Happy Monday Sidepodders! I hope today finds you in good cheer, with a week stretching out ahead of you full of promise and exciting things.
I'd like to start out by thanking Christine for covering my last daily post. Relocating to Edinburgh took up more time than I'd anticipated.
Shall we talk about motorsport for a moment? It is, after all, the reason we're all here today.
This past weekend was Goodwood Festival of Speed. Unfortunately, I didn't get there, but someone was thoughtful enough to post a (terrible quality) youtube clip featuring Christian Horner doing an impression of Seb crying (at 4:53). Adrian Newey didn't crash in his demo this year.
In somewhat F1-ish news, I don't know if you've heard that Will Buxton – the Speed pitlane reporter/GP2 and 3 commentator who Bruno Senna said could make a decent racing driver – is raising funds for cancer research in honour of FOM cameraman and cancer sufferer Chris “Milton” Ivin. Click the collage below to get to the JustGiving site. Unfortunately Will hasn't posted a facial hair update since Friday (we have to wait until Silverstone to see the final result), but I'm hoping it's starting to look like this.
Bridging the gap between Formula 1 and the sciency bit of today's daily, I'd like to give Bruno Geek Points for fixing Lee McKenzie's laptop.
Speaking of electronic things, a group of scientists in Illinois have made a pen that draws flexible circuits.
Moving to other physics things, a ping-pong ball weighing more than 86g will sink indefinitely through a grainy medium. The video is mesmerising!
While we're on grainy things, a gamma ray burst has shown the grains making up the universe to be smaller than first thought (10-48m, rather than the previously theorised 10-35m). This eliminates a few string theories and quantum loop gravity theories, bringing us closer to a unified theory of quantum gravity. Cool, huh?
I hope your Monday rocks!

hullo new daily!
the last few paragraphs of this daily make me feel stupid. but now I'm learning!
At last! I'm sorry it was late.
I'm sorry! I felt dumb the first few...oh, who am I kidding? I still feel a bit dumb (those things usually take a second glance before I understand) ;)
Love science stuff I barely grasp :)
Means they are actually discovering and inventing stuff instead of doing studies on stupid things like you read in the media!
don't be sorry, learning new things is ace.
how did i miss the story of will b's challenge? love some of the comments on his just giving page. great piccy too brij.
'Tis awesome, is it not? I love that there are geeks out there chipping away at the mines of knowledge!
Hehe, I agree...it's why the New Scientist, Smithsonian and Physics Update feeds on twitter are like my heroin!
I found out about it because lookingspiffy was very excited that he'd used her hashtag (#F1BEARDWATCH). I would've missed it in the flood of tweets otherwise ;) 'Tis lovely to see people pouring out support to someone they've never met, just because he contributes to a sport they love, isn't it? (Thanks...I was hoping it didn't look too amateurish. I had to rely on MS Paint, rather than something better, because my version of Photoshop took a hammering in a recent Blue Screen episode. Yes, my dinosaur needs replacing, bless her little silicone circuits.)
As in, not like this guy's attempt at an MS Paint picture http://www.27bslash6.com/overdue.html ;)
Hi folks,
Just popping in for a small bit - I suppose you've all seen the upcoming news about Hispania's new owners.
Very interesting indeed.
No?! I thought the Carabantes were taking it back?
Apparently not. I came across a story this evening that Japanese bank Nomaru (sp?) had signed a deal for it on Friday to be formally announced tomorrow (or later)
saw it earlier, $35m seems a bit cheap though, for an f1 entry: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/07/03/hrt-sold-to-japanese-bank/
Ooohh... hadn't seen Joe's post yet. The other report I saw quoted £24m, some $35 sounds like the right conversion.
If the numbers are right, then Carabante must be desperate to be rid of it.
Hmm. My apologies for missing that in my daily! Hispania must be desperate to be taking $35m though! Is this why they're repeating their well-choreographed "drop the Indian driver" routine?
It's definitely an odd story. I wonder how much Carabante put into it though, especially considering Joe's comments that he doesn't actually own anything.
we mentioned it in the debrief which was published a whole 40 minutes ago. i cannot believe you haven't listened to it word for word already :) :)
Carabante would essentially just be selling his entry to the series.
agreed. but that's still a cheap price, no?
Depends what the entry for the 11th team is worth I suppose

no-one tell windsor ;)
I'm sorry, I was up to my elbows in sentence-crafting ;)
Point. Do you suppose they're saving the rest of the budget for...well, all the things a Formula 1 team should be spending money on?
Common sense and solid whispers rarely reach cuckoo land
heh
I must love and leave you...my bus back to Edinburgh leaves in 6.5 hours (the hostel in Edinburgh didn't have a bed for me this weekend, so my choices were sleep on the streets or come up here to Stirling. I took the cushy option).
Night Bridget
forgot to link a video so added it as a comment
Crazy cheap
blimey. you must tell us how your trip has been when you get a minute. sounds crazy.
Night.
I'm also going to bed too. I should've been there an hour ago. :)
Good excuse to go and see Stirling I suppose :)
Must've been something else in EDI though?
I'll write a bit about it on my personal blog. It's a long story that involves flying around ash clouds and a chorus of snoring Italians ;)
Lovely excuse to be in Stirling! I'm coming back for the Highland Games on the 7th of August. Yes, there were other beds...for £75 a night (which is a tad out of my budget, as much as I wanted a double bed to myself)
Nighty night!
