Hello and Welcome to Thursday, I know what you are thinking its Thursday the worst day of the week. The weekend is so close but yet still so far away. The good news is that there is only one day until the British Grand Prix starts to get underway at Silverstone.
- Yesterday Renault ruined the testing of the new poll feature here on Sidepodcast when they announced that Robert Kubica will remain with the team until the end of the 2012 season.
- Stefano Domenicali said yesterday that it is crucial that Ferrari pick up a victory in the next three races before the summer break. There is a poll running over here on which you can pick one of the next three races you think Ferrari have the best chance of winning.
- Paul di Resta is remaining focused on doing the best job he can in practice sessions and not think too much about whether he can land a seat in 2011.
- Last weekend was the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and Pat W has his review of his time at the festival it has pictures and video! and is well worth a read.
- With Doctor Who has finished now you'd think I would have nothing to talk about, but I'm going to find a way each week to keep mentioning the show. This week I bring you an anecdote from show runner Steven Moffat on the current Doctor Matt Smith:
I remember when [Matt Smith] turned up at a Worldwide meeting really early on, and the first thing he did was spill a cup of coffee over a rather lovely woman. On the way out, he apologised to a completely different woman for the coffee incident. “That was the wrong woman,” I said, as he went out the doors. “Nope,” he replied. “That was the second cup.”
Steven Moffat, Production Notes, Doctor Who Magazine
That sums up my daily post for this week. I hope you all have a good day whatever you are up to and I shall see you in the comments.
I have been given my 'shifts' for this years 2CV 24 hours....
5.30-8.30 (Saturday) = Good
12pm-6am = Bad, very very bad
12am-3pm = Good now, will be awful then.
essshhhh.
Ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip
classic!
oooh yes, you'll like this, we're in talks with a production company who may be live streaming the race....in HD
#mfc
nice daily james. cheers. yell when you're around though, the quoting thing has gone a bit wonky. i could fix it for you, but that would lock you out of the post forever.
that's hell of a step up. excellent news. of course bernie will deny it's happening.
more from the grand pirx ball:
@emmastonier: Everyones a bit shy to hit the dancefloor as Karen hardy from Strictly is busting some moves
who?
I'm not sure who she is, but I like the idea that its a bit Year 4-school disco-esq where the guys and girls are on separate sides :D
SHe is a professional dancer who won Strictly with some cricket player. She is world champion at something or other
She has a website apparently
http://karenhardy.com/
But Bernie said HD wasn't economically viable and fans wouldn't be prepared for it! Clearly 2CV fans have more money and are more technologically prepared than F1 fans... ;-)
ahh, i recognise her. #neverwatchedithonest
:)
yeah, sure... :-)
Busted
can't prove nothing.
are we gonna see lewis on the next series. or just darius?
I doubt we will see Lewis on it till he retires from driving. Of course his other half won the US version last series and we know he is a little competitive. Wouldn't be surprised to see him or Jenson on it when they stop driving.
Darius is a certainty to turn up. I think there is some kind of law that every reality series has to have him.
:)
would it be wrong to admit i liked his single?
I barely remember it. He was apparently really good on Popstar to Operastar. I never saw the program but apparently his opera voice was really good. I never thought he was much of a singer which shows what I know
Scroll down a bit; a nice mini-dig from our friends across the pond.
* Unfortunately Formula 1 and GP2 still aren’t broadcast in HD.

