Friday at last, and the massive news week I predicted seemed to come to nothing. However, there were plenty of things to discuss yesterday, that will keep us going through today.
- It looks like the drivers will be paying the superlicence fees after all. It's not really a surprise, of course, the chances of a strike were pretty small. However, it does make me wonder what all the fuss was about? They must have known it would make no difference?
- In fugly news, Bridgestone have decided green is the colour of choice to mark the soft tyres from the hards. Without grooves to play with on the new slicks, we're getting green markings round the sidewalls. It's not pretty. But then, what about the new cars is?
- Also, don't forget to read Mr Roy's latest guest post about a certain Bernd Rosemeyer. Always a fascinating look into the depths of F1's history. If that's not enough for you, Ollie has a well-written post on Elio de Angelis that is also worth a read.
That should do it for today. Don't forget to let us know if you're doing anything super-exciting over the weekend, and equally you can let us know if you're not. I will see you in the comments.
Well, Raikkonen says the drivers will be paying. But there's a good chance that, as a Ferrari driver, he was one of the three who paid up before the GPDA position was reached and he isn't in the GPDA. So I wouldn't draw any conclusions from what he's said because he may not know that much about what the GPDA contingent are thinking right now.
williams have said that they were the first team to lodge superlicences:
"We just pay the fees, full stop. They're paid."
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73450
OK, now I believe Kimi (and Williams)...
bit of a pathetic stand off though, eh? one press release followed by complete capitulation :)
but hey, at least we now think that of Hamilton, Massa, and Raikkonen, only one has paid. so a strike would now have bigger consequences than originally thought.
not quite sure if i'm following that train of thought? how would it?
say massa was the 3rd guy to have paid. if there were a driver strike, raikkonen and hamilton would join it. they're 2 of the most famous drivers on the current grid. an F1 race without them would raise a lot of eyebrows and make a lot of people ask questions. all of a sudden, the pressure isn't on the drivers; it's on Bernie.
ahh, ok. i think in the article, williams have stated that they've paid up for x3 drivers (presumably the hulk needs to be available to race in an emergency).
In the context of the Autosport announcement, I now read it as the initial three drivers were all from one team and the other three drivers are from a different team (but the same one as each other). Bear in mind that anyone who is acting as a reserve driver must have a Superlicence if and when they are called upon to participate in a F1 weekend as a driver. It takes two weeks to put a Superlicence application through the FIA system, so the reserve drivers will at some stage have to get a licence if they wish to avoid a mini-standoff. Williams have admitted paying for all their three drivers and surely Ferrari have to be the other team because it's so pro-FIA.
bit of a pathetic stand off though, eh? one press release followed by complete capitulation {Comment #4}
I think the drivers had worked out that Max Mosley wasn't going to listen no matter how good a point they had. Not if Max risks losing a sliver of power.
But they lead FOTA, so I'm not 100% sure on that...
But FOTA haven't declared a position on the driver Superlicence, so I don't know whether that will effect Ferrari's position or not.
I can understand the drivers' position. If you pay for something you want to understand what you are going to get for your money. The FIA seems to have said the increase is to cover safety initiatives but what initiatives are the FIA putting in place? I do not have to pay for a license to work but I expect I would complain if I had to and the fee increased 10 fold and the only reason I was given was I would be safer at work but the people I paid the license fee to did not provide the workplace. So for me in this case it is less about the cost and more about the reason for the increase.
Erm, I thought the issue here WAS the cost? At least that's what some are saying. Kimi said the price needed to be "reasonable".
that's certain how the drivers approached it too. and i think that's a fair point. i actually agree with this and don't believe drivers should be paying so much extra and getting nothing in return.
however, i didn't think they'd be successful either :)
clearly they are all unhappy to be parting with more money, but the reason given was actually:
"As a principle, the drivers should not be taxed to fund the costs of others fulfilling their legal duty to the drivers. It is the teams' duty to provide the driver with a safe car, it is the circuit owners' duty to provide a safe circuit and it is the duty of the manufacturers to provide helmets, fireproof overalls, etc. fit for the purpose of safety."
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73168
& it's the duty of Max to make sure the FIA finances are in order and since he has screwed up so monumentally he went after perhaps the only group who would get less public sympathy than him.
agreed. what's amazing is that it took them so long to realise!
According to the press release the GPDA made, the problem was one of fairness. The offer to look at other ways for them to help close the FIA's funding gap implies that the amount being paid isn't the problem so much as the structure and/or manner of its imposition.
In librarianship, it is possible to do a certain level without a licence of sorts (known as Chartership), but the well-paid jobs for the majority of employers require Chartership. The document itself is free, but it is only valid in conjunction with CILIP membership. Nobody is charged more than £177 for a year's membership even if they earn a lot more than the national average (the amount paid is less if you earn below £17,000 a year at the time of joining/renewal). That reduction was due to a long-time campaign by people who felt they were charged too much money to be members but felt they had to because of the Chartership document. And this is despite members getting a lot of stuff for their money - I bet the FIA doesn't give Superlicence holders a bunch of magazines or discounts on training for the payment...
I am sure Autosport will give them free subscriptions.
I am doing 50km charity hike on Saturday so if you never ever hear from me again you know the reason :-)
Damn. I hope not all in day. The best I've done in a day is about 26 miles.
Good luck and be safe.
So from memory we learned the following things about KERS at the lecture the other night:
1) It isn't green for F1 - simply because the F1 cars will have the throttle on while they engage the system
2) It won't encourage overtaking - It is faster for a driver to use the KERS at the beginning of each long straight rather than save it up and use it to push to pass
3) However it could be the end of the Trulli train as it would allow a faster car to save up its advantage by driving slower behind the slow car and saving it's performance advantage and then using it for one burst
4) The most important advantage the driver will get is by using KERS as a form of engine breaking which will allow them to break up to 4 meters later
5) The driver doesn't engage the system to collect the energy (he only has to push a button to release energy it) so collection can be computerised allowing the teams to give something similar to ABS which they all used to do until the ECU limited it
6) The most important skill will therefore be ensuring that you have released enough energy to ensure you have enough space in your storage device to absorb the maximum energy from retardation
7) Imagine usually the best thing is to use your energy on the long straights, but at circuit x there is a complex of twisty corners (storing energy), a short straight (not enough time to use all the energy), which ends with a corner that is important for overtaking. The smart drivers could be using their energy through the twisty corners when it's slightly less efficient simply to ensure they can break the latest during the important overtaking corner.
8) The lecture was given by a flywheel manufacturer and he had a plea to Max to change the rules governing the amount of kJules that can be released in a lap - he said that the nature of the the storage requirement the FIA asked for means due to physical laws that a reasonably efficient device would produce twice as much releasable energy. And that because of this his company was under pressure to create a less efficient device because it would be slightly lighter
There was also some talk of connections to Prodrive. It wasn't clear if this related to their F1 efforts or something else. Clearly he wasn't saying who this system was for however I got the impression it might have been for Honda.
Anyway, as I say I think it was something like that I forgot to take a notepad so I may have missed something.
I'm adding a 9) and 10) as there are 2 green positives
9) The crowd at an F1 event use up vastly more CO2 than the drivers. But by the same logic football creates much more CO2 than F1. So getting positive information about KERS out to the public is really important. And something F1 can do well as people realise that KERS can be fast.
