A nice, relaxing Saturday in store for Sidepodcast Towers. I intend to spend a good hour or so reading through F1 Racing before getting on with the usual weekend stuff. What are you guys up to?

  • We saw the new and official Williams livery yesterday, with some new pictures released. The blue is much brighter than I was expecting, and we have yet to spot the new sponsor that was talked about last week. The big news is the flip ups by the cockpit though - how are they getting away with that?
  • Kyle Busch has pondered the possibility of joining F1 for a couple of years, just to have a bit of fun, before returning to the day job. As a NASCAR man, it would take more than a couple of years to get success, wouldn't it?
  • The speculation is hyping up again that the FIA are looking at the budget caps option as a way of cutting costs in the future. There's no confirmation of this, but I hope it's not true. I was in favour of budget caps before, but am now convinced they wouldn't be able to police it at all.

That should do it for now. If you were taking part in the Batracer 1986 game, you'll need the updated details for the game, which should be starting soon. Meanwhile, I'll see you in the comments.

Someone explain to me why in this picture they're holding up the FA cup?

  • Dank28/02/2009 at 11:31

Looks like they've realised they've put the pictures up a day or so early - been taken down now! :-D

  • Selidor28/02/2009 at 11:43

What are you guys up to?

Uni work, then perhaps some Mario Kart (64 - the best!) and takeaway pizza in the evening. Good times.

If anyone hasn’t yet seen it

It looks more like the Indian flag, so you can hardly say they've gone in the wrong direction :P

    Hi All,

Its past my bedtime and considering the issues I had posting while busy at work today, I really dont think now is a good time to attempt conversation.

    But I will anyway.

You may facepalm now if you like!

I miss far too many topics being covered here because I just don't get the time, so this may have been said many times before.

Can we just call 'the team formerly known as Honda' "Brackley F1" and attempt to force my thinking on everyone who visits here?

    Sorry. Goodnight.

  • Bassano Clapper28/02/2009 at 12:22

    Night Jeremy

Brackley F1 is kinda catching on already I think

    I still prefer Gonda ;)

  • lou28/02/2009 at 12:42

Brackley F1 is kinda catching on already I think

yep I think it is. I've certainly tried to call them that over the last week or so. 'Honda' does slip out sometimes though.

  • Selidor28/02/2009 at 12:43

    I still prefer Gonda

    haha, how does that work?

  • Bassano Clapper28/02/2009 at 12:44

    'Honda' & 'Gone' merged

freedom2surf, but we don't recommend them.

sadly it's an llu installation, which means there's no way of leaving unless you switch off the line and get bt to install a new one. somehow, it's fallen through the offcom regulations that stop people being tied to a single isp. so we is stuck.

The worrying thing is trying to work out what has been causing the issue. My worry is that it might have been the new version of JungleDisk doing something weird. Especially worrying because every download / upload means... quite a scary AWS bill!

Race Pro update - just in the middle of one of the F3000 contracts in Career Mode, currently racing at Macau. I've managed to find a forums which is providing setups for car and track combos for RP and I'm finding them a real help in terms of chasing faster lap times. Was online with a few friends in Formula BMWs and we had a blast running around Monza, Brno, Zandvoort and Brands Hatch with this setup I'd found for the car.

Kyle Busch is tempted by F1:

    http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=45181

Shame he couldn't test last year. I both do and don't want him in F1.

Scott, is there going to be a Race Pro demo any time soon? I heard not.

  • Scott Woodwiss28/02/2009 at 15:08

Scott, is there going to be a Race Pro demo any time soon? I heard not.

There was going to be one scheduled for release, but it kept getting put back so much the developers had no idea what was going on with it and eventually they must have cancelled it since it was probably only a week or so before scheduled release so there was no point. Anyway, why would they release a demo for a game that's already out?

  • Alex Andronov28/02/2009 at 15:48

I cant believe you’ve been with Demon scince 1995, they should have a plaque with your name on or something ;)

Well indeedy! I have used Demon since 1993 which was about 2 months after they started (technically they started in 1992 I think). But I was using my father and my shared account. In 1995 I could afford to get my own account. At the time the idea of ISP independent e-mail addresses wasn't even something people considered (at least I hadn't). There was no webmail as they didn't start to appear until 1996 with Hotmail. So many of my subscribed services have as their underlying e-mail address my demon.co.uk e-mail address. You can tell that Demon was early in that they offered you your own sub domain blah.demon.co.uk on top of which you could have as many e-mail addresses and even host your own website on the static IP address.