humilating
Hope someone sends that to Bernie

lousynon-existent.hehehe I'd happily work for you guys for free
#badbusinesswoman
you may need a manager. although, finding one happy to take 20% of nothing could be tricky.
hahaha I'm sure I could
trickget em to help out with thati like your thinking!
she's reading a magazine atm so I'm confident I would be able to pull it off lol
Okay, it's late. Bed time for us. I hope Amy doesn't miss my heikki picture when she arrives :)
Night all xx
this one?
yay!! :)
dont worry lou there is sooo much tennis before the us open!
a brief good morning
morning leigh, bye lou...
ps that heikki picture is lovely. i feel you are holding out on the catherine though!
morning guille
finally after lots of head wracking, i've figured that i can get from the track on friday to the white horse pub in silverstone to pick up a bus to northampton and then go down top joe's.... phew
Ah, I do like Doctor Who in the daily. Gooo James.
Morning all.
Morning :)
Have you guys seen this video where Sarah Holt gets driven around the new Silverstone by Damon Hill and Ant? http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sarahholt/2010/07/a_closeup_view_of_the_new_silv.html
anybody on at the moment? I have a question about Silverstone....
Hi, I am and going to the race.
Do you know if it's easy to get from Silverstone High Street to the circuit? I had a look on Google maps and it looks like a motorway in the way, but it looks like it's only about 2km
I am here but know nowt about silverstone :D
Is there a Google Street View of the section?
google street view is the best trip planning tool ever. ever. EVER.
Two seconds and I'll dig it up
I wouldn't really worry about a map or planning there will 1000's of other guys all going to the circuit just follow the crowds. Also you can ask directions from the local residents.
Good point - had a quick at the map and it looks walkable - the motorway passes under the pedestrian walkway
:)
I'd even bring my bike if there was somewhere to stash it - my bike's so terrible that no one would ever bother stealing it
Just like mine - looks like s*** but goes like stink ;)
My brother bought his bike for a pound from a bloke in a pub and always said that the best feature of it was that he didn't ever have to worry about locking it
I've got one of those old butcher's bike's which is about 30 years old - only cost £25. so i'm not too worried
;)
Get Jealous Alex travels all across the globe, and hits his first stumbling block at Silverstone: http://www.getjealous.com/getjealous.php?action=showdiaryentry&diary_id=1456181&go=alexjsnell
Typical.
After the last few days, I can confirm it's not a surprise...
ew, camping
I have heard a few grumbles about Silverstone and difficulties lately...
boo that he can get camping and i cant. silly silverstone
morning all
that'd be me then....
morning jon
Ah! Normally I would have asked last night but as soon as I finished writing the daily I fell asleep :)
I think it sums up Matt Smith rather well.
Hehe, I agree.
That's quite dramatic. Needs some spooky music underneath too.
yay for James, it's totally epic. I love the quote because in my head he says it in a doctor-y way. yayy
and a 'mwahahahah' at the end
hehe :)
best part is after watching the series you can imagine the doctor doing that.
love for Matt Smith is rising - he has definitely placed himself amongst Hartnell, Troughton and Tom Baker in the Leigh love stakes
:)
indeed. i think if he stays long enough he could eclipse Tennant. Considering my feelings at the start of the series thats quite a turnaround. ;)
I didn't mind Tennant, but I found some of his tendencies a little annoying (but then again that could have been RTD's writing....)
Yay! It's Tortilla day in the canteen :D
Question: Brazil whenever it was, when Nick Heidfeld hit the safety car, did he get a penalty for that?
2001, No
Unless he was fined, but I don't remember that - I do recall watching in horror though
Possibly 2002 - my mind plays tricks on me all the time
Indeed it was 2002. I suspect there was a fine involved.
From what i've seen most people blame Russel.
speaking of doctor who, dalek cupcakes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DNgB3-ii-Y
If I recall though, there may have been an issue of no flags being waved either
yaaaaaay. i love the music too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUUUKuo8hXs
There were flags at the actual corner, but I suspect there were no double-waved yellows at the previous corner. The marshal was probably too focused on the red flag.
Yes, that was it!!
Thursday morning annoyance!!
Spotify are clearly using poorly mixed, mono mixed or forced stereo versions of older tracks in the programme.
Grrrrrrrr.....
Wow, is Spotify still going?
What do people use instead these days?
No idea. I got in a grump with Spotify and never looked back. I thought all the talk was that streaming services aren't working.
Spotify is doing quite well and growing nicely thank you. US version to be launched in the coming months once the lawyers get their fingers out
Morning.
More people are using it than ever after their recent facelift and upgrades.
I still don't like the ads or the 'fake seeking' in the free version but I still use it every week.
Does anyone know if the wooden bridge at Silverstone has been replaced yet?
It's normally a pretty good service, but - yes - their ads are irritating (I once had a major blog rant about it) and then there's the occasional mix screw-up that i mentioned earlier
Does it still steal songs from your playlists?
I like Spotify but I just prefer to own my music ;)
How do you mean?
