Today is the seventh day of the seventh month, and things are looking up in terms of Formula 1 news. Teams and drivers are starting to look forward to Germany, and in that case, so should we:

  • Ross Brawn has admitted that finishing third and sixth at Silverstone was not really good enough for the team and they are hoping to bring some more updates to the car to take them back to their winning ways. I wonder at what point we stop saying - who would have thought finishing third wouldn't be good enough for them?
  • Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso has admitted that the Nurburgring isn't the most exciting track on this year's calendar, but he says the circuit has a little bit of everything so it could be a good race. Also, it will be Piquet's first F1 race there as we were at Hockenheim in 2008, so what kind of chaos can he cause?
  • Although the Red Bull team are Austrian, they are based not far from Silverstone so for Vettel, it is like going from one home turf to another. The German is looking forward to racing in front of the home crowd and says it gives him even more motivation to do well.

That'll do it for now. We're starting to see pictures uploaded from the weekend's excitement at Goodwood, so please feel free to post your links if you've got some to share with us. I'll see you in the comments.

Maybe Sebastian will get the feeling he wanted of giving a home crowd what it desired :)

Mostly Goodwood. Some purchasing of old F1 cars. Usual stuff.

by the way, the motorsports reporting outlets in the US are up in arms about what Bernie said. Marge Schott, the owner of the Cincinati Reds MLB team, a few years ago was quoted as saying, "At least Hitler made the trains run on time." MLB forced her to sell the team. what is the reaction to what Bernie said in Europe. By the way, I understand most people regard him as a senile rich [email protected]#d

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 01:22

Bernie has apologised for his Hitler remarks. Apparently Hitler wasn't really a dictator and Bernie's Jewish mates have decided he is more Jewish than them. This clown is unbelievable.

    That was good timing.

I can almost believe that bit.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 01:26

I think bernie is kind of expected to say silly things, to be honest as he is jewish himself, most people have been thinking it was a dig at max and his antics.

The mayor of the hockenheim region cancelled a meeting, it might all blow up at the German GP, but who knows, he will probably organise a firework display to cover himself before that.

He apologised... It probably helped that a lot of people were distracted by goodwood this weekend

  • me07/07/2009 at 01:26

"What I regret is people who have taken this the wrong way and have been offended"

how else could it have been taken?

"What I regret is people who have taken this the wrong way and have been offended"

I would love him to answer that question but you just know he would say something stupid like he wasn't suggesting Max invade Poland.

"What I regret is people who have taken this the wrong way and have been offended"

I think it was supposed to be: i am going to mention hitler, Max has a Nazi past... everyone mention that.

Unfortunately he didn't get the right journalist

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 01:28

Bernie Comedy is a genre of its own

roger that. Right about Bernie being his genre. A short little guy spouting bizzare stuff

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 01:31

He was head of the British Union of Facists. His parents were married in a house belonging to the Nazi propaganda minister Josef Goebbels with Hitler in attendance. His aunt was Hitler's mistress at that start of the war and unbelievably according to the family history she was conceived in a town called Swastika in Canada.

    You couldn't make it up.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 01:33

    You couldn't make it up.

When you pile it up like that, its pretty miraculous how well he has done for himself.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 01:34

Max's mother and her sisters including that aunt were Winston Chaurchill's cousins so when her cousin declared war on her boyfriend she went into a park in Munich and shot herself in the head. Of course that was never going to be fatal for a member of that family and she was repatriated to England and spent the next 6 months in a rural cottage in Yorkshire that was eun as a maternity home. Some locals say she had Hitler's baby.

I saw him drive in his pomp. If you were in a forest watching a rally you never knew who was coming next except when it was Ari. YOu could hear the cheers a mile away through the trees.

He is universally popular everywhere. Bear in mind his co-driver was David Richards who has a lot of clout in the middle east and Bin Dulayem claims to have put enough votes behind Max to keep him in the job.

This one is in the Isle of Man. The car is not one of the modern 4 wheel drive, electric gizmos cars. This is front engine, rear wheel drive as it is meant to be. Yes the road really is as narrow as it looks and yes he he really is going that fast.

Because Japan needs more decent circuits and Fuji was OK - I mean, it's no Suzuka but it's still decent!

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso has admitted that the Nurburgring isn’t the most exciting track on this year’s calendar, but he says the circuit has a little bit of everything so it could be a good race.

Last time there was a race there it rained a few drivers went off a turn one and Hamilton used a crane to get back on the track. There was also the Spyker leading the field until it was red flagged. Then Alonso passed Massa in the closing laps for the victory and the two of them had some heated words before the podium. So maybe the track a non exciting track can produce some great entertainment ;)

A few sunny spells in practice while it appears that neither the Brawn or the Red Bull is fast enough, turning to dull and overcast during the race when one driver runs away with the race?

