The Fryiest of all the week's days

Hello again, habitants of this lovely Sidepodworld we seem to have ended up on. How has your week been? Once again we have found ourselves coming towards the weekend and it's my goal today to send you out with that Friday feeling having plenty to share and going out on a high! Most importantly though for people in the UK, today is the day that Senna is finally out in the cinema's for all to see after all the acclaim and excitement it's received. So go and see it! Go! I;m watching you intently. *watches on* then come back and ready my Daily!

Paddock News

They seem to be Virgin on the edge of failure, for what it's Wirth - Late last night we found out the news that Wirth Research and their crazy CFD ways of making Formula 1 cars is no longer connected to the Marussia Virgin team. To be honest I've never been convinced by Nick Wirth and the whole CFD approach to making a car so maybe it's for the best for Virgin because they have been an almighty disappointment this year. I know it's only their second year but even HRT seem to have made progress. Chyeah, the team with the multi-million technology system losing to the team that struggled to even get in! Come on!!

I wish I was very much mistaken - If there's one thing I love about the history of Formula 1 it's hearing older races being commentated on by the utter legend that is Murray Walker and it seems on Sunday evening on BBC2 at 8pm there's going to be a program on looking at Murray's life in motorsport and the golden voice behind the mic. It's incredible that he's nearly 90 years old and still actively out and about with the sport he loves. Looking forward to this one.

Elsewhere

Fourty Love - Today sees the Semi Finals kick off of the French Open with two massive matches - Federer vs Djokovic and Nadal vs Murray. Just typing them out is exciting enough but I'm excited as hell to see how these play out, and as you can see in the link, Murray seems confident he can beat Nadal even on clay which should be interesting. I do hope he does though. Whilst keeping the tennis theme going, I just have to share this video that Christine posted earlier this week in the comments of Mansour Bahrami that absolutely blew me away. I know Amy and Lou are huge fans but now I've seen the footage it's totally understandable why, what an utter legend!

Life from the Reserve Driver Lane - Our favourite walking wikipedia man that is Karun Chandhok has written up his thoughts and feelings about the Monaco Grand Prix weekend and being there in the whole midsts of the brilliance that it is, with the overlaying point to his article being that drivers sign up for the sport knowing full well the risks which goes without saying. I do like hearing stuff from the drivers though so it's a nice little article from Karun.

Every New Song is a Waterfall of Awesome - If you're a big Coldplay fan you may be interested to know that at 11:30am GMT today the band will be debuting the first new song off their upcoming new album later in the year, with the song called Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. Maybe they have hayfever or watched the ending to Armageddon, that's a lot of tears. I'm very excited to hear this though, feels like it's been ages apart from the Christmas song that we've heard new Coldplay. Woohoo!!

Itty Bitty Links

And now for a few final things to make your day. I've mentioned GOG.com a few times before, an online source of good old games for download at very cheap prices, and yesterday they announced a deal to gradually start selling EA Games which is a HUGE deal for them and rightly so, there could be some good classic EA games coming over the next few months. Next up, if you're into any space related activities and especially the Endeavour landing that took place earlier this week make sure you check out this range of incredible photographs relating to the sad final landing of this legendary ship. Love that ring of atmosphere around the Earth in #27. What do we reckon about this initial sneak peak into Windows 8, people? Won't lie, I think I love the user interface. It's like the Xbox 360 dashboard had a baby with Windows Mobile, and it's a huge jump for a Windows OS to look as good as this personally. But we'll see, early days yet. I feel like having a proper geek out now. Bring on E3 next week and the unveiling of Project Cafe, Nintendo's supposed successor to the Wii!

And that's that for another week my friends. Have a brilliant Friday and enjoy the lovely summer weather!

    Hello

I just watched a great bit on the Daily Show. Jon Stewart went off about Donald Trump eating his pizza with a fork. Not suitable to link to here, but really funny if you have a google on your own.