Songs going missing from playlists is purely down to artists and their respective labels, not the program itself
I know what you mean, but when it comes to owning music, I prefer vinyl sometimes. CD's are too easily transferable/disposable to have any real worth for me
Ah, same problem last.fm had. It is a bit annoying, stupid short-sighted labels
Not necessarily.
When I used it songs would go missing from the playlist but still be available in the catalogue. A quick Google search suggests this is still the case.
Licensing blah blah whatever, that's not my problem. If I put something in my playlist, I at least need a warning that it's disappearing, and if it's still in the catalogue, then it shouldn't be disappearing at all.
I am 100% glad I never fell for the subscription fees. That much money for so very little control.
Most likely these shouldn't be issues on the subscription service, as those contracts are penned to already receive certain shares, etc...
However the free version is a different kettle of fish altogether due to vague nature of earnings and whatnot
I like the convenience of not having to buy anything :)
http://twitpic.com/23fcoi
Karun names his engines...
I'd pay the subscription if it were cheaper - tenner per month is too much. Also I'm not a fan of the idea of "you get everything or nothing"; I think it'd work much better if there was some sort of tier system like Sky where various portions could be segregated (charts for example) and broken up like that
(if that makes any sense)
Is that guaranteed though? I'd rather spend the tenner on 12 songs I know I'm going to be able to listen to.
All I can go on is the contracts that I have seen (and withdrawn, etc...) so far; if there are technical issues with the program, I've never really come across them. Most (all?) problems in the music industry are often down to the lawyers being *****.
(Sad, but very very true)
Afternoon :)
hi alison
howdy!
Do we think I can persuade Amy to come and pack for me?
That's fine, but Spotify sells itself as: Any track you like, any time you like.
Which is a lie.
Most definitely! I'm sure she'd love it.
True, but so did iTunes for ages which is blatantly not true either. I think in most quarters there is a genuine will to makes programs like Spotify work, because artists and labels do want to get something back; however - like always - it's the very few that are screwing it up for everyone else
Hoorah, I'll give her an hour to get here ;)
The premium version didn't take off at all, so they brought in a 'middle tier' at half the price.
http://www.spotify.com/uk/blog/archives/2010/05/18/open-and-unlimted/
http://www.spotify.com/uk/get-spotify/overview/
I am all for the idea of streaming. But you can't entice people in with songs and then take them away. You just can't.
I have nothing against Spotify as a business, but if you're going to attempt a model like that you have to at least be honest with the people using it.
All I need now is someone to wrap up nick's birthday present... I really should have done it before I came!
True, they've changed their stance to "access to millions of songs" now
i do. it's terrible for the consumer. it puts people exactly where the money men what them, beholden to endless subscriptions.
it's a bit like signing up to the gym. you'll always loose out, no matter how you look at it. the cards are just stacked that way.
So don't subscribe, use the free one
Any track you like, any time you like. Just search for it in Spotify, then play it. Any artist, any album, any genre - all available instantly. With Spotify, there are no limits to the amount of music you could listen to. Just help yourself to whatever you want, whenever you want it.
FREE: 20 hours per month of streaming music
that's barely two days worth of listening. a month!
On the other hand, it may completely alter the way artists approach the industry which can only be a good thing.
Maybe to you. I don't listen that often.
you cant moan about something you aren't paying for, if they limited your listening with a subscription then fair enough, but its free
Can it? I'm not sure I believe that...
i think i listened to more music than that over the past four days working on the polls. it's a really poor deal for the consumer.
i disagree. the only thing that's changed is artists cannot rely on filler tracks to beef up an album. but itunes changed that, not streaming.
i'm not. i was simply pointing out the flaw in pat's suggestion.
i'd pay if the service offered value for money.
I've never come back to online music really since they blocked Pandora in the UK. I know it's back now but I've never got into anything again since I got out of that habit.
Chandhok's on a bus now: http://twitpic.com/23fhln
Which is why lawyers screwing around with programs like Spotify (and others) is not good for the industry. When the free version of Spotify was pulled from Ireland, it basically killed the previously good buzz in one foul swoop
He is determined to get as many points as possible ;)
I used to stream music from little known artists maybe 5 hours a day while I was working. I bought a lot of tracks after discovering them like that but as I said, I completely kicked the habit when it was blocked.
It's almost like Schumacher 2002!!
My home for the next 3 days;
http://twitpic.com/23fk7e
Looks like a blue sky, what more can you ask of Silverstone?
Good job you lucky sod
;D
no probs, are you free now?
I think it depends how you use it. I use Spotify maybe 3 or 4 hours per week tops, and listen to my own stuff on top of that so those concerns don't really apply to me. I use it to check out stuff that's new to me.
I am indeed. :)
