Friday at last, and the massive news week I predicted seemed to come to nothing. However, there were plenty of things to discuss yesterday, that will keep us going through today.

  • It looks like the drivers will be paying the superlicence fees after all. It's not really a surprise, of course, the chances of a strike were pretty small. However, it does make me wonder what all the fuss was about? They must have known it would make no difference?
  • In fugly news, Bridgestone have decided green is the colour of choice to mark the soft tyres from the hards. Without grooves to play with on the new slicks, we're getting green markings round the sidewalls. It's not pretty. But then, what about the new cars is?
  • Also, don't forget to read Mr Roy's latest guest post about a certain Bernd Rosemeyer. Always a fascinating look into the depths of F1's history. If that's not enough for you, Ollie has a well-written post on Elio de Angelis that is also worth a read.

That should do it for today. Don't forget to let us know if you're doing anything super-exciting over the weekend, and equally you can let us know if you're not. I will see you in the comments.

Well, Raikkonen says the drivers will be paying. But there's a good chance that, as a Ferrari driver, he was one of the three who paid up before the GPDA position was reached and he isn't in the GPDA. So I wouldn't draw any conclusions from what he's said because he may not know that much about what the GPDA contingent are thinking right now.

williams have said that they were the first team to lodge superlicences:

"We just pay the fees, full stop. They're paid."

but hey, at least we now think that of Hamilton, Massa, and Raikkonen, only one has paid. so a strike would now have bigger consequences than originally thought.

not quite sure if i'm following that train of thought? how would it?

say massa was the 3rd guy to have paid. if there were a driver strike, raikkonen and hamilton would join it. they're 2 of the most famous drivers on the current grid. an F1 race without them would raise a lot of eyebrows and make a lot of people ask questions. all of a sudden, the pressure isn't on the drivers; it's on Bernie.

  • me27/02/2009 at 01:39

ahh, ok. i think in the article, williams have stated that they've paid up for x3 drivers (presumably the hulk needs to be available to race in an emergency).

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2009 at 01:40

In the context of the Autosport announcement, I now read it as the initial three drivers were all from one team and the other three drivers are from a different team (but the same one as each other). Bear in mind that anyone who is acting as a reserve driver must have a Superlicence if and when they are called upon to participate in a F1 weekend as a driver. It takes two weeks to put a Superlicence application through the FIA system, so the reserve drivers will at some stage have to get a licence if they wish to avoid a mini-standoff. Williams have admitted paying for all their three drivers and surely Ferrari have to be the other team because it's so pro-FIA.

I think the drivers had worked out that Max Mosley wasn't going to listen no matter how good a point they had. Not if Max risks losing a sliver of power.

But they lead FOTA, so I'm not 100% sure on that...

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2009 at 01:47

But FOTA haven't declared a position on the driver Superlicence, so I don't know whether that will effect Ferrari's position or not.

  • Graham27/02/2009 at 02:00

I can understand the drivers' position. If you pay for something you want to understand what you are going to get for your money. The FIA seems to have said the increase is to cover safety initiatives but what initiatives are the FIA putting in place? I do not have to pay for a license to work but I expect I would complain if I had to and the fee increased 10 fold and the only reason I was given was I would be safer at work but the people I paid the license fee to did not provide the workplace. So for me in this case it is less about the cost and more about the reason for the increase.

Erm, I thought the issue here WAS the cost? At least that's what some are saying. Kimi said the price needed to be "reasonable".

  • me27/02/2009 at 02:15

So for me in this case it is less about the cost and more about the reason for the increase.

that's certain how the drivers approached it too. and i think that's a fair point. i actually agree with this and don't believe drivers should be paying so much extra and getting nothing in return.

    however, i didn't think they'd be successful either :)

  • me27/02/2009 at 02:19

Erm, I thought the issue here WAS the cost? At least that’s what some are saying. Kimi said the price needed to be “reasonable”.

clearly they are all unhappy to be parting with more money, but the reason given was actually:

"As a principle, the drivers should not be taxed to fund the costs of others fulfilling their legal duty to the drivers. It is the teams' duty to provide the driver with a safe car, it is the circuit owners' duty to provide a safe circuit and it is the duty of the manufacturers to provide helmets, fireproof overalls, etc. fit for the purpose of safety."

