We are halfway through the week and there is snow in the UK causing traffic chaos all around. That's why we recommending staying indoors! There is plenty going on in F1 for now to keep you occupied. Here are some of the things we're talking about:
- Flavio has managed to overturn his ban, although the FIA aren't at all happy about the ruling and are considering their options. We had a breakout thread with the news, and I also wrote a post about Renault's timely announcement of their new team principal. Share your thoughts in both threads!
- There's been a lot of discussion about Heidfeld and where he might fit in the 2010 grid. The man himself is acutely aware that the seats are being snapped up from under him, but says he is prepared for the unexpected. After the last few years in F1, so are we all!
- Dank has an interesting post encouraging you to invest some time in watching a series other than F1, and see how you get on with it. He makes some good arguments and it's worthwhile giving it a shot. I am not yet convinced though.
That's all for now, keep us updated on how your week is going, and as ever, I will be round and about to see you in the comments.
New Day = Me sleep. adios
see ya jon.
Evening one and all
[pulls the shift change lever with Mr Waldock]
Night Jon. Hi Bassano
Something for Mr C (and other audio engineers)
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/01/05/second-generation-blue-microphones-mikey-announced-uses-free-ap/
An upside down app within plug-in mic.
Genius!
ahh, very cool. might be worth looking into.
g'day.
If we get them at work I will do a field test :D
On that note, now I have apparently solved my Gmail issue, I will wish you all a good night.
Are we tired of hearing about snow yet?
see ya.
G'night Andy
ooh, new day and a shift change.. I was only gone an hour.. :-)
Yeah but only because we don't have any here. It sounds like everyone is over-reacting. But - you can be sure as soon as it snows here I'll be going on about it too.
When I was leaving work about a quarter of the Night Shift had phoned in saying they were having problems getting in
Reading was apparently over 4 inches about 3 hours ago
I still fail to understand how 4 inches of snow stops you driving around places?
isn't that like, over the bottom of the bumper?
Well, that was from the folk who made it in, those that didn't were further afield. I think they were more concerned about getting stuck at work come 06:30
I lived on the south coast for two years and heavy rain caused the traffic to really slow down.
10 cm
doesn't help :)
how high is an average kerb?
I think stopping becomes the problem
Less than that I'd say, but not by much
4 inches. Maybe more
seeing road markings another.
Just be sensible though. Use your gears a lot and don't drive too fast.
10cm of ground clearance would be pretty crappy for a road car
That's why give way and stop signs are a different shape to any other sign
true, was thinking about the ones marking the middle of the road.
I probably wouldn't want to drive about if I wasn't very familiar with the route that's a fair point.
After a 10 hour shift I'd be pretty hacked off if I couldn't drive home at dawn
'cos you'd need a 4x4?
There are a lot of difficulties with driving in the snow
I have this fear quite regularly although it's slightly earlier in the night I get to run away home. Bad times :(
No. I have driven in more than that
Of course it would. It is slippery and the visibility is less.
My fiat panda seems to manage just fine.... I've had snow since before Christmas and have made it to work every day.
The difference between how people on the south coast react to heavy rain than those in the north of England or Scotland is quite incredible.
If I slowed down for rain, I'd never get anywhere ;)
is it not that the roads are carry more traffic?
Just before Christmas about half a dozen people had nightmares getting home, the worst ones took 6 - 8hrs for a 60 minute journey
On the South Coast they also carry a lot of the elderly!
I used to use a short section of motorway on the south coast which normally ran at 70ish mph but slowed to 30 if the rain got heavy. I have never seen that anywhere else.
That affects a lot of the behaviour but the wet/dry difference just blew me away.
Not during morning rush hour
I've only seen that once in 18 years of driving to work
It was incredibly heavy rain but lasted no more than 15 mins
Driving in summer isn't all that much fun. Lots of traffic, most of it slow.
All looking for a packet of Wurther's Originals
I've only seen that in exceptional circumstances, when it was really bad and you literally could not see. Normal heavy rain I've only noticed it drop to 55 or so
A couple of months ago, the traffic all but stopped on the M6 here the rain was so heavy. You really could see nothing at all.
Usually looking at the scenery. I've lived here on and off for nearly 30 years, I know what the scenery looks like, get out of the way :-)
They are the same people who wander aimlessly around supermarkets with no sense of awareness.
I hate that, is why I normally get groceries after a late shift and use the self service check-out
Don't you always find that there's an unexpected item in the bagging area?
That is a pain, I'm getting better at it
Put all your bags-for-life down first before scanning
This is like some secret society I'm not aware of :-)
Your supermarkets don't have any self-service checkouts?
Nope. I've used them a couple of times in other towns when I've only had a couple of things to get... not enough to warrant a bag..
Yeah but the machines have a mind of their own... I feel most sorry for the checkout staff who have the tills nearby and have to listen to the patronising voice talking to people who can't follow simple instructions all day....
Waitrose has those scanner things you can take with you. That and the self-service checkouts seem remarkably trusting.
am amazed shops haven't pushed home delivery more than they do. must reduce shoplifting to zero.
To be honest, on the whole, staff theft and fraud relating to deliveries is far more costly. When you're dealing with deliveries, it's whole pallets at a time. No-one really cares about the odd bunch of bananas.....
ahh, fair point.
I used Ocado for a while, was pretty decent and is supposedly cheaper now
You do have to be quite organised and delivery will be a couple of days away if you want a convenient time
I would imagine the cost of transport is quite high.
It also cuts their costs by a massive amount. Imagine the cost of building shops, heating them, stocking them and the amount of fresh produce that is waste due to damage in shipping or handling.
That cost is usually borne by yourself the faithful consumer :P
Delivery charges are £3 - 5 unless you spend over £80 or so
am surprised that amazon haven't taken a look at solving that one.
Everything is..
Yeah but is that the full cost or just a subsidy? I mean investing in the vans, drivers, fuel, etc. is not a cheap endeavour.
Except in Sainsbury's where they have staff go round with a trolley and your shopping list [insert facepalm here]
At least Ocado use distribution centres
It's cheaper than building supermarkets
I'm not sure that's true. In the supermarkets you see staff pushing stacks of trays around, they are collecting things from the shelves for home deliveries. I don't think it comes from a distribution centre.
To quote Mr McEnroe You cannot be serious.
4 or 5 deliveries per hour for about 14 hours per day. Maybe it's slightly subsidised to stop you going to the competition
Stupid but true
I'm not sure that bothering to set up insane centres would save all that much? A supermarket already has a national network set up. Surely they'd just have someone in a warehouse instead taking single cans out of giant boxes>
There are a lot of localised distribution centres
Fair enough. It's not something I've ever devoted a lot of thought to.
maybe you should. this could be your dragons den winning idea.
Ah! Genius. Although Nick already promised to buy me a coffee shop. I've become torn.... Warehouses sound quite cold?
You need a warehouse that has to store things at a set temperature and humidity
Ah Steven, just the man I need to go on Dragons Den with me!
What's your plan?
Lady Laney tweeted this earlier but it's worth repeating, fantastic rally and demonstration footage on YouTube
Ken Block 2009 Highlights Slo-Mo & Hi-Def
That's where you come in! :)
OK what's your product then?
I don't think you're getting my concept! You're definitely the ideas man....
blimey.
a hoy hoy. Mclaren need to hurry up and release their 2010 merchandise so i can spend my £30 voucher. I can guarantee nothing i buy will say "Jenson" or as my phone wants to call him, Lensoo.
lensoo it is.
So your plan is leave everything to me and you just turn up on the day it is filmed.
Ready to pre-order
i like that the predictive dictionary couldnt handle optometrist but can handle lensoo. I think i shall use it all season.
I'm sure Lou won't mind at all
I should've bought a 2009 Victory shirt when it was on sale for less than half the price of a 2010 one :(
brilliant
lensoo sounds Finnish so that has to be a good thing
Hi
thankyou bassano. However i cant handle preorder mock ups, i need real photos! I dont want a team/victory shirt or cap because i have plenty. Oh decisions! If they do a set of 2009 photos i shall get that because i have the 07 and 08 ones. Incomplete collections freak me out.
I agree, tis why I'm waiting as well
Amy, who else aside from yourself & Kathi are onsite at Spa in the portakabin accommodation?
#Spa
Goodnight. Off to set an early alarm on the off chance this white stuff appears.
see ya sir.
G'night Pat
Your end looks like it'll get light snow in the morning
so far just chris. 3 beds free! #spa
I'm still thinking a hotel with restaurant & pub nearby is the way to go. We shall see
All or nothing
We were told heavy...
I have a gas bottle heater and I'm struggling to turn it off.
He's driving some of the WRC rally's this season, and I think is going to drive a full schedule next season.