10) KERS will actually save some fuel because the teams will likely use it very aggressively during the slow in laps during Qualifying 3 and during safety car periods. However this won't be enough to make the devices carbon neutral of course (something that would be easily possible in road car use).
So Honda will be on the grid in Australia, I think that's a good thing. Apparently under the name of Brawn Racing, or something like that.
Hopefully watching Slumdog and Benjamin Buttons
Good luck mate, and stay safe and sensible!
Now they just need the 'brains' to go with the 'brawn', which has been sadly lacking of late!
Awesome stuff, cheers for that!
Your post has suddenly made KERS a lot more interesting to me as it will be used as a strategy tool and not just 'push to pass' :-)
I am still having Doohickey problems. Once a day I have to re-enter my data (On two computers, both using Firefox). Does the Doohickey hate Firefox???
I am afraid all in one day :-)
What kind of hiking and where? Feel free to plug what you are up to...
Gosh! That saves us having to cover it in the show :)
Perhaps Me won't be as pleased! I did think after I wrote it that it was more like a post... 10 things you didn't know about KERS.
If only I remembered I have a blog from time to time! Ah well ;)
well, crossing the hills of our beuatiful hilly Hong Kong Island, all of the hills :-) - pdf info here in case you ever feel bored around end of Feb, happens every year :-)
I said that when I first heard they were going to use it.
And that.
In response to the lack of greenness I suggested that they needed to ban refuelling at the same time, as KERS should be about saving fuel not going faster. Sadly, that's only happening because of an economic crisis not through any forward sightedness of the FIA.
The other issue is the way the rules prescribe how much energy you can use PER LAP. This is going to have a bigger impact on qualifying that the actual race. As point 2 says, you get the best use out of KERS at the beginning of the straight and where is that usually - the start-finish straight. This means you in effect have two boosts per lap as you use the first one at the end of the outlap in order to start the actually qualifying lap as fast as possible. So even if the difference between having KERS and not carrying the weight is negligible in the race, there is still an advantage to having it come qualifying.
That's how P2P is used in A1GP though? You set up the run at the beginning of the straight and blast by before the braking zone...
Ed Gorman on Honda Management Buyout:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/formula_1/article5812037.ece
A1GP have a set number of powerboosts you can use per race (I think it's 4 in the sprint, 8 in the race). Since you have one every lap in F1 as soon as you push to pass, the other car can push to stay in front.
That tactic is also used in A1GP ... 'push to pass' can be used as 'push to block'
So it turns in to a cat and mouse game until one of them runs out of pushes. That shouldn't happen in most races in F1. The exception could be somewhere like Shanghai which has two long straights.
We shall see I guess. A1GP with the limited number of P2P uses made it very strategic and I kinda liked that idea.
I will sleep in an igloo on a frozen lake.
Honda buyout seemingly a done deal - but is the sexy new team name true?
http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=Gravel_Trap&id=45175
Nothing would surprise now....
Rob
Ferrari have also been doing some straight-line testing:
http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/02/26/ferrari-changes-car-ahead-of-mclaren-test-clash/
Do they get their own "Major Aerodynamics Problems" rumour?
oooh yes :)
:D
Any bird labour though?
what??
:D
is the underground passageway wide enough for straightline testing?
It will be fun ... right?
*googles the word fun*
...
erm, no :)
why would you do such a thing?
I'll settle for Brackley F1, considering the many jokes that were bound to happen with Vurgin F1 :)
Although I'd have prefer Team Awesome. But i guess the guys are just being modest... :D
I quite like The Team Formerly Known as Honda.
F1 Racing has a pretty in-depth 2009 season preview this month - and, and... a FREE LEWIS HAMILTON POSTER/WALLCHART!
Things look to be on the up in F1 Racing land. Last month was rather spiffy and this month's (on initial flick-through) looks promising as well.
I'll buy that as soon as it arrives in Denmark then...
Just went to 4 shops including a tescos to find this months F1 Racing and nothing :(
What the H will they call the team anyway?
Well there's ya problem!
But they have a huuuuuuuge selection of magazines, yet not one F1 Racing even though I saw last months in there about a week ago! S'a conspiracy I tells' ya.
They might have a bum deal with that particular publisher?
Just wondering if anyone knows if there will be a test session with all the teams in the same place (or at least Ferrari, McLaren and BMW)?
Melbourne FP1?
Theres a 4 day group test in Jerez from 1st to 4th March, i think thats what you mean?
any speculation as to what max's up to now?
new press release says:
"...the FIA is preparing radical proposals for 2010"
"...the new regulations will enable a team to compete for a fraction of current budgets but nevertheless field cars which can match those of the established teams."
correct me if i'm wrong, but that's the stuff of fantasy? what proposal(s) could ever hope to achieve that?
was this expected? tis news to me, but i mighta missed a bulletin or three.
That's 'Group Test 3' I think, then I think most teams will have a private test ahead of Melbourne
There was a lot more information proposed previously, but I guess this makes it official.
Do you think F2 style rules to be adopted?
I trust we are not heading into a spec Formula, by all means make entry level affordable but don't punish the top teams when they're the ones doing the R&D paying/risking massively for new technology which the handmedown teams can grab for peanuts if Max has his way.
They're called customer cars aren't they?
Tyre compounds for the 2009 season:
ING Australian Grand Prix (Melbourne): Super Soft, Medium
Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix (Sepang): Soft, Hard
Chinese Grand Prix (Shanghai): Super Soft, Medium
Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix (Sakhir): Super Soft, Medium
Gran Premio de España Telefónica (Barcelona): Soft, Hard
Yes, you're reading those compounds correct...
http://www.bridgestonemotorsport.com/Bridgestone/en-gb/Championships/Formula1/
Friday seems to be making an effort to make up for the lack of anything earlier in the week.
TTFKAHF1 would be much easier to pronounce :-)
Phoenix F1?
They always did say there would be a bigger gap in the compounds, didnt they?
On a side(pod?) note, the 1986 Batracer game seems to have dank without a trace. Oh well, those 7 laps in a lotus 98T were pretty fun :P
it did rise from the ashes.
If they call themselves 'Honcedes' I would support them in a heartbeat :-D
-Meronda
-Hondacedes
-Merda
-Hondes
-What the H?
Definitely won't be allowed than one!
I did that one on purpose ;-)
H-Unit?
Triple H?
H&M?

Nice pic of Herr Vettel...
His helmet looks massive compared to his little face.
Bah! Mine didn't come with one. Mind you, I nicked my copy from the office so it serves me right.
So cutbacks are affecting you guys too? ;-)
Hi, guys…
Do you heard something about a brawnracin.co.uk/brawnracin.com been registered by a former BAR lawyer named Caroline McGrory?
If you try to register the two names HERE will see that both were already taken. What do you think?
Williams have unveiled their racing colours now. Along with a couple of new things...
Shark find either side of the cockpit....
Ugh.
Yeah what the heck? How did that get greenlit?
The livery itself actually looks alright, lighetr shade of blue goes well unle4ss that's just the lighting of the pics.
Not sure about those fins though...
They're not nice.
There is a problem with it - where are all the sponsors?
lol i've been referring to it as Brackley F1 for about a month now :) would be cool if it was true.
what wa wrong with the dark blue? it looked so much nicer.