given they moved the grandstands back, 7 thousand miles from the track. they must have at least lengthened it.
groovy. in admin, can you see the list of shortcodes down the right hand side of the edit post window?
cool
Yep.
there's one there for quotes called "quote". click it and a block gets added to the post.
quote text goes between the bracket and the persons name in the attribute. should be easy to follow.
done :)
legend.
The Loch Ness Monster
Ooh, very fancy! :)
The shortcodes are brilliant. I didn't realise they were there.
Don't tell him things like that. Bah. He's impossible already about the polls.
pull quote is also fun, you should try that in next weeks daily. at some point we're trying to make it so you can add polls yourself too. at the moment, we still need to set them up for you.
watch this space.
i likes people being able to see all the backend things that used to be for your eyes only.
There is that, I suppose. They are quite fancy. And simple. For silly people like me that never, ever got their head around tables.
Ooh, James, try a table next time. They're fab!
oh the power.... ;)
I need a reason to put a table in the daily first.
Mmm, tricky. There must be something Doctor Who related we can tabulate.
I'm watching come dine with me and have finally found a man with a more warped approach to food hygiene than Nick... :P
you have lots to plan for next week then. epic daily?
hehe. get the polls working and I could put one of those in as well :P
The number of times he says Pond in each episode. Good excuse to watch them all again too :)
not by next week sadly. but if you tell us in advanced they can be setup. we might be quite keen to try them out... i say "we".
You could have a thing whereby we can chart which new series episode is influenced by an original series episode...
:)
*chants* Character Cup! Character Cup! Character Cup!
blame joe... or me. whatever.
Hehe. Noooo. We had to make sure it was ready. What if the Hungarians come back?
for a driver poll. that would be weird.
Stranger things have happened...
I was planning on re watching them anyway. tempting ;)
Woooohoo!
ah thats ok. I'll use different codes each week :)
Ya never know, tons of Hungarians may support Kubica, eastern european and all that...
Or Zsolt Boumgartner somehow gets in.
Hey lovely peoples.
if you wanted to try some before then, you could always put together a guest post or three...
goo zsolt.
First ever GP winner was Hungarian, but they've barely figured ever since - weird....
I've got nothing to write about :P
sounds like a challenge.
potential blog ideas:
- flavio being back on the grid. bad for f1, and if so how to get rid of him?
- massa vs. alonso, how each handled disappointment in valencia, what was said and who handled it better
- driver stewards, are they helping or hindering. can any changes be made?
- what other nice engineers are out there now we know Rob is a total technophobe?
also:
- fixing the safety car issue, what changes should be made?
- f1 coverage. everyone is doing high definition, except bernie. name and shame.
"how crushed are you that rob isn't a geek like we thought he would be?"
that could work.
hehe. i think that is more suited for Christine than me.
hmm I like the sound of that.
we haven't yet discussed moveable rear wings on this site. at least not in detail. also maybe something about pirelli. like, suggestions on how they can do things better than bridgestone.
stop me if you're inspired.
ooh. yay!
I'll do something on Pirelli next week if you fancy, but it might not be the most forward thinking post I'd have ever done
That is definitely not suited to Christine.
retro is good too :)
heeh. am i thinking up ideas for you too?
I am working on something at the moment, thank you very much.
I wonder if... is it a common thing that people would like to write but don't have ideas? Because we have loads of ideas and no time to write.
Maybe a wiki page would be useful.
via lookingspiffy. rob video: http://www.ferrari.com/English/Formula1/News/Specials/Pages/smedley_talking_about_british_gp.aspx
don't know. i don't like to write at all, even when i has time. but i'm pretty sure we could keep a team of people busy for months.
agreed.
I have ideas and not enough time. I blame the World Cup.
:)
I like that they use footage of the F2008 clearly no love for the current car.
Me too (still hasn't even done the Fantasy Racers scores from the last GP)...
anyone would think the need a media day to film more footage...
I haven't done the scores for the last race... oh dear... the next race is coming up now isn't it... Oh dear oh dear... I really have no excuse as doing the scores on the new system is really about 2 minutes work!
seeing as i'm researching it now, didn't they install HD cameras on the cars at Abu Dhabi last season. or did I imagine that?
Not forgetting the 3D camera on a Lotus a couple of races back and HD camera's on some cars during last years Monaco weekend
there was some talk of brawn running a special camera. was that hd or 3d though?
Ecclestone: No room for FOTA in F1: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85059
awesome!
Ah, well worth mentioning thanks :)
I seem to remember Lewis running at least a better camera at Valencia last season. The quality difference was amazing, I shall see what I can find.
Please spare me incessant 3D nonsense... I can't think of anything I'd like less
Oh dear, I hope this isn't going to turn into a repeat of the last two years all over again
ooh, i hope it is. clearly they've ruffled some feathers with their forum.
Must disagree - I thought the last two seasons were two of the worst in the sport's history because of the bickering. It made the sport a laughing stock across the world.
