It's December already? How time flies. There has been some consternation in the comments recently about the lack of F1 news and whether the off season is a good or a bad thing. I think that should be our first topic of discussion.
- Do you like the off season? Is it a time to recharge your batteries and wind down, especially after racing like we've had this year? Or is it a drought of F1 news that leaves you bored and counting down the days until the next season begins?
- The Sidepodspace mission has come to an end, and I think that will probably make Space I Spy pretty difficult. The game continues though, with everyone being stuck on H. (And it's not the Hubble Telescope.)
- Check out the live recording of the final episode of Sidepodpanel Series 1. The edited version should be out in the next day or so, but it's worth having a look at the live show as there's inevitably some laughs that get cut.
As usual, there are no limitations on what you can discuss and the above list is just there to get you started. Happy December, and I will see you in the comments.
It's the first! (sorry, me)
And on that note the alcohol has caught up with Andy...
Night all....
Goodnight guys. Have a happy Monday.
yes, happy 1st of December everyone. i'm off as well. night all
G'night Lou.
Just got to the bar. Ordered the first of many single malts. It's gonna be a late one for me! And I have to be up early.
Happy 1st Dec, apparently. (Why is that a landmark date?)
What I liked about the F1 off season here on the west coast of Canada we get Speed Channel and in the past they have shown BTCC,DTM,British GT,FIA GT,Aussie V8, Japanese Touring Car etc, now that Speed Channel (formerly known as Speed Vision) have lost their vision and decided to show mostly nascar and that leaves motor racing fans such as myself with an empty void. I'm sure glad I came across Sidepodcast, It helps to fill that empty void. Keep up the excellent work guys.
And I too is signing off for the night and putting the laptop to bed. Sorry I couldn't be around earlier, but from what I've heard it was a great show. Good night everybody.
Bah humbug!
The F1 off-season seems different each time. Last year it was incredibly hectic (good for my first NaBloPoMo, bad for the sport in general). This year, it's been a bit slow (as evidenced by the Spanish press getting bored about five weeks earlier than usual...)
Ahhh, where in the virtual internet world did you ask about my sidepodcastland flag, me?
Would like to know what is it that I am exactly replying to, that all.
If the FIA tells Bernie that his medal idea is a stupid way of deciding a 17-18 race season can mad Max turn around and say he thinks it's a good idea and overturn a decision by the FIA?
Hey hey! How was the last weekend of Series 2 (i.e. Panel Series 1)? I hope all went well.
But now what do we do? :)
Holiday here today, by the way. Woot woot! :D
max has the power to do anything he likes. but i'm assuming if the times says it's going to be overturned, then it was likely word form max that informed them.
not guaranteed though.
about 10 seconds after you posted it, i asked what the colours represented:

:)
we're taking
a week offnext weekend off, but there's more entertainment to come, honest.Phew! Back to reality after much Thanksgiving shenanigans here in the States. Lots of stuff to catch up on. You guys work hard.
B.I. (Before Internet) the off season was intolerable - what did we do to entertain ourselves? But now there's always something to get your nose into online. Plus there will be car launches, drivers getting delusions of grandeur about how they'll win races next year, new test and race drivers, pre-season testing sandbagging, plus the usual bickering, name calling and general political arsing about that we all come to expect.
How can you get bored? ;)
They're not racing! I mean, there'll be stuff to help us not get VERY bored, but nothing can replace good ol' racing. :)
it's a lot of aggravation though isn't it, racing? early starts and late nights. friday's off. broken live timing and dodgy justin.tv embeds.
it's nice to have a break and return to normality.
I guess it helps that the racing fits my timezone for all bar a few races, and with only 1 race in America left, that means I only need to stay up once for an F1 race, the rest staying in my regular bodyclock. :)
I miss those early morning races in America ! Those were the only ones I could watch with no disruptions from anywhere ! not much sleep then before work on Monday that is only sligt incovenience, bring them back !
