Hello once again, Friday has turned up and we’re looking at a lovely Indian Summer weekend to enjoy ahead. It’s a little bit odd writing this daily post as I’m not quite sure what to write. If you’re a fan of the Daily Posts and what they have offered over the years, it turns out that this will be the final Daily Thread as discussed yesterday. If the Dailies are going to end then they’re going to end in a triumphant hurrah! Now, onto today’s links.
In the world of Formula 1, there’s not been a huge amount of news apart from the odd bit here and there. Every Thursday Mark Webber posts an article up for the BBC and I always give it a read in work, it’s worth checking out his latest instalment as he talks about Singapore. It also seems that Bernie doesn't really care about FOTA which is no surprise, but also Christian Horner also seems quite neutral to FOTA too. I'm glad we heard from Christian because we never ever hear from him.
Elsewhere, Christine took some time yesterday to blog about the decision from the BBC to get rid of Doctor Who Confidential, behind the scenes shows that follow Doctor Who episodes when broadcast. It's not a huge surprise as they've become very irrelevant recently, although I enjoy how much Muse they use on there sometimes. I'm also incredibly excited that one of my favourite games of all time, Psychonauts, is now available on Mac! Such a surprise to see this announcement and sudden arrival. Mac owners deserve to play this piece of Tim Schafer genius! I also loved this brilliant little timewaster that Bassano shared for all the typography geeks out there - what better way to type than through llamas?!
If you’re going to do anything today then I very much recommend looking at the following link as, for today only, GOG.com are allowing you to download Broken Sword for free! One of the greatest point and click adventure games of all time, and yours for free. I can’t recommend it enough! Also this week I seem to have found myself watching a lot of the IT Crowd, so why not look at 10 of the geekiest references in the show? How many do you know? Finally, scoring from a header is a normal occurrence in football but not so much from 70 yards out...
And that’s it. It’s been an privilege to have been a part of the Daily Thread era, and I know I can say that on behalf of every single person who has written a Daily Thread, whether it was the once or whether it was regularly, that we loved every second of writing these for you. Whether it had links galore, whether it had genius drawings, or whether it was about Heikki, whatever the context of the author's Daily style, it's just been a pleasure. Sadly, all good things must come to an end.
To the Daily.

So long, and thanks for all the fish
♥
to the daily! cheers! :)
Nice send off Lukeh.
Glad you included the header from is own half as I had that noted for the next daily I would do.
So long, and thanks for all the fish
Excellent tag line, Lukeh. :)
as promised ages ago some fluffy (and some not so fluffy) pictures of lambs
https://picasaweb.google.com/102455622619748530369/Sheep
Beware of shocking picture quality, blood and excrements.
Aaaaand I didn't have time to edit them. Sorry.
Some of those lambs don't look like they are the same species as their mothers. Who knew black sheep could have white lambs?
To explain the pictures a bit:
All the sheep are kept in a big enclosure. Either inside or outside or both. You have to ckeck on them every ~20Min to see if any births are imminent.
Then you have to catch that sheep and put it in a birthing box
After all the lambs that are supposed to some have come, the sheep on this farm all got an ultrasound examination a few weeks ahead of the birth date to determin how many lambs they are carrying; green stripe on the mum means three lambs for example, they are put in a single box for 24h where the mum and the lamb can get to know each other. Then they are moved in a double box, after a ady or two in a box for 4 and shortly before they are allowed outside they come into a
I had no idea farming was so high tech now. Ultrasound before the birth sound like it makes organising things so much easier when you know which sheep have lots of lambs and which will have one.
Do many of the sheep have scary blue eyes like this one?
https://picasaweb.google.com/102455622619748530369/Sheep?pli=1#5657927585986759266
Sheep have brownish-yellow eyes if I remember correctly. But If you take a picture with flash you get the same phenomen as with cat eyes, they seem to glow.
I have seen them glow before when driving at night but I have never seen blue eyes like that before. I guess it is just how the camera interpreted something
I took most of these pictures with my mobile phone in quite dark conditions. I didn't want to take my camera into the sheep house after the incident with my netbook (and the bucket)
I don't think a sheep house is the ideal place for a good camera. Dropping a netbook in a bucket sounds expensive
I hope we can stay in touch, Kathi. Thanks for the lamb pictures. :)
See you out there on the interwebs.
Here's to the next meetups and international adventures we can have.
Good night and good luck, everyone. Love to you all.
I have sent another email to Air Asia to remind them I exist. As Jeremy says "we love them for giving us a free holiday but they are terrible at this stuff"
2 weeks til Free Practice and I still know nothing!
That is ridiculous
you're too much organized ;)
:D
Not possible!!
Just arrived by chance here, following Steven's video of Berger:
Rock in Rio Live: http://www.youtube.com/rockinrioeuvou?feature=ticker
Jamiroquai live right now (good music to chill out a bit)
I understand not everyone plans like I do but I expect 14 days to be well within anyones guidelines of 'acceptable'
especially since they know Jeremy still has to book flights from Sydney -> Melbourne -> Sydney
My student union are not very #mfc
A few of us had tickets to get in that were emailed to us as pdf and they needed a barcode scanning. They refused to scan it on my phone, they made me go print it out. Very rude!
