The end of the first month of the new year is upon us and we will rapidly be heading into February. Supposedly, Honda's deadline is today, but they've been playing that down all week, so let's see what else is going on:

  • A great debate kicked off in the comments over the penalties applied to motorsport. Should race results be adjusted after the fact if a team or driver is deemed to be illegal? Have your say, if you haven't already.
  • It appears that Mike Gascoyne has taken to the courts to try and squeeze some money out of Force India for the remaining year of his torn up contract. Surely there would have been some get out clause in there somewhere, or will Vijay simply end up paying out?
  • Lou has created another Spot the Difference game. There seems to be a little confusion over how many exact answers there are, but if you get anywhere from ten upwards, you're doing pretty well.
  • It was Sidepodcast Diaries day yesterday, and this week's video is all about Ron's admission that he will be turning up to races. Not really a surprise, but why didn't he just admit that in the first place?

It's a glorious Saturday, so please let us know what you are doing over the weekend, especially if it's anything exciting. If it's not, I still want to know, because I'm nosy like that. Get chatting in the comments, and I'll see you there.

just found a cool feature on the doohickey. wasn't intentional, but it works quite well, and may need some expansion.

if you have the realtime page open and have to go out somewhere, put your computer to sleep with the browser window still open.

upon returning, wake the computer up again and as soon as doohickey finds an internet connection it will proceed to download all of the comments you've missed, in the correct order.

the trick is not to reload the page, just let it do it's thing. also if you shut your machine down, it'll close the browser window so this works best if you have a laptop and just close the lid.

hopefully that makes sense, do let us know if its useful at all.

There may well have been a clause in Mr Gascoyne's contract. But if there wasn't, then I can see this case getting messy and financially painful.

Ron probably didn't admit he was going to all the races because he wanted to know if any of us would figure it out first.

To reply to the Soundbytes (since I'm not on identi.ca), not only are Force India press release happy at the moment, but they've got a presence on Twitter as well. They seem to be very serious about this Web 2.0 stuff...

Sounds quite strange. Given the way information moves on the internet, surely taking down content that's been put up has a diminishingly small effect the longer it's left? And if it's not clear what was up that shouldn't have been, how many sites are going to find themselves with broken links?

  • me31/01/2009 at 01:43

As for what I'm doing this weekend:

    - doing some job applications

    - putting some products into the shop I've just opened (warning: shop currently contains nothing to purchase whatsoever)

    - visiting Grandma at least once

    - swimming

    - lots of reading and playing on the computer (probably, knowing what I'm like)

As for what I’m doing this weekend:

I'm still playing GPM2, and after heartbreak in Canada when engine failure ruined a podium, I dropped di Resta in favour of (yes, wait for it) Danica Patrick, and it worked, we are now on 8 points, Wilson with 3 and Patrick on her debut got 4th posistion.

All I hear in the first 3-4 seconds of “Freak Like me” is a sort of lub-lub-lub-dub, rising in pitch. I didn’t even realise it was meant to be words…

I think there is some mass confusion here.

Mr C was playing the YouTube video to try and locate the words that Stuart quoted. As he was playing it, I said (much to his disgust) - "Is that the Sugababes?"

I had recognised the riff that the Sugababes sampled, and, as usual, haven't heard of Are Friends Electric.

It's not that I thought the words were in the Sugababes song, it's just that my limited knowledge of music has come to the fore again.

  • me31/01/2009 at 14:43

I think there is some mass confusion here.

Contributing to this confusion is the fact that I've never heard "Are Friends Electric?" and merely read the lyrics after typing the phrase "And the paint’s peeling off of my walls" into a lyrics search engine. I had heard "Freak Like Me", but never associated the lyrics (or the associated tune) with the song...

Mateschitz says that there's no hurry to sell Toro Rosso and:

"If there is a potential buyer, he has to guarantee to keep STR alive and have the knowledge and funding to do this."

That is good to hear, although it seems so unusual in this day and age to have someone selling without desperately going under at the same time!

fyi: had some reports google has been suggesting we’re harmful. looks like it’s a problem their end:

Aye, had that problem when trying to find my old site. Thinking, I've created this damn site, so I think I know if its harmful or not.

