Ooh, hello there, come in, make yourself at home, although leave your shoes at the door please.

Can I get you a drink? How have you been?

Aren't you glad that yesterday is over and done with? Even the most ardent of April Fool's Day fans must get a little bit tired of trying to work out what is fact and what is fiction. I have written a little something about the day, although I must stress I am the complete opposite of an ardent fan.

Did you hear about Leigh? He's got some epic travelling coming up and all of it via public transport (and/or the kind graces of other travellers). I'm not so good at public transport myself. Trains are okay, but buses freak me out quite a lot. Still, with so much F3 stuff to ponder, travelling should be easy.

You're a bit of a fan of music, aren't you? Yesterday, BBC Four put on a whole evening of programmes dedicated to the institution that is/was Top of the Pops. For UK viewers, it started here and went on for several hours. What I did find interesting about the programme was a discussion Mr C and I got into about which decades you might have been good in - not neccessarily for the music itself but for other reasons. I said I quite enjoyed the seventies style side-to-side clicky-finger dancing and think I would have fitted right in there, but then would have to put up with Cliff Richard. Mr C was quick to point out that you have to put up with Cliff Richard in every decade, which I couldn't argue with.

Anyway, what have you got planned for the rest of the weekend? Presumably, if you are heading to the Boston area, you've already got plans to hook up with the rest of the SidepodBoston party for a... well, a great party.

Oh no, don't say you have to go already. Well, don't forget to check out these other two links before you go. One from Gavin who's got some great graphs, and one from RG who's highlighting a great charity initiative from an athlete.

It's been lovely chatting with you, and hey, you never know, I might see you in the comments.

Hi. My house alarm is going off and I can't turn it off. No local company wants to help and I've tried everything. Hoping the battery dies soon, apparently there's a 20 minute warning thing. It's been 22 minutes, seeing as I can't be productive I thought I'd tell you!

Isn't life grand, my neighbours love me!

  • Amy01/04/2011 at 23:38

    Where did get one?!

JB Hifi. A Whirlpool post said they got stock in last night at 8pm and they closed at 9 so I thought I'd check them out :D

When I went in they said they only had a 32GB White 3G showing as available but after they checked out the back they had lots of 32GB + 64GB Black wifi models. Score. I was only in there 10 minutes and they sold 4, plus the one guy who was like 'no I don't want to wait for you to check for black ones!' who ran away. Stupid guy.

  • Amy01/04/2011 at 23:40

but now I need app recommendations from all you already iPad/iPhone owning people because the store is really, really, really overwhelming.

    thats a bit extreme!

I do feel sorry for all the people who preordered online as soon as they were available who still have to wait 2-3 weeks for delivery. It seems more fair that their orders should be filled first.

It seems crazy that something like baseball can do this but F1 can't. Imagine if F1 had the same kind of tracking. You could see braking points, lines through corners, compare drivers or the same drivers in different conditions or different tyres.

Dilemma indeed. Mclaren guy thought they probably would do ours at Malaysia. You would think they will email though

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 09:05

Hello. For some silly reason I agreed to help Dad take apart a greenhouse and move it to his place, several miles away.

ahh yes i've already had an email to say they're doing one and i'm on it with a meeting time and place but they wanted my phone number too. Then they sent me a voucher 'no voucher, no tour'

I like that my new job came with access to the printer, it helps with travel :D

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 09:18

NEVER MOVE HOUSE ON YOUR OWN

You will die a slow and knackering death

Truth.. although I imagine its far easier moving the heavy box to and from a lift rather than to and from a car.

  • Amy02/04/2011 at 09:19

    Soooo tired!

heheh I actually think moving a short distance would be more annoying than moving a further away one. I'd be so annoyed if I had to pack everything I own to move it 100m. At least make it worth my while.

  • Maverick02/04/2011 at 09:19

Hello. For some silly reason I agreed to help Dad take apart a greenhouse and move it to his place, several miles away.

hehe, I havent actualy packed anything

I was standing in the lift with coathangers on my fingers :)

  • Maverick02/04/2011 at 09:21

I think i have heard the entire lift music loop 4 or 5 times now!

    try the stairs? ;-)

  • Amy02/04/2011 at 09:21

hehe, I havent actualy packed anything

that might be half your issue. moving things in boxes is probably easier than literally carrying everything, even if the packing and unpacking bit isn't the best fun.

