The big news of the moment is Red Bull's return to two-team ownership, as Mateschitz buys out Berger's half of Toro Rosso. This raises many, many questions, and is what we've been talking about in the comments. Well, that and a game of Space I Spy, obviously.
- At the time of writing, the game stands with Lou and she has offered us a 'w'. Make your best guesses in the comments.
- Why the sudden turn around from Dietrich? Five minutes ago he wanted to wash his hands completely of Toro Rosso and now he has taken full control. Where does this leave Berger? And what does it mean for the driver situation?
- The discussion still keeps coming round to Coulthard's baby name: Dayton Minier Coulthard. Can't have too many DC's in the world, I guess.
- And in non-Red Bull news, Rosberg has said he will rethink his position at Williams depending on how they do this season. There's us thinking he's a one-team man. Who do you think he could go to? Where would he fit best?
Don't hold back if you've got something to say that isn't on the above list. It's all very flexible round here and we love to hear from you, no matter what. Also, don't forget to check out the very recently released fifth episode of Sidepodpanel. I will see you in the comments.
The Goodwood Revival just started on ITV1. I don't know if it is just on in Scotland.
am just watching last weeks top gear. mika driving lessons, and following the comments.
:)
white ipod?
so, the great "top gear downloaded via itunes" experiment came to an abrupt halt this evening when the file i acquired (the one i'd paid for by means of a season pass, ontop of my licence fee which already paid to make the program), contained a rather scatty audio track, followed by silence.
that means not only do i watch the show a week later than everyone else, i now have to learn to lip read too.
on plus side, because i resorted to watching it on iPlayer, i opted to watch this week's show too, so at least i'm up to date.
Hello to everyone, I'd like to see Berger working in Red Bull next year, in my opinion he is the man behind the technical development and knows very well how to take the best of a pilot.
In the other hand, switch motors with Toro Rosso is very risky, Renault will have chance to improve their engine this winter like Ferrari, but as we know Ferrari had engine problems this year (BBK), while Renault with DC used the same engine in 3 races, ok someone would say he didn´t finished all those races but at least it didn´t exploded.
Sorry for my English I still learning=)
Bye!
I am going to try wing(s)....
hi camilo.
i can't believe that he'll be happy to turn his back on f1 after the year he's just had. he must have a master plan hidden somewhere?
they did, although didn't webber have a failure in china? i think renault must have learnt a lot from their engine troubles this year. here's hoping anyhow.
just like the rest of us then :)
seeing as i've already tried apple. has anyone suggested windows?
Good Morning all,
On the RedBull/Toro Rosso thing - is Dieter buying back his stake to make it easier to sell, or is he doing it to take the best bits from both teams and make a 'Super RedBull'?
I can't help wondering if the fact that Toro Rosso beat them AND they had better engines than RedBull have something to do with this...
Not quite the windows i was thinking of, but i'll give it to you :) your turn :D
It probably did. If so, then we can hail Sebastian Vettel and Gerhard Berger as the saviors of Minardi. :P
Journeyer, that was Five Pints of Awesome!!!
Hahaha! Why, thank you, Gavin! :) Five Pints of Awesome indeed. :D
Interesting thing I've just found. Been playing Need For Speed Most Wanted for the past couple of days and I've noticed something. When you install nitrous on a car, if you use it all up, it regenerates as you drive fast. So in essence, it's not a nitrous system - it's KERS! :D
Buemi and British F3 driver Brendon Hartley will be covering Webber at testing in Jerez between Dec 15-17. Buemi will spend all three days in the car, whilst Hartley will be in it for the first day before Vettel takes over for the remaining two.
And DC? Well he's too busy apparently.
His fiancee's just had a baby. Can ya blame him? ;)
i would've thought he'd be looking for a chance to escape already.
