Ooh, hello there, come in, make yourself at home, although leave your shoes at the door please.
Can I get you a drink? How have you been?
Aren't you glad that yesterday is over and done with? Even the most ardent of April Fool's Day fans must get a little bit tired of trying to work out what is fact and what is fiction. I have written a little something about the day, although I must stress I am the complete opposite of an ardent fan.
Did you hear about Leigh? He's got some epic travelling coming up and all of it via public transport (and/or the kind graces of other travellers). I'm not so good at public transport myself. Trains are okay, but buses freak me out quite a lot. Still, with so much F3 stuff to ponder, travelling should be easy.
You're a bit of a fan of music, aren't you? Yesterday, BBC Four put on a whole evening of programmes dedicated to the institution that is/was Top of the Pops. For UK viewers, it started here and went on for several hours. What I did find interesting about the programme was a discussion Mr C and I got into about which decades you might have been good in - not neccessarily for the music itself but for other reasons. I said I quite enjoyed the seventies style side-to-side clicky-finger dancing and think I would have fitted right in there, but then would have to put up with Cliff Richard. Mr C was quick to point out that you have to put up with Cliff Richard in every decade, which I couldn't argue with.
Anyway, what have you got planned for the rest of the weekend? Presumably, if you are heading to the Boston area, you've already got plans to hook up with the rest of the SidepodBoston party for a... well, a great party.
Oh no, don't say you have to go already. Well, don't forget to check out these other two links before you go. One from Gavin who's got some great graphs, and one from RG who's highlighting a great charity initiative from an athlete.
It's been lovely chatting with you, and hey, you never know, I might see you in the comments.
Hoooray Saturday
A drink would be great thanks
A common theme in my flat
i have guinness to pay homage to those in boston for the weekend. it only happened because bassano wouldn't let it go, so this one is for him and everyone who's made more effort than us :)
Have to say I really like the way that post is written
Very nice daily Christine
:)
Hi. My house alarm is going off and I can't turn it off. No local company wants to help and I've tried everything. Hoping the battery dies soon, apparently there's a 20 minute warning thing. It's been 22 minutes, seeing as I can't be productive I thought I'd tell you!
Isn't life grand, my neighbours love me!
beat it with a broom.
I need a bigger stick.
Cut the blue wire
No, no the red wire
Or is it the black wire
Oh Silence!
Glorious silence!!
Can't remember what Jon did when somebody pulled the red cord in his flat.
after installing one app I think the iPad was a good choice :D
I think you mean the green wire
you have the ipad2? i only left the comments for half an hour?!
I knew it was a coloured wire
Steven, quick question. What besides Justin is a good stream to watch baseball, specifically Rays vs Orioles?
you're all a terrible influence.
you do know you're going to spend the same amount filling it with new content? it is the Apple way.
Try http://www.firstrowsports.eu/ or http://www.myp2p.eu/
I go to those first for any sports stream
i keep telling people it drives me nuts!
you should get the kindle app and compare.
it is syncing as we speak. I am going to take iPad to Malaysia instead of Alistair so I hope its good (sorry Alistair but if I take iPad to airport I get 10% of the cost back)
I feel the smart cover has already solved every typing issue I may have thought I'd have.
the "leave your shoes at the door" line reminded me of a song. Thought it was Saint Etienne, but eventually it was someone else, and it was nothing to do with leaving your shoes at the door
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjEAV0RWJxQ
i need to try that. also need to know how commenting compares.
Where did get one?!
JB Hifi. A Whirlpool post said they got stock in last night at 8pm and they closed at 9 so I thought I'd check them out :D
When I went in they said they only had a 32GB White 3G showing as available but after they checked out the back they had lots of 32GB + 64GB Black wifi models. Score. I was only in there 10 minutes and they sold 4, plus the one guy who was like 'no I don't want to wait for you to check for black ones!' who ran away. Stupid guy.
but now I need app recommendations from all you already iPad/iPhone owning people because the store is really, really, really overwhelming.
Hehehe. Lucky you. Maybe I need another trip to Melbourne
I wonder if sidepodcast can crowd source me an ipad2
free or paid?
if paid, try zinio -> f1 racing (assuming it's available globally)
thats a bit extreme!
I do feel sorry for all the people who preordered online as soon as they were available who still have to wait 2-3 weeks for delivery. It seems more fair that their orders should be filled first.
Goodreader for PDFs. You can download then direct to the app,
preferrably free, but I'll get a few really good paid ones initially :)
I am trying to boycott that magazine, but its not working. I'll see if it's available here.
store excitement = more publicity for apple. they get none from online orders.
ooh you've just reminded me, did McLaren send you a "voucher" that you had to take to your paddock tour?
essential for gp+
I do not subscribe and do not plan to #sorryjoe
f1 live timing, for when you don't have fanvision.
i use ibooks on ipod touch, does ok, but can't download straight to device
garageband if you fancy hitting some drums.
But that's only iPhone right?
and wordlens for translating spanish wednesday when you get stuck :)
Hello, I am here to reform the exorcism on those "spirits" residing in your (wine) cellar....
nope. AMAZING on the ipad.
there was a guy in the Clark stand with it on his ipad. Looked good.
I want an ipad2 and I want it now!

if you've already got an iPad one I wouldn't bother upgrading. The differences aren't toooo much from what I can tell.
