Today we've got another launch in store. This time Ferrari are due to unveil their new car, and we're hoping it will be a bit more than just a livery. There'll be a breakout thread along shortly to cover the launch, and apparently there's live streaming! Loving the interactivity this year. Anyways, here are some other things we're talking about:

  • Talking of launches, Mercedes posted a replay of their online stream so that if you missed the event on Monday, you can catch right up. Naturally, a lot of it is in German, and you still don't manage to get a good look at the car, but it's worth watching if you've got a spare half hour.
  • We had some real good news yesterday (before all the Apple stuff kicked off) in the shape of Autosport preparing to announce the introduction of digital magazines. They trialled the idea when we had the postal strike in the UK, and now it looks as though it's coming back for real. This is very good news, and whilst the setup isn't perfect for searching and archiving information, it's an amazing step in the right direction.
  • So, yes, there was Apple news yesterday, and as content producers, we are quite excited about the new iPad. That is a stupid name, by the way. Mr C spent most of the evening daydreaming about what he could get up to on the new device. If you have thoughts about the device, please share them in our dedicated thread, it's not all a love-fest, I promise.

That should do it for now. There's plenty to keep us busy to forget the fact that it's Thursday, so I will see you in the comments.

Is it limited to what you can write about? If not:

    - MotoGP

    - 24 Hours of Silverstone OR BTCC

because Jim Courier makes everything hilariously awkward. I love him. He's no Henri Leconte though. He is sooo biased towards the French players and you can tell the other commentators in the booth haaate being there with him. It's probably down to how annoying Andy can be sometimes. Like that primal scream he did when he broke Cilic for the first time. It's nowhere near as amusing or enjoyable as Nadal's pumping fists or Federer being Federer.

I don't enjoy anyone who 'c'mon!s' on the opponents unforced error. I don't like it when the spectators applaud it. It's just not cricket. You know those forums when people just post animations to show their emotions instead of actually writing words? My tennis one is like that. I am an animation-making machine. I have so many requests to make Judy ones, but I couldn't name anyone elses mother (except Fed, her name is Lynette :D)

Quick plug for the middle-of-the-day shift as I've only been mentioning it late in the day. I've started a new game, and anyone interested in playingmay join in here! It is weekly but not too involving, just pick some drivers. Plenty of time, it closes tomorrow (might want to wait until this evening UK time, after qualifying). Apologies for the long post but I had to lay it all out, being week 1.

  • Amy28/01/2010 at 12:50

way more tennis matches should involve players being handed beer from the spectators, then just stopping to have a drink and a chat by the net.

It's a good idea, and probably solves the issue of up and coming drivers not getting enough time testing F1 cars to get ready for the big time.

Although I kind of see this as a smokescreen for Anthony to establish links with non-McLaren teams for Lewis' future.

For someone who gets slagged off a only hanging around to watch his boy he seems to be a sharp operator. I have a feeling in ten years time he could be one of the most powerful people in the sport.

There are a lot of young drivers with a lot of sponsorship. Really is a shame he didn't do it a year ago with all the new drivers this season. Could have got the business straight into the black

It seems odd that some of the more established driver managers didn't do this. Especially those with GP2 teams. This is going to help him get his hands on the best young talent. Sign for Nicolas Todt and you get an introduction to Ferrari. Sign for Hamilton and you get two free days in what is a current F1 car.

You can't really say that now, can you? Nick de Vryes was the first step. But this, this is the real deal now.

I have a feeling in ten years time he could be one of the most powerful people in the sport.

I think we'll see how successful Anthony truly is by the number of GP2 champions he'll have managed by then. As well as how many people on a GP2 grid are managed by him.

But he still needs to improve on his PR skills.

His career is going stagnant. If he doesn't get a decent shot soon, he may as well try out in Sports Cars...

I had just about reached the point where I thought he was going to be another McNish but when the FIF1 test driver job was first discussed I thought he had a chance but this Friday driver deal depending how many Friday's he does should be enough for him to show his ability.

When there were Friday drivers before they could screw their engines and tyres because they could be replaced by the next race but this time he is using the tyre and engine allocation of the car he is in so if he is faster it is genuine because he has no technical advantage and one of the other drivers in the team is getting into his car with his set up so we should fairly quickly get an idea how good he is. I expect he will be the big talking point of the first race weekend he does.

I would imagine that Williams livery is perhaps not totally finished, and its missing some sponsors. Was it last year they left it quite late before getting sponsors names on the car?

And they where filming something, perhaps a TV advert for RBS? Or a bit for there show "The Factory" which they do with Eurosport?

A lot of tracks have open practise sessions where you just turn up and drive. Not racing but you can compete with your mates on the fastest time.