Couple more facts about the 2007 race, Michael Schumacher presented the constructors cup to McLaren boss Ron Dennis. This race beat the record for number of pitstops in a race, there were 75 pitstops during the race.

Just thinking about the Fuji thing ... will there be even more rumours of Toyota pulling out of F1 now?

that pullout saves them some money, so perhaps they can afford racing now :-)

This one is in the Isle of Man. The car is not one of the modern 4 wheel drive, electric gizmos cars. This is front engine, rear wheel drive as it is meant to be. Yes the road really is as narrow as it looks and yes he he really is going that fast.

that is the man for the job. awesome.

which is basically saying; "LOOK!!! LOOK!!! WE'VE USED AN ACTUAL QUOTE!!!!! but just so you don't feel like things have changed, heres some made up ones too!!"

Artist Suren Seneviratne, 22, was waiting his turn on Monday, dressed in a black-and-white costume with fuzzy ears.

"I'm meant to be a panda," he said. "My girlfriend made it for me."

Seneviratne said he was highlighting the plight of endangered species - "and actually, I just like pandas."

You need public support from 22 cabinet nominees, are there that many people in the FIA Brave enough and senior enough to do so?

  • Journeyer07/07/2009 at 13:48

You need public support from 22 cabinet nominees, are there that many people in the FIA Brave enough and senior enough to do so?

    AUTOSPORT says:

The original aim of the cabinet system was to ensure that wild card candidates could not put themselves forward and hope to capitalise on merely a negative vote for the current president.

I think they mean, "to ensure that Max stays in power." I think Vatanen can get 22 nominees - he just needs to approach the AAA-led anti-Max group in the FIA.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 14:08

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 16:50

Afternoon everyone... Bit of a deluge here... I'm guessing the poor woman on the plinth is getting a bit wet.

Are they still doing that? I thought it would last a day and then be like david blane with people throwing stuff at the poor person stuck up there for an hour

I would just rather the great challenger to Mosley was someone i thought would be reliably independent

True, but given the quality of people in this sport, Vatanen is way up there on the scale.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:06

True, but given the quality of people in this sport, Vatanen is way up there on the scale.

Maybe, but think i would prefer Bin Suleyam

  • Journeyer07/07/2009 at 17:07

Maybe, but think i would prefer Bin Suleyam

But isn't he even closer to Max than Vatanen is?

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:09

But isn't he even closer to Max than Vatanen is?

    Im more worried about Todt...

But Bin Suleyam just used the max scenario to build himself a support base and get him to the top of the FIA far quicker than he would otherwise be able to do

  • Journeyer07/07/2009 at 17:11

    Im more worried about Todt...

Who in turn is connected to Max. Given that Vatanen is challenging Max, I don't think he'd be on the same side as Todt.

But Bin Sulayem just used the max scenario to build himself a support base and get him to the top of the FIA far quicker than he would otherwise be able to do

I guess, but had he not done that, it would've been a much closer deal if Max would've hung on or not.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:15

I guess, but had he not done that, it would've been a much closer deal if Max would've hung on or not.

    Max would have gone.

But Bin suleyham didnt have the cv or profile to challenge then, who knows if he does now, but maybe in the future.

But the main fear i have about Todt is that his vision of motorsport is worse than max's.

  • Alison07/07/2009 at 17:18

FIA say FOTA cant decide new rules on there own, need universal approval.

I've had more than enough for this season, thank you very much. :P

FIA say FOTA cant decide new rules on there own, need universal approval.

That makes sense - that would explain why FOTA invited the 3 new teams as well.

Since Manor appear to be Donnelly's puppet, does that give Max a veto?

    Possibly, but hopefully not.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:38

    Evening all

Joe makes it sound like Ari Vatanen is worryingly close to Todt, and has a history of being involved in team orders :(

Team orders have always beem part of the sport. It is only in the last ten years that Max has made them sound like something immoral. Vatanen may have been close to Todt when they were in the same team but that doesn't mean he is politically close to him. It should also be remembered that running the Peugeot raly team was Todt's first real job after retiring as a co-driver so they competed against each other for several years so it is no great surprise that they knew each other well.

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 17:38

FIA say FOTA cant decide new rules on there own, need universal approval.

Why haven't Williams and FI been unsuspended yet anyways?

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:39

In the FIA, is there such a thing as a clean candidate? I don't think so.

Vatanen is not an FIA insider.

