It is Thursday once more and after missing last week’s daily post due to illness I have returned to hopefully bring you an interesting post once more. Whilst we have no Formula One action this weekend the aftermath of the race in Turkey has left us with a number of news stories, the majority focusing on the Red Bull team.

That is it for this daily post, which I hope you have enjoyed. I hope you all have a good day and I shall see you in the comments.

If it helps, The Dr Who episode that week is the one with a certain Mr Corden in it.

    Jumping over to this thread..

I may have another car soon. My Stepdad bought a Vauxhall Astra (second hand) but he seems keen on getting another VW Polo, he's already got a battered old one he drives everywhere. Hardly touches the Astra.

So I might end up with that and I can ditch my Focus. I really love the Focus but mine has a high mileage and it keeps costing me money.

I was doing some reading about those new skype charges you mentioned earlier. It has me very confused. Is it just for iphone users? How would it apply to someone using a dongle for example?

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:10

It could be iPhone app only. That's where I first got wind of it

  • Alison03/06/2010 at 00:11

It could be iPhone app only. That's where I first got wind of it

Yeah I found some stuff about it in their forum. It's not very clear. It just keeps talking about skype-skype over 3G which presumably would include a dongle.

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:13

Has your 3 app been updated lately. Might wanna check

  • Alison03/06/2010 at 00:14

Oh it is just for iPhone and it's imposed by Skype which seems particularly unfair

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:15

    Probably at the networks' requests

  • Alison03/06/2010 at 00:15

I really have no idea, it's a contractual obligation for them to provide me with free skype calls though, I'm not concerned, just interested.

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:16

I really have no idea, it's a contractual obligation for them to provide me with free skype calls though, I'm not concerned, just interested.

    Things change.

Could be for new contracts only though, when it happens

  • Alison03/06/2010 at 00:18

    Probably at the networks' requests

Their representative on their forum says otherwise. I know that I can only use skype credit to call phones abroad not domestically and that's imposed by my carrier, it's not a huge issue though as rates to call the UK are really high.

It seems like a weird choice to me.

  • Amy03/06/2010 at 00:19

I spy Spa planning! This makes me very happy. And I am sure it will make Pamela happy too as she is keen to finalise how she is getting there, but surely not 13 people need a ride though, lots of people on the wiki say they are going by train. Lots of people have not updated their info on there though, *looks at Nick and Alison* ;)

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:20

It seems like a weird choice to me.

They obviously need a better revenue stream

If it's as or cheaper than international calling card, then I'm fine with it

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 00:21

Ahh Amy... did you see the McLaren tribute to Bruce?

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:22

, *looks at Nick and Alison* ;)

I think they are needing a wiki update :(

I kinda thought some people who say they are taking the train can be beaten into taking the road trip... :)

I presume it would be. I can't see how they could even try and make you keep a contract when they're imposing extra charges that contradict your original contract. I don't think they'd have a leg to stand on. My plan is shockingly cheap at any rate.

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 00:23

Amy: where are you staying Wednesday night before we leave for Spa?

I have a spare room free but a queue is forming ;)

  • Amy03/06/2010 at 00:25

No need to beat them if they won't fit though. At dinner the other night I said we need walkie talkies for inter car communication. I just want a chance to say "Roger". Haven't seen McLarens thing as they did it while I was asleep and haven't attempted to look at it on phone browser.

A minute of noise instead of a minute of silence. I thought that was really classy for a racing team. I haven't seen it publicised much.

  • Alison03/06/2010 at 00:27

    I fixed the wiki :(

  • Amy03/06/2010 at 00:27

Alex said it was fine with him and Kat to stay with then but that was way back in September last year when the plans were first floated so that may no longer suit him. I should find out when he wakes up :D

I probably have a few hours of voice time spare. Not sure if I can get the audio through the speakers but there's always speakerphone

There really needs to be a bottle of wine between the standard [whatever that's called] and a magnum

Maybe a Litre would be good

Hi guys (whoever is still around),

Re Spa - If there is a spare car seat, I'd love that!

