Today we've got another launch in store. This time Ferrari are due to unveil their new car, and we're hoping it will be a bit more than just a livery. There'll be a breakout thread along shortly to cover the launch, and apparently there's live streaming! Loving the interactivity this year. Anyways, here are some other things we're talking about:
- Talking of launches, Mercedes posted a replay of their online stream so that if you missed the event on Monday, you can catch right up. Naturally, a lot of it is in German, and you still don't manage to get a good look at the car, but it's worth watching if you've got a spare half hour.
- We had some real good news yesterday (before all the Apple stuff kicked off) in the shape of Autosport preparing to announce the introduction of digital magazines. They trialled the idea when we had the postal strike in the UK, and now it looks as though it's coming back for real. This is very good news, and whilst the setup isn't perfect for searching and archiving information, it's an amazing step in the right direction.
- So, yes, there was Apple news yesterday, and as content producers, we are quite excited about the new iPad. That is a stupid name, by the way. Mr C spent most of the evening daydreaming about what he could get up to on the new device. If you have thoughts about the device, please share them in our dedicated thread, it's not all a love-fest, I promise.
That should do it for now. There's plenty to keep us busy to forget the fact that it's Thursday, so I will see you in the comments.
Since F1-Live has died, anyone else wondered where GMM have gone?
http://www.f1times.co.uk/
I found them! It's like internet Wheres Wally
apparently the site is "looking to remove gmm soon". actions however, speak louder :)
oooh really, link?
it was a twitter conversation over christmas with @mike_griffin_f1. i'll never be able to dig the tweet out now, but mike said he wasn't a fan, but it's a partnership and he has little choice.
at least i think that was it.
ah ok then. sounds good
Ooo. That's Ryan Woods site. He posts here...
evening sidepodpeople
have only tweeted with mike, ryan comments here?
Yeah, I'm sure I've seen him around on the Doohickey, certain of it even....
you're more than likely correct. although i'm disappointed anyone reading comment here would still use said sources for news. it's not like we don't try.
Good point sir.
On that note I'd best go to bed. Up at 5 and off to Farnborough tomorrow. Yawn!
Speak to you all tomorrow afternoon. Will miss the Ferrari launch sadly as I'll be in a meeting for most of the morning. Boo!
tyan woods does not show up on a search of the site. There is a ryan who comments so it may be him
Night Adie
Night.
night adie
I was looking at the about page, and I was amused to find that the most highly rated post is one that has 8 out of 5. it has to be very very good... ;-)
Well now I'm mildly annoyed... my Nokia E71 (Christmas prezzie) doesn't want to connect to my home wifi, I'm trawling the web and apparently it is a problem lots of people have..
shhh. minor bug ;)
who said something? ;-)
Morning, folks.
Much excitement in the comments last night with the iPad, from what I see. :D
Hello... and goodbye, I'm going to bed. :)
bye mr pat!
Night Pat.
hi journeyer, bye pat
hey guille.
Since everyone was so distracted with the iPad, I assume no F1 news yesterday?
well, apparently the f1 live timing app will work on it... ;-)
:D Just saw Silverstone getting renovated already.
@RG: It didn't take Gillett very long to start digging - but it did take him much longer to build anything from the digging...
:)
heres an incredibly random question...
"To Whom it may concern"
is the W capital?
No
thankye.
i.hate.forms
Nope.
Am filling in a Silverstone media form, gets me into all club events, but i need at least 5 examples of motorsport work (easy) with at least 3 "must feature silverstone events"
Any ideas for what to write for the silverstone ones? ;)
actually, i cant be bothered! i'll just apply for single events and do a big one next year. stupid forms
Is it limited to what you can write about? If not:
- Formula 1
- MotoGP
- 24 Hours of Silverstone OR BTCC
They'll be plenty of opportunitys this year, its not worth the effort for writing 3 new ones i think
Ahhh. Makes sense.
australia post just charged me $18 to send an australian open program to new zealand. I feel ripped off. The program was only $16!
Ouch.
a quick plug for thursday thoughts question:
http://tripleleagueracing.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/thursday-thoughts-new-tracks-deleting-tracks/
and now i must sleep.
Good night
(am never going to be awake for the ferrari thing)
niiiight
Ahhhh home. It feels great to be back home.
You get lost in Tijuana?
No. My kidneys are intact.
However, I've been hitting my head on my forehead so much, I am starting to look like the Native Americans indigenous to my area. Between the legislature being in session and reading that stupid press releases that Peter Windsor release.
Morning, folks.
So both Chinese women out at the semis, and we get the dream Women's Final: Serena vs. Henin.
I say Henin in 3.
Otanjou-bi Omedetou Gozaimasu, Taku-san! :D
It's Takuma Sato's birthday today. :)
#MFC Sky to launch 3D channel in pubs: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8483136.stm
Increase in patrons shouting "Wot you lookin' at?" expected ;)
:D
Morning :)
g'day g'day
Morning!
