Is it too early in the year to start moaning that it's going to fast? 7 whole days of 2009 have passed already, and we're heading swiftly into the 8th. For those wishing the season to hurry up and get here fast, I think it might just do that. Anyway, here are some topics that have hit the news today:

  • It looks like Singapore are going to reprofile some of the track to encourage overtaking. The 2008 night race was a success, but perhaps only because of the safety car. Therefore, organisers are in contact with both the FIA and teams to discuss potential revisions for this years race. They want to smooth out the bumps, which personally, I think would be a travesty.
  • Also, it seems as though Mark Blundell will be going solo, now that Martin Brundle has a high flying job at the BBC. Actually, it seems as though Mr Brundle wants to concentrate on his own son's career and has stepped back from the management company that he and Mark ran together. Now it's all Blundells responsibility, and we're trying to come up with a new name for him. It can't be 2MB anymore, can it?
  • Finally, it seems as though Bernie is just as doubtful about Donington Park as everyone else, although he's willing to give them until September to get things sorted out. He says there are five other venues he can replace them with - presumably he doesn't mean in Britain though?

Y'know, I completely forgot that Autosport International actually begins today. Wonder if anything interesting will filter out of it? It's not usually a hot-bed for news is it?

Well, not necessarily. Can't Brands Hatch host F1 on the fly? But yeah, let's assume that.

    Five venues could be...

    1. Russia?

    2. Korea?

    3. Poland?

    4. Mexico?

    5. US/Canada?

Brands Hatch would never get planning permission, I like your list although I don't think the North Americas will get a race again for a while yet.

    Must.Go.To.Bed. Night/morning all.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/01/2009 at 00:43

Hmm, we're looking very off colour at Milwaukee at the moment in RLB IndyCar. Crashed in practice, qualified 15th, and now crashed in warmup.

  • Dank08/01/2009 at 00:43

Controversial: Brands Hatch is rubbish anyway :-D

I'd sooner see racing on this track instead.

    1) neverland

    3) middle earth

    4) atlantis

    5) brigadoon

  • Journeyer08/01/2009 at 00:48

Brands Hatch would never get planning permission, I like your list although I don’t think the North Americas will get a race again for a while yet.

Well, the manufacturers are pressing Bernie to return to North America, and losing Silverstone would be a nice way for Bernie to bow to their pressure without being humiliated, since he'd just say they came back on as a back-up, and not as the 'original' plan, so to speak.

Also, for Mexico, there were plans before for Tilke to design a figure-of-eight track in Acapulco (which is a LOVELY beach town - think Miami, but with hotter girls). They said that the plans were finished, but construction never got underway. Perhaps that might get restarted if Bernie asked them to?

    If it reads:

    Croft

    Brands Hatch

    Oulton Park

    Snetterton

I'll be very amused - and very surprised.

my guess is that it's a bbc thing.

itv were happy for that to carry on - blundell's association with hilton hotel group, which happened to offer itv competition prizes as well as sponsor mclaren.

wouldn't be surprised if the beeb haven't put a stop to all of that.

hard to read if you ask me. i could never work out if he wanted to keep bourdais for another year or not. did he or didn't he want buemi and did that affect his decision to sell? i can't figure it out.

To help pass the day away at work today I listened to 'Dark Side of the Moon' and the song 'Money' starts to play and I'm listening to it and it dawns on me that Bernie must be basing part of his life on this song just listen to these lyrics: 1) Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash 2) Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie 3) Think I'll buy me a football team Do you think he has a Lear Jet, no I think a man with that size of ego probably has an Airbus 380. thats just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Maybe what happened Dieiter was not happy with Bourdais and was pushing for Berger to get rid of him and hire Buemi but Berger a true racer saw potential with Bourdais and refused and when push comes to shove Berger lost out.