Also, am in the process of booking a hotel in London for early in the week of 23rd Aug - any suggestions on location? I will be travelling around UK the week before but planning to head to London for a few days prior to Wed 25th Aug. Want to be central to London-ish as I will be doing touristy stuff, but if anyone has suggestions of areas, that would be great. Thanks!

Hi Pamela. I know absolutely nothing about London as it is hundreds of miles away. You may be better trying to discuss it with Alex or Bassano but they are both asleep right now

Hostels aren't really my thing, prefer hotels :D

Just after some advice on location. If I look for a hotel out of the city a bit, which direction should I be heading in? Don't want to end up somewhere too dodgy!

South is better if you do get a lift, depending onwho that may be. We'll be heading South East from London towards the coast. If you get the Eurostar, that goes from Paddington now which is pretty central

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 01:51

Pretty soon we're gonna have to nail down who's going with whom

I need to speak to Pat and/or update the wiki

    this looks amazing: http://pressdog.typepad.com/dogblog/2010/06/swift-lights-would-have-totally-rocked-your-world-at-indy.html

The lights are five times brighter than any fluorescent light you have ever seen and will give fans instant information on which cars are on the lead lap, position of the top five cars, fuel load, breaking and accelerating.

    on the actual bodywork!

the colours would work on endurance cars at night i guess. but it is exactly what we all called for when kers was announced.

It seems a bit fake to me. At the track the car will be past spectators too quickly for them to tell much. The fuel lights are only ever going to give a guide rather than be accurate. You will be able to tell who has pitted and who hasn't but not a lot more.

It may be worth trying but I am not sure

  • Bassano03/06/2010 at 02:37

I drove my white Triumph Stag during the F1 Drivers Parade with Jenson Button in (on) my car. I would be very much obliged if you could email me any photos of my white Stag (if you have any) with Jenson Button.

will need to scan my computer tonite to see if anything there. second time this happened to me. last year one Melbourne fireman asked me for picture of his firetruck for their firestation :-)

Australian TV is being fickle and showing Samantha Stosur's match live when normally all they show is a 1 hour highlights package at 2am a day late and only from the quarter finals on. Now that I know they actually can get live match rights they should do it all the time :(

Gotta share a quick funny story with you. I went for a run last night around the park near where I live, and I took a paper map in my pocket in case I got lost.

Well, short story is that I did anyway, so I started running with the map in hand and I ran past this guy walking his dog. He looked at me excitedly and asked "Are you running an Orienteering Race?"

Rather than try and explain to him what had just happened, it was just easier to say yes ;)

  • Christine03/06/2010 at 08:49

I think he was referring to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orienteering

Some people run these things - last time I did one was for a school fun day, but someone had nicked all of the flags :(

Yeah! It was during Home Economics (as it was still called) at school. We were told to make a small pizza with an original topping. So I made one with jam on 2 quarters (opposite, of course) and marshmallow fluff on the other two.

Unfortunately it melted in the oven so that half was just pastry. I was disappointed.

One of our suppliers is British Gas (not for long, haha). They have historically been terrible at everything related to contacting them but they've got a lot better lately, on the business side anyway. An invoice was missing, not a problem, I call them and they sent it by email within 30 minutes. Much improved service. Except.... they sent it as a Tiff. It is a scan of a printout, why does it need to be a Tiff??

Would it work with a deep pan crust? Then the melted marshmallow would be trapped on the pizza surface. Or even use the marshmallow to fill a deep pan crust, in the style of those cheesy crusts that it's possible to get with fancy takeaway pizzas...

  • Turkey Machine03/06/2010 at 11:08

It would have been pretty difficult for them not to have put me in a group with bullies, to be fair. There were only four groups and at least three-quarters of the year group were known to bully me at that point of my secondary school career (silly school for not doing something about them apart from the occasional symbolic lecture).