Hehe do they say that in NZ?
they don't even say it here. :D
ooh it's Andy Murray time. I'm scared.
That he'll win? :P
Even I can admit he's been playing well. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the final because it'd be SO GOOD to watch Roger beat him. But I'm always very pessimistic so the stress might kill me.
Hehehehe. :D I STILL can't believe he hasn't dropped a set all tournament - and that's AFTER going through Nadal.
Morning everyone!
Morning Lukeh
Hello Alison and Lukeh.
Ferrari launch, or Murray v Cilic? Decisions, decisions...
I'm going for Ferrari launch. I'm sure it will be more optimistic that Mr Murray ;) (although I do want him to win(#sorryamy))
Plus I want to see if it truly does have 5,000 santander logos
both
Morning all.
Morning Christine, how are you?
Not been feeling too good all week, but surviving. How's everyone?
Boo :( never nice to have one of those icky feeling weeks.
I'm ok, kinda excited for the launches despite the fact we know what Ferrari is gonna look like today and what McLaren is gonna look like tomorrow :P
Apparently Williams were firing up the FW32 at 3am this morning. I hope this wasn't next to where rubens is camping or there'll be trouble *shakes fist*
Camping? In a tent?
Nah, in his big super motorhome. He mentioned in an interview with the BBC he was camping out at the factory to get to know everyone and get used to being part of the team.
I wish I could camp out in a motorhome.
Christine there is a new actual F1 twitter to add to the ever growing list
http://www.twitter.com/InsideFerrari
Guess who :P
Ooh, excellent. Keep an eye on that for the launch thread!
ahhh Cilic <3
http://twitpic.com/104m5z
Orange stripes on Jenson's race suit?
Ah nevermind, they were on the 2009 race suit as well. Just didnt recognise the stripeyness
More like rocket red.
And Jenson doesn't look good there at all.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love Marin Cilic?
What's happening?
Murray lost the first set :D
From the BBC live text:
Oooh.
I bet thats what he said when Cilic beat him at the US Open too.
Nice quiet day today at work it seems. I hope.
I now have the Tetris theme in my head from the Game Boy discussion in the Apple thread :-)
Tut tut, when you say these things out loud, then it all goes wrong!
ah no! I'm still hopeful
#tennisupdate
Murray changed his shirt and now they're both wearing the same colour. I don't like it when they do that.
Amy, just found out: as long as Murray doesn't win the title, Nole moves up to #2.
And if Murray DOES win it, he's up to #2, with Nadal down to #4.
yep, that we can't allow. Nole is allowed there though because Nole rules.
There's some kind of meeting going on today and there are people everywhere. It's like an obstacle course trying to get down the corridor. I think I'll stay at my desk!
Boo. Today's the day of the annual client dinner where last year I had too much to drink. People cannot stop talking about it like they have never drank too much themselves. Can't people move on?
when there's fun to be had at others expense?
alonso's 6 tenths, kimi's icecream, lukeh's amazini...
no chance.
...killing ringo.
no chance.
:D
Yeah that's cool I guess... but people act as if they have never done it themselves?
Never in front of you.... That's all that counts :P
exactly :)
Ah but some have ;)
I can't say I've ever killed ringo before ;)
I'm new to this real time stuff. How does one quote another comment? Some of the 'Reply' boxes are greyed out.
No idea what I'm doing ;)
Simply click reply on the comment you wanna reply to and click the comment :)
Welcome!
Thanks Lukeh, but how about the greyed out ones? Is it possible to quote those?
you may have to change the "active thread" at the top of the page, if buttons are disabled.
This will help you sir! http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Live+Commenting+Solutions
Ahh thank you!
Hmmm. Murray looking good for the win now, sadly. A shame.
Oh well. At least he's dropped a set now.
Morning all
BOOOO!
The tennis gods are just messing with him. He will get close enough to taste victory and then they will go LOL, JUST KIDDING, 16 FOR THE GOAT, NONE FOR YOU.
It is really odd how unpopular he has become!
I think it's like Lewis. Because his mother is always shown on TV people don't like him
nah, its weird, everyone loves Judy.
Can't help but feel this will be getting higher this week
http://www.andymurrayometer.com/
judy likes it
Why is Jim Courier doing all the on court interviews? Are there no Aussies who can hold a mic and talk?
The definitive site on shoelaces: http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/
Just for, you know, those who are getting any funny ideas...
They'd could have had Pat Cash but he has a habit of doing his spiderman act up into the stands
because Jim Courier makes everything hilariously awkward. I love him. He's no Henri Leconte though. He is sooo biased towards the French players and you can tell the other commentators in the booth haaate being there with him. Here is a video I prepared earlier. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuguwO0uIWI
It's probably down to how annoying Andy can be sometimes. Like that primal scream he did when he broke Cilic for the first time. It's nowhere near as amusing or enjoyable as Nadal's pumping fists or Federer being Federer.