  • me08/01/2009 at 03:06

you've just given me an idea aitch.

bourdais is managed by nicolas todt. brawn is after some ferrari engines. no idea have much influence jean todt has in marnello any more, but let's speculate drivers for ex-honda in 2009 are:

    - jenson button

    - seb bourdais

running ferrari engines while ferrari get honda's kers in return.

    everybody wins.

  • Bassano Clapper08/01/2009 at 03:07

So if Brundle leaves 2MB will it be re-christened 512kb?

  • me08/01/2009 at 03:08

    everybody wins.

ferrari also take the honda pit light system, developed by brawn so it works properly and nobody gets hurt.

    it's a winner, right? c'mon.

I still think that relationship was soo instrumental in Massa joining Ferrari. Good job Rob Smedly seems to be an engineer/driver relationship genius

  • me08/01/2009 at 03:13

    :D

that's simply brilliant! and now i'm super annoyed i couldn't see it for myself.

  • F1Wolf08/01/2009 at 03:20

the BUTT - BOUR line up is interesting theory but I think that besides engine supply the team will need other backers too and those may also influence the selection of drivers

there was a talk about Petrobras jumping ship from Williams to Honda (while Honda was still Honda), that perhaps was what made them test the Brazilians di Grassi and Senna. But since the Honda pulled out all the sponsor talk ended. we shall wait and see ...

But I think it is safe to assume that at least one of the ex-Honda seats in 2009 will be sort of paid drive seat, whether in return for engines or cash

Whom do we actually want to take over the team ?

  • me08/01/2009 at 03:22

With 77 days until the first Friday practice do you think there really is enough time to get the team up and running and if they do get it going how competitive can they be especially after missing some testing already. Wouldn't it be better for the new owners to pass on this season get all their ducks in a row and come out blazing next year, oops that might be a poor choice in words.

  • Journeyer08/01/2009 at 05:41

One thing's for sure: Honda ended their latest F1 stint in an [engine] blaze of glory! :P

  • Ray08/01/2009 at 08:32

I am wondering if deep down Bernie has a feeling that Donnington might not be granted permission to upgrade the circuit. Then it will give him the perfect excuse to not have a British Grand Prix and put a new venue on the F1 calendar. Somewhere like Russia or another Arab country where he can make much more money than having a GP in Britain. I think if Donnington dosen’t hold the BGP it will be a travesty that an F1 GP will not be held in Britain. I have never been to Donnington but i know a couple of people who have and they said it is a nightmare place. So it seems even if Donnington is granted permission today, they will have a lot of work to do to get the circuit updated for the 2010 BGP

Ray - Actually, that's what many of us are thinking. As I mentioned earlier, Russia is a prime candidate to replace Britain.

It's very devious - very Bernie, in fact.

  • Ian Lockwood08/01/2009 at 09:30

Surely Silvertsone would at least be one of the 5 potential Donnington stand-ins on Bernies list?

I think that deep down, Bernie knows that F1 needs a British Grand Prix. It is home to so many of the teams, and European or Worlwide Headquarters to many of the sponsors.

Letter from Max to Luca ahead of todays FOTA meeting in Heathrow...

    http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=36801

    Plenty to discuss in there!

    1) Lots more cost cutting to come. I love Max's statement that having invested in a new facility is not an arguement for retaining it.....I think the manufacturers board of directors & shareholders would beg to differ!

    2) The FIA having introduced KERS against the wishes of many teams, now seems to want to ban at least battery versions, which I believe some teams will be using this season (& will have spent a lot of money developing).

    3) Seems Cosworth are still very much in the frame to supply some teams in 2010

    4) FIA still keen on standardised Chassis parts & gearboxes.

  • Journeyer08/01/2009 at 10:02

    3) Seems Cosworth are still very much in the frame to supply some teams in 2010

Max sneaked something in here: he previously said this would only push through if FOUR teams said yes. He now says:

Cosworth will be able to supply competitive engines for 2010... provided they have firm orders to supply at least THREE teams within the next week or two

The caps are mine. I guess Max didn't get as much support as he expected? Heck, Ross Brawn prefers Ferrari engines to them Cosworths. :P

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72657

But contrary to Brawn, Fry doesn't say 'my presence on the team is not important, the job of the other people is what matters'. What I get from his words (and previous history) is that he is sure to be at the management of the team after the buy (and for some reason I feel he will be the first to be sacked :-) ). I hope that his personal 'agenda' doesn't end up with a dead or inviable team...