  • Nick02/04/2011 at 09:22

Truth.. although I imagine its far easier moving the heavy box to and from a lift rather than to and from a car.

maybe, but i dont know loading up the car and then doing one trip seems easier than repeatedly going between the 2

  • Nick02/04/2011 at 09:22

14 floors! I would have done 1 trip!

  • Amy02/04/2011 at 09:23

You know that with the car in the middle you have to go back and forth to the car, and then drive and then go back and forth from the car with what you have in the car. So it's double the amount of back and forth and a drive

  • Maverick02/04/2011 at 09:52

You know that with the car in the middle you have to go back and forth to the car, and then drive and then go back and forth from the car with what you have in the car. So it's double the amount of back and forth and a drive

and there is the "car jigsaw puzzle" to deal with

    thats true

I guess because i only have 1 crate i have been packing-travelling-unpacking all in one trip which is why it seems harder.

on the plus side i wont have too much to do once its all up there

oooh thats so soon! I still haven't got my head around being there for some reason.

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 13:27

Off to look for a Mothers Day pressie in a minute.

She has specifically requested flowers so may I ask for some advice? #knowsnothingaboutflowers

Are flowers from a supermarket enough seeing as how they seem to look sort of proper nowadays instead of cheap and ragged like they used to? It would be Waitrose or Co-Op so not the tatty stuff. I fear a florist would charge a fortune or sell me a massive bunch. Also I need to keep them until Tuesday because she forgot it was Mothers Day tomorrow* which is very unlike her, and has gone to Cornwall.

    *only in some places.

So can I get them from the shop on Monday night or should I go to a florist, in which case I have to go now, and in which case will they stay alive that long?

  • Amy02/04/2011 at 13:27

So can I get them from the shop on Monday night or should I go to a florist, in which case I have to go now, and in which case will they stay alive that long?

I'd go on Monday night, flowers are better the newer they are.

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 13:31

I'd go on Monday night, flowers are better the newer they are.

Thanks. Lazy me says that too. :) Or even Tuesday on the way through from work. The other thing is all the Mothers Day stuff will have been removed by then so I'll get a card and some choc in a minute too.

Just I feel a bit of a stigma about supermarket flowers instead of florist ones. Maybe I'm thinking of petrol stations.. :) But I'm told to never spend lots of money on a present especially when it isn't a birthday.

I shall investigate in a minute.

  • Amy02/04/2011 at 13:32

Persuade some friends to come around in return for plying them afterwards with lots of beer.

Unfortunately they were all either hungover from a faithless gig last night or sat in a beer garden watching the cricket.

...I have now joined up with the latter :)

Yeah, it was more a matter of principle :)

Yeah, it was more a matter of principle :)

Not to mention it wasn't any cheaper being in the same building, so it would have been a bit of a rip off

  • Alex Andronov02/04/2011 at 14:45

Just I feel a bit of a stigma about supermarket flowers instead of florist ones. Maybe I'm thinking of petrol stations.. :) But I'm told to never spend lots of money on a present especially when it isn't a birthday.

Things like Tulips look pretty at the moment and last around a week from a supermarket.

The other thing you could do (but you want to think about transporting afterwards) is take a look at the vases they have there... Some of the vases can be pretty cheap so you could put the flowers into a vase and give the whole thing.

But note... Don't put any water in the vase as you'll be scuppered and taking them in and out of water is bad for them. They aren't in water when you buy them so putting them in a waterless vase will be fine. But this might be overkill

  • Steven Roy02/04/2011 at 14:46

God only knows, me living north of the States....

We in Tundraland have Mother's Day on the second Sunday In May, so the dates vary fromthe 8th to the 14th of May, depending on the Calender year. But I it would not surprise me that Mother's Day is similiar in concept to Mother's Day in the UK. We just throw in a May date to ensure reasonable warm weather... It makes the moms happier that way.

No ART GP anymore - with no guarantees for the future survival of the series, they said they couldn't continue.

I imagine commercially it is better for them to be with GP3, backing up the GP2 team. Amazing though, not too long ago some were saying Euro F3 was so strong it would put British F3 out of business.

The British F3 will keep going for now, if only because some drivers see it as a feeder to GP3 as opposed to GP2.

Euroseries just doesn't really fit anywhere within the GP2 / GP3 / World Series gaggle anymore.

Indeed. This is much better, but this can only end in one of two ways - either they get along very well, or they don't get along at all.