& it's the duty of Max to make sure the FIA finances are in order and since he has screwed up so monumentally he went after perhaps the only group who would get less public sympathy than him.

agreed. what's amazing is that it took them so long to realise!

  • Alianora La Canta27/02/2009 at 02:46

According to the press release the GPDA made, the problem was one of fairness. The offer to look at other ways for them to help close the FIA's funding gap implies that the amount being paid isn't the problem so much as the structure and/or manner of its imposition.

In librarianship, it is possible to do a certain level without a licence of sorts (known as Chartership), but the well-paid jobs for the majority of employers require Chartership. The document itself is free, but it is only valid in conjunction with CILIP membership. Nobody is charged more than £177 for a year's membership even if they earn a lot more than the national average (the amount paid is less if you earn below £17,000 a year at the time of joining/renewal). That reduction was due to a long-time campaign by people who felt they were charged too much money to be members but felt they had to because of the Chartership document. And this is despite members getting a lot of stuff for their money - I bet the FIA doesn't give Superlicence holders a bunch of magazines or discounts on training for the payment...

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2009 at 06:19

So from memory we learned the following things about KERS at the lecture the other night:

    1) It isn't green for F1 - simply because the F1 cars will have the throttle on while they engage the system

    2) It won't encourage overtaking - It is faster for a driver to use the KERS at the beginning of each long straight rather than save it up and use it to push to pass

    3) However it could be the end of the Trulli train as it would allow a faster car to save up its advantage by driving slower behind the slow car and saving it's performance advantage and then using it for one burst

    4) The most important advantage the driver will get is by using KERS as a form of engine breaking which will allow them to break up to 4 meters later

    5) The driver doesn't engage the system to collect the energy (he only has to push a button to release energy it) so collection can be computerised allowing the teams to give something similar to ABS which they all used to do until the ECU limited it

    6) The most important skill will therefore be ensuring that you have released enough energy to ensure you have enough space in your storage device to absorb the maximum energy from retardation

    7) Imagine usually the best thing is to use your energy on the long straights, but at circuit x there is a complex of twisty corners (storing energy), a short straight (not enough time to use all the energy), which ends with a corner that is important for overtaking. The smart drivers could be using their energy through the twisty corners when it's slightly less efficient simply to ensure they can break the latest during the important overtaking corner.

    8) The lecture was given by a flywheel manufacturer and he had a plea to Max to change the rules governing the amount of kJules that can be released in a lap - he said that the nature of the the storage requirement the FIA asked for means due to physical laws that a reasonably efficient device would produce twice as much releasable energy. And that because of this his company was under pressure to create a less efficient device because it would be slightly lighter

There was also some talk of connections to Prodrive. It wasn't clear if this related to their F1 efforts or something else. Clearly he wasn't saying who this system was for however I got the impression it might have been for Honda.

Anyway, as I say I think it was something like that I forgot to take a notepad so I may have missed something.

  • Alex Andronov27/02/2009 at 06:51

    I'm adding a 9) and 10) as there are 2 green positives

    9) The crowd at an F1 event use up vastly more CO2 than the drivers. But by the same logic football creates much more CO2 than F1. So getting positive information about KERS out to the public is really important. And something F1 can do well as people realise that KERS can be fast.

    10) KERS will actually save some fuel because the teams will likely use it very aggressively during the slow in laps during Qualifying 3 and during safety car periods. However this won't be enough to make the devices carbon neutral of course (something that would be easily possible in road car use).

    1. It isn’t green for F1 - simply because the F1 cars will have the throttle on while they engage the system

I said that when I first heard they were going to use it.

    2. It won’t encourage overtaking - It is faster for a driver to use the KERS at the beginning of each long straight rather than save it up and use it to push to pass

    And that.

    10. KERS will actually save some fuel

In response to the lack of greenness I suggested that they needed to ban refuelling at the same time, as KERS should be about saving fuel not going faster. Sadly, that's only happening because of an economic crisis not through any forward sightedness of the FIA.

The other issue is the way the rules prescribe how much energy you can use PER LAP. This is going to have a bigger impact on qualifying that the actual race. As point 2 says, you get the best use out of KERS at the beginning of the straight and where is that usually - the start-finish straight. This means you in effect have two boosts per lap as you use the first one at the end of the outlap in order to start the actually qualifying lap as fast as possible. So even if the difference between having KERS and not carrying the weight is negligible in the race, there is still an advantage to having it come qualifying.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/02/2009 at 09:30

    2. It won’t encourage overtaking - It is faster for a driver to use the KERS at the beginning of each long straight rather than save it up and use it to push to pass

That's how P2P is used in A1GP though? You set up the run at the beginning of the straight and blast by before the braking zone...

