It is Jacques Villeneuve Sr's birthday today - brother to Gilles and uncle of the baggy-overalled Jacques we know and love. Eh-hem. He was also a race driver too, and took part in a couple of years worth of F1. What a family! Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The Race of Champions Nations Cup happened and whilst we live commented it, we also did not enjoy it. Read more about Mr C's disappointment, and why he probably won't be watching today. We'll set up a thread anyway, because it would be wrong to cover half an event.
  • Meanwhile, I spent the evening putting together the last F1 Digest race review, and it's quite a short one. On the same subject, Rich wrote a blog entry about his thoughts on the race from the build up to the aftermath - an interesting read.
  • Also, a few days late, but I only just remembered, the Sofa F1 pole poll was decided, and Mr C came second. He was doing so well! I am firmly mid-pack, with Pat just two points above me. Well done to everyone who took part, and even more next year please.

That's all for now. As mentioned above, there'll be some more live commenting in the form of the Race of Champions individual event, although it is on in work hours. Boo. Nevertheless, I'll see you in the comments.

There are people who believe Uncle Jacques was more talented than Gilles which boggles the mind. Shame he was never given a break.

This is a feeling I know. You're obviously a lot more sensible than I am though.

He was never given a decent car like so many drivers. He entered only 3 races and did not qualify for any of them.

Hahahaha why do you love him so much?

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 00:57

Hahahaha why do you love him so much?

the guy has tons of potential. it would be a shame to see it all go to waste just because his sponsor pulled out.

this early, i'm proposing heidfeld-kobayashi for sauber.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 00:57

Hahahaha why do you love him so much?

    he has Lewis Hamilton-esq potential

Just watched Ep of James Mays Toy program, it was the plasticine flower one.....

Next weeks Mechano thingy looks mega.

    Talking of mega...

    Episode 4 of the Feeder Series is up if you haven't already listened to it;

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 00:58

yup. but SOMEONE, someone has to get Kobayashi. For the love of God someone get him.

I am far from convinced he is anything special.

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 00:58

    He's definitely a little bit crazy..... :D

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 00:59

    he has Lewis Hamilton-esq potential

that would be stretching it a bit, but he's easily the most fiesty racer I've seen in a while. even more so than Sato.

Kobayashi could also end up at Lotus.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 00:59

    he has Lewis Hamilton-esq potential

No way. There is no basis for that kind of comparison

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 00:59

I am far from convinced he is anything special.

We won't know if someone doesn't get him. And he beat Trulli in his 2nd GP. It looks like Trulli will get a seat; it would be a darn shame if Kobayashi didn't.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 01:00

No way. There is no basis for that kind of comparison

i dont mean it in a "he's going to blow the world away"

but no rookie has come into F1 and had that kind of racing in their first races, since hamilton

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 01:00

We won't know if someone doesn't get him.

That is always the case. A lot of drivers with far better records than his have never raced an F1 car.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 01:01

That is always the case. A lot of drivers with far better records than his have never raced an F1 car.

Feeder records show very little, Piquet proves this.

just because it's happened before doesn't mean we shouldn't let it happen again. i'd rather see kobayashi than pedro de la rosa, for example.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 01:03

Feeder records show very little, Piquet proves this.

    And Grosjean too, actually.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 01:04

    Very true

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 01:07

Feeder records show very little, Piquet proves this.

There is not a straight correlation between junior records and F1 records but generally the more successful in one are successful in the other. There are some drivers like Jan Magnussen who don't deliver in F1 and there are others like Mansell who are much better in F1 than their record suggested they would be.

In two seasons of GP2 Kobayashi had two podium finishes including one win. That does not suggest an outstanding driver.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 01:08

    It dosent have too.

I'm not saying he's the next Schumacher in terms of results, but he's one to watch out for. For sure.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 01:09

I'm not saying he's the next Schumacher in terms of results, but he's one to watch out for. For sure.

A lot of drivers look much better in their first couple of races than they turn out to be. I have seen nothing to suggest Kobayashi is anything special.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 01:10

In two seasons of GP2 Kobayashi had two podium finishes including one win. That does not suggest an outstanding driver.

In two races of F1 I've seen Kobayashi overtake more people than I ever saw Trulli pass this season - defending from this year's WC at Interlagos and passing him at Abu Dhabi, finishing in the top 9 and beating Trulli in both races. That suggests to me he has potential and he can become better.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 01:11

Exactly. We're not saying he's amazing, but that he's got the potential to be a good F1 driver.

Exactly. We're not saying he's amazing, but that he's got the potential to be a good F1 driver.

The original comments from both of you suggested it would be some kind of tragedy if he didn't get a drive because he was something special. I would agree that he has the potential to be a decent F1 driver but so do many many others.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 01:17

We're not disagreeing. We just think he should be given a chance because in his first 2 races he's shown that he might have something, we may be wrong but it would be a shame to not find out.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 01:17

And in the crappy rubbish (i could go on with F1 as i feel it is) world of F1..isnt that what we want?

I want more drivers who can challenge at the front of the field spectacular or not. The GP2 field over the past two seasons has generally been regarded as pretty poor. Kobayashi has finished 16th in the championship two years in a row which suggests not only is he nothing special but that he didn't learn a lot in his first season which he could use to move forward in his second.

I don't think finishing 16th two years in a row suggests he can be a good F1 driver.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 01:33

I don't think finishing 16th two years in a row suggests he can be a good F1 driver.

I'm not looking at his GP2 stats - I'm looking at his F1 stats - and they're been darn good so far, considering the car he's in and his level of experience (as well as the lack of testing this season, and how those in a similar position to him of entering a car midseason have fared).

That and the fact that he was in an average GP2 team for 2 years

There will be some sort of review soonish. Then a break then maybe one once they start testing and again just before first race.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:30

So with all that, here's my guess at 2010 driver lineups:

    Brawn-Mercedes: 1 - Button; 2 - Rosberg

    RBR-Renault: 3 - Vettel; 4 - Webber

    McLaren-Mercedes: 5 - Hamilton; 6 - Raikkonen

    Ferrari: 7 - Massa; 8 - Alonso

    Williams-Cosworth: 9 - Barrichello; 10 - Hulkenberg

    Renault: 11 - Glock; 12 - Kubica

    FIF1-Mercedes: 14 - Sutil; 15 - Liuzzi

    STR-Ferrari: 16 - Buemi; 17 - Alguersuari

    Campos-Cosworth: 18 - Senna; 19 - de la Rosa

    Virgin-Cosworth: 20 - Kovalainen; 21 - Davidson

    USF1-Cosworth: 22 - Villeneuve; 23 - Summerton

    Lotus-Cosworth: 24 - Trulli; 25 - Chandhok

    Sauber-Ferrari: 26 - Heidfeld; 27 - Kobayashi

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 02:31

Yeah i do agree, not sure how though ;)

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:33

3 Merc teams, 3 Ferrari teams, 2 Renault teams, and 5 (!) Cosworth teams. Lotsa Cossie power there.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:34

I reckon thats pretty much it except i disagree with summerton, davidson and maybe chandhok, not sure.