    My objectives for the weekend:

My flatmate is moving out and I am helping.

The good thing: She is only moving 3 houses further down the street

The bad thing: We have to do everything by foot and is -20 degree Celsius outside

    objectives for tomorrow:

    get warm again.

You’re not near the old racetrack perchance?

The final layout of the circuit still exists apart from a short stretch at the top, at the foot of the steps from the site of the palace.

About seven years ago the council tidied the whole park up and narrowed the width of the extant track by the concert bowl, so you could barely fit one car through it nowadays although they do hold bicycle races there. They also gave the dinosaur area a facelift because it was getting quite tatty.

I think there is some mass confusion here.

I once had to lie at Gary Numan's feet (holding a microphone) for an hour and a half while he recorded an interview. But silly me had forgotten to bring my gatefold LP of I, Assassin for him to autograph!

  • Bassano Clapper31/01/2009 at 17:04

Apparently Ferrari devised and tested a KERS system located in the nose of the car to provide better weight distribution but were put off by things like high voltage cables running through the cockpit

Vinyl had that quality of ownership and care involving smell & tactile senses that CDs and MP3s never had. I have quite a few limited 7" & 12" singles

As much as technology has improved quality in music it has detracted in some of the 'feel' of what we listen to

  • Scott Woodwiss31/01/2009 at 18:36

I'm starting a new game with Minardi and this time instead of skipping watching the qualifying and races, I'm going to watch them so I can be a proper team manager and make active changes like bringing my guys in for tyres when the weather changes, etc. :P Australia 1998 here I come, with Shinji and Esteban in tow!

I still have a vast quantity of vinyl. Still converting a lot to 24bit FLAC.

Mostly it's 1920-1930's blues - some beautiful stuff there - sadly the vinyl is very fragile - so it's a difficult job to look after.

  • R.G (Drives like Sato, Thinks like Sato, Might as well be Sato)31/01/2009 at 18:41

Hope you do better than me Scotty, considering the money on my game just kept going down, and down, and down. Till we ended up like Honda and bankrupt at the end of the second season. And we ended up winning a race with Danica Patrick. Shouldn't have dropped Justin Wilson I knew it.

Scott, do you watch the whole race on GPM? Whenever I do, my drivers never finish. They always retire, either by crashing, spinning or some other problem. Any idea what's up with that?

Scott, do you watch the whole race on GPM? Whenever I do, my drivers never finish. They always retire, either by crashing, spinning or some other problem. Any idea what’s up with that?

I think it's just being clever. Don't have your drivers push hard in the race, especially in the smaller and slower teams.

On a sad note, a strategy mix up has seen Shinji run out of fuel! D'oh! Still, I managed to get Tuero back in to fuel up despite having to trundle round on virtually no fuel for a lap.

  • Joe31/01/2009 at 20:14

I might play that game if drivers didn't always always always retire when I watch the race. When I skip it, they finish.

Question on the Sidepodcast last,fm group. Will newcomers to the group have their charts added to the group once it updates tomorrow evening?

  • Andy Taylor31/01/2009 at 20:18

Are the records made of wax? There’s a tv show over here and the host is a music historian and he had a guest on a while back who brought in wax records from that era and only he handled them and he was extremely careful about putting them on the turntable.

Records from the 30s would be 78rpm and made from shellac which is rather prone to shattering.

The Long Player or LP (33 and 1/3 rpm) was introduced in the late 1940s as was the competing 45rpm standard which became used for single releases. These discs are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) - hence the name "vinyl".

LPs had the advantage of being able to contain more than a few minutes of recording on each surface - listening to a 78 recording of a symphony would require many discs and disc changes, on an LP you would be able to fit the whole piece on one disc. The word "album" comes from the 78 era when discs would be kept in photo album style books.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)31/01/2009 at 20:19

So, Australia is done. Tuero ended the race 14th, Shinji was classified 16th and we've made a $100,000 profit. Onto preparations for Brazil.

Scott, do you have Grand Prix World? Also, any plans for later tonight? : P

Yes, I'm playing GPW right now, and maybe not, trying to cut down on XBOX lol :)

Speaking of GPW, my guys qualified 11th and 12th because they got hot laps in before the rain spoiled everyone else.

