The weekend is finally upon us, and I personally couldn't be happier about this. Two whole days off, apparently being buried in the snow, so let's talk about Formula 1 instead.

  • We've found some new pictures of the Renault, and guess what? Someone has decided he doesn't actually mind the livery all that much. I suppose if the ugly rear wings will grow on us, then the liveries should do the same, shouldn't they?
  • With the news that Bourdais has secured the seat at Toro Rosso, Sato is left without a seat in F1. He says he has unfinished business and wants to return but knows his options are limited. Instead of thinking about the future, though, in the comments, we've been trying to remember his best moments. If you've got any to add, leave your thoughts.
  • Dank let us know about a BBC press conference to be held later this month regarding what their F1 coverage will be like. Let's say that you could have anything you desire in the way of coverage, what would you want?

If that's not enough for you, don't forget to check out the Red Bull video, and vote in the latest Character Cup. While you're at it, I'll probably see you in the comments.

An on-screen indication when each car is using their Kers button, rather like the Throttle/Brake graphics we currently see sometimes

I'm guessing that won't happen this year, as teams have different systems, probably with different interpretations as well. But when they move to standardized KERS for 2010, they'll probably be able to do this.

new thing for you. not exciting but we've added permalinks to comments on ye olde comments. the plan was to bring them in for the new design but as things slip ever backwards, we ought add the code here.

it should help with bassano's request to link directly to a specific comment, and if alia chooses to reference a comment number rather than "x comments ago", it'll mean incoming comments won't screw up the count back.

the link is the number before the commentators name. yell if you need more info. sorry (ollie) that it took so long ;)

  • Bassano Clapper07/02/2009 at 00:50

    Ah ha, I see it.

Asked the other day but think it got lost in the mass of comments. How are people adding links with custom titles.(e.g. YouTube link "here")

I've done it on forums with BBcode but is not the same here. I take it that's it's using the href="" tag somehow

    Couldn't find any guidance anywhere

lclt has a mad popup thing, that's a bit of a nightmare to use. but if you look at ye olde comments, there's a "link" button. press it and it'll drop the html code into the comment pane.

we'll make sure that button gets added to doohickey asap.

With the news that Bourdais has secured the seat at Toro Rosso, Sato is left without a seat in F1. He says he has unfinished business and wants to return but knows his options are limited. Instead of thinking about the future, though, in the comments, we’ve been trying to remember his best moments. If you’ve got any to add, leave your thoughts.

I would say when he got into the points in Canada in 2007 by passing Alonso.

Good move on STR part. I think Bourdais will perform for them this year. This just be me but I never saw what was special with Sato. He has had his chance, if I say, in some decent machinery, and he didn't cut. There are so many other people (like Franck) that deserve a first crack or proper chance.

Sorry, conspiracy theory here: If STR finally made there move on Bourdais, does this mean that there is movement on the Honda soap opera? STR did indicate that they wanted Button. Does this mean that the team has a savior or is this a case were it was getting to late in the off season and STR needed to move on?

We’ve found some new pictures of the Renault, and guess what? Someone has decided he doesn’t actually mind the livery all that much. I suppose if the ugly rear wings will grow on us, then the liveries should do the same, shouldn’t they?

It's funny, I've been watching some mid to late seventies F1 races. There were some wild design going on at that time and there were a lot of cars on the gird which were UGLY and just didn't look right. The cars of 2009 kinda of remind me of that era.

As for the Renault, I will say it is a step up from last year. However, it is one step one.

BTW: The USF1 website has added a contact us email address to the page. Does it make me sound pathetic that I already inquired if they accepting resumes yet?

annoyingly though, my mac experience from last night:

    - wanted to share dvd driver, failed, spent 20mins googling a solution.

    - installed ilife, installation time = 1hr

    - software asked to reboot

    - on startup software asked to download security updates x2

    - on installation of said updates software asked to reboot

that's what i'd call a microsoft experience. since when does apple software require x2 restarts? also, ilife has been out for about three weeks. how rushed must the code have been for it to require x2 updates in that space of time?