That’s how P2P is used in A1GP though? You set up the run at the beginning of the straight and blast by before the braking zone…

A1GP have a set number of powerboosts you can use per race (I think it's 4 in the sprint, 8 in the race). Since you have one every lap in F1 as soon as you push to pass, the other car can push to stay in front.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/02/2009 at 09:40

That tactic is also used in A1GP ... 'push to pass' can be used as 'push to block'

  • Maverick27/02/2009 at 09:43

That tactic is also used in A1GP … ‘push to pass’ can be used as ‘push to block’

So it turns in to a cat and mouse game until one of them runs out of pushes. That shouldn't happen in most races in F1. The exception could be somewhere like Shanghai which has two long straights.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)27/02/2009 at 09:50

We shall see I guess. A1GP with the limited number of P2P uses made it very strategic and I kinda liked that idea.

  • Selidor27/02/2009 at 12:24

Yes, you’re reading those compounds correct…

They always did say there would be a bigger gap in the compounds, didnt they?

On a side(pod?) note, the 1986 Batracer game seems to have dank without a trace. Oh well, those 7 laps in a lotus 98T were pretty fun :P

it did rise from the ashes.

Do you heard something about a brawnracin.co.uk/brawnracin.com been registered by a former BAR lawyer named Caroline McGrory?

If you try to register the two names HERE will see that both were already taken. What do you think?

RBS, philips and ORIS... that's pretty much all I can see. with RBS being their main sponsor and going in a year Frank will need to do some searching around me thinks.

Nah, they really intend to use that unless the FIA bans them.

  • me27/02/2009 at 14:26

apparently M&L used to advertise on the now non-existent barge-boards.

so, who's the mystery sponsor? i don't see anyone new?

  • Lukeh27/02/2009 at 14:37

This has got me wondering now, what are we to expect for Brackley F1's livery? I'm assuming it'll be related to the main sponsor but I was just thinking there what possibilities it could be

For all we know Virgin could still be involved as a sponsor and Branson will have contacted Lou about her logo and that fantastic blood red livery that someone made last week based on the initial Williams car :P

Wouldn't surprise me - thats where I went and it's a very weird place.

My first lecture was indroduced by the prof saying "Welcome to Coventry, a city that was well bombed during the war. Not well enough though, as they rebuilt it."

It's quite a good issue this week! I quite liked the article on how much motorsport around the world creates

Afternoon debate in the office today is if Vettel is the best thing since sliced bread that many in F1 feel he is..

    Thoughts?

Me personally thinks he's good but I'd like the fanfare to calm down a bit and stop calling him a WDC already!! He might end up like Fisichella if we're not careful (blindingly quick to begin with then lame in later seasons).

Talking of Williams, Allianz seem to have been given a ticking off because they've removed the pictures of the "new" livery.

But Fisi needed 8 seasons to win... a lucky race. Vettel only needed a little over a year to win... by dominating in a Toro Rosso!

While some of it was indeed due to nerves, most of it were not of his doing. Spain is a good example of that.

Spain was harsh, especially for Heikki!

  • Journeyer27/02/2009 at 15:40

Yup. Could be the next Schumi... not quite there yet, though.

    Looking at his 2008 start:

AUS: Taken out by Webber on lap 1

MAL: Fire/exhaust breakage on lap 40

BAH: Taken out by Super Aguri car on lap 1

ESP: Taken out by Sutil on lap 1

  • Paul27/02/2009 at 15:45

I think he'd end up at BMW rather than either Ferrari and McLaren, he's had experience at the team, knows the blokes involved and that, and got a point for them.

Hmmm… I want him to be at Ferrari. Who to replace between Kimi and Massa, though? Hmmm…

Massa without doubt, Kimi was bad last year and doesn't deserve the seat at the mo but overall he's a different class when on it. Push Massa and that annoying Ferrari mechanic with the beard out :-)

  • RG27/02/2009 at 16:11

I don't want Nicky to go either, or Robert either, more likely when Robert leaves for one of the big two, which I don't want happening.