It will be interesting to see how wel he does. I had no idea he actually competed
i would be there too with bells on if i wasnt traipsing around the other side of the world for a month. Stupid hotel prices. Stupid expensive holiday. I am excited to learn the campsite has a grand prix buffet no friday and saturday nights. I heart buffets. They also do packed lunches for taking to the track. Yay for food!
he competes in some American rally series with Subaru. Monster will be entering a Ford into the WRC : http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/15/report-ken-block-heading-to-wrc-with-new-monster-ford-team/ and he'll be one of the drivers.
It should be interesting, and it would be nice if we could get some coverage on American TV. As it is I have to obtain it in.... *ahem* "other ways" if I want to watch any WRC coverage.
Your Euro trip sounds more exciting than 'traipsing'
true!
a US driver, an ex-F1 driver, and a guest MotoGP legend. The WRC sure are pressing the right buttons. They need more top-line teams, though.
Hello. Just dropping by for a bit.
pleasure to have your company.
i just realised i forgot to bring cutlery to eat my lunch with. Noooooo!
is that why you heart buffets?
Just go to a supermarket and pick up a pack of cheap plastic cutlery that will do the next dozen times you forget
that is the plan but the only supermarket nearby is aldi and they dont sell them. I normally get plastic cutlery at the cafe downstairs too but they are closed :( i will go on a mission and see what i can find!
i heart buffets because my inability to make a decision doesnt matter. I can have one of everything!
i have decided to forego my home bought lunch until tomorrow and instead go and get a baked potato. The shop that sells them is kind of amazing. Stay tuned to the drop in about half an hour for the amazingness! Unless you go to sleep of course
As good as that sounds, I am about to head off for some Zeds
night sir.
i'll be here amy.
good boy. It will still be there when you wake up ;) night!
what happened to early morning starts mr c?
snow. working from home = my hours :)
Watching Eric Bana's "Love the Beast".
I _THINK_ they're speaking something resembling English, but I'm not exactly sure...
so jealous of all the working from home folks no here. There are so many of you! I totally should have done an IT degree.
what's a degree? ;)
working from home is bad for me. if i didn't go to work, i wouldn't ever leave the house.
i can see the benefit of reducing emissions not sitting in traffic etc, but because i don't have a phone, the car is also the only place i'm disconnected from the web.
am only homebound because of the weather.
:)
talking of phones, interesting read about how google shook up the mobile market yesterday:
"...the Google store is now the only smartphone store in the US where, for every phone on offer, you first pick which phone you want, and then you pick a network and a plan on that network. So you can comparison shop among networks based purely on plan price and network quality, because you already have your phone picked out."
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2010/01/googles-big-news-today-was-not-a-phone-but-a-url.ars
good point. If i didnt go to work the only people i would ever see would be my flatmates and the staff of the 7 eleven.
:D
I certainly hope it succeeds. And the Nexus One is available on Verizon by the time my iPhone contract runs out.
I'm working on my bachelors degree right now while still working full time, but I've been working for 13 years as a sysadmin/software engineer without a degree.
the problem with IT is that it's still moving to quickly for education to keep up and stay relevant.
that's why I'm doing computer science. it's not tied down to any specific technology, whereas, at least 'round here, IT type degrees are more specific.
i likes your thinking.
lunch is on its way to the drop. And into my belly.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/06012010-001
that's a potato?
potato covered with garlic butter cheese sour cream bacon and mushrooms. Plus coleslaw on the side. I want to marry this meal.
:P
YUM YUM! :D
Most odd - I went to the Kangaroo TV website to reserve a Kangaroo TV. And lo and behold... they weren't accepting 2010 reservations yet. At all. :O
Very odd considering they opened 2009 reservations right after the 2008 season ended...
Ohhhhh my... *drools*
hahaha! I'm working from home again today - but we're allowed to do it twice a week.
hahaha! you wouldn't go out on weekends, then? :P
haven't for ages. the hobby became an obsession.
we should probably go somewhere this weekend.
the funny thing is, i finished computer science... with an IT major. :D hehehe. and i only use... something in the region of 10% of what i learned there. :) and i'm in an IT job!
You're not alone. :D
Sounds like a good idea - enjoy the "offseason" while you can. ;)
it's different here. The two majors don't share much other than the standard english/history/etc. classes.
but it's when we do the best stuff. i think the new plan is to do less race stuff. avoiding all free practice sessions will help.
Heads up to all, I was just browsing on itunes and came across an itunesU series on finite element analysis. Why is this interesting you ask? Its all about F1 and Red Bull. I have yet to watch any but am downloading them all. If you already knew this then my apologies.
for example, an IT degree here might have a class on routing but it's dealing with setting up a router, etc. But a CS class on routing would discuss all the algorithms behind it.
found it yesterday in fact, must be new. haven't had chance to watch yet though. cheers webby.
fingers crossed that it is interesting and doesn't put me to sleep like real university used to
My first attempt at a degree 18 years ago was aerospace engineering. "finite element analysis" is already bringing back horrible nightmares.
i just like the picture of the car :)
Just hink what it will do to a geologists brain then :)
Ooooooh. I didn't know that! Will search for it. Thanks, Webby! :)
When it says 1:08, that's minutes and seconds, right? Not hours and minutes?
yeah, mkinutes and seconds.
phew! so it's less than an hour. it can't be that bad. ;)
will download it now. :D
i dont really go out much on weekends although this weekend i am going to the beach because its going to be 38 degrees. I still dont really know many people in melbourne and being a homebody doesnt help when it comes to making friends!
How is it going with your eee?
i have made good friends with it and now it sleeps until august. Or until i need it sooner. :D
bahrain fp1.
live timing.
can i not use vaio for live timing? I would totally take the eee to albert park for live timing but it appears virgin is the only provider whose 3g dongle doesnt work. And guess who my provider is!
Sadly my one is with a work colleague, I still miss the portability of it. What I have found helpful is to get people to work with Open Office on both their Windows and Linux boxes this smooths transitions.
well... you have two screens to play with now, right? ;)
Moooooooorning
you can but the eee can be a dedicated live timing machine.
vaio for commenting.
hey ya.
To my knowledge the only requirement for live timing is Java (JRE).
All our 3G service providers are rubbish in SA - Virgin was the cheapest without getting involved with huge contracts.
but i use the 40" tv as my second screen. But i like the sound of tv for video, eee for live timing and vaio for commenting. I wish i had room for a desk.
Ello Jon. :)
There speaks a dedicated computer Geek
What Linux do you use on your eee?
i wish i had a 40" screen!
latest version of ubuntu netbook.
I bought the special 2 DVD set for Xmas and watched it on Monday. As an Aussie car nut, it was fantastic. A bit embarrassing in some ways though. We are not all like that... Honest!
The extras DVD had the full Clarkson interview. If he was being serious, then he's an idiot
I was not a fan of the remix software, mostly because I connect to a 22 screen when either at home or work. Otherwise it is great - I thought Easy Peasy was really great - its a reworked Ubuntu Remix.
the issue with virgin here is they dont have their own 3g network so they resell the optus network. I got the 3g modem installed on the eee but when it looks for networks it only finds optus. And my user name and password dont work because im not an optus customer!
Same set up here with Virgin piggybacking onto another network.
I haven't been up this early in a very very very long time.
How are we all?
'
I'm good. Just got my GP tickets - 2 days after I booked them. I'm impressed!
Meanwhile, I'm trying to access the website of our local carrier, who has slashed ALL their domestic and international flight fares in half. :O Of course, it's next to impossible to reach the site right now...
wow that was fast! I notice f1.com still doesnt have china tickets for sale
Right, so i was meant to be going into London today, to watch some interviews being recorded at a little Radio Station....but just got this...
"The snow is going to make it very difficult for me to travel into Premier Radio from Reigate today, and since three of my four guests have already had to cancel, I am going to have to cancel my interviews today."
boooo. i am, up now....grr
cool.
i didn't book there - i booked on the official Chinese GP website. :) F1.com tends to have a lag of a week or so after the circuit website starts selling. :)
except for the snow, obviously.
yeah i never booked through them i always go straight to the circuit. I dont like the f1.com collection method.
and it being cancelled. ;)
what's wrong with it?
ugh. we just realized the new passports aren't ready yet (we had them renewed before christmas because it's almost expired). and we need those to book.
and to think i already got 4 seats. i have to let them go. ugh. :(
in singapore i met up with a guy from the mclaren forum who had bought his tickets from f1.com and been sent a map of where to get them with his confirmation email. So we went all the way to gate 1 to the spot on the map to get them where they told him the collection point had been moved to another spot right beside where we had originally been no the other side of the circuit. Grrr. Put me off them forever. Much prefer getting my tickets in the mail :D
ted news:
i have missed him
Morning all :)
Can somebody summarise? Will have to watch it later...
nothing new. just ted.
ted news is not available in my area.
Ubuntu Netbook remix is quite cool really. But I have found the eeeeeeeeePC to be quite slow in comparison to the Acer Aspire I have.