  • Journeyer07/07/2009 at 17:39

Vatanen is not an FIA insider.

    I meant F1 politics in general. :)

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:40

I have nothing against tem orders, but when you use them like todt did to make a mockery of the sport, they do become immoral.

I dont think the FIA can risk a president that close to Todt

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:40

Maybe, but think i would prefer Bin Suleyam

    Really? Why?

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:41

But Bin Suleyam just used the max scenario to build himself a support base and get him to the top of the FIA far quicker than he would otherwise be able to do

Bin SUlayem has a strong power base in the middle east. He was always going to be an important wheel in the FIA

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:41

Are you sure you're rid of max then??

    No

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:42

    Really? Why?

He is a nice guy ;)

Seriously i think he about as independent a candidate as we can hope for. He doesnt really have significant ties to any major stakeholder in motorsport, and mainly i cant see him being too active, letting everything run like it should.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:45

I have nothing against tem orders, but when you use them like todt did to make a mockery of the sport, they do become immoral.

They were always used like that until Max objected to McLaren applying them in Jerez 1997 and Melbourne 1998. Until that point any team could do what they wanted with their drivers.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:45

Bin SUlayem has a strong power base in the middle east. He was always going to be an important wheel in the FIA

He hasnt been active in the associations for all that long though, i think he was still competing untill 03'-04'

He is from an important family hough, which gives him a lot of influence in the region

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:46

Seriously i think he about as independent a candidate as we can hope for. He doesnt really have significant ties to any major stakeholder in motorsport, and mainly i cant see him being too active, letting everything run like it should.

I think he would be very active. He has built himself into a strong position be being very visible not by being the power behind anyone else.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 17:46

They were always used like that until Max objected to McLaren applying them in Jerez 1997 and Melbourne 1998. Until that point any team could do what they wanted with their drivers.

So making a guy stop his car on the line for no apparent reason so his team mate can win with no championship at stake isnt mocking the sport?

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:47

He hasnt been active in the associations for all that long though, i think he was still competing untill 03'-04'

Even when he was competing he was head of the local association and involved in regional FIA politics.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 17:55

So making a guy stop his car on the line for no apparent reason so his team mate can win with no championship at stake isnt mocking the sport?

Like anything else there are two sides to any story. One is that the sport is entertainment and the fans are the most important part of it and therefore racing must be totally open. The other is that it is a sport and winning is the most important thing and therefore the person in charge of the team has the right to use the resources at their disposal in the way they see fit to get the best result they can.

If I was Jean Todt and I had gone to the Peugeot board and convinced them to design and build a car to win the Dakar and to build a team around it. I had then convinced them at great expense to hire two magnificent drivers and raised the sponsorship necessary to finance the operation. Why would I let the two drivers race each other when they are pushing so hard that one of them has already been on his roof? My aim from the start of the project would be to finish 1-2 so with that assured so long as no-one took too many risks why should I risk that result? Achieving that result would also create my reputation as a strong organiser and team manager and lay the foundations of the next 20 years of my career. Why would I care if th drivers had fun or the fans were entertained?

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 18:00

I Achieving that result would also create my reputation as a strong organiser and team manager and lay the foundations of the next 20 years of my career. Why would I care if th drivers had fun or the fans were entertained?

Thats a great phillosophy for a racer, but its not for someone who wants to run the FIA.

I cant see what someone like that would add, in fact it could well destroy it all.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 18:07

I don't trust anyone with my espresso machine..

Perhaps you should give the assistant the manual as 'homework'

Wouldn't work - it's more about feel than reading the manual. I haven't read it yet. :D

Just ordered the screens for the new office. 1x1080p 42" LCD, 1x50" 1080P Plasma, 4x24" LCD's

    LCD for monitoring

Plasma for - errrr... anything else. ;)

Little LCD's for the 2 new desktops

Now to order the desktops, desks, chairs, broadband, 2nd broadband line, SkyHD, alarm system, CCTV and arrange a service for the aircon. :D

This is the sort of place i need to "work" ;)

  • Flibster07/07/2009 at 18:32

& Sky HD? This is an office?

This is the sort of place i need to "work" ;)

The 42" will be used to monitor all the servers.

Each of the 2 desktops will have 2x24" screens and the 50" will be used for whatever we want.

SkyHD is only going to be used for the news... we get busy in times of crisis. Movie package won't be used at all. Honest....

Oooh, need to order some servers.... I need to duplicate the hardware here and setup a seamless switchover.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 18:55

Ari is a great guy. You won;t find a bad word written about him anywhere ever. The closest you will find to something negative is people saying he was crazy when he drove just as they said about Colin McRae and Gilles Villeneuve.