Another Nick fan!! Whoo hoo you just automatically got on my xmas card list....thought I was the only one :-(

I'd like them both to stay firmly at BMW, i'm desperate for Nick to get his maiden win this year. I suspect the honour of being the 102nd GP winner (that right?!) is betwen him and Timo Glock.

  • Joe in Florida27/02/2009 at 16:28

I'm a bit late listening to the group forum, but would like to add a few comments.

There was a discussion about testing the new USF1 car on ovals. There are hundreds of road coures in the U.S. Nearly every oval can be configured for a road course, not to mention tracks like Road America, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen and Mid Ohio. Homestead/Miami runs a sportscar race the same weekend of the NASCAR race. So there are an endless supply of tracks that USF1 can spend 2009 testing.

Secondly, it was a waste of money flying all the F1 stuff over to North America for one race (Canadian GP 2008). IF there is a USGP, it will be much more practical to have two races, thus returning the GPC to the schedule. That is unless of course, the USGP falls later in schedule, after Monza, it'll be likely very cold in Canada for the race.

As far as drivers go for USF1, I doubt you'll see Marco Andretti, because he's not even a very good Indycar driver, let alone F1. Danica Patrick will be in over her head. I think you'll see Jonathan Summerton get a seat and then probably an established F1 guy, not necessarily an American.

  • RCC (aka Rockingcopsecorner)27/02/2009 at 16:34

I thought that about Patrick and the IRL will not want it's main attraction to go elsewhere. She's already said she won't travel....lazy!

  • Journeyer27/02/2009 at 16:35

Not sure how well Kubica and Vettel will get along. Vettel will probably be leading the next generation at Ferrari.

ahh, okay. is he any good then?

  • RCC (aka Rockingcopsecorner)27/02/2009 at 16:51

What about Justin Wilson? Our friendly Brit in the US?

  • Joe in Florida27/02/2009 at 17:02

Hey I would welcome a Brit on USF1. Indycar right now is very precarious financially. I mean with Milka Duno going to a top team because she's bringing 10-15 million of Citgo money with her, it's a bit wacky, I would say. Justin Wilson, Ant Davidson, Jensen Button, I'd take any one of them.

Jonathan Summerton is in the F1 preparation 'pipeline'. He's won in A1GP and I think his results are respectable. If he gets a year of testing before 2010, I think he'll do a good job.

  • Joe in Florida27/02/2009 at 17:05

Jonathan Summerton is a Florida boy, also. Don't really think that's factor, but I like it.

I use Firefox and don't have that or any other problem with the doohickey

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 17:58

I will sleep in an igloo on a frozen lake.

    Why?

  • Bassano Clapper27/02/2009 at 17:59

Hopefully watching Slumdog and Benjamin Buttons

Slumdog is ace, Benji I have yet to see but Fincher hasn't made a bad film yet in my eyes

  • lou27/02/2009 at 18:01

Benjamin Button is a great film :)

  • Lukeh27/02/2009 at 18:07

If Nick Fry is indeed stepping away from Honda (pleasepleasepleaseplease) and joined USF1 it'd be fantastic next year. Fry, in the American team, vs Brawn, in the (essentially) British team!

  • Jon Waldock27/02/2009 at 18:07

aaah, lou, just the person i was looking for....

did you get a text read out on moyles this morning??

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:08

sorry, i’m still laughing that every “leaked” shot turned out to be wrong light blue is fine by me.

That looks a lot like an RBS blue.

  • lou27/02/2009 at 18:09

did you get a text read out on moyles this morning??

erm...no sadly not. why what did it say?

  • Jon Waldock27/02/2009 at 18:09

I use Firefox and don’t have that or any other problem with the doohickey

me too, i dont have any problems ever

  • Bassano Clapper27/02/2009 at 18:10

Doohickey has been exceptionally stable for me in the last couple of weeks.

    Gavin, FF2 or 3?

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:10

I’ve just checked the williams site for sponsors and noticed the back of the rear wing is going to have ‘Race To Learn .org’ on it. Is this something i’ve totally missed or is it something new? (sorry if this has already been discussed at some point or if there is a pic of it on drop.io - school has blocked drop.io)

Williams had race to learn on the launch car.