(contains f1 footage, soz)
Ted is only available in the UK - no translations are offered ;)
ted in non-transferrable, has no regulatory value.
do you mean the hardware here - on my own eee I used Chruncheee because it was so light on resources and worked really well, but it is minimalist.
Ted's opinions are his own and do not necessarily reflect those of the BBC ;)
Yeah I do - Ubuntu is faster than XP, but I just found the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeePC to be a bit slow for anything other than very light use...
If you have to stay home because of the snow, do you use a holiday day, or does the employer lose out?
Generally employer loses out i think
I hate the cold, but that's one advantage of living where it occasionally snows
#MFC Cassettes are not dead - they have survived as an art form http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8441839.stm
I miss my walkman :(
VERY occasionally....
This year is the first year it's properly snowed around here
Has anybody talked about the new Google phone yet?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8442712.stm
about 10 links back. but not relating to advertising.
If I decide to go to the GP in Melbourne, which hotel does Lewis stay in? Hilton? I get discounts there.
Is there a cheap way to get tickets this close to the event? Do I join McLaren fan club?
So many questions!
AMY!!!!
Cheers, will read back.
I would like to add that I don't own an iPhone because I see them as too expensive - but I would consider buying this 'stand alone'...
how do the prices compare to a standalone iphone?
hehe, i like that the beeb interviewed scoble.
This link says £331: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8442205.stm
I don't know if iPhones are cheaper in the UK but the best contract I can find is about £500 for 6 months...
Oh, a mate of mine bought an unlocked one on eBay for £400 but it had GPS installed. The people who have these really have to faff about to use them though :(
my conclusion of the nexus is that just do not get user interfaces. the UI looks as plain as the search homepage.
put some goddamn colour into your efforts googlepeople.
"Please note that we do not ship US T-Mobile service plans outside the United States. Also we can ship the unlocked phone to the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Hong Kong."
interesting.
spring 2010 for voda access in europe:
The Nexus One Phone with Vodafone wireless service. Coming soon to Europe.
wireless?
Apparently we can buy Android phones here because I saw a Danish Tech TV program where he was talking about one that looked like Christine's.
Sadly, as for many Danish TV programs (like the F1 Coverage), they talk to you as if you know nothing about tech or you are a small child :(
It's an old fashioned radio?
retro baby :)
lewis stays at crown towers. The hilton in melbourne is not swanky enough. Gp tickets are like flights they are cheaper if you buy them earlier. The mclaren fan club wont help you but join anyway no the offchance you get a pit tour
Hey guys. Nearly got lambasted for leaving the house later than normal, despite there being 2 trains this morning!
Holy mutha, it worked! I'm shocked and delighted in equal measure!
mobile doohickey?
Thank you Amy!
Is it fair to say that apple making the hardware and software is an advantage in phones as well? Android seems like windows to me.
I'm happy to be corrected.
Aren't all smart phones expensive if yyou use them?
how do itunes expect me to be mfc when they charge $55.95 for a tv show that i can buy at the big yellow house of jeremy for $19.95 per season.
@me: yes, on Opera Mini in Mobile mode. I'm far more cheered up this morning.
good to know. cheers chap.
Broads are a nice white colour this morning. No snow in town though, feel let down.
I thought he was sponsored by Hilton?
What's the big yellow house of Jeremy?
@me: only thing missing in this doohickey is quoting and posting replies. *nit*
yeah, no can do on ye olde phones, sadly.
bed is calling. see ya'll around lunchtime.
you are officially nocturnal. night chief
@me: Cya. Layabout. ;-)
You are joking? I got up 4 hours ago!!!
JB Hi Fi.
yep but the Hilton in Melbourne is gross
Coolies.
actually I take that back, they have just opened a brand new one so maybe this year they will stay there.
Mornin all. School is closed. Not complaining.
I better take over this shift then. Morning all.
After a second try, I've booked our flights to Shanghai. Whoopee! :D
hooray! get a good deal? I heart flight sales.
Of course - 50% off, in fact. Round trip tickets for 40 GBP each. :D
Who are you flying with?
woohoo!
Cebu Pacific. Heard of them? It's a local carrier.
yay.
(not on itouch in bed, honest)
No, but for £40, who cares? ;)
:D
Eeeeexactly. :D
On a sorta tangent, while I was off for Christmas it was amazing how my wife and my body clocks shifted so much - she went to bed and got up about 3 hours later and I didn't sleep until 4am :O
Several new things for you, all rolled into one: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/06/number-of-the-beast/
Morning! Ah, a warm office! More than I can say for outside.... :D
Hello from a nice, warm, cosy bed.... :)
Morning :)
Boo. I have to get up and do work. but I do get this view from my window http://twitpic.com/wvutd
ooh my likely video!
Hello people
Today is a good day, no school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wooooo!
Now that I think about it, I did appreciate growing up in a country with snow days. I'd never have got one if I grew up here!
Where's that?
I am in London, you have probably had many more than me in Newcastle
Melbourne
Probably. If I had lived in Alnwick or somewhere in Northumberland, it would be worse.
We will probably have tomorrow as well because its heavier tomorrow night :D
Morning
I like the type of snow we have today :-)
Enough to look amazing and not cause any (many) problems. 1cm or so
jpancoast was talking about WRC this morning. There was coverage in the US lsat year but I'm not sure where, it was somewhere obscure and it was very delayed.
Hey mate.
The phones are really quiet today! Seems we are in a little bubble and the worst of the weather missed us. Some people haven't made it in and report 4 inches..
We have most people back from holiday and things are starting to gear up. Strange really as part of our business continues independent of the office and did so over the whole Christmas period...
Ironically, Mum tells me so is the one in Paris... :-)
(BMW) Sauber to unveil new car on the 31st at Valencia.
Lee McKenzie
Why has she called it that?
Because it still is BMW Sauber...
It's officially a "Work from Home" day for me today. Not only that but we are encouraged to work "offline" as the VPN is being hammered by all and sundry. Therefore I declare this a 'snow day'.
God I love snow.
Officially at least...
SSN are saying Flav is going to take legal action against Nelson Piquet jr.
Reuters say its probable anyways: http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKLDE6050LH20100106?pageNumber=1&virtualBrandChannel=0
Morning.
Evening sir
Heyy
Righto, I didn't have time to promote this properly before, so:
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/06/number-of-the-beast/
New F1 Minute blog is there to provide the admin type updates that are sometimes required.
Like today, when we are debuting brand new F1 Minute video!!
http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/04/kubica-set-to-stay-at-renault/
This is something we have been thinking about and planning for a long time, and we are playing about with the concept now.
Let us know what you think!
work offline? That's like... Not working at all! :o
Your words, not mine ;)
Oooh, awesome! The video is fantastic too and a blog can only be good for the site :)
We now have LOTS of snow in Norwich. It's like Mother Nature just dumped a load on the city in the last half hour. It's covered in white. The roads were clear an hour ago, they're now slowing traffic down to about 15mph!
That's very well put together. You'll soon have your own slot on BBC Points West ;)
Maybe they can go on BBC Tees with Lisa McCormick and together they can make an uber Felipe segment?
Already have ;)
OMG!
Today at work was a New Year's buffet - sushi, good fish, roast meats, wine, and CAKE!
ooh, will watch when I get home!
That is a great article!
"Champagne? No, I opened a Coca Cola because I'm on a diet. I've been eating rubbish for three months," said the 59-year-old, who will become a father again soon.
"We still haven't agreed a name. It certainly won't be called Max!"
wow!
Damnit Flav, that made me laugh. How annoying. :)
The Kindle is officially available in the UK now: http://www.bitterwallet.com/attention-one-armed-man-kindle-is-now-in-the-uk/23891?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+bitterwallet+(BitterWallet)&utm_content=Google+Reader
it already was. thats the super giant kindle.
I wonder if that works in Denmark?
yes. yes it does.
Do I have to buy the 'International version'? What are the limitations of the device?
Finally got round to seeing the new Star Trek film last night. I'm really not a Trek fan at all but my god, was it brilliant!
That's what my wife said. I'm a mild trekkie and I loved it too! (Got it on DVD for Christmas)
The International version is the only version that exists. Country-specific limitations are found in the 'live outside the US?' box on http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reading-Display-Generation/dp/B0015TG12Q/ref=kinww_ddp
Looks cool but expensive. My problem is that English books are hard to fnid here!
The DX is a bit over the top, original Kindle is $200 cheaper and does exactly what you need it to do. The International availability of some books is a bit rubbish which can be annoying but I've still managed to find plenty on the Kindle store that I want to read. And just like any other digital content there are definitely other ways to get content that might land you with a hefty fine.
I would much prefer to be able to do legally of course!
of course! There are lots of sites that offer out of copyright books, eg http://www.feedbooks.com . I've been enjoying these, I quite like reading the classics!
Snow has now stopped and is starting to clear a bit. Only an inch, which in half an hour isn't bad.
