Saturday has dawned, bright and sunny. Well, maybe. I haven't seen the weather yet, but let us know what it's doing in your neck of the woods! There's testing ahead of us next week in Jerez but it's not looking good weather wise, so we need to brush up on our forecasting skills. Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • Some comments yesterday picked up on pictures posted in the latest edition of Racecar Engineering, that have been featured on a US F1 fan blog. They give a fascinating insight into what goes on inside the car, despite the fact that it looks like the driver's leg is broken in a really uncomfortable way. It's nice to see technical drawings that don't scare people like me away.
  • We did a bit of a catch up on F1 Big Picture yesterday, and posted this cute little picture of Nick Heidfeld. With his new job at Mercedes, it was about time we featured a Nick pic, and I have to say, seeing the poor guy in a big field all by himself makes me feel compassion for him. Bless Nick.
  • Sadly, it seems that the Only One Timo Glock blog curated by RG has had to shut its doors. This is bad news, of course, but no one can say that RG doesn't have his priorities in the right place. He still has the Northern Waffler blog to, er, waffle on, and as ever, our doors are always open to any guest posts about Mr Glock or otherwise. Keep it up, RG.

That should do it for now. Let us know what you're up to with your weekend and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

  • me06/02/2010 at 00:08

    Is there a private league?

nope, but if anyone fancies setting one up, we'll join.

Seems to be a mixture of Norwegian and Dutch! The same Peter van Merksteijn that ran a Porsche LMP2 recently?

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 00:26

The things people think are healthy today will be unhealthy in ten years time so eat what you like. When I was a kid you were supposed to eat lots of red meat, white bread and eggs.

  • lou06/02/2010 at 00:55

I know I don't have a cholesterol problem. I don't eat meat but I'd definitely class bread and egg in the healthy category as long as you don't fry them.

I thought eggs were bad due to cholesterol and white bread had all sorts of bad things in it

  • startledbunny06/02/2010 at 00:57

What are you saying? That's not healthy?!

Well I'll think twice before having that Steak & Egg Sandwich in the morning for Breakfast.

  • paul06/02/2010 at 00:57

  • Alison06/02/2010 at 00:58

I thought eggs were bad due to cholesterol and white bread had all sorts of bad things in it

They reckon white bread is too processed so that makes it more "sugary" rather than slower releasing wholemeal. It all seems very faddish to me though.

The cholesterol thing is true but as long as you don't go nuts.... egg is good for you.

  • paul06/02/2010 at 00:58

I think it is like management consultants. They make up one set of rules then when everyone who is interested has bought the books about them they have to invent a new set. So whatever is healthy today will be unhealthy in a few years or the experts won't get back on TV.

    Is this a wedding or a 118 118 advert?

I'm heading to bed too. I've a Trampoline and a Fishtank to buy in the morning.

This is getting more weird by the minute.

  • startledbunny06/02/2010 at 01:04

I thought so. The way I dance. I may never be back

I must delete that video of me dancing when a little drunk off Apple TV.

Yep! Vigo in the North West. My sister has moved there for a couple of years and it's my birthday next month. Good excuse for a holiday and a drink.

Rediscovering the joys of EasyJet's pricing structure.. :) It has been a while (I flew a lot in 2005 but haven't been on a plane since).

50 quid for the flight (very good). +18 to add a suitcase.

Yeah. I rarely need one though. You can carry on a lot....

I say this now but when I went to Dubai I filled my sizeable suitcase so full that I couldn't repack it to come home and had to leave a fair amount behind :P

quick check, I don't think any big airline flies to Porto. I'm going there and getting the bus up.

yes. yesterday we were looking for flights for a friend who's going to Europe next week. he would be able to jump do Milan, Berlin, London and Rome (and some stops in the middle), for less than 50USD per flight. It's amazing :-)

It is quite ridiculous, especially something like Ryanair which offers flights for £5. But you get what you pay for and that's like cattle.

From Berlin? I don't think it matters. There should be flights to Heathrow and Gatwick, and probably Luton or Stanstead too. Heathrow may cost more though.

yes, that's the problem. he can arrive to Luton, Gatwick or Stanted, but all around 10:30PM. so we were trying to figure out which of the airports would allow him to arrive safe and fast to a hotel in London before the tube shuts down

Still very late once you've taken security into account though. It's gonna be late wherever you look. Are you sure a hotel at the airport isn't better for one night?

I've already arranged to play golf with Dad on Sunday (weather permitting). I may miss the launch because I'm incapable of doing Sunday mornings unless F1 is involved. Will iPlayer the rugby. Doubt I'll stay up beyond half time for the Superbowl.

I am not keen on Sunday mornings either. I can just about cope with the launch time but I like to watch at least a couple of hours of the build up which means getting up at 7am and not getting to bed till at least 3am the following morning.