They're also in the awards, under the Best Political Coverage category.

As a note, he only made a single post about the nomination. No picture links of any sort.

    And his current total?

    1st - FiveThirtyEight - 13,695 (60.4%)

    2nd - American Thinker - 1,947 (8.6%)

Yep, thirteen THOUSAND votes. That's a gap of 11,748 votes to 2nd! Stunning stuff.

    Yes, if you wish:

Motorland Aragon - Another Iberian circuit, how surprising. I know it's a good climate in the winter, but what's wrong with testing elsewhere in Europe? The circuit itself looks quite good, nice twisty layout, has a Valencia feel about it.

PDLR - If he still wants a race drive, I'm thinking taking over from Fisi would be his best bet. He's much faster and seems to be better in terms of technical knowledge.

  • Matt K08/01/2009 at 14:29

I have a slightly new topic question. if you read Max's letter he wants to find something different then batteries to store the energy for KERS. Do we know that everyone is currently going to use (if they do use KERS) batteries? It sounds like some of the other options are way lighter in weight and that seems to be the big issue with KERS right now is weight. I know this is pretty privy information to just the teams, but wondered if anyone has heard anything.

The other main option for KERS is a flywheel. I have it on good authority that both battery & flywheel systems will be on the grid next year (i.e. teams aren't all going with the same type of solution).

Sounds about right. Given that KERS will probably end up being standardized for 2010, one of those two groups will have gotten a headstart, and the other might just have painted themselves into a corner for the next 2 years.

we've seen the battery systems in testing and williams bought a mechanical solution. but there's nothing to confirm any of these will actually run during a race is there?

True, but then, why run it at tests if you won't race it anyway? This late in the game, that would just be a waste of time and resources.

  • me08/01/2009 at 16:03

without testing it, how would they know if it's any good?

i'm sure they will run them, some at the season opener too. just not sure anyone's actually gone on record to say that yet.

  • Journeyer08/01/2009 at 16:04

Plus I guessed it would be safer because it might reduce the chances of electric shocks at all.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/01/2009 at 16:47

Ahem, can you two please explain this:

Mr Christine makes a pitstop from P20 lasting 15.68 seconds. Tyre choice is Cut Slick Hard. 36 laps of fuel are taken onboard (5 laps already in tank). Both cars of the team "Super Aguri" pit on the same lap, but the pit box is clear in time avoiding any delay. The mechanics made a mockery of the whole pit process! 5 seconds were wasted.

    There's your reason. :D

  • me08/01/2009 at 16:49

As Me says, a flywheel explosion, or a flywheel being set loose during an accident would be extremely scary - these things will be rotating at something like 50,000 rpm!!

You also have a problem with gyroscopic forces coming from the flywheel - probably necessitating two flywheels rotating at exactly the same speeds but in opposite directions.

I don't know how long a flywheel can store its energy for though either. Presumuably friction means it slows down over time?? - Not a problem during a race, but if you are on pole with a flywheel system, would you still have the boost power from the start line after sitting idle for 90 seconds for the grid to form, or would the guys alongside with a fully charged battery have an advantage?

On the battery subject, I did recall someone saying that the things are deemed so dangerous that the Civil Aviation Authority won't let them be flown, meaning that if anyone is planning on using for the first few flyaway races, they should be sticking them on a boat to Australia about now.

Ray - Actually, that’s what many of us are thinking. As I mentioned earlier, Russia is a prime candidate to replace Britain.

Russia has had at least 5 circuits mentioned over the last 15 years that were each going to be on the calendar within 2 years. Not one of them has even been built yet.

