Hi everyone! How are you all doing? I have just had a very nice surprise – a friend from New Zealand just came to visit who I haven’t seen for four years! It was quite a shock when I opened my door to see him there!
There’s not too much F1 news out there as the teams are busy preparing for Silverstone, but here are some links you might enjoy:
- Lukeh, Pat, Kai and Lou have written some great blog posts about the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Sounds like a great time was had by all and the pics and videos look awesome too!
- Speaking of pictures of Vintage racing cars, Leigh has found an excellent coffee table book of the 1934 season.
- I also saw some vintage racing cars last weekend – I was stuck in a monster traffic jam and not one but three of these drove by on the hard shoulder. Wow!
- Christine has posted her Tweets of the Week, along with the Driver and Team Rankings, which are always well worth checking out.
- ‘Disco Dan’iel Ricciardo is making his debut for Hispania this weekend. Here is a short interview with him (Plus Subscribers only).
- His new team have been sold, apparently. Joe Saward tries to untangle the mess and decipher what the future holds for HRT.
- Also in the Plus section of AUTOSPORT, articles on a farewell to Ned Flanders … err … Mario Thiessen (sorry, I always get them confused!) and an article about why banning off-throttle diffusers may well be a load of hot air…
- Here’s a great article from F1Pulse about Sebastian Vettel’s monocoque… and did you know Seb’s website is now selling giant foam versions of his finger? Sadly, that is not a hoax :(
- Here’s a cool article about the Nurburgring 24 Hours. I so want to go to this race!
- Here’s an article about how Ferrari flatter to deceive on road tests. WARNING: It’s a good read but a little sweary!
- I think these farmers lining the Tour de France route have too much time on their hands ;)
Finally please offer your congratulations to Stuart Codling, who won a “Best of Books” award for his excellent Art of the Formula 1 Race Car – sadly not available in Kindle form yet though Mr. C ;)
So that’s all from me. I hope you all have a great day. On Friday I will be on holiday for three weeks, so even if I pop in here I won’t be able to write my usual Daily again until Wednesday 3rd August. Why not volunteer to do a guest post? They’re great fun and all you have to do is write… just get in contact with Christine via the contact form on the About page or just let us know in the comments… and see you there!
keerrrrr-pling!
3 weeks of holiday? wowsers, they're paying you way too much gavin :)
We get 6 weeks of holiday here :)
Have you seen these recent posts on sidepodcast.com?

- Being fan-friendly at Goodwood means immediate Christine's Rankings points
- Daily: 5th July

It's Olympic announcement day!
I intend on watching as much of the live stream as I can but I have vague memories of the 2016 presentations being kind of boring. Perhaps I'll just watch the actual announcement :)

