Personally, I had quite a bad day yesterday, but then news came in that cheered everything up. Let's hope we get more of the same today, because it's always good to end the week on a high.

  • Best news of the week so far comes in the shape of Bourdais getting another test with Toro Rosso. Now, I'm not getting my hopes up and thinking this is any kind of hint from them, but it's definitely a good sign, right? Plus, it's a good excuse to put a nice picture up.
  • Bassano came up with the idea of a Sidepodmap for listeners/readers/viewers to locate themselves, so we can get an idea of who comes from where. It's on the wiki and very easy to do, so head on over and let us know where you are.
  • Also, Coulthard was on TV last night, during a Piers Morgan (boo!) programme about Monaco. If you can bear to watch Piers, DC comes across well, and it's nice to see him relaxing and enjoying his time off.

That'll keep us going for now. I refuse to mention the snow, because every time I do it comes back and blocks up all the roads again. Therefore, I'll just say 'see you in the comments'.

Doesn't that count as 'mentioning it'?

    Guys,

Thanks for the DC video link - very interesting!

Piers comes across as a real idiot - especially when he tried to impress DC with some really bad driving. DC looked a little bit scared.

It was also good that DC had a dig at the tabloids, considering Mr. Morgan was the editor of a tabloid newspaper :-)

    BOURDAIS CONFIRMED AT TORO ROSSO!!!

Excellent News!!! I'm so glad he gets another chance this year, he really deserved it :-D

    Don't worry Taku, there's always SpeedCar :-)

Question is, how will he do against the other Seb? Also, did we decide what to call the other Seb to go with Le Seb and Der Seb?

    Mr. Potato Seb of course.

I don't rate Buemi - he's only there because of Red Bull backing. I think Bourdais will beat him as he has more experience with the team...

  • Christine06/02/2009 at 08:56

    Mr. Potato Seb of course.

    Brilliant :)

Which begs the question: why did the web-people at Red Bull remove the French language version from the STR site and replace it with Japanese? Bit odd.

Morning everyone. Our local news said last night that we'd get little next to no snow and we wake up this morning to find a foot or 2 of it, ther worst we've had all week in fact here. Madness.

Just been watching this fascinating if at times quite disturbing video about Ayrton Senna’s death.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0RRNGDt2gA&feature=channel

I watched that recently and felt horrible about the whole thing afterwards. Just reading the avrious bits of information from doctors and what happened terrifies me and I'm glad I was too young at the time to know what happened to be honest...

One of the saddest things about the whole thing personally is the Eric Comas stuff, and with Ayrton pretty much saving his life before Eric tried his hardest to get there and pay back his dues. Tragic :(

  • Jeremy06/02/2009 at 10:37

Everything okay Chris? I'm a bit out of the loop. I went through yesterdays comments but couldn't see any reason for you to have had a bad day - am I blind? TGIF!

Just been watching this fascinating if at times quite disturbing video about Ayrton Senna’s death. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0RRNGDt2gA&feature=channel

Good video, seems to focus on the broken steering wheel though which is what the Italians were trying to use to get the Williams crew convicted.

The movement on the wheel was perfectly normal as the steering colums were designed to bend in order to assist with the forces the drivers were taking at that time. Coulthatd *iirc* demonstrated this with one of the other cars - physically bending the column with the wheel by several centimeters

Imo. The real reason for the accident is that he was heavy on fuel, with cold tyres as the safety car has just pulled in, going into the high speed corner the car grounds out *you can see it from Schumachers on board camera* and loses all ground effect and it then cannot continue round the corner and started to slide, Senna corrected and then the grip came back, unfortunately his wheels were pointing towards the wall now. :(

  • Jeremy06/02/2009 at 11:04

I’m glad I was too young at the time to know what happened to be honest…

2nd worst day of my life. Im sure I'll have more to say in a few months on the anniversary of Ayrton's death.

    Spygate part onehundredthausandseventytwo {Kathi - 16 comments ago}

This is disgusting. Max Mosley had the opportunity to permit a reasonable account of the story and decided to impose his own assumptions on top of everything instead. He is a fairly substantial part of the reason why the full truth will never be known.

If he had any evidence for his assertions, he should have provided it to the legal organisations involved. Otherwise, shutting his mouth would have been a much wiser course of action than dripping insinuations all over the place and making the wounds fester.

Max may well have done more damage to F1 in this affair than any of the people who were involved in the events themselves.

Can you walk to the nearest wine supplier or do you think you'd be better off ordering online from a supermarket website? Either way, you should have something drinkable within 24 hours.