I don't enjoy anyone who 'c'mon!s' on the opponents unforced error. I don't like it when the spectators applaud it. It's just not cricket. You know those forums when people just post animations to show their emotions instead of actually writing words? My tennis one is like that. I am an animation-making machine. I have so many requests to make Judy ones, but I couldn't name anyone elses mother (except Fed, her name is Lynette :D)
Someone broke the R on our local Greggs' sign!! Who is this.. this... Geggs?!
Quick plug for the middle-of-the-day shift as I've only been mentioning it late in the day. I've started a new game, and anyone interested in playingmay join in here! It is weekly but not too involving, just pick some drivers. Plenty of time, it closes tomorrow (might want to wait until this evening UK time, after qualifying). Apologies for the long post but I had to lay it all out, being week 1.
way more tennis matches should involve players being handed beer from the spectators, then just stopping to have a drink and a chat by the net.
Afternoon guys.
Sounds good!
Afternoon tom, how are you?
Hey dude.
That's terrible! I hope the police are on the case.
Rather bored, having to do my job and look after peasants, I mean, lower school kids, in a computer room.
If anyone is somewhere where they can watch, I would recommend http://atdhe.net/7635/watch-australian-open-leconte-rafter-vs-arthurs-cash
I laughed so hard I cried before.
I was worried they would give me Susage Rolls
Gottle of Geer!
or Sausae Rolls
What the...?
Anthony Hamilton is running 2009-spec F1 cars for test drivers..
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81095
I mean to say... Great idea but where did that come from?
Sounds reasonable. Will still cost them a lot of money though, which is one of the biggest problems..
It's a good idea, and probably solves the issue of up and coming drivers not getting enough time testing F1 cars to get ready for the big time.
Although I kind of see this as a smokescreen for Anthony to establish links with non-McLaren teams for Lewis' future.
This is what I thought StefanGP were doing this year...
yeah but they're doing it for themselves
For someone who gets slagged off a only hanging around to watch his boy he seems to be a sharp operator. I have a feeling in ten years time he could be one of the most powerful people in the sport.
There are a lot of young drivers with a lot of sponsorship. Really is a shame he didn't do it a year ago with all the new drivers this season. Could have got the business straight into the black
Team Hamilton
Possible. I never would've seen it coming. This is a great move for him.
It seems odd that some of the more established driver managers didn't do this. Especially those with GP2 teams. This is going to help him get his hands on the best young talent. Sign for Nicolas Todt and you get an introduction to Ferrari. Sign for Hamilton and you get two free days in what is a current F1 car.
Looks like Anthony Hamilton is here to stay. And LewHam might become a driver manager too after retirement.
You can't really say that now, can you? Nick de Vryes was the first step. But this, this is the real deal now.
I think we'll see how successful Anthony truly is by the number of GP2 champions he'll have managed by then. As well as how many people on a GP2 grid are managed by him.
But he still needs to improve on his PR skills.
Corrected. :D
He manages di Resta too
I always enjoy Tony Dodgins' pieces and he's done a long feature with Mark Galagher, who was involved with the Lola F1 bid and is now with Cosworth, so he's going into Cosworth's POV on the alleged requirement to use them..
http://www.autosport.com/features/article.php/id/2604 (sub)
No F1 seat for him though... Not yet, anyway.
I think its quite telling that the first story I went to read on Autosport was about the Ant-Ham thing and not the Ferrari launch.
ITS RED! IT HASNT CHANGED!
gah. thursdays are rubbish.
How are we all?
McLaren and Mercedes have had him under contract for 3 or 4 years and not even a proper test. Hamilton not only got him a proper test but the bizarre Friday job with FIF1
That is unblievable
It's a different shade of red (sort of.)
I'm very good. I'm baking a cake today. It's going to be a chocolate cake. I haven't baked a cake for years. It'll probably be terrible..
one was expected and the other could revolutionise young driver preparation, and you run a website and podcasts about young drivers
oooh hello Nathan, i dont think i've seen you around. So hi!
it's still red ;) car launches bore me. grrr
you raise a good point
quite right, i'm new to this commenty thing. hello.
its incredibly addictive, to the point where the first thing i do in the morning is often turning my laptop on to say hi....
ooh my first thieves!

"We are not claiming to be the original source of this post:

yeah thanks
ooh, congratulations! ;)
It puzzles me why people do that? I mean, there's not even any ads there!
Very good point, that.
His career is going stagnant. If he doesn't get a decent shot soon, he may as well try out in Sports Cars...
I had just about reached the point where I thought he was going to be another McNish but when the FIF1 test driver job was first discussed I thought he had a chance but this Friday driver deal depending how many Friday's he does should be enough for him to show his ability.