Later that trip, the trip organiser worked out that continually placing me in that sort of situation was pointless (other group activities with the same people were considerably less successful), cumulating in me and my ECO going off for one of the area's excellent local ice-creams on the final morning instead of trying to participate in yet another pointless group games/bullying session (delete as appropriate).

  • Lukeh03/06/2010 at 11:21

oooo how exciting! Where are you going?

I tried to reply on my phone but it is just so damn useless :(

I was going to a retail park to get a birthday present for probably my closest friend. He is lucky I have known him for 17 years as football shirts are quite extortionate prices!!

    Who's/What's McDreamy?

Ah sorry. Patrick Dempsey, who plays a Doctor on Grey's Anatomy, which is a TV show about relationships between a group of people who hang around a hospital and pretend to be doctors ;)

  • Lukeh03/06/2010 at 11:22

I'm getting a real craving for some KFC chicken. When I venture into the city to see the Classic Team Lotus promo soon, I definately need some. Then a gym session afterwards. :P

Greggs lunch for me, as ever. Om nom.

    Ah that came this week? Looking forward to reading that later then! {Comment #221}

It's in today's issue but only in the UK. So another reason I'm swotting up on it is in case some people want to know what was said about driver X or Y (there are at least two drivers, in two different cars, which two different sites may end up asking me about, and I'd rather be prepared than ignorant).

It should be noted he competed last year for 'Charidee' and did rather well. On the parade day he had a rather large troupe of bodyguards (think Red Bull on the grid) and teh crowd swooned when he went by...

That's why I've never heard of him! I can't see him on the list, but it looks like the Autosport list is at least one car out of date (it lists 75 cars and the entry recently got extended to 76 after some pit garage work was completed ahead of schedule).

I think it's been that long since I last saw them too actually... I went to see the Hurricanes a few times and the Lions though - as my old boss had a season ticket. He gave the tickets to me as he only wanted them to be first in line for the sevens tickets!

Huge library replacement *groan* I've learnt from my studies that huge libraries frequently mean lots of financial waste and neglect of the smaller branches. Please forgive my scepticism, though, because some huge libraries can buck the trend and I hope this is one.

In theory, there should be interim arrangements - you'll need to find out where your next-nearest library is because until the new library is open it should accept books borrowed from the demolished library (generally the stock is distributed between the authority branches, but the next-nearest library often gets more than the others if it has space on its shelves).

  • Amy03/06/2010 at 11:35

Oh, it's a joint service centre (or whatever your council calls them)! They were building one in my final weeks at the library about three miles away from where I was. Their version didn't have a registry office or adult education offices but did have a leisure centre and pool. They're quite trendy in suburban areas now and I'm not sure why.

The 2 Risi Competiziones and one of the AF Corses are candidates for victory (though there are three other cars - the #77 Felbermayr Porsche and the 2 Corvettes - which are also candidates) due to their driver line-ups. The second AF Corse has been a bit off the pace and the Hankook has been consistently midfield in the LMS of GT2.

The complication is that AF and Risi share drivers in the 'normal season' on their respective continents (Melo and.. thingy), so the car's pace in the LMS/ALMS may not relate to the pace at Le Mans.

GT2 might be the 'slow' class but it should be a lot of fun this year, might be the best class to watch for a race

Also, Red Bull want Vettel there FOR EVARRR (at least until 2015) as they want to extend his current contract from 2012 to 2015. Read into that what you will...

Also, Red Bull want Vettel there FOR EVARRR (at least until 2015) as they want to extend his current contract from 2012 to 2015. Read into that what you will...

Hmmm. That will have very interesting repercussions on the long-term plans of Ferrari and Mercedes (who have both targeted Vettel previously). This may affect Mercedes more, since they will need a viable post-Schumacher replacement. Ferrari can fall back by retaining Massa or getting Kubica.

Whatever happened to those rumors that Vettel already had a signed Merc contract for 2011 or 2012 in his pocket...?

