Each week that goes by, I am getting more and more proof that Thursdays are evil. However, it is now Friday so it is bound to be a good day. Here's what we've been talking about recently:

  • Honda are (almost certainly) saved! What I'm really interested in, apart from the fact that it looks like Nick Fry is sticking around, is the blue and red livery that is purported to be their chosen colours. We don't know the name of the team, but we know what colour they will be. Do blue and red even go together?
  • FOTA had some serious suggestions yesterday, with plenty of focus on the difference the sporting regulations can make to the spectacle, and how they need to be more accessible to the fans. If you haven't already, share your thoughts on the suggestions, whether they are enough, whether they'll work, and more importantly, whether they'll be accepted or not.
  • Don't forget that today is the last day you can sign up for the Batracer 1986 game. If you were signed up to the game already, you may need to re-sign to the new one, otherwise, you might want to join in the fun. The password is 'bourdais' and the game will be kicking off at some point today.

That should keep us going for the last day before the weekend. As ever, let us know if you're up to anything exciting once Friday is over, and while you do, I'll see you in the comments.

oh yes. problem is, it'll look like a red bull, or failing that, an str.

    sidepodspace update

NASA have stopped putting the space shuttle launch date back. They are now suggesting Wednesday as the likely date of the launch which is as close as we have been to a date in more than a month.

it will look nice whatever it is :)could it not be a lighter blue the the red bull though? and also if it's possibly going to be red and blue and an english team, could it be possible the livery will feature the union jack or something? although i suppose the would need some white in there somewhere.

So Brawn GP colours to be Black, Yellow and White.

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 00:45

Yellow, black and white are traditional Renault colours. Couldn't he dream up something a bit more original.

I hope it's not yellow and black, I may be sick if that's the case. The colours on the site, eugh. Although I also hoped Brawn wouldn't be in the team name v_v

Looking at Brawn's site I think we have another logo design competition.

  • Lukeh06/03/2009 at 01:00

I feel so sad reading the Honda F1 site, The two images on the left are the finest moments in Honda's run this time ou.t I know that seems like nothing to some people and like has been mentioned many times as to why us Honda/Brawn fans would like this team when they didnt get much success but moments like Jenson's win and Ruben's silverstone magic are just amazing memories now in Honda's short revival. Onto Brawn and the future now with JB and rubens and another team to love and follow no matter how bad or good they do, no matter what successes and problems occur :)

no i honestly wont, well atm i don't think i will. them having 3 points or even none is better than not being there. honestly i just want them to be there. and stay. and eeek....

I know you will care. You’ll care when it gets to round 17 and you’ve had 3 points or so, if even that. I’ll care too.

I personally will care more about the teams performance in 2010, theyve not had anywhere near the testing that anyone has because of this, or so we know, so this year im not expecting too much. I'm just over the moon that a solution has finally happened, we have 20 cars on the grid, and Brawn GP are around with JB and Rubens.

Really need to relax and chill... excited. Breath in.... breath out.

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 01:03

Going by the press release they have 6 days of testing scheduled before Melbourne. That should be more than enough for them to sort the car out provided the weather does no intervene.

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 01:04

Honda supporters seem to be an excitable bunch.

    That's great news!

I have a couple of questions though:

    1) Why is it BRAWN GP? Note the italics.

I'm not sure many people will actually go read that! Not after the Lawrence-Stewart fiasco 2 days ago.

That said, I'm not sure this is the best move for Brawn. Unless Mike and Ross are on the same wavelength technically, they will just end up clashing, I think.