Still snowing heavily here, 7 or 8 inches thick on the floor. And I go to work soon, fun times! :)
We got, sun?! Somehow.
Bear in mind, 7 or 8 inches of snow means your foot is going straight through the snow and coming up past your ankles.
I know, I don't have wellies though or boots so it's gonna be a cold afternoon in work..
spare of shoes?
*pair
For anyone who is bored and stuck in the snow (not literally), I have a little task for you:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Your+Thoughts+on+2010+Circuits
As the calendar is somewhat sorted now, I am calling for short thoughts on each circuit, to be wrapped up in the F1 Digest previews. I've put an example in there, and there's a better explanation on the wiki page.
Will also be blogging this and plugging it later as well, but thought I would get a head start thanks to the snow.
oooh, lovely. will add a few :)
I am Jon killer of bandwidth
Afternoon
Doctor Who exhibitions are heading for RGland
http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/north-east-news/todays-evening-chronicle/2010/01/06/doctor-who-exhibition-to-be-held-in-newcastle-72703-25538055/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Go, us!
Done and done :)
Yay!
Thanking you :)
The Donington Park Museum and Café have re-opened and the Wheatcroft family are putting plans in place to reopen the circuit too.
I feel very happy :)
Ah, so you're the bleeder that's killing my connection.
Hi. ;)
Hello my good man
I'm downloading 5 110mb+ files off itunes and attempting to watch a HD program on iplayer....i've broken the internet...
no change there then
I still fail to understand how 4 inches of snow stops you driving around places? {Comment #15}
This is the land where 4 drops of rain stops people from driving around places...
I would suggest for you to move to Finland, but you people and snow don't seem to get along very well
He is not a good man. He's a very naughty boy!
:)
What gave you that impression? Snow in this country causes chaos. Snow in Finland is to be expected, no?
I still can't believe the BBC were asking people to comment on what life was like in 'Frozen Britain'!!!
Most odd - I went to the Kangaroo TV website to reserve a Kangaroo TV. And lo and behold... they weren't accepting 2010 reservations yet. At all. :O
Very odd considering they opened 2009 reservations right after the 2008 season ended... {Comment #145}
Perhaps they're upgrading the technology (or trying to work out how to let people get it in less than an hour of queuing), in which case they may not know themselves how much to charge people yet...
They needed an excuse for people to turn up to the office to process the comments. You saw Caroline Cheese on Twitter? She was dreading having to do some proper work last night in case Stoke-Fulham got cancelled!
Good. I can take my wife there at Easter now...
Yeah, she said to me she'd rather watch Stoke-Fulham or have nothing to do till midnight.
can i not use vaio for live timing? I would totally take the eee to albert park for live timing but it appears virgin is the only provider whose 3g dongle doesnt work. And guess who my provider is! {Comment #168}
Can you have a second dongle from someone else on PAYG (either by the day or month)?
They had a 45 minute news special this morning on BBC to cover the snow. They spent ten minutes discussing how schools arrive at the decision to close.
wow that was fast! I notice f1.com still doesnt have china tickets for sale {Comment #186}
That had better change soon - non-Chinese people need five weeks to get their visas cleared...
That's good news. Interesting that Gillett ran up £20 million of debt and everything he did to the circuit can be sorted for £600,000. Makes you wonder where the other £19.4 million went.
Journeyer got Shanghai tickets earlier this week
*puts pedantic hat on*
The work he did probably cost about £600k because the rest of the debt would be the work that was due to be done but never happened. Quite why he paid them in advance I dunno.
Will process ours next week once we get our renewed passports. :)
Hello, everyone.
Hello, hello, hello
However much I like the guy...

This seems a bit extreme...
RG!!!! *shakes fist*
If you have to stay home because of the snow, do you use a holiday day, or does the employer lose out? {Comment #208}
Depends on the contract. My dad's employer specifically does not cover weather-related absences from work unless the employee resides 5 miles or more from work. Most other employers don't bother with such exclusions, in which case it goes down as either a paid write-off day or (probably unpaid) day off, depending on whether the employer believes the weather was bad enough to justify the reason (decided on a case-by-case basis). In the case of this much snow, most employees will get the benefit of the doubt, with people who normally walk down one street to get to work being the main exceptions (employers are allowed to assume the employee has made reasonable efforts to get into work, including minor snow clearance, unless the employee has genuine reason not to be capable of such efforts).
:(
Ahahahahahaha.
Office:
starring Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson.
Best group ever.
Some sidewalks in Helsinki have underfloor heating to melt away the snow, have you considered to underfloorheat the British Isles?
Are you suggesting a logical way to deal with the snow so it would intervene in the British public's working day?
Absurd Kathi. Such an idea would never be tolerated in this land of hope and glory.
;)
Many areas here have already run out of grit and salt to put on the roads. We could never be organised enough to have underfloor heating.
Nah. Can't do that. Global warming.
I'm heading off to work anyways. See you all later.
Never! I'd have to find something new to entertain me during winter. *reads some more tweets/comments/posts/..*
Hmmm... Getting it is fine - especially in a China or Malaysia where crowds are small. It's returning it that's a bit difficult, because everyone goes home at the same time.
Stay safe mate.
Just had this mock up for our leaflet made....have a look, comments, thoughts please :)

That looks great Jon. The only thing I can see that I would change is on the front under Educate I would use a capital W at the start of the second sentence - Working closely with schools etc.

have fun...
looking good!
Autosport.com are now publishing F1 Racing articles in the subscriber section

Most rediculous looking race car in the world?
that is truly awful.
there was a competition to design it...and that won....
That rear wing seems to be very adjustable going by the two photos. Looks like it is designed to generate lift on the straights which makes sense as it will save power
I can't believe it! The news this lunchtime had one story that didn't involve white stuff in any way, shape or form...
Ooh, that's interesting.
so, I'm under the impression it has never snowed ever before ever in the UK before this winter. Damn you climate change!
spring 2010 for voda access in europe:
The Nexus One Phone with Vodafone wireless service. Coming soon to Europe.
wireless? {Comment #222}
In other words, it includes Bluetooth for transferring information between other phones and your computer without wires. I find it very useful, though due to the device design I have, I can't install most new programs without wires.
so, I'm under the impression it has never snowed ever before ever in the UK before this winter. Damn you climate change! {Comment #377}
The last time it snowed properly in the UK (as in, enough to disrupt services for several days) was in 1995. Lots of us are experiencing such disruption for the first time as adults.
It snowed last January (or was it Feb?). The reaction was the same.
It seems it wasn't this big for everyone last year though. Where I am there's no difference, in fact it is a bit better now...
It's like this every time. It's like the whole country has a goldfish memory. Every time it snows is like a groundhof day.
New Zealand is a bit the same I guess, but there is less people there to whine about it.
PING: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/01/06/francois-cevert/
Hi all! I'm back in the humdrum world of the office, and thought I'd drop in and check up on everyone, its been far too long.
w00t!

Just saw Eric Boulllier's pic at Big Picture. What's with the closed fists? He looks all tense and everything...
he's all smiley here though:

Exam results may keep going up but sometimes you suspect the youth of today are not so bright.

This sums up the UK's weather problems beautifully. We can't organise a husky race because of a little snow.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/highlands_and_islands/8443532.stm
Thats just the minority.
The bright ones? ;)
Flatmate number 16 is Estonian.
That's new. I never had a Estonian flatmate before.
I already forgot her name again. I'm soo bad at getting to know new people especially when they move into my living space.
Why is the Stig driving it?
New Zealand? I only seem to remember Dunedin having this trouble because they have such steep hills!
He looks like he has been handcuffed and they have been photoshopped out!
Classic
you should record her name and upload to dropio :)
So, what are Estonians like?
Southland does the same thing and they have no hills. And Christchurch, but their snow is infrequent.
Finns.
She already thinks I'm a little strange...
Ah. But Dunedin is always the most memorable because the TV station sets up a camera at an intersection and waits for the crashes. Always loads of people who can't drive in the snow!
after one afternoon?
Her boyfriend has a nice car #priorities
She's from Eastern Europe - of course you are strange to her ;)
:D
It never takes that long for people to decide that about me :P
She belongs to the Russian minority in Estonia so no, not like Finns
boo that camera, its in the absolute highest place and then the news says 'look how much snow Dunedin had' and I look out my window and go 'wheeeeere?'
I'm efficient.
By the way, the train is late again by at least half an hour AGAIN! :(
:D
Vorsprung Durch Teknik? #sorrykathi
in my head she is totally Linka from Captain Planet
Let me tell you - they are a clever lot are those reporters ;)
Oooh she's Russian? I like Russians!
I like Thai people. They have better food #priorities
Russians have better vodka
don't care. I don't drink. #sorryBassano
Then you are right then ;)
oh yay! backup in Spa!
...yet?