And to be honest, I can't imagine who they could have possibly ruffled by the Forum to be honest.
Bernie is wise enough to know FOTA wouldn't last forever these are teams that have been racing each other for years any peace between them would eventually come to an end.
there is that.
was it f1 related? yep. did bernie make any money out of it? no.
bernie doesn't want open when open doesn't equal profit.
but no-body made any money out of it surely?
There was the endlessssssssssssssssssss Santander branding...
well maybe james allen. that's not the point though. bernie didn't make any money. and you could argue they were trading on his trademark.
Yeah i saw that, but it cost them money to put it on. In terms of marketing value they'd get it back, but not in terms of actual money
And? More fool them in Bernies eyes... He just wants his cut!
Is F1 definitely his trademark now? Because i thought there was confusion as to whether it actually was or not
Then he's a sad old man
nope, but what does FOTA stand for?
yeah i know that, but i swear there was a court case ages ago etc etc. just wondered
but more successful than any of us. i really do think fota's time is up, i cannot believe they'll last the season.
He can't help himself can he
i don't care that he's more sucessful than me, i'd rather have a back bone than that amount of money
i don't think he's lacking a backbone. he simply isn't prepared to be taken to the cleaners by a bunch of wannabes. which in my eyes is all fota amount too.
my point was that if the fans forum started this off because he didnt get a cut, then thats very sad
i don't think it started it.
This isn't about the forum. It isn't about advertising either.
This is about the teams getting a far bigger cut than they have previously and Bernie showing them who's boss.
the timing isn't coincidental though, surely?
No, I think it was a useful trigger or excuse for him. He was waiting for the right time and that appears to be now.
But also remember something big always breaks at Silverstone.
Does this need a breakout thread?
Well, that's kinda spooky.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/08/on-this-day-a-shadow-over-silverstone/
might create some interesting debate. fancy writing one?
*pat knows*
Can't at the moment ... I would have thought this is more your subject, anyways ;)
i wrote three posts last night. i have no intention of blogging again before autumn :)
wow :)
I'm enjoying writing this post on HD in F1. Mr C what have you done?
off to lunch - back in a bit
:)
FWIW, FOM doesn't even own formulaone.com.
w00t! just yell if you're ever bored.
so far, all indications look like they will. the lack of a silly season also means there's less for teams to argue about.
it sounds like bernie is a tad annoyed that he can't divide and conquer the teams like he used to...
will do! the good thing about the HD subject is there has been a lot said about it recently :)
Are you sure? They took over the site a few years ago after a big public fight for it?
You're referring to formula1.com, not formulaone.com.
http://www.formulaone.com/en/Default.aspx
They sell high-performance auto tint, apparently.
or the chain of French hotels called Formule 1, which uses black/white chequers in its branding
http://www.hotelformule1.com/gb/home/index.shtml
Oooh didn't know that!
annnd, they have FormulaOne as a registered trademark....
There used to be one of those down the road from me, literally 2 minutes. Something else now.
They have french hotels up norf?
They even have a YouTube channel!
http://www.youtube.com/FormulaOneFilm
Really? I thought you only saw them in France
That channel must have had a lot of disappointed visitors!
Looking at the website they have em worldwide.
Channel Views: 609
A lot indeed. :)
They have them all over the world. They're a good bet for somewhere cheap, clean and dry if you're ever stuck in a random country... Same chain as Ibis, Etap and Novotel. They're all aimed at different price brackets.
I have some lovely information for you all;
Remember Schumacher tested the new generation GP2 car last year to 'help them out', well it turns out the chassis's are exactly the same between the current and new cars apart from some very very minor upgrades which are more to do with safety.
Therefore negating any need for testing of it.
Source (Just out of curiosity of course)?
Despite being visually very different, the basic chassis remains fundamentally the same apart from an enlarged driver head protection area.
This means that teams will have the option of either buying brand-new cars or having their current tubs modified to bring them up to spec.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85014
Good spotting! Quite the paddock reporter now ;)
Not bad for still sitting on my bed :P
gm-esque ;)
*gmm
hehehe
Very very interesting indeed. But wouldn't the aero be very different from the previous spec? They might have wanted to check the basic car balance?
Ahh, but better. :D
Ah, for some reason I thought you were there already ;)
JWM?
nicht, not until tomorrow, although ive discovered now i could have gone today but got told tomorrow originally
#shakesfist
Think the Autosport spy-shot was rubbish and small?
See The Feeder Series for actual photography
http://www.feederseries.net/?p=941
It's probably because of the colour scheme, but it looks a heck of lot like the Sauber... :D
aha! i said that too!
Who designed it?
Dallara
indeed so. :D
Sauber-Hispania? :D
No link to them then... interesting
I would take a punt that because its white and looks f1-esq that its a bit sauberish.
anyway, how awesome is the exhaust?