My first New Years resolution: Never to confuse my Trulliometer with my barometer again. (A Hurricane was coming....)
Blue Sky, Yellow Sun. The sun never setting on the Sidepodcastland Empire and all that. You guys must be from England not to recognise that. Must be all the rain and on good days, fog you get....
Looks really nice when reduced to 12*18 size for fantasy racers.
Borrowed an actual real flag from history and basically changed the colours but kept the same meaning.
What's this thing you call sun? Have not seen this unusual thing in about a week.
I'm thinking of taking up juggling, maybe plate spinning. Might look to make the flag, or look up classic races on t'internet.
Good god its the 1st of December, handful of days till christmas, and today, of course, the season review is out I believe.
I think I should start some rumours.
Fisichella is set to join McLaren with Kovalainen back to Renault, Liuzzi partners Sutil and Piquet is kicked out.
Honda are in reported debt, if they don't find any money soon, they could be sold to potential buyers, including Michael Schumacher and Paul Stoddart.
Medals is set to be scrapped for 09, however Bernie has a new favourite, favouritism. Whoever is most popular in the FIA and F1 will get the win.
I like the rumour business.
The F1 off-season doesn't bother me too much as there's a decent smattering of other motorsport to keep me occupied. The WRC season doesn't finish until this weekend and starts up again in February. Plus, the next A1GP is in January, as is the Autosport International.
If all else fails, you could always develop an interest in wintersports. You'd be surprised how exciting biathlon can be (the new season starts on Wednesday, if anyone's interested). Unless global warming bites us all in the ass, this will always coincide nicely with the motorsport closed season.
Is this measured by how early they link De La Rosa to a drive with someone?
De La Rosa is rumoured to be the shock second driver for Honda, due to their financial difficulties, they cannot afford Barrichello, Di Grassi or Senna.
This sounds like a fun game. Did you hear that Dietrich Mateschitz is planning to buy out Bernie and CVC and rebrand Formula 1 as the "Red Bull Road Racing Series"?
I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of 5 other friends that Franck Montagny is getting that 2nd seat at Honda alongside Jenson. So in essence, the Senna and di Grassi test was pointless.
You forget that Sato is to be their primary driver....and gets a perfect season of wins.....
Sato: 170 points!
i missed it yesterday. quality karting vid courtesy of axis:
http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2008/12/barrichello-wins-massa-invitational.html
Here's the problem with Bernie's straight win Medal system:
Supposeing Honda sees the light, boots Button, resigns Barrichello and hires Sato and builds the best car that F1 has ever seen and kicks even the MP4/14 a....
Honda gets a complete season (1st and 2nd places in each race)Barrichello gets a perfect season and picks up 170 points total. Sato gets 17 2nd places for a total of 136 points.
Under the current points system, Sato still has a a snowball's chance in the centre of the earth of winning the Driver's up until the 13th race of the season in Monza. (2nd weekend of September).
With Bernie's system, a perfect season for Barrichello gives him the Driver's by Germany, and the summer has yet to really start.
While the possiblity of any Honda getting a perfect half-season is doubtful, far too many perfect half-seasons have occurred to make Bernie's useless, like Mansell for example.
Oh dear Christine.... Last.fm has revealed your musical tastes. Mel & Kim - Respectable? Chumbawumba? James Blunt?
we've never denied it. but you just never know which of us it is listening :)
Is there a problem?
"bored and counting down the days until the next season begins?"
Nah ... only 117 days 8 hours and 47 mins to go!
still F1 chat amongst friends makes it more bareable :)
I have just listened back to the Giggles Rap and it is even better the second time. I think it is a shame that it is only one verse. I think Alex should add another couple of verses and release it.
Please don't tell me that... :P
Just about recovered from a really bad stomach ache. feeling better now.
James Blunt? :-|
Check out what Mitch Benn thinks of James Blunt here (warning swearing): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=etYvtT7q5XA
seconded.
Good job it's not his playlist then!
It's easy to pick out the ones you don't like but there are some real gems in there too.