Oh! Try out Project. It is a magazine app, and this month issue is free
Photo booth. Say no more.
ooh.
I also need the ATP World Tour app just in case watching Roger lose on TV isn't enough. Gah.
I've already worked out thats one feature I'll never use :)
does this thing not multitask? Do I really have to sit here and watch it download my entire Kindle library?
If you ever need to entertain children, that is the app to have
sure it does, click the home button?
that makes sense, thankfully I entertain children never :D
*tap. whatever,
oh. How can I see what apps are already open then?
double-tap the home button.
ahhh. I tried the long press and hold as thats how my phone works. I haven't double tapped anything in a long time :D
um...how do I close an app then?
Gosh I'm such an apple newbie :D
Fruit Ninja, Skype, iMovie (although cameras on that are not that good tbh), PS Express, Audioboo, NASA app, UStream, Justin TV, Posterous, Angry Birds and Tiny Wings.
Too many apps to recommend
oh scratch that i found it :D
you don't. you can tap and hold until it jiggles, then delete if you insist. but it doesn't work that way.
thank you!
have never worked that out, until now, cheers.
:)
I think I'll go shopping to take my mind off new toys
dangerous!
oh my, the f1 app is $40? I might wait to buy that :)
the longer you wait, the less value it has surely? although you don't need it until after malaysia.
yes, after malaysia is what i mean. Because an extra $40 on top of what I've already spent today feels expensive right now, but in two weeks time it'll feel like nothing :)
ooh f1 racing is available for $49.20 a year. It's tempting because it looks so pretty in digital. But I was trying to cancel my subscription.
i think christine/me were planning to review it this weekend. not sure it'll help you that much though, but i like what i see so far.
if your review is good i'll wait for my paper subscription to run out then i'll probably get it. i have found all kinds of other magazines that are the sort that i'd like to read though but never do because buying them is an effort and i don't want to keep them once i've read them.
this app might just bankrupt me.
zinio? yeah, sorry about that. just like kindle though.
the selection of magazines on kindle is very poor outside the us though, im only subscribed to one and its rubbish compared to its print counterpart, i only stay subscribed because its about $1.90 a month :D
only $10 for a year of readers digest? I LOVE READERS DIGEST
ooooh
you're gonna run out free time before you run out of money :)
I have an 8 hour flight to fill in 4 days time :)
Did you manage to like yourself on any of the iphones in the Apple store?
I wasn't in an apple store :(
I thought that was where you got the ipad. You really should visit the Apple store every day and make everyone like you :D
oooh wallpaper magazine.
They really do sell magazines about everything don't they.
may or may not contain information about actual wallpaper*
Melbourne is not as nice as Sydney, theres no Apple store in the city, just two in big old malls in the suburbs that were built back in the days before having public transport links was considered a good idea. Hence why I've never been to either :(
heheh
Steven, thank you. Watching the Rays streaming now. If you can help them get some runs, that'd help too.
I would love to help but that would just encourage them to challenge the Yankees again. They got way too close last year
Way too close? We won the AL East.
Exactly
Well you now have to worry about the Orioles as well, they are strong
I really haven't paid any attention to baseball since the end of the season. I don't even know more than a couple of players that the Yankees have signed.
I think we managed to get a new baseball fan last night but he was more interested in the code used in the MLB website.
http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-31-march-2011#comment-1056749
;)
The O's got a new manager last year, Buck Schowalter (sp) in Aug and they immediately stopped being the doormat for the AL East.
Never heard of him but if he has turned them round we will be hearing more of him
They have upgraded the baseball coverage since yesterday
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2011_04_01_balmlb_tbamlb_1&mode=gameday
what the...?
free live streaming?
Just it.
Joe's team are batting
ahh, highlights.
You can pay for live stream or each team's radio.
There are free streams around
our tv has an mlb app built-in too, just thought it might be on the site free.
The front page of the site shows all the options available next to each game. There are normally about twice as many games in a typical day
the graphs and things are crazy, i need to study this properly when i get a minute. had no idea it was so tech advanced.
It seems crazy that something like baseball can do this but F1 can't. Imagine if F1 had the same kind of tracking. You could see braking points, lines through corners, compare drivers or the same drivers in different conditions or different tyres.
Good morning everyone.
I just watched the BBC 4 documentry 'Grand Prix: The Killer Years'
Wow, learned a lot. Lots I already knew, but some of it is really hard to watch. I recommend it to everyone.
Hi all
After dinner drinks with Scott
No further contact from local contingent tonight
hey bassano, anthony is waiting on your call.
A lot of us have seen it and a few have recommended it.
Because you did not answer a Guinness headping
I only just found it on iPlayer
Do I have his number?
*checks email*
Thanks for the heads up
i haven't seen it yet. i should try this weekend.
There is another on about the 60 year history of F1.
Look on the A to Z under F
Wow, that's sloppy of me
It's only available on iPlayer until Sunday night
ta
Just watching that one now
Not quite as dramatic
I would hope not
These people are crazy ;) I'm in a bar. How did that happen?
you've met up??
I believe if Christine were around she would say keep up
Do keep up! :)
We just had a lovely meal at Legal Seafoods, great food. Now in the bar with WiFi goodness.
i leave the comments for a bit and stuff happens. people need to stop doing that.
