For those of us that enjoyed a bank holiday yesterday, it's straight back into the working week now. Nevertheless, there is plenty going on this week for us to discuss, and here are some of the things we've been talking about recently:

  • Mr C has been working hard on the new version of the Live Commenting, Live... Thing. There's a lot of detail on the introductory post, however I can preface it with this: it's awesome. Basically, you have each section in moveable boxes and you can decide what you want where. Check it out now.
  • The Circuit Character Cup has begun, and you can still vote on the two initial matchups. New posts will go up each day at 9pm, meaning you have 24 hours to vote on each one. The first blog post sees Monza against Shanghai and Interlagos against Valencia. I know who my money's on for both matchups. Get voting now.
  • Finally, Shaun has a great post on his site which talks about how hard it is to compare the greats to the current batch of F1 drivers, particularly Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. It's possibly a controversial topic, but the best ones are, aren't they?

That'll do it for now. Keep your thoughts coming on the new LCLT as it's early days yet and we're hoping to improve it as time goes on. As usual, I'll see you in the comments.

    Hello Journeyer

Did a little hiccup for a bit when I tried to open it in FF3

Hmmm... That happens to me often on the Doohickey when I have too many tabs open. :D May just be that it eats up too much resources right now?

    Hello Bassano. :)

Did a little hiccup for a bit when I tried to open it in FF3

Kathi, Lou and I have all had that. If you click the stop script button everything seems to work fine

  • Journeyer25/05/2009 at 23:30

Kathi, Lou and I have all had that. If you click the stop script button everything seems to work fine

So what's the script running then?

  • Bassano Clapper25/05/2009 at 23:30

Kathi, Lou and I have all had that. If you click the stop script button everything seems to work fine

I hit continue and left it to work through it, came back after checking my mail and it was fine. Will see if it occurs next time

    Thanks for the heads up

  • Bassano Clapper25/05/2009 at 23:31

So what's the script running then?

    Probably that movable boxes thing

  • Bassano Clapper25/05/2009 at 23:32

Hmmm... That happens to me often on the Doohickey when I have too many tabs open. :D May just be that it eats up too much resources right now?

Had just opened Firefox and was only the 3rd tab for me

[I'm usually way into double figures]

  • Journeyer25/05/2009 at 23:32

I hit continue and left it to work through it, came back after checking my mail and it was fine. Will see if it occurs next time

That's what I normally do too. Hehe. Very, very nice, Mr C. Loving it. :D Will stick with LCLT for a day or three. ;)

  • Bassano Clapper25/05/2009 at 23:32

So what's the latest today, anything new apart from Williams' submission?

  • Steven Roy25/05/2009 at 23:33

So what's the script running then?

No good asking me techical questions. The only thing I know id if I switch to a thread with no or few comments I don't get the script error. If there are a lot of comments I get it.

  • Flibster25/05/2009 at 23:33

Silly little thing - but a bargain if you don't have it already.

TOCA Race Driver 3 for the PC. £5

Limited time only at www.gog.com - I've used them for a while - they'r trustworthy.

It's a 5gb download though with no DRM at all. :D

  • Steven Roy25/05/2009 at 23:34

No news on anything that I have seen

  • Bassano Clapper25/05/2009 at 23:35

    No more yacht meetings then

Right, off to sleep now. I can afford a small lie-in tomorrow, I'm in from 11-8. Still gotta get up at 7 to get ready, then walk up to the train station, grab my train, then walk up to catch my bus to get to work.

Yup, up for 4 hours before I've even started. It's gonna be a loooooong day. Night!

go to bed, and count sheep :P

nah, stretching works for me,lie down then start at the top and stretch every muscle down your body, hold it for like 20 seconds, by the time you get down and back up again you'll feel so tired you'll fall asleep.

oooor, try as hard as possible to keep your eyes open and stay awake, eventually you fall asleep through concentration...

can you tell im an insomniac? lol

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:12

i feel really awake tonight, and it's so muggy as well..

Had some very light rain in London and it's cooled things down a little, maybe it's headed your way

I put something on the TV with the timer. Has to be something I've seen before with no loud noises. Old West Wing or Studio 60 has been great for me recently

happens to the best of us, i've been put on melatonin, it's basically a relaxant thats already naturally in the body so you can't get addicted, seems to work quite well generally.

I'm ashamed to say....that i have a playlist that i sometimes use made up of 5 songs....all from HSM3....works a treat! It's never failed lol

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:21

This is a very elegant little interface. Well done, Mr C.