It doesn't look all that bad, actually. The Williams winglets look a lot worse than that. But this will either not be used, or get banned altogether.

not sure really. it's been well received but wasn't what we had in mind when we started sidepodcast.

the reason for doing spc was we like short, snappy, well produced content and no-one else was doing that. f1 minute is a good example of how short and snappy christine can be.

i guess with the chat, there's nothing particularly exciting about making it. anyone can start a skype conference call, record it and make it available for download. as content creators, there's zero interest in making the show.

however, as f1 fans it's brilliant to have the discussions, and we really enjoy taking part in them.

so, umm, we don't really have plans to continue, but neither do we have plans not to continue. we do know we have a packed program for the next 6-8 weeks, so it's not something that needs consideration at the moment anyhow :)

  • Chris (Vampire)06/03/2009 at 09:57

Morning all.I've been thinking. In the latest F1 Racing, there is an interview with Force India. In the interview, they claim that they were pushed for time converting the new car to use Mercedes engines. As the deal was confirmed back in November, they have had 3 or 4 months to do so. Brawn GP have only just confirmed their Mercedes deal (although I suspect the deal was made a little while before the announcement) and I'm worried they won't have time to convert their car to match. If this is the case, they'll be the least reliable team on the grid!

P.s anyone know what time Batracer starts today?

We still need people to fill in slots at Benetton, Ligier, Minardi and AGS. So if we can find 4 people by 12pm then that would ideally be perfect. But I doubt it and far that 4 people will have to go it alone.

Regardless, thanks for the opportunity to call in sometimes, it is great to talk to anyone who likes F1, as it seems that these sort of people are few and far between in the 'outside world'!

I'm interested in the voicemail versus phone call debate. Personally I prefer listening to the calls than the voicemails of old when I listen to the shows in the podcast form. This is simply because people who aren't used to it were leaving really really really long voicemails. And on the calls Me or Christine can jump in and polish the output.

However, if instead you went to voicemails but with a limit of 90 seconds on the call then that might be something?

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 10:22

we may have to do a post about it, solicit some feedback. hadn't really considered it to be an either / or thing. but it's a good question.

However, if instead you went to voicemails but with a limit of 90 seconds on the call then that might be something?

the advantage of voicemails, is you can do a lot more with the in terms of production. see the megamix as a perfect example. the problem i guess, is the more calls we do, the less voicemails we get.

maybe we're need to keep things like megamix requests, prediction requests etc in the spotlight to encourage more of them.

I'm still slightly irritated that I got the hang of how the car setup system worked with just 2 practice runs left. It means it's not as good as how I'd like, but I'll just have to see how it goes in qualifying.

  • Scott Woodwiss - unhappy after not winning despite starting on pole :(06/03/2009 at 10:57

Meanwhile over in Race Pro land, I lost out on winning from pole again last night. Formula BMW race at Laguna Seca, started on pole by a mile but kept losing the car on the bumps in the corkscrew. Did so 3 times and lost the car twice at that final corner. Came 2nd again but I just couldn't believe it had happened again.

Still, 2 more races tomorrow and they've drawn up some odds for the WTCC race at Monza. I have evens against me which makes me 2nd favourite to win and I'm favourite to take pole and fastest lap. No pressure then.

There is a really fantastic Paul Graham article that’s been published just this week..

i love the idea that facebook killed tv. and the man is correct. we bitched about the autosport paper magazine for about 12 months before we finally gave up and stopped buying it. the reason? we can't share stories with everyone by copying and pasting a link. it requires re-keying quotes into doohickey, and that's just too much hassle.

the other day we couldn't share the webber interview on radio2 because it was bang in the middle of looong talk show. so rip it, trim it, upload it and share the permalink.

to me the winners of the future will be the companies that split their content into the smallest navigable segments and make them accessible to anyone from anywhere.

how much more useful would debrief be, if all stories covered in good week/bad week were accessible as individual posts?

at the moment, aside from doing a control+f on the transcript, it's tough to remember what was covered and when, let alone point someone back in the direction of it.

we have a plan though ;)

    Brawn GP have only just confirmed their Mercedes deal (although I suspect the deal was made a little while before the announcement) and I’m worried they won’t have time to convert their car to match. If this is the case, they’ll be the least reliable team on the grid! {Comment #133}

Force India opted to completely redesign their car in order to accomodate the new engine. Brawn GP could do a "cut-and-shut" job on their chassis - i.e. do the minimum changes necessary to accomodate the engine. In fact, given that they're testing today at Silverstone, that's surely already happened. The Jordan 191 is an example of a "cut-and-shut" modification that worked - the little bumps either side of the engine cover are where the team had to modify the car to accomodate Cosworths instead of the originally intended Judd engine.