Night Pat
Anyhoo, as I said, I only popped in for five - will be back in the morning
Night folks
Sleep tight, Sidepodders! I'll chat more when I get back to E'burgh!

i have already been up for 2 hours.. i think i'm broken.
You're just an early bird. :D Good morning!
hahaha! i've never been an early bird. i will only actively get up early for an awesome event like goodwood.. definitely broken.
Hahaha! Awww. :) It was a good weekend for you, no? :D
How long before we see the return of Sakon Yamamoto? :D
Seriously, though, if, as I suspect, they stick with Colin Kolles, then there may be little difference with the team except maybe in its name, and definitely in its funding.
So HRT = Myspace.
Sounds about right. :D
hehehe an awesome weekend thanks. just had to say bye to my german friend. how is everyone else today?
i'm good! just watched the Europe race edit, which showed little of Lewis and even less (read: virtually nil) of Jenson. Good song, though. :)
the whole thing is very intriguing. first the TATA backed Karthikeyan gets pushed aside to make space for Red Bull backed Ricciardo. That around the same time when Carabantes were said to take control of running of the team with Kolles slowly getting ready to move on.
Now Carabantes are said to be bought out by a bank ... As they have no idea how to run the team I doubt the bank will leave them there in any management position.
So what was said last week may not be the case any longer.
Where does this leave Kolles, Willis, Karthikeyan, Ricciardo ...
Interesting
Afternoon podders (not to be confused with Stoke FC..)
was it Canada or Brazil that had problems a few years back with flexible circuits?..... ahem... :D
Just saw Kai off on her first train journey of many today.
Had an awesome few days. Sidepodpeople are fabulous. :)
I see the bank as being a CVC-type entity. They'll keep it running, but leave the people to their own devices for the most part. Given that Kolles has supposedly trashed the Williams rumors, it seems that he can keep running HRT - at the right price. As long the bank pays for it, then I see him staying. The Red Bull money no doubt will help too.
Indeed. Woohoo! :D
they really are. Janna your hospitality was amazing :)
On another note - anyone willing to guess what, if any, their team will be called starting next year? :D
... hm, there is cheap team to be picked again, I only hope that HRT will not turn into Taureau Rouge or something similar and a quaretr of the grid will all be redbulled ...
Taureau Rouge with ricciardo and vergne as drivers :-)
I don't think they'll pick this team up too. Buemi and Alguersuari aren't THAT good to justify a 3rd team for both Ricciardo and Vergne. :D
Other than Epsilon Euskadi (who I believe have also undergone a name change after running into money troubles), I can't easily think of anyone who's interested to get into F1 now outside of Kolles. I'm sure there are interested parties, but they are not readily obvious.
Japania?
I'm interested. I'm very interested. I'd love to be a team owner...I just don't have a hundred million hanging around in petty cash waiting to be blown on a team. And I'd have Senna and Chandhok back as drivers (but I'll admit I'm a bit biased).
I am quite sure these Japanese bankers are the reluctant owners who had the choice either to book in bad loan or takeover the team they bankrolled and hopefully one day get back at least some money. I wonder if any cash actually changes hands ...
Indeed so.
But I wonder if Red Bull knew about this development when negotiating the Ricciardo deal...
I'd imagine so. Didn't Ricciardo have a contract with Red Bull? If so, surely Hispania would've needed to buy him out of his contract; Hispania have had no money for...do I really need to put a time-frame on that?...so I'm sure someone must've asked the $35M question before signing him over.
Nobody signed Ricciardo over, Red Bull placed him there and sent some cash along
Then either Ricciardo was a naughty boy and we didn't hear about it, or Red Bull knew. They're a pretty savvy company; I can't imagine them going into a deal like that blind.
Red Bull bought a seat for Ricciardo to get him race seat time, with an intent of him driving for RBR or STR next year.
Well red bull saw team short of cash and had a driver that could do with some racing mileage. Question is if red bull knew about the looming sale of HRT before they did the Ricciardo deal.
So webber was off with Ducati this weekend and Red Bull decided they needed to give ricciardo a race seat fast...
Ciao Felipe
I maintain; I think they knew. If I were them, I would have sent one of my boys to the most rubbish team on the grid without some assurance that he'd be exposed to some car development time. No money, no development.
Shouldnt there be a big huge US flag explosion around here somewhere? :)
I think they just wanted to give him more running time than friday practice.
I dont think it was a good idea for him to take it as Liuzzi will likely beat him for a while and marko really doesnt rate liuzzi
Hard to see how Disco Dan could say no to Red Bull.
And FWIW, Liuzzi also beat Vettel in their first few races together at STR. But it was Vettel who got the bigger points haul in the end.
Oh right, I forgot to include that in the daily. Yay America.
If Marko likes Ricciardo, he'll turn a blind eye. Remember Turkey last year - he loves Vettel and jumped to his defense, even when it looked like he might be in the wrong.
Maybe HRT simply owed Red Bull for all the red bull beverage consumed and the only way to pay was to offer a race seat :-)
Other interesting point is the radio and twitter silence from Narain TATA camp
Ooops...
Hehe!
If you'd been kicked out of your race seat, would you go on twitter about it? Chandhok didn't talk about losing his Hispania seat for a while...but, to be fair, he kept up the stream of tweets about other stuff.
