So here we are, the last day of 2008. It's been a bumper year, packed full of highs and lows, and we've been making our way everything that occurred in our end of year series. The F1 news is slowly picking up though, and soon we will be diving head first into 2009.

  • With that in mind, it seems fitting that Heidfeld has spoken out about the new front wing. He believes there will be chaos in the first few races as the drivers get used to their car's new measurements. Australia normally has a high attrition rate anyway, so I can imagine that the guys that finish on the podium might be the only guys that finish.
  • Elsewhere, Bernie has proclaimed that Button is good enough to remain in Formula 1 and would rather he takes a year out of the sport to come back fighting, rather than flounder with the ex-Honda team. It always surprises me when Bernie has an opinion on something quite so random.
  • The Sidepodcast header poll will be closing at midnight on New Year's Day, so if you haven't already, make your way there and have a vote. The chosen header will appear until Sidepodcast 3.0 arrives, and at the moment it looks as though Mr Webber is in the lead.

That's all for today. If anyone is welcoming 2009 in style, then have a great and safe one. We'll be around as we always are, so stop by and say hi, and I'll see you in the comments.

I kind of agree. 2 seasons in F1 and he's getting that already. Way too soon methinks. What's next? A knighthood if he wins it again in 2009?

they've given one to all the winners last year. including every 'medaller'. it would have been mean not to give one to lewis and he is a british champion.

but he won the championship by ONE point!! and that was gifted to him. I mean, well done to the guy he put in some amazing drives this year, but he didn't exactly walk away with the championship did he? I think it's just a little too soon in his career to be giving him things like MBEs. Maybe that's just me.

  • me31/12/2008 at 01:06

not top belittle the award, but they do give 'em away like they're going out of fashion. check out that list:

  • Ollie31/12/2008 at 01:20

Just picking this up on various feeds, so my question may have been answered previously, but... has Damon Hill been awarded such a honour? If not, then why Lewis? Thus far, they've achieved similar with the exception that Hill has continued since his career ended to give back to British motor sport (which of course Lewis has not had the chance to yet, so fair is fair). I do not mean to take anything away from the guy, he did well, but as previously mentioned, MBEs are seemingly being given away at the moment.

  • Steven Roy31/12/2008 at 02:02

They gave them to every member of the England cricket team for beating Australia once in 30 years or something. A 50/50 match up and they handed out honours like Smarties.

  • Alenyaa31/12/2008 at 02:05

You can't see the factory from the road and unless you break in you won't get near it. The old factory was in an industrial estate with buildings either side of a normal road.

    Hamilton’s getting an MBE.

See over here we just put athletes on Wheaties boxes and just leave it at that.

So we need a minimum of 2 more to have enough to start the BATracer game but of course I’d like to see more. Here’s the link if you want to sign up

I'm in with Williams. Hopefully I will be more Mario Andretti than Michael Andretti.

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)31/12/2008 at 10:50

So to start, we need at least 2 more people to join Dank and Al at RBR and STR. But of course, I'd love to see a nice healthy grid of cars.

There is also something I can do as the game owner. I can control the upgrades to the cars, because each team can get upgrades for their chassis and engine. To make it fair and even, I am able to control the upgrades so I can make every car the same, or as close as possible.

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)31/12/2008 at 10:58

I've changed the overtaking chances from 1.00 to 1.75. Well, we always say we want more overtaking in F1 so I'm giving it to you :D

  • Dank31/12/2008 at 11:31

No HD F1 on BBC next year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/2008/12/plenty_to_look_forward_to_in_2.html#comment27

Hardly a big surprise but hey ho.

  • littlepurplegoth31/12/2008 at 12:15

Well - I'd agree with that, TBH. Its not a 'necessity' in terms of getting a good picture for broadcast... plus there could well be something in the contract that stops it for 'commercial' reasons anyway...

  • Alex Andronov31/12/2008 at 12:23

I dunno if they'll do it for 2009, but I think it was Odeon who were showing the races in HD in their theatres with Ben Edwards commentating. I want to go see that! :D

  • me31/12/2008 at 13:00

I mean… It would seem an awful lot of filming gear to own to do just that.

i heard way back that the cinema feed was just SD upscaled.

i think bernie invested in HD camera's trackside, but not all of them (esp in-car shots). when the director cuts between SD and HD it's noticeable enough to be annoying.