They're getting nearly as many days of testing as Force India, so I wouldn't worry overmuch about reliability.

  • Maverick06/03/2009 at 11:47

    What the Honda is that horrible thing doing on the engine cover? {Comment #110}

I saw that yesterday and was wondering how the heck it was the McLaren that was blown in to the barriers and not the Red Bull with its mainsail.

  • Flibster06/03/2009 at 11:51

Hang on - McLaren are running a 4 element front wing now?

  • Alianora La Canta06/03/2009 at 11:59

Phew! Made it into the 1986 Sidepodcast BATRacer game just in time (having finally figured out how to get Kool Tools). I'm in Minardi, like I was last time.

we need to keep a list of all the newey inspired designs that make it onto other cars this year.

    that wing is one thing.

i'm betting yesterday's extended rear wing will be copied by all at some point too.

I am hoping it is because the livery will be 'launched' at some point. It's too plain to be a final livery, as even without sponsors it lacks the colour scheme or any design effects.

Lou, you wanna have a go at the livery?

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 12:31

  • Christine06/03/2009 at 12:39

Even if he fails, you know he tried.

That is pretty much the motto of Sidepodcast Towers :)

  • Alianora La Canta06/03/2009 at 12:46

how much more useful would debrief be, if all stories covered in good week/bad week were accessible as individual posts?

    at the moment, aside from doing a control+f on the transcript, it’s tough to remember what was covered and when, let alone point someone back in the direction of it. {Comment #158}

You could get some speech-to-text software (Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the most famous example, but there are several alternatives) and use it as you make the shows. Not only would that give you a reminder, but you could have the transcripts up with virtually no more time or effort than it took you to get the podcast up in the first place.

  • me06/03/2009 at 12:47

Not only would that give you a reminder, but you could have the transcripts up with virtually no more time or effort than it took you to get the podcast up in the first place.

    ooooh!

  • Alianora La Canta06/03/2009 at 12:50

To get the audio as well, you can put a little pause between each segment (to act as a marker) and then simply cut the podcast into pieces - or use the marker to manipulate the parts in any way necessary. When I was podcasting, I routinely did this to get around the fact that my only recording device (a PDA with a tiny internal memory and (then) no expansion card) could only record about three minutes of audio at a time.

  • me06/03/2009 at 12:52

To get the audio as well, you can put a little pause between each segment (to act as a marker) and then simply cut the podcast into pieces

splitting we can do. it's text-to-speech that is proving troublesome. was planning to tag each section, but i'll download dragon and have a play :)

I notice in the first Brawn pic Jenson is using tyres with lots of grooves in them. I wonder where they dredged them up from. Too many grooves to be last years tyres.

I can only assume Silverstone is so cold or the runs they are doing are so short that this is the only way they can keep them up to temp.

I am about to go away for a weekend to the home of a massive Schumacher fan (she is also my mother in law to be)

Am in the bar in Euston - have dropioed a picture :)

can we select a drink for you?

Absolutely! What would you like to choose?

  • me06/03/2009 at 17:47

Absolutely! What would you like to choose?

is there a menu? otherwise, maybe a babycham?

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 17:52

is there a menu? otherwise, maybe a babycham?

I don't see a babysham. There is a fruit & cider mixer called jaques which is the girlyist thing I can see ;)

There is a red jaques and a White jaques. Which is better?

  • me06/03/2009 at 17:57

There is a red jaques and a White jaques. Which is better?

well red jaques would be winfield, while white jaques would be bar.

i'd go with williams every time.