That said... Hmmm. Assuming those spectacular rumors of a Schumacher-Brawn return to Ferrari are utterly false, Schumacher might decide that he wants Massa to replace him at Mercedes as well. Kubica is possible (especially if Ferrari decide to renew Massa), but I really think he will end up at Ferrari alongside Alonso sooner or later.

nintendo controllers don't have 640x360 screens built into their controllers though.

See my other reply. A coding challenge for you. And if you made it for the iPad.......

i'd rather apple did it. if i did it, i'd have to make the apps. that would be silly.

if apple did it, everyone could make the apps.

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 12:53

I'm hoping the fact that Melo and Bruno have performed about as well on both sides of the Atlantic this year means that on this occasion the two are comparable. I could be very wrong though.

Depends who is in the other team's car in their place.

  • Turkey Machine03/06/2010 at 12:54

if apple did it, everyone could make the apps.

Or if somebody else did it they could flog it to Nintendo for megabucks. ;)

Why would you want one? Surely you're looking at the big screen with the game on it

They had some idea when the PS3 came out that you could connect a PSP to it and use it for a rear view mirror while playing the F1 2006 game. Never heard anything about it after that though...

i can display stuff to you that no-one else can see. so in mario karts case, what ever your special weapon is. if it were an f1 game, your remaining kers boost.

anything that would be better kept to yourself basically. rather than shown on the big screen.

But they announced the 3GS there last year and OS4 has already been demoed... So...

  • Christine03/06/2010 at 13:09

    surely not?

On one of Leo's many shows he was saying that Apple seem to announce things at the developer conference whilst Google did not. The next day Google announced Google TV.

It might have been the Google show.

he's right, but developers want os4 for the iphone/ipad asap. i think sending out messages about televisions is the wrong thing to do.

we haven't seen all that os4 can do either.

They have already announced OS4 for the iPad in November... You think it's going to be earlier?

I think they will announce that you can start downloading the SDK now for sure though.

  • Alex Andronov03/06/2010 at 13:17

I have now checked the iTV announced at a "special press event" not WWDC

  • me03/06/2010 at 13:18

They have already announced OS4 for the iPad in November... You think it's going to be earlier?

no, but i think adding another device to list would on serve to confuse. you'd have:

    os4 iphone - now

    os4 ipad - later

    os4 tv - next year(?)

tv would be a whole other set of challenges re: user interface design and screen size, that i'm not convinced developers need right now. announcing a new platform later in the year, that developers could target next wwdc makes more sense to me.

  • Alex Andronov03/06/2010 at 13:20

    my prediction:

appletv will land a week after googletv is announced. it'll be a free firmware upgrade for existing users and and new boxes will still have a harddisk. cloud services will be supported, but it will make google's search idea seem tame. it'll sync with the ipad, so you can stream shows around your house, and an skd will be available summer 2011.

    what goes on?

I'm writing at the moment, yourself?

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2010 at 15:04

in work - may take it easy this evening

have a little writing to do myself

  • Amy03/06/2010 at 15:05

    Who's your money on?

    Stosurrrrrr

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 15:06

Stuart is going to Le Mans.

I wonder if at 24hr race is harder work for a journalist, or a massive jolly...

I wonder if he will be open to kidnap bribes. I have not had much luck so far.

    worth asking

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 15:06

    afternoon folks

    Hi

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2010 at 15:07

    hi mr Pat

have you seen the temperatures for Texas this Saturday?

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 15:07

I wonder if at 24hr race is harder work for a journalist, or a massive jolly...

The race isn't the hard bit, the whole week is the killer, the amount of press and media events that happen on the week before they've even got to the race, is quite astounding

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 15:10

    hi mr Pat

have you seen the temperatures for Texas this Saturday?

100F? They can't race 550km on an oval in that can they?

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 15:11

The race isn't the hard bit, the whole week is the killer, the amount of press and media events that happen on the week before they've even got to the race, is quite astounding

    That's true..