When there were Friday drivers before they could screw their engines and tyres because they could be replaced by the next race but this time he is using the tyre and engine allocation of the car he is in so if he is faster it is genuine because he has no technical advantage and one of the other drivers in the team is getting into his car with his set up so we should fairly quickly get an idea how good he is. I expect he will be the big talking point of the first race weekend he does.
anyone know what this is about?
A new Mercedes GP Petronas Formula 1 car is displayed during the official launch of the 2010 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix in Kuala Lumpur on January 2010
pics:

http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/96233627/AFP
what nose / chassis is that??
That looks like an old FIF1 to me
Because of the high, pointy nose and chunky, raised sidepods.
Have you got a side pic?
They launched the livery then just parked the car somewhere and didn't tell anyone?
The nose looks MP4/18 and that is not a good omen because it never raced. They will struggle to pass a crash test with a nose that thin. I guess it is bogus
why do they treat all fans like idiots
>picswhat nose / chassis is that??
What the?
it's not for fans?
Oops, my last comment was a bit messy..
sadly not.
Fans/press/whatever
Its not new. Gah. Just ignore me. Having a bad day
I reserve my position - the nose is too thin and pointy.
so what was that Merc picture all about?
Also apparently Williams are doing their shakedown today. Will we get pictures?
i agree. was curious what on earth it was.
i think it's called GMM syndrome
cw says video: http://twitter.com/ClaireVWilliams/status/8322238966
Could just be a mashup of wind tunnel model bits that were discarded?
Hmm.
That will be video for sponsor ads. We won't see that unless their is someone else videoing.
Like, "oh crap, we need to send a car to Malaysia for Petronas to show off"
"No worries, just stick some bits together from the shop. They'll never notice; Malaysians don't even turn up to their own race!"
*not here*
It's the Honda RA108 without the wings and things, with what looks like an early edition of the Brawn 09 front and rear wing.
ooooh, thankyou.
probably one of the cars they would take to random events last year repainted... the 'brawn' i saw at bluewater was the same kinda thing.
Yep, she's right: http://blogf1.co.uk/images/posts/Honda/2008/RA108-003.jpg
That's shocking that they did that!
like the Mclaren we saw at goodwood?
you doubted her?
Completely.
But Silverstone looks like this..?
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/1324258
No, not at all!
It was more to post a comparison pic!
You do tech specs too?
i know my brawns/hondas ;)
What about the Stowe Circuit?
I guess it doesn't flow so well to say, "we're launching the Malaysian GP with an old car that's painted in the new colours because the new car hasn't been revealed yet, although it will be soon".
currently being extended
or south
They will run on one of the short circuits
yes.. but not sure they tried to deceive everyone about the model though? Honda used to bring the earlier model to goodwood repainted thinking no one would notice. last year was the first time they bought the current car, but couldn't run it.
I say that, i assume they are working on it at the same time as the rest of it
i goes some way to explaining why we needed a livery launch on monday too.
They are only running for videos so they could use a runway or any two corners
I think it was Life or someone like that just dumped their monocoque in a hedge near Silverstone after it failed the crash tests
only for hondas/brawns... i dont have a big enough memory/ interest to remember everyones:)
I have a vague memory of someone doing that but no idea who
And that's where the team should have stayed!
Leo and others in kilts????
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZfoyaGsTj8
that's just not right.
is that the original tech tv? :D
me, which skype version are you using?
Patrick wore a kilt every once in awhile.
But Leo should never wear a kilt.
Ever.
erm, the latest on mac and a "recent" version on linux. but haven't updated in in a while.
Yikes, that's an OLD screensavers, Morgan and Martin are on there.
Ah ok. I got my lovely netbook back from the menders and have to reinstall everything and I noticed there is now a skype-mid package in the canonical repository and the ones in medibuntu have disappeared. I'm trying to get it to work but since I'm back in Jaunty it's not too successful.
Just in case you want to play around. But the layout is quite different (a bit like the new windows layout I get lost in) I haven't found the skype lady yet :(
sooo.... I'm extremely pleased to see that the live commenting is still alive and kicking, now the "off season" is over it's time to burst out my live commenting gloves and brush off my visor! how is everyone
i know not of this lady of which you speak ;)
do keep us posted though.
hey ya. i think we're pretty damn good. yourself?
Humph.
Yeah i'm good, keeping track of the usual... im sure the new ferrari livery has been widley discussed today, but i think it looks bloody spiffing!
Don't worry Christine, I'm sure he prefers your voice to hers!
I was an avid viewer :D
It looks nice but seems absolutely useless

First shot of the new Williams http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81104
Pointy nose alert!
