It's a momentous day today, as this will be the first post on Sidepodcast written wholely on the G1. A bit of an experiment in our mobile capabilities. However, there's plenty going on elsewhere:

  • Team Brawn are go, with an announcement, press release, website, shakedown and interview all in one day. It's really a big relief, mostly for the team, but also because the speculation is over. Hurrah!
  • Peter Windsor has spoken about the rapid name change from USF1 to USGPE. He sort of said it had always been part of the plan, as a mark of respect to the teams of yore. Really? It was always the plan to confuse everyone?
  • If you use the realtime doohickey, you may notice a new button. Give it a try and see what happens. If you get stuck, or find any bugs, let us know!

That'll do for now, I am getting RSI from the small keyboard. More practice is required. While I do that, I'll see you in the comments.

    BBC F1 news...

For the first few races, where the time difference means that we can have more red button streams, there will also be the chance to have the on-board camera feed full screen and a choice of television commentary, Radio 5 Live commentary or even a new CBBC commentary that is especially aimed at our younger audience. Details of this new commentary are not yet finalised, but we'll be able to tell you the details soon.

"Look boys and girls. That red car in the lead is a Ferrari. Can you spell 'Ferrari?' F-E-R-R..."

Test from Google Chrome - man it is fast compared to Firefox!

I had a go at using Chrome and Safari for a bit a couple months ago. Personally, I find Firefox > Safari > Chrome.

I just cant gel with it, I dont know why.

Im fine with the speed. She's got it where it counts - it made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs....

anyone watching the BBC preview thingy?

I think it's already been on the BBC website? It's a twenty minute feature (or so) on repeat.

  • Spikey07/03/2009 at 13:10

ah fair enough. I really should try to keep up :p

Still, I got to see Mansell and Senna in Spain again. Class pic :)

Greetings from the library computers once again. :(

  • Le Wombat du BOL07/03/2009 at 13:27

Aloha! Back from Jerez tests, was trying to work out what to do with all the pics. Click on my name to view the galleries. And a confirmation: 2009 cars look OK in real life. It's the angle that matters, the spectators in the grandstands are always above the cars, while professional photographers tend to take shots of the cars passing on the same level with them. I hope I'm making myself clear. I'm not particularly good at using special terms.

Happy for Brawn but would've preferred to see somebosy else in the 2nd car, maybe di Grassi... Paul di Resta? Given the obvious engine connection... Maybe next year?

Just a quick thought: the header could use 2009 RBR car with Vettel for a change. Yes? No?

It's ended now. It was basically all the same stuff on the website.

  • Dom07/03/2009 at 14:49

Is the entire preview show on the BBC’s F1 site?

It was put together with videos like the Hamilton interview and the Murray's top 5 video, which is all on the website.

  • Jackie07/03/2009 at 17:46

Funny, when I used to live in Southampton I used to call it cotton socks .. why? with my weird sense of humour Soton Docks became cotton socks

  • Lukeh07/03/2009 at 17:48

Hiya everyone. So happy to be home from work, long day. Also, I caused an argument about F1 in our staff room when someone said that people waste their lives on sundays watching boring stuff like F1. They came out with classic lines such as 'The car doesn't have a proper engine so they dont even drive it' and 'I bet I could drive an f1 car anyway' which was amusing, but several people stuck up for F1 which was nice :)

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 17:49

    Bless!

    We just found Ollie!

  • Jackie07/03/2009 at 17:49

    Hi Lukeh,

I thought the usual put-down was that it was more interesting to watch paint dry.

  • Lukeh07/03/2009 at 17:50

I thought the usual put-down was that it was more interesting to watch paint dry.

The guy who started the comments said the line the last time he watched f1 the 'red or white car was winning and everyone else was boring' which goes to show how well developed the argument was :D

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 18:10

Bit late now (sorry, went out) but if you come out of the big shopping centre into the high street, HMV is directly opposite - well, it was five years ago.. I have no idea if it's still there.

I love Peter dearly for what he and Ken has said the last few weeks, but I can't defend him on this. What he said was utter nonsense.

Funnily enough I was just about to mention this. I had noticed!

    His last comment:

    yes. life sucks.

If it weren't for you keeping us updated Christine, I'd be quite worried by now! ;)

  • RG07/03/2009 at 21:07

ah but how much money do you have in your wallet? :P

Actually quite a bit, I think around 40 quid.

    Why do I say things?

  • Dom07/03/2009 at 21:08

    Why do I say things?

You still owe us a YMCA. :P

    Hehehehe.

He's fine. Sulked yesterday but just busy today. Can't believe his last comment though, what a way to leave things :)

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:09

I also wondered if he had seen the bug I mentioned earlier.