Petter Solberg forms his own WRC team - the catch is that he is running a 2006-spec Xsara. I wonder why he wasn't allowed to use the 2008 Imprezas, considering he managed to convince ex-Prodrive staff to join his team.

I wish him good luck as I like the guy - but a tough year ahead for him I think...

not sure we have. but it would be very nice if the fia actually used their powers for good at last.

i guess it's worth noting the man was talking to the british media, and has history when it comes to changing his mind. it could be taken as another slap in the face for bernie, rather than any actual desire to save the race,

On my GPM2 game right now in the 2009 season, its gone, lets say the squirrels are eating the bears. In that with two races to go, Nelson Piquet is leading the championship, has won a race that wasn't fluky and is 9 points ahead of Felipe Massa.

In a McLaren. Ahead of 3 time race winner Robert Kubica. And Honda managed until half way through 2009 to go bankrupt.

    His best moments for me:

    Japan 2002

Managed 5th in the truck that was the Jordan that year.

This were the only points Jordan scored all season, even with Fisichella in their team.

Additionally, this is the race that made me a big fan of him.

He was on my list of faves after having been torpedoed in Austria earlier that year.

    USA 2004

His only podium, but what a race that was. Managed to pass (and evade!) a naughty, naughty Panis for third.

Couldn't help thinking Honda ruined their first chance at a victory there, though.

    Canada 2007

    Well yeah, come on!

    Spain 2007

Battled and held off Heikki and Giancarlo in their Renaults for 8th, the first point for the Aguri team.

    Brazil 2006

A race mostly remembered for Schumi's impressive farewell from F1, he managed to finish 10th in the last race of Aguri's first season. Posted either the 4th or 7th (don't remember) fastest lap that race.

Those are the ones I specifically remember. There were some other races that saw him do very well but weren't particularly memorable for any reason.

I do remember USA 2007, which saw him working his way up through the field from 19th (give or take) to 13th in about 10 laps time, before running just a bit too wide in the double apexed corner after the first chicane. Unfortunately that ended his race as he got stuck in the gravel trap.

He seemed on fire though, and might have scored some more points after his high in Canada the race before.

The 2005 season was a disaster, with bad luck haunting him. He managed only a few points that season, and unfortunately that sort of killed his career.

I hope to see him back in F1 one day. Here's to hope!

you'll need a subscription for this one. but a good read from johnny noble:

    http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/1988

max talks about the future of f1 on the internet:

"Just think for one moment – on the one side you could have all the archives, all the practice times, all the four (timing screen) pages and everything that is available to the teams. A camera in every garage, a camera in every public area of the motorhomes, a camera in all areas of the paddock. They would be all there and there on-site."

    yeeessss please :D

Thank you! and well done Scott, you were a worthy rival. Shame it didnt work out for you, but someone had to win ;)

But really its congratulations to everyone for a great (if slightly frustrating :P ) experience!

PS. I believe RG had a incident free race for once ;)

How Sebastien Bourdais is ruining my team.

Signs on a rolling 1 race contract (worth blomin £2.1 mil a race!) I can't afford him, however, my clever assistant, continualy hires him. I can't afford to let him go as cancelling the contract would cost me £2.4 million. I have currently, £1.5 million in the kitty.

In another way, Bourdais on his own has managed to ruin 2 years of good work.

Interesting. I have not heard of this before - has this already been discussed and if so, is this why Sir Frank Williams thinks Silverstone has not lost the GP?

If Silverstone is to be kept on the schedule didn't Bernie want Jack the Ripper oops I mean Tilke to do changes to the track? If that's the case I would rather see no race at Silverstone than have to watch a parade of F1 cars going slow just so the team sponsors can see their logos on the cars.

  • me07/02/2009 at 22:34

So we’re back to the Unibody then…..

    hehe. here's the dilemma.

in order to keep making videos we really need a mac pro. but they're clearly rather pricey. buying a unibody is just going to leave me in the same situation a couple of months down the line (noisy fans, melted casing).

plus i need a matte screen, so even if i went unibody, it would have to be the 17" which isn't very portable... so then i'd need an... air.