If I were the only sponsor of the team I sure would have something to say ...
I have been looking back through the comments. Maybe it's an early morning thing but I can't entirely work out what's happened!
Disco Dan is driving for HRT?
Yep. Effective Silverstone.
Probably
Also they might not be called HRT
Also they might not even make it there
True on all counts. :D
"Oops, sorry guys, this team was sucking our cash, so we have a complimentary spot on the billboard that's still begging to be filled"?
Joe Saward fills us in... http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/07/03/hrt-sold-to-japanese-bank/
summary :-)
1) red Bull placed Ricciardo to HRT, and likely included some $$$ with him
2) HRT pushed Narain aside, the guy backed by TATA, TATA being the only real sponsor of HRT ...
3) Carabantes said to be taking management control from Kolles, Kolles staying for now but ready to move on ...
4) fast forward few days - HRT is said to have been sold to some Japanese bankers who apparently bankrolled the team, Carabantes out
Fabulous. Sounds like a great career move for him!
Journeyer has the news of the Filipino basketball team being stranded in Dubai hit the news over there? http://sport360.com/uae/news/149671
I'm not much of a news-watcher, but that's disgusting organisation! I would be very narked if I were them!
Off to catch my bus "home"! Chat to yous later! (See? I'm starting to observe the local lexicon with the pluralisation of "you.")
No, just heard it now. Thanks for sharing, though! Interesting stuff. Manny Pangilinan (their team owner, and rumored to be making a foray into the NBA) will not be pleased.
Monaco on Top Gear is seriously EPIC. They're even using the FOM cameras!
I think thats because they are leased by the ACO in monaco?
Otherwise they would have to have duplicate cameras for formula renault?
Good morning everyone! How are we all today?
True. But still, to use those cameras was a nice touch.
Ooooh. Apparently, Sebastian Vettel is this year's TG-F1 driver guest. That should be fun. Can he beat Rubens' time?
updated lotus livery with GE and Caterham ... http://yfrog.com/gylz9tqj
will HRT sport Red Bull and Nomura ? :-)
Interesting how relatively little space GE gets compared with all Tony's brands. may say something about the proportion of funding that comes from him compared to what comes from outside ...
Agreed. GE seems to love that space as well - they were on the same spot when they had a similar B2B deal with Ferrari (albeit with a smaller logo).
http://www.maxiview2000.com/ferrari/imgs/oc035.jpg
smaller than TicTac :)
Football really needs to do something about those wrong referee calls ... this is kind of unbelievable :-)

are mr and mrs c around?
Hehe i guess they decided...
Cars > Energy drink
Similar to Johnny walker on the mclaren,
There is a 2nd GE logo on the nose too
The Dell logos seem to have got smaller, sharing a cloud with Intel.
Guess the Intel deal was just a subset of the Dell one
well, should not be forgotten that besides those few small logos on the car GE also gets to sell hundreds of aircraft engines to Air Asia :-)
400 more logos!
EQ8 seems to have been dropped completly http://yfrog.com/h4vipmhj

morning folks
Good morning!
Lunch time for me :)
HI Nick,
How are you today?
Tired but productive
Morning all,
Those that went enjoy Goodwood?
Ooooohh....
Virgin have announced a tech partnership with McLaren this morning
Linky wink
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92832
Interesting. So our F1 pairings are: Ferrari-Sauber, McLaren-Virgin, RBR-STR, Mercedes-Force India, Williams-HRT, and Renault-Lotus (although that last one is rather fraught).
RBR partner with team lotus over gearboxes the same as williams do for HRT
Ahhh, yes. But RBR supply STR an entire chassis (well, most of it, anyway). :D
Not really now
Technically, they don't, but their cars are still so similar.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/spreading-the-good-word
A little surprise for Mr and Mrs C.. kinda.
Similar in every way, except pace
It has always been such. Even when STR were faster than RBR. :D
In livery although the Toro Rossos have more gold now. they concepts are different now :P
Force India has partnership with McLaren, not Mercedes, right ?
Yep, although lessened in the last year
Lotus also partner with williams for their wind tunnel
and do not forget Williams - Lotus partnership
everybody partners everybody ... so who is going to race who ?
Who needs competition when they're all such good friends...
and almost forgot the latest buddies Red Bull and HRT (via Toro Rosso) which in fact makes now Red Bull partners with Williams via HRT through Toro Rosso. Through Williams Lotus comes to picture and here I am loosing the plot ...
I dont like it,
If they cant design and build a car, they shouldnt be in F1
Dare you to draw a diagram.
If who can't design a car?
:D
An F1 team.
By allmeans that can be a collection of entities, but if they have to go into partnership to get it done they shouldnt be there.
This isnt like sharing a windtunnel, we are heading back to the jnr team sillyness
I don't see a problem in tech partnerships at all. It's how the sport works nowadays.
How few teams every design their whole car? As far as I know, Red Bull are the squad that do the most in house.
I am not sure how far the Force India - McLaren (or Mercedes ?) partnership goes but I think it is time for FIA to look into these things before we have the customer cars right in front of our eyes. I was kidding here earlier today about Red Bull taking over HRT and supplying us with a quarter of cars on the grid. That was a joke but if all these partnerships get out of hand F1 will have a problem.