  • RG07/03/2009 at 21:11

You still owe us a YMCA. :P

    I'm soooo dooooomed.

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:11

Good database question when was the last time he didn't comment for 24 hours?

  • Bassano Clapper07/03/2009 at 21:12

    I’m soooo dooooomed.

But there is a place you can go.... :)

  • RG07/03/2009 at 21:12

Good database question when was the last time he didn’t comment for 24 hours?

Hmm, nice question based on that for the panel, cheers Alex.

  • Bassano Clapper07/03/2009 at 21:12

    Good database question...

Does such a concept exist? ;)

  • RG07/03/2009 at 21:13

By the way, pitpass forums update (I've gave up complaining, I'm waiting to see how long it will take for them to activate the account now) is now at 2 days, an hour and 12 minutes

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 21:13

Good database question when was the last time he didn’t comment for 24 hours?

That IS a good question. Probably when we got married.

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:14

Good database question when was the last time he didn’t comment for 24 hours?

And when I say good I mean quite complicated!

    Aye, aye. Castleford won.

    Apart from that

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:22

Well I am a geek. It’s the kind of thing I like :)

    Mr C is pondering it.

By the way, pitpass forums update (I’ve gave up complaining, I’m waiting to see how long it will take for them to activate the account now) is now at 2 days, an hour and 12 minutes

When I joined, it didn't get activated until I wrote to them to ask why. I was told that they get lots of people posting spam so they were very cautious allowing new members id their username looked at all dodgy

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:25

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:27

Can't believe how well the doohicky has been doing just now. I'm being driven on country lanes with service dropping in and out. And it's behaving perfectly :)

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:29

    Mr C is pondering it.

    It's a complex little beastie :)

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:33

    It’s a complex little beastie :)

I would look at the table twice with different names. Where in both his name is the name and in one the id is higher than the other then max(max(table1.date)-max(table2.date)) or something like that.

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 21:36

I would look at the table twice with different names. Where in both his name is the name and in one the id is higher than the other then max(max(table1.date)-max(table2.date)) or something like that.

But then again I'm in the back of a car and I don't know wordpress so I may be being stupid.

Nope :P but I thought that if I sais what I actually said when I bit my lip "me" would have had to tell me off and break his 24 hour curfew.

But, "Are you a car horn" could be a good game .. we could play "What am I"

  • Jackie07/03/2009 at 21:47

Since it has gone quiet and Dan has left a game hanging I am going to start another. It came up briefly a couple of days ago but didn't take off.

You are having a dinner party and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 22:23

You are having a dinner party and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

    Franck!

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 22:25

    Franck!

Just the two of you or are you going to use your other choices?

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 22:25

Just the two of you or are you going to use your other choices?

Depends on the rules of the game :)

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 22:28

Depends on the rules of the game :)

The game is dinner. Apres-ski is your own affair

  • RG07/03/2009 at 22:29

You are having a dinner party and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

Robert Kubica and Fernando Alonso - Get a good game of poker going, some lively banter as well.

Nick Heidfeld - Won't make me feel the smallest there

Sebastian Vettel - Someone I think I will end up having a good chat to about everything

    and

Mr C - Well, he is a genius

  • Andy Taylor07/03/2009 at 22:29

The game is dinner. Apres-ski is your own affair

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/03/2009 at 22:33

    Rob and Lucas.

    She likes the accent...

  • Bassano Clapper07/03/2009 at 22:35

    Thank you Jackie

[fighting the jet lag but trying to stay awake]

  • RG07/03/2009 at 22:35

    She likes the accent…

    Who doesn't?

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 22:37

    She likes the accent…

Don't know what you mean. Just that he seems like a decent enough chap.

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 22:40

My first attempt was Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Eddie Jordan and Mario Andretti.

But I also want Murray Walker, Gilles Villeneuve, Sid Watkins, Juan-Manuel Fangio and Keke Rosberg.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/03/2009 at 22:41

My first attempt was Jackie Stewart, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Eddie Jordan and Mario Andretti.

    You gonna git fat boooy!

  • Andy Taylor07/03/2009 at 22:41

    My dinner list

If pizza is on the menu - Murray and Damon.

    Otherwise

    Stirling Moss

    Jackie Stewart

    Frank Williams

    Charlie Whiting

    Rubens Barrichello

  • Joe07/03/2009 at 22:41

You are having a dinner party and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

    Jenson Button

    Murray Walker

    Mark Webber

    Niki Lauda

    Ted Kravitz

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)07/03/2009 at 22:42

  • Jackie07/03/2009 at 22:42

But I also want Murray Walker, Gilles Villeneuve, Sid Watkins, Juan-Manuel Fangio and Keke Rosberg.