But yes I'm somewhat tied to them because so many things direct there.

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 15:48

I was wondering the same, but personally I'd like one as the lack of good damage is something that could put me off. IUf it's as realistic as it sounds though, then it could be awesome. I especially like how you can do qualifying, both online and offline.

Moving along slightly, is there a mod which allows online play for GPM 2?

Has it been brought up here that Bruno Senna is talking to Mercedes about a drive with... wait for it... DTM?

    http://www.touringcartimes.com/news.php?id=3173

    Interesting...

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 16:11

    Bah.

I'm gonna go on F1 97, and change the teams and drivers to current ones. So it wiould probably be, with 97 team - 08 team

    Ferrari - Ferrari

    McLaren - McLaren

    Williams - Williams

    Sauber - BMW

    Benneton - Renault

    Tyrell - Honda

    Jordan - Force India

    Prost - Red Bull

    Minardi - Toro Rosso

    Arrows - Super Aguri

    Stewart - Toyota

Some of the teams, like Toyota were started as an entirely new team (Toyota were IIRC), so I just randomly done those. I was thinking replacing Stewart with Honda might be better than replacing Tyrell, because Rubens was at Stewart.

  • Journeyer28/02/2009 at 16:12

Better to do Prost-Toyota, Prost left at the end of 01, Toyota came in at the start of 02. Not to mention that both were led at some point by Olivier Panis. Besides, Stewart became Jaguar, then became Red Bull.

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 16:15

Ah, thanks for that. Renaming is as far as I can go, but F1 97 is still the best F1 game on a console, so it'll do.

And you’re surprised because…? F1 has always seen much change in such short periods of time.

True. It's changed a lot even in the past 5 years. Jordan and Minardi gone. I don't remember teams like Pacific, Simtek or Forti in great detail, but others such as Prost, Arrows and the 2 I firstly mentioned, those teams I have fond memories of.

I also got F1 Racing earlier, yay. Nice circuits poster.

I'm loving the poster. I thought lewis came across pretty well in the interview too.

  • Lukeh28/02/2009 at 18:32

Oh and another F1 racing comment, the stuff about Renault and how the livery is setup i found pretty fascinating, always wondered how they do the designs and put them onto the cars so I loved that feature in this month's mag.

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 18:33

You could say the same with Minardi for people that got really interested in the sport post-Minardi, like Christine and Lou (2005 for them IIRC? And Minardi were pretty much done by then unfortunately). Yet Minardi are like Super Aguri, pretty bad teams in terms of pace, but they had great individual moments and are fondly remembered by many fans. That's what I think anyway.

I'm only just starting the 2009 preview bit now, probably won't be reading for a little while as I'll be sat here most likely and I can't cocentrate on a book while at teh compooter. I'm wild, I know.

  • Bassano Clapper28/02/2009 at 18:38

Minardi did have some staying power

Super Aguri.... I'll get back to you on that

    (Well, maybe Davidson, I s'pose)

Eh, 2003 was a great, competitive season. Also had Minardi getting P1 in an official F1 session for the first and only time in their history.

  • Christine28/02/2009 at 18:59

Ooops, sorry. If I remember rightly, you weren’t a fan of Minardi. Which would be my point.

I don't remember saying that, I don't have anything against them. I am rarely a fan of one particular team over another.

However, as you say, nothing about them stands out for me, which is your point.

  • RG28/02/2009 at 19:04

However, as you say, nothing about them stands out for me, which is your point.

It determines really if you like those underdogs, I liked Minardi, they were sorta my second team, mainly cos they were useless, but when they did something well, my god was it a special moment, like getting P1 in France 03

  • Scott Woodwiss28/02/2009 at 19:06

Meh, they only got it because both Verstappen and Wilson were the only 2 cars to get a proper dry lap in since I remember it was a bit wet that day.

  • RG28/02/2009 at 19:09

Meh, they only got it because both Verstappen and Wilson were the only 2 cars to get a proper dry lap in since I remember it was a bit wet that day.

And? Thats the whole point of being an underdog, you take advantage of the situation, you dont give a damn if its because everyone else did it in a wet track and yours was dry, you be happy because its gonna be one of the few times, if only, it happens

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 19:09

Wilson was underweight remember, so officially they only got P1. Not many times does a team end a session with their cars occupying both first and last positions.