Blimey... that is pointy
Looks like pointy is the new black
Hopefully having a pointy nose = fast
Williams have already leant their lesson with giant front wing noses I think :P
front wing looks quite 'high' - possibly to do with the higher ride height induced by the 'bigger' wet tyres?
Just logged on. Ferrari = loooooooooooooong.
hard to tell how long that williams is
oooh
Seems bluer than usual...
Hi everybody.
he 'suddenly got the urge'?
or suddenly remembered how much money he earned from the last one being reissued so often? :-)
Hey guys. I got free Internet in the hotel room I am staying at tonight. Just waiting to leave for dinner -I haven't told anyone except Mrs. Goat that I am staying over...
Time to go walk the dogs I think. Cya all later
could be, but might just be the positioning on the camera.
they could do with a couple more sponsors.
Just an interim livery.... I hope...
The LG survey mentioned on the latest Debrief has an actual page up. It's not actually a survey yet however.
"The survey will go live on February 2, 2010. Please either come back and fill the survey then or leave your email on the field below and we will contact you when the survey goes live."
I dropped my email into their pool and we'll see if they contact me later this month.
Just thought you might want to know. Cheers.
Interesting, thanks!
BBC have won an award for the Monaco GP:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2010/01/award_for_bbc_f1_coverage.html
I would imagine that Williams livery is perhaps not totally finished, and its missing some sponsors. Was it last year they left it quite late before getting sponsors names on the car?
And they where filming something, perhaps a TV advert for RBS? Or a bit for there show "The Factory" which they do with Eurosport?
I've been karting in Newark today :)
Evening all
yayyyy
karting
How was it?
I went karting a few nights ago.
Certainly hope you guys were faster than I was!
Evening.
Testing potential venues?
Evening! Twitter still a confusing vortex of confusion...
Ferrari looks...a little white on the front wing. I preferred the artist's impression...
I love it - I'm just majorly tired after 2 hours...
I haven't been able to take my eyes of the pointy nose yet. We got our first view of the Williams today and it has a ridiculously pointy nose too
I so need to get some mates and go round one somewhere. Dying to try it.
Hey Pat and Lewis.
find a track, and see if they have any leagues/groups that regularly hold races. That's what I did, the group I started with races every other tuesday night.
A lot of tracks have open practise sessions where you just turn up and drive. Not racing but you can compete with your mates on the fastest time.
Appears to be a decent one near Sunderland, 30 mins away.
quick reminder for thursday thoughts:
http://tripleleagueracing.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/thursday-thoughts-new-tracks-deleting-tracks/
Oooh, nice question. Will do it in a bit.
Ooh cheers. Will get on with that right now!
Will do shortly. I'm also pondering something for another post which I may write first.
Ooh my thursday thoughts have turned into a giant Tilke rant!
let it all out
I knew we should have called it Thursday Rants.
Can't possibly imagine how something like that could happen! ;)
Evening, evening. I had a rather weird dream about the coming F1 season, oddly enough, I was a driver.
I'm brewing a blog rant, but it isn't on this subject :-)
do tell
did you look into to your own eyes and see senna?
Vision Racing was closed today, so T.George's ties to racing are over. I want to ask him if it was worth it.
I have no idea. I was definitely at the back of the grid, so in one of the new teams. Tom G to sign for USF1? You heard it here first...
interesting.
It's worth noting that Pat Ciporelli is/was the team's PR and changed the way teams approach (or should approach) Twitter. Standard-setting.
so why are you commenting here? get blogging.
I'm eating :-)
and clearing my head first by watching a bit of MotoGP
I've been karting in Newark today :)
How was it? {Comment #265}
It went well. I didn't break any circuit records, but that was OK because it was mostly a test to see whether this circuit would be more or less suitable than Buxton for the summer karting competition.
Dad and I have come to the conclusion that Newark would be a better place for the event for several reasons. For one thing, you just can't buy the sheer enthusiasm Newark has for racing. Also, there is more flexibility about what we can and cannot do there (more about that at my wiki or my blog) and a wider range of people can race there (the weight limit is informal and they've had a 19 1/2 stone person drive the type of kart the staff thought most suitable for the group, there's no height limit and they have experience in doing other adaptations). The run-off can also be measured in acres for some corners, which could prove useful...
Happily, the karts are quiet enough that I can drive them and it's reasonably straightforward to drive them. I had a good time in my 20-minute session. I was on my own because nobody else had turned up for the arrive-and-drive session at that point, but I was 4th of 6 who'd visited that day. They even let me take the balaclava I used home as a souvenir (it's disposable, so probably no great expense to them, but still...)
Testing potential venues? {Comment #268}
Precisely :)
Do you have a postcode for that place?
Evening everyone :)
I have had *such* a busy day today... crazybonks!
ipad related?
Sadly not! I was interviewing people which takes time and the CEO came over at 9 am asking for a new feature in the CRM which had to be released by 12:30... Which was, um, "challenging" :)
(i wasn't even awake then!)