It's interesting that he says the test ban makes experience much more important for teams. Eventually, they'll run out of drivers with experience.

Webber did the same, he just disappeared instantly when in the garage twice.

There is absolutely no reason why drivers can't compete into their 40s. Itis all the travel and testing and sponsor stuff that tyres them out and gives them more hassle than pleasure that makes them quit earlier.

Villeneuve has had a couple of years off and now the cars will suit him. Get him back in a car and doing what he does best.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 19:39

None of that stuff has changed though?

Yes but he has had a break from it so he will be not be worn down by it. It's like when Lauda quit and built an airline up for a couple of years. What he was doing must have been massively stressful but he came back good as new and won another championship. Same with Prost when he had his year out.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 19:42

    drive slowly?

That is unfair. He is an incredibly good driver he just made a stuupid decision getting involved with the whole BAR thing. I think he did that for all the wrong reasons. He saw what Schumacher was doing with Ferrari and thought he could do the same and his father had talked about setting up his own team so that was in his mind too.

  • me07/07/2009 at 19:45

    That is unfair.

i saw him drive a bar slowly, a renault slowly and bmw slowly. he may have driven a williams quite fast, but the car was dominating the field at the time.

i saw him drive a bar slowly, a renault slowly and bmw slowly. he may have driven a williams quite fast, but the car was dominating the field at the time.

His record speaks for itself. He went through some bad times in some bad teams but he has won the Indy 500 the CART championship and the F1 championship. The guy is a great driver. He just needs things done his own peculiar way and needs the technical director to listen to him.

  • me07/07/2009 at 19:54

    Not in the slightest.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 19:59

don't tell me, he's not as adaptable as other drivers? i don't rate him, and i'd rather he didn't return.

He has a very wierd set up inside the car which he and Patrick Head fought about for ages before Head would allow the team to set up the car the way he wanted it. The same thing happened at other teams too. He uses a really short travel throttle pedal and other oddities. The thing is though as soon as the team stopped arguing and gave him what h needed he was instantly faster.

i can't actually see this being a remote possibility anyhow though, can you?

I can see him coming back. He argued against grooved tyres and that whole philosophy of car worked against him. He sees F1 as unfinished business and now we have slicks and marginally reduced aero the cars should suit him a lot more.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 19:59

don't tell me, he's not as adaptable as other drivers? i don't rate him, and i'd rather he didn't return.

I want to know where all these masively adaptable drivers are. Where and when were there dozens of adaptable drivers?

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:00

    Where could he go?

There are 6 new cars on the grid. I would have thought that he was tailor made for USF1.

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 20:03

I want to know where all these masively adaptable drivers are. Where and when were there dozens of adaptable drivers?

i don't understand when everyone suddenly became so needy?

there was talk two years ago(?) about drivers needing to adapt to new tyre regs and fernando said it took him about 6 months to get used to things, and kubica was the same.

but they did adapt. they had to change their style and work with what they had, but they still made the most of it.

that's two i can recall off the top of my head. there are plenty more. when was the last time webber said the car didn't suit his style? or vettel?

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:05

If it's any consolation to steven's argument, I would like him to return because when I was young, his helmet reminded me of neopolitan ice cream

    :)

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:09

i don't understand when everyone suddenly became so needy?

Drivers have always needed cars to handle a particular way. At any one time there ae maybe at best two drivers who can adapt to anything. Most of the time there are not even that many.

there was talk two years ago(?) about drivers needing to adapt to new tyre regs and fernando said it took him about 6 months to get used to things, and kubica was the same.

They adapted but they did not change from understeer to oversteer or anything extreme they simply went from extreme understeer to milder understeer.

that's two i can recall off the top of my head. there are plenty more. when was the last time webber said the car didn't suit his style? or vettel?

When was the last time either of them said anythig publically about the handling of the car? Most drivers don't discuss these thing in public.

  • Scott in Italy in France07/07/2009 at 20:11

There are 6 new cars on the grid. I would have thought that he was tailor made for USF1.

he's canadian ;) Given I've been not in the f1 world lately, is there a more serious cause for this discussion or has he just been hanging around again?

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 20:13

he's canadian ;) Given I've been not in the f1 world lately, is there a more serious cause for this discussion or has he just been hanging around again?

He's been appearing at GP's more and more and slowly hinting that he wants to return, now he's just come out and said it straight to everyone so we can assume now he's actually serious about it.