  • Scott Woodwiss28/02/2009 at 19:13

And? Thats the whole point of being an underdog, you take advantage of the situation, you dont give a damn if its because everyone else did it in a wet track and yours was dry, you be happy because its gonna be one of the few times, if only, it happens

Yeah but it wasn't earned, it was luck of the draw. In the same situation, any of the other teams could and most likely would have pulled it off. Vettel's win at Monza last year was an earned victory because he managed to drive that car faster than anyone else could in the appalling conditions that day. The France '03 was certainly a milestone, yes, but personally it doesn't deserve as much credit as Vettel's win does because it was just taking advantage of the situation, not perservering and triumphing when everyone one was effectively on a level playing field. The same can be said for Barrichello's 3rd at Silverstone - good result, but they only got it thanks to Ross Brawn's tactical thinking.

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 19:16

Going by the same logic as you're applying with France 03, vettel didn't earn that fully either, as he took advantage of the more-levelled playing field. See what I mean?

  • RG28/02/2009 at 19:20

Wilson was underweight remember, so officially they only got P1. Not many times does a team end a session with their cars occupying both first and last positions.

Qualifying wise, your right, looking through the archives, I'm yet to find the last one where that happend, closest I've got is Japan 2006, with Ralf on pole and Jarno not setting a lap, but still 19th.

  • RG28/02/2009 at 19:22

    Sorry, 2005

It's very important to get the car id correct. Everyone who was around at the time remembers the Jordan 191 which was the first Jordan F1 car as one of the best looking cars of all time. Unfortunately it was first lanch as the 911 rather than 191 and Porsche to great exception and contacted EJ to express their displeasure.

Speaking of the loveable Irish rogue... He'll be interviewing Bernie at every race this year as part of his role at the BBC. Wonder how long it will be before he upsets him and finds he's banned from the paddock? :-)

  • Steven Roy28/02/2009 at 22:45

He was a wiley old fox when it came to negotiations.

I have told the story 100 times about when he got stopped speeding in his youth towing his race car. He thought he was going to get the book thrown at him and when he got back in the car his mate asked what happened. EJ says 'Yer man is collecting the car on Wednesday.' Not only had he talked his way out of the ticket but he sold the cop his car.

I thought my F1 Career Challenge disk was dead, but I just stuck it in after cleaning the laser lens and it works, YEEEEEEESSSSSS! Superb F1 game. It was unique to others, in that you played 4 real seasons, from 1999 to 2002. Started in 99, you have to pass tests to get your Superlicense. Depending on how well you do, you'll get different teams offering you a race seat.

When you get a drive, you'll be told before the race where your team expect you to finish, e.g. "we expect you to finish 7th". The better you do, the more your reputation increases, with better teams gving you offers. All the driver changes that happened from 1999 to 2002 happen here too, such as Salo for Schumi, Alsono comes in 2001, and even Arrows stop showing up for races near the end of 2002. The chief pit guy on your radio sounds just like Paul Stoddart too. You can buy upgrades with points you earn during the race, upgrades like engine performance, perfect reliability and others. I'll stop now, but it's fantastic

I'd say Scott has probably played it.........have you, Scott?

  • Dom28/02/2009 at 22:54

    erm…i don’t…

    It's a wig!

  • Dan Brunell28/02/2009 at 22:54

Yep. EJ wears a chest wig.

I still play it and love it. It is amazing how much better that game was compared to the previous EA version. It is amazing what you can do when FOM's lawyers aren't crawling all over the place.

I did have it say that there was an error earlier, but it didn't mention what the error was. Usually when I try to post it, it won't post the comment, but no message appears saying about an error or anything. I'm using Firefox 3 and am on XP btw.

Starting a team and reporting at the races. I think he is going to earn a couple of free trips via air miles.

  • lou28/02/2009 at 23:54

Yeah but he was a rookie last year and he was 29. Alonso had 2 titles by then, infact, I don’t know if he’s 29 yet.

    Alonso is 28 i think.

