With Honda Racing seemingly back in the Classified Ads, the news has died down again somewhat, but that doesn't stop us in the comments. In Sidepodcast Towers, we've been working on some of the 2008 In... series, and forward planning for 2009. I know, us and forward planning, who would have thought? Anyway, here are some of the things happening outside of the Towers:

  • Apparently, a parade that was due to be held in Woking in Hamilton's honour has had to be cancelled. The Council weren't prepared to fund the security bill, which they estimated would be over £100,000. Having seen the crowds at Goodwood for Lewis before he won the championship, I can only imagine what they would be like now.
  • With news trickling out about Rome's desire to hold a street race, Ollie has asked where readers would like to see a street race take place. Head on over to BlogF1 to comment, and then let us know what you said.
  • James Allen is trying to convince us that the Alonso to Ferrari story is true. I don't need that much convincing because with contracts all up in the air from the end of 2009 anyway, anything could happen. Alonso is usually the one holding up the driver's market, why should things be any different in 2010 / 2011?

There's also a fiendishly difficult game circulating in the comments. It seems to be very popular, but I couldn't work out level 1, and didn't have the inclination to try very hard. Let us know how you get on though, if you attempt it, and I'll see you in the comments.

    A street race.

Newcastle, though I doubt we'd call of the Fishmongers market on the quayside for that.

Or, want to see Nelson Piquet crash into Grey's Monument, or him crash off the Tyne bridge, there's a lot that could go wrong there.

Wouldn't mind watching F1 cars hurtle up Northumberland Street though.

  • Dank30/12/2008 at 00:07

Why don't McLaren go halves on the £100k it would reportedly cost to let Lewis have his little parade? £50k is next to nothing for them (credit crunch of not) and I doubt the council would pass on the opportunity to bring in some tourism for the day either.

Montreal would be perfect. They already have everything pretty well ready to go, and as it is out in a public park on an island in on a river in the middle of the city, you are not really cutting off traffic flow in the city and it is very easy to get in and out of the race track.

It even has these cool things called "Red Lights" that can even humble Lewis Hamilton....

    1) Yes, Nissan have been to Le Mans on numerous occasions, the last being 1999 when they ran two LMP prototypes (called the R391), although only one car started after Eric Van de Poele suffered a jammed throttle and crashed heavily. A Nissan holds the official Le Mans lap record when Mark Blundell of all people put his R90CK on pole for the 1990 race.

    2) Admittingly, Nissan have been like every other Japanese manufacturer, with the big exception of Mazda who did win the race in 1991, to enter Le Mans - good effort, but just not quite good enough. Reliability and consistency issues seem to have been the problems in their 24 hour attempts, but I would say their best race was 1998 when they managed to get 2 of their 3 R390s home well. They have race a Skyline/GT-R before though, in the GT1 class in 1994 or 1995, I can't remember which.

    3) No idea. Saw the story on today's Fast Lane Daily on YouTube so you're guess is as good as mine. I'm thinking they might go with their works drivers from the Super GT series, where the GTR also competes, although in more of a silhouette form.

More tight and twisty than Newcastle, but this focuses on remaining close to the Thames and even goes near Buckinham Palace.

I hope the Queen likes Formula 1

  • Ollie30/12/2008 at 00:55

Newcastle (I love the layout, RG. I might add it to my Google Circuits project (download link) when I get time) and Montreal (we all know it's a great street circuit). Very good suggestions. The post on BF1 will be followed by a little Googley-Earth-Goodness from my good myself in a couple of days. I'll shoot a link when I post (it may have to be manually inserted given BF1's eccentric behaviour regarding such things). :)

    Newcastle. I genuinely think that's brilliant. :)

    Brilliant idea R.G :)

Cheers Lou. Tried to make this one similar to what everyone knows what London is like, which mainly revolved around the Thames, but I quite like it. The Tower Bridge is possibly my fave part of the track.

  • Dan Brunell30/12/2008 at 01:03

I would love to see a F1 race in the streets in Seattle. I wouldn't use the same route as Grand Tourismo though. To bad I have a better chance dating a Eva Green than seeing that happening.

Anyhow, I gave it a shot with quickmaps. Sorry if it seems a little bit Tilke-ish with the long straights and slow corners. However, there is a couple hundred feet worth of elevation, especially from "Needle" to the "Edwards Hairpin." Think the drop in Bullitt but over a half mile.

Which prompted me to check http://londonf1.com. Alas, it's finally expired. For those too young to know, there was a genuine case put forward for a London GP in the late-'90s/early-'00s, which resulted in many layouts and much debate. Needless to say, it didn't happen. :(

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)30/12/2008 at 01:06

James Allen is trying to convince us that the Alonso to Ferrari story is true.

That's an interesting topic, I belive it's true as well. Flavio is leaving in 2 years' time so ALO might want some kind of Italian F1 "Mafia" family spirit & where else to feel it other than at Maranello? Pizza, Enzo clones, good wine, he lives in Switzerland so it's gonna be close the the factory. Although he famously said at the end of 2006 Brazilian GP that he would not drive an F1 car if it's painted red but it's rubbish now. People do change, the guy wanted to leave Renault as early as 2004 but I think it's some kind of mysterious mutual "profit" (can't find a decent word) that keeps the relation going... but not for long, aye?

Also the journalists need to fill the void created by this whole Christmas situation... I mean every F1 fan knows that grandprix.com reported it as early as May. He mentioned 2009 I think so the date just moved in the recent story, that's all.

  • me30/12/2008 at 01:22

People do change, the guy wanted to leave Renault as early as 2004 but I think it’s some kind of mysterious mutual “profit” (can’t find a decent word) that keeps the relation going… but not for long, aye?

profit is exactly the right word du bol.