I've had some interesting feedback on the whole matte/glossy debate and the answer seems to be to ensure your room lighting is adjusted correctly. Having said that, my MBP has an antiglare screen and I don't intend to change it any time soon.

An often used tactic in the early days of BBC comedy. The writers would put in jokes they knew would never be allowed on air so that the less obvious but just as naughty ones could slip through under the noses of the editors.

  • me07/02/2009 at 22:46

OK, I see the dilemma. I wouldn’t expect the Unibody Macs to melt though.

a typical green screen render for inside track takes about 8 hours. i used to set it going before i went to sleep and then picked it up in the morning. if there were problems, it had to be done again.

times that by 17 races and we're working the little machine hard. during rendering, processor usage is normally near 100%, so the fans never ever get a break. it not really a job for a laptop.

hmm. in a darkened room they wouldn't cause any problems, but i have to use an imac screen some days and i get royally fed up of looking at myself. keep in mind how much i dislike photographs of me, and you might guess how much i need a matte screen.

Even putting some freezer bricks close to the inlet side of the fan would mean it was pulling in colder air and would need less of it so its work cycle could be cut at least in the first few hours.

I also recommend smcFanControl - a utility that allows you to manually set the fan speed. Mine is usually set to 3,000rpm which makes the machine a little louder, but stops the sudden ramp up to 6,000rpm. Pushed hard, the fans still speed up.

    Japan 2002

Managed 5th in the truck that was the Jordan that year.

    This were the only points Jordan scored all season, even with Fisichella in their team. {Alenyaa - comment #73}

It was a great race for Takuma. However, Jordan scored seven points (with Fisichella scoring three fifths in succession at Austria, Monaco and Canada and a sixth in Hungary). The reason why the team celebrated Takuma's two points in Japan as if they'd been the only ones they'd had all season was because they were the points that lifted Jordan from seventh to fifth, leapfrogging Sauber and bitter rivals BAR in the process.

Prodrive have developed every Subaru rally car ever so I would be stunned if anyone else was developing the new car especially as Prodrive are running it next season. I am sure he was talking about loss of sponsorship income etc as whatever they get for developing the car won't cover that and of course their long term sponsor was a tobacco company so they may need to find new sponsors.

Didn't they get rid of BAT? I never saw it on the new car. I thought he was talking in terms of engineering capacity, but of course there would have been a huge loss in revenue.

I can't see anyone else capable of developing a new car that isn't tied to a manufacturer already - but wouldn't Subaru have said they were taking a break until the new rules come in if that's what they were planning to do?

I thought they did say it was a break. I am sure I read that a while back.

I'm not sure... they may have. I assumed at the time that they were until the new rules started?

Max Mosley has poured cold water on a suggestion from the teams to scrap the in-season testing ban - from Planet-F1

Hmm, so Max is still keen to crusade cost cutting? This means we will have a lot of teams rushing to get their cars ready on time now...

    Hmm, so Max is still keen to crusade cost cutting? {Gavin Brown - comment #176}

He has to insist the test ban stays because it would completely undermine his impression of cost-cutting if he allowed it to be dropped. Since the FIA has a €1.7m shortfall for 2009 and a €3m shortfall predicted for 2010 despite a $50m windfall during 2008 as the McLaren/Ferrari fall-out was paid, Max can hardly be seen to do anything which could possibly increase the FIA's costs!

testing doesn't cost the fia anything though does it?

  • Alianora La Canta08/02/2009 at 00:15

It does. The FIA provides medical cover, subsidised by the GPDA. There's also the expense of sending observers out to check that the teams are testing where and when they said they would test (not testing on a day when a test has been declared is OK, testing when the team hasn't told the FIA it would test is against the regulations), is keeping to the (fairly limited) regulations concerning testing and that the officials at the testing are doing their jobs correctly. Observers don't have to be present at every test, but they have to be there sometimes or else the testing scrutiny system would fall over.

Does anyone remember anything about a Chinese team that was supposed to enter in 2004?

I remember seeing in 2002 or 2003 that it was to be all Chinese. Chinese tyres, engines, drivers, the lot. I remember seeing on teletext, just wonder if you guys know of this.

Sounds like a typical Bernie plant to stir up interest. It never existed.