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:14

Drivers have always needed cars to handle a particular way. At any one time there ae maybe at best two drivers who can adapt to anything. Most of the time there are not even that many.

i don't see why it has to be such a problem?

the car understeers a bit. okay. once the driver has figured this out... drive around it.

why is it that a driver who favours a certain style early in his career can suddenly be excused for doing badly, when he gets a car that handles differently?

he's meant to be the best in the world, so either help fix the problem, or driver better.

you think kimi can just fold his arms now and say... well, that ferrari isn't quite ideal for my needs, 6th it'll have to be. $40m please.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:14

he's canadian ;) Given I've been not in the f1 world lately, is there a more serious cause for this discussion or has he just been hanging around again?

He visited the paddock at Silverstone and spoke to quite a few teams. He may be Canadian but he has a high profile in America and he has an F1 pedigree. As far as I can see he is their ideal choice.

  • Scott in Italy in France07/07/2009 at 20:14

i thought he'd pretty much said that at monaco. at least he'S blunt about it now. obviously the people he was talking to said "no" and now he's having to advertise

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 20:14

He's been appearing at GP's more and more and slowly hinting that he wants to return, now he's just come out and said it straight to everyone so we can assume now he's actually serious about it.

Another asset he would have is being able to test at the end of the season when the youngsters are supposed to have a go. He is one of the few experienced guys who would be able to do that.

    Pay negotiation

Sound out to see if there is any other demand to get more money?

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 20:17

Promote the new album I made for him

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:21

i don't see why it has to be such a problem?

OK. Change you dignature to something entirely different and repeat the new signature exactly 72 times and use the hand you don't normally write with. And the new signature has to be neat, legible etc. It can't be done. Some people can do it but they are few and far between.

You have to look at what is involved in driving a car on the limit. Someone like Raikkonen has tuned his brain to interpret the signals from the semi-circular canals in his ears as the rear of the car slides and translate them into movements od his hands and feet to correct the car.

He has to work with the team to get the car to do what he wants it to do. We have no reason to believe that is not exactly what he is doing.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:21

    signature not dignature

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:23

if usf1 were even remotely interested, why would he have to go public like this?

To get information from other teams. To assess his value. USF1despite their early launch have not exactly been making public progress. To me that is the natural fit for them but maybe he is replacing Kimi at Ferrari. He would be cheaper than Alonso.

  • Christine07/07/2009 at 20:24

OK. Change you dignature to something entirely different and repeat the new signature exactly 72 times and use the hand you don't normally write with. And the new signature has to be neat, legible etc. It can't be done. Some people can do it but they are few and far between.

I think if I was being paid 40 million, I could learn to be ambidextrous.

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:25

He has to work with the team to get the car to do what he wants it to do. We have no reason to believe that is not exactly what he is doing.

we can see that with 18 months, and with a brand new chassis under him, massa is still finishing ahead.

i bought into what you were suggesting at the end of '08. and figured if it were true (and with ferrari saying kimi would be getting a lot of off-season attention), that the roles within the team would be reversed this year.

    they haven't.

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:26

I think if I was being paid 40 million, I could learn to be ambidextrous.

i know that i would be seen to be trying as hard as humanly possible.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:26

I think if I was being paid 40 million, I could learn to be ambidextrous.

You can't just choose to be ambidextrous. Some people are but most of us could never be. There was a time when all left handed children were force to use their right hands in school. They didn't become abidextrous. A lot of them became psychologically disturbed.

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 20:27

I think if I was being paid 40 million, I could learn to be ambidextrous.

I agree. Every time you get into a different road car you have to adapt to the controls, power and brakes, clutch position etc. Why is it so different for a race car?

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:27

He would be cheaper than Alonso.

but slower and more baggy ;)

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 20:27

I agree. Every time you get into a different road car you have to adapt to the controls, power and brakes, clutch position etc. Why is it so different for a race car?

Because there are about 400 more variables!

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 20:28

Because there are about 400 more variables!

Also you are not just trying to drive the car, you are trying to take it to the absolute limit

  • Christine07/07/2009 at 20:29

Also you are not just trying to drive the car, you are trying to take it to the absolute limit

But that is why they are the best, isn't it?

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 20:29

Because there are about 400 more variables!

But at the end of the day it's still a car.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:30

i know that i would be seen to be trying as hard as humanly possible.

He may well be doing that but it isn't working.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:30

I agree. Every time you get into a different road car you have to adapt to the controls, power and brakes, clutch position etc. Why is it so different for a race car?

Because you are not pushing at the limit of adhesion in every corner. Driving a road car bears no relation to driving a race car.

  • Chris_Humphreys07/07/2009 at 20:31

Thanks Christine for the brill mini series, loved it! As I have only started watching F1 from 2007 onwards I was not aware of when all the safety regs were introducted!