RBS, philips and ORIS... that's pretty much all I can see. with RBS being their main sponsor and going in a year Frank will need to do some searching around me thinks.
sorry, i'm still laughing that every "leaked" shot turned out to be wrong :D
light blue is fine by me.
and think of what it's going to look like with the green strip on the tyres! :/
crikey just went upload a picture to the drop and it's already full of williams. nice work people :)
drop.io'd images that I've been emailed.
:D
i just know couthard is behind these:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/williams-fins-png
not literally of course, i mean they're not that big.
who's M&L advertising on the rear?
How are they within the rules??? They're exactly the kind of flip-ups that should have been banned!
Probably was a missed dimension of the car. Williams found the loophole.
where did you see that?
flibster dropped an image here:
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/01-jpg
maybe williams are highlighting them now, in order to raise the point?
Nah, they really intend to use that unless the FIA bans them.
apparently M&L used to advertise on the now non-existent barge-boards.
so, who's the mystery sponsor? i don't see anyone new?
No idea.
y'know, i think it might be an RBR car carrying the best livery of '09.
I've just checked the williams site for sponsors and noticed the back of the rear wing is going to have 'Race To Learn .org' on it. Is this something i've totally missed or is it something new? (sorry if this has already been discussed at some point or if there is a pic of it on drop.io - school has blocked drop.io)
link - http://www.williamsf1.com/car
it was announced during autosport i think (or least around that week). something to do with coventry uni, if i recall.
ah k. thanks. will have a look for some info on it when i get home. for the moment i must get back to this damn essay.
This has got me wondering now, what are we to expect for Brackley F1's livery? I'm assuming it'll be related to the main sponsor but I was just thinking there what possibilities it could be
For all we know Virgin could still be involved as a sponsor and Branson will have contacted Lou about her logo and that fantastic blood red livery that someone made last week based on the initial Williams car :P
Wouldn't surprise me - thats where I went and it's a very weird place.
My first lecture was indroduced by the prof saying "Welcome to Coventry, a city that was well bombed during the war. Not well enough though, as they rebuilt it."
Just gone to the autosport site - the Jim Bamber cartoon this week is funny as hell. :D
Also - nice article on Ron leaving too.
It's quite a good issue this week! I quite liked the article on how much motorsport around the world creates
Afternoon debate in the office today is if Vettel is the best thing since sliced bread that many in F1 feel he is..
Thoughts?
Me personally thinks he's good but I'd like the fanfare to calm down a bit and stop calling him a WDC already!! He might end up like Fisichella if we're not careful (blindingly quick to begin with then lame in later seasons).
Talking of Williams, Allianz seem to have been given a ticking off because they've removed the pictures of the "new" livery.
:-)
But Fisi needed 8 seasons to win... a lucky race. Vettel only needed a little over a year to win... by dominating in a Toro Rosso!
hahah :)
love it.
Yep..in short Fisi is lame!!
Vettel, he's good but the pro Vettel people on the team (i'm annoyingly netural!!) go very quiet when asked about his start to the season.....
While some of it was indeed due to nerves, most of it were not of his doing. Spain is a good example of that.
Fair to say you're a pro Vettel man??
Spain was harsh, especially for Heikki!
Yup. Could be the next Schumi... not quite there yet, though.
Looking at his 2008 start:
AUS: Taken out by Webber on lap 1
MAL: Fire/exhaust breakage on lap 40
BAH: Taken out by Super Aguri car on lap 1
ESP: Taken out by Sutil on lap 1
Any British GP fans/attendees keep watching this space for contact details, there will be some T-Shirts available to mark the last F1 race at "the home of British motorsport" All at a reasonable price!!!!!!
seems a bit previous.
Sounds like
Albers/DC/etc....
Only joking
Want to see him take a Ferrari seat, preferably alongside Kimi (but that's so another discussion lol)
Hmmm... I want him to be at Ferrari. Who to replace between Kimi and Massa, though? Hmmm...
I think he'd end up at BMW rather than either Ferrari and McLaren, he's had experience at the team, knows the blokes involved and that, and got a point for them.
I can see it going that way, Hope my boy Nick doesn't get pushed aside!!!
Massa without doubt, Kimi was bad last year and doesn't deserve the seat at the mo but overall he's a different class when on it. Push Massa and that annoying Ferrari mechanic with the beard out :-)
I don't want Nicky to go either, or Robert either, more likely when Robert leaves for one of the big two, which I don't want happening.
Another Nick fan!! Whoo hoo you just automatically got on my xmas card list....thought I was the only one :-(
I'd like them both to stay firmly at BMW, i'm desperate for Nick to get his maiden win this year. I suspect the honour of being the 102nd GP winner (that right?!) is betwen him and Timo Glock.
I love the guy. Brilliant, really, really want him to win.
Yup, Vettel 101st winner. I think it is, unless a mad race where Sutil wins it.
Anybody but Buemi
Think i'm a bit protective of old Bourdais!!
I'm a bit late listening to the group forum, but would like to add a few comments.
There was a discussion about testing the new USF1 car on ovals. There are hundreds of road coures in the U.S. Nearly every oval can be configured for a road course, not to mention tracks like Road America, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen and Mid Ohio. Homestead/Miami runs a sportscar race the same weekend of the NASCAR race. So there are an endless supply of tracks that USF1 can spend 2009 testing.
Secondly, it was a waste of money flying all the F1 stuff over to North America for one race (Canadian GP 2008). IF there is a USGP, it will be much more practical to have two races, thus returning the GPC to the schedule. That is unless of course, the USGP falls later in schedule, after Monza, it'll be likely very cold in Canada for the race.
As far as drivers go for USF1, I doubt you'll see Marco Andretti, because he's not even a very good Indycar driver, let alone F1. Danica Patrick will be in over her head. I think you'll see Jonathan Summerton get a seat and then probably an established F1 guy, not necessarily an American.
I thought that about Patrick and the IRL will not want it's main attraction to go elsewhere. She's already said she won't travel....lazy!
Not sure how well Kubica and Vettel will get along. Vettel will probably be leading the next generation at Ferrari.
I support Brackley F1?
Meh, I'll get used to it...
I can see a little 'Alonso' syndrome creeping into Kubica last year....kinda put me off him a little
cheers joe, that's very handy to know.
*googles jonathan summerton*
ahh, okay. is he any good then?
What about Justin Wilson? Our friendly Brit in the US?
Hey I would welcome a Brit on USF1. Indycar right now is very precarious financially. I mean with Milka Duno going to a top team because she's bringing 10-15 million of Citgo money with her, it's a bit wacky, I would say. Justin Wilson, Ant Davidson, Jensen Button, I'd take any one of them.
Jonathan Summerton is in the F1 preparation 'pipeline'. He's won in A1GP and I think his results are respectable. If he gets a year of testing before 2010, I think he'll do a good job.
Jonathan Summerton is a Florida boy, also. Don't really think that's factor, but I like it.
YAY, my laptop is all fixed. Turns out it was full of malware and the partition on the hard drive which allows Windows to start was messed up. Cost me £65 in total but I'd rather pay and keep all my data rather than have to send it off and possibly lose everything. :)
I've had that before, lost my entire 2006 season about 60GB in all of videos, races, podcasts, photo's etc...
Came very close to crying lol!!
It's an old message and never really sinks in till it's too late but a solid back-up is essential these days
Too much precious media to lose. Glad the lappy's back on the road for you Scott
It has come to my attention that not only is DT aware of this site and the phenomenon of Tremayning, but that it was a topic of discussion at the annual Williams pre-season media lunch!