You need a variation on the post update comment. Every half hour generate a comment that list significant events
comment voting.
or rating, i guess would be a better word. i did check the boston thread, but it must've been in the daily. yay for meeting scott though.
Now I know I should be asleep. I read that as 'Commence vomitting' Something very wrong with me
i've only had a few drinks :)
Interesting.
I haven't had any, I'm allergic to alcohol
i best have one for you too then?
If you wouldn't mind. Thanks!
a pleasure. guinness or grolsh?
ooh - neither. When I used to drink, I was more of a Vodka man!
People still drink Grolsch? Does it still have the funny top on the bottle?
erm... closest i got is rosé.
sadly not :(
I thought opening the bottles was the whole point of Grolsch
i'll get christine to source some of those.
They still do them
http://www.grolsch.co.uk/home.html
Enjoyed that.
Right off to sleep now, Goodnight all!
night chap.
Night Simon
that's the ones. although i never intend to put the lid back on an open beer.
I think you are meant to do it when you finish
oooooooh.
must sleep. have a good night/morning all.
Night Mr C
night from Boston
Kinda struggling a bit now so will sign off. Have put plans in place to have more coverage tomorrow. G'night
Good night

Anyone see that Kimi is jumping to NASCAR!!!?? :-/ (sorry if this was already raised)

Grolsch is usually the official beverage of Giggles Radio
Actually I haven't read today's daily yet... Good point SU!
hooray I just downloaded the app for my phone that turns it into a hotspot. iPad everywhere!
oooh it worked. that is very cool. and very handy for malaysia :)
Saved my life in melboune. Stupid useless hotel wifi
flatmate was convinced i couldnt do it because 'thats only an iphone thing'
ha!
Nokia FTW I guess!
It works well with phone eoo :-)
Phone eoo?
Um, iPhone too.
I need to get a cheapo Malaysian sim so roaming doesn't kill me but I gave mclaren my aus number. dilemma!
Dilemma indeed. Mclaren guy thought they probably would do ours at Malaysia. You would think they will email though
Hello. For some silly reason I agreed to help Dad take apart a greenhouse and move it to his place, several miles away.
ahh yes i've already had an email to say they're doing one and i'm on it with a meeting time and place but they wanted my phone number too. Then they sent me a voucher 'no voucher, no tour'
I like that my new job came with access to the printer, it helps with travel :D
NEVER MOVE HOUSE ON YOUR OWN
You will die a slow and knackering death
you're not even moving out of the building!
Soooo tired!
I think i have heard the entire lift music loop 4 or 5 times now!
Truth.. although I imagine its far easier moving the heavy box to and from a lift rather than to and from a car.
heheh I actually think moving a short distance would be more annoying than moving a further away one. I'd be so annoyed if I had to pack everything I own to move it 100m. At least make it worth my while.
Now THAT is moving house - not taking a pot plant up a few floors :-)
I would offer to help but you know...
:)
I should probably go and wait outside as I was supposed to be picked up 5mins ago.. See you later.
hehe, I havent actualy packed anything
I was standing in the lift with coathangers on my fingers :)
try the stairs? ;-)
that might be half your issue. moving things in boxes is probably easier than literally carrying everything, even if the packing and unpacking bit isn't the best fun.
maybe, but i dont know loading up the car and then doing one trip seems easier than repeatedly going between the 2
14 floors! I would have done 1 trip!
but then you'd not have to move any of your clothes because none would fit anymore. bonus!
I would need a death shroud!
The curtain man has arrived to take them down and put them back up. Luckily this is a service the building provide so i dont need to do it! :D
cant they just leave curtains in every apartment? gosh.
you should have hung all your clothes on the curtains then
You have to buy your own, mine are like 3 metres long because i couldnt be bothered to have them hemmed
Hahaha
just poking my head in to see how the site looks. C
Couldn't make it to Boston cause I couldn't get the time off work. But they made it up to me in a cash boonus, so I have a new Barnes & Noble color Nook. PutAndroid on it andlooking/commenting thru Firefox on it.
I think Alison may be a saint :D
You know that with the car in the middle you have to go back and forth to the car, and then drive and then go back and forth from the car with what you have in the car. So it's double the amount of back and forth and a drive
and there is the "car jigsaw puzzle" to deal with
thats true
I guess because i only have 1 crate i have been packing-travelling-unpacking all in one trip which is why it seems harder.
on the plus side i wont have too much to do once its all up there
Morning all.
aloha
How's the iPad?
I am commenting from it now. I heart smart cover
Does the kindle app come with books or did I download pride and prejudice in my sleep?
Ooh, it's been a while since I got it, but I don't remember it doing that.
it loaded up with that and treasure island and I am 100% sure they're not books I chose to have :)
I am finding this hard to read on though so alistair can feel safe.
Cool. Recommended apps:
Flipboard, Zen Bound, Boxcar
Greetings all
danke
Think it's already been mentioned in the last day or 2 but Goodreader is essential.
that I already have downloaded but am yet to need. I'm sure it'll be handy one day :)
Hehe. I don't have that one, not sure I'd need it either.
I don't think I'll need any of the social network apps that put things in one place. Maybe it's odd but I hate having twitter and Facebook together

Hello all. Blue skies & sunshine today. Woohoo
Goodreader is a docs reader/storage
I download GP+ straight to it
I decided to download all my flight itinerary PDFs into it just so I can say it's used :)
Discovering my phone can be a hotspot was my greatest moment of the day. Now I can iPad comment from my hotel without paying their ridiculous wifi charges.