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 20:32

But that is why they are the best, isn't it?

I think its a bit like being the words best sprinter, then being asked to do the long jump.

Some people can do both in credibly well, some cant.

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:33

He may well be doing that but it isn't working.

i have concluded from this conversation that yuji ide was probably a very brilliant racing driver, who was given a car that simply did not suit him.

i therefore wish to take back any and all criticism i ever levelled at him, clearly i wasn't seeing the bigger picture. sorry yuj.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:34

But at the end of the day it's still a car.

No it is not. You get in a car and drive to speed limits and never get close to the limit of what the car can do. If you took your car out and drove it as fast as you could make it go round any route the odds are you would crash very quickly. These guys are not only making the car corner absolutely on the limit of its capabilities but they care competing against 19 others doing exactly the same thing and they are doing it in a car that will pull 4 times the G force your road car is capable of.

  • Scott Woodwiss07/07/2009 at 20:35

If I may break up the current topic for a sec, just flicking through Lukeh's pics of Goodwood on FB and this one caught my attention:

Now, who does that look like Mario is talking to?... ;)

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:35

I think its a bit like being the words best sprinter, then being asked to do the long jump.

    it's not though.

it's like saying, you are the worlds best sprinter and now you have to try running in different shoes.

you can still run the 100m. you can still run in a straight line. it's just there's a different brand name on your soles.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:36

i have concluded from this conversation that yuji ide was probably a very brilliant racing driver, who was given a car that simply did not suit him.

You have no basis for that. There is nothing in his history to say that he was any good. Villeneuve has a track record of winning major championships in different classes therefore he was either very lucky to be in the best car in all of them and have useless team mates or he is a good driver.

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:37

    i say lucky.

sorry. but in the fastest car he was the fastest driver (except for when hill beat him in the same machinery). in other machinery he was at best, average.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:38

it's like saying, you are the worlds best sprinter and now you have to try running in different shoes.

No its not. The world's best sprinter is that because of his muscles and his training not because of his shoes. The shoes contribute almost none of the speed and the difference between one shoe and another is absolutely minimal.

  • Scott Woodwiss07/07/2009 at 20:39

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 20:46

montoya did well in cart too didn't he? so?

Well so did Bourdais... but thats another matter.

Jaques did win the world title though, and his car didnt appear to be massively better than Schumacher's

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 20:46

montoya did well in cart too didn't he? so?

So he is a quick driver. Montoya's problem was Jan Magnussen syndrome. He had all the speed in the world but didn't have the other things necessary to be a success in F1.

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 20:46

Well so did Bourdais... but thats another matter.

Montoya and JV raced against talented fields, Bourdais only had to worry about Tracy.

  • me07/07/2009 at 20:46

interestingly, i didn't want jacques to come back to f1 ten minutes ago, because i think he's a waste of space. now i really want him to come back, to prove it once and for all.

a return for jacques would be a disaster on a scale not seen since... well, the last time jacques made a comeback. but now i'm quite looking forward to it.

Shouldn't the name suit the format rather than deciding a name first

I think Alianora made a comment about being unable to cook anything. Seems to be a common failing round here probably due to no-one having invented a food preparation device that can be run from a keyboard.

  • me07/07/2009 at 21:09

I think Alianora made a comment about being unable to cook anything. Seems to be a common failing round here probably due to no-one having invented a food preparation device that can be run from a keyboard.

i'll put it on the list.

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 21:10

true enough. keep the ideas coming though.

I'd envision it as being like a panel but with longer answers and much more open answers - as long as there is a Dimbleby-figure to moderate and keep within the chosen topic. Not time restricting the answers, allow them to speak but also to shut them up if they've been dominating.

Allow 8-10 mins per topic. 4 topics per show and a break or two during the recording. About one hour less the edits.

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 21:11

Clearly, The C's started off with Sidepodcast and made it around that.

That may be true, but a podcast can use pretty much any format you like.

With the amount of sexual tension in Torchwood, you're probably right.

I like Torchwood but I'm sure it's just RTD unleashing everything he wishes he could've attempted in Doctor Who concerning swearing and other stuff. And it's SO WELSH!!!!

Which is a strange observation coming from myself I know but my god it's just welsher than wales. Still good viewing though :P

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 21:44

Ive tried to watch Dr Who and Torchwood. I just cant get into it.

Cardiff Bay has Techniquest though. I'll fight off John barrowman and aliens to go to techniquest anyday!!!

I don't know why I visit cardiff. it gets so many aliens visiting.