I could tell you stories about the (gov.) institution I work for buying plane tickets and confirming permission to travel the night before (and even the same morning) of the trip...
Not me luckily (yet...)
Not #mfc at all
I'd age 40 years overnight! Stress!
Plain ridiculous. How did it being on paper help anyone? I really should be in bed now. I have like a test tomorrow :(
Nick is relaxed like this, me not so much.... He may have learned his lesson though. I waited like 2 weeks to book my Christmas flights and they almost doubled in price....
How can you have a test already?
thats only a lesson for him if he's paying for them :D
Well.... :D
It's a "what do you remember from school" test? Which at this point in my life is genuinely nothing.... Particularly not after the last week.
#sidepodspace
NASA has carried out a detailed survey of all the asteroids whizzing about near us. The good news is there are half as many as they thought. The bad news is that there are nearly 20,000 of them
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/WISE/news/wise20110929.html
That should make it easier. Just keep writing that you don't remember nuthin
as long as we have bruce, everything is OK... :)
I used to believe that but that was before we found out Einstein was a quack
#sidepodspace2
I just found out that the Chinese launched their baby space station today. I thought it was not due to launch till next week.

Rumours. That experiment have many places to hide systematic errors, it will be called into the right side of the line in a couple of years (or it will be confirmed, in any case it will be fun...)
A bit unfair to call it a rumour. It will be very interesting to see how it turns out. The particles only broke the speed limit by 2%
I was being sarcastic, it's an in-joke :)
It's an old rule: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"
What I'm saying is that there are still possible experimental errors not accounted for. It's not 'proved' yet, it's just a call from the authors saying something like 'This could be big, please help us to see if it is really true'.
But I agree in that IF it turns to be right, there will be very exciting times ahead...
It is very easy to get that level of error and not know about it.
I think the people who ran these experiments are absolutely convinced about their results but just don't want to be seen to saying so in case it turns out there are errors.
If they are right it will be interesting to see if there is a new limit or general agreement that there is no obvious limit
We have an old saying (by experience, it's true): "An experimental physics result is trusted by all, except by the one that made the measurement. A theoretical physics result is seen with scepticism by all, except by the one who made the calculation" ;)
I just like that the speed of light means lightning always warns me I'm about to have the crap scared out of me by thunder :D
Au reviour Daily post. I'll miss you.
Sidepod science and sidepod space are at an end too I guess. I'll miss them too.
But it's the lightnight that's the actual scary bit!
yes, but not knowing helps to keep the worry away, until the thunder wakes you up reality :-)
Au revoir indeed.
Wait! I had an idea.
VivaF1 has a chatroom! http://www.vivaf1.com/chat.php
Many of the SPC folks already have accounts here anyway, so it's a move we can easily make. Watcha think?
well, when I say here, I meant VivaF1. :)
You'd be more than welcome, only thing is we don't have any notification that lets you know when someone else is currently in chat maybe that's not a problem?
Yes me too, I didn't often comment of late but I usually read them every day. There were some really innovative posts amongst them, just amazing at how talented the community is and sad that we will be losing that.
I must admit I am a bit confused about what will be left and what is allowed as a comment since off-comment isn't desired, will it be totally F1 now?
We don't have that here, either, so that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, you guys even have a list of who's online beside the chat window, so it's more advanced in that respect. :)
Me too. That decision should not be taken likely as it may end up defining Sidepodcast...
The irony of today's post is that it will be full of comments that are in the wrong thread #sorryMrC
I'm excited about the bold new direction, bold new directions are cool. But i'm also keen to mark the end of the era though. So in that spirit, and the spirit of daily posts over the years help me mark #theendofanera with your saddest face
http://t.co/9bi1BzFC
But also, and much more importantly, your happiest positive face
http://t.co/KhsrykFg
Come on everyone. You may as well do it, Steven will only come along and volunteer you to do it eventually anyway :)
One rule you can post a happy picture without a sad picture, but no sad pictures without happy pictures please :) we are embracing the cutting edge fast moving pace of
f1Sidepodcast here :)did not see this one coming - Willis (not Bruce) and Costa joined Mercedes
so Willis back to his old Brackley job ...
Saw Costa coming, but not Willis. Geoff may help Ross in establishing positive behaviors at Brackley. I see Mercedes possible being more methodical and efficient in how they go about doing things. That's all good, but I think their bigger weakness right now is creativity in making faster cars.

Morning all
Ello Leigh. Do read my comments from earlier - had some ideas on what can replace our venue for Daily comments.
Hi Journeyer
Only had a brief glance (am in work), but signed into Viva - am not a fan of Facebook G+, but I don't really use them for social interaction
Saw it. ;) Replied there too. Jackie and I are planning to test-drive the idea later today, if there's enough people around. :)
anybody thinking about talking to some real people for a change tonight ? :-)
What? You mean like flesh and blood types?
yep, like those you meet when you go out for drink, or those you meet when you get back home :-)
main reason for me to drop the blog was exactly this ... too much contact with people I never met, too little with those I should spend more time with
I might be able to but Mother Goat and Daddy Goat are calling tonight...