Final trip!
Then Beer time :)
woot!
Oh wait Nick... I think you were actually meant to move to the flat next door not the one 11 floors up
Greenhouse disassembled, now home for lunch. :)
sounds like everyone is having a productive day :)
I'm helping somebody with their computer remotely
But, but... Twitter says you are still 50% complete.
Not sure what everyone else has got but it is lovely and sunny and warm here, probably in a few weeks I'll be used to it but right now I'm all post-winter and can't stay inside :)
Off to look for a Mothers Day pressie in a minute.
i just had an intense midnight craving for fairy bread. that was odd.
You clearly don't have a huge amount of stuff to only require one car trip.. either that or i've got way too much..
I had to unplug the router this morning so no updates today unfortunately.
The furniture guys came early so I didn't have time to setup the laptop with a cable connection
Haha the flat next door is the same size and has the same view, I would defiantly not have moved there!
you didn't even move your own furniture? what are you complaining about then!
You have furniture guys to move it within the same building??
Definitely get the paid timing app.
I said I'd wait but I downloaded it already heheh. Oh how I wait for the credit card bill.
Might as well get it out of the way in one hit :)
w00t!
indeed :)
Practice one will start in 5 days, 12 hours, 35 minutes, 17 seconds.
oooh thats so soon! I still haven't got my head around being there for some reason.
She has specifically requested flowers so may I ask for some advice? #knowsnothingaboutflowers
Are flowers from a supermarket enough seeing as how they seem to look sort of proper nowadays instead of cheap and ragged like they used to? It would be Waitrose or Co-Op so not the tatty stuff. I fear a florist would charge a fortune or sell me a massive bunch. Also I need to keep them until Tuesday because she forgot it was Mothers Day tomorrow* which is very unlike her, and has gone to Cornwall.
*only in some places.
So can I get them from the shop on Monday night or should I go to a florist, in which case I have to go now, and in which case will they stay alive that long?
I'd go on Monday night, flowers are better the newer they are.
Thanks. Lazy me says that too. :) Or even Tuesday on the way through from work. The other thing is all the Mothers Day stuff will have been removed by then so I'll get a card and some choc in a minute too.
Just I feel a bit of a stigma about supermarket flowers instead of florist ones. Maybe I'm thinking of petrol stations.. :) But I'm told to never spend lots of money on a present especially when it isn't a birthday.
I shall investigate in a minute.
mums love any flowers. i also love any flowers and i'm not a mum :)
:)
This is true, they do.
It would have been physically impossible! I moovwd everything I could carry on my own myself
things small enough to carry are not the hard part of moving. you've lost all my sympathy :D
They weren't small things! Big LCD was verry heavy!
its not the same as the image i had in my head of you manouvering a sofa into a lift :D
Persuade some friends to come around in return for plying them afterwards with lots of beer.
Morning. Thanks for the link :)
Watching the cricket at Trini Andy's house, had Thai food for lunch and we are drinking strong Swedish beer. So it's all good :)
Oh how cheeky.. or forgetful. I wondered why I had no money in my main account after I got paid yesterday. Car insurance was taken from there not the credit card like I thought.
Epic. Jealous. :)
Unfortunately they were all either hungover from a faithless gig last night or sat in a beer garden watching the cricket.
...I have now joined up with the latter :)
Also theythink I am cheap for not hireing movers, but I refused to do so in the same building!
Considering you live in Dubai where labour costs are quite cheap, they probably have a point ;)
Yeah, it was more a matter of principle :)
Not to mention it wasn't any cheaper being in the same building, so it would have been a bit of a rip off
Things like Tulips look pretty at the moment and last around a week from a supermarket.
The other thing you could do (but you want to think about transporting afterwards) is take a look at the vases they have there... Some of the vases can be pretty cheap so you could put the flowers into a vase and give the whole thing.
But note... Don't put any water in the vase as you'll be scuppered and taking them in and out of water is bad for them. They aren't in water when you buy them so putting them in a waterless vase will be fine. But this might be overkill
What has happened to this site in the last 12 hours? Tulips?
Absolutely nothing wrong with supermarket flowers
What's wrong with Tulips?
You started adding friends on facebook :P
Thanks, that's a good idea..
But did you factor in the OPPORTUNITY COTST of you moving everything yourself versus the INTEREST GAINED by you enjoying cricket at a beer garden with your friends sooner?
:)
Flowers are an unusual topic for this site. Of course there is a tulip connection to motorsport. There used to be (may still be) the Tulip Rally and then there are tulip diagrams
I'll buy beer at the same time to offset it?
Katherine said, "wouldn't you just take them out of the supermarket wrapper and wrap them in some tissue paper and ribbon"?
And I replied, "he's a guy, I don't think he probably has that stuff". But if you do that would work well...
And you can always do the neat thing with a pair of scissors and some ribbon to make it curly
Hehe, the beer is tasting all the more sweeter now though :D
i have gaffa tape?
Phew
I have come to expect, over time, everything to appear eventually on Sidepodcast :)
Awesome!
#sameperson
Speed tape?
