Hello once again, Friday has turned up and we’re looking at a lovely Indian Summer weekend to enjoy ahead. It’s a little bit odd writing this daily post as I’m not quite sure what to write. If you’re a fan of the Daily Posts and what they have offered over the years, it turns out that this will be the final Daily Thread as discussed yesterday. If the Dailies are going to end then they’re going to end in a triumphant hurrah! Now, onto today’s links.

In the world of Formula 1, there’s not been a huge amount of news apart from the odd bit here and there. Every Thursday Mark Webber posts an article up for the BBC and I always give it a read in work, it’s worth checking out his latest instalment as he talks about Singapore. It also seems that Bernie doesn't really care about FOTA which is no surprise, but also Christian Horner also seems quite neutral to FOTA too. I'm glad we heard from Christian because we never ever hear from him.

Elsewhere, Christine took some time yesterday to blog about the decision from the BBC to get rid of Doctor Who Confidential, behind the scenes shows that follow Doctor Who episodes when broadcast. It's not a huge surprise as they've become very irrelevant recently, although I enjoy how much Muse they use on there sometimes. I'm also incredibly excited that one of my favourite games of all time, Psychonauts, is now available on Mac! Such a surprise to see this announcement and sudden arrival. Mac owners deserve to play this piece of Tim Schafer genius! I also loved this brilliant little timewaster that Bassano shared for all the typography geeks out there - what better way to type than through llamas?!

If you’re going to do anything today then I very much recommend looking at the following link as, for today only, GOG.com are allowing you to download Broken Sword for free! One of the greatest point and click adventure games of all time, and yours for free. I can’t recommend it enough! Also this week I seem to have found myself watching a lot of the IT Crowd, so why not look at 10 of the geekiest references in the show? How many do you know? Finally, scoring from a header is a normal occurrence in football but not so much from 70 yards out...

And that’s it. It’s been an privilege to have been a part of the Daily Thread era, and I know I can say that on behalf of every single person who has written a Daily Thread, whether it was the once or whether it was regularly, that we loved every second of writing these for you. Whether it had links galore, whether it had genius drawings, or whether it was about Heikki, whatever the context of the author's Daily style, it's just been a pleasure. Sadly, all good things must come to an end.

To the Daily.

So long, and thanks for all the fish

as promised ages ago some fluffy (and some not so fluffy) pictures of lambs

    https://picasaweb.google.com/102455622619748530369/Sheep

Beware of shocking picture quality, blood and excrements.

Aaaaand I didn't have time to edit them. Sorry.

as promised ages ago some fluffy (and some not so fluffy) pictures of lambs

Some of those lambs don't look like they are the same species as their mothers. Who knew black sheep could have white lambs?

  • Kathi30/09/2011 at 00:12

To explain the pictures a bit:

All the sheep are kept in a big enclosure. Either inside or outside or both. You have to ckeck on them every ~20Min to see if any births are imminent.

Then you have to catch that sheep and put it in a birthing box

After all the lambs that are supposed to some have come, the sheep on this farm all got an ultrasound examination a few weeks ahead of the birth date to determin how many lambs they are carrying; green stripe on the mum means three lambs for example, they are put in a single box for 24h where the mum and the lamb can get to know each other. Then they are moved in a double box, after a ady or two in a box for 4 and shortly before they are allowed outside they come into a

  • Steven Roy30/09/2011 at 00:19

To explain the pictures a bit:

I had no idea farming was so high tech now. Ultrasound before the birth sound like it makes organising things so much easier when you know which sheep have lots of lambs and which will have one.

Do many of the sheep have scary blue eyes like this one?

Sheep have brownish-yellow eyes if I remember correctly. But If you take a picture with flash you get the same phenomen as with cat eyes, they seem to glow.

I have seen them glow before when driving at night but I have never seen blue eyes like that before. I guess it is just how the camera interpreted something

I took most of these pictures with my mobile phone in quite dark conditions. I didn't want to take my camera into the sheep house after the incident with my netbook (and the bucket)

I don't think a sheep house is the ideal place for a good camera. Dropping a netbook in a bucket sounds expensive

Rumours. That experiment have many places to hide systematic errors, it will be called into the right side of the line in a couple of years (or it will be confirmed, in any case it will be fun...)