Can these hangouts be done on an iPad?
Doesn't help me too much I'm afraid - I don't know anyone in London. Besides, I have too little cash to consider a social life a possibility
I do that all day already - at work. ;) And half the time, you talk to them on Facebook anyway.
#storyofthisgeneration
I'm the opposite really. I don't add people from work to FB or G+. After spending 9 hours of the day in an office with them, I certainly don't want to hear from or about them when they get home.
That's what the following morning is for.
I have an odd situation where half of my colleagues are only in the office for one day every three weeks - but as I am an expat I socialise with them a lot so I have added them,
I just learned I have enough miles with Singapore Airlines for a one way trip to Singapore. That makes going to the GP next year a bit more affordable without having to resort to a budget airline.
Ooooh. Good to hear. :)
Have you seen the SPC news?
of course.
Ah. Not sure if you already had, as I don't think you've said anything about it? Could be wrong, though. Anyway, shared an idea upthread worth trying. :)
I said everything I had to say back when the idea was first mooted :)
yes, but better book your flights now, only limited number of seats are reserved for the mileage "freebies"
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
You're talking to Amy, master of planning. I'd be surprised if booking hasn't crossed her mind yet. :D
I am torn because I probably really should use them for a free trip home since Singapore Air and Air NZ are both in the Star Alliance. But then I have to book over the phone rather than the internet which puts me off :D
I'd be lying if I said I hadn't gone to try but those dates aren't available for sale yet :D
Mrs. Goat does that too. It's the easiest way to get the cheap flights you want...
if you already know the dates you want and you have the money, why wait?
Although, I do not currently have the money :(
I remember trying to do the same for the first Singapore GP. Apparently, airlines normally post dates 10 months before the actual day. So flights for September 2012 become available in November 2011.
That said, where I am, that's not always the cheapest option. They may have seat sales where they slash prices by 50% or more. So if you buy early, you miss out on that.
It's always a gamble I suppose.
At one stage the flights I took to Singapore this year were selling for $11 less than I paid, that was not enough to get mad over :D
Thankfully flights to Singapore never change too much from here, every plane is full all the time since most people are just stopping over there.
Damn it, I missed out on the neutrino discussion. I barely ever understand what anyone is talking about, but here I would have been in my element(ry particle)!
Anyway, I'm 99% sure that the experiment results are incorrect. It was a mistake to publish them.
Both you and Guille. What makes you guys think so?
They may be incorrect but they may very well be correct. This would not be the first time in the history that someone proves or suggests a mistake in a theory created by someone else ... There was time before Newton, Mendel, Darwin, Einstein ... At the end, there is a reason why talk about theories, not facts ...
Well firstly, the speed of light as a relativistic speed limit for the universe has a mountain of experimental evidence behind it, while this finding only has one experiment that has yet to be replicated. It's kind of like that blurry video of Bigfoot. Zoologists have never seen any evidence for Bigfoot in centuries of exploring the fauna of the world, but someone turns up with a blurry video of a hairy mancreature and suddenly eveyone jumps on it like it's some amazing evidence.
The error margins are very hard to control - neutrinos are extremely difficult to detect, let alone measure. tens of thousands of them pass right through you every second and don't interact with you at all. They are so, so hard to work with, that it's overwhelmingly likely that there was a problem with the xperiment than the established theory.
So this could end up being just like cold fusion?
Woah, slow down! A Scientific theory isn't a "hypothesis" - it's the highest possible level a scienfitic body of work can attain. It refers to the huge body of verified understanding about an area of science. The Theory of Relativity/Evolution/etc is as concrete as you can get.
Proper scientific theories doesn't tend to be 'wrong' per se, but in constant need of refinement.. Newton was "wrong" overall, but he was "right" within the range he was able to work with. Einstein expanded on his theory to include high energy situations. Darwin was "wrong" but only because he didn't know about genes. Etc :)
In what way?
(I really hope cold fusion ends up working! I may be a bit naive about it, though, but I have all my fingers crossed)
I agree, but "the highest possible" applies to certain time in history. Someday someone may be able to go higher than the highest used to be :-) New findings do not have to necessarily negate the old ones ...
That they thought they had cracked it, but nobody could replicate it.
oh right - yeah, like that. Replication is the key!
Hi gang. I registered at VivaF1 but can't comment now, off to work. I wanted to tell you here now as I don't know if I'll be able to comment today before 7pm my time when the daily is done.
Thanks for the idea, Journeyer, and see you there and elsewhere! :)
Just when you thought that the WRC title was almost closed, two rounds later and the championship is wide, wide open... Loeb is out of Rally of France with engine failure:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94918
have an account too. like this idea, viva is one of the most underrated f1 sites out there.
* prepares to invade *
:o
Grandstand finish approaching me thinks
(Still believe Loeb will take it though)
Yeah, but at least it will go down to Britain....
It will be interesting if Loeb wins the title by the point he got in Australia... over Ogier ;)
Hehee...
Has Ogier signed for Ford yet?
Both are contracted until 2013, or Ogier's contract is done next year? I don't remember.
He may an option coming up though.