Tulips and Racing? Is Zandroovt coming back to F1 ? TARZANCURVE !!!!!
do you know how hard it is to get hold of that? not wasting that on my mum.
Flowers aren't that unusual, we do talk about Lotus...
:D
tsk!
CHRISTINE'S MOTHER IN LAW!!!!!!
Sadly not. Unfortunately I doubt we will ever again see the likes of Villeneuve going all the way round the outside of Jones.
Apologies for interrupting florist hour
:)
I think I've seen them come with that already..
I've got birthday wrapping paper and a lot of different tapes.
I bet you I can't. :)
I'm also going out to play skittles tonight for a work thing, that counts too.
All this talk about Mothers and flowers has left me thinking if I have joined "The MUM Show".......
I can't believe I am saying this but if you go into a card shop you can get a ribbon that looks like a normal ribbon but you pull the end and it magically forms into rosettte/bow type thing
Is it mothers day in the states it is that different?
We've broken Steven :)
You just need to get regular ribbon and take the flat edge of the pair of scissors and run it along the ribbon
Who is this?
Can someone verify this is actualy the person they claim to be?!
Not very #mfc compared to magic ribbon or whatever it is called
Here, have a beer.
If I go to a card shop I'll be judged by the till assistant, they put those tills on a raised level above customers for a reason, I swear they have a gavel somewhere.
I can do all of this practical stuff... I seem to remember having made a tin foil dog from toilet paper rolls (and tin foil) once on this very site.
#shouldhavebeenonbluepeter
#MFC would be not to give flowers at all
Send them from a website, you can do that.. but probably not advisable when you live in the same town
Is it mothers day in the states it is that different?
God only knows, me living north of the States....
We in Tundraland have Mother's Day on the second Sunday In May, so the dates vary fromthe 8th to the 14th of May, depending on the Calender year. But I it would not surprise me that Mother's Day is similiar in concept to Mother's Day in the UK. We just throw in a May date to ensure reasonable warm weather... It makes the moms happier that way.
ipod shuffle?
I should go and do the recce and get a card, thanks for your help. :)
Afternoon peeps
>Afternoon peeps
Morning Bassano, Morning. Boston is in the EDT time zone. you still have 30 minites to go....
Morning Jordan ;)
Afternoon
Morning Bassano...
You would not want to be 30 minutes to an event would you, you are representing Sidepodcast. They don't do the silly "show up early stuff...." :P
30 minutes late would be a proper Sidepodcast enterence....
.and done. I may have got some anyway, the special stickers talked me into it, they won't be there Monday! If they die I'll get more.
Next thing..
yo folks
Hello.
Just looking up the LMS qualifying times, don't they headline some of the BF3 dates this year? That's a good reason to go. :)
Not LMS as far as I see - their biggest support is the Spa 24 Hours which is GT isn't it?
Yes it is. I thought they'd be at the 6 Hours instead.
Not as far I know. I haven't been sent any forms about LMS anyway.
I did a non-motorsport post:
Something for the Weekend: Beastie Boys "Sabotage" (warning: vaguely poor language!)
http://easymusicfordifficultears.blogspot.com/2011/04/something-for-weekend-beastie-boys.html
Ah maybe I'm thinking of Euroseries
Which only appears to have 12 entrants at Ricard this weekend!
Just had a look at Wiki - 2 of the 9 Euroseries rounds support LMS. The rest are supporting DTM.
No ART GP anymore - with no guarantees for the future survival of the series, they said they couldn't continue.
I imagine commercially it is better for them to be with GP3, backing up the GP2 team. Amazing though, not too long ago some were saying Euro F3 was so strong it would put British F3 out of business.
They said the same thing in the 80s
The British F3 will keep going for now, if only because some drivers see it as a feeder to GP3 as opposed to GP2.
Euroseries just doesn't really fit anywhere within the GP2 / GP3 / World Series gaggle anymore.
Kimi has signed with Kyle Busch. That is a very odd combination
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90407
They should both feed to GP2 or WSR.
Saw that earlier - one can't help, but think the Gillett connection was a red herring throw people off
True, although I just feel that WSR's future is still a little vague at the moment.
Without Renault it'll collapse, they can't do free events any more
Indeed. This is much better, but this can only end in one of two ways - either they get along very well, or they don't get along at all.
Still, the connection to Kyle does mean that if Kimi does well, Joe Gibbs might offer him a seat down the road.
I hope it works, that's a good team to go with. Not that I'm a NASCAR expert all of a sudden. But they have won 2 of the last 3 races.
#nothere, BTW. :D
I think he'll be fine, but success won't come overnight. Look how tough Montoya had it for ages.
British F3 to GP3 is a backward step. I listened to a few TFL episodes that I had missed during the week and Boyo Hiett was on one and he said Carlin had sold 6 seats in their F3 team but had not sold two GP3 seats. British F3 will outlast GP3
When at the BF3 media day, I couldn't but overhear a few say GP3 was a strange entity in some disarray. Besides, 30 cars on track is a crazy notion for a formula like that.
Not awfully sure how much prep or learning really goes on either.
By the way, I'll have a young driver prep post coming in about a half hour if anyone is still around.
It'll all boil down to who produces better talent. If GP3 ends up producing more F1 drivers than BF3 does, then I can see GP3 easily outlasting BF3.