Ooof.
Classic, we are SO influential :)
Indubitably.
Well, the hour is upon us: time to go for a quick one, which will inevitably become two.
I are very Jealous, having to pack and organise way too many things
at williams? that is awe.some!
the good chap has in fact been in contact, and thankfully has taken it in the spirit in which it was intended :)
it didn't fit into last week's chat though, but we'll cover it more on sunday.
enjoy!
Bugger, I'll miss that one.
Mr C, can you give the Arizona Phoenician's a warning that I'm on my way and hunting fellow SPC folk for partaking in the international sidepodtour meet-up :)
(Seriously, can you?)
can do. it's just the pesky problem of remembering, but i shalt do my best. hope you can find a way to keep in touch while you're out there, we'll miss ya :)
Thanks dude, will try to MMS something to the email address or via Giggles. Good job I don't have a smart phone yet. Not a lot of Wi-Fi in the desert roads out there - International data charges!!!
Phew, it's not just me then
http://www.tuaw.com/2009/02/26/tabs-in-the-title-bar-a-ui-design-trend-that-needs-to-go/
oh, but it's sooo cute when they pop out into a new window with a little bounce!
Haven't tried it yet, had heard it overwrites Safari 3.
Will have to investigate soon
not sure, i used it on vista :)
Mind your language please, too many impressionable youngsters on the interwebz ya know ;)
It's incorrect, but this ad made me smile (2nd one, near bottom)
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/02/27/apple_ramps_up_macbook_campaign_rim_folds_on_anti_apple_ad.html
I wonder how muchb Blackberry paid for about 2 seconds of Pink Floyd?
I use Firefox and don't have that or any other problem with the doohickey
Why?
Slumdog is ace, Benji I have yet to see but Fincher hasn't made a bad film yet in my eyes
Benjamin Button is a great film :)
If Nick Fry is indeed stepping away from Honda (pleasepleasepleaseplease) and joined USF1 it'd be fantastic next year. Fry, in the American team, vs Brawn, in the (essentially) British team!
aaah, lou, just the person i was looking for....
did you get a text read out on moyles this morning??
That looks a lot like an RBS blue.
erm...no sadly not. why what did it say?
me too, i dont have any problems ever
Doohickey has been exceptionally stable for me in the last couple of weeks.
Gavin, FF2 or 3?
Williams had race to learn on the launch car.
Is the past tense of shakedown really shookdown? I like it :)
Force India shookdown new chassis at nearby Silverstone
(Nothing interesting in that link, by the way, 'cept for the shookdown bit)
it was a lou from kent, who said she was proud of moyles or somethings because he's climbing killi (which by the way my brother got to the top of today :D ) and she does D of E etc etc. cant remember exactly, that was the gist of it
Quite a few people on Clive's blog have tipped him . Must confess I don't know much about him.
haha that's awesome. i must have been at school by then. nah sorry that wasn't me. sounds very like me though, although i've already finished my DofE :) your brother climbed Killi? wow that's amazing. :)
maybe i'll text in one day and see if i can get f1 or spc mentioned :P
We were hatching a plan the other day after the lecture to plug SPC on one of the BBC's phone-in shows during an F1 weekend. I suppose we should make a challenge with the 1st to succeed getting some form of prize/recognition
National coverage is a must, Australia weekend is surely a bonus!
Leo Laporte mentioned the other day when I was listening that someone has already written a hack to move the tabs
Battle of the Brains on BBC2 just asked a question about THAT woman.
it will be easier surely then cause it's early in the morning :) sounds like a plan. if enough of us text in i'm sure they will mention it :D
That is the correct F1 usage.
She's getting far too much coverage
Or just use Firefox, which I do prefer over Safari
We need to create the text equivalent of a Flash Mob :)
Time it via the live commenting
she is everywhere atm :s
I don't think it was too bad, you could tell he was frustrated, but he was in for the championship with two races to go so shoulda had more backing I think
Hey, I'm on vista and so far it hasn't blown up. Yet anyway.
Has anyone seen the new 'backwards' Indianapolis?
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/03/17/the-backwards-indianapolis-configuration-revealed/
They've taken out the best parts of the track, the left hander after the straight halfway through a lap that was following by the hairpin! I've no idea why they've changed it to that, it looks completely poiintless to me. Joe just showed us that now and I'm just still wondering what the point was...
Doesn't say if a certain Mr Tilke was involved though ;)
I was just about to mention it, Luke.
Sad times. Yet another great track (imo anyway) ruined.
But didn't it nearly end up out the window recently or was that just you trying to convince the same of Lou?
Thats for Moto GP isn't it? So, different standards there I think
No, that was when I had XP and to convince lou
that's from 2007?
She was on This Morning last week just as I woke up and turned the telly on to see her mention Lewis. Some would say it's a nice sight to wake up I suppose but nah, no thanks
And Vista is better than XP?
(picks self up off floor)
...man we should really read the dates on these things.
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2008/09/10/2010-united-states-grand-prix-rumoured/
It says there it's likely that F1 would use the same configuration. From the wording of that, it seems as though it's not something they can just change on a whim either.
Yes, but it's since been done.
Maybe he got it from GMM
Nah, I think it was more the lapop at the time
I hope when F1 goes back to USA they go to a real circuit and not the Indy mickey mouse track.
If I ever get my broken laptop up and running again I'm going to try the Ubuntu OS
your second link is from 5 months ago?
I still say F1 should race at Road America. Such a lovely circuit with the way it flows and rises and falls. Beautiful place to race.
it's not bad, but i've sadly concluded linux will never be ready for general consumption.
ubuntu is the best out there and it's still useless in comparison to leopard.
Or my Miami street track (tumbleweed)
Seriously, Road America or Watkins Glen, bring in the real men, tracks, what the call those things nowadays.
Agreed, I love Road America from both watching races on television there and from playing the track on various games. Just a good track.
he just got gmm all excited :)
That is a proper race circuit.
Mr C:
Up in Smoke IMDB page (Cheech & Chong film)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078446/
Obviously, their actions are not endorsed by this community ;)
I read somewhere that the Glen is far to run down these days to make it remotely worthwhile bringing it up to F1 standards. Shame it is a classic F1 track.
It's tainted by the death of Francois Cevert :(
Oh I see, sad that, was a quality track.
In the second link I posted, it says that it's been done.
<i>Indianapolis has been modified since it held it's final United States Grand Prix last year.</i>
Oh yeah, whilst your here Scott, have you got Race pro to work with online races yet? I swear the system is broke...
Everytime you go into a 'lobby' (or drive around the chosen track until you get enough people or when the game starts) then the online game just quits for me. You getting that?
I don't know if anyone here is interested but Lucas di Grassi is doing GP2 this season.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73457
and when you say "anyone"...?
New Red Bulletin available: http://uk.redbulletin.com/articles/magazine_archive/
F1 special.
Cheers Dank
Thats always a good sign.
Just anyone generally.
ooo thanks Dank :)
Yes I have managed to get some online races in, and I need to say - I've changed my opinions of the game. Now that it's opened up a bit more and I've driven a few more cars and circuits, I'm really starting to enjoy it now. I had a really good experience of the Formula BMW at Zandvoort in a player lobby with a couple of friends. I managed to get my times down and play with a few things on the setup to make it handle a bit better. My best time got to a 1'43.8 and there was another guy on the same time, so I just went for it on a flyer, got everything right and pulled out a 1'42.7 from nowhere! I was just amazed.