Ok. Off to Avatar at some undefined point on Saturday, after it was sold out last week. We've had so many deferrals I'm wondering whether to bother at all, and I'm not sure what time we've prebooked..

My work won't like it if I stay up until 3am, they are starting to notice my 9.02am arrivals caused by staying up late enough, as it is.. Next week I have to find a way to get myself to bed a little earlier on weekdays so that I can get up earlier.

Since I've been up nearly as long as that already, I'm off to bed..

Mr C... In all the excitement of my sporting injury yesterday I didn't spot your reply on the video encoding thing.

I agree with you about linux and open office. Don't like 'em, don't use 'em. But the most popular bits of free software are HTML, Javascript, MySQL, PHP, Python, Perl, The e-mail specification... etc... etc... Somebody spent time writing those and you get to use them for free. And that's what seems to be needed to create successful network effect type interaction. The fact you can make a website for free is pretty much the main reason it works. 1p per web page licence for the HTML standard?

So yes, my point, I guess was that I see H.264 as more like HTML than my OS. And I do have good free examples of stuff like that.

I see that you don't have to go through every page of a league this year. There is a dorp down box at the bottom of the page where you can pick a page.

I believe Kathi sent that through as a suggestion last year.

there seems to only be a pre register page, so i don't think so, but make a league, and they will come

It's not officially open, but I've unbolted the door as quite a lot of the drivers have been announced.

right - I'm off to watch Avatar in 3D. The number of people that said it's just not the same in 2D (which I saw last month) had better be right, otherwise this is 3 hours of my life I won't ever get back.

I am yet to see any 3D movies since this 'new wave' of 3D started. I meant to see Up but never quite got around to it. I think I'll go to the Toy Story 3D double feature though because I feel like a criminal for never seeing either of them (even though I have them both on DVD), and I need to before the third one comes out

It's Italy. I feel sorry for Italy because they're consistently the worst of the 6. If they won a couple though then Scotland would probably get the wooden spoon though and I wouldn't approve of that either! So torn!

It depends on the Bundesland but women parking spaces have to be ...

... easily accessible (I'm hoping that's so we can get away quickly rather than because of alleged parking skills)

    .. better lit

    .. have video surveillance

and a panic button close by.

They are usually used in big parking houses or other possibly dangerous parking lots

Amazon / Play.com. Failing that, if they're PC based, Steam's good for that kind of thing.

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 22:50

Are we sticking around for the Bud Shootout?

    what's that?

It features a selection of Cup drivers who did well last year, and past champions. It is even more 'made for TV' than a normal NASCAR race, in that they race for 25 laps then there's a mandatory break for car adjustments before the run to the finish. There's a smaller field and a huge cheque for the winner.

That's the thing about cars that produce very little downforce. Intead of losing time following another car you gain time.

  • RG06/02/2010 at 23:22

now we know why staying in the draft is so important.. you just fall back

Staying in the draft will be a windy option though?

    (Poor, I know)

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:23

    Piquet again?

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:23

    Piquet again?

    oh ffs.

  • RG06/02/2010 at 23:23

Right, I'm off. Internet is being annoying and the racing isn't interesting. And I have an early start, so night all and lotsa love.

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:23

she did well to save that.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:23

Staying in the draft will be a windy option though?

    :(

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:23

    Piquet again?

And he took out the star of the show!

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:24

Right, I'm off. Internet is being annoying and the racing isn't interesting. And I have an early start, so night all and lotsa love.

    Night

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:24

she did well to save that.

It was a very good save

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:24

    Hi everyone...

    Piquet spins Danica...

Does this guy want the entire world to hate him?

  • Paul Convery06/02/2010 at 23:24

    Piquet again?

Trying to take Danica. Bet he doesn't like all the attention she is getting compared to him.

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:24

Does this guy want the entire world to hate him?

    i think so!

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:25

Trying to take Danica. Bet he doesn't like all the attention she is getting compared to him.

You can bet after the race she will threaten to thump him

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:26

That inside shot of her correcting it... very good save

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:26

Does this guy want the entire world to hate him?

    i think so!

Maybe Nelson needs to wear this American football jersey...

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:27

That inside shot of her correcting it... very good save

    am impressive by the woman.

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:28

That inside shot of her correcting it... very good save

She is doing a lot better than I thought she would. The jump from open wheel to NASCAR is a pretty big jump. Even with the oval experience, it is a tough change that takes a lot to get used to.

  • Christine06/02/2010 at 23:29

    am impressive by the woman.

    *impressed.

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:29

    that shouldn't happen?

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:29

    *impressed.

    oops.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:30

Nice tyre pattern in the grass

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:30

    that shouldn't happen?

