Hello and Welcome to Thursday, I know what you are thinking its Thursday the worst day of the week. The weekend is so close but yet still so far away. The good news is that there is only one day until the British Grand Prix starts to get underway at Silverstone.

  • Yesterday Renault ruined the testing of the new poll feature here on Sidepodcast when they announced that Robert Kubica will remain with the team until the end of the 2012 season.
  • Stefano Domenicali said yesterday that it is crucial that Ferrari pick up a victory in the next three races before the summer break. There is a poll running over here on which you can pick one of the next three races you think Ferrari have the best chance of winning.
  • Paul di Resta is remaining focused on doing the best job he can in practice sessions and not think too much about whether he can land a seat in 2011.
  • Last weekend was the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and Pat W has his review of his time at the festival it has pictures and video! and is well worth a read.
  • With Doctor Who has finished now you'd think I would have nothing to talk about, but I'm going to find a way each week to keep mentioning the show. This week I bring you an anecdote from show runner Steven Moffat on the current Doctor Matt Smith:

I remember when [Matt Smith] turned up at a Worldwide meeting really early on, and the first thing he did was spill a cup of coffee over a rather lovely woman. On the way out, he apologised to a completely different woman for the coffee incident. “That was the wrong woman,” I said, as he went out the doors. “Nope,” he replied. “That was the second cup.”

Steven Moffat, Production Notes, Doctor Who Magazine

That sums up my daily post for this week. I hope you all have a good day whatever you are up to and I shall see you in the comments.

  • Jon Waldock07/07/2010 at 23:13

    who?

I'm not sure who she is, but I like the idea that its a bit Year 4-school disco-esq where the guys and girls are on separate sides :D

But Bernie said HD wasn't economically viable and fans wouldn't be prepared for it! Clearly 2CV fans have more money and are more technologically prepared than F1 fans... ;-)

are we gonna see lewis on the next series. or just darius?

I doubt we will see Lewis on it till he retires from driving. Of course his other half won the US version last series and we know he is a little competitive. Wouldn't be surprised to see him or Jenson on it when they stop driving.

Darius is a certainty to turn up. I think there is some kind of law that every reality series has to have him.

I barely remember it. He was apparently really good on Popstar to Operastar. I never saw the program but apparently his opera voice was really good. I never thought he was much of a singer which shows what I know

  • Steven Prussia08/07/2010 at 08:13

I wouldn't really worry about a map or planning there will 1000's of other guys all going to the circuit just follow the crowds. Also you can ask directions from the local residents.

Good point - had a quick at the map and it looks walkable - the motorway passes under the pedestrian walkway

It's normally a pretty good service, but - yes - their ads are irritating (I once had a major blog rant about it) and then there's the occasional mix screw-up that i mentioned earlier

Songs going missing from playlists is purely down to artists and their respective labels, not the program itself

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/07/2010 at 09:45

I know what you mean, but when it comes to owning music, I prefer vinyl sometimes. CD's are too easily transferable/disposable to have any real worth for me

  • Pat W08/07/2010 at 09:47

Songs going missing from playlists is purely down to artists and their respective labels, not the program itself

Ah, same problem last.fm had. It is a bit annoying, stupid short-sighted labels

  • Christine08/07/2010 at 09:47

Songs going missing from playlists is purely down to artists and their respective labels, not the program itself

    Not necessarily.

When I used it songs would go missing from the playlist but still be available in the catalogue. A quick Google search suggests this is still the case.

Licensing blah blah whatever, that's not my problem. If I put something in my playlist, I at least need a warning that it's disappearing, and if it's still in the catalogue, then it shouldn't be disappearing at all.

I am 100% glad I never fell for the subscription fees. That much money for so very little control.

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/07/2010 at 09:49

Songs going missing from playlists is purely down to artists and their respective labels, not the program itself

    Not necessarily.

Most likely these shouldn't be issues on the subscription service, as those contracts are penned to already receive certain shares, etc...

However the free version is a different kettle of fish altogether due to vague nature of earnings and whatnot

I'd pay the subscription if it were cheaper - tenner per month is too much. Also I'm not a fan of the idea of "you get everything or nothing"; I think it'd work much better if there was some sort of tier system like Sky where various portions could be segregated (charts for example) and broken up like that

    (if that makes any sense)

Is that guaranteed though? I'd rather spend the tenner on 12 songs I know I'm going to be able to listen to.

All I can go on is the contracts that I have seen (and withdrawn, etc...) so far; if there are technical issues with the program, I've never really come across them. Most (all?) problems in the music industry are often down to the lawyers being *****.