I have nothing against purely commercial partnerships when one team uses and pays for (in any form) for facilities not fully utilized by another teams. Good on both parties, one makes money from their earlier investment the other saves some money by not having to make that investment.
But once one team starts posting their staff into the other teams that begins to stink ... But Da Force got away with it and others now follow ...
Using external companies isnt an issiue, i dont see what the sport has to gain by making all the smaller teams subsiduaries of the bigger ones.
It just makes the sport more monotone,
Not Ferrari?
An entry is nearly worthless now, since there is no longer a deposit and there's a vacant space on the grid. Hispania have very few assets since many of the staff have "day jobs" in one or both of Colin Kolles' other teams. $35m is not that bad a deal.
Hmmm. If I had $35m and I had to buy either HRT or Myspace with it, which one would I buy?
I'd probably buy Myspace. :D
HRT, Myspace is burning money faster than HRT will ever do :-)
You could buy myspace, spam it to an inch of its life and then then buy HRT
Just found out that Hangout in Google+ comes with built-in Google Translate. Which means that even if you don't the language of the people you're hanging out with, you'd still understand them (at least as much as Google's translation will allow you to).
Mind. Blown.
tried to do that, almost ended up with separatist region created by Merc, Mac, Virgin and Force but finally managed to tie them to the rest via lower level Cosworth connection :-)
Share! :D
They tried buying Arrows a year before it went bust, back when it looked like a healthy team. The paperwork took ages and in the end the High Court ruled the paperwork offered insufficient security to Arrows' debtors.
I'd guess at Red Bull being savvy.
http://f1wolf.posterous.com/everybody-loves-somebody
(sorry, pen not working, no proper writing pad in hand and other excuses necessary :-) )
Sauber also share drivers with Mclaren :)
Nice. Interesting, that. I'm a bit surprised that before today, Macca/Merc/FIF1 seemed to have its own universe.
But they weren't. Force India sponsors Hispania too ;)
Ferrari out source a chunk of their projects.
Wasn't there also an issue of the judge in the hearing not believing a drinks company could effectively run a racing team. Apparently he'd never heard of Red Bull.
So Williams are the centre of everything... It's confusing, but nowhere near as confusing as the F1 --> GP2 // GP3 ties.
Both (Mercedes engine, McLaren electronics/KERS).
This was 2002 - RBR hadn't run a racing team yet. Then again, surely if a clothing company can win F1 titles (Benetton), a drinks company can too?
True, but Red Bull had been involved in racing pretty heavily since the early '90's.
As proven last year.
Engines, gearbox, KERS, electronics. Apart from the gearbox, the team has outsourced all of those things since it started as Jordan. In fact when it was Jordan it only made the prototype in-house because the other cars were made at David Price Racing.
Mostly only in sponsorship deals. And had Peter Sauber listened to them in 2001, he would've run Enrique Bernoldi instead of Kimi Raikkonen. Dietrich Mateschitz learned from that experience, and has learned to be hands-off in the actual running of the team, leaving it to Horner (sadly, with Marko involved too).
I'm also talking outside F1.
Ferrari's a bit complicated because it has quite a few things made by outside companies but it doesn't make it clear which bits. Though the fact it makes its own engine should increase the in-house percentage some.
No changes at yas untill next year, 2 teams going to do straight line testing there http://www.thenational.ae/sport/formula-one/yas-marina-circuit-to-stay-same-for-2011-abu-dhabi-gp
Because McLaren used to be reluctant to share with anyone at all. The FIF1 deal was groundbreaking because it was the first time McLaren had been willing to share stuff with anyone (and Mercedes sharing an engine was rare). Then McLaren and Mercedes split, but the nature of their deal with Force India meant both had to remain connected to it. None of this necessarily made them any more willing to link up with other teams until today.
There was, but by that point I think the judge thought this was the latest in a string of nonsense ideas Tom Walkinshaw had had relating to the case. Much like the boy who cried "wolf", Tom's good idea was dismissed because of the number of bad ideas (largely involving share-juggling and interesting contract interpretations) he'd stated before.
If it had simply been a case of the judge having never heard of Red Bull, the impression could probably have been corrected in the court room. Given the situation Tom was in at the time...
Very good points you make here, Alia.
Explains a lot.
Benetton bought a reasonably sound team. Arrows' soundness was very much in question at that point. If you're going to jump straight into a F1 team without doing other series first, it helps if you aren't going to get any nasty surprises when you get there.
I hope they do not mess up my chart :-)
http://twitter.com/#!/alanbaldwinf1/statuses/87833544755392512
Good morning :)
Ferrari can race Mercedes, McLaren and Williams - they're the only four teams that don't receive any help from other teams.
Here's a little picture of the Red Bull F1 Spy: http://i52.tinypic.com/21e6895.jpg
I am afraid I can't find a better pic :s
Joe was speculating they might become the Renault works team
I guess that would leave the team called renault running cosworths?
What do you mean?
RenalutSportF1s main team in F1
I guess that would be mainly from a marketing point of view as they have to give the same engines to everyone now
Oh dear. The team that nearly won the GTE-Am class of the Imola race yesterday has been excluded. One of the drivers spent too long in the car. The driver in question was... ...Pat Long.