I used to go to rock festivals. You know the kind where you sleep in mud and build castles out of beer cans and I didn't get drunk. So good luck.
I've been following Robert Llewellyn (of Scraphead Challenge fame) on Twitter for ages and he's talked about "Carpool" lots, so i thought i'd check it out..anyway...Leo's on Carpool, it's really good, and theres lots of other good ones too!!
It's "Robert Llewellyn's CarPool" on iTunes, really good.
Check it out
oh.
Did you ever go to Roskilde?
Do you not drink at all, or just not drink to excess?
No, it's too far.
Thai food is very verynice
Oh bugger. I went last year for a day trip. It was my first festival and it was coooool...
oh my, 4am. And I'm not working from home tomorrow. Exit stage left!
Midnight was ages ago... :O
I'm off to bed too. Night all! :)
You can also see it at http://www.llewtube.com/
gavin mentioned this over on f1minute, but if anyone out there has a wordpress blog, the following shortcode will embed the latest f1 minute video:
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAWEDZrTcsA]
just copy and paste that into a new post and wordpress does the rest... wish it were that easy back in my day.
Hello everyone! I think you can all stop calling me accident prone now! :D
who us?
#sidepodspace
The shuttle Endeavour was rolled out to the launch pad today. The launch is not until 7th February.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
You managed a whole day without injuring yourself?
Yes, as I've gained the reputation as being the 'Johnny Knoxville of Sidepodcast'. I think today has proved that I don't get injured all the time, even if I do silly stuff.
as if we'd suggest such a thing ;)
No, not much you don't!
Anyway, today, I spent quality Sixth Form time sledging down some of the scariest drops we could find. I had two big accidents, one of which was me digging into the snow with my shoulder after the sledge tipped and I got thrown out and rolled 5 or 6 times before finally stopping.
nothing like him. nothing at all.
Ah, but this time I wasn't injured!
Hello all, after the rain last night we did have snow but not enough to prevent me from going to work. We were allowed to home early as it hasn't stopped all day. Looking forward to what tomorrow may bring. Glad to see Tom managed not to injure himself although he seems to have made every effort to do so ;)
yay! snow is ace (mostly).
I watched the video on the site and it's brilliant. Will it be in the existing F1 Minute feed in iTunes or will there be a new one to subscribe to for video?
there's a new one, because lots of people embed the audio player on their site and adding video would break it.
you can subscribe here: http://feeds.f1minute.com/f1minute/video
Thank you, will look out for the iTunes feed but will watch on the site until then. Really looking forward to the next one.
apple can be quite slow, if you copy that url and click in itunes:
advanced > subscribe to podcast
it'll appear as normal.
Yay :) it's downloading now.
w00t! we're working on yesterday's today. will plug when done.
Ever jumped a sledge? I have now, recommend it to those who can withstand a hard landing!
Sure. Once.
I get worried when I come home and find podcasts entitled "Britons can't take food for granted" waiting for me :S
hello sidepodpeople
Hello, how's things?
Hello guillepeople! :)
Just playing the first one now, Richard Herring. Brilliant!
just passing my last day off proper vacations. I'll travel home tomorrow. :-)
:D
Hi guys. Not had trains delayed today, but also been quite busy by the week's standards, so no Doo-hickey at work now. Ah well.
and I saw yesterday Avatar in 3D. Really really stunned by it; visually perfect movie.

evening lukeh
Very slick! Love it. I take it the audio feed will continue and will use the audio from the video?
Tell me when you think it is ready / more than playing around, and I will plug away.
The audio version isn't going anywhere.
"Flatmate number 16 is Estonian."
Forgive me Kathi but this had elements of Shallow Grave, one of the best films of all time... and the funny sequence of the guys interviewing potential flatmates....
it's as ready as it'll ever be! we'll blog about the process and plans etc, once we've caught the video up with the audio podcast.
Ok. Just keeping options open. :-)
I plan to watch the videos but would like to keep something embedded on my site, I'm not sure if audio would be better for that or not.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
I stepped into a warm house.
has anyone seen mr. woodwiss and is he doing thursday thoughts this week?
SCOTT!!! Will Fb him
Here is video of a Japanese researching whaling vessel deliberately ramming Sea Shepherd's Ady Gil - incidentally this is against an Australian High Court ruling against whaling operations in the Australian Antarctic Territory.

Yes, hello, I'm here.
Gimme a sec, I'll think of something.
thanking you.
I think I should apply for the BBC as a news reader as I'm sure bbc news 24 has been like this for most of today
Am going to record next episode of The Feeder Series in the next few days, is there any issues/things that people think should be addressed?
Awesome. :D
Nice tribute from Shell for Kimi on youtube...

OK, so my Thursday Thoughts question is:
"With the raft of regulation changes in the past couple of years and new ones on the way, are we seeing a return to the good old days of F1?"
Off you go, then. :P
Worst but best joke ever?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0FULHGwPkw ;) or not
It will never be "the good old days" until Cosworth get a V8 engine revving sweetly. And reliably. ;)
This is Wednesday
Urm... I thought we're supposed to answer it tomorrow?
I was asked for a question now.
Are you not blogging it tomorrow?
If I have time, yes. :)
Cool. People can respond to the blog post then.
But I wanna respond NOW!
*pouts*
You could if you lived in Australia! :P
Simple answer.....blog it now, but put the post date as tomorrow. simples
Oh dear. I still laughed though because of the spontaneity of it. I imagine all scientific places to be like that.
Convicts....
Wait, this isn't a private forum, I can't get away with that unless it's to the resident Aussie. :D
Finally wrote about Doctor Who: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/01/06/the-end-of-time/
can you blog it now, and schedule it for tomorrow? also, in the post could you expand on the question a little, it's a bit vague. especially as i call 2005 the good old days of f1.
Yup, I'll see what I can do.
I am going to sleep lying down before I fall asleep at my desk. :)
thanking you.
Whooops.. I only meant to write a small comment... sorry :(
Heheh :)
It really is my head ping.
That should have been the Doctor's last words
Weird.
I do have this fob watch that I....
;)
Have you guys discussed how the first Merc is going to be RB1... how weird is that?....
news to me. why would they do that?
All i can think of is RB named after ross brawn maybe... even then it'd be the 2nd model, technically....
You are correct.... RB1 is named after Ross Brawn but it sure feels like it should be a Red Bull....
I don't know why, but I find that a bit silly.
if they named it the f2010, ferrari would be livid.
as should red bull be.
Wasn't this year's Brawn the RB1?

Evening all,
Tonight I have published the next in the series of Driver Analyses - this time it's a short post on fastest laps. Hope you like it: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/12/31/2009-in-review-fastest-laps/
The next post will be about 'Driver Consistency', which is what the majority of my posts have been about this year. Look out for that one soon!
i (heart) leo's videos. just watching this:
http://twit.cachefly.net/video/mbw/mbw0174/mbw0174_h264b_864x480_500.mp4
we need bigger live video.
Oh lord.
:D
You'd have to carry advertising too, based on the first couple of minutes.
I think people don't mind advertising as long as it's relevant.
i skip his ads, and instead donate.
It doesn't matter how "relevant" it is. I'm never going to buy something off an advert. Why should I have to spend time watching them? I don't really mind static ads on websites so much in that I can just ignore them.
Adblocker works for me :)
Adblocker no work in Chrome. :(
because otherwise you wouldnt be watching it, (dependant on what you're watching) adverts pay for what you're enjoying
you don't have to buy anything, the point is primarily to increase brand awareness.
which renders them pointless. and is why we've removed them.
if our donations plugging thing doesn't work out, it's likely that we'd come back mid-roll and pre-roll ads in audio, video, live shows etc. simply because they are the only things that generate any sensible form of income.
you can skip them, as i do. but you can't do that if it's live.
no in an iphone app...
I wonder why that is? Another reason not to use it.
Today i put my first bit of video on blip.tv and had to decide whether to put adverts on or not, it was a surprisingly hard choice
yes it does.
Awwww :( No such thing as free money.... Nick seems to think people actually click on adverts which I think is mental behaviour....
Enough people must do though, otherwise they wouldn't bother with the ads. Also, Google's whole business model depends on people clicking on ads.
have to say, it's rather good. am trying to convince christine to drop firefox and use chrome instead.
More people keep switching. I wish they'd hurry up and release Firefox 4. or even 3.6 for that matter!
i don't think it'll help much sadly. i love firefox to pieces, but webkit it just better and developing faster.
Does it do drop-down RSS lists on the toolbar like Firefox?
umm, not sure what you mean?
Chrome is pants on an old computer. I have XP and a gig of RAM and Chrome is the memory Viking on my PC - it just storms in and pillages the megabytes!
So for now I have switched back to Firefox. When I get my new PC I will use Chrome again...
You can add an RSS feed to the bookmarks toolbar. When you click on it, it shows the headlines from the articles in the feed.
that's very odd, it's soo much faster than firefox on a mac.