When you're a new dad, the first thing you'd want is to spend time with your new offspring, or at least that's what I think. Doesn't make you look a good father really when you spend 5 minutes with the kid and then go "OK, back to the F1 world again" does it? I say let him have his break with his family. :)
do they have penguins in space?
right then, i spy with my sidepodeye, something beginning with:
'F'
by the way, i think we need a wiki page to track this, because i have no idea if this has already been suggested or not?
dc to karen:
"i prefer f1 cars... they're quieter"
hehe XD
I can search through the comments and create a page when i get home is you like? (the school block sites like the wiki)
if you have time that would be great.
Bernie is determined to press ahead with medals :(
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7749751.stm
question then. if this only needs fia approval, what of fota?
this sounds like a crazy scheme they'd think up. is bernie pushing back against them? are we in for a 3-way fight for "who can dream up the daftest rules"?
i have today discovered the route of williams f1's financial problems... they have bugger all business sense!
today they kindly informed me that they're closing the official fan club for the winter and are therefore reimbursing me the cost of my year's membership.
on the plus side - free cog!
on the negative side - they're likely going to be broke soon.
This isn't funny anymore...
I'm confused when Bernie says "all the teams are happy with it". Why on earth would teams like Williams and Red Bull be happy with it?
and what aren't the teams coming out and publicly stating that they're happy with it?
Santander still moving to Ferrari.
but are they also sticking with mclaren?
Actually, this is quite a good sign. I'd imagine the only reason this is being ignored by everyone but Eddie is nobody is taking it seriously.
Firefox? :P
not firefox :)
Blimey. We're trying to help, Frank!
tell me about it.
Eh? Would Ferrari ever allow that?
dunno, stuart mentioned it a while back. not heard anything since.
As far as I can remember its happened before. Am I right in thnking Marlboro used to sponsor both McLaren and Ferrari (aswell as Alfa Romeo) in the 80's and 90's?
Ignoring it when Bernie is this determined is a big mistake. This might slip right under their nose.
Yup, that was what I thought. But wait, the article said they'd switch for 2010, but they're staying with McLaren for 2009. So I don't think they're sponsoring more than one team at a time. :)
Whatever DID happen to Stuart? Haven't seen him in a while.
maybe he's rubbish at i-spy?
Hahahaha! :P
Evenin all.
...
:(
Speaking of which...
Is it Fire?
nope.
Make me wonder what Bernie really wants... what will we get as the 'compromise solution'?
I can understand the slick tyres and the aerodynamic changes (even if they need some work) - but with the FIA and Bernie trying to change EVERYTHING to do with F1, makes me wonder - did I just sit through the most boring season of F1 ever or what?
apparently we did. apparently the racing's not nearly close enough and we should expect... more?
Apparently, Ferrari didn't win the WDC, even though Massa the most wins. ;)
which reminds me...
Is it a Ferrari? :P
That ^^ is Bernie saying that...
Can anyone tell me when the last time a driver won the World Championship without winning a race?
Because i don't think i've ever heard of it. And what happens when i win 7 races and then don't finish the rest of it? Thats pointless!!! AAAHHHH that man annoys me!!
Flight Control System?
I saw this earlier :( I just don't understand why...he can't just change one thing at a time.... and...and.. i like points.. it's just better that way. i can't believe the teams would be happy with it... maybe Bernie dreamt that they agreed and now thinks that everyone thinks it's a good idea. Either that or he has just completely lost it.
Here's the curious thing for me: why hasn't anyone in the paddock gone on the record for or against it? It's very odd of them not to be vocal about such things.
nooo.
yeah that's a good point... maybe they are all on holiday and think Bernie is bluffing?
one would assume they're acting as one under the umbrella of fota and don't wish to be drawn into public media arguments.
if true, then i'm liking this new fota business (although my opinion changes daily).
The only thing that remotely makes sence about the medals thing is that by handing out 3 sets of medals per race (as opposed to 8 sets of points per race) Bernie is chopping FIA's expenses while at the same time jacking up FIA's prices for hosting races so that he can use the services of the best devoice lawyers on the planet.