  • Alianora La Canta30/12/2008 at 01:25

This is silly. I've figured out what the answer to 8 is to Zahada - but I have no idea what the question was because I was trying to solve 6 at the time...

This is the second time I've accidentally jumped level. Something tells me that I don't think the way whoever wrote this puzzle does. Fun though.

  • R.G (The evil one, think Bernie Ecclestone, but smaller)30/12/2008 at 01:34

I'll be honest, New York is an awful place for a street race.

Unless you want a NASCAR street race of course

  • Ollie30/12/2008 at 01:34

Flavio is leaving in 2 years

And this is an important point. Flavio always said he would stay as long as Alonso did. Despite his defection to Woking for a year. The dates are very coincidental.

Although I still think Allen's article screams 'look at me with my friend at GDS'. Good for Allen, but not great blogging (if I may speak slightly out of turn).

  • Le Wombat du BOL30/12/2008 at 01:34

profit is exactly the right word du bol

Could be, it's a bit like Lauda and Ferrari or Lauda and McLaren.

I hope Webber header wins. Although you could alternatively use Bernie's method and represent fake F1 cars coloured like rainbow.

  • Le Wombat du BOL30/12/2008 at 01:37

You bet, I won't be allowed to ask questions in Algarve at RF1 presentation because I'm not F1-credited media but it's a question I'd really like to ask Flav.

Although I still think Allen’s article screams ‘look at me with my friend at GDS’. Good for Allen, but not great blogging (if I may speak slightly out of turn).

completely take you point there. however credit to allen for this nugget:

"The irony is that they would have hired Alonso in 2006 when they took Raikkonen were it not for the fact that Alonso had fallen out with Jean Todt after pulling out of an agreed testing contract in 2001, to sign for Renault."

"Todt said he would never drive for Ferrari, but Todt’s influence is now reduced at Ferrari and Montezemolo clearly felt that they had hired the wrong man when they took Raikkonen instead of Alonso in 2006."

i don't think i knew any of that before?

  • Ollie30/12/2008 at 01:43

I won’t be allowed to ask questions in Algarve at RF1 presentation because I’m not F1-credited media

If you are going to be there, in the same room as Flavio and the so-called accredited media... can't you just stand behind such a credited person, wait for a lull, ask the question, then crouch down quickly and hope you don't get spotted! :)

Given the Honda story, I'm reluctant to bother with this one too much until more people report it! But I notice it is another italian newspaper that is breaking the story. Good thing for all of us, my italian is getting better :)

Fortunately, the newspaper in question today (or rather yesterday) has an english translation on their website

  • Scott in Italy (Christmas day is almost over here in Australia)30/12/2008 at 04:13

Not that interesting, but Bernie seems to be enjoying himself with his family at Christmas.

to me this article just looks like a rehash of news from the last two weeks with Coulthard's quotes, and also stuff about the Honda deal that appears to not be a honda deal. The article says Red Bull won't introduce the new car until February so that'll help Webber.

Does anyone wanna have a go at a private F1 2008 game on BATracer?. Yes, I know what you're going to say next - I have no idea how to play it. Fear not, I can provide some help. I'll write a short and sweet guide about the main things you need to know and do to play.

Besides, it's something F1 related and a game to keep up occupied until the start of next season.

  • Scott Woodwiss (hotlap master extraordinaire :P)30/12/2008 at 17:33

Plus you guys can be in the teams you support. So for example Lou can be in Honda, R.G can be in BMW, etc, etc. :P

  • Alenyaa30/12/2008 at 17:36

If I could choose one venue for a street race, it would be Rotterdam by night.

    And I'll show you why:

the problem with putting people's faces and brand names on goods is we have no legal right to do so and would probably get our backsides sued off the planet.

    No hints for level 20?

First hint: what is the statue in the picture? Do you recognize who it is?

From what culture does it originate?

That will tell you what sort of number to use.

Second hint: ignore the first two lines. Using the sort of number that originates in the culture that created the subject of that statue, what is thirty-two?

It's the fun part that counts. So what if you turn out to be hopeless, the main thing is to have fun and enjoy it, or at least try to. My guide should help as well for those who either have no idea how to do it or can play it but are quite bad at it. ;)

One thing about changing car setup for weather conditions. Without Kool Tools, it's really complicated and I'm the only one that has it. So unless you want to get KT which costs just under £10, and I would recommend it to make the gameplay easier, just do the runs in practice and warmup as usual and carry whatever setup you have into qualifying or the race depending on which session it is.

I'm in the process of setting up the game, and as game owner I can modify some aspects of the game. These are:

    Qualifying Accidents

    Start Problems

    Mayhem Starts

    Yellow Flags

    Mechanical Problems

    Driver Errors

    Pit Stop Problems

    Overtaking Chance

    Collisions

Anything you would like me to alter to make it more interesting? They're all set at default values of 1.00.

  • littlepurplegoth30/12/2008 at 20:39

the problem with putting people’s faces and brand names on goods is we have no legal right to do so and would probably get our backsides sued off the planet.

Or you could get somebody to do a *drawing* of people... there tend to be less issues with 'art'

Now - do you have a t-shirt supplier or would you like a referal to someone? :-D

  • me30/12/2008 at 20:42

Or you could get somebody to do a *drawing* of people… there tend to be less issues with ‘art’

if there are any volunteers, that'd be ace. i can't draw sadly.

From the Top Gear website -

"Jeremy, Richard and James will all be back in 2009 for more adventures, even if the global car industry isn't. Don't worry though, even a review of a bicycle can be exciting if you set it on fire and race it down the side of an active volcano...