You agree with Kobayashi to Sauber? Cool. :D Summerton and Davidson, I'm not sure either. Chandhok I'm a bit more certain of since it came from Alex Yoong on his Star Sports predictions. Alex Yoong is involved with the 1Malaysia project, which includes Lotus.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:36

Just a thought - if Toyota do leave F1, they will leave on a wasteful note - having signed the Concorde Agreement, they'll have to pay penalties for leaving early.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:36

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:41

no idea - it shouldn't be cheap, but relative to how much Toyota have spent on this project, it probably will be.

that said, Toyota should sell their chassis IP to one of the new teams - someone might put it to good use. their base chassis tends to be good, it's the subsequent development that turns out to be an issue.

I think the manufacturer is tied down and not the team. i.e when Honda pulled out, they lost their entry into 2009, but the Fia 'were nice' and let Brawn have it for free.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:43

Could Sauber buy the Toyota entry, and Concorde signature? I'm not sure how all that works.

As they're the 14th team as mandated by the FIA, they don't need to buy it - it'll be given to them for free.

That's how I see it anyway.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 02:44

Only after all the other teams agreed. But I think this is a different case.

So bye-bye FOTA vice-chairman Howett. Is LDM's term ending soon? I can see a Martin and Mario combo taking over.

They are allowed to sell their stake as a going concern, aren't they? With all the obligations of the Concord included. Can't they avoid it by buying the entire entity and changing the name - rather than buying the vaccant slot on the grid?

Depends on what needs to happen for Sauber now. From what I understand though, they get in for free.

Joe also said that based on his understanding, the team will not be sold, just shut down. As the F1 facility is part of a bigger Toyota compound, it'll be hard to sell off.

  • Dave in NZL04/11/2009 at 02:55

Yeah, I agree re: Sauber. As far as the Toyota compound goes - Toyota wouldn't have to offer up the physical assests for sale, just the right to go racing, would they? Toyota could keep at its assest in place for a (Joe's opinion) push into another series.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 02:55

    TTE?

Toyota Team Europe. The ran the WRC team, then the Le Mans team, then migrated into the F1 team

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 02:56

Toyota in Le Mans again would be amazing

  • Dave in NZL04/11/2009 at 02:57

That's lucky - google told me it was Transthoracic Echocardiography. Ha.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 02:58

Toyota Team Europe. The ran the WRC team, then the Le Mans team, then migrated into the F1 team

Ohhh. Back to Le Mans, I hope. 4 is better than 3. :D

Hope so. I loved that GT1 car they made

I was thinking they try their hand at LMP1. But that works too. :)

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:01

I was thinking they try their hand at LMP1. But that works too. :)

They'd have to do LMP1, it dosent make sense for such a huge manurfacturer to do anything else

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:02

They'd have to do LMP1, it dosent make sense for such a huge manurfacturer to do anything else

Ferrari and Porsche are in Le Mans, but they went for the GTs rather than returning to the prototypes.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:04

Ferrari and Porsche are in Le Mans, but they went for the GTs rather than returning to the prototypes.

Yeah, i meant that you couldnt leave F1 then come into do Le Mans in GT's. If you do it as part of a wider marketing strategy i.e BMW, then thats fine, but the Toyota people to me look like big vision kinda people, they'll want to be at the pinacle.

And for me. Thats it. It's 3am. I have no idea what i'm still doing up.

    Adios Amigos

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:06

Can you visit http://www.feederseries.tk/ and tell me what you see?

oh and do a couple of hard refreshes too

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:06

Guy on Twitter saying Fuji TV now announcing Toyota F1 pullout. No wonder they decided to move up the presscon to today. I wonder who leaked it first though. Mind you, it's not the most surprising news ever.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:07

I think dot.tk are having some redirection issues, temp i hope!

    Yep - I get a blank page

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:07

    Yep - I get a blank page

I got the old podbean page.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:07

Oops, no i dont. It's working fine

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:08

I got the old podbean page.

    booo!!!

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:08

It says it will be sorted within 10 minutes of changing the redirection. But clearly not

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:09

It says it will be sorted within 10 minutes of changing the redirection. But clearly not

Sleep it off - it should be fine in the morning.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:10

It says it will be sorted within 10 minutes of changing the redirection. But clearly not

OK, that's weird. No I get a different page. Which one shoudl I see?

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:10

Sleep it off - it should be fine in the morning.

It wouldnt bother me, but i've just emailed the head of Media at Formula Two with it, and he'll get it before i wake up!

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:10

OK, that's weird. No I get a different page. Which one shoudl I see?

NOT the one that says podbean in the upper-left corner.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:10

OK, that's weird. No I get a different page. Which one shoudl I see?

you should see the one thats mostly white with a blue square

    http://thefeederseries.wordpress.com

    basically that

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:11

It wouldnt bother me, but i've just emailed the head of Media at Formula Two with it, and he'll get it before i wake up!

Ooooh. Hmmm. Stay another 10 minutes?

    Yeah think i may ;)

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:12

    even with a hard refresh?

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:12

    even with a hard refresh?

mine goes back and forth between them both when i refresh it.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 03:12

Anyhoo, I'm off to get some sleep before work. Later, all. :)

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:12

    even with a hard refresh?

Sheesh. It's really weird. Seems to be bouncing around. I'm note sure our proxy is cleaning out properly. I think it might be OK in a while

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:13

Anyhoo, I'm off to get some sleep before work. Later, all. :)

Can you go tot he podbean site, and put a HTML redirect in the top of the page?

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:16

Can you go tot he podbean site, and put a HTML redirect in the top of the page?

I can do, but the problem woudl be that i want to keep the URL as .tk not .wordpress.com, and so i would be redirecting the .tk address to .tk, so it would keep doing it until it reached the proper site. Which may work actually.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:19

Depends on DNS. You might be seeing DNS propagation issues, which should clear up with time.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:19

Can you visit http://www.feederseries.tk/ and tell me what you see?

    Looks good apart from

    as the title

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:22

Can you visit http://www.feederseries.tk/ and tell me what you see?

    That didn't quite work.

I see the bit in quotes as the site title but everything else looks good.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:23

Clearly there is some kind of code appearing as the title and every time I quote it, it disappears in the quoting.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:24

Cripes the DNS is interesting. www.feederseries.tk points to 5 different locations.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:25

Clearly there is some kind of code appearing as the title and every time I quote it, it disappears in the quoting.

Are you looking at hte podbean site?

The one its meant to be redirecting to is..

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:26

Does it say what they are?

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:26

    No, just IP addresses.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:26

    No, just IP addresses.

    ah ok. It's very odd.

I've just got to hope and pray!

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:27

It looks like your normal .tk site.

Might be worth putting in the redirect on podbean just to make sure the correct site is seen?

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:28

Might be worth putting in the redirect on podbean just to make sure the correct site is seen?

I would, but attempting to put a redirection into it has rightly screwed it up, so now i cant even get onto hte admin bit as it redirects me to a 404!!

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:29

    <99meta99 http99-99equiv99=99”REFR99ESH” 99content99=”099;ur99

ok, so just sorted that with copious amounts of using the esc key

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:30

Take all the 99s out and that is what I see as the title

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:30

    <99meta99 http99-99equiv99=99”REFR99ESH” 99content99=”099;ur99

yeah, i knew about that. ta.

the wordpress is hte one im trying to redirect to

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:30

    Does it look like this?

    http://thefeederseries.wordpress.com/

No. It looks exactly like the .tk site did

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:30

Take all the 99s out and that is what I see as the title

    Should be fixed now?

