any case), I'm more biased towards other forms of motorsport in my non-f1 drivers preferences (Sainz and Rossi are in my podium, for sure...)

apparently he’s moving next door to the factory or something. maybe in 2010 though

But "me" you are forgetting he's... Swiss....

  • me09/01/2009 at 21:06

will the swiss hate him for moving to italy ;)

I guess not... I mean at least he'd be moving closer to work... not further away....

    ouch :D

Yeah, but they are still cute. Dontcha just want to hug one?

i'll admit, baby penguins are really cute but baby pandas are slightly cuter. :D

  • Lady Snowcat09/01/2009 at 21:18

    ouch

Do you think Gordon tapped up Lewis for a loan at the Autosport awards?....

Just the small contribution we'd all have to make of course... if we had his dosh....

    As the article says it is quite common for teams to fail crash tests. {Steven Roy}

This is true. Even the (slightly less usual) bit about a chassis being written off isn't that much of a problem for Renault. If it was ex-Honda, Williams or Force India, I might have worried that producing a new chassis would have been too much of a distraction for their competitiveness to be unaffected, but Renault have easily enough staff to be fine.

What is the point of registering a domain name just for that? Not that I doubted the answer, but it does seem a bit pointless...

  • Alianora La Canta09/01/2009 at 21:41

    Why is Bernie doing inspections? Surely that is an FIA function. {Steven Roy}

It is (Appendix O of the International Sporting Code explains at length), but if the inspection is already booked, then there's a good chance Bernie knows about it, since he seems to consider himself personally responsible for all circuit contracts. He could turn up for the inspection himself, but he can't overrule the FIA inspectors.

Street races around Zurich for 2011?

  • Alianora La Canta09/01/2009 at 22:26

I think it was aimed more at getting certain non-Swiss F1 drivers to pay more taxes than getting competitive racing going there, sadly.

Ollie’s Swiss-Buemi-related fact of the day: Buemi is, assuming my counting is right, the 22nd Swiss to race in F1. The others were either just test drivers or didn't manage to qualify.

It stands out better than the blue 'g'. I wonder if Google bowed to the general reaction to that version or just wanted to change it again?

Oh, and another (slightly) off topic point... The tagline to Sidepodcast is "Your Weekly F1 Podcast". Can't you or the community of wonderful people here do any better than that? I certainly don't mean to belittle your efforts (especially as I don't really have one myself), but during the season Sidepodcast is much more than just a weekly show. It's an extravaganza of live video, phone-ins, quizzes, panels and of course, all the shows you produce plus live comments etc...

Maybe a contest to get people to think of more appropriate taglines would be good? The header one seemed to go down well, after all. As ever, just my meandering thoughts. :)