That would mean that Group Lotus would take the control of the other team, no?
engines yes, but there is more technology Renault can offer and maybe the car company is not too keen to disclose it to the team that still bears its name but in fact is kind of Lotus
Oh dear - and such a basic, basic rule too.
or lose control of Bahar and everything ... that team has no other connection with Renault now than engine supply ...
I dont think renault are stopping them, they are just in the middle of a huge mess
I sincerely hope so. Williams desperately need something, anything, to pull them back up the grid.
money ...
Money isn't enough. They've always done best in works partnerships - they haven't had one since 2005. They haven't won for that long, too.
Yes - though it could be a Pro/Am mix-up. The Pro class allows one driver in the car for up to 4 hours in a 6-hour race, whereas the Am class only allows 3 hours and 30 minutes.
So Renault leave the team they did own and won championships with, for another. It is F1 I guess, crazy is common place.
Renault won championships with Williams
Afternoon.
I see that SweetF1 have used Lukeh's work without credit: http://sweetf1.blogspot.com/2011/07/news-hamilton-in-red-bull-move-intrigue.html
Other than that, how's tricks?
Hi Gavin,
I'm not bad, how are you?
The definition of lazy...
Hey Leigh,
Not so busy as last week, which is good so far as holidays start on Friday.
Renault backed away from being team owners. That does not mean they do not want to be involved as major technical partners. They obviously do not see the current Genii Group Lotus operation to be the one. And they may not be alone with so many people jumping the ship ...
why not red bull then?
They did sell the team to them in the first place, still seems daft to me.
I wonder if we will see those leaving Renault turn up at Willaims ;)
Do not know but does Red Bull look like a team in desperate need for strategic partner ?
The alternative at the time was the route chosen by Honda Toyota and BMW ...
No, but if I was Renault, I'd back Red Bull as my works team...
:D Williams want to feel loved and needed.
May not be what Red Bull wants though...
True, but they still owned 20%? of the team until the end of last year. Could have kept and had the technical partnership with the team actually called Renault :P
Its covered in infiniti logos!
I think lotus were keen to have a technical partnership with the team

Which is a Renault company now?
Well it could be they did not like what genii did to team and decided to back away
Part of Nissan which has an interlocked shareholding with renault
ie. they each own a chunk of each other
They should have done a deal at the begining of the year, not sure why they didnt
Kind of.
The success of team however is Red Bull's , they may not want anybody else to share the limelight + what if they do not see their future with Renault at the back of the car ...
mmm Williams Renault....
Very nice! :)
Positively mid-table in 2011 though...
Yeah, there was talk of rebranding those engines as Infinitis but that never happened.
Odd indeed.
Maybe a williams deal would make more sense.
they can use it in an automotive context. Red Bulls application would be limited
cheers :)

I'd say this link is more appropriate for the HRT thing: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92839
As is this link: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-04/spanish-formula-1-team-hispania-is-sold-to-buyout-firm-thesan-capital.html
They mention Nomura as well, who helped set up Thesan. But Thesan says Nomura did not back the HRT acquisition.
Did any of you goodwood attendee's see the Audi R18 run on saturday? I didn't buy a programme and found it really tough to keep on top of what was running at what time etc. Kept my eyes open all day and never saw it :-( ......booo hoo!

Nice! Would love to read his writing. Too bad it's way too expensive. :( Nice of him to comment too!
Hi!
So Hispania has been sold, Virgin will work with Mercedes and Williams will make and important announcement today!
What a monday!
It is expensive, but Paul foray is mainly illustrations - he is insanely good. His website has a load of examples of his work - http://automobiliart.blogspot.com/
Holy cow. A chap got quite lucky in a Brazilian Stock Car race in Interlagos yesterday (30 secs in)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKx1zGjYDto&feature=youtu.be
They should add an Inteligence test to whatever racing licence you need for that.
driving around like that, what was he thinking!
Very lucky. Also, I didn't know Jacarepagua was still running. I thought they demolished that place already.
That was Interlagos
Isnt it going to be demolished/rebuilt after the world cup olympics they are hosting?
Bit slow on the uptake...
Is that Tuka Rocha, who raced in A1GP?
My mistake. Half the original circuit remains.
Yep
Silly boy. Very lucky. Is it me or is that series particularly hazardous?
It has been widely rumoured in the past few years that some of the safety standards of the local motor racing authority are somewhat... lax or plain ignored.
Did the Audi R18 run at Goodwood on Saturday? Somebody please put me out my misery and let me know if it did or not. Spent most of the day with my eyes open for it and never saw it once on track.
I don't know for sure but Andre Lotterer was supposed to be driving it & Pat got this picture https://picasaweb.google.com/PatrickWotton/2011GoodwoodFOSSaturday#5624918807561131266 which looks like he was with the car. Sorry I can't be more definite.
Also Kai got this picture https://picasaweb.google.com/106400214729093018812/Goodwood2?authkey=Gv1sRgCP_3w5Tdv-Pkfg#5624836896191445794
Amazing that after destroying 2, they raced 2 last weekend AND built one for FoS!
Finally someone! Ty.....
I saw Andre in the motorcycle paddock and hoped he was driving the R18, be my luck that he did. I kept my eyes open on track but it was soo hard trying to keep on top of seeing everything and then the track action!