  • Christine27/02/2009 at 18:11

Is the past tense of shakedown really shookdown? I like it :)

Force India shookdown new chassis at nearby Silverstone

(Nothing interesting in that link, by the way, 'cept for the shookdown bit)

  • Jon Waldock27/02/2009 at 18:11

erm…no sadly not. why what did it say?

it was a lou from kent, who said she was proud of moyles or somethings because he's climbing killi (which by the way my brother got to the top of today :D ) and she does D of E etc etc. cant remember exactly, that was the gist of it

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:15

    *googles jonathan summerton*

Quite a few people on Clive's blog have tipped him . Must confess I don't know much about him.

haha that's awesome. i must have been at school by then. nah sorry that wasn't me. sounds very like me though, although i've already finished my DofE :) your brother climbed Killi? wow that's amazing. :)

maybe i'll text in one day and see if i can get f1 or spc mentioned :P

maybe i’ll text in one day and see if i can get f1 or spc mentioned :P

We were hatching a plan the other day after the lecture to plug SPC on one of the BBC's phone-in shows during an F1 weekend. I suppose we should make a challenge with the 1st to succeed getting some form of prize/recognition

National coverage is a must, Australia weekend is surely a bonus!

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:20

Phew, it’s not just me then

Leo Laporte mentioned the other day when I was listening that someone has already written a hack to move the tabs

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:20

Battle of the Brains on BBC2 just asked a question about THAT woman.

  • lou27/02/2009 at 18:22

National coverage is a must, Australia weekend is surely a bonus!

it will be easier surely then cause it's early in the morning :) sounds like a plan. if enough of us text in i'm sure they will mention it :D

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:22

Is the past tense of shakedown really shookdown? I like it

That is the correct F1 usage.

  • Bassano Clapper27/02/2009 at 18:23

She's getting far too much coverage

Leo Laporte mentioned the other day when I was listening that someone has already written a hack to move the tabs

Or just use Firefox, which I do prefer over Safari

I can see a little ‘Alonso’ syndrome creeping into Kubica last year….kinda put me off him a little

I don't think it was too bad, you could tell he was frustrated, but he was in for the championship with two races to go so shoulda had more backing I think

Mind your language please, too many impressionable youngsters on the interwebz ya know

Hey, I'm on vista and so far it hasn't blown up. Yet anyway.

  • Lukeh27/02/2009 at 18:25

Has anyone seen the new 'backwards' Indianapolis?

    http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/03/17/the-backwards-indianapolis-configuration-revealed/

They've taken out the best parts of the track, the left hander after the straight halfway through a lap that was following by the hairpin! I've no idea why they've changed it to that, it looks completely poiintless to me. Joe just showed us that now and I'm just still wondering what the point was...

Doesn't say if a certain Mr Tilke was involved though ;)

  • Joe27/02/2009 at 18:26

I was just about to mention it, Luke.

Sad times. Yet another great track (imo anyway) ruined.

  • Bassano Clapper27/02/2009 at 18:26

Hey, I’m on vista and so far it hasn’t blown up. Yet anyway.

But didn't it nearly end up out the window recently or was that just you trying to convince the same of Lou?

  • RG27/02/2009 at 18:27

Thats for Moto GP isn't it? So, different standards there I think

No, that was when I had XP and to convince lou

No, that was when I had XP and to convince lou

...man we should really read the dates on these things.

    http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2008/09/10/2010-united-states-grand-prix-rumoured/

It says there it's likely that F1 would use the same configuration. From the wording of that, it seems as though it's not something they can just change on a whim either.

  • Joe27/02/2009 at 18:29

I hope when F1 goes back to USA they go to a real circuit and not the Indy mickey mouse track.

  • Bassano Clapper27/02/2009 at 18:30

I still say F1 should race at Road America. Such a lovely circuit with the way it flows and rises and falls. Beautiful place to race.

  • me27/02/2009 at 18:32

If I ever get my broken laptop up and running again I’m going to try the Ubuntu OS

it's not bad, but i've sadly concluded linux will never be ready for general consumption.

ubuntu is the best out there and it's still useless in comparison to leopard.

I still say F1 should race at Road America. Such a lovely circuit with the way it flows and rises and falls. Beautiful place to race.

Or my Miami street track (tumbleweed)

Seriously, Road America or Watkins Glen, bring in the real men, tracks, what the call those things nowadays.

Agreed, I love Road America from both watching races on television there and from playing the track on various games. Just a good track.

I read somewhere that the Glen is far to run down these days to make it remotely worthwhile bringing it up to F1 standards. Shame it is a classic F1 track.