Still, I love the DBR9, R8 GT, F3000 and FBMW and I like Zandvoort and Pau. I don't mind Macau but in the top GT cars I can't help bouncing off the barriers every time I try to go even remotely quickly.
I did see the backward Indy. I think it's just the MotoGP track, though if it was used in 2005 there would have been no controversy.
There is a casino in Las Vegas, don't know which one, that when it was built has the capabilities of hosting a GP. I think that means paddock club and garage area other than pavement for the cars
hmmm, an the mere mention of an as-yet-to-be-determined-when podpanel, had no bearing on it?
Scott,
SInce the 86 BAT racer game has disappeared from everyone's lists can you re-activate it or set up a new game?
Never crossed me mind guv.
Just about to start my written piece on Senna.
I really think we need to promote it more since it's kinda gone a bit stagnant. But I'll get onto it later.
:D
You've reminded me now of the former terrible Las Vegas GP set in a giant car park in the 80's if I remember rightly?
Ah dear... it looked pretty bad from what I saw of it but I wasn't born then so I never got to see it in action.
I see in this week's Autosport that some bloke who won a Peugeot somethingorother championship got a test in the Le Mans car and used Franck's seat.
In case anyone is interested.
you should probably just start it.
Luke and Scott, up for some Grid later maybe? I don't have Race Pro.
Alright, but I will say this now and only once - I don't want any moaning from those who are in a single car team saying they're at a disadvantage.
I might play, I have a lot of work to get through + Wales vs France
As trashy as you can imagine. The car park at Caeser's Palace with Roman centurions all over the place.
Possibly the best example of Stuart's point yesterday that things were not always better in the past.
noted ;)
Wales v France or Saints v Hull KR
I hate decisions.
Set the game up. Post the details and say that it will start on Wednesday or Friday or whatever. And on whatever date you set we stick to.
Can we get a 'fugly news' jingle?
It may be needed a lot this year :D
Good thinking, will do.
can we say, i dunno, friday 27th around about 7pm?
the suspense is killing me :)
hahahahaha.
I thought you weren't even doing it?
i'm not!
Only because you're not taking part ;)
Mutiny at Honda. Shock horror.
To me the most interesting part of the whole thing is the little comment about the apparently imminent break up of the Ferrari - Philip Morris relationship.
http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=37124
the thing is, at some point, the actual f1 season's going to start :D
That's going to need another reminder isn't it? ;)
(Put it on 'the list')
Right:
http://batracer.com/-cj?&D&37543
Password is bourdais, those who have already joined are asked to take the same teams they did before.
We start a week from now. If it's not too much trouble can this be plugged in the daily post description every day until we start. If not then I'll try and post the details as one of the first comments when the new daily post goes up.
only 4 weeks away :) just 4 shorts weeks :D. i apologise now for how hyper i may be in the last week.
Damn we had a good setup as well.
I can only imagine the scene that I don't find the match, stay up to watch the race, then find out in the morning I do have one after about 2 hours of sleep.
you're starting another one?
I don't think anyone should be apologising for being excited about a sport they've been waiting months to return to be fair!
As you know I'm excited already and im sure a lot others on here are :D
Interesting point I just read
So the original one hasn't been deleted?
Again?? I thought we gave this loads of promotion last time.
That's not the interesting point by the way. LMAO!
What season is the new Batracer game?
you're yet to discover just how hyper i can be though :P
I can join the new one so I'm assuming the old one has been deleted
why can't the last one just start?
Ahh, good.
It's 1986, but I just need to check whether the original one is still up, since I might have confused what everyone was saying about it.
We waited to long to start and it kicked it off.
To be fair a lot of the reviews have slated the single player in favour of praising how good the online is, I've read in a lot of places that the single player is more preperation for online championships and races, so it seems that may be the point
I'm enjoying the game but like I said the other night, I see what you mean about the repetition at times and a few other little niggles. It bothers me how you can clip a car then seen to suddenly go half a meter away from the car in a flash for some reason in a clipping glitch. Still want to try online though, not sure why I've had those problems I've mentioned :(
It disappeared.
Yep, looks like it was inactive for too long and it just auto-deleted.
i can hear nick fry coming out with that same line in a couple of weeks time :D
ok. so can everyone sign up again today, and then maybe start... it... soon?
Okay, well, we might be able to squeeze in a couple of plugs for it. But this one better happen, or I end up looking like an idiot.
I also note that Alianora did well in a test session in RLB, Scott also doing well. Good luck guys.
Again, I'm not being nosy or anything, just the collective term of lurking I beleive.
I've found one rather annoying little niggle - you can't get any kind of slipstream off the computer cars, yet they can off your car. For me that's a massive WTF?!
The reason why I didn't start it was a) My fault because I plain forgot about it, too busy with other things and b) I didn't think it was fair for those people with only one car in a team to have to go it alone against two car teams.
Really? That's a bit wierd... It felt like I was getting plenty of slipstream in my races, especially the WTCC ones, but I'll take a look at that again tonight or tomorrow. If that's the case then that's a bit silly though.
Been and signed up
any guesses as to why ferrari might want to split with morris, rather than the other way around?
Classic point is at Macau. I can be following a car in front going at full pelt and nothing happens, so slipstream effect whatsoever. But if a car comes up behind me, they get a tow and sail past, or something to that effect.
ok. but as christine pointed out, now we just look silly.
i say get the thing going asap (preferably tonight).
It has disappeared from everyone's list.
Let's stick to the new one to avoid confusion
Probably not gettingas much dosh these days as Marlboro not being mentioned much. Maybe steering onto the healthier sponsor path?
Who makes traffic lights these days?
Loads as flash not PDF... :(
Damn
Logically the only reason they would give up the Marlboro cash is if someone else wants to give the more and doesn't want the tobacco association. Coca Cola would be a good example. There's a nice little rumour to spread.
You have to give people a few days to sign up.
excellent!
lux :D
Don't they make soap? :D
Ha ha, I think I need to convince Lukeh to create a Ferrari with a pit-stop Belisha beacon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belisha_beacon
I was wondering what had happened to the game, it just disappeared from my list of games.
Here's hoping we can actually get started this time.
Maybe they gould fit one of those to the roll hoops of all the cars as a KERS warning light.
Red Bull tested for four days this week at Valencia. Doing a shake down and going through a development programme on chassis #2.
And... Autosport will be re-launched on 12th March. The new logo looks a bit, strange, well 'thin' anyway. Expect a complete redesign overhaul etc.
Where's the new logo?
We have a full grid for Formula 2:
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73466
Oooh, never noticed the new Williams livery was released.
Too. Much. White.
In this month's F1 Racing magazine. Not online yet I believe.
Is it the one with Vettel on the cover? If so I have it so I can go look. Can't believe I missed it if it is!
there is a new one out. it's the season preview one :)
Ooh right.
Oooh, I think I might just need to pop down to the shops to get it then.
As Lou mentioned, the new one out is the season preview with Hamilton, Alonso and Kubica on the front. Out today.
i'm pleased the poster of hamilton has something else on the back tbh :) haven't had time to read it yet though.
And a poster of "Guess who" inside...
I am going to write in asking for my Kimi poster from last year...