At least there is some excitement in the WRC ... even if it is intra-team.
In other news, Raikkonen crashed into the back of Solberg on the way to a stage and then crashed into a ditch!
Can you say, "mutually-agreed release"?
:D
Oh dear lord...
I'm sure Citroen will want to lose him though - there's a lot of intra-team politics going on between various levels of management within the team and company
I think Hirvonen is his main treat now, he will take the lead of the championship on Sunday (barring some disaster). Ogier will play Nr 2 the next two rallies
I just don't see Hirvonen as a threat to Loeb. He's like Massa - he had one chance and lost it. NOt sure about the team orders - Loeb had to play No 2 at a rally earlier this year too.
For anyone even vaguely interested in the 2011 IndyCar rulebook, I found it:
https://hardcards.indycar.com/Resources/pdfs/2011_IZOD_IndyCar_Series_Rule_Book_FINAL_%20UNFORMATTED_CLEAN.pdf
I base the idea about Hirvonen in that Ogier is not a threat at all, unless Loeb also crashes out of Spain. Loeb played Nr 2 earlier when both had chances, now is all on Loeb or nothing. Ogier is affectively the Nr 2 driver after Australia, I think there is not question about that.
If that translates into a good chance for Hirvonen, that's another matter. At least he has a chance he hadn't a month ago
Interesting. Am hearing the Delta Wing will be powered by a 1600cc engine (don't know the maker yet) and will have Michelin tyres.
I think it was orginally planned to have a 1600cc engine though?
No rules had been written for with regards to engine format until now. In fact, the original idea was that you could plonk any engine into it and go...
Narain will be driving FP1 at Suzuka this weekend
He was just talking on his mobile to Frank so was a tad distracted....
(Apparently Henning should have been behind Kimi on the road, Kimi thought Henning was pulling into a layby to let him pass but Henning brake tested him instead!...)
Where did you hear that?
From a friend...
Ah OK. We only have Mr. Solberg's side of the story from Autosport.
YAY! You like it! :D
i can't remember my login, may have to hassle mav for it later. but anything that means less work for us gets my support :)
And he was so sarky when Lewis did that to him in Canada
Didn't someone crash into Loeb between stages a few years ago?
W00t! OK Mikko (and Jari-Matti and Petter), don't Screw this up, my fantasy WRC team is depending on you!
We don't get details of your password but I could reset it to something for you, email you with a temp password and then you change it when you next log in?
Errrr...
There was a red light there....
My first and last "Daily" message.
I've enjoyed reading them even if I haven't commented.

Where are you going to go for the rest of the series?
I can't wait to see Audrey Harrison pull out because his partner is to tough for him
Naughty Step, NOW! 30 mins
For calling him Audrey. I have seen him fight and he fights like an Audrey
For knowing that much at all
It's a good program. You should watch
I should add I am not watching tonight so I have no idea what is happening
You can miss it while you are sitting down, deep in repentative thought
I have seen it several times but I really dont understand it.
Who are you and what have you done with Steven? You've chosen the wrong day to submit a ransom to the Daily
Never. When I first watched it was grudgingly and I really didn't expect to enjoy it but I do. Of course as Christine said in her post there is no Claudia this year and that is worrying
:D
Is Claudia the Kimi of Ballroom Dancing?
Nick, this is where it starts. It's a gateway reality show
Before you know it, you'll be hookeed on Swindon's Most Wanted whilst you think of the next reason to call in sick. Save yourself, run to the pub!!!!
She is more like the Jake. Except during the week. She is not on the main show but has a half hour show every week night doing interviews and stuff
I don't watch any other reality show. Not one of them
My experience of her would suggest she is Spyker, through and through
I dont really watch any of them. People talking about x-factor is enough to make me annoyed. the rest i am pretty happy to ignore.
Im supprised there hasnt been a motorsport reality show with a race every sunday evening to eliminate the slowest driver
I am watching and a British film, on location in South London paid for by a French production company. I think Bernie has a hand in this somewhere
I know of 2.
One I haven't seen in awhile, it was on Speed in the states. And there's currently (or will soon be) a GT Academy show on Speed: http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/19/speed-teases-reality-show-chronicling-nissan-playstation-gt-acad/
Ah, american reality tv is a whole other category!
Attack The Block. I drove home through these streets every day!
GT Academy on Channel 4
Is it good? I fancy watching it. Can't go wrong with a bit of Joe Cornish.
With Johnny Herbert as head judge. They took a bunch of online racers and eventually selected one to drive in a 24 hour race. He is now a professional driver
It would be interesting to try it with karters or formula ford level people keen to make there way up
Arly days, it's holding up well. Quite authentic contemporary yoof and ting, innit [so I'm told]
There was something with dc and Eddie (the other Eddie) a while ago
http://www.skyone.co.uk/programme/pgeoverview.aspx?pid=90
I am sure a lot of them would avoid something where they were measured against people competing for the same career. A lot of successful drivers have made it to F1 by avoiding anyone who could be real competition. It is even said Senna choose to spend a year in FF2000 because he didn't fancy going head to head with Tommy Byrne in F3 so it is not just average drivers who do this.