Last time I was there, the Torchwood entrance was all padlocked up. I have to say I was quite worried by this.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast07/07/2009 at 21:51

    Geordie Cap'n Jack??

    Evening all

Nah, that would mean I'd get lots of aliens. And that would require running around a lot screaming your head off. Not good for your health.

There's a risk that aliens could kill you, but meh.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 21:51

Next Generation. TOS is badly showing its age now

DS9 never made any sense to me. It's called Star Trek not Star Park here and see what happens.

  • me07/07/2009 at 21:53

Yet again Steven is the voice of reason.

he's not the voice of reason, he's a very naughty boy.

Hehe, I'll help. I'd be good with Barrowman ;)

Just say to him 'BBC are starting a new reality show and need a host' and he'll be gone in a hurry. Not that it'd be your objective but still, if a problem ever occurs, that's the best way out of it! :P

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 21:53

Uh oh. Can't we just agree that Next Generation is the best Star Trek? :)

TNG and Voyager are about the same level for me

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 21:53

DS9 never made any sense to me. It's called Star Trek not Star Park here and see what happens.

Which was "not much" if I remember correctly.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 21:54

Hehe that would work, but I prefer my objective (whatever that might be :P)

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 21:54

TNG and Voyager are about the same level for me

But Voyager's Captain had an annoying voice. The Doctor (wonder where they got the name from) was good though.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 21:56

Which was "not much" if I remember correctly.

There was all that mystical Sisko rubbish and the security guy who lived in a bucket. I never understood how they could have so many problems when the head of security was a shape shifter.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast07/07/2009 at 21:56

Hehe that would work, but I prefer my objective (whatever that might be :P)

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 21:56

DS9 never made any sense to me. It's called Star Trek not Star Park here and see what happens.

What! It had story arcs, it had charichter depth, It had everything a tv series ever needed and so much more!

Wars, Crooks, Spys, Klingons, War Criminals & Terrorists.

I love all the other Treks, but DS9 is the only one which poses real moral questions, and the drama was much better because of it.

  • James07/07/2009 at 21:56

But Voyager's Captain had an annoying voice. The Doctor (wonder where they got the name from) was good though.

Voyager is the only one I'll watch now. TOS looks bad now, TNG never intrested me that much. DS9 was good one time through and the less said about Enterprise the better :P

(The Doctor from Voyager was in another of my fav shows, Stargate :D)

  • me07/07/2009 at 21:57

Wars, Crooks, Spys, Klingons, War Criminals & Terrorists.

  • James07/07/2009 at 21:58

No borg in DS9, they were busy being made to look bad in Voyager ;)

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 22:01

I love all the other Treks, but DS9 is the only one which poses real moral questions, and the drama was much better because of it.

The point of Star Trek was the Trek. A captain and his crew heading out to discover new life and new civilisations. Not to put on blue berets and act like a UN peacekeeping force.

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 22:01

I endured 14 minutes of that show, it was torture. Also confusing.

i feel your pain brother. That way we were both succumb to the power of losing batteries and remotes :(

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 22:02

DS9 never made any sense to me. It's called Star Trek not Star Park here and see what happens.

Wars, Crooks, Spys, Klingons, War Criminals & Terrorists.

DS9 was alll about Bajorans and Cardassians

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 22:02

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast07/07/2009 at 22:02

Never work when you want them too. Damn technology. Clearly built by... actually, won't go down that route

  • James07/07/2009 at 22:03

The point of Star Trek was the Trek. A captain and his crew heading out to discover new life and new civilisations. Not to put on blue berets and act like a UN peacekeeping force.

But that was the point of the "Federation" and when DS9 started TNG was still running, so there would have been two shows about the same things.

  • me07/07/2009 at 22:03

Which one is the one with Harold Bishop? As that is the best one, as it has harold bishop

you could be on to something there.

    Ahhh, that was neighbours.

  • Steven Roy07/07/2009 at 22:03

He was raised by bajorans though so he didnt become a proper shape shifter until season 5 ;)

He was always a shape shifter he just didn't meet other shape shifter until the worm hole aliens/prophets were identified. He still spent an hour a day in a bucket before that though.

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 22:03

Wars, Crooks, Spys, Klingons, War Criminals & Terrorists.

    borg?

Thankfully not. The Borg were good in Next Gen. They were rubbish in Voyager.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 22:03

The point of Star Trek was the Trek. A captain and his crew heading out to discover new life and new civilisations. Not to put on blue berets and act like a UN peacekeeping force.

They did that through the wormhole...

    But i get your point.

DS9 was on at the same time as a traditional trek show throughout its run though so it got a bit different, i liked it, especially the war.