I've been karting in Newark today :)

    How was it? {Comment #265}

It went well. I didn't break any circuit records, but that was OK because it was mostly a test to see whether this circuit would be more or less suitable than Buxton for the summer karting competition.

Dad and I have come to the conclusion that Newark would be a better place for the event for several reasons. For one thing, you just can't buy the sheer enthusiasm Newark has for racing. Also, there is more flexibility about what we can and cannot do there (more about that at my wiki or my blog) and a wider range of people can race there (the weight limit is informal and they've had a 19 1/2 stone person drive the type of kart the staff thought most suitable for the group, there's no height limit and they have experience in doing other adaptations). The run-off can also be measured in acres for some corners, which could prove useful...

Happily, the karts are quiet enough that I can drive them and it's reasonably straightforward to drive them. I had a good time in my 20-minute session. I was on my own because nobody else had turned up for the arrive-and-drive session at that point, but I was 4th of 6 who'd visited that day. They even let me take the balaclava I used home as a souvenir (it's disposable, so probably no great expense to them, but still...)

He is very, very good - and the regs as they are clearly play to his strengths. Not so the flippy up bits etc.

I'd heard a rumour that the Newey-tight-packaging was causing issues with the fuel pump and coolant boiling over....

    Car

Could be a bit of both, but we know Webber & Vettel are good drivers so I'd imagine it was more done to the car. Great aero design when the air is nice and clean, but when it was disturbed by another car? They seemed to struggle. The Red Bulls seemed to find it impossible to pass a KERS car last year, while the Brawn could.

Webber has never been very good at overtaking. Vettel it is maturing well but still has a lot of experience to gain. Other drivers like Jenson are simply better overtakers.

That is likely a fair comment about Webber. I'm not so sure about the Jenson comment though, he did great on a few occasions last year when it came to overtaking but in previous years? I'm just not sold on Jenson being a great driver yet, he had a great car during the first half of the season last year which won him the championship,

  • Steven Roy28/01/2010 at 20:11

Could be a bit of both, but we know Webber & Vettel are good drivers so I'd imagine it was more done to the car. Great aero design when the air is nice and clean, but when it was disturbed by another car? They seemed to struggle. The Red Bulls seemed to find it impossible to pass a KERS car last year, while the Brawn could.

I refuse to believe anyone with a superlicence doesn't know how to overtake. These guys have been overtaking on a track since they were 8 years old.

It's easy to make an aerodynamically efficient (high lift:drag ratio) in clear air but doing it in choppy air when following another or in the transient aero phase entering a corner is a whole different matter. Often the car with the highest aerodynamic efficiency is not as good in anything but still air.

  • Rich28/01/2010 at 20:13

Webber overtakes are not especially clean and there always looks like an element of desperation. Jenson has a classic smooth style that favours making a very clean overtake. I say he is a great driver with a great package but he remains slightly incomplete as a driver. He is not great on set up either.

  • Paul Convery28/01/2010 at 20:15

Yeah they all are bound to be able to overtake, but not all of them have the drive or courage to do it in F1. May I present Jarno Trulli as an example?

  • Rich28/01/2010 at 20:16

Its relative but within F1 circles it is difficult to find evidence of clean smooth overtaking - he has a lot of questionable moves and blocking. Personally I do not rate as a top 10 F1 driver.

  • Steven Roy28/01/2010 at 20:17

None of them lack the courage. They have been doing it for 20 years. Trulli's problem is because he qualifies better than he races he is always going backwards

  • Rich28/01/2010 at 20:18

Then you have Sutil where it usually ends up in tears - but he still has raw pace on occasions. Cannot work out Jarno - phenomenal qualifying pace.

Yeah Jenson has a great driving style but does he have that cutting edge that Alonso, Lewis or Schumacher have? or Kimi when he was actually trying? He has it now and again, but its been missing more often than not I think.

  • Rich28/01/2010 at 20:19

Yeah Jenson has a great driving style but does he have that cutting edge that Alonso, Lewis or Schumacher have? or Kimi when he was actually trying? He has it now and again, but its been missing more often than not I think.

Probably not, the points this year he got rather flatter him in comparison to his team mate.

Some drivers are more willing to take that bit of risk that overtaking in F1 normally needs though. You are right that Trulli normally finds himself out of place, but hes not a driver that will take that risk to dive down the inside or even really defend his place heavily.

  • Steven Roy28/01/2010 at 20:23

Yeah Jenson has a great driving style but does he have that cutting edge that Alonso, Lewis or Schumacher have? or Kimi when he was actually trying? He has it now and again, but its been missing more often than not I think.

I think one of the big differences is that Jenson needs the car to be just right and then he is right on the pace but if it is a little off he is not so good. The other three would get the best time possible out of their car in a range of conditions.