It's pants for RSS - I can never get it to redirect to the 'Choose your Feed Reader' thingy like Firefox does!
oh. no idea. have never used that it any browser.
This is on the Knackertron 2000 though...
I'll probably be the last person left using it at this rate :D
One thing I like is how Chrome is already on version 4 (almost) when Firefox is on 3.5
that's true, but google didn't have to develop a html rendering engine, they just plugged one in.
appears to be very multicore aware. ace if you have the processor, but i guess the opposite effect if you don't.
It's a Dualcore AMD something or other...
It looks like this:
RSS Example
Indeed.
As long people ditch IE and use either Chrome or Firefox, I'm not bothered ;)
you find that useful? google reader can put that in a nice list for you and hide the stuff you've read. you can share favourites and aggregate multiple feed into groups.
i will second and third that :)
Well I like it.
Or Safari or Opera, or any other browser
understood. i can't see it as a compelling reason to recommend one browser of another.
it's probably something an extension developer could make though.
Although looking at these figures, IE6's share got slightly bigger in November 09.
Actualy it is more use for sites like the BBC. I don't really use it for SPC
and them ;)
It's "I cant say a name properly so help me please" time...
Anton Nebylitskiy
ta
(by the way, i know how to say Anton :P)
Well, I know I am no use whatsoever, but I would say neh-bih-lit-skee. Therefore, say it the exact opposite of that :)
thanks, :) i think that's what i decided
:)
http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/01/06/plugtastic-time-f1-minute/

and whilst we're plugging: http://www.f1minute.com/2010/01/06/sauber-sunday/
B-O-B. Done.
We have a Polish guy at work whose name is something like Jedrezej and nobody could say it, so I decided we should call him Bob. He dislikes me now :(
Yay.
:)
did the wordpress shortcode work btw?
Yes it does :D
nice one.
Hey again guys, been doing some laps around the Nordschleife in a Brabham BT7. Hopeless really, involved in 2 collisions in the race, none of which were my fault. Gladys needed a loose grid and couldn't give us one, cheeky mere.
Love the f1 minute with vid...
Thanks guys...
Just one request... could you do the odd WRC minute so I get some pics of Kimi occasionally?....
Or any excuse will do!....
On the F1 Minute video: like the idea, but #needsmorechristine.
;)
hehe. we have wrc footage (much more accommodating than bernie), no kimi yet though.
noted.
I imagine Christine has done all the "welcome to F1 minute, it's the xth of January" and "that's it for now join us tomorrow" links in a single session. They can then be edited around the day's news footage.
although you must be getting kinda sick of her. every single day, in words, in audio and now in video?
Next you'll be saying there's no santa.
I don't need to, I have a cynical 6 year old.
i cannot imagine where he gets that from?
ROFL! Best comment of the day so far!
Were you proud or gutted when they figured it out?
there's nothing find out is there? unless you're accusing norad of making stuff up?
NORAD would never do that. Governments always tell the truth ;)
Last year we had a neighbor come up to us at the bus stop and say "could you please tell Ethan NOT to tell other kids that Santa doesn't exist?". He was 6 at the time as well.
I've just done an interview with the guy who's heading up the campaign to save donnington :D that were fun
The Facebook guy? Ooh is that a Feeder Series Exclusive?
the wheatcrofts?
Mr C, that's just trumped yours as "Best Comment of the day".
Woohoo! I joined a Save Donington facebook group today. Now I can only assume Donington park is going to no. 1 in the charts against Simon
Cowellevil pop music debauchery plan to create a giant mockery of a legendary circuityeah the facebook guy, really nice chap
Gah, strikethrough fail :(
tis okay, i'm here all week.
Better. preview ftw. :)
try the viel
I forgot Gillete this time. Ah I give up. #textissoweb2.0
i must've missed something. didn't the wheatcrofts say they're already working on that?
"I can assure the circuit’s many fans and supporters and the motor racing world generally that we, along with our legal team, are doing all we can to make sure the site is fully operational as soon as possible."
we must be in web 3.0 now? 2.0 is so last decade.
The Donington discussion got brought up in work this afternoon with a colleage and he mentioned to me how hypocritical it is to support Donington after wanting it to lose the British GP
Surely that's not the point though? This is concerning saving the circuit and it's heritage thanks to the work of an imbecile, and as far as I'm concerned even though I want Silverstone for F1 there's no way I'd want Donington to simply disappear from motorsport!
interesting thought. i guess no-one wanted to see it ruined. we just didn't want to get there via public transport.
yup, and it's a support campaign saying to donnington that donnington is a worthwhile investment, and that we'll support it
Neither can I
It's not hypocritical at all. It's perfect sense. Donington has always been a better circuit than Silverstone but Gillett's plan was stupid from day 1. Not wanting Silverstone to lose its race because of some moron's fantasy seems sensible to me.
"although you must be getting kinda sick of her. every single day, in words, in audio and now in video?"
But "me"... you get that and more every day and I guess you aren't sick of her....
Hehe, well I can see his argument though, it's just two different issues for me. It's kinda like the Brazilian GP last year, whereas no matter how much I liked Jenson and support him, I wanted him not to beat Rubens at any cost!
Exactly. Donington was fine as it was until Bernie and Simon the Muppet got involved!
Ha, I wouldn't count on that.
Night guys ;)
Well, his logic is that he realises that people go on expeditons to the North Pole, it is very cold and there are no houses there because they can't be built on the ice. Therefore, no one can live there all year round, therefore Father Christmas can't live there.....
We're very proud.
Night Gavin
Night Gavin
Well atleast he worked it out for himself
Our 6 year old isn't so tactless. His 8 year old sister on the other hand...
except that quite clearly he does.
As Christine would say: Oh Lord.
I personally think he has a summer house in the Carribean
"Exactly. Donington was fine as it was until Bernie and Simon the Muppet got involved!"
Don't forget it had lost the MotoGP to Silverstone...
It may be that they desperately needed to update the track and the Bernie deal was the only possible way.... and a couple of years earlier, when money wasn't tight, they may just have succeeded....
I think it was a desperate last roll of the dice....
He has to live somewhere. He sees a lot of the world at Christmas, I can't blame him for wanting to be somewhere remote the rest of the year.
me neither. i'd do the same.
There was no way Gillett's plan was ever going to work. I only hope the Wheatcrofts got a few rent payments from him before his company went bust.
True - as Dave Allen said: Father Christmas visits every house in the world on Christmas Eve. He consumes a mince pie and a glass of sherry in each house and you wonder why we don't see him for another year?
Now I've seen that documentary The Santa Clause and I noticed how mr Santa gradually grew in weight over the year and a beard, so for all we know, he could be an office worker in the middle of America
Or the UK.
He has the technology to get right round the world in a day. How difficult can it be to run a house with a cloaking device with that same technology?
Maybe he likes the cold.
"There was no way Gillett's plan was ever going to work. I only hope the Wheatcrofts got a few rent payments from him before his company went bust."
Peeps said the same thing about those guys who borrowed tons of dosh to buy Liverpool....
It all comes down to timing and also, as I said, it looks like it was a last desperate roll of the dice.... they were bust if they didn't try it on so had nothing to lose....
I don't think they were bust if they didn't get the F1 race. They lost Moto Gp which is one major event but Donington is not like other circuits. They put on events like major music events which probably make them more money than their racing operations.
The Wheatcrofts reckon £600,000 will see them operational again so they didn't need to go down the Gillett route.
Guys, I'm gonna head to bed before my brain hurts. The early starts I've had this week are taking their toll on me. Night all!
See ya TM
Santa is a Romulan?
catch you tomorrow chap.
Night TM
Good night
Maybe that is why he has the beard
"The Wheatcrofts reckon £600,000 will see them operational again so they didn't need to go down the Gillett route."
You are forgetting that the Wheatcrofts don't have one of the major expenses Gillett had....
Rent....
No-one would disagree that the track needed investment and I don't think it could generate enough to pay rent plus invest in renovation without a big ticket event.....
As a disguise, obviously.
"He has the technology to get right round the world in a day. How difficult can it be to run a house with a cloaking device with that same technology?"
Guys this is obviously nothing to do with Romulans...
Santa uses the Tardis... heavily disguised...
He is actually Doctor Who.... the real one....
ah-ha!
Spent too much time watching the BBC Doctor Who station idents then?
"Spent too much time watching the BBC Doctor Who station idents then?"
Actually I don't really "get" David Tennant as Doctor Who.... so didn't watch it much...
He was a bit comic book for me...
I preferred Christopher Ecclestone...
Time zones confuse me...
If something is at 6:30PDT (I dont even know where that is) what will it be our time?
Hey everyone.
Good evening everyone... No Sidepodcast all day... Bad Times!
That is pacific daylight time. It's the time zone of Seattle, San Fransisco, and LA. It is currently +8 hours from GMT.
hey dan, alex.