As for what to do without wine, you could try grape juice if you've got any (remembering that wine is grape juice that's been fermented) or experiment with other drinks if not.

It hasn't snowed here since yesterday, but the sun is making very slow work of melting the snow that's on the ground.

It's not out of the question. There's a tremendous mood of optimism in the US at the moment, owing to their new Irish president Mr O'Bama, and confidence is what an economy needs.

  • Alianora La Canta06/02/2009 at 15:01

    So you think Max is bluffing, Alia? {Journeyer - 2 comments ago}

In a word, yes! He needs it to look like his schemes will produce success despite the economic downturn otherwise people who vote for him might wonder why they bother. Which would wreck his election chances. Also he can't afford to show any sign of weakness in front of Bernie or FOTA, both of whom dislike elements of what he is doing for different reasons.

It's easy to do a logo on a website. It's not easy to make a team in F1. But by the time anyone can categorically disprove him, he'll either have won the (October/November 2009) election or he'll have lost regardless. Either way the downturn in opinion of him won't make any difference to Max.

  • Journeyer06/02/2009 at 15:02

Afternoon from a snow-bound Milton Keynes,

As you probably know Red Bull Racing unveils Adrian Newey’s latest creation, the RB5, on Monday. But, if you fancy a sneak preview of what the car’s going to look like we have a film at www.redbullracing.com showing how the 2009 model has evolved from the RB4.

It’s all done - though we say it ourselves - in spectacular computer-generated animation and includes an explanation of Kers which even my grandmother could understand.

So, if you want to see what the RB5 is going to look in the hands of Mark and Sebastian and can't wait till after the weekend, go to www.redbullracing.com/4th-Sector and click on Webber And Vettel Rip Through The Rule Book.

And do tell your friends and fellow fans.

Hey Dave, thanks for dropping by!

Nice to see more and more of the F1 paddock start to trickle in here and make their presence felt. :)

    15 years…. Damn.

Wow, apparantly I was meant to be born around that date as well, would be an awful birthday to share.

    Sorry R.G.

Thank you, and I wasn't even online.

hey everyone, sorry i wasn’t around yesterday. My cat died and everything kinda got on top of me. It’s been a very very bad week thank flipping god it’s friday.

I have to admit - that's one heck of a good looking car Newey's come up with. It's just spectactular! :D Sure, it's only a virtual representation, but if it looks even remotely like that with that livery, then it'll be just amazing.

  • Journeyer06/02/2009 at 16:57

it was kind of ground breaking if i recall though. back when no teams were uploading anything to youtube.

Yup, it was. In the space of a year, YouTube has become standard fare for most teams. However, RBR's PR has stayed ahead of the rest.

I can't believe the speed of my Toyota in Batracer. Almost a second a lap faster than the McLaren.

I would like to say that I had something to do with it (great setup work from Dave) and more car updates than you can shake a stick at...

But I can't help but marvel at how unrealistic it all is, fun though (for me)

  • Dave06/02/2009 at 17:39

cheers sir, looking forward to the launch (and secretly hoping it'll happen sometime around midday, 'cause i slept through the last two teams).

Anyone know how I can get a pint of beer into a brown envelope?

Open the envelope and pour the beer in. How you keep it there is a different matter.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2009 at 18:20

Max may well have done more damage to F1 in this affair than any of the people who were involved in the events themselves.

These things have happened for years and the only reason this one became a huge issue was because Max took the opportunity to have a go at Ron. He then left himself looking very stupid when the Renault thing was unveiled.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2009 at 18:22

    Do you have any grapes?

That sounds like the duck joke

got a rumour round up for us, or has little changed?

Nothing new to report really. Though the BBC do now have full access to the FOM archives. They won't be allowed to show previous races in their entirety. But snippets and highlights such as the European '93 race which appeared on the BBC website recently, and footage to be used on Question of Sport, Top Gear and the like.

  • me06/02/2009 at 20:03

Though the BBC do now have full access to the FOM archives.

    that is wonderful :)

    From James Allen:

Podcasts between races are a possibility. Could be good fun.

    Didn't see that one coming!

    Didn’t see that one coming!

james allen is going to start podcasting?

  • Dom06/02/2009 at 20:23

james allen is going to start podcasting?

    Maybe.

Somehow I'm doubting live shows though. ;)

  • me06/02/2009 at 20:26

Somehow I’m doubting live shows though.

    hehe.

i'm dubious. we decided this week he's one billion times better at writing than he is at speaking. on the other hand, at least he's still being creative.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2009 at 20:32

james allen is going to start podcasting?