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:33

When I use ctrl F5 on the .tk site it switches between the wordpress and .tk layouts. It now says The Feeder Series as the .tk title rather than all that code.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:34

When I use ctrl F5 on the .tk site it switches between the wordpress and .tk layouts. It now says The Feeder Series as the .tk title rather than all that code.

Yeah, thats the problem. I changed the .tk redirection about 40 minutes ago, but .tk says that it will only take 10 minutes. Hence my worry

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:34

Just tried ctrl F5 about ten times and it alternates between the two layouts which is very odd

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:35

Just tried ctrl F5 about ten times and it alternates between the two layouts which is very odd

    Totally odd

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:35

Just tried ctrl F5 about ten times and it alternates between the two layouts which is very odd

Looks like a DNS round robin. It may be just a propagation issue

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 03:36

    Totally odd

Sounds like we need Mr C or some other coding genius

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 03:41

Ok, so now if you go to the site and end up on the podbean site, you click on the redirection link and it takes you to the new site? Also, which is quite cool, is that when it redirects you it keeps the same URL, which is useful!

Anyway, thats me done for hte night. Night again

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 03:41

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 06:18

this may be the best of all if the most boring F1 team ever finally decides to quit :-)

Question if they quit... What about Kobiashi? He seems to have done enough to earn a seat even without Toyota. Who would go for him?

  • F1Wolf04/11/2009 at 06:21

Question if they quit... What about Kobiashi? He seems to have done enough to earn a seat even without Toyota. Who would go for him?

His dad in sushi restaurant ? Just kidding ...I would feel for the guy. Monday they make big fuss about him being more less sure to get the race seat next year, only to tell everybody on Wednesday there are no seats ... But if Toyota quite there would be vacancy at Sauber ...

  • Mattw04/11/2009 at 06:22

Yeah, I agree re: Sauber. As far as the Toyota compound goes – Toyota wouldn’t have to offer up the physical assests for sale, just the right to go racing, would they? Toyota could keep at its assest in place for a (Joe’s opinion) push into another series.

If Toyota had ANY sense, they should have sent Team Toyota Europe back to Le Mans, and signed Williams up as their works team (in F1) on an engine supply basis a couple of years ago.

With Toyota money and Williams racing know how, it really could have worked.

Hope so. I loved that GT1 car they made

It may have been a 'GT1' car, but in 99 GT1 was very different to now. The toyota was in all but name an out and out prototype. The equilivent class today would be LMP1

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 06:36

Mattw, I think I see the flaw in your plan:

    If Toyota had ANY sense

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 06:41

But if Toyota quite there would be vacancy at Sauber ...

I think he might turn up at one of the teams.

  • F1Wolf04/11/2009 at 06:50

I think he might turn up at one of the teams.

but probably not in any of the new cash strapped ones. as KK said, he does not even have budget to go back to GP2 ...

In an hour's time. They said it'll be afternoon our time, Wolf, so that should be accurate.

Toyota doesn't do second fiddle. It's their way or the highway. Just ask Mike Gascoyne.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 06:54

but probably not in any of the new cash strapped ones. as KK said, he does not even have budget to go back to GP2 ...

I still say Qadbak. Toro Rosso can go for him too.

In an hour's time. They said it'll be afternoon our time, Wolf, so that should be accurate.

looks relieable, now backed by this tweet from adamcooperf1:

Well the Toyota bad news will be with us in a little over an hour...

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 06:55

is that to decide if they race next year?

yup - but almost everyone's saying they've decided not to.

  • F1Wolf04/11/2009 at 06:56

by why people say it is bad news ? what is bad about Toyota leaving ?

I recall an article in F1Racing a while back, while Eddie J had his column there, when he was telling FW to get on a plane to Japan and sell Williams to Toyota ...

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 06:58

i'm not too fussed about it - Sauber's ready to replace them. my only concern now is where Kobayashi will end up.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 06:58

I recall an article in F1Racing a while back, while Eddie J had his column there, when he was telling FW to get on a plane to Japan and sell Williams to Toyota ...

same was said of Williams selling to BMW. Look what happened to BMW and Toyota.

looking forward to Sauber returning. Just a question. Will Peter Sauber be in the team or is it just Qadbaq using the name?

  • F1Wolf04/11/2009 at 07:04

if Toyota goes, there will be quite a lot of people with some decent know how available to other teams. the newcomers can go shopping ...

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 07:05

looking forward to Sauber returning. Just a question. Will Peter Sauber be in the team or is it just Qadbaq using the name?

Sauber will be involved in some shape or form, but I'm assuming Dr. Mario stays on as team principal.

  • F1Wolf04/11/2009 at 07:06

Quadbak F1 that would sound horrible :-) I quess the Sauber name would stay as would Peter Sauber and Dr Mario and Quick Nick

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 07:06

Pascal Vasselon intrigues me. Will he stay as a team engineer, or go back to his first line of work - tyres? Whoever the FIA get as the tyre supplier, they'll need someone with great expertise to speed up progress.

  • startledbunny04/11/2009 at 07:06

    quack quack :-)

I believe that Quadback means something along the lines Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain UAE or so ... So on the second thought that would go well with new trend Force India, USF1 ... noooooo ....

  • Lewis/LB2204/11/2009 at 07:09

Might as well me Quackbuck F1. :D

QuackBaq doesn't particularly roll of the Tongue, not like Ferr-ari and To-ro Ro-sso. Qadbaq just seems to get stuck in your mouth before you say it.

Toyota are apparently calling a press conference saying they will leave F1. I must admit, I'm kinda glad because they were just another waste of time big manufacturer.

I have decided that teams should be mostly privateer and car manufacturers should be mostly engine suppliers!

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 07:27

I have decided that teams should be mostly privateer and car manufacturers should be mostly engine suppliers!

if you look at indycar, the teams are independant (Andretti Green, Chip Ganassi) and the suppliers are manafacturers (Dallara, Firestone)

I am sure it is right for the others, but I don't think anyone subscribing to my feed would be very excited about my F1 tweets!

Anyone else feel like we're on Toyota F1 deathwatch?

    Morning, Stuart.

More like Kobayashi seatwatch, actually. Will he be in F1 next year, you think?

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)04/11/2009 at 07:55

    Morning all.

Anyone else feel like we're on Toyota F1 deathwatch?

Don't you think we should have a Finnish F1 team?

  • Stuart C04/11/2009 at 07:59

Will he be in F1 next year, you think?

There's a very unseemly scrabble for seats at the moment and I'm not sure he has the track record to warrant a paid position on merit, or whether he has the money to pay for a seat.

Don’t you think we should have a Finnish F1 team?

The interesting thing about Toyota is that they have this huge facility, with two wind tunnels, which they will have to mothball. It cannot easily be repurposed.

  • Stuart C04/11/2009 at 08:07

That’s out in Japan is it? Or is that in Cologne? How far is that from Hinwell?

It's in Cologne. There is a research facility in Japan, and part of the problem for the team has been the need to be seen to involve the people there, even though they know very little about F1. Toyota only started winning in CART/IRL when the US arm took engine development in-house.

Cologne is quite far west, not far from the border with Belgium.

There are 6 new seats next year. And so far we have 2 new drivers announced (Senna and the Hulk). So I guess we have 4 spaces?

We are down to 4 engines, if max haddnent forced cosworth into the sport there would be 3. I guess he did a good job there (grudgingly)

2 Ip's to buy if anyone is interested, i still think the Beemer would be the better powerplant

  • Amy04/11/2009 at 08:36

Sorry, I just can't feel sorry when these big manufacturers pull out.