Looks like there will be no money left for Bernie, Slav and the kids or for that matter the entire F!A at the end of this one.
So if Christine fanices actually running the entire F1A (having Bernie's job) Now's her chance....
Fuel hose
not a fuel hose no.
Why should the teams complain? This medal business is just for the WDC, isn't it? So for the WCC the system stays the same. So it's more something the drivers should complain about.
I'll take bernie over!! I've got £5....about as much as F1 will be worth in a year....
true. but if it's making a mockery of the sport in which they contest...
:)
that's pricey isn't it? you can get five high street chains for that money.
Never been done. Twice we have had a driver win the championship with only one win. 1958 Mike Hawthorn had one win but there were not many races in the championship in them days. Then in 1982 Keke Rosberg only had one win but 11 different drivers won races that season so it was a bit unusual to say the least. Had it been a remotely normal season FerrFerrari would have strolled it but their number one driver Gilles Villeneuve was killed then his number 2 Didier Pironi smashed his legs to bits and never raced again.
Is it Fincke ?
i have no idea what you just said?
Mike Fincke is the commander of the ISS and someone at mission control insists on calling him Spanky on the radio. I thought Max had an off-season job the first time I heard it.
ahh, right :)
no, not him.
What do they care?
From my post on the medal system, just published.
I don't get why the teams are so silent on this either - perhaps Bernie is negotiating something with them all and this is what the teams have decided he should get in lieu of whatever it is they will get. Quite what though, I have no idea - just speculating, of course.
I think the last few years have proven that they can do whatever they want. The fans will still watch and I guess the medal system is easier for newbies. Instead of having to remember who gets how many points there will just be a medal table.
And Bernie has managed to get everybody talking about F1 at the quietest time of the year
Artichokes, space, pandas....
I just came on to say I'm doing a fair bit of traveling at the moment (aah it's a tough life) so not around much. more online in a week. i already have a weeks worth of shows to listen to on my train/planes :) Hope you're all doing well.
Off topic: comment about episode 84.
Christine and Me were discussing how Renault were changing several paramaters at the same time in their testing and made the comment that it was not "scientific." As a scientist, I must disagree. Changing one variable at a time is one way to test systems, but not the only way. In a F1 car, I bet DOE (design of experiments) is commonly used. DOE is a methodology by which several factors are changed simultaneously in order to better understand how the performance space (in several dimensions) is influenced by several orthogonal factors. When properly used, DOE provides far more information about a system than does changing one factor at a time.
Here's a good link if you would like to learn more: http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handbook/pri/section1/pri12.htm
Enjoy!
Barry
'me' I have just created a list in the Wiki, hope it's ok.
i thought i spy was steven roy's idea?
other than that, it's perfect :)
Thanks Barry :)
Perhaps I shouldn't have referenced science, but I still believe that changing the rear wing, the front wing, winglets, slicks, safety car rules, points systems, etc, etc... makes it hard to find out which one is making the difference, if any.
well you kinda gave the idea to steven.. so i took it as your idea... i'll change it..
:D
cheers. i know that man doesn't get nearly enough credit around these parts ;)
Very true
sidepodspace update
The crew of the ISS are using Canadarm2 to disconnect the Leonardo multi-purpose logistic module(shipping container) from the ISS and moving it into the shuttle payload bay. It delivered 14,000 pounds of equipment and materials to the ISS and is taking 3,500 pounds of rubbish and samples back to Earth.
they don't simply jettison the rubbish?
You can get fined for littering you know.
i didn't. i do know something up there that begins with 'f' though.
Giv iz a clue?
the space people may be able to see more than one of these f's.
i say "may" because i can't actually be sure how many are visible.
You can't just lob a ton and a half of rubbish out the window. One day everyone is worried about a collision with a toolbag now you just want to throw tons of rubbish out every year.
i'm not very good at this am i?
flying tools?
ehehe XD
i have just been informed christine made a quiz. this isn't a sidepodquiz. and possibly i'm in a lot of trouble for not being aware of it sooner.
however, if you find yourself with a minute or two to spare:
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art59362.asp
nope and not 'floating tools' either.