F3 is more open technically and won't carry the same budgetary demands of being on the F1 bill, that's basically what they are paying for there.
GP3 makes absolutely no sense. If Carlin can't sell two drives the series is doomed.
F3 has always been the university for racing drivers and nothing has changed. There are only two reasons I can see for a driver to do GP3 is because they can't get the budget for a decent F3 drive or they have done F3 and failed to succeed or get a GP2 drive.
Oh wow apparently I have to leave in an hour already, that was quick. Best shower and stuff.
There is absolutely no way GP3 can produce more F1 drivers than F3
that and a win in GP3 is a win in front of the F1 paddock.
Interesting to note, though, that the last BF3 champion to win an F1 race... was 1991 champion Rubens Barrichello. They're not as good as they used to be, and that leaves them vulnerable.
Not forgetting though that Jenson Button never became BF3 champion in 1999, but finished 3rd overall.
Valid point. Still a long time ago, though.
Just had a look: He finished behind Marc Hynes and Luciano Burti..........
Err... yeah. At least Burti got into F1.
...for a few races at least
Too early to tell for GP3. As for BF3, from what I can see on the current grid, only Jenson, Jaime and Sergio came from there to go into F1. Anyone else I missed?
Sorting out some pictures in iPhoto and investigating it's face recognition technology. It's asking me who the face on my Red Nose t-shirt is.
Uh... William Shakespeare.
How weird that it recognised that!
That argument has been used about various classes in the past and generally it is bogus. The F1 paddock may be in the same location but they are working and not watching all the support races. They may watch GP2 but that is all. The majority of the people GP3 drivers want to impress are too busy making sure their own cars, drivers, sponsors etc are as they would want to spend time watching GP3
Interesting. I guess a lot of them did Euro F3 rather than British F3. Seems incredible that no-one who has won that championship in 20 years has won a race
That is odd. F3 cars should be ideally suited to Button's driving style
A LOT did Euro F3. Off the top of my head, I can think of Vettel, Massa, Hamilton, Rosberg, and Raikkonen.
It was his rookie season. I think Hynes and Burti had been in BF3 before 99.
Impressive that it recognised a face from a print
Raikkonen never raced in F3. He went from FRenault to F1
That would make sense.
Silly me, you're right. :D Must've been thinking of that BF3 he partly owned.
Rubens
;)
also Heikki, Karun, Bruno S (not the actor) and Sergio P
Disco Dan was also a champion in 2009 - also I can't imagine Vergne not being in F1 eventually
*BF3 team he partly owned.
oops. :D
it just recognised christine's mum as her. hehee.
not counting Karun and Bruno as they're not on the grid at present. good point on Heikki, though.
It doesn't recognise me with a red nose but it does recognise William Shakespeare. Humph.
I counted them mainly because they competed last, even though they are currently reserves
anyway, should really go to bed. night folks!
night journeyer
:D
http://yfrog.com/h847srbj
That team is trying to set up a duel between Kimi and his manager Steve Robertson who was an F3 driver. Robertson reckons he will beat Kimi in an F3 car because Kimi never raced one. He may be a great manager but he was never that good a driver
Shocking
Night Journeyer
We have two really weird ones. There's one where Katherine took a picture of a building which had two round windows that looked like eyes and a bit of wiring that looked strangely as a mouth and even the computer thinks it is a face. And also a picture of a nephew of mine who it recognised as the same person in a picture of them a day old and now when even I couldn't do it!
I remember Mr C accusing me once of being the poshest person he knew. And after this whole Hello thing I have to admit it's looking that way.
You're an actual famous person now.
Does it recognise the Hitler house?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1372347/Was-fate-Incredible-history-Hitler-house-survived-Nazi-bombing.html
He he. I think my brother got a much better picture than I did. But then it was his wedding :)
I never think of myself as posh but I guess that's because i'm not the poshest person I know - which is different.
It's picked out an actual owl. Well, I suppose owl's have faces.
If it identified it as the famous sidepodcast owl I would be really impressed
Is it the owl that caused the problem in the podcast? Because that owl is famous.
Hahaa - I wonder how much the guy got for that story
You mean this one, Steven ?

Ladies and gentlemen,
The current version of The F1 Archive is one year old today and sits just 20 views short of 30,000 visits.
With that, it's time for tea!!
Well done Leigh
Cheers Steven
Yes I have SU! Thanks for the reminder though :)
Congrats Leigh
we now need to blog more :)
It's a great feature... I just like chatting with SU!
hehehe.
SU reminded me to read the excellent daily by Christine today... I'd just dived straight into the comments like a lemon and then along came SU to remind me... Good old SU :)
cheers alex

Evenings.
Watching BTTF on ITV2+1. Fell asleep earlier so missed the normal showing.
#thankgodsforplus1channels
have i ever mentioned how much i love lightroom? it must be the best thing adobe ever made in their whole history. ever.
it's incredible. Becomes exceptional in the studio tho. Tethering with it is a rather beautiful thing. :)
.. also i'm writing the daily (early i know! :o ) does anyone have anything they would like me to include?
I love that ginormous speaker...
#notanhourlatetotheBTTFparty
Hello?
As in Hello magazine?
Hello?
The fact Karun Chandhok is a little bit happy India won the Cricket World Cup?
true enough. wanted to do some tethering today but couldn't get the camera fixed high enough and had to use my arms. any suggestions for adjustable SLR brackets that can position cameras near the ceiling?