Fair enough, but it's not like it's being more hyped than a regular movie - we just happen to be steeped in motorsport.

Remember this is on general release, so the aim is to pick up viewers that aren't necessarily F1 fans.

  • Nick03/06/2011 at 09:57

Fair enough, but it's not like it's being more hyped than a regular movie - we just happen to be steeped in motorsport.

This is the most overhyped movie i have ever seen. the people making it seem verry arrogant, with the most ridiculous release schedule.

How many reviews has this film had over the past 9 months? how many premieres and q&a's?

i think the whole thing is a joke just cashing in on senna.

    he deserved better than that.

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2011 at 10:00

This is the most overhyped movie i have ever seen. the people making it seem verry arrogant, with the most ridiculous release schedule.

More overhyped than the new Star Wars films. Realistically a lot of films in this situation go through these kinds of promotion - you just might not see it because they may not fall into a category that we are exposed to.

  • Nick03/06/2011 at 10:14

I disagree, i have followed several films releases. i have never seen one as ridiculous as this.

Star wars had a global release date, all the pr was done ahead of that, they didnt spend 9 months choosing different release dates for every country they could...

  • Nick03/06/2011 at 10:16

Even this will have a more sensible release schedule! http://sniffpetrol.com/2011/06/02/2986/

  • Journeyer03/06/2011 at 10:17

Star wars had a global release date, all the pr was done ahead of that, they didnt spend 9 months choosing different release dates for every country they could...

Senna didn't have a global release date because no one initially wanted to pick it up. It only got noticed at Sundance, only then did countries show interest to pick it up.

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2011 at 10:18

Star wars had a global release date, all the pr was done ahead of that, they didnt spend 9 months choosing different release dates for every country they could...

Star Wars was always going to be a massive global release - they had major distributors from the offing.

Senna started out independently and only got picked up by Universal later on. For a major of independent films, it is easier to stagger release dates in order to generate as much publicity as possible.

  • Nick03/06/2011 at 10:58

  • Journeyer03/06/2011 at 11:46

A quote (supposedly) from Max Mosley: “F1 would go to Bahrain over my dead body (...) a public relations disaster, sponsors will want their liveries removed.”

Regardless of whether or not it came from Max (which would reveal plenty of tension with his chosen successor Jean Todt), the bigger question is - can sponsors ask for their liveries to be removed from the cars specifically for Bahrain?

  • Christine03/06/2011 at 11:47

And indeed, it looks like it will replace the Indian GP's original slot, with India moving to December. Adam C also says there may have been pressure from India as well to agree to Bahrain's reinstatement.

That's tricky. I'm likely not to watch the Bahrain GP anyway, and I refuse to watch F1 in December. Two GPs down for me!

Yep. It'd be in contracts that they may not want to be involved in events of disrepute. I hope a team pulls out, but I doubt any of them have any balls

combine him with Henri Leconte and you've got the funniest match you've ever seen in your life.

My favourite thing I ever saw live was one time they were playing doubles and they passed up some money to a guy in the front row and got him to go get them beer from the lobby, then they all stopped for a drink in the middle of the match. The whole crowd was crying with laughter.

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2011 at 15:11

average Austin June max is 33 degrees, they do a lot worse in other races.

It's a lot hotter when IndyCar goes there in June - that's why they race there at night

  • Kai03/06/2011 at 15:12

Texas in June ranges from 35-42 degrees Celcius on average

I don't know what the Celsius is, but it's 82F average with 89% humidity.

    Should be fun.

Texas in June ranges from 35-42 degrees Celcius on average

42.2 is their record high, it's not like it happens every day.

Ahh, it's only 29C in Austin right now... no biggie. :) And an expected high of 37C by 4 PM today

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2011 at 15:12

I've a few friends based in the Fort Worth area that claim 35C plus in June is pretty regular

Agree, it can be HOT and humid in Austin, though Houston is worse.