Still, the connection to Kyle does mean that if Kimi does well, Joe Gibbs might offer him a seat down the road.

British F3 to GP3 is a backward step. I listened to a few TFL episodes that I had missed during the week and Boyo Hiett was on one and he said Carlin had sold 6 seats in their F3 team but had not sold two GP3 seats. British F3 will outlast GP3

  • Leigh O'Gorman02/04/2011 at 16:53

When at the BF3 media day, I couldn't but overhear a few say GP3 was a strange entity in some disarray. Besides, 30 cars on track is a crazy notion for a formula like that.

Not awfully sure how much prep or learning really goes on either.

  • Leigh O'Gorman02/04/2011 at 16:54

By the way, I'll have a young driver prep post coming in about a half hour if anyone is still around.

It'll all boil down to who produces better talent. If GP3 ends up producing more F1 drivers than BF3 does, then I can see GP3 easily outlasting BF3.

F3 is more open technically and won't carry the same budgetary demands of being on the F1 bill, that's basically what they are paying for there.

  • Steven Roy02/04/2011 at 16:57

Not awfully sure how much prep or learning really goes on either.

F3 has always been the university for racing drivers and nothing has changed. There are only two reasons I can see for a driver to do GP3 is because they can't get the budget for a decent F3 drive or they have done F3 and failed to succeed or get a GP2 drive.

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 16:58

Interesting to note, though, that the last BF3 champion to win an F1 race... was 1991 champion Rubens Barrichello. They're not as good as they used to be, and that leaves them vulnerable.

Too early to tell for GP3. As for BF3, from what I can see on the current grid, only Jenson, Jaime and Sergio came from there to go into F1. Anyone else I missed?

  • Christine02/04/2011 at 17:04

Sorting out some pictures in iPhoto and investigating it's face recognition technology. It's asking me who the face on my Red Nose t-shirt is.

    Uh... William Shakespeare.

How weird that it recognised that!

  • Steven Roy02/04/2011 at 17:05

that and a win in GP3 is a win in front of the F1 paddock.

That argument has been used about various classes in the past and generally it is bogus. The F1 paddock may be in the same location but they are working and not watching all the support races. They may watch GP2 but that is all. The majority of the people GP3 drivers want to impress are too busy making sure their own cars, drivers, sponsors etc are as they would want to spend time watching GP3

Silly me, you're right. :D Must've been thinking of that BF3 he partly owned.

  • Leigh O'Gorman02/04/2011 at 17:10

Too early to tell for GP3. As for BF3, from what I can see on the current grid, only Jenson, Jaime and Sergio came from there to go into F1. Anyone else I missed?

    Rubens

    ;)

also Heikki, Karun, Bruno S (not the actor) and Sergio P

Disco Dan was also a champion in 2009 - also I can't imagine Vergne not being in F1 eventually

it just recognised christine's mum as her. hehee.

  • Journeyer02/04/2011 at 17:11

also Heikki, Karun, Bruno S (not the actor) and Sergio P

not counting Karun and Bruno as they're not on the grid at present. good point on Heikki, though.

That team is trying to set up a duel between Kimi and his manager Steve Robertson who was an F3 driver. Robertson reckons he will beat Kimi in an F3 car because Kimi never raced one. He may be a great manager but he was never that good a driver

How weird that it recognised that!

We have two really weird ones. There's one where Katherine took a picture of a building which had two round windows that looked like eyes and a bit of wiring that looked strangely as a mouth and even the computer thinks it is a face. And also a picture of a nephew of mine who it recognised as the same person in a picture of them a day old and now when even I couldn't do it!

  • Alex Andronov02/04/2011 at 17:26

He he. I think my brother got a much better picture than I did. But then it was his wedding :)

I never think of myself as posh but I guess that's because i'm not the poshest person I know - which is different.

sadly not.. we use a massive ladder thing in our studio..no fixed brackets. However our tutors did say that we could always just put the tripod on the table which works well..

Thank you :) Took a combined 18 seconds off personal-best times today, and I gather the reason I didn't end up with a full sweep of speeding tickets (I only did 2 races) was because the race where I got silver was already the fastest race for my stroke, length and gender.

Now going to relax by putting on the LMS qualifying on (I know the result but want to find out how it happened, seeing as I was doing front crawl at the time).

I was told there would be food. And I am quite full. But it isn't "meal full" so I don't feel satisfied which is odd.