They all made the same mistakes and don't deserve to be in the sport. I do hope that Quadbike get an entry now.

The only thing that makes me sad is that for the second year running, hundreds of people go into christmas with no jobs. Now that is truly sad.

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)04/11/2009 at 08:37

If it's anything like Honda they won't let it happen. Why else do you think Quadbike are planning to run a Ferrari when it would have been easier to buy the BMW IP?

it wouldnt, running an engine programme is loads more costly than being a customer...

They also have no reason to... Mclaren on the other hand

McLaren can buy the IPs then build the engines according to those IPs, rather than design their own.

But you just said the IP's are up for sale!

You could run like cosworth as a supplier, and make money that way, or you could use it for branding reasons like Mclaren.

For qadbak it makes little sense to develop an engine

But shouldn't the government also be ready to intervene if the company cannot handle it, for example?

That's not the way it works I am afraid. Rightly or wrongly, sole responsibilty is placed on the operating company.

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)04/11/2009 at 10:14

    Oh no :/

Lets hope not. At least Joe hasn't had any leaks about this one

Actually that's a good point - wouldn't Joe have said something about this, being in France and with his good French Connections?

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)04/11/2009 at 10:16

So, how many teams will we have next year? I am guessing 10.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 10:16

Actually that's a good point - wouldn't Joe have said something about this, being in France and with his good French Connections?

Thats what I am hoping, but these companies don't always leak at board level

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 10:17

So, how many teams will we have next year? I am guessing 10.

    No more than 12

  • Lukeh04/11/2009 at 10:17

    I'll say 11

Hey Jon. Did the blog issues sort out?

    I think so!

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 10:35

    I think so!

    Seems good to me anyway.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 10:36

    Seems good to me anyway.

    Yeah me too, thanks.

I think it was just about being a bit more patient than they told me to be! But looks fine now

  • Christine04/11/2009 at 10:37

I think it was just about being a bit more patient than they told me to be! But looks fine now

    Oooh, it looks all different.

  • Paul04/11/2009 at 10:37

I think it was just about being a bit more patient than they told me to be! But looks fine now

Yeah I looked at a few things. Pretty sure it was DNS propogation, which sometimes takes a while

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 10:38

    Oooh, it looks all different.

    It does :)

I spent a couple of weeks redesigning the site but then realised i could do it so much easier by using a wordpress theme, so have done that and will just customise it to fit my needs!

I like having job interviews. I have my 3rd in a week tomorrow morning. Caister here I come! :D

    I like the new look!

The good thing is, you can make incremental changes to it when you need to (like I did to mine last week).

  • Lukeh04/11/2009 at 10:45

Hehe, I like Google's logo today

    http://www.google.co.uk/

  • Turkey Machine04/11/2009 at 10:46

Whilst job interviews are good news, I'm not so happy with Toyota deciding to up sticks, although I did say it wasn't guaranteed they'd stay in F1. Renault can't decide to leave now, cos that'd mean 12 teams in F1 instead of 13. I want 26 cars dammit!

  • Christine04/11/2009 at 10:48

Hehe, I like Google's logo today

How is it possible they are 20 years old?

  • Lukeh04/11/2009 at 10:49

How is it possible they are 20 years old?

It's insane. The simpsons I can understand, but Wallace and Gromit?

Mind = seriously blown. Definitely doesn't seem 20 years.

  • Turkey Machine04/11/2009 at 10:49

How is it possible they are 20 years old?

    Plasticine doesn't age. ;)

    #MFC

I really liked this article from Matt Mullenweg (founder of Wordpress). He talks about how he blogs and why he blogs:

I used to think constantly about building an audience for my blog. But now my attitude is, If I'm not blogging for myself, it's not worth it. So I don't post once a day, only when it feels natural. Some people complain -- they say, "Write more about WordPress; we don't want to see photos of kids in Vietnam," but I don't really care. I really like posting photos of places I've been.

    http://www.inc.com/magazine/20090601/the-way-i-work-matt-mullenweg_pagen_2.html

He does also, of course, famously have possibly the coolest domain name for his blog:

    http://ma.tt/

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 10:56

#MFC I linked to page two

He also explains he is addicted to the Kindle and likes coding in the middles of the night.

If Toyota's 2010 withdrawal is complete and final, this will be the first season since 1982 that hasn't had a Japanese engine supplier.

have looked into it. it's wordpress' way of trying to stay relevant.

still a massive resource hog though.

  • me04/11/2009 at 11:23

"Write more about WordPress; we don't want to see photos of kids in Vietnam," but I don't really care. I really like posting photos of places I've been.

see. i'm only interested in what he has to say about wordpress.

i care about seeing pictures of where bassano's been. i couldn't care less where matt has been.

  • Christine04/11/2009 at 11:23

Christine has more than 2 :)

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 11:31

i care about seeing pictures of where bassano's been. i couldn't care less where matt has been.

Right... I thought it was interesting conceptually... I guess he's transitioning to a personal blog but forgot to tell everyone.

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:34

Afternoon... i have had a haircut... quite a different process to the UK ;)

My uual barbers is quie a way away from my hotel so i decided to try somewhere new.

I began with the assumption that if i walk down any non major road though downtown and stick to it for enough time I will deffinatly either pass, or see on another street 3 drifferent businesses.

Groceries, Dry cleaners, and barbers shops.

Before i got to the barbers i passed 4 groceries and 2 dry cleaners before reaching the barbers. No Queues, in sit, then a haircut...

Very professionaly done, the guy threw in a wet shave for free, so i might go back there again :D

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 11:34

Flickr is blocked in the UAE... And Skype...

    Crazy.

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 11:35

Very professionaly done, the guy threw in a wet shave for free, so i might go back there again :D

I'm very confused. Why would you ever pay someone else to shave you?

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:36

Flickr is blocked in the UAE... And Skype...

If you listened to the parade lap you would know the latter is not necessarily true :P

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 11:36

If you listened to the parade lap you would know the latter is not necessarily true :P

I couldn't hear you ;) But you have to use a VPN correct?

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 11:36

I'm very confused. Why would you ever pay someone else to shave you?

It's an Asian thing, I guess. Our barbers do that here too.

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:36

I'm very confused. Why would you ever pay someone else to shave you?

Its very nice... saves me having to do, it... and he was way better at using a straight razor than i am!

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:38

I couldn't hear you ;) But you have to use a VPN correct?

The only thing which is blocked is downloading it, if you have the program you can use it.

However it is illegal to use it to call actual phone numbers. calling skype to skype i think is fine

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 11:38

It's an Asian thing, I guess. Our barbers do that here too.

Hmmm makes me wish I was an anthropologist.

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 11:39

Any thoughts on why they block flickr?

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 11:39

It's an Asian thing, I guess. Our barbers do that here too.

Used to be an English thing too... Barbers here will still do it, just not hairdressers.

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:40

I'm very confused. Why would you ever pay someone else to shave you?

I guess its like women paying someone to do their nails...

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)04/11/2009 at 11:40

The only thing which is blocked is downloading it, if you have the program you can use it.

Any thoughts on why they block flickr?

It might be because it's difficult to filter out naughty pics...

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:40

Any thoughts on why they block flickr?

    Nudity/pornography is blocked.

Before they banned flikr thats pretty much anyone used it for here..

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 11:42

I guess its like women paying someone to do their nails...