Next thing you know he will be baking cupcakes.

Next thing you know he will be baking cupcakes.

  • Dom06/02/2009 at 20:34

i’m dubious. we decided this week he’s one billion times better at writing than he is at speaking. on the other hand, at least he’s still being creative.

Hmm. If the reason we like his blog is because he's an insider, a good writer and researches his posts properly, then what more can he add with a podcast?

But maybe it's worth a try? And if it's not any good then we can always set up a facebook group. :P

  • me06/02/2009 at 20:37

Hmm. If the reason we like his blog is because he’s an insider, a good writer and researches his posts properly, then what more can he add with a podcast?

i would assume it'll be more than just him though right? he can't very well sit and talk to himself. maybe someone's interested in doing a show with him?

    who's unemployed at the moment?

  • Dom06/02/2009 at 20:38

Hmm. If the reason we like his blog is because he’s an insider, a good writer and researches his posts properly, then what more can he add with a podcast?

Ooh, if he's planning ahead maybe it means he's managed to keep his job at FT?

  • Dom06/02/2009 at 20:40

    who’s unemployed at the moment?

    Mark Blundell? Louise Goodman?

    Stop me quick!!

  • Andy Taylor06/02/2009 at 20:43

Next thing you know he will be baking cupcakes.

While dressed as a panda? :)

  • me06/02/2009 at 20:43

    Mark Blundell? Louise Goodman?

    i was thinking gascoyne.

unemployed and he used to do a podcast with a guy who's now been promoted and isn't covering f1 any more. it'll be something like that though. if he still has paddock access through the FT, he'll get some good interviews too.

all that said though, the bbc may well have more podcast plans themselves. once a fortnight audio isn't going to cut it with all their new found rights.

maybe allen will wait and see what they're planning first?

  • R.G (There's snow, what snow, I see no snow, big pansies)06/02/2009 at 20:57

Oh dear, half time in the Rugby League and the parents have put on Corination Street.

maybe allen will wait and see what they’re planning first?

Hmm, would be surprising and doubt it would happen. If he knows about the abuse he gets about his commentry and he had a time to take a break from all of it and get his reputation back to full glory with his journo skills.

But saying of this, this aint commentry, but it may put people off listening to it if they know Allen is on.

  • Alex Andronov06/02/2009 at 23:35

On the character cup discussion from yesterday I did have a thought... Which might have made things easier for Gavin.

If you are talking characters shouldn't we be choosing between Kimi and Flav? Berni and Alonso?

Why just limited to the drivers?

  • Alex Andronov06/02/2009 at 23:37

    will it ever stop??

Well when they turn the electricity of on Tuesday that will be it.

I did also install Microsoft Songsmith earlier - yes I know! :) - but luckily that didn't require a reboot!

  • me06/02/2009 at 23:37

I think we can safely say that this is now "reliable" software in the truest sense. I mean how often would you "need" to do this?

It's really amazing reliability. So kudos!

I was wondering have you changed the code so it minds less if your server goes down? Or has this been a better period for you guys. I say this without wanting to jinx things.

  • me06/02/2009 at 23:41

    Excellent!

i'll remind you of that in 9months :)

I was wondering have you changed the code so it minds less if your server goes down? Or has this been a better period for you guys. I say this without wanting to jinx things.

it'll keep going even if sidepodcast disappears and never ever comes back.

the only thing that can bring it down really is a memory leak, or unexpected responses from the server. am still working on the error trapping code, so it could fail, but each time it'll get more stable as we learn.

conversely, adding more features like drop.io uploads make it less stable.

    kinda like proper development actually.

haha oh dear, i’ve not used the doohickey for a few days (since i can’t use it at school), and must have had little it of a mental blank, cause i typed - doohickey.co.uk into the address bar instead of sidepodcast.com/realtime

we loves ‘we will rock you’

I did also install Microsoft Songsmith earlier - yes I know! - but luckily that didn’t require a reboot!

Hmmm, how many pints would it take to get you to arrange NWA's "Straight Outa Compton" in Songsmith. :D

Saying that, Nina Gordon's version would be hard to beat. (Won't link as it's very Not Safe For Work but worth seeking out for the none-too-easily offended)

The Nina Gordon version is too good to beat. Same goes for Ben Folds version of ... Well I don't even think I want to say the name.

    The Dr Dre one? :D

Is also very good, I'm building a collection of acoustic gangsta rap - no seriously, I am!