Mr C I've finished writing (i have nothing better to do today ;)) am i allowed to publish straight away or is it something you'd want to check over first?
woah that is a fugly nose.
we trust ya. go for it.
hehe the power ;)
how do i include youtube videos, is there a shortcode for those as well? :P
ahh, no. could do that though. for the moment, just copy the embed from the youtube page. max width 600px.
Has darren heath stopped doing his big picture thing for the beeb?
He has turned up on the yas site, I really like the photo: http://www.facebook.com/notes/yas-marina-circuit-official-fan-page/story-behind-the-picture/117669581613308

yay!
Hooorah! I found my Christijan Albers hat!
wooop wooop
Woo, super Albers.
I feel that with my Spyker-Albers hat and my Ralf Schumacher poster, I am set for the weekend!

Somebody who went to Goodwood has to make a comment about Jarno being Grumpy here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=6004259&id=292309963464

someone's ran out of paddock space.
i don't see the comment?
nope;

they got asked to move them because of sponsorship
I didn't go to Goodwood. I'm just saying that someone should ask if he's as grumpy this weekend as he was then?
oh i see.
No this was about the advertising thing with Bernie
Will look when I'm home, don't want to go on FB while at work..
i didn't realise that's what they were referring too. how much branding can be shown on a cab?
clearly this amount
http://www.jamesneale.com/renaultf1/P6230020.jpg
is too much....
....
that's just the weirdest thing. still i have a question for joe now!
have we seen the outside of lewis' ride today?

I still believe it is a Bernie power play and he's just found an excuse/loophole to hit them with
That is one lovely bus :)
Hello all
Why are the journos still banging on about Raikkonen? Isn't committed to WRC?

Rumour has it Mastercard are interested in sponsoring Renault if Kimi is there.

Any word on Sam Michaels?
Oh really? that could be big.. not sure they'd have room for two big name quick guys though, as discussed the other day..

amazed they are sticking with cossie.
about as fugly as the new gp2 car.
I think there were mumblings of that back along, he was already very senior isn't he? Quite surprised about Cosworth.
It is apparently possible. I think Kimi will remain rallying and might be tempted to do some testing for Pirelli other than that I don't think he'll come back.

Loads of news!
New SC protocol is to make the Delta time much slower, it'll be tested after each FP session this weekend: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85072
hehe. i hadn't seen the ones on the side only the star on top ;)
ahh
Would be simpler to close the pitlane.
much better! hallelujah.
I wonder if they're trying to avoid everyone coming in at once?
this is safer though. the delta was always to fast.
I think so, yes.
I can understand that but as Rubens says in the article the driver doesn't always see the lights on the dash immediately.
the teams need to implement a soft bleep in their headphones. easy to do.
true. i don't think this change will make Ferrari any happier though.
new Ferrari logo all lit up: http://planetf1.com/photo-gallery/6252074/F1-Gears-Up-For-Silverstone#photo=14
problem with the logo is that now i still think malboro when i see it, which is why they changed it

i actually like it!
and... call me a cynic, but that looks like half a Marlboro logo.

I have been in touch with a lot of people through F1 because quite a lot of people with A1GP were involved in F1. I have also been working along with Anthony Hamilton and I have been in touch with him for his help and advice. I have been in touch with Cypher since they started. And from there it has progressed slowly.
via @virginracing, croftie and holly at work: http://yfrog.com/f/457jgj/
ahh silverstone media centre, its quite nice in their actually. i once had an awesome lasagne there
Finally someone brought up Anthony Hamilton's agency. Interesting to see if Anthony thinks Cypher is a legit entity.
Oh, and hello. Just dropping by.
i'd forgotten all about it. is it important?
i think it's interesting in that Anthony is trying to set up a long-term (read: post-Lewis) foothold on F1. for that to happen, he has to get the right talent in the right seats. Summerton to Cypher wasn't exactly what I had in mind as his first move.
is it important? not really, unless Lewis decides to use Anthony's network in future to look at other prospective teams.
i'm amazed he thinks he was any use as a driver manager, lewis appears so much better off without him.
heh. darned right he appears much better off. PR-wise at least.
that said, space between them is good. not just for lewis to shed the fatherly reliance image he had before, but because anthony can much more discreetly look around other teams for him under the guise of managing other drivers.
why would he leave and where would he go, though? he's in the the best team that isn't built around a driver called seb.
i don't necessarily think he'll leave, but it's nice to have that flexibility in case he needs it. where would he go in case he does? ferrari may be a much more attractive option in 3 years with pat fry around. but that's assuming alonso isn't there anymore...
alonso would stay just to spite him.
i'll tell ya. nobody breaks a le mans story faster than autosport: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85079
just like prost-senna, then? :D but you're right - odds are on alonso staying. he'll only be 32 in 3 years time. he'll still have another 3 years or so left in him after that.
heheheh