Ahh... I assumed it might be american. Thanks Dan.
For example it is 3:00 PM here in Olympia, WA.
I just went back as far as I could on comments and couldn't get back to my last comment. That normally doesn't happen in the off season.
Being very busy at work means no SPC :(
There is no way Gillett could have paid for the work he needed to do to get a GP even if he had the GP. His finances were based on fantasy.
Good eveningtide
two days in a row i haven't managed to read them all. there's mr. roy guest post receiving good reviews and i haven't had chance to look at that either.
It's crazybonks!
That is Pacific time or US west coast ish. Add 8 hours and you get our time
It does take quite a lot of time to delete 56GB :D
Interesting (but not surprising) graph
http://www.britsonpole.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/F1drivers_graph.jpg
tsk! I couldn't believe that. Naughty naughty!
http://www.worldtimezone.com/
You can also use the clock on the iPod Touch/iPhone to set the time in multiple locations. For example, mine says it's 10:05 tomorrow in Sydney and 15:06 in Cupertino
Right I best love you and leave you. Sorry it was a real hello goodbye. Seems to be all I can manage at the moment.
Loved the Joe show. Just caught up by the way.
Really should finish this Piquet post and post it.
ooh even handier!
joe show?
Night Alex.
An Aside with...
You know, the one you present?
:)
yeah that one :)
Thought that said Cuper-Timo.
*Goes back to lurking.
cripes. was expecting you to say f1 minute video. the joe show was last decade ;)
Hehe. Cupertino is where Apple's HQ is by the way.
I have madly jumped around a bit. So have already listened to both in audio shows. Just takes different moods.
ahhhhhh.
Any good quick dog names for my doggie on my game? I refuse to call it the default name of 'Dog' - that's a rubbish name
pup?
dog is an awesome name.
Mr. X
What breed of dog is it?
Yeah but my idea was 'Awesome Dog' at first but then it displayed 'Dog' and it made him seem less awesome, and reminds me of the Awesome Bar in Firefox which is not awesome at all!
Timo
Some fantasy breed in the game, although it's definitely a dog. As it's name was Dog.
Badoer
hehe. animals should be named what they are. dog is perfect if you ask me.
He's on to something
*Hits self for not thinking of it first
:D
Bye Alex
Hello All
how about amazini?
hello everyone :)
:D :D :D
the girl talks sense ;)
No matter how much I want to fight it, that's an awesome name.
Good idea!
;)
In spite of Lou's suggestion, I have decided to call him...
Turtles.
evening.
What about Cat?
hi lou.
There's always the classic 'Deefer'
how is the world of sidepodcast? everyone alright?
i love the f1minute video thing mr & mrs c, tis genius! :D
What's this I hear about F1 Minute Vodcasts?
Sounds good
I like that.
Hi Lou
This might help (or not)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/lukeh-tweets-png
all feedback greatly appreciated, 2nd one coming soon.
ah! hadnt seen that one
Will check it out then
Genius. I was going to suggest Mclaren MP4-24
....oh Un-see it! I thought you already knew. :P
Gah it's like futurama.
You've seen it, you can't un-see it...
i'd seen the amazini but not the others ;)
Words AND moving pictures in under a minute - perfect!
Much approval and applause to you both
I need to send you an email on app thoughts
tell me you're coming to spa and tell me you're drinking.
*hides*
:D meannny
yay. ta.
please do. am probs waiting for the iSlate announcement though.
I have no idea what you are talking about.
It sounds like some sort of witchcraft, when you put it like that. :)
the mac tablet.
you know the thing apple leaked information about to WSJ today?
the one that will be revealed later this month and put on sale in march?
the iSlate.
They could get burned at the stake for that, ya know!
:D
No, you've lost me.
No idea
Nope
Still none the wiser.
Has this been mentioned?
http://www.bmw-sauber-f1-team.ch/en/
youre gonna try come to spa though?
Is that basically Apple's advert?
oooooh!
Of course :) it all balances on the financial side of things
could be :)
our videos look tiny on the iphone, but they we rock a 10" tablet!
*they will
okay good ;)
you're going to buy us all apple tables? :)
d'oh! TableTs!
They'll be here in 2012...
:)
Oooh, edible tables, mmmm
heh.
Sent and copied Christine in too
Treat it as research and 'for your consideration'
[Till Jan 27th ;)]
hehe. indeedy, thanking ya.
There are Daily stories about the legendary [and allged] device-to-be. It's worse than the off season in December
the wsj info looks very legit, although i'm suspicious about the price tag.
Time to head off. Night all.
see ya sir.
Same here. night all. lotsa love
Saw the headline on the Mac Daily App
The word is that Apple use them for 'controlled leaks'
G'night Lukeh & RG
night
looks like it in this case.
bye rg.
what price are they giving?
$1,000
I like the Wall Street Journal. I used to love it but then Robert Murdoch took over the paper. The quality has gone down a bit. Still one of the three or four best newspapers in America.
Analysts have been pitching it at between an off-contract iPhone and a White Mackbook
$600 - $1000 region
My subscription last year was $140 for the print edition.
New post finally done for 'A Little Bit... Piquet', on Flav's escape and Peter Windsor's latest comments: http://wp.me/pKGQm-o
IF it exists, surely it'd have to be cheaper than a MacBook otherwise it'd be silly
night RG and Lukeh.
Sorry, misread the topic.
Great minds think alike. I am about 3/4 of the way through a post. Actually, it is more of an open letter to Peter Windsor.
i'm past the "if" stage now, but to me the price has to be lower, unless their release a budget and pro model.
good man.
When was the last time Apple released a new product and everyone thought: 'that's good value, I'll have one of those NOW'
If it's above £500 I'm buying a Black MacBook on eBay or a shiny 13" Pro on the refurb store
That was the hardest to write, I had not much motivation this week!
never in my experience.
but that's £624. unless it comes subsidised, it's too prosumer.
morning all
*waves*
I won't buy a subsidized machine, I just want Wifi
It may be on or off contract, pick your price
hello :) have you won the lottery yet?
i'd like to go to monza..:)We will just have to wait and see what gets announced, if there is anything to announce that is.
By the way, it's almost 2 years since the Macbook Air was first released.
Hi Amy
How's sunny Melbourne?
Very true, a great flagship machine for headline grabbing, at least
that's not a sensible strategy in light of all the information that's available. that would be a bit stupid. am happy to plan ahead on this one for sidepodcast on the islate.
if we're wrong we can stick it on an android tablet instead, but i'm betting on not being wrong.
never met a person with one.
Strong rumours of iPhone OS 4.0 SDK being announced too
would make sense. xcode will need a refesh too.
Most people I know: Sense > Money, not vice versa
:)
It's a party trick, that's why. Does anybody actually want a laptop that thin? I'd be scared that it'd snap if I had one.
So are we thinking, one year with this name and engine and then switch back to Ferrari lumps?
Hope they've sorted out the reliabilty issues
It's the weight saving that folk like apparently
a few people at school have them... both girls have extremely rich parents though.... soo....
It just seems a bit extreme to me, and rather expensive.
As Lou says, it's probably a status thing
Most likely.
Engadget reporting rumours that the SDK "includes a "simulator" for reformatting / scaling applications to a new, tablet-sized screens"
The final Apple related item for tonight from me, I heard today that Apple have enough cash in the bank to purchase Dell tomorrow, if they wanted
:D
12 years ago:
And at the Gartner Symposium and ITxpo97 here today, the CEO of competitor Dell Computer added his voice to the chorus when asked what could be done to fix the Mac maker. His solution was a drastic one.
"What would I do? I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders," Michael Dell said before a crowd of several thousand IT executives.
with any luck the timeline will be:
- sdk update on 26th/27th
- slate release in march
given everyone enough time to build apps virtually.
(also conveniently feb will be the first time this year, we'll have free time)
and iPhone 4 in June
if they stuck a camera in the itouch, i'd be happy :)
Agreed, that's the one reason I some times wish my Touch is an iPhone. I'd like to be able to take a picture and upload it to somewhere instantly.
i think i'm one of the only people who enjoys having separate gadgets for things.. a camera, a phone, and an ipod.. having them all in one upsets me.
They'll likely go 3.2MB [or lower] in the Touch and 5.0MB in the Phone this summer
The iPod Touch is supposedly a fantastic way to get folk introduced to the App Store, then they're hooked and ready to upgrade
I wouldn't replace a decent camera with an iPod. It'd just be the sort of one for quick shots and uploading to Twitter etc.
The Karma train rolls into town :)
see i can't even use a phone for twitpic photos either... well.. sometimes i do, but i prefer using an actual camera.
The best camera is the one that you have with you at the time
Yep, and if it's a rubbish phone camera, so be it!
I can't, but I wish I could.
I love the iPhone for it's all-in-one capabilities but I still use a decent digi SLR & a larger capacity iPod at times
Depends what I want to carry with me
i'd rather carry separate gadgets in my bag every day.. but i can see the convenience of having it all in one.