  • Joe06/03/2009 at 17:59

So what is the aim for Brawn GP for 2009?

I would assume reliability as the main. They could do without having a BAR 99-style season.

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 18:01

I have dropped the evidence! Is this a good time to mention I'm not a big fan of cider? ;)

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 18:15

Katheine prefers the sweeter raspberry based red one. And I prefer the peach based White one. But neither of us would order them again. The final piece of evidence is up now!

Okay we are on the Virgin Lady train to Liverpool Lime House departing at 18:38. We are only going as far as Stafford.

  • Dom06/03/2009 at 18:32

Haven’t seen him comment yet today, but if he doesn’t know, he;s in for a big surprise with all the pictures and the website :)

Totally didn't see this coming. :D As the announcment kept getting later and later, I was really starting the think the team would turn up in Melbourne with no plans and no idea where to start. Seeing the website and pictures and everything was so brilliant. Only just starting to realise all the speculation is finally over! :D

At least I've calmed down. My reaction on the other thread was quite subdued, actually. ;)

we'll use the any differences to evaluate just how far off the pace brawn gp might be this year.

  • RG06/03/2009 at 18:35

    Oivin guv's

just for the record… i blame steven.

And your meant to be the responsible one ;)

At least I’ve calmed down. My reaction on the other thread was quite subdued, actually.

Go mad, go mental, be happy. I go mad when Spurs score, so you go mad when your team gets saved, going mad is good for you in the long run.

  • Flibster06/03/2009 at 18:37

Also, and I mean nothing by this because we all love Rubens, but that is one hell of a combover.

Not only that - but look at the colour.

Is it a ginger combover? :D

    No high voltage signs.

Could be a pure flywheel system - no high voltage electricity to worry about.

will try and find a way to rip it to drop.io later.

    Working on it...

  • me06/03/2009 at 18:38

Yes I think my comments have gone in somewhere on those (boarding the train 1,2 and 3 of three). It's taken from the subject of the e-mail I think.

  • me06/03/2009 at 18:44

that was my plan. i can't capture audio and video at the same time though. so i'd have to resync.

we can transcribe the slides manually, if you can grab audio+visuals?

Our reserved seats have come in handy as they had to let epopls sit anywhere they like in first class because of overcrowding!

Luckily we are in the buffet car!

  • me06/03/2009 at 18:47

    Is that Sooty?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/03/2009 at 19:29

Just got home from after work drinks... can we make the underground chat a little later?

I saw Spa '95 discussed earlier - I remember that was the race that we came home early from our holiday to see it live because Rubens was on pole ... unfortunately not a fantastic race and typical of 1995 :-(

  • me06/03/2009 at 19:30

    Is that Sooty?

    so far:

    - sooty's ear

    - sweep's hand

    sidepodspace update.

Launch of the space shuttle Discovery will go ahead at 9:20pm EDT Wednesday 11th or 2:20am Thursday 12th here. NASA TV will have hours of coverage of the launch build up. Unless of course they delay the thing again.

  • me06/03/2009 at 19:37

we're gonna need a bigger pic to find the last one. think four is the best we've got :(

Remind us, what is this one doing?

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 19:39

Remind us, what is this one doing?

This one should have gone about two years ago. It is taking up the final solar panel and upgrading the power supply so they have enough power to house a permanent crew of 6.

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 19:40

It’s hard to tell perhaps but the guy has a beard in one but not in the other. He has his mouth open In both.

Oh yes. Someone has to take thesolar panels out and bolt them on. Then panic whn they don't unfurl properly. I will dig out the flightplan but I would expect 3 or 4 spacewalks.