People have suggested that Lewis will struggle against Jenson this year because he is harder on tyres but you can's have a car that handles perfectly with 240 litres of fuel in it all the way down to zero fuel in it. So I can see Jenson struggling more with that than Lewis will

  • Adie28/01/2010 at 20:23

Probably not, the points this year he got rather flatter him in comparison to his team mate.

We shall see this year I guess. Perhaps he has matured into a better driver over the last year. Not a fan of Lewis either, but he is very racy so Button will be hard pressed to stay on even terms with him.

  • Rich28/01/2010 at 20:24

That would make a good Thursday Thought. Top ten current drivers

It is important to define whether this is last season or overall. Sure Mark with a good car is going to be in the top 10. My top 5 is easy Alonso, Lewis, Vettel, Kimi and Schumacher. Then on for me it gets more difficult as you have Rosberg, Rubens, Robert, Nick and Jenson in no particular order as second tier. The my third order would be Mark, Trulli, Adrian etc.

  • Steven Roy28/01/2010 at 20:25

I am not sure that is the case in the majority of situations. If they see a chance they will take it but with the stupid tech regs and Tilke a lot of the times what looks like a chance to us is not a genuine chance. At least this year we won't have people using fuel strategy to avoid the need to overtake

Do who we think are the ten best drivers who will race this season. Not who we think will get the best results but who we would like to hire on all aspects of driving ability if we ran a team.

    Top 10? Hmm.

Hamilton, Alonso, Schumacher, Massa, Kubica, Button, Vettel, Webber, Barrichello, Sutil/Rosberg

  • Adie28/01/2010 at 20:35

If you want my opinion then Nick is a criminally under-rated driver and the fact he's not been snapped up for a seat in 2010 is nothing short of a tragic waste.

  • Rich28/01/2010 at 20:37

Hamilton, Alonso, Schumacher, Massa, Kubica, Button, Vettel, Webber, Barrichello, Sutil/Rosberg

I forgot Massa - he is clearly close to the top five, and probably in the top five without Kimi. Not sure Sutil is there - he is in Joe's words a yo yo.

That I won't disagree with! I still can't get my head around Pedro de la Rosa getting the Sauber drive instead of him. I'm sure Pedro bring a lot of technical experience with him, but Nick isn't a young driver now either. Can only imagine its down to money.

    Button

    Vettel Massa Barrichello

    Heidfeld, Kubica, Rosberg

Nick is 32! Sure it is money - Pedro might not actually be a bad choice - I am not a fan of his but his last stint at Macca was not that bad.

from what little I've heard (ie, one sentence about each program), it sounds like they might be different. Sounds like Hamilton's thing is so drivers can get F1 miles, and not necessarily train them from the beginning.

Sounds like a good idea for a business.

They are obsessed with mirrors and keep making statements about animals seeing their reflection for the first time regardless of the type of animals. Almost all animals have seen their reflection in water and all the animals know it is a reflection or they wouldn't stick their face in the water.

The image wquality is reasonably good so you can blow it up a bit to get a good look round the car. I was told

  • lou29/01/2010 at 00:01

i really really like the look of that ferrari this year... (looking at the pics on the drop).

Nose looks like a JKS F75 to me, but that reference will guarenteed mean nothing to anyone.

But it doesn't have any highlighter pen colour

Everyone's taking a leaf out of Red Bull's book and going with a high nose. Ferrari's even has the grooves in it, just like the RB5.

agreed on the color. But I prefer last year's silhouette.

and the same curves on the sidepods, taken from bmw?

aww don't worry i still don't think it's as pretty as the Brawn was. Not supporting a team this year is odd... i'm paying much more attention to the other teams :)

    Good innit. :)

I started paying attention to other teams in '98 when Williams went all wrong. Not just in speed, but a red car?? Grr.

i think it's going to take some serious getting used to.. i may end up just supporting random drivers throughout the field.. rather than an individual team

(i have visions of me ending up supporting mclaren in a big way... will see how they treat Jenson ;) )

It changes your whole approach to F1... although I do still have a soft spot for Williams and I really think they'll do well this year. You could do worse than support them! Button's first time, Barrichello aboard..

Murray Walker said the paint scheme was like they'd thrown the logos into a cannon and fired it at the car :-)

hehe shall see how the season progresses, it's strange that my least favourite team has my favourite driver in it, and my favourite team now has two of my least favourite drivers in it. bad times.

    Do you have a postcode for that place? {Comment #296}

NG24 2RB. Precise address is Drove Lane, Winthorpe, Newark, Notts, England and it's close to the A1.

    The second last paragraph in your blog and wiki items is unfinished although it is pretty obvious where you were going with it {Comment #303}

How did I manage to miss that?!? Oh well, thanks for pointing it out so I could fix the sentence.