Hey Dreary! Yup, I agree. :D It actually reminds me of the home page of... Windows Live. :P

When I was on 7 day shift patterns I used to take Nytol once every 3 weeks before my first early shift, eases you into drowsiness but can easily fight it if you want or need to. Recommend it only for short periods of sleeplessness though

Random F1 point... Monnaco is really hard on the gearboxes, and since most of the drivers will be on the 2ns race for the gearboxes, we could see a lot of replacements coming in for Istanbul and Silverstone.. either that or retirements

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:24

I'm ashamed to say....that i have a playlist that i sometimes use made up of 5 songs....all from HSM3....works a treat! It's never failed lol

hahah :D well it's good it works... i've not see a single HSM film i've not even heard one song all the way through and i intend it to stay that way :D

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:24

This is a very elegant little interface. Well done, Mr C.

There's a name I've not seen before, hello Sir (or madam ;) )

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:25

    Gaaaaaah, run! :D

    Haha! :P

Random F1 point... [Monaco] is really hard on the gearboxes, and since most of the drivers will be on the [2nd] race for the gearboxes, we could see a lot of replacements coming in for Istanbul and Silverstone.. either that or retirements

Hmmm... We might see a couple, but not a lot. Most gearboxes can easily do 3-4 race weekends now, even if one of them is Monaco. :D

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:25

hahah :D well it's good it works... i've not see a single HSM film i've not even heard one song all the way through and i intend it to stay that way :D

NO WAY?!!? i'm a tiny bit impressed, i don't know anyone who hasn't seen atleast one of them, or been dragged to see, or been force-listened to some songs.

    wow, just wow

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:26

    wow, just wow

Me too, never have, most likely never will

    [keeps fingers crossed]

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:27

    wow, just wow

    Club!

Hmmm... We might see a couple, but not a lot. Most gearboxes can easily do 3-4 race weekends now, even if one of them is Monaco. :D

what i don't get, is that you can replace all the gears in the gearbox and not get a penalty, but when i've rebuilt gearbox's the only other thing apart from gears is bearings, and a whole lot of oil, so why would you replace the whole gearbox beacuse you're basically getting a penalty for changing the gearbox casing?

i know road car and f1 gearboxes are alot different, but the principles the same

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:27

Me too, never have, most likely never will

    [keeps fingers crossed]

gooo onnnn, you know you want too ;)

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:28

hahah :D well it's good it works... i've not see a single HSM film i've not even heard one song all the way through and i intend it to stay that way :D

when you're not exposed to HSM and you didn't know what happened in Star Wars until we talked about it, that probably means you need to go to the cinemas more. :P

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:28

    wow, just wow

haha my friends that like HSM know that them forcing me to see a film would result in me not being very happy at all. they have tried to force me before but i can be pretty stubborn...

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:28

gooo onnnn, you know you want too ;)

    Hmmmm, not really

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:29

i know road car and f1 gearboxes are alot different, but the principles the same

I guess they have to replace it after an impact, like hamiltons, but what about the clutch components, i know nothing of engineering, but are they included?

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:29

haha my friends that like HSM know that them forcing me to see a film would result in me not being very happy at all. they have tried to force me before but i can be pretty stubborn...

i think you'd like it, atleast no loathe it. aslong as you accept that it's horribly cheeeeseeeey then all is good

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:30

what i don't get, is that you can replace all the gears in the gearbox and not get a penalty, but when i've rebuilt gearbox's the only other thing apart from gears is bearings, and a whole lot of oil, so why would you replace the whole gearbox beacuse you're basically getting a penalty for changing the gearbox casing?

Very good question. Not sure why this is the case, but I suspect they're only allowed to change 1 or 2 gears at any given time. If you need to change any more gears, you'd have to replace the whole thing instead...

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:30

when you're not exposed to HSM and you didn't know what happened in Star Wars until we talked about it, that probably means you need to go to the cinemas more. :P

You cant compare HSM to Star Wars!!!

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:30

i know road car and f1 gearboxes are alot different, but the principles the same

Easier to change a gearbox assembly in a hurry during a session but could be hydraulic leak, cracked casing from impact. Many things

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:30

I guess they have to replace it after an impact, like hamiltons, but what about the clutch components, i know nothing of engineering, but are they included?

ooh dont know, wouldnt have thought so.

on the crash front, gearbox's are part of the rearcrash structure, the whole rear suspension is mounted off them, so you could have a point there

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:30

I guess they have to replace it after an impact, like hamiltons, but what about the clutch components, i know nothing of engineering, but are they included?

we don't have a clutch pedal, but is there an electronic equivalent? i wouldn't think it's included, but i could be wrong...