Though this isn't the quoted [East] 'Endz', it's Brixton as the nearby tube station proved. [tuts]
I totally forgot about that
Given how much it costs to race these days a big prize and ongoing interest & sponsorship could surely attact a lot of drivers
Interesting, I wonder if it will come back next year
I also didnt realise DC had worked for sky,
Let's see if Vijay's programme is serious or a PR exercise before his 'home' GP
PR exercise.
He's gone premium now and left the low cost mark behind. Haven't you heard?
I am sure you could get enough to do a show
I think joe was a little confused, kingfisher never really was a low cost carrier. it was a midmarket airline that was better & cheaper than the state carrier but cost more than the likes of Jet.
I hadnt even heard of the low cost subsidarry that has been shut down
Low cost is relative.
And?
I find it amazing how many people have signed up for Christine's google plus circle that I have never heard of. If you are out there guys why are you not commenting here?

It's podcast by words or a bunch of lurkers. A big bunch
I have always found it odd that people subscribed to sidepodcast on facebook but never commented here and now it is happening again. I really don't get it.
I think SOME of it is that some of us don't use our real names on here (like Bassano and Journeyer).
But I"m pretty sure I'd recognize Bassano's bald head as long as it's in his profile photo.
Safebook. Huff said. Or so they think
*Nuff
Well true, but I noticed flying back this summer that BA & kingfisher have a lot of codeshare flights now
I am sure that applies to a few. I know the real names of many of the regular commenters but I can't believe there are so many people that I don't know who comment here
Quite a few people added me on there that i dont know, i dont really like it that much. Its like the bits of twitter i like to be semi-anonymous with potentialy facebook levels of data about me
Yup, the deal's a year old at least. Vijay's been trying to break out of the little league for some time

Hi Andy.
Follw @QIpedia, they told us yesterday
Hey fella
and in a tribute to them.....
I've had a really bad day / work has been awful today / I'm going to scream.

(I really haven't had a bad day)

I am watching QI now and they just mentioned the awards
Night from me for the last time!
Hope we find a way to continue the conversation in future!
But If not, Cheers!
:)
I wimped out last night before 10 o'clock and still woke up later than planned. Not commenting is bad for you
G'night buddy. Must make sure we meet up soon, either here or there
Night Nick. I am sure we will
Not commenting is very bad for you. Are you listening lurkers. It's your life you re gambling with
I've just realised that this might end up the longest Daily comment thread ever as there won't be another one tomorrow to replace it. ;)
Hi gang
I only have a few minutes but couldnt let this pass by. I'm at whole foods eating before my meditation class.
I'm going to be raising many, MANY drinks to the daily post in a little over an hour. Leaving you all behind to go get in line for the largest beer festival in the world (Great American Beer Festival).
Later!
Sounds way to relaxing
Any of you out there who would like to come out of the shadows, who have never commented on the Daily Post, please do so now. We won't bite.
Looks like VivaF1 chatroom could be great. I signed up today. :)
When I did the quizzes, it was good fun.
Trouble is you only see comments posted while you are there. Once you leave they disappear
Others are on VivaF1 too
Love this from the IgNobel Awards
Not sure why that gets the peace prize
Daily posts could be revived, on G+.
Not viable
I know VivaF1 is not the same, but it's better than G+ to me at the moment.
Agreed. Sounds like they spirit has been lost

I have no idea. I am too relaxed to get out of my chair and go
I'm up early to head cross country to Carlisle tomorrow, so lots of love to you all, been fun in the daily with ya's.
Night RG. Hope you have decent day for your run
night RG, enjoy Carlisle
I meant cross country like, going on the A69 to get to Carlisle, its only a little Uni Open Day...
I thought you had volunteered for some hard running.
Enjoy your uni day then
Yes, we have a lot of fun. :)
Okay really going now.
I thought planes had better ergonomics. Who puts the button that opens the cockpit door next to one that practically turns the plane upside down?
http://uk.travel.yahoo.com/p-promo-3361661
And there we are. Thanks Daily Posts, you have served us well :(
Sounds like proper junior writer GMM to me
Not related but thought they'd add: "The airline’s pilots’ unions also threatened to go on strike over an unrelated matter, furthering the company’s problems"
Giving Internet reporting a bad name
Does seem very odd.
Sounds like Pull Bit
Besides, the 787 likely adheres to the A320 fly-by-wire principles of a managed 'flight envelope' that wouldn't allow the flight deck to endanger the hull and it's pax by exceeding acceptable parameters
Christ, that was quite RonSpeak
I was just thinking that.
I would have thought it would not allow anyone to try to push it beyond a very safe margin
I'm not avionically trained by nature, I think the Boeing system is Captain orientated rather then Flight data Computer [or whatever the Airbus system is] but is sounds like hooey from a distance. Steven, you really need to stop reading Yahoo 'News'
Yahoo news and sport is underrated. Some of it is quite good. Some of it is though rubbish
i know i'm a little late but i just wanted to send massive hugs to each and every person who has left a comment/ written/ contributed/ plugged the daily posts over the last few years. You're all amazing, many many hugs and thanks to everyone. Here's to further on topic contribution and conversation as this community takes a step in a different and new direction.