I think it must have fallen out....
Do you mean like these? :P
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/pitstop-jpg
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/belisha-jpg
Wasn't sure if you meant around the pitstop or as a lollipop so I just went for the one that amused me more...
:D
i (heart) the second one :)
Mr C the Doohickey has found a new problem with me. it doesn't like f1break.com. i put it in the website opinion and i get a comment saying 'you must enter a valid web address'
Both work, well done.
Strangely, I was thinking of one above the air inlet - no idea why! :D
Are you putting in the whole http thang?
testing lou's web address.
I've had it as www.f1break.com for ages. but all of a sudden it doesn't like it. i've not changed anything. just opened the browser.
www.f1break.com
honestly not touched anything since tuesday.
if you add http:// like bassano said, it'll work. i'll have a think about the validation.
http://www.f1break.com
Works both ways for me
okay. sorry. it just struck me as odd that it suddenly just started happening.
Isn't it the Question of Sport F1 Special next week?
QoS just finished and it was not an F1 special
Hence why I said next week?
Thought the QoS was on the 26th, with the Inside Sport on the previous Monday. No?
is it?! :o
I've read this too in the newspaper, not sure if it's true
Why does everything clash with Rugby League?
record the Rugby, and watch QOS :D cause QOS is never on iplayer for some reason.
Someone said on here it was 2 weeks before the first round being broadcast.
I can only assume for licensing reasons because of all the sports clips but it's a shame it isnt on there :(
Nah, I'll do it the other way around. Watching the rugby not live feels different.
One of the reasons that Bernie wanted F1 on the BBC was because "they can do it better". IIRC he's not an internet fan, but a lot of people were looking to foward to the online coverage. It's nice that races will be on iPlayer, but for those outisde of the UK, it doesn't matter because it's a UK-only service. Not the fault of anyone but the BBC, it's bloody annoying.
I like the testing livery better. Much better.
Re: Honda. I'm getting to the point now where I am not believing anyone till there is a press conference with Bernie, Ross Brawn, and whoever. Until then, stop with it.
To Peter Windsor / Ken Anderson: It looks like you need some help with your website. If you are looking for someone to do this and new media presentations, marketing, PR, community outreach, ect... Please let me know.
what website?? :D
To be fair, the rest of the world doesn't pay the Beeb licence fee
Re: Honda. I’m getting to the point now where I am not believing anyone till there is a press conference with Bernie, Ross Brawn, and whoever. Until then, stop with it.
Have felt like that for all of 2009 I think, hurry up puh-leeeeease
Oops, that 2nd quote didn't quite work
I was about to send that message to USF1 via an email template on their site and then it crashed again...
Isn't it ironic.
they have worse uptime than we do.
Got an idea for a name for the team previously known as Honda. If they can find another investor named steel or a steel company.
Brawn and Steel Racing
(Muted Trumpet: Whhaaawhaawhaawhaaaaaaaaaaaa.)
According to the Daily Mail, the team will take Brawn's name. Brawn F1, anyone?
Actually, that's the fault of everyone BUT the BBC. I'm sure they'd love to broadcast it. But then they'd be competing with whatever your local broadcaster is and they wouldn't like that. Blame them for not having an online service, not the BBC who are not allowed to broadcast it worldwide.
Or simply, Brawn.
But to be fair, it is the Daily Mail
meh, not really bothered by the name tbh. as long as they are on the grid :)
Rather that then Fry F1. :P
*eye twitches*
"Away from the hectic world of Formula One Ross likes nothing better than to go fishing which is a hobby he loves almost as much as he does F1, a keen gardener also and in Ross's garden everything is definitely rosy!!"
Ah, just you watch - it'll be Trout F1. Or Hydrangea Racing. Can't decide which.
Wouldn't that be Titanic F1?
F1 Racing has a pretty in-depth 2009 season preview this month - and, and… a FREE LEWIS HAMILTON POSTER/WALLCHART! {Comment #55}
To be fair (or as a bonus, depending on your view of Lewis), there is a poster on the reverse of the Lewis one with all the circuits on, including some vital statistics and some brief descriptions of each. F1 Racing are trying to cater to more than one audience ;)
I'm seriously considering putting it on my wall, with the circuit side showing. I might just remember how many laps are in Sepang that way...
If it goes on much longer it will be called the one that got away F1
How about a trout with a rose clinched in its' mouth.
I would have said a pike with a rose in its mouth but that's bound to get Brundle into trouble.
:D
:D
Just went to 4 shops including a tescos to find this months F1 Racing and nothing {Comment #57}
UK subscribers generally get F1 Racing before it appears in the shops and I only got my copy today, so I wouldn't expect anywhere to be carrying F1 Racing on shelves until at least Monday, possibly a little later in the week.
how did dank get hold of a copy then...
you haven't, have you dank...?
i don't subscribe and i've got a copy :)
I saw it in Tesco today
ahh, rats.
It;'s usually available in wh smith near where I work on the Friday it says at the end of the magazine the previous month. Although I wasn't working today so I couldn't check there :P
i thought the man had signed himself up for another 12 months :)
i'm just sorting through all my magazines that i seem to have collected over the past few years. i don't really want to throw them away, but where to put them?...
ebay.
but i kinda want to keep them...
Big Yellow Storage will give you a few years worth of archive space :D
Well that's a tough one as you'd have to store them in something dry that was away from the light. Else, they'll just rot.
Do you get a big red truck to drive it to them? :-)
same, i have 2.5 years of Radio Race Car International and 1.5 years of F1 Racing....not enough space...
I give all mine away so someone else can read them.
Only if you have a friend named Patrick who works for the Royal Mail
He got laid off due to the economic slowdown :-(
ooo have found a solution :D i love organising the study sometimes :D
oh and ive got a new subscription to Race Car Engineering coming!!
i dont really have anyone that would want them to be honest
Not misappropriating company vehicles?
don't tell christine.
:D
i also wont tell her that due to tesco's points my years subscription only cost £15 :)
I'll take them off you if you don't want them...
they sell it in tesco?
no, but you can use tescos points to half the price
Well, every little helps
[sorry, couldn't resist]
Is it not a 10% discount?
i think we need a wiki entry for "best conversations" as well as best comments. because i want "big yellow storage" kept for posterity :D
Oh my god, I'll get my breath back now. What an ending to Wales-France.
Wales and France are gone?
dunno how much the discount is exactly, but it only cost £15-16 so im not complaining
:D
Someone else can do that, I'm too busy avoiding packing
haha. :D
Wakefield and Warrington wasn't bad either. Warrington are rubbish in defence, I'll tell you that much.
i'll put it on the list.
We should've taken bets at the beginning of the off season on how many times that'd be written :D
This may have been mentioned earlier but the Telegraph are saying that Jenson is taking a 50% pay cut on his £15m salary to race with Gonda F1
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/4841355/Honda-buy-out-gets-green-light.html
The new contract he signed with Honda was supposed to be for $24 million over 3 season. Who dreamt up £15 million a year. The guy is massively over-paid but not to that extent.
Practise runs complete. Then I remembered to to the driving style set up.
OOPS
I did used to - then I wrangled a few extra months out of them for free by haggling the subscription department :-)
It runs out this month though!
Sorry if this is old news, but did we chuck the 1986 F1 BAT game?
No, it just deleted itself since it was quite inactive for a while.