    I have never done this.

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 11:44

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 11:46

Maybe there doent need to be... I wasnt particularly stubbley, i still got a free shave...

This i cannot answer... In india a shave is about 50p.

It is more effective than traveling with a razor

  • Stuart C04/11/2009 at 11:56

    Increasing your FIA circulation figures?

Not sure if it counts, but who knows? Does no harm and people seem to like it.

Amusingly, just heard from D Heath, who plans to cover similar ground in his blog this week.

When she performed her new single 'live' on the X-Factor a couple of weeks ago she was wearing the most bizarre semi-military garb. It had black spikes on the shoulders.

Mind you, last Saturday she had on a frock that looked like it had been liberated from the Blake's Seven prop cupboard.

    I'm normally the victim.

I very enormous crocodile wants to eat yummy children. Obviously they're scared of him and keep a wide berth. He disguises himself as a variety of things including a seesaw that he tries to get the kids to play on and a palm tree that he encourages children to climb to get coconuts.

He was much more convincing as a tree than those things.

A guy on my course this morning came in all proud and smiley that he was the one 'who found out that Toyota were pulling out first' and i smiled nicely back and asked him when he found out, and he said 9am,so i kept smiling and said i found out at 3am :D

Violent climate pandas not welcome at COP15

    FTA:

At Monday’s meeting, representatives for People’s Climate Action were told that protestors wearing panda costumes during demonstrations would not be violating the ban on protestors wearing masks.

Panda and polar bear suits are commonly considered ‘climate friendly’ symbols in the activist milieu. However, PCA was warned that ‘the first panda who pulls out an iron bar will ruin it for the other peaceful pandas’.

So Mr C, you're allowed to come and visit Copenhagen in your Panda costume and even protest in it - just don't go near any weapons!

    Not Pirelli, then.

I do wonder though - they wanna supply tyres for the road, yet they agree to supply to GP3? Talk about inconsistent.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 15:19

From Mr Noble - the results of his Twitter survey for top 5 F1 drivers of 2009:

    Top five drivers were: 1 Button 1715 points; 2 Vettel 1273; 3 Hamilton 891; 4 Barrichello 543; 5 Webber 466

    Six to ten were: 6 Raikkonen 314; 7 Rosberg 182; 8 Alonso 152; 9 Kobayashi 148; 10 Massa 39

  • RG04/11/2009 at 15:20

    9 Kobayashi 148

I think there's a good chance Kobayashi ends up beside Heidfeld at Qadbak. Watcha think?

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 15:22

    Qadbak? I meant Sauber. :D

  • RG04/11/2009 at 15:24

I think there's a good chance Kobayashi ends up beside Heidfeld at Qadbak. Watcha think?

Hmmmmm, honestly, can't see it happening. I think we need people who have money and since we are going with Ferrari and not having Toyota engines, who were Kobayashi's only sponser, I think we might not go for him.

Though saying that, I don't have a foggiest who will be there.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 15:24

hahahah. Jake vs Snapz man. AMAZING

Aaaargh I've lost my Oyster card :( That's a fiver down the drain....

  • Adie04/11/2009 at 15:38

I've just seen the betting odds for next years F1 WDC.

Button is 10-1, Hamilton Fav @ 9/4, Alonso 7/2 and Kimi and Vettel 11/2.

Rosberg's got to be worth a E/W punt @ 66/1 if he ends up @ Brawn surely?

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 15:41

Rosberg's got to be worth a E/W punt @ 66/1 if he ends up @ Brawn surely?

Oooh, definitely worth a go, I'd say. :)

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 15:47

Again, before I go, can someone rush to the radio/iPlayer to confirm this:

Just heard on @5LiveF1 that Red Bull have shown an interest to sign Button for next year.... mental!

  • Adie04/11/2009 at 15:52

Just heard on @5LiveF1 that Red Bull have shown an interest to sign Button for next year.... mental!

Really? Button and Vettel together would be an awesome pairing. Not sure what Monster would say about that though...

However, they've got contracts with Vettel and Webber for next season. It's be as pricey to get rid of...Webber? I just can't see that one happening?

  • Rich04/11/2009 at 15:53

I think there's a good chance Kobayashi ends up beside Heidfeld at Qadbak. Watcha think?

I doubt it. He only had two races and none really know how good or bad the Toyota was. I think it was a better car just the drivers did not make full use. We will see next year as both Jarno and Timo compete with different team mates.

Assuming Macca do not take up Nick he will be at Qadbak and I rather hope Kovy will join him. I am convinced Jarno will be at Lotus (he said he had a firm offer).

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 15:54

Assuming Macca do not take up Nick he will be at Qadbak and I rather hope Kovy will join him. I am convinced Jarno will be at Lotus (he said he had a firm offer).

Joe is thinking Heikki's off to Manor/Virgin.

  • Rich04/11/2009 at 15:57

Joe is thinking Heikki's off to Manor/Virgin.

Could depend on how far the negotiations are - somewhere I heard that Timo was on their list. I think you could expect to pay Timo rather less.

It is fairly obvious from Williams choice that they were limited by budget - it could be a good pairing though.

  • RG04/11/2009 at 15:57

Assuming Macca do not take up Nick he will be at Qadbak and I rather hope Kovy will join him. I am convinced Jarno will be at Lotus (he said he had a firm offer).

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 15:59

Assuming Timo hasn't signed with Renault yet, which some said he's done already.

  • Rich04/11/2009 at 15:59

Heikki? Hmm, not so sure about that one.

Have you reasons - he seems a nice guy and I think Nick and Kovy would work well together.

  • RG04/11/2009 at 15:59

Could depend on how far the negotiations are - somewhere I heard that Timo was on their list. I think you could expect to pay Timo rather less.

More or less sure Timo is going to Renault. Unless Sauber are putting in an extra late bid in.

No offence to myself, but I'd rather go for Renault.

  • Rich04/11/2009 at 16:04

Assuming Timo hasn't signed with Renault yet, which some said he's done already.

I think that is quite possible and to be honest it is an interesting pairing. I think Robert could comfortable beat Timo if you go by reputation. Our problem is no-one really knows how good or bad the Toyotas were. The cars could possibly have flattered all of their drivers - Kobayashi's performance would suggest this.

  • Stuart C04/11/2009 at 16:04

Ugh. I've been putting it off for far too long, but I've got to sit down and go through my quarterly expenses. Beastly way to end the day.

  • Rich04/11/2009 at 16:08

No offence to myself, but I'd rather go for Renault.

I am not sure I agree - Alonso could not do much with the car. I think the Sauber (hopefully they will keep the name) could be quite good (mid-field), especially if Nick is retained (no question he will there if he does not get a better offer elsewhere).

  • startledbunny04/11/2009 at 16:40

Somebody might have mentioned it already, but if Sauber do make it to F1 (and I really hope they do), I hope they reinstate their original Black Livery.

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 16:40

Just to clear something up from earlier about Miss, Mrs etc.

    Miss = Unmarried female

    Mrs = Married female

Ms = female unwilling to say if married or not

missus or missis is the word I think Jon was after if he was saying my missus. It means misteress of the household and does not really imply marriage anymore.

"Miss's" means... well I don't know I think Jon made that up ;)

  • startledbunny04/11/2009 at 16:41

Somebody might have mentioned it already, but if Sauber do make it to F1 (and I really hope they do), I hope they reinstate their original Black Livery.