So Steven, given a choice, and if there were no recording media available to watch the events later, which would you rather watch F1 GP or NASA launch

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 19:48

So Steven, given a choice, and if there were no recording media available to watch the events later, which would you rather watch F1 GP or NASA launch

  • Jackie06/03/2009 at 19:48

    :D

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 19:50

    Brilliant :)

I can't find the schedule but they have 4 spacewalks scheduled but only one and a quarter spacewalks worth of work that must be done on this flight. So if they run into problems they have time to sort them and if not they will pull forward work and do that.

So it will be the usual day on, day off for the spacewalks. The solar panel assembly when fully opened is 240 feet long so they take a bit of handling.

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 19:51

I have commandeered Katherine's iPhone. Mine has gone kaput!

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 19:52

For anyone up at stupid o'clock in the morning there is a launch on NASA TV in exactly 8 hours time. It is the Kepler mission which will search for earth like planets.

I can’t find the schedule but they have 4 spacewalks scheduled but only one and a quarter spacewalks worth of work that must be done on this flight. So if they run into problems they have time to sort them and if not they will pull forward work and do that.

They could get ahead of schedule? Does.Not.Compute.

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 19:53

Kat wonders why your site box says "you must enter a valid URL" if you don't put http://

She is a usability wonk ;)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)06/03/2009 at 19:54

Right guys, Shall I make Burritos or Pasta? I have to use a pack of mince but it's late and I am 'merry' - need food!

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 19:55

They could get ahead of schedule? Does.Not.Compute.

I think they mean they will spend two days trying to find any tools that have been left hanging around.

Kat wonders why your site box says “you must enter a valid URL” if you don’t put http://

without it, how does doohickey know if you're pointing to a web site or something else (like, i dunno, an ftp server or something)?

the protocol bit exists for a reason. however, i would concede the error message could be improved ;)

Merry sounds like a good plan .. I have some Bailey's in the fridge

  • Alex Andronov06/03/2009 at 20:00

    Kat says pasta

But then she thought she was talking to Me and Christine and wanted to suggest something different than Nachos ;)

  • Stuart C06/03/2009 at 20:01

Pasta, definitely. Manufacturing a burrito sounds too much like hard work when 'refreshed'...

  • me06/03/2009 at 20:01

But then she thought she was talking to Me and Christine and wanted to suggest something different than Nachos ;)

    cupcake?

there isn't really a simple answer. the problem is society at large has dropped http from marketing blurbs and now people assume that's the only protocol there is.

how many words have you written and how many left to go?

  • Andy Taylor06/03/2009 at 22:59

how many words have you written and how many left to go?

Perhaps we could all do a few lines each?

  • RG06/03/2009 at 22:59

how many words have you written and how many left to go?

We don't go about how many words you have to write at our school, its usually pages in size 10.

  • lou06/03/2009 at 22:59

how many words have you written and how many left to go?

there is no limet to it. it's a general question and you need to write as much about it as you can, have done 3 1/2 pages, shouldn't need to do much more.

  • Steven Roy06/03/2009 at 23:00

Perhaps we could all do a few lines each?

You can't get much more multi-personality than that.

    :D

problem is it’s on a case study we have been learning about. tis okay will trudge through it. i was like this when we had to do the 8 page Frued essay.

Think of that and say to yourself, 'You can do it, you will do it, I will ignore Dom, Steven Roy, Mr C and everyone else on sidepodcast because they aren't relevent, they haven't got monkies to what I need, and I will finish it.'

I go all dramatic post 11pm

  • lou06/03/2009 at 23:04

okay am going to focus, which means turning internet off :( so there are no distractions. hopefully this wont kill my internet... if i'm not back within a few hours you'll know my internet connection died ;)

Problem I think of having a drop down box in doohickey is that your going to get likeminded people who don't notice it automatically go for the top option.

We've noticed a couple of things over the last few days. Nothing major, but we'll have to keep our eyes peeled.

    Wine is helping :)

  • Pat W06/03/2009 at 23:57

Just catching up with a couple of days worth of posts and comments. I like that you're all so prolific but it takes a while to catch up....