He sort of is, sort of isn't. Can I help?

I imagine this means he's holding up Sidepodcast's Servers with his hands... he could type but it would mean holding the entire Sidepodcast system with just one hand and then if he lost balance for just one second...

I got a silver medal and a speeding ticket (probably the only situation you'll hear of anyone getting one for going at 2.5 miles per hour - I went over 15% faster than my entry time). The organisers were nice enough to give me a laminated certificate certifying my ticket, as well as giving everyone a free diary, pen and bag of sweets. It was one of the friendliest, best-organised galas I've ever had the pleasure of competing in and I've been doing them for 15 years.

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 22:10

    Ladies and gentlemen,

The current version of The F1 Archive is one year old today and sits just 20 views short of 30,000 visits.

With that, it's time for tea!!

    A well-earned tea I must say.

  • Alex Andronov02/04/2011 at 22:10

I heard something very interesting earlier... A conversation about MediaTemple's cloud servers. Apparently drupal users hate it because drupal likes to make tons of database requests at the same time and their system is specifically configured to react badly to it. Apparently they are working on some kind of different solution for it.

Mr C always says Guinness is basically a meal.

I once got locked out of my house and had to wait at the pub when I was just 16, 17, 18 (that's right - Ed)... And the kindly landlord heard my story and told me that I should drink Guiness rather than beer, "you don't know when you'll get another meal if you're locked out, so it better be Guiness, food in a glass".

Clustered databases are a bit tricky to do well.

Thank you :) It was a good gala for the team overall - everyone got some medals, one swimmer got their first gold medal ever, someone else got two golds and a bronze and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Probably just as well I didn't invite anyone to the gala though as viewing space was rather limited...

  • Janna02/04/2011 at 22:20

Alison, let me know when I get home, if you want to come & stay for the weekend to check out the drive between Pompey & S'oton & the neighbourhood of the place you want to live.

Southampton is a bit meh apart from the bit around the uni which is nice (I liked the park although never spent enough time there), what with going to the other uni. Portsmouth has lots of navy people around, seems nice in places and bad in others, I was told not to go there but always wondered if that was down to him being in Southampton and the two cities essentially hating each other.

I'm struggling to understand the concept of a speeding ticket for swimming

A typical swimming pool has only six lanes. Most events have more than six entrants. Putting more than one person in the same lane is... ...a bad idea, especially if one of them is someone like me.

What the organisers of most galas do to solve this is ask the team managers for a representative time it takes each entrant to do the specified event. Mostly previous galas are used as evidence, but there is a specific procedure for coaches to generate that time for someone who's not swum before or recently undergone a major change in how fast they swim. This is the "entry time".

The "entry times" for all swimmers are sorted in order. This pits swimmers against those people closest to them in speed - at least in theory. In order to work, the "entry times" have to be real and correspond reasonably closely with the swimmer's genuine speed on the day of the swim. Otherwise there's a risk that an unscrupulous team manager could submit a time much slower than the one their swimmer can do (perhaps getting the swimmer to deliberately underperform at a gala, or fake an injury/illness to provide an artificially slow time). That would put the swimmer against much slower competitors and give them an easy and unfair win (because each race within each event has separate medals awarded until the borderline-international level).

To avoid this, there's a rule at most galas that anyone going more than a set amount faster than their "entry time" (15% at most galas including this one, occasionally 20%) is disqualified and denied a medal. They are given a "speeding ticket" to indicate their time was genuine and done without breaking any technical regulations (such as walking part of the distance) but removed from the results to prevent cheating from creeping into the system.

The distinction is important. A "speeding ticket" is valid for use as an "entry time" in any gala, whereas any other form of disqualification is not.

The amusing thing is that due to the rule deterring cheating of this type, getting a "speeding ticket" is almost as highly prized as a gold medal. The rules mean that people tend to be entered on their personal-best time unless there's a good reason not to do so. Breaking a personal best at any time is good, but breaking it by over 15% tends to result in a lot of cheering and hand-shaking from your team... ...even though usually a swimmer will have nothing but a time to show for it.

  • Alianora La Canta02/04/2011 at 22:48

I gather she broke a record?

Ah in that case well done, I am obviously slow tonight

It's probably the only walk of life where speeding tickets are considered desirable, and I did mention to one of the team assistants I might have trouble explaining this to my friends later on as a result...

  • Pat W02/04/2011 at 22:55