*special hugs to mr and mrs c for giving up so much of their time for them too*
love to all!! xx
agreed.
you made my mornings brighter. thank you so so much.
Students! [tuts, raises eyebrows and winks]
Mega props!
Wow - finally catching the end of last week's race. Is t too late to ask EJ to shut up?i
Couldn't have put it better myself. Good Night, for the last time ...
On the forum. Good golly - the EJ thru the fence thing is still painful.
You waited a week for that rubbish, in the wrong post? ;)
Who would respond?
;)
Not the point. As was said in July
Have you been drinking?
That really annoys me
I have. It's the only to watch the Singapore GP
;)
I have, am I in a minority?
Must have missed that.
Nope.
Good *cracks open another can*
too ill to be drinking/ still recovering from last night. :)
Ace ---- but I'm off to Britcar 24 in the morning.
Boooo (probably, kind of)
:D
:D
Students
Try here http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-singapore-2011-the-race
This is part of the reason the Dailies are ending and a week late this comes assalt and chilli in the wounds. . By the way, your joke wasn't funny in context, did you read the post above?
*goes off in sulk for 10 mins not to break the family friendly rules*
freshers 'flu' plus a big 'radio 1' night out and travelling = a poorly lou. :) so i shall bid you a final goodnight.
sleep well daily posts :) xx
Joke..?
Night Lou, fanks for the art links
No
I haven't told a joke yet.
Where's the joke?
Night Lou
It was a painfully bad GP, but I don't see the joke. It's always an awful race in Singapore. It's everything to make a poor poor race
This is a losing battle. I'm not quitting te daily on this note. Read above or drop it, I don't care any more
NIght Lou
I genuinely have no idea what you're on about.
It belongs here Leigh
Not one week later, that's why!
Glasses please, last orders at the Daily Post.
No, I'm comfy. My galas is full. Come back later please, I've just started my kebab
[and other pub clichés]
Fair enough if that's what you want, but I'm not going to sit around talking to myself. Be very, very aware that many do not get a chance to see the race at the time.
It's not what *I* want Leigh!
Christ above!
Some won't next year.
Exactly.
Play nice or we will get thrown out of the daily permanently
Well look, life is busy. If you don't want me here, I'll just split.
I think the point Bassano is making is Christine and Mr C want comments on the appropriate thread
That's not what I'm saying Leigh, at all. The fact that you haven't paid attention to what had been said in the last hour or in the daily post is key. You realise this is the last daily post ever?
Yes - I have been most of the whole day.
One final goodbye
http://youtu.be/GOpTxw4jFkw
Goodnight all, it's been a blast.
Night SB
Leigh, your thoughts are valued as much as everyone. I just fail to see how, in context, a conversation on last week's GP is relevant tonight when most are mourning the loss of "off topic" conversation when this is a big part of the reason why this is effectively the end of the SPC community here
Sorry if I was too personal or over dramatic but many of the regulars have a sour taste in our mouths tonight over the end of live conversation here
Fair enough, but it's not the end of the world and certainly does not require overly stern comment. Not in my eyes - it's only the internet.
Yay, a YouTube link that works as last. I can't replicate that but I think it's fair to respond in kind with a similar Supergrass track : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7SknY0oyYQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Ok, then I apologise. But my statement stands
I think Bassano's comments were unnecessarily harsh but this is the end of something we have all spent a lot of time on and some of us are absolutely gutted about it. It is not just the internet because may people on here have met each other in real life or have spent hours on skype conversations etc. This is a very sad day
Or crossed oceans and continents to meet and enjoy fun & GP's with.
Spa '10 started with a telephone conversation with Alex in August 2009. Through Sidepodast, I was able to reCh out to 10 other people and countless others online. That connection continues, even after tomorrow
Thank you!!
Relationships have been established and that's amazing. Look, the venue - is far as I'm concerned - irrelevant. That fact that people meet and interact (etc) is what is important. Everything else is just noise -- and there is nothing wrong with that either.
I think we find it very tough, not so much because the Dailys are dying per se, but because we may be getting an implied message from the death of the Dailys. And I hate this move too. A lot. But it's their site, so they can do what they want with it, and I respect that.
All that said, I think we can work around this. Did you see my suggestion at the very top of this thread about the VivaF1 chatroom?
Only if we can find somewhere to manage sensible conversations. This ends and we have nowhere ready to move to. People will drift away
Hmmm. You may not have seen my suggestion, then. There is a chatroom at VivaF1 we can move to... and you all have accounts there already too.
Yes. The trouble with chatrooms is they are volatile. You only see what is posted while you are there. So for people in different parts of the world there is no way to find out what was said when you were sleeping and there is no way to catch up after work etc.
Agreed. The VivaF1 thing is a gracious offer we should look into and see if it's appropriate for *all* when things die down.
It may be our only pathway though
There is no criticism implied or otherwise of Christine and Mr C in anything I say on this or any other subject. I just want to make that clear because when they read back through these comments it is very easy to read something into text that was not intended.
They may need a PayPal donation account soon ;)
I've not been here today due to work and then going out this evening, but before sleep i should pop in and say it has been a great, fun run of posts with fantastic variety. I'm glad I got to be a part of it with writing a few.