BBC Personality of the Year has been announced
Rebecca Adlington
Nicole Cooke
Chris Hoy
Rebecca Romero
Bradley Wiggins
Ben Ainslies
Christine Ohuruogu
Lewis Hamilton
Joe Calzaghe
Andy Murray
Last good one in my eyes you played was Radio Ga Ga on the 19th of November
Seven Olympic contenders?
You'd think there weren't any other sports.
I heard the sports personality of the year list earlier and I don't think there have ever been more people nominated that no-one has ever heard of. There are a whole bunch that no-one at all had heard of before the Olympics or for that matter since. As far as i can see only the bottom three are well known to the general public. As for Christine Ohuruogu - how can a drugs cheat be nominated for such an award? It's bad enough that she was allowed to run at the Olympics but can they seriously give the SPOY to a drugs cheat?
so the conclusion in the comments, back in september was it would go to an olympian:
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/09/18/its-just-a-personality-contest/
any changes on that front?
You seem to have overlooked Pet Shop Boys - What Have I Done To Deserve This? Some people. :-)
I think the swimmer with the big nose will get it despite the fact that no-one 'nose' anything else about her and Chris Hoy got 3 golds to her 2. For me it should go to Calzaghe because his achievements dwarf everyone else's and he looks like retiring this year. Unfortunately he belongs to the generation of boxers whose careers have been shown on pay per view so the general public doesn't know about them.
Come on The Wiggler!
oh, jeez.
just send a 2 part voicemail with my personal review of 2008 as requested :)
I don't disagree with you there, but James Blunt?! ;)
Nah, we need some proper Geordies in the list, or second best, Rob Smedley.
Btw, since I was ill over the weekend, I'll give you it sometime this week, most likely Wednesday.
I think the general public does know about about Calzaghe. After all, he did win Sports Personality last year.
Reading the general shortlists by the papers, the News of the World one, surprised me.
Rebecca AdlingtonBen AinslieNicole CookeLewis HamiltonChris HoyAndy MurrayVictoria PendletonRebecca RomeroCristiano RonaldoBradley Wiggins
Apologies, I was meant to highlight Cristiano Ronaldo. Hes not even British!
Looks like it'll be co-hosted by Jake Humphrey too.
someone told me that :)
Andy Murray??
Whats he doing on the list?
He got to a few finals, won a few, y'know. He did better that Rudeski who won it in 98
That's what you get when you read the news of the world. ;)
yea but I though this was about personalities?
:D
Betting sites seem to have Lewis as odds-on favourite to win BBC SPOTY.
Just bought my Autosport Tickets :)
Oh, that's not a good acronym.
I doubt Nigel Mansell would have won it twice if it was. :)
:D
ah damn, still have't got mine yet... thanks for reminding me :)
James Blunt is ok... you need to find the interview he did with J.Ross earlier in the year, he isn't anything like as 'bland' as is made out... he left Jonathon standing and then some (woohoo) to the point the JR got the &^%$ ripped out of him by Russell Brand the following week...
(need smileys... need smileys...)
I'm going to have to go and find this playlist now aren't I, lol. I'm always totally nosey about what other people listen to (especially as I have to listen to a lot of my favourite stuff/genre when mister isn't here cos he doesn't like it... sigh)
Ah - is that the real reason he was so accomodating about my desire for a pretty black nano last year? Hmmmm
Oh - back OT (oops) I suspect that Lewis may win the SPOTY... although I think that I might prefer the young female swimmer, just to redress the balance y'know (that and she did something not done by a female british swimmer since 1908, the last british person to win at F1 was rather more recent....)
True
Lewis is trying to put Herman Tilke to shame.
I guess he's got plenty of free time...
The BBC intro that someone knocked-up (as mentioned yesterday) has been re-jigged. It has less Lewis Hamilton and just for Christine, doesn't feature her.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtms1IppbPg
that looks like a fun game.
anyone fancy beating that?
