Monday is overwith, and there's the last in the series of Sidepodpanel for you to get your teeth into. However, if you are done with that, then there are also some good conversations going on in the comments. Topics include:

  • What the BBC are going to do with their intro? Will it be anything like ITVs and will they use the Chain?
  • With Hockenheim on the verge of pulling out of F1, who will be next? Will Bernie ever notice, and if he does, will he do anything about it?
  • Jackie kicked off an excellent numbers game, with each number needing an F1 fact to go alongside it. At the moment, we have reached 46, so put your thinking caps on for 47. The previous numbers are collected in the wiki.
  • Hamilton has selected his favourite corners to make the ultimate track. Do you agree with his choices, and if not, what would you put in there instead?

That should keep you going for a while, but don't forget that you don't have to abide by anything I've said. Feel free to bring your own topics to the table and we can all get stuck in. I'll see you in the comments.

I got 47 with the Manfred Winklehock statistic in December 1, so here's the next one:

48 - number of points Hesketh got in its existence.

This reminds me of when I did the number lists for an entire month in my blog.

  • Dom02/12/2008 at 00:15

49 - The number of German drivers who have competed in F1.

I think it's fair enough. The most recent Herbie movie starred Lindsay Lohan, and she certainly enjoys speed.

Apparently, Mr Speed has landed himself a full time NASCAR drive after exceeding expectations.

He's working with a guy who helped Montoya but was fired after falling out with the team. I know nothing about NASCAR but it sounds like there's just as much politics as F1.

55 - Brabham BT55 which was in effect the prototype for the almost all conquering MacLaren MP4/4 of 1988. If only they had had a V shaped engine rather than a straight 4 who knows what it could have achieved.

It was also the car in which Elio deAngelis died in testing making him the last driver to die in an F1 car prior to Imola 1994.

Just to prove that I have no artistic ability whatever I have dropioed a sidepodflag.

It has a yellow background that I nicked from Jordan's flag with a chequered flag border to represent racing. The main item on the flag is a sidepodcake surrounded by the world which sidepodcast is trying to conquer, a panda, a Drench flacg representing Christine's favourite drivers and a champaaagne bottle.

You seem to forget that technology has advanced in the period of time between BBC's coverage and ITV's. Back then, the hardware and software available was probably nowhere near as advanced as it is now. But I like to think they managed quite nicely with what they had then.

how many times this year did fivelive cut to the golf or the cricket? nothings really changed. they have something to prove between now and the beginning of the season, but wait until wimbledon kicks off.

true enough. but if there really was a market wouldn't itv have exploited it?

if there was an audience willing to tune into a saturday night f1 show, wouldn't they have found some advertising, and just made one?

  • R.G (Survivors : A pandemic of brackets is taking over mankind)02/12/2008 at 19:36

how many times this year did fivelive cut to the golf or the cricket? nothings really changed. they have something to prove between now and the beginning of the season, but wait until wimbledon kicks off.

Thats cos five live has 2 stations, that and sports extra, and usually on a sunday race weekend, they chuck the football on extra, and usually, only the fans of the football teams will listen to extra, so they'll stick updates on the Augusta Masters on five live.

BBC only has the open, match of the day, and ski sunday (They still do that?), its not gonna impede on the big f1 tv wise is it? they have BBC1 and BBC2, audience watch both.

  • me02/12/2008 at 19:41

how many times during the season did we tune into fp1 / 2 and find nothing but that silly advert perpetually looping on sportsextra? it's not a bandwidth issue, they just weren't that bothered.

read back through the live comments this year, we spent a lot of time bitching about the radio coverage. not as much as we did about itv, but enough to suggest we'll be lucky if the beebs f1 love affair last's as much as a whole season.

  • R.G (Survivors : A pandemic of brackets is taking over mankind)02/12/2008 at 19:48

how many times during the season did we tune into fp1 / 2 and find nothing but that silly advert perpetually looping on sportsextra? it’s not a bandwidth issue, they just weren’t that bothered.

Sometimes it might not be accesible to do a free practice coverage? Radio is harder to broadcast than tv. With TV you don't need sound, know who's liveries are whos and you can normally work out what is going on, it worked for me in Japan. No commentry and I could still tell Alonso would overtake Kubica at the pitstop, maybe not Bourdais getting penalised (but then, who could :D)

With radio, you have to describe anything. And with going to England v Australia in the cricket is more or less similar to an ad break. It lasts 30 seconds. AND, extra is not one you can access in most cars. So really, will you put cricket on over football?

I think thats one hell of a waffle, but y'know

  • me02/12/2008 at 19:54

I think thats one hell of a waffle, but y’know

personally i hope you're right. they may surprise me and provide the best coverage ever for the entirety of their contract. i think we're going to need a trulliometer for auntie though.