But 31 comments in a day without other active threads taking the attention is indefensible. We were proven wrong. We lost. Time to move on.
(I stll maintain they were always going to plummmet from whatever level they were at, once they lost admin support, and thats why they fell drastically since July.)
I'll be back on Saturday afternoon for Petit Le Mans, see you then.
Indeed. It wasn't my intention to criticize them at all. Just stating my feelings here.
Seconded. :)
Ooooh. Speaking of, will there be a live thread for that?
Very good point, and I agree with this too.
I know but I just wanted to make it very clear. Because when they read through all these comments it would be very easy to misinterpret
btw the Viva chat is a nice idea for live, but better to use the offtopic forum?
I know some hate forums for some reason
Can't argue with that.
I will be a few hours late but I will be here
Here, here
(I stll maintain they were always going to plummmet from whatever level they were at, once they lost admin support, and thats why they fell drastically since July.)
Agreed
"to the daily"
http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/cheers-to-the-sidepodcast-daily
i intend to write a live thread for Petit to be ready at about 4pm UK
something we can explore too. i think we should start with live chat, though, as that may be the interface most of us are familiar with. and the way we currently talk about things (drifting from one topic to another) lends itself better to live chat.
Yay!
Well live, as in races and sessions, I gotta say Doohickey is king. Forums don't work in an instant and social media society
but those will still be in SPC, though. we mainly need a forum for the non-GP-weekend/non-F1 talk.
It probably means nowt, but once the BritishF3 season is done, I'll probably be doing more"live" stiff in the close season.
when i say forum, i mean place for discussion. can be forum or live chat.
oooh. do tell more.
"Stuff" obviously
Tis a fitting tribute to a keyboard spoiling pursuit :)
*raises glass*
Time - I'm currently in the middle of the 40-straight working streak
Day, obviously.
we understand what the daily means to people. it's not a decision taken lightly in any respect.
it has however been a nightmare being all things to all people, 24/7, 365.
i for one am utterly exhausted.
cheers pat.
What you need is a day off - at least one per year!! You work harder than Red Bull.
;)
*hugs*
I think we do understand and we thank you. It's hard to separate emotion from commenter's profile and of course you could not have predicted that when you thought of starting a podcast on your love of F1
Onto a new chapter! :)
starts today.
Martin Whitmarsh is currently looking at the spending regime:)
'Attack The Block' is frickin' wicked! See it
Right folks, I'm off - time for Radio 3
:)
You should really rest over the F1 summer breaks. That's what they're there for. ;) Anyway, off to a new day here. Night, folks.
that's the point. with the daily, there was no rest. ever.
now we rest :)
And tomorrow will start up the Daily's replacement the Maily!
It's back to the future as Sidepodcast will post you a letter every day with lots of links for you to type into you computer or Cefax page. You can instantly reply by writing a letter back and posting it with an SAE.
The Maily, where bandwidth costs are much much lower*
*postage costs may apply
This is what child ownership does to the human brain. be aware folks. Kids are bad!
I think my brain was always like this but there you go :)
*signs up*
Poor Nina ;)
*3 day delivery rules may apply*
I have just rememebered that I did print, bind and post Lukeh one of his daily posts back in the day, and no Nina then!
limited edition.
So until.. well the Suzuka thread might be a struggle.
Onto Korea... no, that might be tough
India! No, that's my Birthday blow out weekend
I'll definitely be joining in on the Abu Dhabi bitch in', so I'll see you in November, definitely. Night folks
You're right. Maybe that was the Maily and isn't what is replacing the Daily. Instead what's replacing it is the Baily.
From tomorrow Bill Baily will be performing the daily post via Internet streaming video. If you want to add a comment you must travel to Bill's next venue and heckle during the broadcast.
♥
Night folks.
It's been fun.
[hugs, whilst not being here]
I like this idea of using Viva F1's chat room as the replacement to the Sidepodcastdaily.
BTW, I did a quick experiment with Googel Plus and I came up with an alias. So if someone calling himself "Kenji Kitana" appears on your friends list, it is just good old Jordan F1 becoming the sharp blade of the the old Honda F1 team fan club... Good news for people really want to keep their identiies a little more private I guess.
Now if someone can give me the proper Japanese for "Englishman" I can tell you that "Japanese name for Englishman" folllowed by Heisan is the proper Japanese name for "mr. C the Englishman", not to give anyone ideas about aliases...... :p
Gaijin is Japanese for foreigner. That is as close as I know
"Foreigner who does not look Asian" would be a more correct understanding. But there is a crazy term that is used to describe the British Embrassy (sic) in Tokyo. I will hunt it down at some point.
This was before I found about Viva f1's chatroom option. It seems to be a superior way of keeping us, who at least have the shared interest of F1 together than out in the general public, where we might have to spend a lot of our time defending why we like F1.
You will not believ ethe number of times I have heard NASCAR fans say "why do you watch a race when the person on pole wins the race?"
Fortunately I say that I like to see racing that actually has right hand turns....!