A bit unfair to call it a rumour. It will be very interesting to see how it turns out. The particles only broke the speed limit by 2%

  • guille230630/09/2011 at 03:22

A bit unfair to call it a rumour

    I was being sarcastic, it's an in-joke :)

It's an old rule: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence"

It will be very interesting to see how it turns out. The particles only broke the speed limit by 2%

What I'm saying is that there are still possible experimental errors not accounted for. It's not 'proved' yet, it's just a call from the authors saying something like 'This could be big, please help us to see if it is really true'.

But I agree in that IF it turns to be right, there will be very exciting times ahead...

  • Steven Roy30/09/2011 at 03:28

What I'm saying is that there are still possible experimental errors not accounted for. It's not 'proved' yet, it's just a call from the authors saying something like 'This could be big, please help us to see if it is really true'.

It is very easy to get that level of error and not know about it.

I think the people who ran these experiments are absolutely convinced about their results but just don't want to be seen to saying so in case it turns out there are errors.

If they are right it will be interesting to see if there is a new limit or general agreement that there is no obvious limit

  • guille230630/09/2011 at 03:44

I think the people who ran these experiments are absolutely convinced about their results but just don't want to be seen to saying so in case it turns out there are errors.

We have an old saying (by experience, it's true): "An experimental physics result is trusted by all, except by the one that made the measurement. A theoretical physics result is seen with scepticism by all, except by the one who made the calculation" ;)

  • Amy30/09/2011 at 03:54

I think the people who ran these experiments are absolutely convinced about their results but just don't want to be seen to saying so in case it turns out there are errors.

Yes me too, I didn't often comment of late but I usually read them every day. There were some really innovative posts amongst them, just amazing at how talented the community is and sad that we will be losing that.

I must admit I am a bit confused about what will be left and what is allowed as a comment since off-comment isn't desired, will it be totally F1 now?

We don't have that here, either, so that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, you guys even have a list of who's online beside the chat window, so it's more advanced in that respect. :)

The irony of today's post is that it will be full of comments that are in the wrong thread #sorryMrC

  • Alex Andronov30/09/2011 at 07:51

I'm excited about the bold new direction, bold new directions are cool. But i'm also keen to mark the end of the era though. So in that spirit, and the spirit of daily posts over the years help me mark #theendofanera with your saddest face

But also, and much more importantly, your happiest positive face

Saw Costa coming, but not Willis. Geoff may help Ross in establishing positive behaviors at Brackley. I see Mercedes possible being more methodical and efficient in how they go about doing things. That's all good, but I think their bigger weakness right now is creativity in making faster cars.

I remember trying to do the same for the first Singapore GP. Apparently, airlines normally post dates 10 months before the actual day. So flights for September 2012 become available in November 2011.

That said, where I am, that's not always the cheapest option. They may have seat sales where they slash prices by 50% or more. So if you buy early, you miss out on that.

At one stage the flights I took to Singapore this year were selling for $11 less than I paid, that was not enough to get mad over :D

Thankfully flights to Singapore never change too much from here, every plane is full all the time since most people are just stopping over there.

  • Stuart Taylor30/09/2011 at 09:36

Damn it, I missed out on the neutrino discussion. I barely ever understand what anyone is talking about, but here I would have been in my element(ry particle)!

Anyway, I'm 99% sure that the experiment results are incorrect. It was a mistake to publish them.

  • RubberGoat30/09/2011 at 10:02

Both you and Guille. What makes you guys think so?

Anyway, I'm 99% sure that the experiment results are incorrect. It was a mistake to publish them.

They may be incorrect but they may very well be correct. This would not be the first time in the history that someone proves or suggests a mistake in a theory created by someone else ... There was time before Newton, Mendel, Darwin, Einstein ... At the end, there is a reason why talk about theories, not facts ...

  • Stuart Taylor30/09/2011 at 10:09

Anyway, I'm 99% sure that the experiment results are incorrect. It was a mistake to publish them.

Both you and Guille. What makes you guys think so?

Well firstly, the speed of light as a relativistic speed limit for the universe has a mountain of experimental evidence behind it, while this finding only has one experiment that has yet to be replicated. It's kind of like that blurry video of Bigfoot. Zoologists have never seen any evidence for Bigfoot in centuries of exploring the fauna of the world, but someone turns up with a blurry video of a hairy mancreature and suddenly eveyone jumps on it like it's some amazing evidence.

The error margins are very hard to control - neutrinos are extremely difficult to detect, let alone measure. tens of thousands of them pass right through you every second and don't interact with you at all. They are so, so hard to work with, that it's overwhelmingly likely that there was a problem with the xperiment than the established theory.

  • RubberGoat30/09/2011 at 10:10

So this could end up being just like cold fusion?