Currently tipping it down, and they're benefitting from retirements left right and centre and running 12th and 13th after an awkward first lap.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)31/01/2009 at 21:06

at risk of sounding dim… who is Joe Satriani?

    I feel too young now.

OK... back in 1996 the first official Playstation F1 game came out. Now you must remember this is back when even 3D graphics in a racing game were new... We did have an excellent game called F1 Grand Prix but as you can see, it was very basic (and we had to fill in all the names ourselves...)

So to be presented with this intro and then Joe Satriani as menu music - well, it was a massive step forward and it just blew us all away. 3D graphics, excellent detail, Murray Walker for the first time in a game and fantastic gameplay.

Quite simply one of the best ever games when it was released and it really set the standard for future games of any genre I must have wasted so much time on that game and I still think it holds it's own even today... :-)

I've tried one of them. Not worth the money I thought.

I ended up using my Linn Sondek LP12 and a homebuilt valve phono amp going into a my PC and recording at 24bit 96khz through a modified creative labs x-fi and using home made cables.

Always record 33 1/3rpm. That means I can then keep as much detail as possible when getting the track lengths correct at a higher rpm rates - also means that there's less stress on the records.

I generally then run a level across the sides to -6db at the loundest point and then convert to FLAC and then burn to DVD, drop a copy on the media server and then onto the backup server as well. I have been known to make a DVDAudio disk as well....

Andrea Moda. Their attempt at running an F1 team looked more like a load of monkeys trying to get it on with a football.

    In fact I have proof:

Are the records made of wax?

Records from the 30s would be 78rpm and made from shellac which is rather prone to shattering.

The Long Player or LP (33 and 1/3 rpm) was introduced in the late 1940s as was the competing 45rpm standard which became used for single releases. These discs are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) - hence the name “vinyl”.

Boy what was I thinking a small amount of wax was used as a lubricant.

I had one comment with a youtube link go to moderation and the following one disappear without trace so here is attempt number three.

Before discs recordings were made on wax cylinders.

Search for wax cylinder on youtube and you should get a vid of one playing.

A 12? Vinyl record in a sleeve that opens up like a book

I have erred. It was Dance, not I, Assassin that I had on gatefold. Pic to come at some point on Drop-your-wotsits.

I have the first two Blancmange albums on picture disc too.

you know she's not gonna know what one of them is either?

    Morning all,

Has it been revealed why there is no live show tonight? I read a GMM story that said that Bibendum approached Christine and threatened to reveal the identity of Mr. C if she didn't make Bibendum the number 1 Sidepodcuddly.

So Christine was forced to give in to these demands, which made Jia-Tou so mad she went on a rampage and smashed the recording studio before leaving to return to China... any truth in these rumours?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/02/2009 at 11:05

On a more serious note, Teddy Mayer has died. He's the guy that kept Mclaren going after Bruce Mclaren got killed - and helped Mclaren win their first two championships. He got ousted after a slump in form and then Marlboro brought in Ron Dennis... so an instrumental figure in the team :-(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)01/02/2009 at 11:14

Rising Kiwi Motorsport star Brendon Hartley talks to stuff.co.nz

He's the guy that finished third in British F3 this year and is in the Red Bull Driver development programme. An interesting interview - he speaks very well and it's interesting how well he has done. He's already been testing the Red Bull F1 car due to Mark Webber's bad luck - but hey, that's how these guys get their chances ;-)

  • me01/02/2009 at 12:08

    any truth in these rumours?

    ummm, no.

    Sidepodcuddly? I like that sidepodnoun.

And did Jia-Tou remember to apply for a passport before heading for China? Otherwise she would have had to return home anyway because border control wouldn't have let her in - not nice for her or anyone in her way...

A team which are heavily involved with KERS perhaps? I don't think they would go to BMW, which are the only team that like KERS anyway, so that meaning that they went to meet some F1 nutcases somewhere at a top secret location in Norfolk, who just so happend to be from the Williams fan club who sent the cog, apologising for cancelling it, then talking about all things F1. However, they say top secret and going to a fan club in a pub in Norfolk hardly sounds well, top secret. So they must have went to a famous driver conference, like Jackie Stewart and managed to get a 1 on 1 about KERS.

  • me01/02/2009 at 15:36