{Raise glass} Well, Salute SidepodcastDaily, can I request that Giggles Radio play the lament like song "Adagio For Strings" in its for lack of a better word .... memory?
So, this is it.
Seems so
It's really hitting me now. No more late night commenting with you. :(
I am sure we will find an answer to it
We need to, cause you guys always sit right here on the back of my couch so I can tell you stuff and send you random links about stuff Mark Webber is off doing or something.
We need a Sidepod Yearbook or something, or whatever you call the books with pictures of everyone, and superlatives. :)
Most Likely to Plan: Amy
Best Goalie: RG
Better yet, Most likely to be on a flight right now: Amy :)
I am not sure what is going to happen. I am a bit uncomfortable with the Viva thing. It is wrong to turn up on another site, not interact with the locals and squat in their chatroom and stop them using it
I don't like endings.
I understand that feeling. We'll need to see how that plays out. I don't want to just show up somewhere either and plunk down in their pub and start talking about F1 and nonF1 stuff.
It hurts, and it makes me worry about what will come about instead, and if the spirit is lost. I worry about losing my friends here. Real friends, not internet people.
:`(
Now a few tears.
I think we need clarification of what is allowed and what is wanted here now because I am not at all clear. Are we live commenting events other than racing? Are we having posts on space or science or any of the other subjects that have been discussed over the last few years? Or is it racing and nothing else or even F1 and nothing else?
Good questions. I don't know.
It is a certainty that some of the community will drift away and it will break up to some degree regardless of intentions and I am not at all happy about that
That is at the core of wanting to hold on here.
And we also have to face it, and things will change. Change is the only constant in the Universe, after all.
Now that Einstein turned out to be a quack I guess that is the case.
I haven't been able to keep up with all of that in the last few days.
you assume we know? okay. this is the immovable fact, if you like. repeated for clarity.
we cannot keep this up, as it currently is. if we continue as we have been we will just stop, switch off the site and go do something else.
we don't have much money, we're both unemployed (temporarily) right now and on top of all that we have lots of things we're desperate to experiment with.
from our selfish point of view, anything and everything is secondary.
we'll make the rest up as we go along. i am sorry people are sad, we don't like making people sad, we like people. unfortunately we stared something that was unsustainable long, long term.
I think it will be a long time before we find out if the other groups have been able to duplicate the result or find an error. The people who reported the first result repeated the test a few thousand times. The others need to schedule that number of runs and de-bug their set up, up front so they can guarantee their results are as accurate as possible
i think (and i don't know), but i would suggest that a sidepodspace column would be a very fine idea. we've not thought it through at all, but i would personally love it if you (or more people) kept us up to date with spacey things.
if that could in someway be tied back to f1, great. but really we haven't thought anything through. throw us ideas in email, g+, facebook or twitter. please do.
I don't expect you to know everything
Sorry to hear about your situation.
If it is unsustainable it is unsustainable. Can't argue with that.
sidepodhug
bigger sidepodhug!!
yes, yes of course. Sorry I was so cranky about it all. :( I didn't understand what was happening for you. Now I totally get it. So sorry.
I'm so grateful for you both for doing so much for so long.
Biggest sidepodhug!
Tying it to F1 is unlikely. I don't have near enough knowledge to do that even if it is possible which I doubt.
please don't be sorry. but please don't be sad either. making choices that make people sad is heartbreaking.
that's okay. giggles radio isn't f1 related and i hope dj gigolo won't stop mixing.
Yes, I understand that. On to something different with the same affection for everyone here.
This is on now, it seems to fit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zpi-iSGFaY&feature=related
..... And on a depressing note, the best they could do for the football final here was Meatloaf? Yikes!
What position does he play?
hehehe
The annoying one
Singing from the stand :-)
Is this the funny football with 4 goal posts at each end?
That's the one! My mum loves it
I haven't seen that in years. It is an interesting game though
This guy needs a new song.
i think you've found the official goodbye-daily song right there.
Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes
genius.
Ha! :-)
..just not this seriously out of tune version.
It's midnight here.
ok, I should expand that a bit to say that now the daily days are officially over here, too. But the G+ alerts keep comin', so it looks like the movers have come and put our stuff on their doorstep.
And way past time I was in bed.
Good night
Good night :)
my last ever daily post ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/an-aside-with-joe-management-issues-i-think-youd-call-it
and with that i am well and truly done.
thank you everybody.
woo hoo! I'm not usually the first to see/hear these things. :)
thank YOU. *Sidepodhugs*
Signing off, everyone.
Cheers.
See yA
I once mentioned F1 on the C show of the first series when I played the chain. See it's F1 related :)
Glad to hear that though :)
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
In Motorsport news, Martin Brundle's son Alex will be racing in Monza today in F2. Motors TV are supposedly showing it or it's available at http://www.formulatwo.com/
Tomorrow morning is MotoGP from Motegi, coverage starts at 06:30
If there's anyone here, do go to http://www.vivaf1.com/chat.php for chat and other stuff. :)
sorry no thread yet, have been stuck in traffic jam for half an hour, still sat here. Only 8 miles to home as well
I'm very sorry to hear that, but I appreciate the candour. Whatever you plan to do in the future has my full support.