hang on... where IS Michael?
ooh. no idea.
Wait, what?! http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/senna-out-yamamoto-in/
wow, no way
Also just hearing that JR Hildebrand will be one of the revolving cast of characters standing in for Mike Conway later in the year.
Its, madness.
I was hoping the return of teams a bit off the pace would mean we wouldn't see the rent-a-driver fad again, til now they've hired good pedallers..
that'll mess up the rankings...
True. Interesting no one else has reported it and no one seems to have told Senna: http://twitter.com/BSenna/statuses/18051852735

luvit!
indeed. i'm determined to find something for Fernando he's only got 1 point.
Hi folks,
All I can say is "grrrrrrrrrr..."
It has to be a last-minute thing surely, else why would Bruno have gone to Cosworth today?
i guess a deadlined passed? still yet to be confirmed though.
Aaahhhhhh... that makes sense. Bruno is being held hostage by Cosworth until HRT pay their bills and so Yamamoto is jumping into the car to save the day!!
Just looking at the transcript for the press conference today;
Alonso on the texts sent between him and Hamilton:
As for SMS, I think we all send SMSs to people, so a normal thing.
and Lewis on his relationship with Jenson:
We know you guys want it but no, we’re doing a good job, I think. We’re working very much on our acting careers and they seem to be going very well because we’re convincing all of you. He’s going to be James Bond and I’m going to be the villain in the movie, so we’re working on those roles.
i'd love to have been in that press conference.
I read the press conference - it really seemed as if the press was stretched for questions

Awww, we have to wait for more in the morning, but its happening, Senna out: http://twitter.com/legardj/statuses/18054961268
Still sucks monkeyballs though
Woah, wait why?!
am sooo glad the character cup was delayed.
Could be details for the rest of the season................
But Senna has so much more PERSONALITY than that robot Sakon.
I might blog about this later on
Bruno is also a MUCH better driver - Sakon is awful
and talent.
yamamoto replaced franck at super aguri right?
Yep
Bruno should stay in the cup.
And Albers at Spyker.
Grr.
I seem to remember the last time Sakon drove he basically wished Markus Winkelhock back in the car.
it seems so. Jenson and Lewis are getting on fine, in fact i'm starting to like McLaren again they must be doing something right.
Sakon is also only the second driver to go down to GP2 from F1 - can anyone name the first?
interesting. we'll have to have a think.
Pantano - but he had greater success.
Third, after Glock and Pantano. Although I'm not sure of the timeline.
And Giorgio is also the only GP2 champion not to get promoted directly to F1.
2004 Glock went to F3000.
Nope, he won the 2007 GP2 Series.
After Champ Car in 05...
Forgot about Pantano - Glock did GP2 in 2007 after Champ Car
Thing is, Sakon has nothing on Glock and Pantano
Oops, we had a memory shuffle. I forgot about Glock, you forgot about Pantano. Beer?
he has better backers, clearly.
Where's my Visa?
Sounds good

Someone asked yesterday about sports after the world cup and Wimbledon and that there were no big events for two years until the Olympics and the football European championships. Earlier today it came into my mind and something occurred to me. Commonwealth games are this year. They are still 3 months away but it should give us some different sports to watch for a coupe of weeks.