I strongly suspect the reason the British Grand Prix was moved forward to the 19 - 21 June from the end of June is that the BBC insisted it was moved so that it didn't clash with Wimbledon. Wimbledon runs from 22 June to 5 July and the Nürburgring GP is the 10 - 12 July.

  • littlepurplegoth02/12/2008 at 22:33

    Someone’s been on dictionary.com

Nope... There are these useful books known as thesaurus and academic descriptors...

Yes I actually found something on *paper*

    Oh the shame

LPG (who has her nose in books more than the net anyway)

  • Steven Roy02/12/2008 at 22:35

    Horace?

    Hamulus?

    Handspike?

    Hatchet?

    Helve?

    hakenkreuz?

    hallux?

    halyard?

No to all of the above and a bit worried that there might be a hakenkreuz in the space station.

  • littlepurplegoth02/12/2008 at 22:39

It was a good luck symbol long before it was misappropriated by that lot!

I thought it was only Max's family friends who called it a hakenkreuz though.

  • littlepurplegoth02/12/2008 at 22:47

Hakenkreuz as a name is in use back in the 13th century and possibly before that.

umm, the only thing is i'm probably not the best person to do that, as i spend my life trying to do less work :)

    and r.g's just legged it!

Hakenkreuz as a name is in use back in the 13th century and possibly before that.

I thought the Hindus invented it and called it a swatika. I had no idea it had a Germanic name that far back.

It has never stopped. It just hasn't had much attention recently. If you feel like adding something to it carry on. I am sure it would take much to get it moving again.

Sorry, don't know much about it, it's before my time on sidepodcast but it sounds like it was fun. I'd need a quick resume of what was done to catch up.

No - your local bookshop, or amazon/borders/waterstones etc online if you don't do 'footfall' places ;-P

Could free up more time to spend on sidepodcast though rofl

first port of call is t'other wiki:

    http://alianoralacanta.wik.is/Sidepodcast%27s_Corner/Relentless_Sidepodcast_Panda-Cosworth_Racing_F1_Project

that's the wiki alia setup before christine setup another (cause you need a minimum of two, it's internets law).

i may have to spend some time there meself.

We decided to start our own F1 team. I think originally it was Scott's idea and everyone was either given a job or appointed themself and origianally that was all that was meant to happen but it became slightly insane after that. The best way to understand it is to read through the wiki on it because it started off in the comments but when that became unmanageable it was switched to Alianora's wiki.

THe last thing that happened is that I suggested that maybe there could be a film script in it and RG volunteered to write one. He must be nearly finished by now.

  • Steven Roy02/12/2008 at 23:31

The on page links don't work but use the titles on the left hand side and you get all the info.

    oh dear:

"I hear that Honda Racing's head honcho Nick Fry has been forced to abandon the team's annual media lunch following 11th-hour concerns over how much it would have cost."

"The event, at which around 40 guests were expected, has been one of the highlights of the motor racing calendar for almost a decade and was due to go ahead this afternoon at Raymond Blanc's swish Oxfordshire restaurant Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons."

A team that voluntarily did not have sponsors for two seasons cannot afford to take 40 people out for a meal? I think someone's head needs to roll.

I think this is part of Max's cost saving plan. It is like putting the clocks back an hour in autumn except we are putting them back a day and having another December 2nd.

  • Jordan Allen ()03/12/2008 at 01:47

Ah, well, the difference for us is that RSPCRF1 has so much money in the bank that it could afford to buy the bank, which Honda F1 cannot.

  • Alianora La Canta04/12/2008 at 12:12

    Ahhh, Are not the R & D labs in internal rooms? {Jordan Allen - 9 comments ago}

Some of them are. The Panda Examination Hall is open-air because pandas developed bad tempers if they're cooped up for days/weeks at a time. Also, at least one of the R&D "labs" is cunningly disguised as a PDA...

  • Alianora La Canta04/12/2008 at 12:14

    Alinora, can you test the validity of using the the KERBs device as taser gun on the sleeping Chief Illumination Optimisation Officer over there? {Jordan Allen - 8 comments ago}

Test failed. Probably on the grounds that we're not using an electrical method. RSPCRF1 will use environmentally-friendly biological methods modelled on the panda's digestive system. One advantage is that there is no danger to anyone's health (unless there are people made out of thin air or bamboo in this blog).

We have a braking system that produces bamboo rather than heat? How?

  • Alianora La Canta04/12/2008 at 12:51

What I meant was that the KERS system accepts air or bamboo as inputs. It then removes the energy (or at least that energy stored in the input as heat, chemistry or gravitational energy) and dispenses the remainder through a pair of tiny hatches underneath the car. It shouldn't produce heat because the heat absorption rate was 99.912% in R&D testing, and for that matter the bamboo wastage wouldn't be very high either.