    That should not happen

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:31

I'm still amazed that people still walk away from stuff like that.

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:31

    That should not happen

The Cup cars have been redesigned to prevent this sort of thing, but ARCA races with the old version.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:31

    that shouldn't happen?

    That should not happen

It should just slide unless the wheels dig into the grass or hit a kerb or something. I really don't understand how that can roll like that

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:33

It should just slide unless the wheels dig into the grass or hit a kerb or something. I really don't understand how that can roll like that

I didn't see the drag flaps go up. I think it hit the difference asphalt on the infield causing it to high center and roll.

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:33

    NASCAR driver @KyleBusch on Twitter:

Is this the arca 200 or danica 200. No offence, but geez. There r other drivers and sponsors that need coverage as well.

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:34

OK, I am watching SpeedTV in HD right.

How can an ARCA race be in HD and f1 still is in the broadcasting stone age.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:34

I didn't see the drag flaps go up.

It rolled before it turned far enough for them to activate

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:35

OK, I am watching SpeedTV in HD right.

How can an ARCA race be in HD and f1 still is in the broadcasting stone age.

They are now showing some football and rugby games here in 3D now

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:35

They are now showing some football and rugby games here in 3D now

    Too many nows

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:35

How can an ARCA race be in HD and f1 still is in the broadcasting stone age.

    That's insane

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:35

    NASCAR driver @KyleBusch on Twitter:

Is this the arca 200 or danica 200. No offence, but geez. There r other drivers and sponsors that need coverage as well.

@KyleBusch Don't beat up on the girl just because nobody likes you.

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:38

Why do I like Dancia in NASCAR but not in IndyCar?

I think it's because it fits her racing style, public persona, and attitude better.

  • Paul Convery06/02/2010 at 23:42

    Nelson involved in something again...

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:42

    Nelson involved in something again...

This entire race is a little bit Piquet.

  • Paul Convery06/02/2010 at 23:43

This entire race is a little bit Piquet.

Maybe he has been training them all how to crash?

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:45

Maybe he has been training them all how to crash?

Are you kidding it's NASCAR. Crashing is in their DNA.

  • Paul Convery06/02/2010 at 23:46

Are you kidding it's NASCAR. Crashing is in their DNA.

Thats true, but maybe he has been training him how to crash on purpose...

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:47

Danica is slicing and dicing up.

I cold be cynical of NASCAR and say that they gave her a few more horses for the headlines and to finally kill the IRL.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:49

One of the things I love about NASCAR is that you can see the ars move on their suspension.

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:51

Poor Ali, that was a great run.

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:51

Poor Ali, that was a great run.

    :(

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:52

Poor Ali, that was a great run.

And she will get a lot less coverage than Danica despite doing a better job for most of the race

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:52

Poor Ali, that was a great run.

    agreed

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:53

And she will get a lot less coverage than Danica despite doing a better job for most of the race

even the race winner will get less than danica.

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:53

Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the IRL

  • me06/02/2010 at 23:54

Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the IRL

    ouch.

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:54

Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the IRL

It isn't that bad... if she wins the Indy 500 then she's gone from IRL

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:54

even the race winner will get less than danica.

Sure but Danica gets coverage because she is a woman so you would think a woman who was in genuine contention until she got mugged would get more coverage.

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:55

Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the IRL

Surely Tony George getting punted by the family did that

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:55

Sure but Danica gets coverage because she is a woman so you would think a woman who was in genuine contention until she got mugged would get more coverage.

    Danica is already famous.

  • Pat W06/02/2010 at 23:56

Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the IRL

Surely Tony George getting punted by the family did that

They've hired an expert in promotion and marketing so we'll see

  • Kathi06/02/2010 at 23:56

Sure but Danica gets coverage because she is a woman so you would think a woman who was in genuine contention until she got mugged would get more coverage.

Did she pose in sportswear too?

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:56

Ladies and gentlemen, we just witnessed the possible beginning of the end of the IRL

    ouch.

If they loose Danica, it is game up for the IRL. She the only one drawing a crowd and brings in any semblance of proper sponsorship. If she finds a foodhold in NASCAR, and abandons the IRL. The Hulme / George family will cut off the aid to the racing series I would like to call "Tony's folly."

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:57

They've hired an expert in promotion and marketing so we'll see

They need to find a load of money because the George family have spent something like $600 million on the IRL

  • Steven Roy06/02/2010 at 23:57

Did she pose in sportswear too?

She posed in a bikini in sports illustrated

  • Paul Convery06/02/2010 at 23:57

    night paul.

  • Dan Brunell06/02/2010 at 23:59

They've hired an expert in promotion and marketing so we'll see

Promoters, PR, and marketers don't pay the bills.

No Danica = No sponsors = No IRL.