That is perfection.
Anyway I hear there is going to be a sidepodcast xmas party :-)
Does this mean everyone is going to get a couple of bottles of wine in and make fools of themselves on-line? :-)
Damn, beat me to it. Incidentally, Damon Hill has also won twice, with Jackie Stewart and Stirling Moss also winning, so pretty much every successful F1 driver
That ain't one bad of a track
That ain't one bad of an intro. Its got one hell of a lot of the Beemers, go us!
That ain't one bad of an party.
yay! they have put a small clip of Jenson in it :)
Oops, posted too soon. Was going to add apart from DC and James Hunt.
It could be worse if it was called a SNOTY ;)
DC's successful?
do i spy jenson?
pretty much.
the plan is to say and do things we'll all regret in the morning.
the problem with both of those bbc intro's is they feature footage from this year which the bbc may not necessarily have the rights too. i can see them doing something more abstract, probably with a chequered flag and images from pre-season testing next year.
Oii! black flag for you
I should be pretty good at this game then
Hunt, Jim Clark and Graham Hill have all been runners-up too. F1 drivers have a pretty good record in the competition, actually.
Darn, and I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those dastardly kids.
:D
Favouritism .. how come Jolly gets his name in green text?
That's exactly what I was thinking ;-)
Has anyone used the live streaming on the BBC yet. Not bad actually. Watching Spooks on it now, only 2/3 secs behing the tv one. I like.
I'm environmentally friendly
:D
i've been using it, it's good, much better than anything itv has come up with :)
hahah just had a thought Jolly's in green cause he's the Jolly green giant ;)
Light years better than five
Haha!
Oh dear, don't let me loose at the christmas party, think what I'd be like after a drink
you just need to add a link btw. any one will do, but your own site is recommended.
Should we be rewarding that? :P
Roulette wheels and snakes are no longer en vogue I guess?
The FIA are on the next plane over
:D
i half expect the intro to feature the presenters.
Thanks for the advise me - I've updated my site link
Oh, that's why :) I always wondered what the green was for, I assumed it was for moderation or something
Very good Jolly :) http://www.jollygreengiant.co.uk/
see the challenge is to make it onto the top five "most talkative" list, and then you get a link to your site right beneath our page links.
well that's the plan anyway, reward the top contributors etc. mostly we wonder how the heck lou managed to write 1739 comments in the past 30 days!
Your setting a pretty low benchmark with ITV, you know. :P
Been on that list since the 11th, I feel proud.
It's addictive, this commenting stuff.
one
erm.... i'm not sure either.. i think it's the real time Doohickey, plus the i spy game, plus the live commenting. it all adds up you know ;)
two
three
(thinking i'd better stop before i get in trouble)
:D
I was pretty damn surprised when I first turned up on that list. I can't imagine what my total number of comments would be...
shhh, we're going to calculate that at the end of the year, but if you tell anyone it'll ruin the surprise.
I like the last 30 days cos if it had been since the start, I'd have no hope in hell
:D
Jolly going one, two, three, reminded me of a game I tried elsewhere (it didn't work, second time lucky?). You have to think of an F1 related fact for each number in turn starting at number 1.
Maybe it could work here?
For example 1 = the number on Lewis' car next season
I'm not feeling all too bright after my bad stomach earlier so I'm probably gonna sleep soon. Was fine earlier today and then I just felt rubbish. May as well say my goodbyes now and hope I feel better tomorrow. Night all.

it's my standby.
36- age of the most experienced driver ever in 2008
37 - age of DC when he retired
after that f1 minute is currently on 347, so we're good for a while yet.
36, number of fastest laps achieved by Benetton
and then we can start adding f1 minute and teh debriefs together...so then we're good up to 436 i think lol

But I knew that BRM bit myself. :)

Sudoku is Japanese for YOUR WASTING YOUR LIFE!!!
lol :P
Evening all... I actually totally disagree with Me from earlier and think that the BBC will go for exactly that kind of intro. ITV have done all the random intros it's time for the BBC to put the racing at the front and center (as they say).