True, but so did iTunes for ages which is blatantly not true either. I think in most quarters there is a genuine will to makes programs like Spotify work, because artists and labels do want to get something back; however - like always - it's the very few that are screwing it up for everyone else

The premium version didn't take off at all, so they brought in a 'middle tier' at half the price.

I am all for the idea of streaming. But you can't entice people in with songs and then take them away. You just can't.

I have nothing against Spotify as a business, but if you're going to attempt a model like that you have to at least be honest with the people using it.

That's kind of what I was talking about - I've no problem paying a fiver per month, but then I'm also one of the few that tends to spend an awful lot on music per year, so £5 is probably my limit and since I only have a phone that makes phones calls, I'm not bothered by streaming from my mobile

i do. it's terrible for the consumer. it puts people exactly where the money men what them, beholden to endless subscriptions.

it's a bit like signing up to the gym. you'll always loose out, no matter how you look at it. the cards are just stacked that way.

Any track you like, any time you like. Just search for it in Spotify, then play it. Any artist, any album, any genre - all available instantly. With Spotify, there are no limits to the amount of music you could listen to. Just help yourself to whatever you want, whenever you want it.

  • me08/07/2010 at 10:10

So don't subscribe, use the free one

FREE: 20 hours per month of streaming music

that's barely two days worth of listening. a month!

On the other hand, it may completely alter the way artists approach the industry which can only be a good thing.

i disagree. the only thing that's changed is artists cannot rely on filler tracks to beef up an album. but itunes changed that, not streaming.

  • me08/07/2010 at 10:13

you cant moan about something you aren't paying for, if they limited your listening with a subscription then fair enough, but its free

I think it depends how you use it. I use Spotify maybe 3 or 4 hours per week tops, and listen to my own stuff on top of that so those concerns don't really apply to me. I use it to check out stuff that's new to me.

Must disagree - I thought the last two seasons were two of the worst in the sport's history because of the bickering. It made the sport a laughing stock across the world.

And to be honest, I can't imagine who they could have possibly ruffled by the Forum to be honest.

Bernie is wise enough to know FOTA wouldn't last forever these are teams that have been racing each other for years any peace between them would eventually come to an end.

    I have some lovely information for you all;

Remember Schumacher tested the new generation GP2 car last year to 'help them out', well it turns out the chassis's are exactly the same between the current and new cars apart from some very very minor upgrades which are more to do with safety.

Source (Just out of curiosity of course)?

Despite being visually very different, the basic chassis remains fundamentally the same apart from an enlarged driver head protection area.

This means that teams will have the option of either buying brand-new cars or having their current tubs modified to bring them up to spec.

  • Journeyer08/07/2010 at 17:03

i'd forgotten all about it. is it important?

i think it's interesting in that Anthony is trying to set up a long-term (read: post-Lewis) foothold on F1. for that to happen, he has to get the right talent in the right seats. Summerton to Cypher wasn't exactly what I had in mind as his first move.

is it important? not really, unless Lewis decides to use Anthony's network in future to look at other prospective teams.

  • me08/07/2010 at 17:05

i think it's interesting in that Anthony is trying to set up a long-term (read: post-Lewis) foothold on F1. for that to happen, he has to get the right talent in the right seats.

heh. darned right he appears much better off. PR-wise at least.

that said, space between them is good. not just for lewis to shed the fatherly reliance image he had before, but because anthony can much more discreetly look around other teams for him under the guise of managing other drivers.

    Just looking at the transcript for the press conference today;

Alonso on the texts sent between him and Hamilton:

As for SMS, I think we all send SMSs to people, so a normal thing.

and Lewis on his relationship with Jenson:

We know you guys want it but no, we’re doing a good job, I think. We’re working very much on our acting careers and they seem to be going very well because we’re convincing all of you. He’s going to be James Bond and I’m going to be the villain in the movie, so we’re working on those roles.

i'd love to have been in that press conference.

    Evening all.

Someone asked yesterday about sports after the world cup and Wimbledon and that there were no big events for two years until the Olympics and the football European championships. Earlier today it came into my mind and something occurred to me. Commonwealth games are this year. They are still 3 months away but it should give us some different sports to watch for a coupe of weeks.

Can someone please explain for me - in simple easy to understand terms - why ANYONE would PAY MONEY for a drive at HRT???

In the hope of showing that they are worth a better drive or because they have a sponsor paying for their drive.

Can someone please explain for me - in simple easy to understand terms - why ANYONE would PAY MONEY for a drive at HRT???

Just seen the story this comment was about. HRT must be desperate for cash to drop Senna for Yamamoto. I hope the FIA have two new teams lined up for nexxt season.

Yamamoto could end up costing them more in crash damage than he pays for the drive.