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:30

You cant compare HSM to Star Wars!!!

S'all cool runnings to me ;)

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:31

when you're not exposed to HSM and you didn't know what happened in Star Wars until we talked about it, that probably means you need to go to the cinemas more. :P

haha when i was younger i didn't go to the cinema much so didn't see star wars... and HSM really isn't my type of film at all. I have to be in the right mood for cheesy american films.... sometimes my friends force me to see some of the really badly made rom coms, but they know that they aren't my favourite genre of film.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:31

You cant compare HSM to Star Wars!!!

They're both pop culture phenomena that everyone's watched! A fair comparison. :D

S'all cool runnings to me ;)

    Hahaha! :P

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:31

rom coms, Lou? You mean chick flicks. :P

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:31

You cant compare HSM to Star Wars!!!

But Star Wars and Cool Runnings is OK?

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:32

But Star Wars and Cool Runnings is OK?

    Yes... Both highly quotable..manly films

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:32

But Star Wars and Cool Runnings is OK?

    the man has a point

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:32

i think you'd like it, atleast no loathe it. aslong as you accept that it's horribly cheeeeseeeey then all is good

horribly cheesy songs and people jumping and dancing around a school is not my kinda film sadly... i'd prefer to watch a film like the painist or cool runnings :P

the painist! did he hurt the pianist? :P

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:34

I really dislike musicals, was so peeved when I found out Sweeney Todd was a Tim Burton musical. Stop singing and get on with the film puh-leeease

wait wait wait, you won't watch high school kids singing/dancing, but you will watch 4 guys from jamaica in lycra in a bobsleigh...

    hmm

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:37

rom coms, Lou? You mean chick flicks. :P

haha i'm not the average girl who likes watching cheesy romantic comedies all the time. they get boring and very predictable. lol they are alright, but as i say i'd rather watch a better film. :P

  • me26/05/2009 at 00:37

This is a very elegant little interface. Well done, Mr C.

    cheers dreary, cheers all.

So what's the script running then?

    Probably that movable boxes thing

it's just struggling with squeezing the comments in a box that is not only resizable and scrollable, but also movable.

should be fine on a new daily thread, no? when there's just a few comments it's fine. 500+ and i'm seeing issues.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:37

Have heard Mamma Mia is so bad it's good, just not for the right reasons

Hahaha! It's cheesiness at its best. :D

    :D

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:40

wow, you really aren't the average girl lol

haha i got a little upset with my friends around my birthday last year, cause what i really wanted to go was go and see the film - the boy in the stripped pyjamas but none of them wanted to because it would be too sad... so i had to go see a rom com instead. lol i got my own back by waking some of them up when i watched the race though haha

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:43

wait wait wait, you won't watch high school kids singing/dancing, but you will watch 4 guys from jamaica in lycra in a bobsleigh...

hahaha :) lol cool runnings isn't the same kinda cheesy.

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:43

You would be surprised at how some of us can compare films

Nothing surprises me at SPC anymore :)

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:44

Have found out that the Martini girl at Portier is called Jessiqa Pace

Apparently she was at the race and worried that she might be the cause of an accident!

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:45

Apparently she was at the race and worried that she might be the cause of an accident!

didn't DC say that the drivers asked for that advert to be taken down as it was too distracting... or was that a joke he made?

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:45

Apparently she was at the race and worried that she might be the cause of an accident!

Can't remember anyone going off there since Schuey stuffed it into the wall a few years back

    :D :D :D

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:46

Can't remember anyone going off there since Schuey stuffed it into the wall a few years back

Heidfeld slammed into the wall just under the ad in 2001. I think he's the most recent one. :D

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:46

didn't DC say that the drivers asked for that advert to be taken down as it was too distracting... or was that a joke he made?

Apparently it was true, cant remember where i read about it

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:46

didn't DC say that the drivers asked for that advert to be taken down as it was too distracting... or was that a joke he made?

Jake questioned that and he said it was serious

I can see it being true

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:47

Apparently, Lisa Dennis was at the paddock on Sunday. Interesting.