It was my first Goodwood and I wonder what everyone's opinions are. I have kinda mixed feelings regarding the day. I LOVED the access we could enjoy in the paddocks to the cars, really happy how close you could get. I thought the venue was stunning, Lord March is a lucky man. If anything I was a little disappointed with time we got to see each car on track. It must've been literally 5-10 secs max depending where we were stood. I kinda knew it'd be limited anyway due to the nature of the course but I was a little miffed it was one run and then over until later on in the day. I suspect the Silverstone Classic has spoiled me in my expectations, as you at least get the see the cars turn back up a min or two later for howeevr many laps. I was amazed to get be picked up and took back to our car in a courtesy car...how cool is that?!! Little things like handing out timetable would be amazing, I was reluctant to pay the £12 for a programme and looking back now it was essential.
Ha ha.....but yes gutting.
Done and announced
What will be interesting to see is what happens to Renault (Enstone) and Cosworth.
Hoooo
I really loved it especially the access but I'm not so concerned about seeing the cars running as looking at them close up and seeing the drivers. Depending on where you are you can see them go up & come back down the hill & drive into the paddock. Whilst I did buy a programme (bought a voucher with my ticket) you can download both a timetable and list of drivers from the website. A tip for future visits
Nice....any impact on the other 'Renault' branded teams or engine supplies?
Oh if only audi could've joined the party or Aston Martin
None yet.
The Rothmans-esque livery fits in even more now.
:D
Suppose that's where the weekend ticket comes in...one day perving at cars, the next watching them actually on track...
Any of you go for the Champagne and Salmon lunch or hang out in the VIP/POSER area?
What are the bets they'll change to the Winfield colours next year?
;)
Not the people I was with. Goodwood organic burgers and hanging out by Scrutineering/F1 Paddock to see the drivers.
My thoughts are:
"How long do Cosworth supply Hispania and Virgin before their patience wears thin?"
yeh, the best thing to do is not to make a big deal of watching the cars run up the hill, sure watch the ones you want to, but go off and see other things when you can...
I normally wander up the hill and watch the cars as they run up, then when at the top watch some of the rallying (they circulate more regular than the hillclimb) and then check out the top hill climb paddock as you get to see all the cars as they arrive plus any drivers that appear.....
This might be the first proper good news about Williams for a long time...
I bumped into Mr D Rascal outside of the Salmon and Champaz. area!
Ditto....I feel really bad but I had to laugh. There was this woman trying so hard to appear cool and sophisticated. She was resting up against one of the outdoor water pools...I didn't have the heart to tell her that her dress was in the pool behind her ;-)
My first time there you see, will go for a weekend next time and also go with people that know a bit about cars. Seriously the family I went with say they're petrolheads but really they only care about F1. All those drivers and cars there and 90% washed over their heads...where as to me it was the rare stuff that was interesting. luckily be seeing the F1 this week in the shire. I did struggle to keep everyone interested and see the things I wanted. My OH deliberately made a point of not looking at anything before we went so they thought they'd enjoy it more....new experience and not knowing what to expect etc. It kinda left me feeling I had to do make all the decisions, what to see and when. Suppose I could've done with a little support....but anyway that's another topic/
they were nice!
Maybe they will supply 4 teams by giving the IP to infiniti so they can supply red bull with a fully badged infiniti engine?
when the low cost engine supply by Cosworth was announced in 2009 Mosley said they will need 4 teams as customers to make that price work. they lost Lotus, now Williams, so only two are left and who knows in what direction those Virgin eyes are looking now ...
looks like they may have a problem unless they can now make the engines much much cheaper than a year ago ... raise price although I am not sure they will be allowed as there is some sort of price cap on the engines or lose money ...
and if they wan to to continue beyond 2013 they have to start pumping money into V6 project ...
the JPS livery is back on grid already, Marlboro one never left the building so why not Rothmans or Winfield ...
Gold Leaf for Team Lotus next year?
;)
christine's working hard today:
http://www.f1minute.com/news/virgin-racing-and-mclaren-becoming-technical-partners
and
http://www.f1minute.com/news/williams-confirm-renault-engine-deal-from-2012
I seriously doubt that we will see them under the new formula.
I do wonder where the time is found.
Agreed.
same!
Christine makes me feel lazy
:D
Im not so certain, the basic engine underneath it will be good, plenty of military projects could use it.
They could also use F1 to showcase it, and licence the engine in a similar way to ARM do with processors
Also i am not certain, but i think they are somehow tied up in group lotus, who will be badging their engine in indycar.
Maybe they want a lotus engine in F1 and to be the sole user?
it's all relative. we are men and evolution hasn't be so kind as to enable our mutitasking genes :)
Cosworth said no to IndyCar
There is that
I thought that was Judd?
Ah yes, im confused with someone else
They tried to get in last year as a sponsor with lotus, but i think honda blocked it http://media.il.edmunds-media.com/lotus/ns/lotus_f34_ns_315102_815.jpg
Nodecision yet
Interesting RT by tony: http://twitter.com/#!/tonyfernandes/statuses/87879383657881600
changing the name to Caterham Renault? DO IT!!
Is there a rule about engine makers being able to only make engines for 3 teams?
Happy Independence Day my British friends! ...oh. :)
I'm off to take some pictures outside on this gorgeous day. Back in a bit.