  • Mattw08/07/2010 at 19:43

Yes, but even if it's a sponsor (and most likly it is - people in Motor Racingare ledgendary in their ability to not spend their own money) But someone somewhere thought to themselves "Hmm, spending millions for a few races in an HRT - That's good value".

Nothing agaist HRT as a team, but if I had that sort of money, I'ld spend it a bit more wisely

I think whoever is paying the bill would have to fork out an awful lot more money to get Yamamoto in anything other than an HRT. Quite why anyone or any company wants to pay to have him drive when they could pay the same for a far better, far higher profile driver to drive the same car.

Just to expand on my point a bit more sensibly - Is it possible to show your worth in an HRT?

They have the slowest car on the grid, had diched their chassis supplier and the prospect for development in the remainder of the season looks slim.

To be honest we really cannot tell which has been better out of Senna and Chandock this year as the performance of the HRT cars is just to vairable.

  • Steven Roy08/07/2010 at 19:49

It'll be interesting to see if any new logos appear on the car.

I can't imagine any of the existing sponsors prefer to have him in the car than Senna. For a young unproven driver Bruno because of his name is better value than any other and he is a better driver

  • Mattw08/07/2010 at 19:51

    They have existing sponsors?

  • Steven Roy08/07/2010 at 19:51

Just to expand on my point a bit more sensibly - Is it possible to show your worth in an HRT?

Definitely. If he kicks Chandhok's butt then that shows what he is capable of. Senna is a known quantity as is Chandhok and we know that they are closely matched. Alonso showed he had serious potential in a Minardi that was further of the pace than an HRT and so did Webber amongst others.

  • Leigh O'Gorman08/07/2010 at 19:53

I assume someone has mentioned Bernie's hysterical little outburst earlier http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85059

Funniest thing I have read in years. It is worthy of Stalin. Talk about re-writing history and poacher turned gamekeeper. It was fine for him to set up FOCA to take on FISA when he ran Brabham but how dare the teams today organise themselves to take on his corrupt regime. This could turn out to be the biggest story of the next year or so depending on developments.

I thought the teams should just have told him to sod off. He is just throwing some muscle around but I hope it comes back to bite him. I really hope the teams just cut him out completely. He has bled the sport dry and delivered little.

I've been thinking about it. I thought he was trying 'divide and rule' but that wouldn't work if he does it to all of them. Perhaps he is trying to create instability, when they are pee'd off they'll make rash decisions like going against FOTA, which is what he wants.

I don't think they are going to let Bernie walk all over them as they have for 30 years. It is crazy that he runs the constructors association and is not only not a constructor but is an FIA vice president and the commercial rights holder's rep. Talk about conflict of interest. He represents all three sides. THe teams need to strike back before Ferrari stab them in the back again.

It is divide and rule. It is easier to divide people who are not happy so he makes them unhappy then does back door deals. THis is how he has always worked

If you were a sponsor and you could be associated with Senna or Yamamoto who would you choose? Even if you were Japanese and wanted exposure in Japan only Senna is a bigger name. Ayrton was by a huge factor the most popular driver with the Japanese

What did Virgin do, put water in the fibre optics?!

  • Alianora La Canta08/07/2010 at 21:53

    Funniest thing I have read in years. It is worthy of Stalin. Talk about re-writing history and poacher turned gamekeeper. It was fine for him to set up FOCA to take on FISA when he ran Brabham but how dare the teams today organise themselves to take on his corrupt regime. This could turn out to be the biggest story of the next year or so depending on developments. {Comment #458}

Seeing as Bernie was one of the ones who helped start the trend he is intending on stopping (i.e. marketing everything in sight), he can't really complain about teams doing it now.

And his behaviour demonstrates precisely why there is room for FOTA. While the powers-that-be concentrate more on power-grabbing than improving the sport, someone will always need to remind them to re-focus on what matters and give them a good kick to ensure they get there.

I doubt this will be the flashpoint, but the drops are starting to wear away the stone again...

gah! i've just come back from shopping and was hoping it would be fixed by now. silly thing.

  • Alianora La Canta08/07/2010 at 21:56

    can you fathom the "moving the truck cabs out of the paddock thing"? i don't get it, nor do i get why the teams just did as they were told. {Comment #459}

It's Bernie trying little things to squash FOTA, since going in all guns blazing failed for the FIA...

  • Pat W08/07/2010 at 22:03

There's a WRC rally this week and it is on tarmac, the first of that type this season. Kimi should be fast on asphalt..

By the way, I won't be live commenting tomorrow because I'm at work. I've got the office to myself but it wouldn't be fair to abuse the internet connection.

I entered the VivaF1 prediction game and said pole would be 1m29s because that's 115% of last year, and that's the time gap FIA GT had between layouts. Don't let me down, F1 people.