Indianapolis has been modified since it held it's final United States Grand Prix last year.

  • Lukeh27/02/2009 at 18:39

Oh yeah, whilst your here Scott, have you got Race pro to work with online races yet? I swear the system is broke...

Everytime you go into a 'lobby' (or drive around the chosen track until you get enough people or when the game starts) then the online game just quits for me. You getting that?

  • Steven Roy27/02/2009 at 18:40

Everytime you go into a ‘lobby’ (or drive around the chosen track until you get enough people or when the game starts) then the online game just quits for me. You getting that?

Yes I have managed to get some online races in, and I need to say - I've changed my opinions of the game. Now that it's opened up a bit more and I've driven a few more cars and circuits, I'm really starting to enjoy it now. I had a really good experience of the Formula BMW at Zandvoort in a player lobby with a couple of friends. I managed to get my times down and play with a few things on the setup to make it handle a bit better. My best time got to a 1'43.8 and there was another guy on the same time, so I just went for it on a flyer, got everything right and pulled out a 1'42.7 from nowhere! I was just amazed.

Still, I love the DBR9, R8 GT, F3000 and FBMW and I like Zandvoort and Pau. I don't mind Macau but in the top GT cars I can't help bouncing off the barriers every time I try to go even remotely quickly.

  • Joe in Florida27/02/2009 at 18:47

I did see the backward Indy. I think it's just the MotoGP track, though if it was used in 2005 there would have been no controversy.

There is a casino in Las Vegas, don't know which one, that when it was built has the capabilities of hosting a GP. I think that means paddock club and garage area other than pavement for the cars

  • me27/02/2009 at 18:47

hmmm, an the mere mention of an as-yet-to-be-determined-when podpanel, had no bearing on it?

Ah dear... it looked pretty bad from what I saw of it but I wasn't born then so I never got to see it in action.

As trashy as you can imagine. The car park at Caeser's Palace with Roman centurions all over the place.

Possibly the best example of Stuart's point yesterday that things were not always better in the past.

  • Lukeh27/02/2009 at 19:03

Still, I love the DBR9, R8 GT, F3000 and FBMW and I like Zandvoort and Pau. I don’t mind Macau but in the top GT cars I can’t help bouncing off the barriers every time I try to go even remotely quickly.

To be fair a lot of the reviews have slated the single player in favour of praising how good the online is, I've read in a lot of places that the single player is more preperation for online championships and races, so it seems that may be the point

I'm enjoying the game but like I said the other night, I see what you mean about the repetition at times and a few other little niggles. It bothers me how you can clip a car then seen to suddenly go half a meter away from the car in a flash for some reason in a clipping glitch. Still want to try online though, not sure why I've had those problems I've mentioned :(

  • Dom27/02/2009 at 19:03

  • Christine27/02/2009 at 19:04

Okay, well, we might be able to squeeze in a couple of plugs for it. But this one better happen, or I end up looking like an idiot.

  • RG27/02/2009 at 19:04

I also note that Alianora did well in a test session in RLB, Scott also doing well. Good luck guys.

Again, I'm not being nosy or anything, just the collective term of lurking I beleive.

I've found one rather annoying little niggle - you can't get any kind of slipstream off the computer cars, yet they can off your car. For me that's a massive WTF?!

  • Scott Woodwiss27/02/2009 at 19:06

ok. so can everyone sign up again today, and then maybe start… it… soon?

The reason why I didn't start it was a) My fault because I plain forgot about it, too busy with other things and b) I didn't think it was fair for those people with only one car in a team to have to go it alone against two car teams.

  • Lukeh27/02/2009 at 19:06

Really? That's a bit wierd... It felt like I was getting plenty of slipstream in my races, especially the WTCC ones, but I'll take a look at that again tonight or tomorrow. If that's the case then that's a bit silly though.

    Mutiny at Honda. Shock horror.

any guesses as to why ferrari might want to split with morris, rather than the other way around?

Classic point is at Macau. I can be following a car in front going at full pelt and nothing happens, so slipstream effect whatsoever. But if a car comes up behind me, they get a tow and sail past, or something to that effect.

  • me27/02/2009 at 19:07

i say get the thing going asap (preferably tonight).

It’s 1986, but I just need to check whether the original one is still up, since I might have confused what everyone was saying about it.