  • Stuart Taylor30/09/2011 at 10:12

There was time before Newton, Mendel, Darwin, Einstein ... At the end, there is a reason why talk about theories, not facts ...

Woah, slow down! A Scientific theory isn't a "hypothesis" - it's the highest possible level a scienfitic body of work can attain. It refers to the huge body of verified understanding about an area of science. The Theory of Relativity/Evolution/etc is as concrete as you can get.

Proper scientific theories doesn't tend to be 'wrong' per se, but in constant need of refinement.. Newton was "wrong" overall, but he was "right" within the range he was able to work with. Einstein expanded on his theory to include high energy situations. Darwin was "wrong" but only because he didn't know about genes. Etc :)

  • Stuart Taylor30/09/2011 at 10:13

So this could end up being just like cold fusion?

    In what way?

(I really hope cold fusion ends up working! I may be a bit naive about it, though, but I have all my fingers crossed)

  • F1Wolf30/09/2011 at 10:17

Woah, slow down! A Scientific theory isn't a "hypothesis" - it's the highest possible level a scienfitic body of work can attain.

I agree, but "the highest possible" applies to certain time in history. Someday someone may be able to go higher than the highest used to be :-) New findings do not have to necessarily negate the old ones ...

  • RubberGoat30/09/2011 at 10:17

    In what way?

That they thought they had cracked it, but nobody could replicate it.

  • Stuart Taylor30/09/2011 at 10:18

That they thought they had cracked it, but nobody could replicate it.

oh right - yeah, like that. Replication is the key!

  • guille230630/09/2011 at 12:31

At least there is some excitement in the WRC ... even if it is intra-team.

I think Hirvonen is his main treat now, he will take the lead of the championship on Sunday (barring some disaster). Ogier will play Nr 2 the next two rallies

I think Hirvonen is his main treat now, he will take the lead of the championship on Sunday (barring some disaster). Ogier will play Nr 2 the next two rallies

I just don't see Hirvonen as a threat to Loeb. He's like Massa - he had one chance and lost it. NOt sure about the team orders - Loeb had to play No 2 at a rally earlier this year too.

  • Leigh O'Gorman30/09/2011 at 12:42

For anyone even vaguely interested in the 2011 IndyCar rulebook, I found it:

I base the idea about Hirvonen in that Ogier is not a threat at all, unless Loeb also crashes out of Spain. Loeb played Nr 2 earlier when both had chances, now is all on Loeb or nothing. Ogier is affectively the Nr 2 driver after Australia, I think there is not question about that.

If that translates into a good chance for Hirvonen, that's another matter. At least he has a chance he hadn't a month ago

I am sure a lot of them would avoid something where they were measured against people competing for the same career. A lot of successful drivers have made it to F1 by avoiding anyone who could be real competition. It is even said Senna choose to spend a year in FF2000 because he didn't fancy going head to head with Tommy Byrne in F3 so it is not just average drivers who do this.

I think joe was a little confused, kingfisher never really was a low cost carrier. it was a midmarket airline that was better & cheaper than the state carrier but cost more than the likes of Jet.

I hadnt even heard of the low cost subsidarry that has been shut down

I think SOME of it is that some of us don't use our real names on here (like Bassano and Journeyer).

But I"m pretty sure I'd recognize Bassano's bald head as long as it's in his profile photo.

Besides, the 787 likely adheres to the A320 fly-by-wire principles of a managed 'flight envelope' that wouldn't allow the flight deck to endanger the hull and it's pax by exceeding acceptable parameters

It's not what *I* want Leigh!

    Christ above!

Well look, life is busy. If you don't want me here, I'll just split.

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 00:16

Well look, life is busy. If you don't want me here, I'll just split.

I think the point Bassano is making is Christine and Mr C want comments on the appropriate thread

  • Bassano01/10/2011 at 00:17

Well look, life is busy. If you don't want me here, I'll just split.

That's not what I'm saying Leigh, at all. The fact that you haven't paid attention to what had been said in the last hour or in the daily post is key. You realise this is the last daily post ever?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/10/2011 at 00:18

You realise this is the last daily post ever?

Yes - I have been most of the whole day.

    Night SB

  • Bassano01/10/2011 at 00:23

Leigh, your thoughts are valued as much as everyone. I just fail to see how, in context, a conversation on last week's GP is relevant tonight when most are mourning the loss of "off topic" conversation when this is a big part of the reason why this is effectively the end of the SPC community here

Sorry if I was too personal or over dramatic but many of the regulars have a sour taste in our mouths tonight over the end of live conversation here

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/10/2011 at 00:24

Fair enough, but it's not the end of the world and certainly does not require overly stern comment. Not in my eyes - it's only the internet.