Can someone please explain for me - in simple easy to understand terms - why ANYONE would PAY MONEY for a drive at HRT???
In the hope of showing that they are worth a better drive or because they have a sponsor paying for their drive.
Just seen the story this comment was about. HRT must be desperate for cash to drop Senna for Yamamoto. I hope the FIA have two new teams lined up for nexxt season.
Yamamoto could end up costing them more in crash damage than he pays for the drive.
Yes, but even if it's a sponsor (and most likly it is - people in Motor Racingare ledgendary in their ability to not spend their own money) But someone somewhere thought to themselves "Hmm, spending millions for a few races in an HRT - That's good value".
Nothing agaist HRT as a team, but if I had that sort of money, I'ld spend it a bit more wisely
In the hope of showing that they are worth a better drive or because they have a sponsor paying for their drive.
Not Yamamoto again. Gah.
I think whoever is paying the bill would have to fork out an awful lot more money to get Yamamoto in anything other than an HRT. Quite why anyone or any company wants to pay to have him drive when they could pay the same for a far better, far higher profile driver to drive the same car.
It'll be interesting to see if any new logos appear on the car.
I only just found out. If you want to think about something else I have found our next multi sport extravaganza
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/08/daily-8th-july-2010/comments/#comment-836375
Just to expand on my point a bit more sensibly - Is it possible to show your worth in an HRT?
They have the slowest car on the grid, had diched their chassis supplier and the prospect for development in the remainder of the season looks slim.
To be honest we really cannot tell which has been better out of Senna and Chandock this year as the performance of the HRT cars is just to vairable.
I can't imagine any of the existing sponsors prefer to have him in the car than Senna. For a young unproven driver Bruno because of his name is better value than any other and he is a better driver
They have existing sponsors?
Definitely. If he kicks Chandhok's butt then that shows what he is capable of. Senna is a known quantity as is Chandhok and we know that they are closely matched. Alonso showed he had serious potential in a Minardi that was further of the pace than an HRT and so did Webber amongst others.
I still believe that Hispania are holding out for an off-season buyer.
Sakon will not kick Chandhok's butt - not in several years
Yes but not many
Absolutely no chance. Badoer''s maybe but that's his level
I assume someone has mentioned Bernie's hysterical little outburst earlier http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85059
Funniest thing I have read in years. It is worthy of Stalin. Talk about re-writing history and poacher turned gamekeeper. It was fine for him to set up FOCA to take on FISA when he ran Brabham but how dare the teams today organise themselves to take on his corrupt regime. This could turn out to be the biggest story of the next year or so depending on developments.
can you fathom the "moving the truck cabs out of the paddock thing"? i don't get it, nor do i get why the teams just did as they were told.
I thought the teams should just have told him to sod off. He is just throwing some muscle around but I hope it comes back to bite him. I really hope the teams just cut him out completely. He has bled the sport dry and delivered little.
i don't think they have the balls to fight back.
I've been thinking about it. I thought he was trying 'divide and rule' but that wouldn't work if he does it to all of them. Perhaps he is trying to create instability, when they are pee'd off they'll make rash decisions like going against FOTA, which is what he wants.
I.AM.ANGRY
GRRRR

http://torontopilates.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/used-tennis-balls.jpg
I don't think they are going to let Bernie walk all over them as they have for 30 years. It is crazy that he runs the constructors association and is not only not a constructor but is an FIA vice president and the commercial rights holder's rep. Talk about conflict of interest. He represents all three sides. THe teams need to strike back before Ferrari stab them in the back again.
It is divide and rule. It is easier to divide people who are not happy so he makes them unhappy then does back door deals. THis is how he has always worked
Bad day?
Yamamoto fever me thinks
I've had a good day, a very good day, and a very good journey in the car so I am poised to get to silverstone bright and early tomorrow.
But this.
THIS!
aaaaaagh
#rantover
How can they do this?!
£££ with a bit more £££ and a hint of £££ on the sides.
But how does he have money?! Or more to the point, how does he have more money than Senna?
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/08/first-2010-driver-change-yamamoto-in-for-senna/
Senna's bringing some money, but not loads I believe - it was rumoured he brought between £5-8 million
If you were a sponsor and you could be associated with Senna or Yamamoto who would you choose? Even if you were Japanese and wanted exposure in Japan only Senna is a bigger name. Ayrton was by a huge factor the most popular driver with the Japanese

Seeing as Bernie was one of the ones who helped start the trend he is intending on stopping (i.e. marketing everything in sight), he can't really complain about teams doing it now.
And his behaviour demonstrates precisely why there is room for FOTA. While the powers-that-be concentrate more on power-grabbing than improving the sport, someone will always need to remind them to re-focus on what matters and give them a good kick to ensure they get there.
I doubt this will be the flashpoint, but the drops are starting to wear away the stone again...
gah! i've just come back from shopping and was hoping it would be fixed by now. silly thing.

can you fathom the "moving the truck cabs out of the paddock thing"? i don't get it, nor do i get why the teams just did as they were told. {Comment #459}
It's Bernie trying little things to squash FOTA, since going in all guns blazing failed for the FIA...
There's a WRC rally this week and it is on tarmac, the first of that type this season. Kimi should be fast on asphalt..
I'm back!! Finally!!

I entered the VivaF1 prediction game and said pole would be 1m29s because that's 115% of last year, and that's the time gap FIA GT had between layouts. Don't let me down, F1 people.
