Going out with a bang
Date - the eve of Wednesday 27th July 2011.
Sector - Final Third.
Destination - Sidepodcast.com.
Mission - to write A Daily that will Go Out With A Bang.
So what goes into a bang?
Well if its fireworks you are after, Wikipedia goes into the subject quite deeply.
And then there are sweets :-) Anyone else remember space dust? You can still buy it and it comes in chocolate as well. Or you can bake it into a cake - Heston's recipe here. It works, I'm told its good :-)
If your interests tend more towards actual space than sweet space, you could take a look at the May/Lintott/Moore co project Bang! The Complete History of the Universe.
Or hasten to the lovely BBC inlayer and watch 'Bang!' The website is complete with things to do at home. As home educators we like this a lot, but it could be just the thing for the long summer holiday if you are of a school going persuasion :-)
Let us not forget panda's in all this - This is one known as 'Bang'
So many Bang!s, but so little time. My day is beckoning me - a trip on the train to see Little Howard, a purveyor of Bangs (mainly to the head of Big Howard) - and so I will be gone from the comments for the day. I've had fun writing for you all, and there may be one or two more things in the future… If Mrs Christine allows (whibble)...
So In the words of Phineas and Ferb 'What are we going to do today?'
This may be the best picture you see today...
:D

What goes into a BANG? Not sure, but what goes into THE BANGS are Susanna Hoffs and Vicki and Debbi Peterson....
Not sure if Annette Zilinskas joined them before or after tehy became THE BANGLES....
Now don't go "Walk(ing) like An Egyptian" on me....
Oooooohh... now there's a trivia question

Morning Amy, morning everyone.
Currently watching the 1998 British GP, and I just wanted to share the Silly Season rumors they were sharing at the time:
Frentzen to Jordan (correct)
Irvine to Jordan (even Murray dismissed that one right away)
Villeneuve to BAR (correct)
Damon Hill to BAR (I was SHOCKED when I heard that - never heard it before)
Zanardi to Williams (correct)
Montoya to Williams (2 years too early)
Herbert to Williams (wrong, but would've been a great send-off)