I aslo though of Fangio, Nuvolari, James Hunt .. it's so difficult

  • Andy Taylor07/03/2009 at 22:42

I aslo though of Fangio, Nuvolari, James Hunt .. it’s so difficult

I decided to choose people who are still able to attend.

  • Andy Taylor07/03/2009 at 22:43

You are having a Poker Night and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

Any driver who can't play poker, a marked deck and no limits.

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 22:43

You are having a Poker Night and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

That's risky. They are all a bit too fond of their money. Bernie, Max, Donnelly, Whiting and rigged deck seems like it could provide a great game.

  • RG07/03/2009 at 22:44

You are having a Poker Night and can have 5 people related to F1 as guests. Who are you going to have?

As I said before, Alonso and Kubica, I'm sure Vettel, Smedley and Heidfeld can play too.

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 22:44

I decided to choose people who are still able to attend.

I like the fantasy of having any choice regardless how improbable. I have Fangio as an option and he didn't speak English.

    Jenson,

    Jackie Stewart,

    Darren Heath,

    DC,

    Ross Brawn

Jackie Stewart? You want to be bored to sleep? All he does is moan and whine about everything. He's like Paul Stoddart, except Paul's awesome.

Jackie Stewart highlights the shortcomings of F1 and how it is run. Almost without exception he is right. I have never heard him whinge.

He was the guest of honour at a historic festival at Knockhill in 2007 and ever person he spoke to left with a smile. The guy worked his but off for hours to make sure everyone got photos, autographs, questions answered. I know it has become fashionable to have a go at him but the guy is fabulous.

Jackie goes on a 20 minute "rant" about anything from the FIA, to safety, Lewis, the weather etc. JV does the same actually, but JV sold a whopping 39 albums outside of America and Canada, so go him.

Jackie goes on a 20 minute “rant” about anything from the FIA, to safety

The reason Bernie has a sport that he can show at lunch time on a Sunday is Jackie Stewart. Jackie Stewart fought with the organisers, the circuits and the drivers to take F1 from being a blood sport where several drivers died every season to the point where death is rare. If he has something to say about safety it is worth listening to.

On the FIA he has pointed out the failings of Max and in general he is saying things that the majority of us think and say. Whereas most of the insiders keep their heads down and try not to annoy Bernie and Max JYS says what he thinks and we need more insiders to do that.

    Aaah, good ol’ sotton, used to live there many moons ago…my road was a dump…if you didn’t want to keep something but didn’t know what to do with it, you left it in your front garden…within an hour it was gone! {Comment #29}

Sounds like parts of every city I've ever visited. For example, Sheffield's equivalent is Frog Walk, Nottingham's equivalent is the city centre and Derby's appears to be Alvaeston, judging by the recent home refurbishment programme where a house developed there had the copper piping stolen from it twice in the space of three weeks...

  • Alianora La Canta08/03/2009 at 00:00

    Who ever looked at ikea and wondered if they sold meatballs? {Comment #34}

Someone learning to read using shopping catalogues? I can't see anyone who knows what Ikea does coming up with that idea...

Grand Canyon pics don't do it justice and the red rocks of Sedona at sunset made me wish I'd learned a bit more about the new camera before I left

There are a few pages of them. They were digitised from glass plates from Scott’s final polar expedition.

And there is a whole museum that you can visit as well, and if you are organised enough to make an appt. they will let you view other bits of the collection too :-)

    http://www.spri.cam.ac.uk/museum/

But go soon, as they are about to close for blooming ages for refurb :-( Its Cambridge Science fortnight over the next couple of weeks as well and lots of interesting things going on (like lectures on explosions with accompanying bangs :-S and music and all sorts)

  • Pat W08/03/2009 at 01:11

no worries, and no rush. what you have looks cool.

Well it looks about as good as Blogger and a non-designer can manage! I don't like the Google Ads though, as soon as I added them it made it look cluttered. I'll play about with the bigger player though, it should fit well at the top.

    what’s feedjit?

It tells me where visitors are viewing the site (albeit only very generally - which is good) and what sites they came from. So I just saw 5 visitors within 5 minutes from sidepodcast.com/realtime/. I only usually check it once a day.

The location is usually by city, which it gets wrong frequently, I know that from other blogs that use it. I don't care about that, I only want country info.

  • Pat W08/03/2009 at 01:15

    To expand on that...

I came at blogging from following IndyCar blogs after the merger last year. They were a better source of info than the racing news websites, so I've been commenting on those for almost a year. I started my blog in July and managed to get myself linked with those guys, so a lot of my traffic is American. I didn't know that until I put that little plugin, er, in.