    Wine is helping :)

I need wine too, nice red would be lovely, but I don't have any. :-(

Right, I need to read the FOTA thing properly instead of skimming it, and I haven't opened the dead tree Autosprot yet!

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 00:02

Haven't quite got into drinking it straight! And obviously with Pepsi being superior to Coke it is the mixer of choice.

At least a few. Then again with the cost cutting measures from FOTA and the FIA, we should have some money from Sidepodcast Panda Racing.

I know, but when it was said it was due to start today, I thought it meant we would get an extra 12 or 24 hours before quali, like in the 2008 game :)

    Nevermind though!

    are they using the gp track though? or just one of the smaller variations of the track? i think one of track variations comes without access to the pitlane… not sure though. {Comment #249}

That would be the southern (Stowe) layout of the circuit, which I believe can be used at the same time as the northern (Club) variation. If someone else got their booking in first, that may have been the only choice Brawn GP had.

That said, it's also the layout where camerapeople are least likely to be seen. So it's good if you want to keep stuff under wraps.

  • Alenyaa07/03/2009 at 01:21

I think the school leaves the punishment of us to lou's discretion in that case.

I couldn't access it for about 20 minutes. Just maanged to get back on a couple of minutes ago.

Still, if you don't know anything about it, that leaves mediatemple or something else.

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 01:54

The last thing I saw was Journeyer's post on the 86 season and I was watching videos of that. I just checked back here just after your post so I can't even say if the site was working for me or not.

  • Kathi07/03/2009 at 01:57

Maybe some kind of warning alarm?

I don't know anything about coding, but would it be possible to give all daily post comments (or all not daily post comments) a different background colour in the doohickey? So it's easy to see the comments are from different threads?

  • Dan Brunell07/03/2009 at 02:00

I cannot believe how terrible that Detroit track was. Out of all the cities in America, why did we have a race in Detroit and Phoenix? All I can say is bring back Long Beach.

  • Alianora La Canta07/03/2009 at 02:05

Going at a complete tangent, it looks like Vijay's gone on a shopping spree:

Long Beach would be a welcome addition. Generally I am not in favour of street races but I always liked Long Beach.

  • Dan Brunell07/03/2009 at 02:27

You know I've watched races forever, but I've never seen Bernie smile and fool around like in this video. It looked like people actually wanted him there.

Re 1986: I miss the metal bottoms with the sparks. I wish we had that still, especially in a place like Singapore.

I stopped watch the vid a while ago because I was doing something else. I never saw the point of banning titanium skid blocks. Who cares if the plank was staying in one piece because skid blocks were protecting it or because it wasn't hitting the ground.

If anyone is still around NASA are going to launch their Kepler telescope planet hunting thingamabob in 15 minutes.

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 04:02

Kepler launch went perfectly. We can forget about this mission now as it will be 4 or 5 years before they produce any good data although no doubt rumours and half truths will come out much earlier.

  • Steven Roy07/03/2009 at 04:05

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 10:03

Morning all! I like Kathi's idea of a different colour for the daily threads.

Say for example anything tagged as daily always has a blue background. The others take colours too in order that they appear to the user. So say you set the colour order as blue, red, green, yellow, purple, etc. Then you say blue is all of the different daily posts even if they are different days. Then you get a first comment on a non daily post. That gets assigned red, and all subsequent posts in that colour have red backgrounds. Then when the first comment from another new thread arrives it gets green and all comments on the same thread get green.

The strange thing will be that the colours won't match between different computers because it will depend on when you started your doohicky. But it seems pretty cool to me.

  • Alex Andronov07/03/2009 at 10:04

Also... There seems to be a new button... How very exciting :)

  • Christine07/03/2009 at 10:16

Morning all! I like Kathi’s idea of a different colour for the daily threads.

It is a good idea. not sure having a rainbow of colours would enhance the user experience but maybe just highlighting the daily post comments wouldhelp.