I meant to say F1 next year

So what is Mrs. short for if it isn't missus?

  • Christine04/11/2009 at 16:42

Just to clear something up from earlier about Miss, Mrs etc.

Are you meant to use Mrs if you keep your own name?

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 16:43

I could have used some more commas there everyone. Sorry about that.

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 16:43

Are you meant to use Mrs if you keep your own name?

Hah I guess you can do what you like. It's your name!

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 16:43

So what is Mrs. short for if it isn't missus?

Mrs isn't, anymore, short for anything. No . needed.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/11/2009 at 16:43

Just to clear something up from earlier about Miss, Mrs etc.

Are you meant to use Mrs if you keep your own name?

I'm not sure. The Ex Prime Minister of NZ calls herself 'Miss' even though she is married and kept her last name.

My wife kept her last name but she refers to herself as Mrs. Goat.

  • RG04/11/2009 at 16:45

Somebody might have mentioned it already, but if Sauber do make it to F1 (and I really hope they do), I hope they reinstate their original Black Livery.

Ooooh, I want the blue livery back.

  • startledbunny04/11/2009 at 16:45

So what is Mrs. short for if it isn't missus?

    er Mistress?

My wife kept her last name but she refers to herself as Mrs. Goat.

Mine only uses her maiden name in Facebook, otherwise it's always Mrs Bunny

  • Alison04/11/2009 at 16:45

Presumably Ms would be most appropriate if you wanted to keep your name when you got married.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/11/2009 at 16:46

Somebody might have mentioned it already, but if Sauber do make it to F1 (and I really hope they do), I hope they reinstate their original Black Livery.

I want the Silver livery back. But then they won't be a Mercedes team :(

  • Stuart C04/11/2009 at 16:46

I could have used some more commas there everyone. Sorry about that.

You could borrow some from N Roebuck...

In other news, I see that I was served breakfast by someone called Kamila at 5.32am on September 10. Metabolism can't possibly have been working at that hour.

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 16:46

Are you meant to use Mrs if you keep your own name?

    You aren't supposed to no.

It's supposed to position you in the family I guess. So Miss means "I am the daughter of Mr Blatchford". Mrs means, "I am the wife of Mr C(this is somewhat circular)".

I think that's why we are seeing a lot more "Ms"

  • Christine04/11/2009 at 16:46

Hah I guess you can do what you like. It's your name!

I have always wondered what is the right thing to do. I use Ms because otherwise people instantly assume that Mr C is actually Mr B and we all know that is not true because he is Mr C.

I was wondering, last time BMW pulled out of F1 their engines continued as Megatrons. In keeping with the Transformers theme, should Toyota continue their engines as Optimus Primes? Could be the start of a great rivalry ;)

  • Dan Brunell04/11/2009 at 17:07

There is a giant pond in front of our office where we had a bunch of old and large goldfish. I was the first one to work this morning and walk by the pond and noticed that a sea otter had killed and bitten the heads off of all our goldfish which numbered about 10-15 big fish. I chased it off but the damage has been done.

I work for the state chamber of commerce in Washington state. What I would like to know is how the heck did a full size sea otter traverse all the traffic and hills to get to my office. We are about a good half mile from the water.

Kinda expected it. I'm torn on this one...

On one half i can't bear to see another team leave...on the other hand, i'll be the winner of a conversation that was had earlier with someone saying to be that Renault wont leave F1 because of FRenault/3.5/Clio etc etc, which i told him was a bit of a rubbish reason.

I'm not sure what to think

  • Dan Brunell04/11/2009 at 17:34

What the heck is going on? It's a possibility that next year we will only have three engine manufacturers and the year after that no tires? This is starting to get ridiculous.

This is why you never burn your bridges by offering exclusive deals for anything in Formula One.

We are getting back to proper F1. Instead of useless manufacturers like Toyota blowing billions with no chance of ever achieving anything we will have a grid of mainly Cosworth powered cars with no pointless refuelling.

A tyre supplier will turn up. They always do. If none of the big tyre companies my bet would be that Kumho would love to do F1 and I read somewhere that Bernie has a stake in Avon.

They did F1 before and if they are sole supplier the tyres don't have to be particularly good. They just need to last.

i hate to say it, but i think ferrari are spot on. well done them.

I wonder about the logic. I mean for Ferrari being beaten by Renault must be much worse in PR terms than being beaten by McLaren. When people know the cars they kind of equate them to the teams.

I'm not saying Ferrari are right or wrong with what they say, just thinking about the wider point for Ferrari.

Obviously in theory Ferrari only sell cars so that they can afford to go racing.

  • Dan Brunell04/11/2009 at 18:13

Quick thought here for a second.

CVC must be shaking in their boots right now with all this news.

It might be likely that if things like this continue its current course and F1 will have to continue to give out discounts to survive, they will not be able make their return on investment. Think of it this way: Bridgestone paid FOM a lot to apart of the sport and Bernie has started giving out discounts to races like Germany to get them on the calendar. Even with the short term gains of Toyota and possibly Renault leaving with big payouts, CVC might not be able to keep the payment schedule that it promised its' investors or the institutions that it loaned the money from.

That means either Bernie is going to get sacked by CVC as the fall guy and use it as a opportunity to try sell off FOM or they will try to force Bernie to try to buy back F1 to cut their losses.

That the writing on the wall I am starting to see with all this happening.

  • me04/11/2009 at 18:14

I'm not saying Ferrari are right or wrong with what they say, just thinking about the wider point for Ferrari.

i think what they're worried about is a two-tier championship. likely born out by who has cossy's and who doesn't.

who's going to want to watch that? and why would ferrari want to race and beat them?

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 18:14

because you're a silly billy...you can do my coursework if you want, Turkey Machine

N.B. It's generally a bad idea to get people you consider silly to do your coursework for you.

interestingly enough F1 Wolf said the same about Valencia when he went on the first year.

I was in Valencia too and I promise you that there was absolutely Nooo comparison...

I'd happily go back to Abu next year but wouldn't rush back to Valencia... and probably Abu over Singapore too....

As a spectator here whichever grandstand you were in you had action and views of quite a lot of track... in Valencia you really only got value if you went corporate ....

it’s a shame, but it felt like jake and co. were watching a different race.

Because the TV pics somehow neutered the feel and buzz of the event... probably because there weren't hoards of noisy supporters ... but there were a lot of hot and steamy enthusiasts it's just that the heat dampens the Tigger behaviour a bit....

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 18:15

That the writing on the wall I am starting to see with all this happening.

I have said for a while that Bernie will buy back the rights from CVC at a much reduced price and then flog them off again in a year or two.

  • me04/11/2009 at 18:15

that is a really good point. they lost money on canada too.

As a spectator here whichever grandstand you were in you had action and views of quite a lot of track... in Valencia you really only got value if you went corporate ....

but the racing was still rubbish compared to brazil, right? just the seats were a bit nicer.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 18:18

But nothing happened on track. The TV coverage like Singapore look more like a commission from the tourist board than sports coverage. The race was dull and no-one who watched it on TV anywhere in the world that I have seen thought anything other than it was the dullest race in history.

  • Lewis/LB2204/11/2009 at 18:19

whoops...it's just re-writing my drafts...I'll get there soon now I finished my blog post. Why Turkey Machine is running in the dark in the freezing cold I do not know...

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 18:22

That means either Bernie is going to get sacked by CVC as the fall guy and use it as a opportunity to try sell off FOM or they will try to force Bernie to try to buy back F1 to cut their losses.