  • Joe28/02/2009 at 23:58

However Alonso's qualifying performance was good, at his first race he out-qualified team mate Tarso Marques by 2.6s. At the fourth round at Imola he outqualified both of the Benettons, a feat he repeated later in the season.[6]

In September, his manager Flavio Briatore had begun planning to place Alonso at Benetton. Briatore considered promoting Alonso for 2002, in place of his race driver Jenson Button, but instead chose to take Alonso on as a full-time test driver for 2002.[6] At the final round of 2001 at Suzuka he finished eleventh — five places outside the points but ahead, on merit, of Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s Prost (with a Ferrari engine), the BAR-Honda of Olivier Panis, the two Arrows and Alex Yoong (his new team mate).[6] Four years later, his team boss from the Minardi days, Paul Stoddart, described his race as "53 laps of qualifying".[9] He scored no points in the season.

Don't remember any of that but eh, nice.

i don't either. might have to dig through some of those videos.

wonder if the minardi featured on tv much?

  • Joe01/03/2009 at 00:04

Good call, I dunno. I like to think I'm a good F1 historian, but times like these remind me that I could be a lot better.

    2.5 seconds over a team-mate though, that's even worse than Sato-Ide at Australia 2006!

See how young he looks : O

  • Scott Woodwiss01/03/2009 at 00:11

I’d say Scott has probably played it………have you, Scott?

I have indeed and I do own it on PC, where it's called F1 Challenge '99-'02. Still rate it highly ;)

it's past midnight, must be time for honda news...

"There have also been suggestions back in the team has managed to land a title sponsorship with the rumours saying that this could be Emirates Airlines"

is this the first mention of an emirates link?

Did anyone else notice how RG managed to get Mr C into trouble and then immediately go to bed?

    Think so.

James Allen used the Arsenal - Emirates deal as an example as said TTFKAH could name the team after a sponsor, like Arsenal did with their stadium.

ahh, sneaky. must read that blog more carefully.

    First I have heard

  • Joe01/03/2009 at 00:38

I'd hate for it to be something like Emirates F1, or even to have the sponsor in the title.

    I be honest, Liuzzi or Fisi don’t stike me as Portsmouth fans, or even Mallya {Comment #50}

Fisi definitely isn't (he prefers AS Roma), Mallya's team is Queens Park Rangers and I have no idea what team Liuzzi or Sutil support (Liuzzi's because the information doesn't seem to be on the internet and Sutil because his site (which may or may not have the information) is not working at the moment).

  • Alianora La Canta01/03/2009 at 01:53

    I don’t remember teams like Pacific, Simtek or Forti in great detail {Comment #85}

I remember Forti, largely because there was a predictions game in the BBC Magazine with a budget and I used Forti to balance my budget. I quickly learned that cheap isn't always good...

  • Alianora La Canta01/03/2009 at 01:56

    To be fair, who was at that time. Schuey was dominating so much it was unbelieveable. {Comment #92}

I was - it was the first year I made sheets with information about what had happened to each driver through the race and kept them in one place for future reference. I'd been experimenting with the idea for the previous two years, but that was when it became serious. It's a habit I've kept and expanded ever since.

  • Alianora La Canta01/03/2009 at 01:58

    Eh, 2003 was a great, competitive season. Also had Minardi getting P1 in an official F1 session for the first and only time in their history. {Comment #94}

It was nearly a 1-2 until Justin Wilson's car failed a weight test...

    Speaking of the loveable Irish rogue… He’ll be interviewing Bernie at every race this year as part of his role at the BBC. Wonder how long it will be before he upsets him and finds he’s banned from the paddock? {Comment #132}

I don't think EJ will get a ban from the paddock from Bernie. I could envisage the BBC temporarily banning him mid-season (or at least obliging him to apologise) when he forgets to watch his words and says something unprintable live on air, but other than that I think he'll be doing that job until he sees something that he decides is more exciting... ...which given his love of talking could be a long way off!

    next time somethin’ a needs a remembering… ask r.g {Comment #182}

Or type out the entry at the time when you remember it (works better if you devote a whole entry to the topic) and time it to appear at midnight on the appropriate day. Then everyone can completely forget about it and the entry will still appear.

  • Alianora La Canta01/03/2009 at 02:23

    I find it funny that Bourdis has just one season behind him is 30, and Alonso isn’t even 30 yet. {Comment #194}

He nearly got into F1 at the end of 2002, at which point he would have been in the normal range for being an F1 rookie (23 in his case). Still older than Alonso, but since Fernando reached F1 when he was 19, that's not surprising.

  • Steven Roy01/03/2009 at 03:25

Or forget about Apple and get a Windows PC and use the calendar to remember things for you.

I bet the average Apple computer has a calender if you look hard enough. The iTouch certainly will, if it has an alarm facility.