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:13

True - they are separated by a bit of a distance

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:16

the only problem with back to back means I'll have to fit the rest of my tourism in either before or afterwards, 3 days between being in Montreal and Austin is clearly not enough to see other places I want to see :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2011 at 15:16

21 races though... that's just far, far too many

Indeed. As Mr C tweeted: /@mrschristine i think with 21 races next year we needs to scale back sidepodcast somewhat. stuff working that many weekends. #f1

The fans are the least of my worries though. This is just setting out to destroy the people in the sport, unless they end up with dual squads (like NASCAR)

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:18

Zombie crews or dual squads, because they teams have been on about not wanting dual squads

  • Journeyer03/06/2011 at 15:21

21 races though... that's just far, far too many

Turkey has an asterisk, though. I don't expect them to come back.

Bahrain and the 21-race calendar will really test FOTA's effectiveness now.

  • Journeyer03/06/2011 at 15:22

They haven't been on with returning to Bahrain either.

    Very true

they're odd looking things that go in our outside sensor lights, I am sick of not being able to see my keyhole when I get home at night and if I rely on my flatmates to do it it'll be 2016 before it gets done.

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2011 at 15:31

I picked up a couple of beautiful 1W LED bulbs for my porch light. They're so low power I feel no guilt with them, and they light up what I need perfectly. Fit in the regular bulb socket too.

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:32

    I see....

I'm so nice I'm even buying one for our back door. That hasn't worked in THREE years.

    :)

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:33

Lights tend to be some beneficial

I never use the back door but as soon as the front door one went I said 'ooh I'll get onto that' and my flatmate who uses the back door said 'can you pick me up one while you're there?' *sigh*

bulb sockets are annoying. When I was cleaning out the kitchen here I found not one not two but twelve screw top bulbs in a drawer. We have no screw top fittings. It's like someone who lived here prior to me forgot this every single time they went shopping for bulbs.

ooohh ouch. kinda want Novak to win, but also wouldn't mind Roger winning..

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:48

Have you figured out who you're cheering for, Amy?

Rogerrrrr. Even if I have money on Nole and I do like his streak, he's still only my #2 favourite :)

  • lou03/06/2011 at 15:48

also mum rang me to say she's checked my bank statements (always a bad sign) and i have no tickets to tennis for the olympics :(

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:48

plus if Roger met Rafa in a final at RG and beat him, I may never have to hear that his 2009 title "doesn't count" ever again. That'd be awesome.

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:49

also mum rang me to say she's checked my bank statements (always a bad sign) and i have no tickets to tennis for the olympics :(

I know 12 people who applied and I'm the only person I know who got them. I feel very lucky :(

If by some miracle there are some in our second chance ballot I'm going to buy any I see because I know so many people who missed out who'd like them.

its not a ballot its first in first served. Ours is on the 24th or the 28th of June but I'm not sure when your one is. There won't be any tennis in the UK one I don't think :(

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:55

"Surely that first Grand Slam win is not so far away on this evidence." says @ByronF1 re: Murray.

I think I've been hearing that at every Slam for the past 3 or 4 years.

  • Christine03/06/2011 at 15:57

I think I've been hearing that at every Slam for the past 3 or 4 years.

Ha, yes. Earlier the BBC people were saying that Murray just isn't good enough, and it's sometimes only a few points here or there, but that makes the difference in the late stages of a slam.

  • lou03/06/2011 at 15:58

Interesting reaction for the bahrain gp decsion, about 50/50 split on whether it strengthens the ruling royals with legitimacy or whether it boosts the crown prince and the reformists

I am slightly tempted to go and experience what happens. it will be a very strange weekend i think

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 15:59

ours will only have tennis if people who got allocated tickets decide not to buy them. I hope lots of people do this :D

it is the Olympics but its still Wimbledon and you Brits go crazy for Wimbledon in ways that confuse and scare me :D From the sounds of @Pearcesport almost everything was oversubscribed, all thats going to be left over in the second sale is early prelim rounds of team sports.