Given that:
- You get fined £80 for dropping a cigarette on the pavement in the UK (or similarly-sized item of litter)
- A cigarette weighs 1.5 grammes
- The UK covers 94600 sq mi, which is 0.187% of the Earth's surface (50409497.819 sq mi)
Then:
- Assuming that none of it was burned up by the atmosphere (which would seriously complicate matters, as it is unclear which country's littering law would apply and to what proportion)
- Also assuming the effects of gravity were considered when the weight of the rubbish was quoted,
- 30.45 tonnes would fall on the UK
- If the average "bit" is the weight of a cigarette end, then that would be 45675 separate littering offences
- This would lead to the UK police sending NASA a bill for £3.654m.
This doesn't count the bill from other countries which ban littering.
Probably cheaper to take it all home and recycle/landfill it the normal way, then...
understood :(
hehe i knew about that! :D i got 7/10 for the part one and 8/10 for the second part :) i remember cause i was pleased with my score.
9/10 (forgot about vettel's box)
5/10 (no idea what happened there)
You remember more about the beginning of the year than what happened a few months ago?
Weird.
Not that I can talk. I had to research the whole flipping thing.
i have just been informed christine made a quiz. this isn’t a sidepodquiz. and possibly i’m in a lot of trouble for not being aware of it sooner.
however, if you find yourself with a minute or two to spare:
http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art59362.asp {me - 3 comments ago}
I got 77.5%.
understood :( {me - 4 comments ago}
Well, it was a nice idea. Just not one that the average picky police officer would approve of.
i never remember final points / wins, so that lost me two. didn't know the local start time in singapore either.
One of the astronauts accidently let go of a tool bag weighing about 15kg
My quiz score has disappeared completely.
8 in both.
I'd like to make a complaint, you said Robert Kubica finished the Chinese Grand Prix in 12th, however, he finished 6th, he had qualified 12th, not finished the race in 12th.
I demand an extra point :(
Which question?
Sorry. Obviously the Chinese one.
i has found it again.
there are two quizzes though, was that for the first or the 2nd?
One of the astronauts accidently let go of a tool bag weighing about 15kg {Steven Roy - 2 comments ago}
On the calculation I've worked out, expect a £1566 fine from the UK government anytime soon.
Part 2, would be 7 if I'm right. Where did Kubica finish?
i has found it again.
there are two quizzes though, was that for the first or the 2nd? {me - 2 comments ago}
It's an average of both (and I think I may have calculated it incorrectly, since I got 80% on the first one and 70% on the second one).
Hmm. Weird, cos F1.com says he qualified 11th, so I'm not sure where I got 12 from.
Yay, quiz!
I got 90% in Part 1 and 100% in part 2. If it weren't for DC! ;)
By the way, I've found out Sidepodcast gets everywhere (as if I shouldn't have known already).
There I was, reading through Force Fans Online, which I've recently become admin of, when all of a sudden I see one of my fellow forumites ask, "Are you the same Alianora that gets mentioned occasionally on Sidepodcast?" It was quite amusing :D
Wikipedia says he qualified 12th and the BMW Sauber official site says 11th.
Oh, didn't someone get a 5/10 place grid drop?
Grid penalty for Webber.
you're an admin now? well done you :)
Thats the one Im thinking of.
But still, I'm gonna count that as 9 points.
So an average of 85% for me.
You mean I gave the wrong answer and got it right?
i wish i had your luck.
If you put 6th and got it wrong, then yes.
erm... it's a long shot, but feet?
clever... but wrong.
need more clues?
aye
please. :)
Please.
Man-made?
yes. and not that far removed from the sport we know and (mostly) love.
Ecclestone.
Kidding. I hope...
Please don't ask me where I got the E from
i really hope that's the last time you'll ever say that sentence out loud!
fuel tank?
France?
nope. but that is a clever connection.