Well it's lucky you weren't me ;)
That looks interesting.
The second last paragraph in your blog and wiki items is undinished although it is prety obvious where you were going with it
Evening all.
What a busy day

Thursday Thoughts are done, tis quite a long read though

Unless talking about rock type stones in which case you still need to weigh them ;)
that's better than water into wine. no wonder they're flippin' loaded.
mick might object?
Right, a lot of catching up to do. It slightly railroads your existing conversation and I apologise for that....but is there anywhere I can watch a replay of the Ferrari launch?
Fankooo!
http://www.youtube.com/user/ferrariworld
As ever I thank you kind fellow :)
I'm not sure I like the nose :S
it's amazing how they're trying to keep the ancient ways alive...
;)
If you don't like the nose on the Ferrari you better not look at the new Williams
There's a new Williams? I really have been out of the loop today. I can see my rss feed has gone nuts but I expected that!
autosport.com
Just one sneaky picture that Autosport took http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81104
Cheers Paul, and Steven.
2 Red Bull clones there? I wonder if Newey has a secret trick up his sleeve the others haven't thought of yet.
i would be gutted if he hasn't. two things to say:
- amazed at the restraint rbr showed re: diffuser row last year
- how much of a genius is newey?
I'm betting he does. I can't imagine that Red Bull and Newey have just stood still
The Red Bull last year was a great car, until it got stuck behind another car. Seemed to be terrible in another cars slipstream.
is that the cars fault, or the drivers?
Indeed.
He is very, very good - and the regs as they are clearly play to his strengths. Not so the flippy up bits etc.
I'd heard a rumour that the Newey-tight-packaging was causing issues with the fuel pump and coolant boiling over....
Car
Could be a bit of both, but we know Webber & Vettel are good drivers so I'd imagine it was more done to the car. Great aero design when the air is nice and clean, but when it was disturbed by another car? They seemed to struggle. The Red Bulls seemed to find it impossible to pass a KERS car last year, while the Brawn could.
Webber has never been very good at overtaking. Vettel it is maturing well but still has a lot of experience to gain. Other drivers like Jenson are simply better overtakers.
+1
That is likely a fair comment about Webber. I'm not so sure about the Jenson comment though, he did great on a few occasions last year when it came to overtaking but in previous years? I'm just not sold on Jenson being a great driver yet, he had a great car during the first half of the season last year which won him the championship,
I refuse to believe anyone with a superlicence doesn't know how to overtake. These guys have been overtaking on a track since they were 8 years old.
It's easy to make an aerodynamically efficient (high lift:drag ratio) in clear air but doing it in choppy air when following another or in the transient aero phase entering a corner is a whole different matter. Often the car with the highest aerodynamic efficiency is not as good in anything but still air.
Webber overtakes are not especially clean and there always looks like an element of desperation. Jenson has a classic smooth style that favours making a very clean overtake. I say he is a great driver with a great package but he remains slightly incomplete as a driver. He is not great on set up either.
Yeah they all are bound to be able to overtake, but not all of them have the drive or courage to do it in F1. May I present Jarno Trulli as an example?
Its relative but within F1 circles it is difficult to find evidence of clean smooth overtaking - he has a lot of questionable moves and blocking. Personally I do not rate as a top 10 F1 driver.
None of them lack the courage. They have been doing it for 20 years. Trulli's problem is because he qualifies better than he races he is always going backwards
Then you have Sutil where it usually ends up in tears - but he still has raw pace on occasions. Cannot work out Jarno - phenomenal qualifying pace.
That would make a good Thursday Thought. Top ten current drivers
Yeah Jenson has a great driving style but does he have that cutting edge that Alonso, Lewis or Schumacher have? or Kimi when he was actually trying? He has it now and again, but its been missing more often than not I think.
Probably not, the points this year he got rather flatter him in comparison to his team mate.
Some drivers are more willing to take that bit of risk that overtaking in F1 normally needs though. You are right that Trulli normally finds himself out of place, but hes not a driver that will take that risk to dive down the inside or even really defend his place heavily.
I think one of the big differences is that Jenson needs the car to be just right and then he is right on the pace but if it is a little off he is not so good. The other three would get the best time possible out of their car in a range of conditions.
People have suggested that Lewis will struggle against Jenson this year because he is harder on tyres but you can's have a car that handles perfectly with 240 litres of fuel in it all the way down to zero fuel in it. So I can see Jenson struggling more with that than Lewis will
I present exhibit A. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78JAc7fMKxE
A race he was driving round holding his helmet on his head at the same time I'd like to add...
Killer instinct? I'd say it's there.
We shall see this year I guess. Perhaps he has matured into a better driver over the last year. Not a fan of Lewis either, but he is very racy so Button will be hard pressed to stay on even terms with him.