I don't think so. Long term planning is something of a knack from Bernie.

Remember when, years ago, the drivers went on strike? A reporter asked Bernie if he was worried. He said, "no there are twenty other people who'd do anything to take their place and all this lot know it".

I think earlier last year the teams thought they could collectively bargain against Bernie and founded FOTA to do that. They thought that they had Bernie over a barrel. But no there were plenty more teams willing to take their place.

This time it wasn't so obvious that there were teams ready. So they put them in place first.

  • Lady Snowcat04/11/2009 at 18:27

but the racing was still rubbish compared to brazil, right? just the seats were a bit nicer.

Compared to Brazil ...yes... but that is the most unfair comparison as Brazil is probably nearly always one of the best if not THE best of the season...

But Brazil has it all as the crowd are amazing... probably they are madder than at Monza... and the track always gives incidents but at West grandstand there were quite a lot of incidents even if they didn't come to much...

At Valencia the only incidents happen in the pit lane but look back at the season and look at races where there was more excitement....

Actually we were all watching the whole Vettel Lewis thing that dominated the first part and the Button Webber thing the final bit... but there was a lot of other action...

Would the one stoppers prevail?.. there was Kazu... and a lot of great fights going on down the back... I'll bet you just didn't see them...

At the track they had the best big screens ever... as well as the stuff right in front of you...

  • me04/11/2009 at 18:29

Compared to Brazil ...yes... but that is the most unfair comparison as Brazil is probably nearly always one of the best if not THE best of the season...

ok, but then comparing it to valencia isn't either, as that's about the worst :)

  • Lady Snowcat04/11/2009 at 18:31

    PS...

just the seats were a bit nicer.

    Hmmm...

Seats were OK but it was hardly that... and most were shaded from the sun although that's not true of a certain amount of the main grandstand... due to the sun's position...

The staff were amazing... so helpful and accomodating at every turn... nothing was too much trouble and they were unfailingly courteous...

I understand your opinion, but believe it's due entirely to the fact that TV captured about 5% or less of how it was if you were there...

    Kubica to... McLaren?

His manager clearly knows nothing about driving. McLaren make oversteering cars and he is going to put an understeering driver in it against Lewis? McLaren managed to make the car suit Lewis and Fernando in 2007 but there is no way they can do that again.

I guess this story suggests Renault are going to walk as well.

BBC also say that Bob Bell (inventor of the Bell Crank) wasn't allowed to put his views in the meeting. Which means that them signing Kubica might not be the sign that we thought it was that Renault were staying. What if they weren't talking to each other (the board and the team)

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 19:16

No. All Toyota have don is make a press statement. Before the FIA can give Quadbike the slot they need Toyota to legally withdraw their entry.

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 19:16

can the fia force toyota to stay?

No but they can say that Toyota can't sell their stake to another team. They want that stake to revert back to the FIA and Toyota to pay a break clause and to then be able to sell the place to Quadbike.

They don't want Toyota to sell their position to Quadbike directly.

I am not sure how championship entry works and whether there is a need to enter every year as well as sign the Concorde Agreement. Either way they have to legal inform the FIA that they intend not to contest the championship.

Yeah. Don't worry. The FIA are trying to stop say Toyota selling their stake to somebody else.

It is actually almost impossible for them to do that. They can only really sell to somebody like Sauber and scrap the team. You can't really "buy" Toyota F1 because a load of their offices are in the Toyota car buildings etc.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 19:24

The whole of that just confused me. I thought it was a simple, Toyota out, Sauber in process

It is. Toyota just haven't filled in the forms at the FIA yet. All they have done is put out a press statement which is not a legal document. Your team is in. It will just take a little while to get the paperwork done

On rFactor (a racing game with downloadable mods) Glock just crashed into the back of me on a quick lap. Does his AI performance live up to his real performance, RG? :D

at least this is solving the motorhome problem.

they'll be plenty of paddock space at this rate.

    Well, there is that.

not my fault! Coming out of Tosa Hairpin and Tim O'Glock launches over the back of me! :)

  • Lewis/LB2204/11/2009 at 19:36

At old Imola, there was no such thing as bad breaking (except for Tosa...still wasn't my fault. If I can, I will drop the replay file on drop.io (if there's a way)...)

Just to quickly say, Sidepodcast homepage rocks. Or at least, I can see what is happening and it will undoubtedly rock more once it all comes together.

And although I am absolutely sure it wasn't designed to be used on a PS3 - so take this in complete jest - LCLT doesn't work on the PS3. :(

Thanks for the couple of links recently (PS3 posts and one to AerialF1 in the comments a week or two ago - twas unexpected). Will be back at the weekend, me hopes.

I'm now going to crawl back into the corner and rock back and forth whispering "no internet... no internet... need internet... need internet... the aliens are coming to get me... need internet..." :D

It's fake suicide is the plot point. Which means it's Max they are blaming.

Max's resignation = Suicide in this analogy

out of my fridge for me to drink.

    Same for me actually!

  • Scott Woodwiss04/11/2009 at 19:51

So is Lou going to go to this, but not actually meet Jenson and just stand a few feet away to the side of him taking pics, like she has done on previous occasions? :D

  • me04/11/2009 at 19:51

Max's resignation = Suicide in this analogy

    So...

...Max was the guy whodunnit in Agatha Christie's books? I knew it

  • Scott Woodwiss04/11/2009 at 19:53

Sooooooooooo, quick thought - does anyone have Goodyear come to mind as the successor to Bridgestone as F1's tyre supplier? Would be cool to see them again, then we're going back to the '90s :D

  • me04/11/2009 at 19:54

Apparently, Goodyear, Pirelli and someone else aren;t interested in an f1 return. I'm sure I saw it in the commenrs eaerlier today

So is Lou going to go to this, but not actually meet Jenson and just stand a few feet away to the side of him taking pics, like she has done on previous occasions? :D

to answer your question about if i'm going it depends on what happens on that day.. i'm not at school then... and if i'm in a good mood i'll head to london... if i need cheering up then er... i may head up to london...

  • Chris04/11/2009 at 19:56

Yeah, unlike DC, JB had a large amount of bodyguards wherever he went. Quite disappointing, but you can kind of understand why

  • Ollie04/11/2009 at 19:56

@My Championship Year@ (goddamn Apple keyboard is re-mapped by PS3)... "My Championship Year - A personal diary of Button's title winning season"... Sounds familiar. Oh year, Damon Hill's Championship Year, a coffee table book which is basically a pictoral book with small excerpts of text from his 1996 season. Still, at least he's willing to spend an hour in a department store signing copies.

  • Lukeh04/11/2009 at 19:56

  • Alex Andronov04/11/2009 at 20:01

    was it a fake resignation?

The point is that the guy gets away with it even though everyone thinks he's been killed as well (but he hasn't).

I assumed that the point was that Ferrari are saying, by putting Todt in to the frame and retiring everyone assumes that Max finally got pushed out, but actually of course he got exactly everything he wanted. He got to retire, but keep his vision going.

I think Ferrari thought, "lets push Max out and we'll get what we want" but they pushed Max out, gave consessions to get him to leave, and now Todt is holding them to those concessions.

  • Scott Woodwiss04/11/2009 at 20:02

*asks sheepishly* By the way, when will we know who's won the Top Gear comp?

    Carry on.