Also I believe that the footage from previous years will be available to the BBC. ITV seemed to often times have BBC footage available to it when it was doing features. And I seem to remember somebody saying that was part of the agreement.
Just had a look at the updated version, it looks awesome :)
This year, it’s been a bit slow (as evidenced by the Spanish press getting bored about five weeks earlier than usual…)
Is this measured by how early they link De La Rosa to a drive with someone? {Mark Smith quoting Alianora La Canta - rather a lot of comments ago}
This is measured by how long it takes for an improbable rumour concerning a new Spanish driver getting into an F1 seat against all rational logic (last year this happened mid-December, and they did at least have the decency to wait until Roldan Rodruigez had driven something before the rumour-making began).
It's not. It's good for brain exercise :p
De La Rosa is rumoured to be the shock second driver for Honda, due to their financial difficulties, they cannot afford Barrichello, Di Grassi or Senna. {R.G. - the comment after Mark Smith's}
If they can't afford di Grassi, they can't afford to pay McLaren to take their best tester off them...
didn't realise that. i still think they'd want more ownership though. featuring murray (or his voice wouldn't hurt). and pre-season testing would give you new looking cars... new cars > new channel.
i don't see em wanting itv's hand-me-down's myself.
just to be difficult, i disagree... it looks dated.
already.
and there's months and months to go yet. by next october, it'll look prehistoric. the editor did good, but the approach is all wrong.
oh yer, its old. but i like it. plus you'd only have to see it once a program anyway so it wouldnt matter to much :P
twice a weekend, or more if they do practice.
tis a good job we don't watch f1 for the intros then ;)
It is important though. The Chain can tell you that :)
Link?
This sounds like a fun game. {Mark Smith - the comment after R.G.'s}
I like this game too, which I have previously dubbed the DIY rumour mill. The first time I played it I remember vividly - it was April 2006 and my fellow forumites and I were so fed up of anti-Midland rumours that we started turning the rumours back on themselves, resulting in a rather bizarre set of rumours from myself. Unfortunately the effect was ruined because Montoya had the nerve to actually quit F1 a couple of months later. Otherwise every single rumour would have been completely wrong.
Make up rumors often enough, and chances are, you'll get one right. :P
47 - the number of corners the new-for-2050 Azerbaijan Grand Prix will have in its one-mile length in an attempt to slow the cars down.
Make up rumors often enough, and chances are, you’ll get one right. {Journeyer - 2 comments ago}
I suppose you have a point. At least I know his quitting had nothing to do with Monteiro joining Toyota (which was the excuse I gave in the rumour).
Now i don't get scared by Dr Who usually, and i'm not scared now...as such...but the aliens attack when you blink....i may not sleep tonight....
One of the best episodes of the new Doctor Who, and the Doctor is hardly in it.
Yer it looks awesome, although i've made sure my door is shut ever tighter tonight...and will never look at stone angels in the same way again...
when i originally watched that episode i was babysitting with a friend at her local vicarage, and there was an angel in the graveyard beside the house. it freaked us out so much.
47 - number of race weekends Manfred Winklehock did.
Now i don’t get scared by Dr Who usually, and i’m not scared now…as such…but the aliens attack when you blink….i may not sleep tonight…. {Jon Waldock - 5 comments ago}
That was a great episode - the best one in Season 3, in fact.
What I love about it is that it used old-fashioned reveals and camera angles and didn't rely on CGI effects. That and the "don't blink" line.
What I love about it is that it used old-fashioned reveals and camera angles and didn’t rely on CGI effects. That and the “don’t blink” line. {Andy Taylor - previous comment}
Yeah - forcibly denying an involuntary physiological motion is always pretty scaring
Oh dear, its just too tempting.....another episode has to be watched....
I reckon it's Me with the Chumbawumba. ;)
Genius song that. :D Mitch is a musical god. ;)
Because?