I'm missing the Munich presentation. Stupid work!
morning all
France time
this French man sounds a lot like a British woman. God bless translation.
I really like this nandos australia ad, its quite clever
http://mumbrella.com.au/nandos-launches-tactical-campaign-around-state-of-origin-51661
if I had to watch a chicken cluck on tv for a minute and then get nothing at the end of it i'd want to throw my tv out the window.
I won't be watching Origin so I should be safe :D
hehe, Its clever though, i also like the expectation of an ending which never happens!
I hate ads like that. And I don't wanna see what I'm eating!
oooh mr gavin, i saw your comment while I was trawling yesterdays daily about gamecentre. Whats your username, I want more friends! :D
But its about the state of origin!
me too! how do i add you wonderful people? :D
i am amyf1 if people want to add me. not f1 because of f1, just because thats the username my workplace randomly assigned me for our payroll system and i use it occasionally when i dont feel like putting my last name out and about :)
Apple gamecentre? What does it actually do?
it just means you can compare achievements between friends. And, the size of your tower! *shakes fist at lukeh*
Ah, just tried to sign up, but my username is taken.
Will have a go later
Nice to see Lucas di Grassi has been confirmed as Pirelli's full-time test driver.
Morning all.
What news?
What word?
Morning Stuart,
Congrats on the book prize. Well done.
Ta. BTW, there wasn't actually any cash involved - we're just doing a wind-up on a rather sour journo who was overheard in a Montreal bookshop heaping scorn on my books and Crashed & Byrned! Turns out his own contribution to the F1 book ouevre hasn't been selling in quite the same quantities...
Ooohh - I didn't hear that. The lengths some folk go to, but in saying that, the NotW has tested my suspense of (dis)belief in the last couple of days (won't say any more than that)
hehe, nice!
Anyone we would know?
Heh. Yes.
rubbergoat of course ;)
Can some of you add my wife too? she's manse007...
Ooh. Would it be somebody who makes a sort of annual, perchance?
Shalll watch out for the outraged individual :)
How is mansell allowed to be steward this weekend,
He is directly employed by one teams major sponsor!
http://www.thenational.ae/lifestyle/motoring/nigell-mansell-just-cant-leave-the-track-or-lotus
Heh. Yes.
Also doesn’t like criticism on Twitter.
Oh dear...
I thought it might be but I didn't want to add some random just in case :D
We know his books aren't doing well - he flogs the crap out of them, saying they're limited runs with few copies left, yet they seem to still be on sale 6 months later.
PUPPY... POWER!
Heh, now that is true, but the chap you are thinking of and the chap I’m thinking of are different people (although the chap I’m thinking of is indeed involved in a type of annual, only a more official one).
Ah ok... fair enough then.
Ooh, I want to hear the trumpets again! I am mrschristine on that Game Center doodah.
Now I'm lost.
Won't it scare Mr. C. again? ;)
I think it's a certain person who hosts a webcast on Wednesdays who may have been involved in a failed F1 team?
We can hope :)
Rhymes with blooper.
I didn't realise he had ventured into the publishing arena.
yaaaay friends! I am also assuming that no sidepodcastpeople will judge me for how rubbish I am :D
haha!
Hehehee
He writes books?
I am more concerned everyone will be able to see what rubbish games I play, but oh well :)
I do believe a former F1 commentator and a near F1 team owner were involved in a certain broadcast last Wednesday evening.
How the world didn't implode, I have no idea.
your games all look like ones that make go go 'ooh I'd play that if it wasn't $6' #cheap
Is that like matter and antimatter colliding?
In other news; oh no! It's him again!
http://motorsportxs.com/motorsportXS/motorsportXS.html
Even worse than that !!
Oh dear...
On a sidenote, there was much guffawing (oh look at me !!) regarding the way Pitpass delivered the Ron Walker / IndyCar / circuits story last week.
Made me chuckle at least.
Its GoDaddy.com Certified!
I like that it has the title three times in the URL, just in case you weren't sure.
Careful now - GoDaddy certified Danica too
They must be certifiable!
Matters little now. I do believe Ms Patrick will not even be at Indy next year - the foot is firmly being stamped by her soon-to-be full-time Nationwide boss
Just bought Christines book and now I am being told to wait for processing. Why amazon? It's digital !
I will have to amuse myself with the sample
Oh p.s. Mr C guilt trip works....
What the hey. At least f1 minute Downloads immediately.
$5. I'm a big spender
We appreciate it :)
Now I want a sticker for my iPhone!
:-)
I think Denmark needs stickering. I am going to a major motorsport event in the beginning of august...
Denmark has major motorspot events?
;-)
Looks like you play the same rubbish games as I do ;)
Phew!
We are working out a sticker plan. Who knew they would be so popular?
I don't get why the F1 App is a gamecentre game :D
It's a bit of a toy?
Oi ;)
Yeah we have a couple - it's a big classic car race: http://www.chgp.dk/en/
I got onto gamecentre, I am DubaiNick as everything else i tried was rejected
Oh, hey, look what I found: http://sidepodcastwiki.com/Game_Center_Tags
I was just about to say there was something on the wiki :o
woah! That must have been pre iPad owning as I have no recollection of it :D
Awesome :D
was when it was first launched. so September last year. ;)
FanVision keep sending me event codes for each race. To be honest I'm a little surprised and sad that this far into the season they haven't delivered their web interface and updates and all the other things the USB cable was included for.
That journalist's taste in reading material evidently would benefit from a certain amount of broadening.
Good question. I can't answer it...
Speaking of official annuals not doing so well, I recently encountered a pile of official 2006 season reviews for 99p each. I bought two and it still took the staff nearly three months to get rid of the pile (and no, it didn't get replenished during that time because I asked the second time around)...
He contributes to some. Several of them are on my shelf, so I know which ones Stuart means.
Payment processing?
Yeah.
I thought credit cards were automatic
Far from it sadly
approval should take 2-3 secs?
anyone up for designing a helmet livery for Nick? - http://www.nickheidfeld.com/?5340A0A1
Apparently not
Can we make one out of his beard clippings?
It will need a beard I guess?
Dont forget if you have an australian card, you need to turn it upside down to get the numbers to work in the northern hemisphere ;)
I always forget that bit.