I carry an N95 half decent 5MP camera, web browsing, sat nav, and a decent phone too ;-)
Are they still going to use BMW engines?
BMW have pulled out totally, they'll be on Cosworth power, I believe.
If they are calling themselves BMW Sauber, I would think it's quite likely
is it not ferrari?
My mistake, they're going to have Ferrari engines.
I'm believing little this year until Mar 12th
Team Sauber F1 is the name I remember
It's temporary, they haven't applied to change the name yet.
it's too late to change the name for the 2010 season now, isn't it?
Don't think so, look at Brawn, how many weeks before the season opener were they before they became Brawn?
Not what the website is saying
http://www.bmw-sauber-f1-team.ch/en/
thought you could with confirmation from everyone
That's most likely the case.
they first shook the car down on march 5th... so i think they were announced a little time before that...
the teams agreed to the change before xmas. they just didn't specify what the name could be. it was a special case.
not that there couldn't be a different type of special case here i guess.
mayb they're looking for a new website address since sauber-f1.com is already taken by Mr Mark Sullivan with an expiry date of 2010-02-03
Title is not just in the web address
If the team name changes, they have to ask no one and still receive last year's takings
Right, I'd better get to sleep, doesn't look like snow will cancel my lovely day at Sixth Form.
True but just think they could be there going
"lets call ourselves Team Sauber F1"
"We can't somebody owns that web address."
"what if we have a hyphen?"
"Taken"
"Underscore?"
....
see ya.
Do they have a Title sponsor yet since they don't have Petronas?
http://www.sauberf1.com/ is available
We'll find out at the end of the month when they launch, I guess
time for sleep, night all! xx
Night Lou
night lou
later.
Bye Lou
Cyber squatters
Well I'm off to bed. Night all
later mojoker.
Everyone has there price
Point is, I'm sure there are plenty of Sauber URL variations
Anyone fancy 2lb Wii-mote add-ons for that Wii Fit work out?
G'night Mo'Jo
Exactly what i need. Just so I'm SURE they'll DEFINITELY go through the TV if I let them go!
Why can't I DM someone without them following me first?
Is this some anti-stalking Twitter legislation?
I just left a comment on the F1 Minute video, 'cos it looked wrong not having anyone comment there and I wanted to give a little bit of feedback.
There's a blog plug on the way too but I think I'll have to finish that tomorrow, I've started it but got sidetracked and really should go to bed.
Sleep is for wimps ;)
It's irriating. When i was in London last month I wanted to text Lukeh and Lou, but not having their numbers, knew that i could DM them and they'd get a text..well...i got Lou's username wrong and Lukeh's came back saying he wasn't following me...
*BARROWMAN* *Shakes Fist*
The first week back after the break is a killer! Especially when you're half-covering for someone who's on holiday..
At least I don't usually need to leave until 8.45, unlike most people..
"I would also enjoy a job that involves setting the cars up for races, e.g trying to get rid of a handling problem like oversteer or understeer. For example a job that I would like to do is chief engineer like Jean Todt from Ferrari or technical director like Nick Fry for Bar-Honda. "
Am searching for my latest CV and found this from when i was younger. bless me, so innocent ;)
I also need to plug Jon's podcast at some point :-)
Is why I arrange mobile no. exchanges prior to all SPC pub-a-thons
[Twitter FAIL]
http://www.feederseries.net/?p=538
ahem
This was on the off chance as i knew they were in London at the same time. Alls i wanted to do was let them know about the big fun fairy markety thing, was lovely.
you changed your website again!
I can agree with that
Am so thankful this isn't an earlies week
5am alarms in Jan, Week One = nightmare
thanking you muchly chap.
twitter sucks.
thats the final final one. it's a new url, i got a wordpress.org hosted one. it'll stay like that for a while now
For future reference, tell the comments to pass it on :)
I like it.
Can you just change 'Donnington' to 'Donington' please.. pet peeve ;-)
I was going to DM on the subject of the email and thought a normal tweet wouldn't be appropriate
[Is all too html for Bassano}
oooh sorry, didnt realise i got it wrong
nononono, thats the beauty. theres no coding involved. certain hosts do a 1-click-wordpress installation, so i really didnt have to do anything. you just download your theme, then download it onto wordpress, bobs your uncle (potentially)
it's worst for me, as i don't follow anyone and instead list everyone.
severe lack of joined up thinking from the developers.
This is my phone...
http://www.telefon.at/images/big/nokia_6230_graphit.jpg
I can't imagine that even mobile doohickey would work on it
no worries. it's not a big a pet peeve as buying a classic race course, tearing it to shreds and then abandoning it
I don't know why but mobile and 'puter typing are killing spelling skills in the modern world
Probably the output speed
[Am not talking about txt spk peepz]
does it connect to the web?
indeedy. grrr
anyway, all fixed. thank you :)
People have always mixed up the 'n's in Donington though, really easy to do
yeah i think so. i remember downloading something off the beeb site a while ago, although i had to unlock the phone, so im not sure it does work on 'nternet, as it still says "t-zones" even though im on o2
It should. I had a Nokia of what I'm guessing is similar vintage until Christmas.
ahh. if you can get to spc, the mobile page should work.
On that subject, didn't Wheatcroft's son pledge to restore Donnington?
[sorry if this is the subject in case, am WAY behind on blog reading]
it's because you dont have to get it right on social networking thingys.
Oh I know what I wanted to ask. Is there a logo I can thieve for F1 Minute (and for Jon's show too)?
But... that makes it: Doh-ning-ton!
English is a stupid language to learn, [and spell] isn't it?
http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs189.snc3/19651_269464266270_269388571270_4914048_4505898_n.jpg
Only in Waldock World do comments appear in Doohickey but not LCLT :)
That's the bit that puts me off ;)
really? show's up for mee
err, yes. but it was a 5am thing and it'll change when we get more time:
http://static.f1minute.com/images/f1minutevideo_600x600.jpg
(no sniggering)
Who says?
I'm a [failing] spelling/grammar Nazi
Thanks
S'just how it is. Forums, Twitter, Facebook, Myspace; they all make it more socially acceptable to not be a grammar bully about it. You must accept this ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/milka-duno-jpg
Did Lukeh do the nose?
I'll stop bullying when they get it right ;)
There is NO excuse
We'll be a nation of Tricia Viewers before long!
be? ;)
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/nokialogo10-22-png
It's a great day when you can take your GCSE and ALEVEL grades off your CV and just go "yep yep, i got a GCSE in French"
#confidential
very nearly failed it
Right, I'm off. I knew the end was nigh
Hanoi, here I come
I got a 'G' in art
100% course work, talked through 98% of it
[chose it for photography then teech left :(]
booo
He was such a sound fella too
Hope he went on to bigger and better things
Have you Googled him?
Mr Carter?
Hmm, maybe this needs some investigation, good call
Oh wow! There was a really famous film made about him...I think it was called Coach Carter.... ;)
Gotta sleep.Night all
'night Jon Boy
it's been a while...
Night
My open letter to Peter Windsor.
[reading now]
A good start:
"I criticize because I care."
[a theory I subscribe to, wholeheartedly]
Now that I have that off my chest, how is everyone?
Just commenting on your post
But good. And you Dan?
Alright... stuck at work for a while I wait for one of my VP's give me the blessing to send something out. Grrr...
Done
Sangiovese made that hard!
Arghh, the anticipation. I hate that!
Was thoughtfully & intelligently said, by the way, I hope he gets to read it
Thanks.
We do love Yank-bashing on this side of the pond but we're also an undying supporter of the underdog
Incidentally, I hope you're looking out for the first image to capture a USF1 overtaking manouevre for your blog header picture :)
Don't worry, it's a two way street. People are always afraid of what they don't understand.
I don't think they are a entirely an underdog. They were the first new team to launch, had a backer, and all of the US to draw sponsorship dollars from. If they fail, they need to look in the mirror.
I just would like to get even a a photo of a car. A overtake in this field might be too much to ask for.
I agree with most of that but F1 new starters usually have a difficult fresher year
Not being the second two cars will give you a chance of success on that front
Ha.
REALLY!? ;)
wait, he said something about the chassis?
This is what he said about the chassis.
"And the first chassis – top, bottom and nose – sits upon the Bay Cast flat plate in the R&D shop; it looks gorgeous. Soon we will be fitting all the electrical components, spring/damper units and suspension arms; the front and rear wing main planes are nearly finished and over in California Kenny Hill and Gordon Kimble are not too far away from completing the first batches of axles, hubs and bearing clusters. The car grows, in other words, with every passing day."
sidepodcast supports:
- bourdais
- davidson
- buemi
- franck
sidepodcast doesn't support:
- schumacher
i'd call that a responding yes :)
oh, I was referring to the Yank bashing ;)