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)31/12/2008 at 13:38

Just wanted to comment on some of your characteristic choices :P

Me - Super Fit means you'll be able to run at the same pace for pretty much the whole race and also reduce your risk of making any driver errors, while Committed means you should be always fighting for points and will go faster when lower than your target position.

Christine - Consistent means if you've got a good setup, you'll be able to put in consistently good lap times and you'll also be able to increase your pace sliders with reduced risk of errors. Lucky is just that. In certain situations such as qualifying and collisions with other people you'll be able to escape with very little or no harm done at all :P

(Have to say, despite not really knowing what you're doing, I'm impressed with these logical trait choices!)

Dan B and Al - Probably the most popular combo on BAT. Lets you run fast and get to a spot on setup very quickly.

Lou - Another great combo. Lets you be fast and aggressive without risking too much having an accident.

Alenyaa - If it rains, you'll be the dark horse! Also, Spatial Awareness means you'll be able to put your race start slider to the max and it should increase your chances of overtaking too.

Steven - You've basically copied my combo, haven't you? :P

  • Alenyaa31/12/2008 at 13:54

Hey Scott. Thanks for the feedback on our choices!

Can you tell me if there is a deadline for practice?

And how will we know by when to complete our runs/qualiy etc once the game gets going?

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)31/12/2008 at 14:02

    Alenyaa: 31/12/2008 at 13:54

Hey Scott. Thanks for the feedback on our choices! Can you tell me if there is a deadline for practice? And how will we know by when to complete our runs/qualiy etc once the game gets going?

Basically the game advances every 24 hours so you get a full day to do your practice runs and sort out your qualifying strategy and then once that advances, another 24 hours to run the warmup and make your pit strategy for the race.

Once I start the game it's gives another 12 hours before the first session advances. I'll post here when the game will start and reminders for people to complete their practice/warmup and sort out their qually/race strategy.

You do also get e-mails through to tell you that the game has advanced. :)

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)31/12/2008 at 14:10

I'm happy right now! RLB IndyCar race at Nazareth has just been done, I started 5th, had to pit after a driver error on lap 11 but some VERY well timed safety cars, especially the last one, coupled with some awesome last stint driving meant I CAME 2ND! :D

  • Steven Roy31/12/2008 at 14:13

Steven - You’ve basically copied my combo, haven’t you?

I may have copied it but not deliberately. I just read the list and thought fast and reliable sounded a good combination. Presumably there is an advantage to team mates having the same set up.

  • lou31/12/2008 at 14:20

it's not all we do y'know... oh yeah, it is :(

  • lou31/12/2008 at 15:16

So anybody got any plans for this evening?

i did... but some where along the lines my plans were cancelled to make way for my parents plans, which have now been cancelled, so no plans for me this evening (first time in ages i will not be doing anything special on new years eve). So it will most probably be an evening in front of the laptop working on photography like most evenings.

  • Dank31/12/2008 at 15:26

I'll just be staying in, ordering a takeaway and watching whatever bilge is on the TV until midnight. I wouldn't call myself a big fan of New Year's Eve and try to avoid it where possible :-)

    Hamilton’s getting an MBE.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The MBE thingies are becoming farcical. If I save several people's lives I most likely will not be awarded one, however, if I can cycle around a track quickly I can get knighted.

I'll be fair, Hamilton deserves a knighthood more than Hoy.

    Pfft, cheeky

Hello Joe. Any good at this?

    Hey Selidor.

Pretty sure it would be okay if you would join, doesn't really matter who you go for, but I think go for who you support, but if they are full, go somewhere else.

  • lou31/12/2008 at 17:31

Selidor! Join my Red Bull team! We’ll rule BATracer/sink without a trace! :-D

You know i saw Red Bull at the top of the list and considered it, but plumped for Ferrari on the following basis:

1.Someone has to; just think of the tradition and heritage!

2.It seemed like a "safe" choice

3.A easily recognisable colour scheme - after not seeing Super Aguri livery for so long, I keep thinking Mr + Mrs Christine are Team Toyota...

And besides, 2 British drivers doesnt work commercially :P

Ps. My favourite team is Williams ;)

    OCR I think</blockquote

poor you, we did our course with OCR, and were the first with the new specification, we didn't like it much. Still last yeah in my physics paper there was a whole question devoted to forces and how they effect racing drivers :) Anyway, Good Luck to you R.G and anyone else who is taking exams soon :)

  • Selidor31/12/2008 at 19:44

    OCR I think

My school only used OCR for A-level Further Maths. I believe the exam results were always delayed with them too :P

we did our course with OCR, and were the first with the new specification

I was the last year of the old GCSE specification, and everytime we logged onto AQA online to get past papers, there were big red warnings about everything changing after the summer, which i always thought was slightly offputting!