I'm in the lounge at the cinema waiting for pamela, all around me middle aged people are discussing Sunday's race. So odd to hear f1 chat in public
Especially with Webber not winning.
But it's good that F1 is taking a more general level of interest there.
Or are you at the Senna premiere? :D
bingo. Pamela said she'd text when she left work and i haven't heard from her so I'm getting nervous!
Morning all
yay shes already parked and will be here in a minute
Technically true. Montoya signed for Williams near the end of '98, but had a partnership with Chip Ganassi to "house" Montoya for a while. The appearance of Jenson Button merely complicated matters.
AH! Didn't know that. Interesting stuff. So basically, Williams provided Ganassi with Zanardi's replacement?
free beer!
Yep - it was a long term thing between Ganassi and Williams that ended with Junqueira. It was rumoured that Frank wanted to farm Button out to Ganassi until Ralf's contract was up, but that's never been confirmed beyond whispers.
Could be nonsense, but the business practices of the pair and rumours from the time give the impression that there may have been something behind it.
Interesting. But I guess Jenson wanted to stay in F1, which is why he looked elsewhere. F1 contract negotiations are always fun to follow.
Exactly what happened in the end.
Indeed. Although if that were true, I'm surprised Jenson didn't take it up. I was watching the F1 season review DVDs for Germany, and they mentioned that Williams renewed Ralf's contract as it was only up to the end of 2001. If Jenson only needed to wait a season, he would've been right in a top seat instead of going through all the pain he did before becoming World Champion.
One also needs to look at the potential black hole that was CART / IRL at the start of the 2000's. Had things not gone to plan, Button's top level career could have been over very early.
Read the first comment on this news story :)
http://www.arabianbusiness.com/us-pancake-chain-ihop-heads-the-middle-east-406176.html
True, but Montoya bolstered his reputation with it in 1999 & 2000. Jenson was due to go there (if ever) in 2001. And his career almost died at Benetton in 2001 too - so it's not like it could've been all that bad Stateside.
Yes! :D
True, but the differences between CART in 1999 and 2001/2002 is huge. In those 3 years, all the big names (teams and drivers) all started to leave and in another case... died.
F1s getting boring, no decent politics for ages
..hopefully something big will happen soon
Valid point.
{ring... ring... ring...}
"Hey Max, it's Bernie. Do us a favour and send some pricey quotes to some idiot journalist at a paper.
We need a bit of behind-the-scenes rollicking.
Cheers."
The German prosecutors are keeping Bernie busy. :D
Concorde Agreement is up for renewal next year, isn't it? ;)
Yep, which means FOTA ought to wake up soon.
Heehee! :D
Maybe something will blow up in the summer break, otherwise its going to be a very slow 4 weeks
Or break up...
Maybe Piquet will ask for his drive back! :D
Possible, but I'm guessing we'll see a FIA-FOTA alliance against FOM (as mentioned by Joe). Which would be bizarre given they were on opposite sides last time.
Not until the next Concorde I think
Different FIA president last time though
True, but Todt was Max's anointed successor (back then, anyway, before it was revealed he had a mind of his own).
Which is why this situation is quite different
Morning all.
Hmmm. Difficult to be sure who is doing what in the shifting network of allegiances behind the scenes. There is the ongoing friction between the FIA and FOM – the former wanting to have a bigger say in the commercial side, the latter wanting the former to keep their paws off. FOTA obviously has its own interests at heart (bigger share of comemrcial revenues – surprise, surprise!) which of course pitches it to some extent against both the FIA and FOM.
You only have to look at the intra-team rancour that erupted over the blown diffusers to see how easy it is for the FIA to fracture FOTA’s unity.
Very true.
How are you today Stuart?
I am wisely using office time to try and figure a decent route to cycle to work across London. Turns out every route is a serious death trap - it appears to be a case of finding the least deadly...
Knackered! Seemed to be battling a headwind throughout last night's time trial, which on an out-and-back course ought to be impossible. No official timing yet (had to dash off before everyone finished, otherwise would be late for dinner), but I expect to have taken 10-20 seconds out of last week's time.
Avoid Peckham. Someone jumped out and tried to kick me in the you-know-wheres (presumably in order to nick the bike) once.
Was it you that was looking for a new teammate a few days ago and did you find one?
I'm well clear of Peckham thankfully. Mine's just a fairly straight run from the End End to the West's business-y sector, but the map tells me it's anything other than straight.
However, if it saves me £130 per month in Tube travel costs, then I'll be happy enough.
Alternatively, if the FIA and FOM are also fractured, FOTA can also leverage that to get more commercial revenue. If done properly, they can effectively sell themselves to the highest bidder.
Looking to recruit the same local 'ringer' who joined us last year when one of the team was ill. Quite useful to have knowledge of the course because there are so many tree roots.
Aaaahh I see
Some chap on rFactor Central has created a version of the Targo Floria course - all 72km's. No idea how or if it is even close to accurate, but I just wish i had a computer strong enough to run it.
:/
Heh. I couldn't - shades steamed up. Spent at least half of each lap on the verge of a biggish accident.
Would certainly be interesting to be a fly on the wall in these negotiations!
Reminds me of kart race I was in a few years back. After a huge rain shower, the apex's of each corner were flooded with muddy water, but they diving through the puddles was one of the few ways to actually overtake.
After two laps, my visor was brown with filth, so they only way to see where I was going was to leave the visor up. On the penultimate lap, I dived down the inside of another driver and my eyes got washed out with dirty water.
Ughhh... still finished 2nd though.
:)
MEGA. :)
Apparently, the best lap anyone has managed yet is around 29 minutes
Oh! http://twitter.com/#!/OfficialMGP/status/96174860031623168
Points for Merc !!
was expecting the puma mag to launch today, but no sign of it yet: http://thepodiummagazine.com/
Its made on...Fashion street?