  • Leigh O'Gorman03/06/2010 at 15:12

100F? They can't race 550km on an oval in that can they?

Aye - between 100-103F; survival of the fittest.....

    :o

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 15:13

Aye - between 100-103F; survival of the fittest.....

    :o

I just googled 103F (the figure Pressdog gives), and it comes out at 39.4C. That is insane. I know they race into the night so it'll get cooler but that's ridiculous...

Everything would disappear though, make sure you back everything you need up. But yes, very easily. (Mine took so long because it was originally vista, and it had the wrong drivers due to vista's uselessness, then I had tow ait for that to work then upgrade to my windows 7 setup)

    But yes, easy really :P

  • me03/06/2010 at 19:49

presumably 5live were given theirs too. seeing as they never stopped plugging it or the app all of sunday.

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 19:51

  • lou03/06/2010 at 19:51

    oooh! jake will lose.

i'm going for Eddie last... Jake a close second to last :P

I want to see Crofty and Ant have a go though..seeing as they are both so competitive.

  • me03/06/2010 at 19:52

oh really? thats pretty bad actually

    i'd say ant repeated:

"i've just looked at the f1 timing app on the ipad, which we've just got hold of today, and you are correct"

    about 30 times?

  • RG03/06/2010 at 19:52

I want to see Crofty and Ant have a go though..seeing as they are both so competitive.

Based on Ant's F1 experience... Crofty easily.

  • lou03/06/2010 at 19:52

i think he should have been honest about it. but it doesn't surprise me.

he never said where he got it from though?..

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 19:52

So today I learnt that Apple gave Jake the iPad to use on the tv. What do we think about that?

Cuts down the BBC budget so no problem.. As it is the Beeb and not proper sponsorship he probably shouldn't be seen to 'promote' it but if he's just using it and showing things, that's fine.

  • Steven Roy03/06/2010 at 19:52

i'm going for Eddie last... Jake a close second to last :P

Eddie was a decent racing driver

  • me03/06/2010 at 19:54

    true.

it only cuts down the beebs budget if they needed one which they dont, if there was a dramatic change in the quality of hte program following its usage id say maybe it would be good but i havent noticed any change. If he's been given it for this purpose and theres an apple logo on your screen with an apple product for half the broadcast i think thats not acceptable really, Top Gear many years ago had to tape over the makers of their overalls during the challenge to build a caterham, so how come apple get free bbc advertising?

  • lou03/06/2010 at 19:55

Eddie was a decent racing driver

was being the key word.. he'd have to be able to see the screen over his stupidly large and bright frames.. and see past his hideously distracting shirt colours to stand a chance. am still thinking he'll be last :)

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 19:55

  • me03/06/2010 at 19:56

I was lazy.. I should say, the BBC pitlane team has Alpinestars branding IIRC? So that's no different. Whether it is right or wrong for a publically-funded body is the question...

i guess the point is, it wasn't taped, because apple would've explicitly refused to allow it in return for the loan.

so, if no tape = no ipad, is it a fair move?

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 20:05

that's kinda how it should be. at least with the bbc. either you're commercial or you're not.

but... everyone would know it was an ipad right?..

yeah but its a start atleast. This was all raised on Radio Le Mans yesterday and they pointed out that as a privately funded organisation they could quite legitimately sponsor their pitlane coverage calling it the Nissan 370z Pitlane or whatever its called, but as the BBC are funded by us they should be acommercial, not biased towards any company

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 20:06

so, if no tape = no ipad, is it a fair move?

I prefered him with a clip board to be honest!

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 20:07

but... everyone would know it was an ipad right?..

Yes. But in Ready Steady Cook everyone knows the tin of beans are Heinz even though it has a big black bit of tape over it.

Not that they have beans but you get my meaning..

  • Lukeh03/06/2010 at 20:07

I prefered him with a clip board to be honest!