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:47

I can see it being true

that picture scares me a little... Lukeh is too good in photoshop... :P

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:47

BBC Quali, beginning with Jake and DC

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:48

Too much time on his hands, he should go into graphic design

    He has the skillz

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:48

he has waaaaaay too much time on hands though :P

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 00:49

I'm reading a very interesting document of a study of why men don't go into a primary teaching.

Can anyone name the primary (no pun intended) reason?

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:49

    He has the skillz

haha he certainly does, he'd be great in graphic design though you're right.

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 00:50

Apparently, Lisa Dennis was at the paddock on Sunday. Interesting.

    Strange

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:52

When I refresh the new lclt (for the new daily thread) the order of the boxes change :(

I guess this is a night owls issue only

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 00:52

BBC Quali, beginning with Jake and DC

There was an article somewhere too, where she said she was flattered but worried she could be the cause of an accident

  • me26/05/2009 at 00:54

When I refresh the new lclt (for the new daily thread) the order of the boxes change :(

    you've lost me?

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 00:55

When I refresh the new lclt (for the new daily thread) the order of the boxes change :(

Just tried it and mine does the same.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:55

Just tried it and mine does the same.

I don't think the LCLT is able to save your layout yet.

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:55

When I refresh the new lclt (for the new daily thread) the order of the boxes change :(

is that the same issue with it not remembering the order once you come back to it another day MrC?

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 00:56

I'm reading a very interesting document of a study of why men don't go into a primary teaching.

Can anyone name the primary (no pun intended) reason?

Hmmm... Interesting, but I have no idea. :)

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:56

    you've lost me?

I re-ordered the boxes, putting everything bar the posting section at the bottom. Refreshed to get the new daily thread in the drop down and the original order reappeared.

    Just an observation

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 00:56

    you've lost me?

If you shuffle the boxes then later press F5 they go back to their original positions

  • me26/05/2009 at 00:57

Just tried it and mine does the same.

I don't think the LCLT is able to save your layout yet.

oh right. yeah we highlighted that here:

"At present, the LCLT cannot remember your layout when you navigate away."

Dont tell me you've joined Joe under the sofa!

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:57

I didn't realise Bono was at Monaco and why is he wearing that silly wig?

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:58

Dont tell me you've joined Joe under the sofa!

    :D

    Did he ever reappear?

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:58

Dont tell me you've joined Joe under the sofa!

that would make recording the podcast with Joe easier...

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 00:58

Dont tell me you've joined Joe under the sofa!

Must be getting crowded under there

  • me26/05/2009 at 00:58

is that the same issue with it not remembering the order once you come back to it another day MrC?

yup, exactly that. there are so many possible variables...

    - box position

    - one pane or two panes

    - scroll bar position

    - new comments on or off

    - post selected

    - etc, etc.

it's a huge amount to snapshot every change and recall it on the fly, so for the moment we haven't even tried.

  • lou26/05/2009 at 00:59

I didn't realise Bono was at Monaco and why is he wearing that silly wig?

awww apparently Jenson's mum is really sweet! :D i like that she always wears a jenson badge too :)

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 00:59

it's a huge amount to snapshot every change and recall it on the fly, so for the moment we haven't even tried.

OK. Not a problem if everyone understands

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 00:59

"At present, the LCLT cannot remember your layout when you navigate away."

I hadn't finished reading the instructions

    [Typical engineer]

  • me26/05/2009 at 01:00

I didn't realise Bono was at Monaco and why is he wearing that silly wig?

do you think he's wearing a badge with jenson's name on to confuse people?

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 01:00

it's a huge amount to snapshot every change and recall it on the fly, so for the moment we haven't even tried.

Looking at your list, just remembering the first two would be perfect for me. The others just cause unneccessary complexity.

That said, take your time. :D

  • me26/05/2009 at 01:00

Dont tell me you've joined Joe under the sofa!

    :)

    Did he ever reappear?

    nope!

that would make recording the podcast with Joe easier...

    hadn't thought of that.

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 01:01

do you think he's wearing a badge with jenson's name on to confuse people?

Maybe it is so she remembers who she is supporting or in case she gets drunk people know who to return her too

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 01:01

do you think he's wearing a badge with jenson's name on to confuse people?

My other thought was, isn't Jessica's conjoined twin a lot older than her?

interesting point. will have a think.

    nope!