My verdict of Senna is I liked it but I'm quite surprised non f1 fans like it too. I've recommended it to Kait who may get bored by the race footage and f1 terminology whatnots, but I'm secretly trying to turn her into an f1 fan so she must see it just in case she sees something about it that interests her.
secretly trying to turn her? :D you're like a creature of the night or someother.
oh wait - you ARE a creature of the night, given how late you stay up. :P
glad to hear you like Senna - it's the emotional aspect that hooks non-F1 fans.
she likes sooo many other sports, there's no reason she can't like f1!
I also liked the seat next to us for remaining empty. I can confirm I did eat the popcorn allocated to it.
does she like any other form of motorsport? she may be one for natural human ability. ;)
tumbler or it didn't happen. :D
I do not approve of this usage.
I don't like any other form of motorsport, that doesn't mean she can't like F1 :D
no, not tumblr, tumbler! as in popcorn tumbler! :D
very good point. but what would hook her to F1? maybe Finns? :D
what on earth is a popcorn tumbler!
I think the personalities. She's hooked on poker because she loves the personalities.
massa deserves #rankings points for this collection of classic gp's - http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2011/07/felipe_massa_-_classic_f1.html
he only drove in two of them.
There's tons of that in F1. And some poker too. :) How far along is she?
renault sport f1 podcast with crofty: http://www.renaultsportf1.com/Nouvelle-traduction-Podcast-from.html
(presumably another usp production)
Indeed. The other 3 are Senna drives.
That said, I don't agree with Benson when he says, "This race is often held up as evidence that Massa was occasionally fast enough to get on terms with Schumacher, who was in the final year of his first F1 career." He goes on to disagree with that hypothesis, but then I never saw it that way from the start. I always saw it as a bit of a lucky win, unlike Interlagos at the end of that year.
Referring to Turkey 2006, of course.
i can't disagree. i can't even remember the race :)
will watch it in a bit.
Was David Brabham the last bald driver in F1?
Depends how you define bald, lewis doesnt really have any hair, i think is beard is longer than his barnet!
rubens?
I'd still class Lewis bonnet as receding tbh
Oh yes - he cheated that a bit, didn't he?
its coming! http://googlx.com/rickey-blog/images/2008/06/lewis-hamilton-02-2008-06-08.jpg
My thoughts exactly.
and maybe kubica?
Lewis used to have some funky hair.
http://www.grandprix.com/jpeg/phc/pfra06/fri/lewishamilton1-lg.jpg
yep
http://willthef1journo.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/dgp206eur168.jpg?w=200&h=300
Again, technically receding as opposed to bald
What's the difference?
One still has a modicum of hair, the other doesn't
in theory, this should be amazing, but i'm struggling to get it to load:

1am was a fun time to get my tax return done, but now I'm happy because I'm getting some money back. Now to sleeps! Night Sidepodland :)
whats it do?? *tries it out* .. *waits for it to load*
http://www.grandprix.com/columns/maurice-hamilton/its-the-pits.html
is maurice a tad useless or did he just not "enjoy" his time as Ted's replacement ??
he's no ted.
I didn't even know he was being Ted!
Aye - in either FP2 or FP3, he played the "Ted" role
eh? only in the race.
Possible - my days have been horribly mixed up lately. I don't remember him during the race tbh
lynch just linked to a blog post about him.. and then christine said... and...
ahh, never mind.
Sounds like he was reporting to the commentary box not to the viewers
I'm still reading the post
I actually might be right - MH did a session reporting to CRofty and Ant as well
heheheh. GPD is thinking of Olympic sports for F1 people and someone sent this
RT @jj8271: @GrandPrixDiary I would have said basketball for Sebastian Vettel but he's not that good at passing. #F1Olympics
I think Nick Heidfeld qualified for the long jump on Sunday
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.