  • RG - The Fisi of Sidepodcast07/07/2009 at 22:03

    Ahhh, that was neighbours.

I am denying any fact I have a preference towards Australian soaps.

He was always a shape shifter he just didn't meet other shape shifter until the worm hole aliens/prophets were identified. He still spent an hour a day in a bucket before that though.

Until he joined with the others though he was limited to becoming things he could understand

  • James07/07/2009 at 22:04

He was always a shape shifter he just didn't meet other shape shifter until the worm hole aliens/prophets were identified. He still spent an hour a day in a bucket before that though.

*geek moment* because he couldn't maintain human form forever and needed to revert back.

  • lou07/07/2009 at 22:09

you can't put a smiley after a sentence like that. it needs a

oh...sorry editing photos of Jenson has scrambled my mind... he didn't die though... he could always come back.

he went travelling again, he's been a little absent from the program for a while

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 22:10

    Hollyoaks is underrated.

    go on?

Mum watches Eastenders. Sometimes my visits coincides with it being watched. It is the same storyline over and over and over. Yet the thing wins awards.

Hollyoaks, while preposterous at times (and thus showing it doesn't take itself seriously), does what EE used to do and asks questions. When it isn't doing fluffy stuff.

my keyboard not working properly again, stupid wireless

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 22:10

btw, I have uploaded 319 x GW pics

Oh wow, i missed that, will have a look now ;)

Maybe he's talking to Campos or manor? I hope so

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 22:11

I endured 14 minutes of that show, it was torture. Also confusing.

14 minutes is nothing. Watch it for the rest of the week.

I know he died once and they brought him back.

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 22:13

Which is bigger in UK, Neighbours or Home and Away?

Used to be Neighbours because that used to be on BBC1 and Home and Away was on ITV. Now both are on on Five and nobody cares.

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 22:14

He did got cancer. But sorta left to live somewhere else, so will come back when there is some sort of funeral.

Last time I watched Neighbours, Mike Young had just popped off to Perth to visit his mother. He was never mentioned again.

    how would know that though?

  • Scott Woodwiss07/07/2009 at 22:15

Putting the Sidepodcar project on hold while I think what to do with it next, I need a livery to do on Forza 2. Was thinking about doing a Brawn Merc CLK GTR. Any ideas others I could attempt, maybe? Need somethin' to get the creative juices flowing :P

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 22:16

    how would know that though?

    I've been told.

  • me07/07/2009 at 22:17

Has John Surtees been knighted? He should be.

  • Andy Taylor07/07/2009 at 22:21

ahh. understood. by the same person keeping rg informed no doubt.

Seeing as he left 20 years ago, that's unlikely. Neighbours to me is Joe and Mrs Mangel, Harold and Marge, Henry and Bronwen, Des, Jim Robinson and his interchangeable wives and daughters (by which I mean they kept replacing the actors - once his wife left for a conference as a blonde and returned as a brunette and he didn't even comment on her hair).

    Not watched it since.

I had a small chat with him. I said yesterday, he really is a lovely bloke.

On the straight opposite the main house, before the bridge, we were on the terrace

Right, after revealing waay too much about my tv viewing habits, I shall now say goodnight.

Won't be around for the quiz tomorrow night by the way.

  • Pat W07/07/2009 at 22:27

Ahh right. I was at the bridge quite a few times, on either side of the track. A good place to take track pics between other locations.

Damn this game breaking my heart

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 22:57

I was also dead after leaving the site too ;)

  • Scott Woodwiss07/07/2009 at 22:58

That's the best I could get for luminous yellowy-green. The photo makes it seem a darker shade than it is.

  • Nick07/07/2009 at 22:58

Think of the savings you will make on lion food ;)

  • Lukeh07/07/2009 at 22:59

I feel the monkeys are to blame; they had a walrus exhibit the other side and broke the lion fence. That's just a stupid choice I say.

I bought it too, while on my lunch. Only had one go but it's pretty cool. Graphics are very impressive too. Better than Codies' work on the Wii F1 game so far. Yes, I DO mean that

  • lou07/07/2009 at 23:11

i've just read back through the comments... Jenson was at Kemble today! how unfair i was stuck at school organising this stupid inter house art/drama/music project we are doing this week. :( i could have done with not being in school today... lol

Oooerr, the old school i went to has someone with swine flu. Even more worringly, the school is a 3 minute walk away.

i don't think it's anything really to panic about tbh. there have been a few cases in my school recently, including my best friend and our head master. Everyone is fine, they only seemed to have the symptoms for a few days, and after being cleared by doctors were allowed back to school.