Of course it won't.
Oh darn it ;)
not france. again clever though.
Force?
nope.
Forward accelaration.
nope.
man made... starts with 'f' and is kinda related to f1... that's tricky...
a fin?... not sure they would call any of their wings on the space station fins (i know nothing about that kinda thing) but anyway...
Am I on the right lines?
Dumbo-Flugel.
Well, there's an F in there.
clever, but not correct.
in space?
It's better than the first thing I thought of. I was gonna say Franck!
mmm, sorta. but this thing(s) only associated with f1, rather than specifically a part of it.
oh jeez!
this is tricky... your good at coming up with things.
hehe :)
do we have a list of the responses so far?
no... do you want me to make one?
just so i can check i haven't already missed it.
:) ok 2 secs
Shame it is not something beginning with e. This is nothing to do with racing or space or anything else but you just have to watch it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79tl2H3QzT0&feature=PlayList&p=20AF0A7EE84DB46F&index=1
ok a list of guesses so far
- firefox
- fire
- ferrari
- flight control system
- fuel hose
- Fincke
- fliying tools
- floating tools
- feet
- Ecclestone
- fuel tank
- France
- force
- forward accelaration
- fins
- Dumbo - flugel
- Franck
ok i think that's it....
i've become the list person now haven't i? :)
I have been moderated again. All I did was post a link for a video of an exploding whale. What's wrong with that?
I think you answered your own question there!
oh, you're so much more than that :)
good news, the 'f' the space people are looking at is not on that list.
It is funny & the whale was already dead
These moderations are getting stranger each time. :)
Bah, Mickey Mouse UK littering laws, let us have som real fun....
And what is the penalty for littering in Malaysia/Singapore again? (spitting out chewing gum? something like 200 lashes with a cane?) If Ali can worked out the weight of a wad of gum and do the same calulations again, well, we have may have just wiped out teh enitre corps of Astronauts to a very painful death, legally.....
i unmoderated it, but seriously, don't follow that link.
Finland?
nope.
lol :) oh yeah i'm also most talkative again :P
Ok, now that is weird.
food?
it's not edible.
lol ok... well it was worth a try.
Erm... wha?
Flap(s)?
no, but again, brilliant guesses.
is it something we should have guessed by now cause it's really easy?
yup and yup.
more clues?
oh... erm...
faces?
please :D
nope.
this is fun.
so. these f's are not necessarily related to space - you see them everyday. but without it / them, the mission would hold less significance.
friends....
no, but damn that would have been an awesome idea.
wow... i still have no idea.. hmmmm......
fibres?
nope.
fingers?.... am i even close?
fuel(s)?
fluke(s) ?
not really. it is man-made.
what's a fluke? not fuel either.
oh yeah... sorry... :(
Well, it is a fluke that you have us all stumped at the moment, me....
flight?
i can't believe it's this difficult.
not flight. it's a fair bet we'll not be able to use the letter 'f' again isn't it?
I am struggling now...
Factory?
no, i see where you're coming from though.
feats?
Flare? Fuse?
are you working your way through the dictionary now?
My Supper time, gotta go.
nope. more clues?
it's easy for you, you know the answer :P
i'm beginning to question if i've spelt it correctly.
flange? phlegm?
lol as long as it begins with 'f' i don't mind :P
neither.
i think we might need another clue... this is really hard.
Feet?
just realised the answer is quite literally staring you in the face.
now i know what it is, and i only just noticed, but you're actually being given the answer... but not by me.
Facemask?
In other, non-eyespy related news (and I'm really sorry for dragging the site down with F1 related news here),
"Autosport.com understands that Toro Rosso are leaning towards Sebastien Buemi and Takuma Sato as their line-up for next season."
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72253
nope.
haha :)
you’re an admin now? well done you :) {me - 85 comments ago}
Well... ...I've been a co-admin at Formula 1 Home since mid-2006 (and still am), but this is the first time I've been principal admin anywhere.
you make it sound like you didn't know before :P
:D
might've missed a comma.