Wow - the weather for Silverstone this weekend doesn't great. Friday appears to be really poor on the long range
It gets worse when you have to wait for "processing" of a free MP3 download...
I just bought a new copy of GP3 (I lost my old disc a couple of months back) and added the GP3 2000 disc to it.
Might sound geekish, but I can't wait
:)
Woohoo! That's the newest racing game I have :D
I gave away my copy as I never played it. Sadly, neither did my mate who I gave it to. Why not GP4 BTW?
Book just arrived.
Kindle stuff is so clever
Now I know what happened on my birthday!
I love them though. I have GP4, but there's less you can do with it and it kills my PC laptop to death.
I still have rFactor, but while I love the modding and the circuits on it, the game itself is less fun.
It's just a shame no one rewrote GP3 / GP4 in such a way to allow longer circuits
:/
I never really warmed to GP3. I currently play Need For Speed Shift 2 Unleashed and rFactor. I have iRacing, but I don't have the time to take it seriously enough...
Points for Lotus?
YAY!
Now I know what happened on my birthday :-)
perfect :)
we now need christine to finish the second one, then so can everyone else.
I can't believe there is so much in it. There's about 3 times more written per day than I expected. Does she sleep?!
Love these tweets for EliGP:
Hamilton tells Mansell and Villeneuve to shut up (basically)... http://bit.ly/nfmvch
In future F1 news, Hamilton says he didn't mean to say that
From him not for him.
she works quite hard when she's awake... annoyingly :)
if you could write an amazon review saying exactly what you just did, i might give you a (virtual) hug.
I can't wait to see what you have for October 29... there was a certain former F1 driver born on that date ;)
Shall do when I get near a proper keyboard
I want to finish the book before I review it, if that's ok?
Yeah one of them drivers crashed my birthday. I was expecting "on this day F1 fan Paul was born".
totally!
Tsk. Can't believe she omitted that one ;)
Hehehe go Lewis. Now if he could just shut up Eddie irvine.......
I can confirm it is not a birthday on 29th October :)
So you're not going to highlight Tiff Needell's awesome F1 career then? ;)
Damn. Missed a trick there.
Google have decided you cant have privacy in google+ http://htl.li/5xJzE
Its amazing that these things keep coming up.
Why is that surprising?
The last bit makes it sound like he doesnt want Jenson as a teammate?
After they got put under federal investigation for Buzz, and the uproar it caused, you would hope they would learn..
Dunno. I am sure every word he says will get criticized and over analyzed ;9
is it wise to tell an f1 steward to shut up before a race they're stewarding, when you're a driver who spends a lot of time visiting the stewards?
But this is social networking. You put something on the web, eventually everyone will see it. Leaving your data in the hands of these companies is never really a good idea as they always end up abusing it.
I dont think anyone has much of a hope of a fair decsion from the stewards this weekend.
"All cars infront of the leading renault are given 60 second drive though penalties for mustache irregularities"
Not at all. Especially Mansell, who can be quite catty
renault?
Has Mansell brought back the 'tache yet?
He is a Group Lotus Employee,
No conflict of interest there....
Don't forget, Mansell is only an advisor. They have been overruled before, most famously Dthe steward (Derek Warwick?) at Hungary last year
oh right. has he actually done anything since last year?
given he was a williams for the real renault announcement. he's just as likely to be biased against williams.
oh my lord, espn employed legard?
The latest @espnf1_live podcast is up. @legardj and the team look ahead to the British Grand Prix.
He goes around the world in a super green suit!
Recently he passed though here...
http://www.thenational.ae/lifestyle/motoring/nigell-mansell-just-cant-leave-the-track-or-lotus
hehe, f1's green lantern.
What's that? Look over there! Is Legard on a Podcast? How will we listen over the Hill? Or around the corner?
Unless he brings back the 'tache he's dead to me. Boo.
There is a big list of tube journeys here for professor giggles to investigate
109 journeys between Central London Tube stations that are quicker by foot than Tube
Lukeh, can you F1Babelfish this?
Cosworth are not building a V6
Yeah, I don't reckon so either.
Are they doing anything in the next few years?
The Bloodhound SSC Project.
:D
Or, put more succinctly, Cosworth are leaving F1 after 2013.
Lots of new UAVs going to be built
Strange why they don't try IndyCars/Le Mans...
Could be 2012, werent the original contracts 3 year?
IndyCar are also V6 though
...or they will be
They could very well be. Either way, they won't be around by 2014.
Might be cheaper than F1?
All new engines, plus manufacturer battle. It might not be quite as cheap as people think. Honda only had it cheap for the last five years, because of no development and mass distribution throughout the field