  • Joe08/03/2009 at 01:16

I'm on Facebook checking to see which F1 teams are on there. I checked the guys you'd expect, like McLaren and Ferrari, and yep, they're there. Lou tells me Renault aren't though.

    Minardi and Super Aguri? Yep.

But get this. Lola are there too.......what the hell? AND they have more fans than Super Aguri.

Name teams that you think aren't on Facebook, for whatever reason. game time!

  • Pat W08/03/2009 at 01:17

My only concern was the 'spying' aspect... I figured that since it report my own location based on BT's location, not mine (i.e. it thinks I'm in Basingstoke or Winchester), it can't be that accurate and so isn't a concern.

  • me08/03/2009 at 01:17

    got ya.

good stuff re: clicks. we were discussing with ollie earlier, how to encourage bloggers to plug posts and sites without feeling bad about doing so. but also at the same time, avoiding turning the comments into simply a list of links.

it's a tough one to solve. must comment monday was a step in the right direction, but once the season starts, we struggle to keep it up.

ollie had some fine suggestions, but if anyone else fancies throwing ideas into the pot please do.

    got ya.

I should say that my traffic profile has changed radically since I started posting about BBC F1! Google really is your friend.

good stuff re: clicks. we were discussing with ollie earlier, how to encourage bloggers to plug posts and sites without feeling bad about doing so. but also at the same time, avoiding turning the comments into simply a list of links.

I don't think you can. Just look at Twitter from Monday to Friday. Weekends it's great because people basically live comment everything. Mon-Fri it's just links. Which is good in once sense because I've found some truly great stuff that way, and had my own stuff RT'd too (thx!) - but it overwhelms any conversation.

  • Pat W08/03/2009 at 01:26

But get this. Lola are there too…….what the hell? AND they have more fans than Super Aguri.

I can believe that a long-running sportscar constructor has more fans than a flash-in-the-pan F1 entry. I like Lola.

I should have said, it's for the actual F1 team, not the manufacturer, sorry.

    Virgin F1 - nope.

Gonda - Nope, though I didn't actually expect them to be on it for some reason.

Brabham - No for the team, but the man himself is there.

    Keep going!

    Toro Rosso - Yep

    Force India - Yes.

None in particular really, mainly ones that haven't been successful I suppose. Ones such as Minardi, who I am now an official fan of :D

we can brand the square player too. it doesn't have to be the elongated version, just the two examples happen to be.

we'll need a bigger logo from you, but that's the only difference.

Okay thanks. Is it possible to make the playlist appear on the square player? Maybe it would only have room for 'F1 Minute: 06-Mar-09' but that would be fine. I think that'd look pretty good. Don't worry if it isn't possible though! Just floating ideas.

I'm intrigued by this whole dinner party thing... going to have to go and think about it, lol.... (this is what happens when you go all day without turning on the 'puter until after most sane folk are going to sleep.... teehee)

As for IKEA... hmmm living a 20min walk from one is not good (especially when it makes for a cheap got-to-leave-house-and-walk-children because of the free coffee thing) although I can now enter, find item desired, and leave again within 20 mins if I have too lol...

And I do wonder who they will get to do a CBBC commentary... now a Cbeebies one and I'd be betting on that being Chris and Pui's new project; but on CBBC I'd have to put cash on either getting the awful Ed whatshisname or the most excellent Richard Hammond... but it will probably be someone from blue peter (rolls eyes) or that Holly from the links over the summer (as she has since popped up doing sport, and it turns out that she has a background in motorbikes or something from university).

classified info that. although i would admit to being in the uk

Oh, give me a break, me...the reason why you can say that you can admit to being in the the U.K. is that Bermuda has yet to be bumped up to its own separate country from its current status as a British Overseas Terrority...

Oopps did I just indirectly say that you guys are based in Bermuda ? Sorry Me....

Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost, Gilles Villenueve, Stirling Moss & Murray Walker

    Max

    Luca (di M)

    Ron

    The head of CVC

I thought about Flav or Frank (Williams) for the last slot.

How the hell do I add a place on the map? Although it's probably not worth it, it's really near to Castlebar in the west of Ireland which is already on the map, but I'd rather not say I live there when I don't. I clicked the Add thing and then I've no clue.

WTCC's European rounds usually have Formula Master, and there's the SEAT Eurocopa although with SEAT's cutbacks in racing I don't know if that's still going.

looks like a reduced calendar than usual, im glad its less MSV tracks though, usually they have loads of rounds at the MSV tracks and then don't go to other tracks as much.