It is important to define whether this is last season or overall. Sure Mark with a good car is going to be in the top 10. My top 5 is easy Alonso, Lewis, Vettel, Kimi and Schumacher. Then on for me it gets more difficult as you have Rosberg, Rubens, Robert, Nick and Jenson in no particular order as second tier. The my third order would be Mark, Trulli, Adrian etc.
I am not sure that is the case in the majority of situations. If they see a chance they will take it but with the stupid tech regs and Tilke a lot of the times what looks like a chance to us is not a genuine chance. At least this year we won't have people using fuel strategy to avoid the need to overtake
Do who we think are the ten best drivers who will race this season. Not who we think will get the best results but who we would like to hire on all aspects of driving ability if we ran a team.
Drop Kimi and Nick then I would add Mark and Jarno.
They all have potential when the circumstance are right I present Nick's move at Monaco on Fernando as evidence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS5vnIx-RfQ
Top 10? Hmm.
Hamilton, Alonso, Schumacher, Massa, Kubica, Button, Vettel, Webber, Barrichello, Sutil/Rosberg
If you want my opinion then Nick is a criminally under-rated driver and the fact he's not been snapped up for a seat in 2010 is nothing short of a tragic waste.
I forgot Massa - he is clearly close to the top five, and probably in the top five without Kimi. Not sure Sutil is there - he is in Joe's words a yo yo.
That I won't disagree with! I still can't get my head around Pedro de la Rosa getting the Sauber drive instead of him. I'm sure Pedro bring a lot of technical experience with him, but Nick isn't a young driver now either. Can only imagine its down to money.
For me it's
Schumacher,
Alonso-Hamilton
Button
Vettel Massa Barrichello
Heidfeld, Kubica, Rosberg
I think Sutil has bags of talent, he just wastes it sometimes.
Best running style on the grid though.
Oh yeah. And thankfully we do see it an awful lot as he gets out of the car ;)
Unkind - Jenson's trot at Monaco was impressive!
Nick is 32! Sure it is money - Pedro might not actually be a bad choice - I am not a fan of his but his last stint at Macca was not that bad.

Night everyone!
Night sir.
Night!
Night Lukeh.
I'm off too, can't keep my eyes open. Hopefully a decent night's sleep will do me some good. :)
I'm too excited to sleep sadly.
ooh, before I go, what time is the Mclaren launch in the morn?
A much more respectable 11am.
At the time I'm teaching. looks I'm missing another launch :(
Starts at 11:
Streamed from Here
ooh lovely. *disappears*
Quick question to anyone paying more attention than me?
Are the Mclaren Young Driver program (thats getting announced at the end of the month) and Ant Hams F1 thingy the same thing?
Didn't know about the McLaren announcement
When they announced that new young kid they signed it was one sentance at the bottom of a press release
Alright gang, I'm off.
Early start again tomorrow for the McLaren launch. I'll keep you posted best I can.
Have a good one all.
byeee
Enjoy it and don't forget your camera ;)
"McLaren will issue further details on its full young driver programme next month."
It's on charge as we speak ;)
from what little I've heard (ie, one sentence about each program), it sounds like they might be different. Sounds like Hamilton's thing is so drivers can get F1 miles, and not necessarily train them from the beginning.
Sounds like a good idea for a business.
yeah, i should imagine there would be alot of interest
Mr C... Remember me telling you about streetcar which I use for my car in London. A car you can rent by the hour and is unlocked by a smartcard. They have just released an iPhone app... It has a swipe to unlock (same kind as unlocking the phone) which unlocks the CAR!!!
That's awesome! I (heart) technology :)
I am away this weekend but once I'm back I will attempt to make a video showing this working :)
i can't wait :)
If anyone is board try this. I am only 5 minutes in but totally hooked. How does a chimp do the 1-9 memory thing. Unbelievable
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qfb4f/Natural_World_20092010_The_Chimpcam_Project/
hey everyone, just popping on for 5 mins to say hi
don't do this to me... i'm half way through an essay....... must.not.click.link...
You know you want to watch it. It is facinating.
Hi. Have you seen the pointy noses on the Ferrari and Williams?
i'm guessing much more interesting than my essay on whether there was social, political, and economic stability in germany throughout the mid 1920s. i shall save it for tomorrow. i've already watched way too much tonight including Silent Witness and Mock the Week :)
oh btw i got some tickets to see the recording of Russell Howards Good News on BBC three today. yay! :) i love getting free audience tickets :)
Animal researchers facinate me. I think they should be studied. They are obsessed with mirrors and keep making statements about animals seeing their reflection for the first time regardless of the type of animals. Almost all animals have seen their reflection in water and all the animals know it is a reflection or they wouldn't stick their face in the water.