Giggles radio :)
Check twitter
I really should throw a BTTF party one day.
Is it a bit heavy for the magnetic gorilla grip thing?
ooh, they do an slr grip, but i don't have that one.
You should. But at what time would you set for the beginning of the party?
sadly not.. we use a massive ladder thing in our studio..no fixed brackets. However our tutors did say that we could always just put the tripod on the table which works well..
why was your brother's wedding in hello magazine?
ohh! shall do.
i'm so pleased someone asked. :)
Speed tape
i might want to get the camera back off of the ceiling one day though.
It's in the reader's bit (I didn't know they had one). I think my brother's mother in law submitted it.
Erm... 20:15?
:D
cool. next question... why were you reading hello magazine?
:)
Good thinking. I was thinking it wouldn't matter as all of the guests would just travel through time to it or something.
I was sent an e-mail my brother telling me about it!
Someone is bound to still be fashionably late though.
Matt Smith?
sorry we're late, had to stop for plutonium?
Bow ties are cool!
Was the subject of the e-mail:
Hello!
Gotta be disappointing after that though when you realize they arent actually saying hello..
Indeed!
Or... had to wait for lightning?
The problem would be some people would be having to leave early because their hands were starting to fade away!
That can really put a crimp on the evening!
By the way you must have this party!
I could serve hydrating pizza and fruit that comes down from the ceiling.
I did reply to him saying, "when you bought it, 'was it me you're looking for'"
In this country you'd be waiting for a long time. Think plutonium's something I can siphon from Sizewell. :)
@Lou: taunting Crofty at the same time (he picked Sri Lanka to win): https://twitter.com/karunchandhok/status/54237221171105792
I like a clock going upwards quickly!!! #bttf
I like this movie an awful lot!
i am confused by adverts in the middle.
Just come back from a swimming gala in Cheshire. I got a silver medal and a speeding ticket (in possibly the only walk of life where speeding tickets are considered worthy of a laminated certificate - I got it by beating my personal-best entry time by over 15%) :D
Think of it like F1 used to be. #happytheBBChaveF1coverage
:)
It does seem to be taking an awful long time to get anywhere.
It's a Delorean. ;)
:D
Well done
"It's all a dream. It's just a very, intense, dream."
More than that!
Thank you :) Took a combined 18 seconds off personal-best times today, and I gather the reason I didn't end up with a full sweep of speeding tickets (I only did 2 races) was because the race where I got silver was already the fastest race for my stroke, length and gender.
Now going to relax by putting on the LMS qualifying on (I know the result but want to find out how it happened, seeing as I was doing front crawl at the time).
Jeez louise, you're like... 60 minutes behind. :)
Johnny B Gooooode.
+1 channels FTW! :D
...Honestly, I am about to shoot my computer.
But give Turkey Machine a break. He had to fix a flat tire on his Delorean...
Poxy Goodyears...
I think I've ust decided to move to Portsmouth.....
I thought you were going to Southampton
It's like 15 miles apart....
So you are going to live in Portsmouth and not going to Portsmouth Uni?
I might move like this month :P Very tempting. Not to go to the uni no....
You are moving 6 months before you start your course?
I'm bored, my boss is driving me MAD. Nothing particularly tying me here. If I can get a transfer, I'd go at the end of the month.
"Wait a minute... I've got all the time I want, I've got a time machine!"
He said it.
"1.21 JIGGAWATTS!"
Oooooh I found nice houses and everything. I'm 100% sold on this....
Are you looking on the net or did you visit?
On the internet. That's how I found my current house and it suits my needs down to the ground. Much easier than wandering around places all day!!
"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads."
I wonder if Mr C would be mad if I flipped on ITV2+1.
!!
Much easier
How can Radio Le Mans not have posted LMS qualifying yet? It finished over seven hours ago!
:D
I like this sequence with the skateboard and the hanging-on-to-a-pickup. The health and safety board would flip if anybody tried that around here! :D
Hehehehe I wish I could be less impulsive
Wish I could have that quality. I tend to organise *everything*, particularly with F1 in my life.
That said, I have just decided to visit my Grandma and Aunt in Essex this month.
with the potholes we have the skateboarder would flip too.
:D
Is it wrong I prefer music from the 50s/60s?
Nope
Mr C are you about?
Thanking you! :D
You're welcome :)
He sort of is, sort of isn't. Can I help?
just wondering if i can embed a video from vimeo? if so.. how can i do that?..
He took the DeLorean for a drive?
If there is an embed code, you should be able to just copy and paste.
i tried that but it just says the video title and then by the artist. No worries. I shall link to it. was just wondering :D
I bemoan the fact my "down" arrow doesn't work, yet I fail to remember that my laptop has scroll bars on its touchpad.
#TMfail
BTTF - awesome awesome awe.some. film.
I actually did my daily in time so that i can schedule it! progress!!
#sorrymrc
Well done
plus i checked the links! they all work (i hope...)
I am super impressed. Mr C may not be :)
You are so organised
Can I have some?
normal service will no doubt resume next week :)
You can't have organised and impulsive, that's just greedy.