My main Brit tennis friend says getting Wimbledon tickets is a million times less stressful than the Olympics ballot so I'm sure you'll get there one day :)

I'd die without online banking, this morning I noticed the second payment for my Aus GP tickets had been taken so I emailed Pamela and 30 seconds later her half of the money was in my account, so I put it straight back onto my credit card. All of this while I was being paid to work :)

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 16:18

it works with me and Pamela because we bank with the same bank, when my flatmates transfer their rent into our flat account it takes about 3 days. Grr.

  • lou03/06/2011 at 16:22

You don't even live at home anymore, they should let you do what you want to do :)

I've been talking to pro-government Bahrainis on Keith's forum. Seeing as they're defending F1's return to the death, I've decided to try talking F1 with them. Let's see what they say...

hahaha i don't want one anyways. I've said if i do get into F1 one day i'll consider having a small camera/f1 car somewhere.

i still maintain the button is cute tho.

  • Pat W03/06/2011 at 17:07

I've been talking to pro-government Bahrainis on Keith's forum. Seeing as they're defending F1's return to the death, I've decided to try talking F1 with them. Let's see what they say...

To be frank I'm not really interested in what they have to say.

It seems one good way to shut them up is to ask them about F1. They haven't come back yet.

So many F1 fans on twitter who think they are experts on Bahrain politics, its making me quite annoyed/dismayed

I did my Uni dissertation on gulf politics, and even with 15,000 words behind me i don't know the answers to a lot of questions people are jumping out assumptions to answer with.

I guess its the old "Why worry about the facts when you can be angry"

Im not saying it was right or wrong for it to go ahead.

i think it should have been canceled in february. but the fia decided to get involved by postponing it.

Now they have consequenses to their decsion.

Im not entirely sure it will go ahead. it will either be a calm summer or it could flare up again and the race could be canceled

But they also have sponsors who'll want none of it. I don't imagine Vodafone or Petronas or Santander being too keen to go.

So if even your sponsors are divided, what do you do?

Lots of complaints around about texas in june too.

I wonder if Austin could become a season opener from 2013?

we have russia to fit in after that too

  • Dan Brunell03/06/2011 at 19:13

    Final point:

I don't know if it would be appropriate to draw parallels to the FIFA and Olympics scandal to the FIA, but I swear I've heard this sort of record before about countries from the Middle East getting a non-proportional amount of power within a international sporting body.

This might be the tip of the iceberg of another scandal. I hope not because Max-gate was bad enough.

  • Amy03/06/2011 at 19:13

Rog is 174-0 in matches where he has won first two sets. Starting to think today will make it 174-1.

I wonder if Austin could become a season opener from 2013?

Austin isn't THAT bad in June. It's in the 90's F (30's C) but it is also relatively low humility and always a breeze. If it was in Houston, that would be a different matter all together.

Hello all from my amazing new kindle :)

  • Steven Roy03/06/2011 at 19:59

    Evening all

Can't believe the Bahrain decision. I assume there is another agenda at play as this decision makes no sense.

I also can't believe they buried the world endurance championship under that. I have waited nearly 20 years for that news and they released it like that.

You have to feel sorry for the likes of McNish and Kristensen who would probably have half a dozen world titles each by now.

  • Steven Roy03/06/2011 at 19:59

Can you? In a sport where we have been to all sorts of violent oppressive places, have had dubious sponsorship deals, cheaters and now dictators sponsoring F1 teams, why it's so surprising?

I also can't believe they buried the world endurance championship under that. I have waited nearly 20 years for that news and they released it like that.

All came out of the same WMSC meeting, everything at that meeting will be buried now. Of course they ought to have decided it then shut up about it until Monday, the start of LM week.

  • Steven Roy03/06/2011 at 20:03

F1 has always dealt with undesirables but I can't think of a situation where it has put its people in a genuinely dangerous situation.