Anyhow good luck to all ;)

  • R.G (The evil one, think Bernie Ecclestone, but smaller)31/12/2008 at 19:46

Just been following up my lunchtime post about honours.

I missed Jackie Stewart being a Knight as well as Stirling Moss. Not sure how I managed that, but I did...

The only other F1 Knight appears to be Frank Williams.

    Damon Hill is an OBE

    Lewis Hamilton is an MBE

    Murray Walker is an OBE

    Ron Dennis is a CBE

    Sid Watkins is an OBE

    David Richards is a CBE

    Nigel Mansell is an OBE

    John Surtees is an OBE

    Colin Chapman was a CBE

    Jim Clark was an OBE

I could probably find some more.

The thing to note here is that Lewis has got an MBE - the lowest level of honour.

  • me31/12/2008 at 21:44

I could probably find some more.

    that'll keep us going!

I've played this game a few times before. Had middling results, but apparently I was a good team-mate and also wrote interesting season comments (look out for them once the Australian race is over). For some reason, I did better account-sitting (I played largely in the days before that practise was restricted) than I did playing my own game...

However, I haven't played for about a year, so I may have forgotten a few things in the interim.

Plus he's also racing in Formula Trinity with Flowtech Racing. They're saying that if I don't make it back to F1 next season, he'll be my teammate at AGR next season. Looking at his work so far, I'm certainly looking forward to it if it turns out that way :D

I saw the comment Jacques left on your profile. He's quoted as saying:

"The most literate BAT racer on the circuit! Loads of enthusiasm, perserverance, F1 knowledge and analytical skills. Just a joy racing with her!"

You know, with a comment like that, you'd fit into RLB brilliantly. Plus we only have 2 female racers, so to have you join would be cool.

Meeting Christine and 'Me' was great, as was the 12 days of f1 christmas ;) but honestly i think the moment i saw the live commenting thread i suggested back in March for FP1 in Aus was my fav moment. i was still relatively new to the site and for a suggestion to be done/ taken on board so quickly was amazing and made me pretty happy :).     You know, with a comment like that, you’d fit into RLB brilliantly. {Scott Woodwiss - 22 comments ago}

If BATRacer works for a whole season this time, and it's as much fun as I remember, then I would seriously consider joining RLB. I did hear a small amount about it right at the end of my last stint playing BATRacer, but the game wasn't working well enough for me to explore the option at the time.

sort of how we interpreted it. we've been wrong before though :)

  • Alianora La Canta01/01/2009 at 14:35

    What was wrong with the game? {Scott Woodwiss}

I would log in and either straight away or within two screens (any two screens), BATRacer would stop loading. Completely. There was no way round it, meaning that on a couple of occasions I had to ask to be sacked in order not to inconvenience my teams too much with enforced AWOL-ness :( . It seemed to only happen halfway through seasons - it was never at the start of a season, and if I got past the two-thirds mark in a season there was never a problem. But if one game fell foul of the non-loading problem, all the ones I was playing at the time would, irrespective of status. I found technical support virtually inaccessible.

Frustrating. Hopefully, BATRacer will have fixed this problem by now.

  • Alianora La Canta01/01/2009 at 14:38

    Oh, do you mean as in completing a full season instead of just doing mid-season games? Yeah everything should be fine. {Scott Woodwiss - many comments ago}

I meant the problem always occurred in the middle third of a season. If it happened, all the games being played at a time (private, whole season or mid-season) were affected.

  • Alianora La Canta01/01/2009 at 14:39

    Something completely random here. I’m listening to 4 minutes by Madonna and JT because that’s what’s left, but the song’s only 3 minutes. {Scott Woodwiss}

I thought that was strange too. Especially as the timer in the video has no apparent connection to the amount of song elapsed or remaining. If you believe the timer, a second takes about half a second to elapse except when the camera is looking at it.

    Any moment now there will be speculation that spc is indeed the mysterious power source at the heart of the tardis… (you know, since gallifrey went boom and isn’t there as a power source anymore etc etc etc) {littlepurplegoth}

Presumably it must be powered by the strength of the Doctor Who universe writers' collective imaginations, which would explain why Russell T Davies had to leave his post despite his work being so brilliant.

Health and Safety regulations, don't you just love them?