The 2010 Britidh GP WILL be at Silverstone and Gillett and co will pay Bernie several million to default on their contract the same as the Brands people did.

I don’t understand. It says there was no delay, but then we wasted 5 seconds? How does that follow?

It means the car behind didn't have to wait untill the first one was finished, but unfortunately your mechanics screwed up when it was the second car's turn.

And Scott, being able to put your race start slider at 100 or any value higher than 65 because of spatial awareness is complete and utter rubbish.

    Just so you know.

  • Steven Roy08/01/2009 at 17:13

Who says Kimi never does anything fun? Plus Mika’s doing it too. So it’s only a matter of time before we see Heikki in a Subaru then.

That Arctic rally is incredibly dangerous. Not because of accidents but because it is sooooo cold there if the car breaks down and you don't have the correct cold wather gear you can be dead in a very short time form hypothermia. I read an article a few years ago when Keke Rosberg was doing it. Sounds way more scary than most motor sports events.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/01/2009 at 17:14

If everyone's bothered about the safety cars, I can fiddle with the settings (yes I know :P) and reduce the chances of them so that the race is decided by the majority of what goes on on-track and not because of someone's retirement.

And Scott, being able to put your race start slider at 100 or any value higher than 65 is complete and utter rubbish. Just so you know.

I don't understand. To my knowledge, Spatial Awareness lets you do that without any kind of problems. Let me double check. I do apologise.

  • Steven Roy08/01/2009 at 17:15

The other main option for KERS is a flywheel. I have it on good authority that both battery & flywheel systems will be on the grid next year (i.e. teams aren’t all going with the same type of solution).

Williams bought a company that makes a flywheel based KERS system. It is not a secret that they wil be using a flywheel system.

  • R.G (Sidepodathon reciever on line #4.)08/01/2009 at 17:15

  • Steven Roy08/01/2009 at 17:17

Wouldn’t the flywheel-powered system be better AND safer?

Unless the flywheel becomes detached from its mountings in an accident in which case you have a discuss travelling at x moh and revolving at 80,000 rpm.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/01/2009 at 17:18

Alenyaa - I am so, so sorry. I was wrong. According to BATracer Unlimited, this is what Spatial Awareness does:

    Spatial Awareness:

    Makes passing easier and cleaner.

If you are not a whole lot faster than your opponent (which is a huge bonus for passing) but rather just a small bit faster, you will still find a small opening and exploit it.

I find it also reduces the risk of crashing as most (if not all) of the passes end up clean and with you the victor.

  • Scott Woodwiss08/01/2009 at 17:19

I would guess the batteries will lose less energy over time than the flywheel. While that may not matter in the race if we go back to the discussion about using KERS at the start the flywheel could have a disadvantage.

just wanted to give you chaps some idea of what might be causing more comments to end up in moderation / spam:

that graph shows you spam levels before xmas (was pretty constant all of 2008), then spam levels afterwards.

if it helps we're gonna make it better, when we have more time.

They should have the money by now so they can start the changes immediately.

If they've still got to raise $100 million - then there isn't going to be a 2010 British Grand Prix. No way they can raise that amount in the current economic climate.

Nope, that is indeed rFactor and from what I can tell, that is the recently released CTDP 2006 mod. You probably have no idea what that means so in basic english, it's a 2006 F1 mod.

Probably running some kind of competition. They did that a couple if years back with a steering wheel and pedals set up and the official 2006 f1 game running. First prize was 2 tickets to that year's French Grand Prix. I did my lap and went quickest. I walked away thinking "I might have just won tickets to the French GP" but came back 10 mins later and someone had gone faster.

Eurosport are live at the bivouak and reporting that Dakar leader Al-Attiyah has been thrown out the event after being caught missing waypoints today. A bit embarrassing for BMW this, as it leaves Volkswagen in the top three places.