I wonder if Bernie and Todt will actually go there

  • Alison03/06/2011 at 20:03

Exactly. Put out the Bahrain news today then use the WEC news to try to bury that

  • Rubbergoat03/06/2011 at 20:04

F1 has always dealt with undesirables but I can't think of a situation where it has put its people in a genuinely dangerous situation.

That is true I suppose. It's a natural consequence of the deals Bernie has been doing the last few years.

  • Steven Roy03/06/2011 at 20:06

Absolutely. I would not be surprised if this has been announced so that the teams and their sponsors refuse to go. That way the FIA and Bernie can say they did everything they could to help the Bahraini regime

  • Steven Roy03/06/2011 at 20:07

Joe suggested something similar on his blog earlier. Clears FIA and Bernie, even the teams in a sense if they can say 'the sponsors don't want us to go'.

Then I wonder if there's an insurance risk particularly if gov't warnings come up again.

  • Nick03/06/2011 at 20:09

Not really, no more so than going to Hungary under the iron curtain

  • Steven Roy03/06/2011 at 20:13

Then I wonder if there's an insurance risk particularly if gov't warnings come up again.

Interesting. So everyone in F1 says yes and governments say that travelling there is a bad idea and then everyone says they can't put their people at risk against government advice.

Martin Brundle never went though - but is the reason people opposed to the race because of the personnel risk or the oppression?

What about sao paulo then, which had one of the highest murder rates in the world at one point in the 90s

You can make a case for many places but there is a difference between cime and potential political uprising.

I have been to Sao Paulo and there is evidence of heightened security etc I never felt threatened or concerned for a second. The factory I was visiting had 28 cctv cameras round its perimeter. It had a 12 foot wall with razor wire surrounding it and had a man with a rifle in a bullet-proof box above the main gate. That gate was only opened when 2 other armed guards were in position in the car park.

It sounds awful but it wasn't remotely concerning or scary.

I do not think going up from "Defaulter" to "Chief Defaulter" is not necessary a promotion but more likely a circumstance that the lock to the stockade you are stuck in is not rusted shut....

On the other hand, Mr. C will be an expect potato-peeler by the time we get around to unhinging the door....

It drives me nuts how people adjudicate sports. Personally, I think the steward room should be miked and an explanation of penalties should be given to the press after driver's press conference.

Then again, I also believe that football refs should be miked to. It would shut a lot of crybaby players up.

  • Dan Brunell03/06/2011 at 20:49

The 'no F1 fans in the US' thing is a total myth.

I won't get pious but I think the last 10 years has opened up the world's eye that there is fans in North America.

Once the decision has been reached there is no reason not to let people speak. Letting us see the process would be a good thing too

I wonder if the silence clause came after Derek Warwick said he wanted to black flag Schumacher bur all the other stewards were against that. I guess the trouble with ex-drivers is that they are harder to control

  • Dan Brunell03/06/2011 at 21:12

Once the decision has been reached there is no reason not to let people speak. Letting us see the process would be a good thing too

The one thing I love about American higher court decisions is that you get to read the arguments of the judges and why they ruled in a certain way.

I am not expecting a 200-page dissertation, but a statement by each steward would be nice. I think many drivers would welcome an explanation of what is right and wrong. It would also give a standing judgement that stewards in the future can base ruling on... and it would all be clear to the teams, drivers, and fans.

On Tuesday we have the launch of a Soyuz carrying 3 members of the ISS crew to replace the three who returned to Earth in the middle of the last shuttle mission.

We all know the sidepodcast community loves space and photography so how about the super slo mo videos of the shuttle launch and some still pics too. The video merged from 6 cameras looks very unnatural.

I am sure that is as true as everything else he said. How many people attend from abroad, and what would the average spend have to be to acheive that? If it was 100,000, they would need to spend 5000 each.

Not if they use some crazy small currency like Japanese/Korean Yen or Peruian Lira. The lowest note/bill you have is a 10,000 whatever....

Personally, I like the idea of a dollar coin that is worth an once of gold although.