Yay, a YouTube link that works as last. I can't replicate that but I think it's fair to respond in kind with a similar Supergrass track : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7SknY0oyYQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Ok, then I apologise. But my statement stands

I think Bassano's comments were unnecessarily harsh but this is the end of something we have all spent a lot of time on and some of us are absolutely gutted about it. It is not just the internet because may people on here have met each other in real life or have spent hours on skype conversations etc. This is a very sad day

  • Bassano01/10/2011 at 00:32

Or crossed oceans and continents to meet and enjoy fun & GP's with.

Spa '10 started with a telephone conversation with Alex in August 2009. Through Sidepodast, I was able to reCh out to 10 other people and countless others online. That connection continues, even after tomorrow

    Thank you!!

Relationships have been established and that's amazing. Look, the venue - is far as I'm concerned - irrelevant. That fact that people meet and interact (etc) is what is important. Everything else is just noise -- and there is nothing wrong with that either.

I think we find it very tough, not so much because the Dailys are dying per se, but because we may be getting an implied message from the death of the Dailys. And I hate this move too. A lot. But it's their site, so they can do what they want with it, and I respect that.

All that said, I think we can work around this. Did you see my suggestion at the very top of this thread about the VivaF1 chatroom?

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 00:35

That connection continues, even after tomorrow

Only if we can find somewhere to manage sensible conversations. This ends and we have nowhere ready to move to. People will drift away

That connection continues, even after tomorrow

Only if we can find somewhere to manage sensible conversations. This ends and we have nowhere ready to move to. People will drift away

Hmmm. You may not have seen my suggestion, then. There is a chatroom at VivaF1 we can move to... and you all have accounts there already too.

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 00:37

All that said, I think we can work around this. Did you see my suggestion at the very top of this thread about the VivaF1 chatroom?

Yes. The trouble with chatrooms is they are volatile. You only see what is posted while you are there. So for people in different parts of the world there is no way to find out what was said when you were sleeping and there is no way to catch up after work etc.

  • Bassano01/10/2011 at 00:37

...But it's their site, so they can do what they want with it, and I respect that.

Agreed. The VivaF1 thing is a gracious offer we should look into and see if it's appropriate for *all* when things die down.

  • Bassano01/10/2011 at 00:38

Apparently, Salti said it retains message for 3 days. I'm not sure about that, but a quick check shows it does retain messages from at least the past 24 hours - which I think should be enough for now. And to be honest, we don't really have a lot of options right now.

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 00:39

There is no criticism implied or otherwise of Christine and Mr C in anything I say on this or any other subject. I just want to make that clear because when they read back through these comments it is very easy to read something into text that was not intended.

I've not been here today due to work and then going out this evening, but before sleep i should pop in and say it has been a great, fun run of posts with fantastic variety. I'm glad I got to be a part of it with writing a few.

But 31 comments in a day without other active threads taking the attention is indefensible. We were proven wrong. We lost. Time to move on.

(I stll maintain they were always going to plummmet from whatever level they were at, once they lost admin support, and thats why they fell drastically since July.)

I'll be back on Saturday afternoon for Petit Le Mans, see you then.

something we can explore too. i think we should start with live chat, though, as that may be the interface most of us are familiar with. and the way we currently talk about things (drifting from one topic to another) lends itself better to live chat.

but those will still be in SPC, though. we mainly need a forum for the non-GP-weekend/non-F1 talk.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/10/2011 at 00:47

It probably means nowt, but once the BritishF3 season is done, I'll probably be doing more"live" stiff in the close season.

Au reviour Daily post. I'll miss you.

    Au revoir indeed.

    Wait! I had an idea.

    VivaF1 has a chatroom! http://www.vivaf1.com/chat.php

Many of the SPC folks already have accounts here anyway, so it's a move we can easily make. Watcha think?

I like this idea of using Viva F1's chat room as the replacement to the Sidepodcastdaily.

BTW, I did a quick experiment with Googel Plus and I came up with an alias. So if someone calling himself "Kenji Kitana" appears on your friends list, it is just good old Jordan F1 becoming the sharp blade of the the old Honda F1 team fan club... Good news for people really want to keep their identiies a little more private I guess.