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:02

Mr C or anyone - I need some help with an active server page based website.

I'm trying to work out how to change the email address for the contact us form. I can change the address the emails get sent to, but can't find where I modify the "from" address for the auto reply. Bah.

  • lou04/11/2009 at 20:02

is this in old ASP or new ASP?

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:07

is this in old ASP or new ASP?

There's a difference? Old I think, the server is on SQL 7

I can see a "response.redirect" command in the page, but not where the "from" address might go for the email that gets sent.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)04/11/2009 at 20:07

I hate to ask, but how is this book better than any other cashing in books on F1 lately (Hamilton's spring to mind...)

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:07

*asks sheepishly* By the way, when will we know who's won the Top Gear comp?

soon as the winner returns our email. not sure what happens if they never reply, but the email hasn't bounced so we assume it was entered correctly.

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:07

I can see a "response.redirect" command in the page, but not where the "from" address might go for the email that gets sent.

    Response.Redirect ("AcknowledgeContact.asp")

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:08

There's a difference? Old I think, the server is on SQL 7

response redirect has nothing to do with sending emails. can you copy more of the code?

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 20:08

aww yay! thank you to each and every person who has ever looked at one of my flickr photos :) my photostream view count went over 2,000 today :) and all time views went past 10,000 :) this makes me very happy :)

Those are incredible numbers. Well done. You just have to plug it more.

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:08

    Response.Redirect ("AcknowledgeContact.asp")

that simply sends the browser to another page. you're looking for CDONTS or something similar.

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:08

response redirect has nothing to do with sending emails. can you copy more of the code?

I'll email you if it's OK?

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:09

soon as the winner returns our email. not sure what happens if they never reply, but the email hasn't bounced so we assume it was entered correctly.

Bugger. I was hoping I'd won as I have the day off, but apparently not.

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:09

I'll email you if it's OK?

    can do.

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:10

that simply sends the browser to another page. you're looking for CDONTS or something similar.

AcknowledgeContact.asp simply contains the text of the auto reply.

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:10

Bugger. I was hoping I'd won as I have the day off, but apparently not.

we're assuming if there's no response, the names go back in the hat. but there's a time limit because ticket have to be posted.

hence why we're saying nothing yet.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 20:11

Anyone got a spare £1500 they want to give me?

    http://www.inside-motorsport.com/index.php

  • Scott Woodwiss04/11/2009 at 20:12

we're assuming if there's no response, the names go back in the hat. but there's a time limit because ticket have to be posted.

I would have thought that's the best way. If the first person to be picked doesn't respond, the other names go back in the hat and someone else is selected.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 20:12

soon as the winner returns our email. not sure what happens if they never reply, but the email hasn't bounced so we assume it was entered correctly.

    rrrrrrrrrrrrrubbish

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:12

AcknowledgeContact.asp simply contains the text of the auto reply.

in that case a previous page sends the email.

  • RG04/11/2009 at 20:12

we're assuming if there's no response, the names go back in the hat. but there's a time limit because ticket have to be posted.

Is there actually a hat in this operation?

  • Scott Woodwiss04/11/2009 at 20:13

Is there actually a hat in this operation?

The same one Christine used for the Circuit Cup?

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:14

Is there actually a hat in this operation?

we'll blog it all later. in the meantime you'll all just have to be patient.

  • Andy Taylor04/11/2009 at 20:15

in that case a previous page sends the email.

Hmm. Can't see where. This is a pain. I'll have a search through the asp files and see if I can find the email address that way and let you know if I get stuck. Thanks :)

    Renault news.

Source : Hot topic of Renault board meeting is additional money requested by team for next year due to big loss of TV and Sponsor revenue.

Positive news then? They wouldn't be asking for more money if they were quitting, surely?

Or bad news if they are asking for more money and more likely for the big bosses to refuse.

Joe's been blogging a lot today... Ferrari's 3rd car is still waiting in their garage?

  • Lukeh04/11/2009 at 20:32

he claimed earlier kubs was looking for a new job?

Maybe it was a mistranslation or a typo. He was looking for a new Bob to be the team principal

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 20:32

he claimed earlier kubs was looking for a new job?

could be. we'll only find out the truth if renault indeed pull out. otherwise, it never happened. ;)

  • me04/11/2009 at 20:32

Ferrari's 3rd car is still waiting in their garage?

    please not schumi?

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 20:33

Any more for the PF quiz?

  • Turkey Machine04/11/2009 at 20:33

'sup guys. I'm doing more online sim-racing, but I'll keep a loose eye on SPC. :)

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 20:34

    please not schumi?

with all the unemployed drivers available by then, it definitely won't be schumi. kubica or raikkonen, probably.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 20:34

    please not schumi?

I posted a link from him last night where he said that his decision to comeback was not rational. I took that to mean he is never going to race again.

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 20:34

sadly not :( too much to do for me :(

  • Journeyer04/11/2009 at 20:34

    Agreed.

Not to mention he was asked if it was being considered. He gave a flat no.

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 20:35

I posted a link from him last night where he said that his decision to comeback was not rational. I took that to mean he is never going to race again.

"When asked if he would be interested in returning full-time, Michael's response was clear: "Right now, no.""

I dont think you have much to worry about

  • Jon Waldock04/11/2009 at 20:37

    This is interesting

"Having the meeting with him (Di Montezemolo) I looked at all the points, in particular that it was Felipe, who is like a brother to me. Part of the reason I retired was to hand over the car to him because he deserved to stay in a team with a top car," said the German.

  • Steven Roy04/11/2009 at 20:37

Looks like it is the season for commentators drifting away from the event they are covering. I have the text comentary for Rangers against some Romanians in the champions league running. They did not add a single comment for 14 minutes. Must be as interesting as Abu Dhabi

  • Pat W04/11/2009 at 20:37

    Evening.

  • Nick04/11/2009 at 20:37

    I have dodged shots...

  • Turkey Machine04/11/2009 at 20:38

BBC? Technical issues most probably. Their live updating is a bit hit and miss.

LDM was determined to have Kimi. Had Schumi stayed on, they'd probably have released Felipe from his contract.

  • startledbunny04/11/2009 at 21:46

    Yeah, it's a cracking quiz!

I was trying to name all 17 GP's and I forgot about Monaco. It would have to be a big name race wouldn't it.

That's what I thought too. I think it is a toe-in-the-water deal but you can imagine what the media will be like, particularly in America

    wassup lou?

the annual interschool photo competition is coming up and i was told i should enter (as i kinda got a few prizes last year - and even though i'm not technically part of the photography department they like to show off my work...) but i've got to choose the pics and print them tonight and i'm just trying to find some really nice special ones (am feeling the pressure seeing as i want to do photography at uni)... basically i'm putting myself under no existent pressure.. i think this is what i do when i'm tired..

  • me04/11/2009 at 23:36

basically i'm putting myself under no existent pressure.. i think this is what i do when i'm tired..

It really is. Your chat with Seb worked really well, and sounded great too. I guess it is a lot easier to talk with someone.

the whole path to F1 is really interesting, and you don't often get insight into how the drivers are struggling to get there.

I'm not sure if anyone would answer this question, but it would be interesting to hear how these guys fund their racing careers. They talk about how much it costs to run a car for a year, but how can they do it? I know Mark Webber got money from Yellow Pages in Australia to start him out. I think James Courtney ran out of money. How do these guys get 100000 Euro?!