Have fun
:)
oh my god, Renault and Williams again!!! yaaaaaay!! #nothere
shouldn't affect jake etc, but worth keeping an eye on:
A group of senior BBC executives are reportedly calling for a ban on actors, writers and other top talent from using social networking sites such as Twitter to discuss their work at the BBC.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcasting/news/a328120/bbc-to-ban-talent-staff-from-using-twitter.html
I guess they're not fans of Twitter. :D Odd, though, considering almost every other network worldwide does it.
considering how much free publicity they've given the site, it's an odd turnaround.
AS far as I understood it this morning, it was more to do with banning them from discussing future projects, but I only breezed through the news.
It has stemmed from too many early reveals about several of their top shows, including Doctor Who
that's what prompted it, yes. could be wider-reaching effects, depending on what's decided.
True
i know, but on the one hand, half the corporation are saying "check out twitter" and now a bunch of people are about to say "not so much of that tweeting, ya hear?".
they made their bed.
But yes, it's a sad indication of where the BBC's heads are at
They would be better off telling people what they can and cant talk about in public and when.
twitter is largely irrelevant to the problem
that'd be a hell of set of rules.
I don't think so. I can't believe they don't have some sort of "discussion barrier" drawn up. (i.e. - show starts on "x" date; "y" presenter cannot reveal for seven days prior", etc...)
Not really, you sign a contract, you keep it confidential until the bbc/producers say it can be released to the public
Its common practice, i wouldnt start tweeting about projects my employer is working on
Eww. They were groase.
it is but there is some provision about agreement of other parties (not sure who everything must agree) and then they can supply more teams.
ohhh i'm angry, just noticed this reply i got from Sweet F1 regarding them using Lukeh's photoshops without credit or anything
http://sweetf1.blogspot.com/2011/07/news-hamilton-in-red-bull-move-intrigue.html?showComment=1309786937418#c6562587029725384982
people like that make me angry.
at least he's kinda credited lukeh. but arrgghh!
never heard of them, but there is a credit at the top, or was that added afterwards? doesn't seem like a particularly worthwhile site tbh.
it's like he's saying, "we don't think he deserves the credit, but we'll give it to him because we're nice."
not the best way to go about it.
added after complaints. it also kinda angers me they haven't credited Timos either. i know it's silly but i would go mental if someone didn't even think to credit my work.
it's still not in the original post - they just decided to leave lou's comment as a "clarification".
i know. how kind of them...
At least we got it sorted. Doesn't sound like they handled it well!
hopefully they'll think twice about not crediting someone in the future..
probably shocked someone picked up on them.
have you seen google image search btw? a great way to see who'd nicked you photos. here's our most stolen (and largely uncredited image): http://bit.ly/lclwXc
although they have just deleted my reply pointing out they need to credit people and only left in the first comment O.O but never mind.
:o i don't know how you do that.. but woah...
it is a very nice photo tho. :)
can upload a photo, or link to one and it'll match anything. click on the camera icon here:

ohhh thank you. very interesting.
Points for Karun on his Goodwood fever tour caught on video. Maybe it's already been posted, but this is clearly a kid in a candy store.

Lou got the people who wrote the article to give you proper credit - only after telling her that your pics were fair game because they found them on some forums and never read your blog anyway.
Legally, they are wrong. That's like saying pirating a game is legal purely because it was already on a torrenting site.
That really annoys me, how rude can you be? At least they saw sense eventually I suppose but I really don't appreciate that sentiment whatsoever.

Hi Lukeh!
He is awesome like that. His enthusiasm is really contagious (perhaps why Chandhok and Senna always get put on PR duty?).
Richard Cregan has decided not to make changes to Abu Dhabi's circuit
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/92842
Doh.
he decided this after valencia??
I guess he was worried Abu Dhabi might not be the worst race of the year :)
:) :) :)
Helloooooo :D
I have found my phone :) :) :) :)
was it in the fridge?
My boss had found it and taken it home so it was safe ♥
hehe, poor nico :)
Wha? Is there a fridge based story I'm yet to hear?
He went to get a drink and lost his phone. It was in the fridge, I'm always losing my phone in the fridge :)
gotta be a #rankings earner: https://twitter.com/#!/nico_rosberg/status/86113210528317440
Heheheh easily done! I left mine on the counter at work. Presumably because I put it down to do something then wandered off.
Love that Le Tour is back on, come on ITV I want today's highlights on ITV Player :)
watching an interesting video about marketing photography. figure it might be of use to lou: http://vimeo.com/25769227
far too much baby talk, but also insight into how to get started as a freelance photographer.
have you tried it on the ipad?
Didn't know it was on there
came out today, haven't looked yet.
Ooooh THE SONG!!
The web player is atrocious so I'll have a look now
:D
Seems to have a different selection on there to the web player. No Tour de France, but more dramas and so forth.
Picture quality is still fairly poor with a lot of artifacts.. Marginally better than web version.
At least it was free. :)
sounds about right. not flash means it won't ruin your machine while watching :)
Actually now I'm into an actual show rather than ads the picture isn't too bad. It ain't iPlayer or Eurosport though.
:)
I found Motorsport UK, Renault Clio Cup at Thruxton. They didn't put ads in the ad break. This is ITV..I'm amazed.
thanks Mr c, will check it out :)
linkin park are live on itunes right now. they've added a bleep "tone" as well as the muting. impossible to watch.

2nd pic isn't loading chappie :(
Hmm, fine here. wierd :(
I just asked for a fan to be sent to my room because it's so flippin' hot in here. I get cranky when I can't cool myself down.