Let's stick to the new one to avoid confusion

Logically the only reason they would give up the Marlboro cash is if someone else wants to give the more and doesn't want the tobacco association. Coca Cola would be a good example. There's a nice little rumour to spread.

One of the reasons that Bernie wanted F1 on the BBC was because "they can do it better". IIRC he's not an internet fan, but a lot of people were looking to foward to the online coverage. It's nice that races will be on iPlayer, but for those outisde of the UK, it doesn't matter because it's a UK-only service. Not the fault of anyone but the BBC, it's bloody annoying.

  • Dan Brunell27/02/2009 at 20:09

I like the testing livery better. Much better.

    Brawn and Steel Racing

    (Muted Trumpet: Whhaaawhaawhaawhaaaaaaaaaaaa.)

  • Scott Woodwiss27/02/2009 at 20:44

Actually, that's the fault of everyone BUT the BBC. I'm sure they'd love to broadcast it. But then they'd be competing with whatever your local broadcaster is and they wouldn't like that. Blame them for not having an online service, not the BBC who are not allowed to broadcast it worldwide.

    F1 Racing has a pretty in-depth 2009 season preview this month - and, and… a FREE LEWIS HAMILTON POSTER/WALLCHART! {Comment #55}

To be fair (or as a bonus, depending on your view of Lewis), there is a poster on the reverse of the Lewis one with all the circuits on, including some vital statistics and some brief descriptions of each. F1 Racing are trying to cater to more than one audience ;)

I'm seriously considering putting it on my wall, with the circuit side showing. I might just remember how many laps are in Sepang that way...

That was the easiest test session I've ever done. All I did was put in an RP indicating I'd seen the test (which got a somewhat sarcastic reply and probably deserved it) and an RP in my RLB "blog" about how I'd got from the FIA Gala to the test...

For those who missed the earlier post a new 1986 BATracer game has been started as a replacement for the one which fizzled out before it started.

    Right:

    http://batracer.com/-cj?&D&37543

Password is bourdais, those who have already joined are asked to take the same teams they did before.

We start a week from now. If it’s not too much trouble can this be plugged in the daily post description every day until we start. If not then I’ll try and post the details as one of the first comments when the new daily post goes up.

  • Andy Taylor27/02/2009 at 22:54

When was Lewis sent to prison and what did he do to get there?

    It’s an old message and never really sinks in till it’s too late but a solid back-up is essential these days {Comment #146}

Unlike my back-up system. I had all my data on two hard drives and the most critical files backed up on my PDA as well and still came within a millimetre of losing everything this week.

The story began at the start of last week when my secondary hard drive failed. I didn't panic because it was purely a backup drive - after the drive was disconnected, everything except the re-writer worked fine (because the re-writer no longer had anything to connect to).

However, it took a little longer than expected to get hold of a replacement and yesterday it looked like my PDA might have been on its way out. Turned out that the SIM had got a bit of static on it and it was blocking parts of the system from working. The till staff was surprised that the five-year-old SIM was working until four hours before he saw it and almost as surprised to find there was no permanent damage to either the SIM or the PDA. But it was a close call.

Suddenly, I had an urge to get everything backed up ASAP. This morning, Dad located a suitable replacement drive, fitted it... ...and suddenly none of my drives worked. Several hours of fiddling around later, it looks like the primary drive will need to be wiped and re-installed. Luckily, there was a tiny (3GB) spare drive hanging around (two other spare drives were tried but the system didn't like them). An operating system and some networking protocols were installed and I am currently copying everything to another computer in the network because it's my final hope of keeping the data I've got (apart from the few hundred megabytes of critical stuff on the PDA).

Some of the data is from 1997, which shows how well the backup systems have worked in the past. Still, getting the backup systems working this time has been fraught...

I just took my lunch to do a cost comparision of wages, taxes, and material costs comparing North Carolina with the UK, Germany, and Italy. I will not share too much but the one thing that did suprise me.

UK > or = Germany = North Carolina > Italy in cost of an average employee for an employer overall.

just experimenting, but a while back we used to have sidepodcast comments pinging identi.ca every time a new one was posted. it was a bit of a flaky installation and eventually we switched it off.

trying it again now, and it needs a bit more work, but you can now subscribe at to either of the following (both contain the same):

    http://identi.ca/sidepodcasttalk

    https://twitter.com/sidepodcasttalk

the comments are anonymous and are limited to 120 characters. additionally you can't yet reply on either and expect the comment to appear on sidepodcast.com (although that's in the pipeline too).