:D
I'll have all three please :D :D
right lukeh and i are off to watch a film. have a nice evening all, and yell if there are problems with the daily! xx
Ping; http://sidepodcast.com/post/f1-on-the-ipad-f1-racing-magazine
what have you done with the real lou?
There's a funny little interview in the back of F1 Racing this month with Bruno Senna's alarm clock...
Gooood evening.
Good evening! I am really really happy.
I have been playing skittles with work people in a pub
Apparently, 2 Guinesses and 2 ales with only light snacks instead of a full meal makes me drunk.
Hehehe. Lessons learned :)
did you win the gala? I saw Fisi is on pole
Sounds fun!
I was told there would be food. And I am quite full. But it isn't "meal full" so I don't feel satisfied which is odd.
I imagine this means he's holding up Sidepodcast's Servers with his hands... he could type but it would mean holding the entire Sidepodcast system with just one hand and then if he lost balance for just one second...
Mr C always says Guinness is basically a meal.
I got a silver medal and a speeding ticket (probably the only situation you'll hear of anyone getting one for going at 2.5 miles per hour - I went over 15% faster than my entry time). The organisers were nice enough to give me a laminated certificate certifying my ticket, as well as giving everyone a free diary, pen and bag of sweets. It was one of the friendliest, best-organised galas I've ever had the pleasure of competing in and I've been doing them for 15 years.
A well-earned tea I must say.
I heard something very interesting earlier... A conversation about MediaTemple's cloud servers. Apparently drupal users hate it because drupal likes to make tons of database requests at the same time and their system is specifically configured to react badly to it. Apparently they are working on some kind of different solution for it.
Well done! It took me over 3 years to achieve that for my blog...
Do you think I'd make a good court usher?? :P
I once got locked out of my house and had to wait at the pub when I was just
16,17, 18 (that's right - Ed)... And the kindly landlord heard my story and told me that I should drink Guiness rather than beer, "you don't know when you'll get another meal if you're locked out, so it better be Guiness, food in a glass".Clustered databases are a bit tricky to do well.
It was quite filling
(lukeh is obviously a bad influence)
#nothere
Congrats! Plus free stuff as well.
Thank you :) It was a good gala for the team overall - everyone got some medals, one swimmer got their first gold medal ever, someone else got two golds and a bronze and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Probably just as well I didn't invite anyone to the gala though as viewing space was rather limited...
Alison, let me know when I get home, if you want to come & stay for the weekend to check out the drive between Pompey & S'oton & the neighbourhood of the place you want to live.
Oooh goodness very generous!! Thanks :D Will do.
That's good.
btw, our team won :) not that it was taken overly seriously
I'm looking forward to the next gala but I have no idea when or where it will be.
I'm struggling to understand the concept of a speeding ticket for swimming
Southampton is a bit meh apart from the bit around the uni which is nice (I liked the park although never spent enough time there), what with going to the other uni. Portsmouth has lots of navy people around, seems nice in places and bad in others, I was told not to go there but always wondered if that was down to him being in Southampton and the two cities essentially hating each other.
Ping: http://mrschristine.com/2011/04/02/face-recognition-via-iphoto/
I gather she broke a record?
Ah in that case well done, I am obviously slow tonight
You are going there because of the supply of sailors?
Am heading to bed before I fall asleep on the sofa (again). Good talking with you all.
G'night!
bye
A typical swimming pool has only six lanes. Most events have more than six entrants. Putting more than one person in the same lane is... ...a bad idea, especially if one of them is someone like me.
What the organisers of most galas do to solve this is ask the team managers for a representative time it takes each entrant to do the specified event. Mostly previous galas are used as evidence, but there is a specific procedure for coaches to generate that time for someone who's not swum before or recently undergone a major change in how fast they swim. This is the "entry time".
The "entry times" for all swimmers are sorted in order. This pits swimmers against those people closest to them in speed - at least in theory. In order to work, the "entry times" have to be real and correspond reasonably closely with the swimmer's genuine speed on the day of the swim. Otherwise there's a risk that an unscrupulous team manager could submit a time much slower than the one their swimmer can do (perhaps getting the swimmer to deliberately underperform at a gala, or fake an injury/illness to provide an artificially slow time). That would put the swimmer against much slower competitors and give them an easy and unfair win (because each race within each event has separate medals awarded until the borderline-international level).
To avoid this, there's a rule at most galas that anyone going more than a set amount faster than their "entry time" (15% at most galas including this one, occasionally 20%) is disqualified and denied a medal. They are given a "speeding ticket" to indicate their time was genuine and done without breaking any technical regulations (such as walking part of the distance) but removed from the results to prevent cheating from creeping into the system.
The distinction is important. A "speeding ticket" is valid for use as an "entry time" in any gala, whereas any other form of disqualification is not.
The amusing thing is that due to the rule deterring cheating of this type, getting a "speeding ticket" is almost as highly prized as a gold medal. The rules mean that people tend to be entered on their personal-best time unless there's a good reason not to do so. Breaking a personal best at any time is good, but breaking it by over 15% tends to result in a lot of cheering and hand-shaking from your team... ...even though usually a swimmer will have nothing but a time to show for it.
It's probably the only walk of life where speeding tickets are considered desirable, and I did mention to one of the team assistants I might have trouble explaining this to my friends later on as a result...
Oh I see, very good stuff then :D
Seemed to do well at the skittles on my 3rd ever attempt, quite pleased