Just tell Nick to ignore the day. Of course the problem is any man hearing that is going to take it as - you better remember it or else

  • Journeyer07/02/2010 at 00:10

USF1 just congratulated Danica via Twitter.

They definitely won't get her now. 7th on her ARCA debut? That's very good going. She'll be in Nationwide by next season and Cup by 2012.

And Piquet... 27th?! Ha! I wonder what he has to say...

  • Steven Roy07/02/2010 at 00:10

How many were running at the end?

  • Pat W07/02/2010 at 00:12

right - I'm off to watch Avatar in 3D. The number of people that said it's just not the same in 2D (which I saw last month) had better be right, otherwise this is 3 hours of my life I won't ever get back.

I'm off to see it in a few hours.

Quick review: I thought it would be a techincal demo with great effects and a rubbish story. It turned out to be a really enjoyable story and while the 3D was sort of cool, I don't know that I can see it taking off.

  • Steven Roy07/02/2010 at 00:12

Interesting feature on Alli Owens website http://alliowens.com/ Fan of the month. Nice to see a driver give a fan that kind of recognition

  • Alison07/02/2010 at 00:13

Just show him this conversation to convince him. ;)

Hehe I could. He didn't send me a lot of unwanted junk at christmas. Maybe I'll just leave him be. I really hate Valentines day junk though!

The 2-billion dollar gross revenue might be saying otherwise...

  • Steven Roy07/02/2010 at 00:13

How many were running at the end?

Don't know. He ran in the top 6 or so for a while then had a little bup with Danica then another with someone else and he dropped back as a result

  • Journeyer07/02/2010 at 00:13

Hehe I could. He didn't send me a lot of unwanted junk at christmas. Maybe I'll just leave him be. I really hate Valentines day junk though!

Awww. He can always claim it's Chinese New Year junk - it's on the same day. :D

  • Alison07/02/2010 at 00:14

The 2-billion dollar gross revenue might be saying otherwise...

Well if you're gonna see anything in 3D it'd be that. The important thing will be how many people stick with it in the future.

  • Pat W07/02/2010 at 00:14

The 2-billion dollar gross revenue might be saying otherwise...

I disagree. everyone wants to see what the fuss is about. this is a fad and it'll be gone in two years.

  • Pat W07/02/2010 at 00:14

I got bored the other night at work and decided to do a little tribute to my latest favorite driver.

    http://drop.io...st/asset/pict0005-jpg

    hahahah!

  • Journeyer07/02/2010 at 00:14

Don't know. He ran in the top 6 or so for a while then had a little bup with Danica then another with someone else and he dropped back as a result

Well, at least it sounds like there could be potential in him.

But he bumped Danica?! He really likes being the villain, doesn't he?

  • Alison07/02/2010 at 00:17

Awww. He can always claim it's Chinese New Year junk - it's on the same day. :D

    Hmmmm I'm not convinced :P

  • Pat W07/02/2010 at 00:21

It is rather clever. Although after about an hour I forgot it was 3D - and only occasionally thought "oh - that was clever".

    I concur.

  • Alison07/02/2010 at 00:22

    I concur.

Yah although I think it does add some more depth generally even if you don't notice it. If the 3D is done well, I don't mind it but in general I'd rather see something normally. Especially considering the price premium.

  • Journeyer07/02/2010 at 00:23

I disagree. everyone wants to see what the fuss is about. this is a fad and it'll be gone in two years.

but if it were a fad, it wouldn't have made that much, because the people who first watched it wouldn't have raved about it and convinced other people to watch... there may be repeat viewings too.

ultimately, it'll probably stay. many cinemas (over here anyway) are already equipping themselves with 3D capability, so they seem to be convinced.

  • Alison07/02/2010 at 00:24

ultimately, it'll probably stay. many cinemas (over here anyway) are already equipping themselves with 3D capability, so they seem to be convinced.

Meh they'll keep trying to show the films. I do think it'll run its course in a few years though. Cinema is a dying industry in the longer term in my opinion....

  • Journeyer07/02/2010 at 00:24

My thought on this is: the cinemas are looking for something they can offer that a home DVD/Blu-Ray theater can't, because they're losing people who'd rather stay at home and watch a Blu-Ray instead. and 3D may be it.

  • Journeyer07/02/2010 at 00:26

Meh they'll keep trying to show the films. I do think it'll run its course in a few years though. Cinema is a dying industry in the longer term in my opinion....

Something will have to replace it, though. There's too much at stake for too many people for them to let it die.

  • Alison07/02/2010 at 00:26

Yeah that definitely is it. I'm not sure the 3D (especially at that price) is gonna do it for them. The cinema is so expensive. Plus people around you are disruptive and the times don't suit. I wouldn't pay that kind of money....