No Aside until Turkey, then? Would've loved to hear what he thought of the whole FOTA malarkey. It'll probably be done by the time we're in Turkey...

aww i think it's nice she was able to be there for jenson yesterday on the grid and stuff cause last year we was going to be but had a bad back or something and had to watch the tv coverage from her room.... wow... i scared myself with that knowledge...

  • Jon Waldock26/05/2009 at 01:06

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 01:08

It'll be up to us then. :D

It could be worse. It could have been fake SPC banners. That would be really worrying

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 01:08

    sidepostcast?

  • lou26/05/2009 at 01:12

I've not had any F1 dreams yet, fake or otherwise :)

f1 dreams always turn out to be so strange for me, i have a reoccurring one that is just me walking down the pitlane at silverstone seeing all the teams, and having chats with race engineers and random people, and taking the odd picture. it's really strange. and then before i know it i'm having a cup of tea in the paddock in the sun... then i wake up. it's really odd.

if it keeps repeating, it's usually a sign that it'll happen for real in the future.

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 01:32

I heard a nice little story today

Apparently at the McLaren HQ they have electric pump soap dispensers in all the bathrooms. However, they always squirted out a little bit of soap when you removed your hand and left a little mess on the sink

Ron didn't like this so had them re-engineered to automatically pump when you put your hand beneath them but then suck back a little when your hand was removed

May not be true but of Ron, I could believe it :D

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 01:32

    Night Lou & Journeyer

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 01:35

May not be true but of Ron, I could believe it :D

    That. is. COOL. :D Hahaha!

But they'd save a lot of money if they just used manual dispensers. :P

    Night Lou & Journeyer

I won't be heading to bed, it's still nice and sunny here. Unless you are?

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 01:37

I won't be heading to bed, it's still nice and sunny here. Unless you are?

No, I'll be around for a bit dipping in and out

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 01:38

But they'd save a lot of money if they just used manual dispensers. :P

Just not High Tech enough for Ron, he can probably calculate how much soap per bathroom is being used to see who is the cleanest

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 01:39

Ron didn't like this so had them re-engineered to automatically pump when you put your hand beneath them but then suck back a little when your hand was removed

I know a little bit about how dispensers are designed and things like the nozzles on shaving foam cans have features designed into them in the latest generation to stop drops forming on them and dripping. I would not be surprised if Ron had done what has been said.

  • Bassano Clapper26/05/2009 at 01:42

What is the deal with the "Fake twitter" thing. I get alot less info than you guys in Europe, so help me

I think it all started with Fake Steve Jobs. Now everyonw wants to be a "fake" in every field

  • Joe in Fla26/05/2009 at 02:49

I have only talked to one F1 driver ever, on-line or otherwise, Scott Speed. Oh wait, I was on a flight with Takumo Sato after his 6th place in Montreal. So I won't hang around online to talk to someone I don't know who they are

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 02:49

What is the deal with the "Fake twitter" thing. I get alot less info than you guys in Europe, so help me

I have only been using twitter for a week so I am only just starting to find out about it. Basically there are fans who have acounts as fake drivers and they respond to real events. Tonight it got a bit weirder than normal when fake Seb Buemi's mother showed up and started an argument with fake Piquet jr.

Some of the fakes are really good and really entertaining. Best thing is to follow a few and see if you enjoy it or not. I am sure as many folk will hate it as enjoy it.

  • Paul26/05/2009 at 02:51

You won't see me defending twitter, I think it's a waste of time. Apart from the dubious entertainment value, I haven't seen much of a reason for it.

  • Joe in Fla26/05/2009 at 02:52

I will only claim face to face as contact. By the way, when I met Scott Speed (hopefully next years USF1 driver) I talked to his Mom for a while

the reason for twitter is pure and simple. It got me into a mclaren event that i otherwise wouldn have known about let alone been on the guest list for. In other news i just put $10 on roger to win the french open. There i go betting with my heart not my head again.

    Loving the new LCLT :)

    Preferring it over doohickey? :P

    Morning, Alex!

  • Alex Andronov26/05/2009 at 05:13

    Preferring it over doohickey? :P

Oooh not sure yet... I'll have to wait and see.

I have always felt they have very different functions and haven't ever really played favourites.

So I doohicky for most of the time when multiple threads are being used and live comment for the races and live events (debrief / panel / parade etc).

So I don't know if that will change but it could do I guess.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 05:18

So I [doohickey] for most of the time when multiple threads are being used and live comment for the races and live events (debrief / panel / parade etc).