Enjoy
yeah, how good does the Williams look, the Ferrari looks similar to last year a little bit, but the Williams looks mega!
it's going to be my free easter holidays treat (other than f1). If I get to that day and see Russell Howard's recording i know that i'm alive and have survived the busiest term this school will have ever thrown at me (much more stress to come..) fun times :)
I just find the noses of both cars very odd
no way? we NEED video.
no giggle live show?
Who was the first person to use an aero wing? I'm struggling to find anything about who it was. I've read Matra but not sure if thats right?
Any help
i swear steven answer this comment in advance yesterday?
He said about the monocoques, but i didnt read anything about wings?
Chaparal in sportscars then Lotus then Matra. Matra had a system where the wings were controlled by the brake pedal. Flat on the straights and up in the corners
Did
I posted a few comments on wings. Just filter yesterday's comments for wing and you should find them
ah ok. thanks. wasnt around much after that initial bit.
you're that good :)
I am better than that.
Right, I'm off to bed. Night all and lotsa love.
laters mr. rg.
night mr g
see ya
Night RG
evening...
*nods*
enjoying the last days of the off season?
wait wait wait
theres still another 30 odd days left!!
Having watched a bit of racing, had dinner and written a blog post, I'm no longer feeling sufficiently angry to start on my little rant :-)
Another time, perhaps.
evening
Nope, there's 3 days left. Testing starts Monday.
It's still the off season!!
DONT WISH IT AWAY!!
I want to wish it away. Off season is over. This is pre season.
testing, testing... :-)
(actually for me the off season ended this morning, the moment ferrari presented their car)
Oh no :(
but i have so much to do
Yep. The moment the first car is launched is the moment the Winter World Championship starts.
twas the end of march last year: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/03/24/officially-the-best-off-season-ever/
*points* Mr C is definitely right!
43 days to be exact ;)
Does anyone have the pic of the FW32? The pics on Autosport aren't working for me! Grrrrr! :(
ohh, me neither. they broke something?
http://cdn.images.autosport.com/editorial/1264694745.jpg
??
nope, their image server has fallen over:
http://cdn.images.autosport.com/
deaded.
so that pic doesnt work for you?
it does for me
i can see it..
nope. if you refresh your page, it won't work for you either.
did you look earlier? browser cache?
must be
ahh if only i had taken a screen shot before i pressed f5.. sorry scott.
how do you do a hard refresh in ff? because it's still working for me
:( There must be a picture somewhere else!
heheheh
quick, upload it to the drop!
give me a sec, I still have it in the cache. should I upload it to dropio?
One has miraculously just appeared in dropio from somewhere over there
;)
have pinged tech support :)
looks like there is one in the drop.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/williams-jpg-2
YAY! :D
Looking good! :P
yeap, that's it (and not from me)
I wish my computer would not download pictures to a different location to the one I tell it.
This has no connection with my previous comment. Oh no
:D hehe
:-)
The image wquality is reasonably good so you can blow it up a bit to get a good look round the car. I was told
i really really like the look of that ferrari this year... (looking at the pics on the drop).
Nose looks like a JKS F75 to me, but that reference will guarenteed mean nothing to anyone.
But it doesn't have any highlighter pen colour
Everyone's taking a leaf out of Red Bull's book and going with a high nose. Ferrari's even has the grooves in it, just like the RB5.
service: http://twitter.com/gcreighton/status/8344306112
agreed on the color. But I prefer last year's silhouette.
Looks like a flight code
and the same curves on the sidepods, taken from bmw?
aww don't worry i still don't think it's as pretty as the Brawn was. Not supporting a team this year is odd... i'm paying much more attention to the other teams :)
Good innit. :)
I started paying attention to other teams in '98 when Williams went all wrong. Not just in speed, but a red car?? Grr.
i think it's going to take some serious getting used to.. i may end up just supporting random drivers throughout the field.. rather than an individual team
(i have visions of me ending up supporting mclaren in a big way... will see how they treat Jenson ;) )
have just seen the red Williams... that is just wrong.
It changes your whole approach to F1... although I do still have a soft spot for Williams and I really think they'll do well this year. You could do worse than support them! Button's first time, Barrichello aboard..
*team, not time
Murray Walker said the paint scheme was like they'd thrown the logos into a cannon and fired it at the car :-)
hehe shall see how the season progresses, it's strange that my least favourite team has my favourite driver in it, and my favourite team now has two of my least favourite drivers in it. bad times.
eheheheh :D
Do you have a postcode for that place? {Comment #296}
NG24 2RB. Precise address is Drove Lane, Winthorpe, Newark, Notts, England and it's close to the A1.
That's very close to where I am from ;)
The second last paragraph in your blog and wiki items is unfinished although it is pretty obvious where you were going with it {Comment #303}
How did I manage to miss that?!? Oh well, thanks for pointing it out so I could fix the sentence.