;)
eeek they're voting!
Hi All,
"Art of the Formula 1 Car' is a beautiful book, my sis picked one up in the UK for me when we were there last year, Pride of place on the coffee table that one :D
Super Stoked about the Williams Renault announcement too, speaking of Williams (& McLaren...) i'm after 1:18 scale models of 2010 or 2011 Williams & McLarens (pref. Rubens or Jenson), having trouble finding them :/ any UK stores that ship international?
help me sidepodcast, you're my only hope..
I could have swore a Button British GP special was announced / released a few days ago.
announcement time http://www.olympic.org/ioc-session-durban-live-stream
the ioc really is a large bunch of old men
same as all large organisations. fia. fifa.
Oooohhh... I wonder which country had the biggest brown envelope...
Hi people! It seems I arrive at the right time :)
general murmers say Pyeongchang
I'll withhold my shock should they win then
True...
Pyeongchang win!
I won't be going. 2022 it is!
They say it will be Barcelona time :D
who?
at the moment theres about 15 potential bids so thats certainly not guaranteed :D
south korea. The only of the three cities that I have to cut and paste because I sure as heck can't spell it off the top of my head.
but you're going to SK this year, you'll probably love it.
it already strikes me as a country i'll be pleased to visit but probably won't go back. so far in my travels i've generally preferred europe to asia.
Election results: 63 votes PyeongChang (KOR), 25 votes Munich (GER), 7 votes Annecy (FRA)
landslide!
also looks like Vettel is on Top Gear this week!
For anyone interested, Fighting Talk are doing a bit of an F1 special on Saturday 11am: Jake Humphrey hosting, Crofty, Davidson, Al Murray and Des Kelly as pundits.

Today I've worked for hours on the Williams-Renault launch video.
From 13 minutes, I've cutted it down to 4, with subtitles and special images...
I just hope they don't make any other new announcement in one or two weeks.
oooh, can we see?
Not yet! I guess it will be online tomorrow ;)
Don't expect any brillant video, it's a normal one hehe. The bad thing was that the original one, the one which Williams gave to the media, was soooo long and soooo boring. I've tried to make it a little bit more dynamic, but we'll see...
Pastor Maldonado said a couple of things. I've delated his seconds of glory.
He was only saying: "I hope I can win, etc..."
what are you using to edit?
A very brutal hatchet ;))
Any kind of videos, but as a hobby. I am not specialized in it, in fact, I don't have the software I should have, but it's enough :)
heeh
I love the name of the first team (Karun Chandhok goes Karting) http://twitpic.com/5m4kdu
I like that there's a 'Dodgy Bad Lotus' :)

Sometimes things you are very familiar with just astound you. The Hubble space telescope is incredible but we all take it for granted beyond enjoying the pictures it produces but it has just made its millionth scientific observation.
1,000,000 million science observations from a telescope in space. Ho incredible is that?

Adrian Newey having a dig at Ferrari and suggesting even though the FIA presidency has changed hands Ferrari are still pulling the strings. It's so rare for him to say anything controversial.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92870
Good thinking
Helloooooo :)
To be fair, he's hardly said anything at all!
Evening
Yet, I think in the Red Bull podcast, someone said it won't be a big deal
Exactly. After a couple of decades of saying nothing he shoved the knife in and twisted it. I love it
It's like all these things like the F-duct or the double diffuser. It takes more than one small part to make an advantage like Red Bull have.
What? Have we read the same article...? I really don't see how he's twisting any knife.
autosport are fillin gin the blanks somewhat.
Agreed. As the RBR was designed for this in mind, it brings downforce to a large portion of the floor/ The others will lose it at the rear, potentially causing bigger balance issues
With tonic ;)
oops
We have had FOTA all being sweetness and light with teams sticking together against the world and he just said that the rule is being changed like active suspension was because Ferrari are technically unable to make it work. Neither Ferrari nor the FIA are going to like that and there may be repercussions
Ping: http://www.f1bigpicture.com/news/special-offer
Fair enough. Nothing like a bit of Ferrari International Assistance.
Airflow management is like herding cats. If teams are absolutely relying on the blown diffuser to pull airflow through a certain path and that pull is removed they could find the flow going somewhere or detaching completely when the driver brakes to corner entry speeds or even when the front of the car dives as the brakes are applied.
It's traditional
That's a unique anaology :D
Evening guys!
Hi Lukeh
You must have heard of things being described as being as difficult as herding cats before. Trying to control airflow must be like that when every little touch on the accelerator, brake, steering wheel changes the aero profile of the car must be nearly impossible
Hey Lukeh
Don't think I ever have but I like it anyway
#rankings point for lewis: https://twitter.com/#!/LewisHamilton/status/88679809298866176/photo/1
making the queen's guard flinch :)
The speed tape was glinting in his peripheral vision
As long as you like it
its only being said because Ferrari have said nothing about the whole issue.
the last few weeks the story of who would be most affected has changed over and over.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/britain-2011-race-information
True but Adrian Newey saying who will be affected has a bit more wait to it than other people speculating
Evening folks
Uh-huh...
Ooooh Torchwood is back a week tomorrow.
BARROWMAN!!! *shakes fist*
Looking forward to it. It's 6 days after broadcast in the US. I'm thinking I need to edit my Twitter to stay spoiler free.
oooh of course. Forgot about that.