BMW are claiming that Al-Attiyah was unable to drive across some dunes before checkpoint 2 as his engine was overheating, so took an alternative route up until then. Commentator Carlton Kirby responded: "Why didn't they stop and wait for the engine to cool down, then? Draw your own conclusions..."

    so, waypoints are checkpoints?

They're slightly different in that waypoints are hidden and there to ensure no-one takes a short-cut. Checkpoints are the official timing areas in stages. So basically it would appear that he's made it to the correct checkpoints, but decided to take his own route along the way.

It may be that they don't tell them the waypoints. They will be set a route and a few waypoints will be put in place to check that they stick to it. If the competitors know where the waypoints are then they can deviate from the course elsewhere. I am only guessing that this is the case.

  • Dank08/01/2009 at 23:54

    any gossip?

    The Dutch have taken Holland?

I have a confession to make... I bought Autosport again today. I couldn't help it. They had Vettel on the front and an 'EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH F1'S HOTTEST PROPERTY,' how could I refuse?!!

    Feeling lonely?

    Pfft. Not!

In other news, my mate won tickets for Autosport International via a promotion from the makers of Roary the Racing Car (don't ask). Unfortunately for us, they are 'family tickets.'

We're wondering if with a shave and me walking on my knees I could get away with pretending to be a minor.

    Pfft. Not!

have to admit that i'm almost tempted to but it myself, because it has a show map inside and we need maps.

  • Dank09/01/2009 at 00:09

  • me09/01/2009 at 00:09

  • me09/01/2009 at 00:11

best thing about it... it came from china :D

the original plan was to wear it at goodwood, where it would have gotten muddy and ruined. couldn't really hire it.

I can't imagine it would have been easy to take pics from inside a panda costume anyway ;)

12 parties are currently vying for Honda, but Nick Fry claims there were as many as 30 to begin with!

Well, that's good news :) With any luck one of those will be perfect for the team and will give them security for the future seasons. Lets hope Brawn and Fry choose the right buyer. Each piece of news that comes in about honda has been pointing in the direction that there chances of making it onto the grid are increasing, however with each day it gets closer and closer to the deadline of the end of Jan.

Not sure if i commented about ferrari being happy to supply ex- honda engines yesterday, but as i have been thinking about it the happier i feel about it, can't quiet put my finger on why i do just yet though.

Richards is out of the Honda running

it's a shame :( be would have been great. ah well, atm as long as they get a buyer i don't mind too much.

The bad news. Autosport did a feature on the 10 worst cars in F1 history. The winner - Honda RA107

yep, i can believe that. :(

christine got slammed via email today for being a hamilton supporter!

    :o

Donington gets approval. Now to raise some money!

wasn't really expecting that tbh. it's a step in the right direction, it's pity there are lots more steps to go :P

Well don’t get too excited, because we’ll be desperately trying to avoid hour long shows in the future.

    :(

if the man makes it happen, he's some kind of miracle worker.

  • lou09/01/2009 at 01:53

if the man makes it happen, he’s some kind of miracle worker.

i hope he works some kinda of magic and pulls it off. It will be strange without a British GP, and tbh i think it would be stupid for Bernie to scrap the British GP what with Lewismania and everything.

    I don’t understand. It says there was no delay, but then we wasted 5 seconds? How does that follow? {Christine}

It means that you and Mr Christine pitted on the same lap. Normally, this would cause a queue in your pit lane. However, you were far enough apart that there was no queue.

Unfortunately, once you got into your pit, the mechanics got the pit stop wrong, so you lost 5 seconds.

It's a bit like the Ferraris in Singapore - Kimi got out of the way just before Massa arrived in the pits, but there was a mess-up with the lights so Massa took the fuel hose with him. Substitute "fuel hose" for "finger trouble" and that's what happened to you.

Dakar rally leader’s been disqualified for missing hidden waypoints.

OOPS! Good news for Carlos Sainz - though I have to feel sorry for Al-Attiyah. Even though he knew when he didn't go through the dunes that there could be trouble later, I don't think he knew it would cause anywhere near this much hassle.