I far prefer the ipad. Makes it easier for him reading scripts as well as getting tweets and questions and I don;t care if they advertise it for apple or whatever,

  • lou03/06/2010 at 20:07

but... everyone would know it was an ipad right?..

like it was obvious he used to use a blackberry for emails and things prior to the ipad.

i get why you'd not want to promote a certain brand of race overalls.. but everyone knows it's an ipad.. it's really obvious seeing as there isn't a rival product out there.

i understand what you guys mean about 5live but if you're going to use it on tv i don't see the point..

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 20:08

I far prefer the ipad. Makes it easier for him reading scripts as well as getting tweets and questions and I don;t care if they advertise it for apple or whatever,

It makes no difference to the coverage, it just means that now he dosen't hold a phone in his hand. The BBC shouldn't be biased towards one product, especially when its been given to them for that purpose.

  • me03/06/2010 at 20:08

i understand what you guys mean about 5live but if you're going to use it on tv i don't see the point..

i guess the company has a set of standards, and for whatever reason, jake isn't abiding by them.

presumably he has permission, but then why have rules in the first place?

  • me03/06/2010 at 20:09

It makes no difference to the coverage, it just means that now he dosen't hold a phone in his hand. The BBC shouldn't be biased towards one product, especially when its been given to them for that purpose.

you have to ask, couldn't the producer read out tweets in his ear? if so, what does it do for him?

  • Lukeh03/06/2010 at 20:09

It makes no difference to the coverage, it just means that now he dosen't hold a phone in his hand. The BBC shouldn't be biased towards one product, especially when its been given to them for that purpose.

I reckon it makes a difference, definitely made a difference in the forum but not so much in the show I suppose

  • lou03/06/2010 at 20:10

It makes no difference to the coverage, it just means that now he dosen't hold a phone in his hand. The BBC shouldn't be biased towards one product, especially when its been given to them for that purpose.

but they are always going to be biased towards one product.. he had a blackberry before the ipad.. surely that's bias too?.. and what about radio one? they are always chatting about their iphones. Top gear showed off their iphones at one point too. This is by no means a new thing from the bbc..

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 20:11

I think the difference is just using it, compared to being given it to use to publicise

  • Jon Waldock03/06/2010 at 20:12

I reckon it makes a difference, definitely made a difference in the forum but not so much in the show I suppose

They he can have it in the forum but not in the show avec duct tape :D

  • me03/06/2010 at 20:12

the bbc gave twitter something like £1m worth of advertising for free. and they're still doing it.

    madness.

  • lou03/06/2010 at 20:13

I think the difference is just using it, compared to being given it to use to publicise

but even if they had bought it and not been given it i'm assuming they wouldn't have put tape on it. just like they don't put tape on mac books if they are shown in other programmes.

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 20:13

It isn't new, they do it for all sorts of stuff. I've seen quite a bit of fuss over it from time to time.

  • Pat W03/06/2010 at 20:13

the bbc gave twitter something like £1m worth of advertising for free. and they're still doing it.

For a while their 'tech blog' was practically devoted to it!

Tivoli, where they promised to meet the drivers and see the cars. I saw a Road Corvette mocked up like Jan's car, a Porsche GT3 Race Car, and old Lotus Sports car, a Shelby Cobra and a D-Type... but it was just cars, no drivers or anything...

You have such civilised conversations. I'm very jealous.

I don't have the ability to keep going. I end up making a fool of myself before it's too late and by then I give in. We had a discussion on Monday where I made a total fool of myself only to have Lou and leigh staring at me in utter confusement at what I was saying. Silly times.

I thought it was very good indeed. Nice work, Jon. I was thinking how it would've been easy to step in and finish his sentences to move things on due to impatience or something, but you let the subject do the talking in his own words.

  • Steven Roy03/06/2010 at 22:40

    Very quiet but awesome

I didn't notice you doing that. THey actually teach you to do that in sales training to get people to speak more. So it is a good thing to do in an interview. It's a technique called active listening. Worth doing a quick read up on things like that if you are going to do potentially awkward interviews.