It's a bit of a whale. Something to do with the tail.
fingers?
F1 minute?
beginning with f?... erm formula 1? font?
i feel a little silly that i don't know...it's one of those things that's sooo easy it's really difficult....
Fonts?
erm... feeds?
Feeds?
clever, but if they get that on the iss, i will eat my cap.
it's not geeky.
Finances?
Err...
Formatting?
more obvious than that.
something physical.
it's object. normally you can hold it / them. you might struggle with the one the spacemen are looking at though.
frog?
...... O.O
......O.O
er....
Files?
hahaha XD
inside the ISS?
they have frogs?
can't say for sure. i would expect so, but i haven't spotted one.
i know there is one, and maybe a second outside.
it is not a living thing.
No that's why they would have difficulty holding it. Clever huh?
How else do they prepare for Fantasy Racers?
:D
flags?
fan? but i suppose there isn't one staring me in the face...
yes, but again overestimating my intelligence.
w00t!
dave in nzl, i believe it is your turn.
Is that it?!?
yes.
Flags?! ..... where are flags staring me in the face?
specifically one flag, the big one on the wing.
oooo that's clever!!
I see no flags.
look at the blog posts. what discussion did i just have with jolly about?
countries / people on the iss.
All right - eye spy with my little eye something beginning with 'R'. I've have seen it in a photo, so I know there is one on board.
blog title - where are we still coming from?
btw.. i can't seem to 'click quote' any text that is in bold, e.g your 'w00t!'
i think there's one on the moon too, but lord knows if they can see it.
Actually, wikipedia says that it starts with T. The word starting with R is what we call them.
tis okay, doesn't work with italics either. it's on me list.
Damn those charity people get everywhere
huh? cryptic.
Oh yeah, that does make sense... :P
I can quote the bold w00t! It just doesn't come out bold
i was questioning my sanity for a bit there :)
i see... oh ok, not that obvious then. very clever though. i'll put it on the wiki list
on the realtime thing it was more obvious. in one comment it said "give me a clue" and right above it said "Perhaps none refers to those living on the international space station?".
radar?
to me... that isn't that obvious :P well done to Dave in NZL :) awesome guess.
No. And my elite google skills say the UK calls them both T or R.
i should've taken a screenshot. it was like jolly answered your question, except on another thread and in relation to a different conversation.
Thanks. I was googling for 'inside the ISS' and there were a string of flags in one of the images.
ahhh lol :D
rivets.
rocket?
No. - And I haven't yet got the hang of this multi-quote thing...
radio.
radio/transistor - I like it, but no.
are you sure?
;)
rudder / tail?
No. And I'm sure about liking the radio/transistor guess, too.
thruster/rocket?
No - good guess though, the 2 letters could end up being a gift or a curse!
Let's go to the new thread for the 27th (which it has been here for almost 14 hours already...). Does that mean I get my F1 news a day early?
wow..... am listening to the Chris Evans show from today on Radio 2 in bbc iplayer (cause someone told me to) and they were discussing F1... and Bernie (quiet a bit), and how he really should know better (regarding the new proposed medal system). I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have been discussing that a year ago.. Lewis being champ really has boasted people's interest f1... wow.
that and the fact bbc have the rights now.
Release / Toggle (For Landing Gear activator device)
yeah i suppose... what made me laugh was that it the presenter commented on the sport news, discussed Bernie and how much of an awful idea it is, and then asked for song suggestions they should play for Bernie, and other people that should know better. My favourite was 'should i stay or should i go' XD
now there's conversation thread waiting to happen :)
My guess is he should go. Am I right?
if he is gonna insist on stupid changes to f1 like medals... then yeah i so...
Yeah, but then who would be the 'comely old man' that young children will run to, that women will swoon over, that men want to be like?
Not Max - he's queer as eggs. Flavio? He'd get my vote. Although Renault would go straight to the dogs without him, IMHO.