Now if someone can give me the proper Japanese for "Englishman" I can tell you that "Japanese name for Englishman" folllowed by Heisan is the proper Japanese name for "mr. C the Englishman", not to give anyone ideas about aliases...... :p

"Foreigner who does not look Asian" would be a more correct understanding. But there is a crazy term that is used to describe the British Embrassy (sic) in Tokyo. I will hunt it down at some point.

This was before I found about Viva f1's chatroom option. It seems to be a superior way of keeping us, who at least have the shared interest of F1 together than out in the general public, where we might have to spend a lot of our time defending why we like F1.

You will not believ ethe number of times I have heard NASCAR fans say "why do you watch a race when the person on pole wins the race?"

Fortunately I say that I like to see racing that actually has right hand turns....!

We need to, cause you guys always sit right here on the back of my couch so I can tell you stuff and send you random links about stuff Mark Webber is off doing or something.

  • Kai01/10/2011 at 03:07

We need a Sidepod Yearbook or something, or whatever you call the books with pictures of everyone, and superlatives. :)

I am not sure what is going to happen. I am a bit uncomfortable with the Viva thing. It is wrong to turn up on another site, not interact with the locals and squat in their chatroom and stop them using it

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 03:09

We need a Sidepod Yearbook or something, or whatever you call the books with pictures of everyone, and superlatives. :)

I understand that feeling. We'll need to see how that plays out. I don't want to just show up somewhere either and plunk down in their pub and start talking about F1 and nonF1 stuff.

  • Kai01/10/2011 at 03:11

    I don't like endings.

It hurts, and it makes me worry about what will come about instead, and if the spirit is lost. I worry about losing my friends here. Real friends, not internet people.

  • Kai01/10/2011 at 03:11

    :`(

    Now a few tears.

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 03:13

I understand that feeling. We'll need to see how that plays out. I don't want to just show up somewhere either and plunk down in their pub and start talking about F1 and nonF1 stuff.

I think we need clarification of what is allowed and what is wanted here now because I am not at all clear. Are we live commenting events other than racing? Are we having posts on space or science or any of the other subjects that have been discussed over the last few years? Or is it racing and nothing else or even F1 and nothing else?

    Good questions. I don't know.

It hurts, and it makes me worry about what will come about instead, and if the spirit is lost. I worry about losing my friends here. Real friends, not internet people.

It is a certainty that some of the community will drift away and it will break up to some degree regardless of intentions and I am not at all happy about that

  • Kai01/10/2011 at 03:16

It is a certainty that some of the community will drift away and it will break up to some degree regardless of intentions and I am not at all happy about that

That is at the core of wanting to hold on here.

And we also have to face it, and things will change. Change is the only constant in the Universe, after all.

Now that Einstein turned out to be a quack I guess that is the case.

I haven't been able to keep up with all of that in the last few days.

  • Mr C01/10/2011 at 03:21

you assume we know? okay. this is the immovable fact, if you like. repeated for clarity.

we cannot keep this up, as it currently is. if we continue as we have been we will just stop, switch off the site and go do something else.

we don't have much money, we're both unemployed (temporarily) right now and on top of all that we have lots of things we're desperate to experiment with.

from our selfish point of view, anything and everything is secondary.

we'll make the rest up as we go along. i am sorry people are sad, we don't like making people sad, we like people. unfortunately we stared something that was unsustainable long, long term.

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 03:22

I haven't been able to keep up with all of that in the last few days.

I think it will be a long time before we find out if the other groups have been able to duplicate the result or find an error. The people who reported the first result repeated the test a few thousand times. The others need to schedule that number of runs and de-bug their set up, up front so they can guarantee their results are as accurate as possible

i think (and i don't know), but i would suggest that a sidepodspace column would be a very fine idea. we've not thought it through at all, but i would personally love it if you (or more people) kept us up to date with spacey things.

if that could in someway be tied back to f1, great. but really we haven't thought anything through. throw us ideas in email, g+, facebook or twitter. please do.

  • Steven Roy01/10/2011 at 03:25

If it is unsustainable it is unsustainable. Can't argue with that.

Tying it to F1 is unlikely. I don't have near enough knowledge to do that even if it is possible which I doubt.

please don't be sorry. but please don't be sad either. making choices that make people sad is heartbreaking.

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - The medical car began following the F1 cars around their first lap of a race, on 1 Oct in '78, but at which track?

  • Bassano01/10/2011 at 09:35

In Motorsport news, Martin Brundle's son Alex will be racing in Monza today in F2. Motors TV are supposedly showing it or it's available at http://www.formulatwo.com/

Tomorrow morning is MotoGP from Motegi, coverage starts at 06:30