We just started a new one with the same car set. Scroll up the thread an hour or two and you should find the info.
DOn't tell people that. Tell them about the new game.
:D
I've just completed a race report for the series I manage in. Why did every darn driver have to make a mistake apart from ours? And we still didn't even get a podium.
Gonda F1!!! Loves it!!!
just testing.
At least that confirms someone is alive.
i am, but it didn't do what i expected it to.
Ooooh. Drama at the old Experimental Chamber
Maybe it is an automatic test.
I also note that Alianora did well in a test session in RLB, Scott also doing well. Good luck guys. {Comment #268}
That was the easiest test session I've ever done. All I did was put in an RP indicating I'd seen the test (which got a somewhat sarcastic reply and probably deserved it) and an RP in my RLB "blog" about how I'd got from the FIA Gala to the test...
For those who missed the earlier post a new 1986 BATracer game has been started as a replacement for the one which fizzled out before it started.
Right:
http://batracer.com/-cj?&D&37543
Password is bourdais, those who have already joined are asked to take the same teams they did before.
We start a week from now. If it’s not too much trouble can this be plugged in the daily post description every day until we start. If not then I’ll try and post the details as one of the first comments when the new daily post goes up.
When was Lewis sent to prison and what did he do to get there?
Does somebody else want my Williams seat? I just think that if I join a team like that, I'll let my team mate down and waste the opportunity...
Must've been aiding and abetting Bill
Is the correct answer Nelsinho Piquet?
:D
The thought did cross my mind. I am the Nelson Piquet Jnr. of BATracer :-(
Look, my name's got a plus sign again. The @ sign in my email was replaced by a percent 40 as well, but the doohickey wouldn't let me post without changing it back
Gavin, you can't be that bad.
Maybe the Nakajima?
Well if I'm the Takuma Sato of it
We may have to call the Doohickey "HAL" soon if this crazy stuff continues
I'm sorry, I can't do that Dave...
For some reason, I follow Scott's guide and I end up doing badly. Quite frankly I'd rather play Mario Kart or rFactor...!
Can you imagine at the end of a debrief show:
Dave, what are you doing Dave? :D
You think Piquet is worse than Nakajima????
Nakajima played 20 man bowling in his first pit stop!!!
I can't see rFactor now and not think of RG singing YMCA on Sunday
At least he improved, a little :)
Worse, it could be Holly from Red Dwarf - Dave, everybody's dead Dave...
Nelson Piquet was a better driver in 1986. You should give it a go. He came close to winning the 86 championship.
I'm only confuggled with that.
It’s an old message and never really sinks in till it’s too late but a solid back-up is essential these days {Comment #146}
Unlike my back-up system. I had all my data on two hard drives and the most critical files backed up on my PDA as well and still came within a millimetre of losing everything this week.
The story began at the start of last week when my secondary hard drive failed. I didn't panic because it was purely a backup drive - after the drive was disconnected, everything except the re-writer worked fine (because the re-writer no longer had anything to connect to).
However, it took a little longer than expected to get hold of a replacement and yesterday it looked like my PDA might have been on its way out. Turned out that the SIM had got a bit of static on it and it was blocking parts of the system from working. The till staff was surprised that the five-year-old SIM was working until four hours before he saw it and almost as surprised to find there was no permanent damage to either the SIM or the PDA. But it was a close call.
Suddenly, I had an urge to get everything backed up ASAP. This morning, Dad located a suitable replacement drive, fitted it... ...and suddenly none of my drives worked. Several hours of fiddling around later, it looks like the primary drive will need to be wiped and re-installed. Luckily, there was a tiny (3GB) spare drive hanging around (two other spare drives were tried but the system didn't like them). An operating system and some networking protocols were installed and I am currently copying everything to another computer in the network because it's my final hope of keeping the data I've got (apart from the few hundred megabytes of critical stuff on the PDA).
Some of the data is from 1997, which shows how well the backup systems have worked in the past. Still, getting the backup systems working this time has been fraught...
even Peterson?
I am taking this blogging thing too seriously.
I just took my lunch to do a cost comparision of wages, taxes, and material costs comparing North Carolina with the UK, Germany, and Italy. I will not share too much but the one thing that did suprise me.
UK > or = Germany = North Carolina > Italy in cost of an average employee for an employer overall.
Sounds about right
Yes, even Peterson.... They're all dead, Dave.
Ah smeg!
Not Kochanski? Kochanski can't be dead.
Which makes me think, how much cost will having a Spanish or Italian forward base and travel. Especially if energy prices spike again?
This week's Autosport has a formula money feature covering some costs and comparison of F1 with NASCAR, GP2 etc
one more test
Via xkcd.com comes a new diversion, simple Wikipedia - Wikipedia written in simple English. Here's the F1 article:
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_1
I think it could be improved a little, perhaps with some information on KERS based on either the recent podcast "KERS for five year olds" or the lecture the other night.
She is dead too, but will come back looking like Chloë Annett and make you wish she had stayed dead.
It has come to my attention that not only is DT aware of this site and the phenomenon of Tremayning, but that it was a topic of discussion at the annual Williams pre-season media lunch! {Comment #147}
Good for Sidepodcast. Hope David doesn't mind his catchphrase (or is that catchdelivery?) being used so much here :)
I like http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page which is usually a tad absurd and admittedly false.
(But usually not safe for work too)
Has someone killed F1 minute?
Is the past tense of shakedown really shookdown? I like it {Comment #174}
Yes. It's nice to see newspeople being creative with their words without making the whole piece sound ridiculous...
Must have the same hosts as usf1
she was proud of moyles or somethings because he’s climbing killi (which by the way my brother got to the top of today {Comment #175}
Jon Waldock, congratulations to your brother!
okay, think this might actually be working?
just experimenting, but a while back we used to have sidepodcast comments pinging identi.ca every time a new one was posted. it was a bit of a flaky installation and eventually we switched it off.
trying it again now, and it needs a bit more work, but you can now subscribe at to either of the following (both contain the same):
http://identi.ca/sidepodcasttalk
https://twitter.com/sidepodcasttalk
the comments are anonymous and are limited to 120 characters. additionally you can't yet reply on either and expect the comment to appear on sidepodcast.com (although that's in the pipeline too).
please do yell if you think it's useful / useless.
oops. mysql went bang. am rebooting it now, cheers.
Mr C, you're going all html on us again ;)
It was confusing me tha Twhirl kept beeping with a new message and it was from me.
I can imagine it could get a bit annoying if it pings every time a new comment appears.
hehe. f1m usually has pretty good uptime. not sure what went wrong, will peek in a bit.
you may want to unsubscribe from http://identi.ca/sidepodcasttalk if it does.
christine can't see the point either, but i quite like the idea. it's easy to switch off if no-one uses it though.
I haven't subscribed to sidepodcasttalk
but I am getting the dents.
Apparently I had subscribed. Don't remember signing up for that. I have unsubscribed just now.
He's not that clever :)
I guess there's only so much room with all that F1 data in there ;)
With reference to the BATRacer game:
I hope BATRacer is actually working properly on my computer by then. I haven't been able to play it properly for the past 24 hours (or at least those of them that I've had a working computer) because when I've clicked anything in the "Garage" or "Season" tabs, nothing has happened. This is significant because I can't test or strategise at all.