I need to keep updating my name. :)
:D
I have to confess that I'm not totally loving this hotel. Maybe if I tell the comments I can stop having that gnawing feeling.
#demanding :P
I think Janna has spoilt you :)
Yeah they're erm a bit northern... You'll get used to it!
i said you need a tour t-shirt.
A bit northern? Thats a good thing isn't it?
Kai should get the manics to d...actually, no
Hehehe :D Depends if you're used to people fawning over you in a hotel or not I guess! :P
hehe! Yes, very.
Well now, that is a fact. It's bad when a hotel billed to be excellent is not as excellent as Janna!
It's just being friendly, its what we're good at ;).
"I give this hotel 4 Jannas out of 10"
Yes. I think I've been here too long. I do find myself thinking "take what you're given and go away" a lot more often than I used to I think... :P
It's not the lack of fawning that I don't like, because everyone here has been great with my food issues and stuff, it's that it's right on the main road and it's in a busy spot. I need a little time with less happening. This week has completely blown me away so far and I need a rest. I may ask for another room tomorrow. The walkway outside has a signal for those in the crosswalk and it drives me nuts all day.
hehe!
Eurgh!! Okay that's not demanding, that's cruel and unusual punishment!!
And it's just so friggin' expensive around here. The burgers here are up to 12.50GBP!!! That's insane in USD! And it wasn't even that good. And I didn't have the energy to scope out another place to eat after a crazy long and tiring day.
Are you eating at a football stadium?
That can't be right surely!!? £12??? Sure it's not £1.20?
that is correct. Decimal is right, it's set on OUCH. They won some rosettes last year or something so they get to charge that. I can't go completely bankrupt in 2 weeks! :(
That's flipping crazy! If someone tried to charge me a tenner for a burger, I'd throw it at them I think.
keyboard player from linkin park has a touch screen that contains just the couple of notes that he needs. no duff keys for him :)
But, on the good side, breakfast is included, there is stuff I can actually eat at breakfast (it appears), the fan is cooling things down wonderfully, and keeping out some of the road noise, and everything will seem better after some sleep.
And this area is gorgeous. Tomorrow I have an all day tour of the lots of stuff and lunch away from the hotel, so hopefully it won't break the bank.
did you walk into jamey olivers gaff by mistake?
I should go check. Or at least what's his face, Gordon Ramsey could come out and yell at me or something.
What do you guys watch on tv now, if anything?
News is at 10 if you like that.
What you're supposed to do with UK TV is watch soaps the entire evening then realised you've wasted your time on terrible tv :)
Whatever is on Dave usually.
Crazy prices. Must be some fancy place.. hope you got a lot with it..
Ask the hotel where to go tomorrow.
It's like at home, just replace 'reality tv' with soaps.
Eastenders is starting now on BBC3 if you're missing Laaaandon already
It's nice, but it's not worth it so far. I'll check my booking and see if I'm stuck here because I prepaid or if I can mosey on off somewhere else. Ambleside is very, very small, too, and I'd like to have more shops to walk to and stuff.
On a Monday, there is nothing worth watching so I listen to something or hit the recordings.
I must be having fun. I had no idea it was Monday.:)
It's the same at home, though, nothing on Monday nights.
Great post, Lukeh. I left a comment.
I don't know the area at all but looking at the map the nearest bigger places are Windermere and Kendal.. Keswick is on Derwent Water which might be nice. Is the tour with other people?
Sometimes it is podcast catchup night. http://sidepodcast.com/post/f1-debrief-its-not-really-the-same-team-at-all
Thanks, Pat.
Yes, other people will be on the tour tomorrow. I should ask them, huh?
oh, yes, I had time to listen today! Yay for debriefs. It was so nice to just sit and listen.
Gosh I'm still excited about the Williams news. They better keep the faux-Rothmans next year!
Give it a go... get dinner tips too :) It must be possible to get a meal for under a tenner.
Yeah, no kidding!
I think Nico Rosberg managed to level up at Goodwood...
I must get ready for tomorrow's big sightseeing tour.
Good night. (it's nice and cool in here now :) )
Night Kai!
Have fun, night
Time for sleep, nighty night guys.
Am having great fun editing. here's another shot from goodwood - http://loujohnson.tumblr.com/post/7242304014/another-photo-taken-at-goodwood-festival-of-speed
like!
i didn't see you plug this, but love it too: http://loujohnson.tumblr.com/post/7225075199/a-sneak-peak-at-my-pics-as-i-start-editing-those
Am pleased you like them :) i was a bit unsure when i was looking through them on the camera but as i was going through in lightroom it seems i've got more i like that i thought. Which is a nice positive sign. I felt it was the only thing that let me down this weekend when i left. Have an exciting blog post to write once i've edited these all too. Pretty big weekend for me really. :)
it's the perfect setting.
did you not do the motorsport palace thing this year?
no sadly not. I applied for accreditation but no luck. Was considering going anyway but sadly home plans got in the way.
ah-ha.
bad times :( BUT goodwood more than made up for it. Even tho i didn't get to see Jenson except for a flash past in the car and on the big TVs.. so that's saying something about my weekend :D
#rankings tomorrow and I nominate Rubens for taking requests!
tomorrow morning I will be at Williams....what would you like to see there?I will take pictures - @rubarrichello