It's a bit doom and gloom, but it's difficult to disagree with some of it - http://jalopnik.com/5818178/
Just been reading Lewis' comments from today about what people like Nigel Mansell have been saying. He really needs someone to take control of his media comments.
Meh - I stopped paying attention to him to be honest. Ironically enough, he's like Mansell in that I just want to tell him to "shut up and get on with it."
I think Mr C has left the giant Sidepodfan on. It's very windy outside.
Are you sure that's not just Lewis talking again?
Can't see the problem with it myself.
I'm amazed he is telling others to keep their opinion to themselves after some of the things he's come out with this year!
I think with Lewis, whatever he says or does, people are just gonna have a go at him.
Fair enough, but it was just something that surprised me when I read it after what's been said this year. I'm certainly not trying to single him out just because he's Lewis or anything.
I know.
I don't think he aimed it at them rather the media for the speculation over his future. Autosport took it another way.
agreed.
lazy reporting from Autosport. I haven't even seen the full interview and I get it :)
Good evening everyone. I had a nice day out and about in Ambleside.
And in the latest sunburn news...my nose has peeled.
Hi Kai, good to hear you';ve had another good day :)
evening kai
Hi Kai. Sounds great, except for the sunburn thingy...
whooops!

So Facebook is getting Skype video chat+
My new room is fantastic. It's hard to leave it. The bed is the most comfortable ever and I love this cool weather.
handy. google+ got there first, but facebook has more users.
Adverts for facebook linkups have been all over my skype for about 2 weeks now. Very annoying!!
Another travel day for me tomorrow, so I'm packing up again. I want to make sure I get enough sleep, so I'll catch you guys tomorrow from Scotland.
Good night.
Night Kai
Holy crap, this dust storm is making things dark! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9ETeoIVx2M&feature=player_embedded
This is an excellent piece from Maurice Hamilton
http://www.grandprix.com/columns/maurice-hamilton/yesterday-tomorrow.html
it is a good post, but also highlights why goodwood would have been wasted on me. i could've gone there and missed everything maurice highlighted.
What's stopping you from learning? Lack of interest?
yeah, lack of appreciation and even if i learnt, i'd forget it all soon enough.
Regarding the indy stuff (which would have been completely lost on me this year), it's handy to have experts like Kai and Pat with you, learning as you wonder around is awesome! I'm also finally learning touring car drivers names... thanks to Pat. :) I think last year i asked him the same questions too :D
I just think it's really really weird that someone so into the technical side of modern F1 doesn't seem to give two hoots about the same developments in a different time period or in something that isn't F1.
you overestimate how much i'm interested in motorsport, i'd guess.
where 'final cut' is going, and where it's been, is far more up my street. f1 is one outlet, rather than a way of life.
:D
I suppose I assume someone who goes to the time and effort of building a motorsport website, blog, podcast, another podcast, app, etc, etc, is quite keen on motorsport, yes... :)
I think they like the website, the blog, the podcast, the app more than any particular topic though?
ahh, that just happened, twas never the plan.
could've been any topic really, was just a shared interest. i'm certainly no car geek, or motorsport aficionado. mine's blue and runs on diesel, beyond that, meh.
I'm not a road car geek, you should see the state mine's in now :)
Alphonso ♥
hehe, i guess another way of looking at it, is that at goodwood i'd switch between the f1 paddock and the top of hill when the f1 cars get up there, and then follow famous people around (like franck). it's still fun, it's just the whole event is geared towards a more savvy motoring fan, and that's why i can skip it easily.
I wanted to talk more, and you liked geeky things such as microphones. F1 was just the bit that joined the two together. How different life might be if we had chosen birdwatching or something.
if only you had been more interested in browser technology.
*sigh*