This is the third time BATRacer has broken in the middle of a public season. The previous two times, the only fix was to wait a couple of months until BATRacer decided to spontaneously behave again.
Like I said, Peter and Ken, give me a holla. I can hook you boys up phat!
Not the fault of anyone but the BBC {Comment #325}
The BBC gets enough stick for the bandwidth iPlayer uses in the UK and it has to allow that because of the £150m it received from the government to make and maintain the service. I don't think UK ISPs would allow government ministers to allow BBC to make iPlayer worldwide (even on a subscription basis) because BT wouldn't be able to upgrade the network to carry the extra load fast enough for their liking.
For that matter, if iPlayer was open to non-UK people, Bernie probably wouldn't have allowed the BBC to put anything online. Otherwise he'd lose precious (to him) revenue from the other broadcasters.
As is often the cas with these things, the blame is complex. It's still not a good situation though - a service allowing anyone to pay a representative figure to access BBC online content wherever they lived would be a great thing, and barriers to it chafe.
i’m just sorting through all my magazines that i seem to have collected over the past few years. i don’t really want to throw them away, but where to put them?…
I've got a similar problem. I've been told off because apparently the shelf containing my F1 Racings and Autosports now has a "dangerous" amount of weight on them. The trouble being that I refer to them quite frequently and my room has nearly every horizontal surface covered in paper-based products already (as well as some that aren't). Most of which is still useful to me in some way.
This may have been mentioned earlier but the Telegraph are saying that Jenson is taking a 50% pay cut on his £15m salary to race with Gonda F1 {Comment #383}
He's not getting the remainder made up with Tesco points is he? (Sorry, but the preceding few comments made that the obvious initial response).
Seriously, good on Jense to cut his salary to help his colleagues out at this difficult time.
More Monty Python news (kinda)
Brian's love interest 'Judith' is now Mayor of Aberystwyth
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/mid/7915623.stm
Pretty old news though? Good story though.
True, more trivia than news
If they show the film in the town, a large percentage of it's dwellers will have seen the mayor nude. That's odd
You guys need to see this, i've been searching for a project as im getting back into rocketry, tonight i fond this...

all i can say is....i want one
me too!
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!
I bet no-one has a space shuttle formation team.
!!
Well, we have four space shuttles over here. The U.S. Government is going deeper and deeper in debt like there is no tommorow. Why not. I'll get on the horn with my reps.
I'm up to the part where the thunder and lightning disrupts the German GP of 2000, its effectively radio.
Jon was looking for a new project so may as well aim high.
NASA has already offered them for sale
Sorry about using "our." I ment "my." Typical American egocentric mistake.
Just heard an awesome Panda related pickup line:
Boy: How much does a Panda weigh?
Girl: I don't know
Boy: Enough to break the ice - hi i'm xxxxxxxx
Oops -that was meant to be a polar bear so it's not really relevant anyway.
Im at work and having a shocker!
No problem. You may have some success because I haven't heard of any offers being made so far. Still given that there are still about a dozes shuttle flights scheduled and each one seems to have two months of delays once it reaches the pad it make take a while before they deliver.
christine's response:
"why is the panda on ice?"
:D
worst.pickup.line.ever.
see retraction above
need to put brain intogear before typing
funny how i heard xxxx bear and thought panda
:D
it begins with 'p' :)
How much does a panda weigh?
Not enough to break the ice.
"why with the ice, why?"
i'm not sure this is working :)
I've heard and tried worse.
she'd like to hear them :)
Why am I screaming at the computer when watching a race 9 year old?
'Put wets on, no, what are you doing you muppet, see, you go off the track'
What does a raccoon weigh? :D
...
go on.
i've missed something. are ya live commenting historical races?
we were going to try that weren't we, is it fun?
Nah, something for me blog which will hopefully be up tomorrow.
ahh cool. do plug.
Will do.
Walked into that one...
Let's see...
The worse one I've heard:
"Hi, You may not know my name now, but you will be screaming it later."
My friend got punched by the lady's boyfriend sitting next to her. I spent the night in the emergency room with him.
The one I've used.
"Hi, I'm Dan. I've had all my shots and don't have any kids... that I know of."
I my defense I was drunk, it was my birthday, and my friends practically carried me to the girl. Needless to say, she laughed and walked away.
I've offically given up going to bars to meet people.
Sorry, if those weren't blog friendly but you asked.
that i did.
So...ah... what's going on with Honda?
they're about to get banned for bringing the sport into disrepute... probably.
honda news is getting like google ads. you see it on the screen, but it no longer registers :)
Topic of discussion sucessfully changed.
:D
I thought there was going to be a follow up line like with the panda.
Doesn't lclt usually come up with how many new posts there have been?
in the top tabs? yeah, should do. is it not working?
Mine is working
No. Strange, missed the comments since my last one.
the counter display is triggered by the loss of focus to a tab / window. it might be that you managed to leave without it triggering, but i've no idea how :)
No idea what that means at 2:30 in the morning, but all I know is that its working now.
it means you're too damn clever for it ;)
yay!
but not clever enough to know why you are so clever.
have we mentioned kyle busch yet? love this quote:
"I think I’d still be young enough that if I could win a championship by 25, go run Formula 1 for a few years, be back by 28."
ooohkay then :)
http://hamptonroads.com/2009/02/kyle-busch-f1-intriguing-not-right-time
I hope he does put two seasons aside for F1. He may find that gives him one year too many.
he's factored in a gap year.
On the pick up lines I really like this one (which may have been from Adam or Joe [from Adam and Joe]):
It's rather sweeter than most of them. But I am almost certain that no pick-up line in history has ever worked.
Ooooh an challenge....
Walk up to girl with a cloth in your hand and say...
"Does this smell like chloroform to you?"
"You've been a very bad girl. Go to my room!"
"If I flip a coin, what are my chances of getting head?"
"Hi. I suffer from amnesia. Do I come here often?"
"Have you always been this cute, or did you have to work at it?"
"Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?"
"Be unique. Be different. Say yes."
(give the person a bottle of tequila) "Drink this, then call me when you're ready."
My personal favourite...
"Greetings and salivations"
I think it's obvious why I no longer drink alcohol. :D
Arrrrgggh! MY EYES!
http://club.forceindiaf1.com/forceindiaf1/gallery/view_gallery.one?pid=60524709
......Welll......erm......at least it's got some green on it.
Please tell me why Fisi and Tonio are holding the Barclays Premiership trophy?!?!
Because Sutil doesn't like football. ;)
Speaking of Sutil, that haircut makes him look like an absolute clot.
F1 about to get "rowdy" in the future?
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73468
Yup.
Now I've converted the images to greyscale to protect my eyesight. There is a couple of interesting touches.
The rear view mirrors are mounted interestingly - going to make it a pig to get in and out of the car - but they could be a useful little flow conditioner or even produce a small amount of downforce.
Also, the sidepod winglets come are nicely shaped too. But the main one I have spotted is the rear of the car... Its very nicely packaged, kinda a bit like a the Renault rear end with the rollover, but the exhausts are essentially shrinkwrapped by the looks of it.
Also, how flat is the top surface of the nose....
Unfortunately, it will probably drive as well as it looks
Now we are getting somewhere, just cover it in green and orange and I'll be a happy kid
Now we are getting somewhere, just cover it in green and orange and I’ll be a happy kid {Comment #518}
It is green and orange (and white), so I guess you're happy :)
I like this livery too.