With reference to the BATRacer game:

I hope BATRacer is actually working properly on my computer by then. I haven't been able to play it properly for the past 24 hours (or at least those of them that I've had a working computer) because when I've clicked anything in the "Garage" or "Season" tabs, nothing has happened. This is significant because I can't test or strategise at all.

This is the third time BATRacer has broken in the middle of a public season. The previous two times, the only fix was to wait a couple of months until BATRacer decided to spontaneously behave again.

  • Alianora La Canta28/02/2009 at 00:04

    Not the fault of anyone but the BBC {Comment #325}

The BBC gets enough stick for the bandwidth iPlayer uses in the UK and it has to allow that because of the £150m it received from the government to make and maintain the service. I don't think UK ISPs would allow government ministers to allow BBC to make iPlayer worldwide (even on a subscription basis) because BT wouldn't be able to upgrade the network to carry the extra load fast enough for their liking.

For that matter, if iPlayer was open to non-UK people, Bernie probably wouldn't have allowed the BBC to put anything online. Otherwise he'd lose precious (to him) revenue from the other broadcasters.

As is often the cas with these things, the blame is complex. It's still not a good situation though - a service allowing anyone to pay a representative figure to access BBC online content wherever they lived would be a great thing, and barriers to it chafe.

  • Alianora La Canta28/02/2009 at 00:09

i’m just sorting through all my magazines that i seem to have collected over the past few years. i don’t really want to throw them away, but where to put them?…

I've got a similar problem. I've been told off because apparently the shelf containing my F1 Racings and Autosports now has a "dangerous" amount of weight on them. The trouble being that I refer to them quite frequently and my room has nearly every horizontal surface covered in paper-based products already (as well as some that aren't). Most of which is still useful to me in some way.

  • Alianora La Canta28/02/2009 at 00:12

Boy: How much does a Panda weigh?

    Girl: I don't know

Boy: Enough to break the ice - hi i'm xxxxxxxx

No problem. You may have some success because I haven't heard of any offers being made so far. Still given that there are still about a dozes shuttle flights scheduled and each one seems to have two months of delays once it reaches the pad it make take a while before they deliver.

    Walked into that one...

    Let's see...

    The worse one I've heard:

"Hi, You may not know my name now, but you will be screaming it later."

My friend got punched by the lady's boyfriend sitting next to her. I spent the night in the emergency room with him.

    The one I've used.

"Hi, I'm Dan. I've had all my shots and don't have any kids... that I know of."

I my defense I was drunk, it was my birthday, and my friends practically carried me to the girl. Needless to say, she laughed and walked away.

I've offically given up going to bars to meet people.

On the pick up lines I really like this one (which may have been from Adam or Joe [from Adam and Joe]):

Boy: Can I ask you a personal question?

    Girl: Go on.

    Boy: What's your name?

It's rather sweeter than most of them. But I am almost certain that no pick-up line in history has ever worked.

Walk up to girl with a cloth in your hand and say...

"Does this smell like chloroform to you?"

  • Flibster28/02/2009 at 09:01

"You've been a very bad girl. Go to my room!"

"If I flip a coin, what are my chances of getting head?"

"Hi. I suffer from amnesia. Do I come here often?"

"Have you always been this cute, or did you have to work at it?"

"Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?"

"Be unique. Be different. Say yes."

(give the person a bottle of tequila) "Drink this, then call me when you're ready."

    My personal favourite...

    "Greetings and salivations"

I think it's obvious why I no longer drink alcohol. :D

Speaking of Sutil, that haircut makes him look like an absolute clot.

    Yup.

Now I've converted the images to greyscale to protect my eyesight. There is a couple of interesting touches.

The rear view mirrors are mounted interestingly - going to make it a pig to get in and out of the car - but they could be a useful little flow conditioner or even produce a small amount of downforce.

Also, the sidepod winglets come are nicely shaped too. But the main one I have spotted is the rear of the car... Its very nicely packaged, kinda a bit like a the Renault rear end with the rollover, but the exhausts are essentially shrinkwrapped by the looks of it.

Also, how flat is the top surface of the nose....

It is green and orange (and white), so I guess you're happy :)

    I like this livery too.