Yeah, just about makes sense. And doohickey is for the mobile too.

That said, if people start using LCLT more often, it might allow for cleaner threads and conversations. :)

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 05:37

Ahhh... One good thing about my work laptop (that doesn't allow anything more than IE6) - it comes with RealPlayer.

Tried using it for iPlayer for the first time. I miss Radio 1. :D

Indeed. Steven revelead that he has both the doohickey and LCLT open when catching up. And the Doohickey works well on the iPhone...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/05/2009 at 06:12

I heard a nice little story today

Apparently at the McLaren HQ they have electric pump soap dispensers in all the bathrooms. However, they always squirted out a little bit of soap when you removed your hand and left a little mess on the sink

Ron didn't like this so had them re-engineered to automatically pump when you put your hand beneath them but then suck back a little when your hand was removed

May not be true but of Ron, I could believe it :D

Ahh yes that was on Gareth Jones on Speed a few weeks ago. Sounds like an urban legend but could be true!

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 06:20

And the Doohickey works well on the iPhone...

    VERY well. :D

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 06:21

I didn't know you can make urban legends out of electric pump soap dispensers. :P

A rather interesting article about Prince Albert of Monaco. Sounds like a decent chap!

I hadn't realised that Vijay Mallya is also a Doctor. People always refer to Dr Mario Theissen but I haven't really seen them refer to Dr Vijay Mallya.

    Interesting.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 06:43

I hadn't realised that Vijay Mallya is also a Doctor. People always refer to Dr Mario Theissen but I haven't really seen them refer to Dr Vijay Mallya.

Really? I guess Dr Mallya wasn't that fond of Dr Kolles. :P

Maybe Vijay's doctorship is a PhD?

  • Alex Andronov26/05/2009 at 06:49

Maybe Vijay's doctorship is a PhD?

But so is Mario's. Theissen has two doctorates one in Mechanical Engineering and one in Engineering.

Ah perhaps it is because Mallya's is honorary.

He has an actual bachelor of commerce degree from the university of Calcutta. And an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from California Southern University, Santa Ana. (According to Forbes).

I put something on the TV with the timer. Has to be something I've seen before with no loud noises. Old West Wing or Studio 60 has been great for me recently

Can't fall asleep to them - get too engrossed. :D

Both excellent series. Shame Studio 60 was canned after 1 series though.

I've found that audio books are best for me. Currently going through the entire Terry Pratchett catalogue of books.

Still only get a couple of hours a night though.

The 'In Our Time' Podcast ALWAYS sends me to sleep - so dry and boring!

When I take my morning nap on the train I do it to Buzz Out Loud as I always fall asleep after the news (the best bit anyway!)

i missed a west wing discussion? watched all 7 series in the last 6 months - the only effort I've ever made to be completely stupid with DVDs. I won't be doing anything like that again in a hurry... love the show but i was too obsessed to always get to the next episode...

I never saw any of it when it was being shown on TV - then I bought the DVD set. Watched all 7 series, pretty much back to back in a matter of weeks.

    Loved it.

"you won't understand any of it, but you'll sense important things are happening". I loved that show. We had about 2 years without it in Oz due to it not being watched so the network kept shifting timeslots and eventually dumped it until it was picked up years later by a new network. I spoke to the programming department of the original TV station and they (unofficially) said people would rather (I forget the phrase exactly) dumb **** than something intelligent.

Hey Alex, was it you requesting summer songs yesterday for the garden. I heard a great classic last night when I was dealing with the heat. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Summertime. Slow, but ooh so smoooooth.

Ahh the networks ... shift the timeslot and then drop it because no one was watching the programme - because of confusion with the timeslot probably!

Some countries, like Italy, allow people to call themselves Dr for a Bachelor degree. honorary degrees (in my humble opinion) devalue the real ones that people earn.

I have enough time issues with getting through all the podcasts.

Same here - I would have to sell KUB and SUT to buy a better driver but at the moment, that driver would not score more points than KUB and SUT combnied. So I stick with what i have for a good spread!

For me, the reading is the easy bit. I dislike having to go back and listen to myself as I edit, but it's all good fun.

In my small time radio career, I've put together a few prepackaged pieces and the relistening to something you've spent lots of time on is annoying.

i was once listening to an audio tour somewhere in france and they forgot to go back, otherwise "let's do this again" followed by a partial reread would never have made it to the recording.

heh I guess its fair enough, but I know as an F1 fan I like to see clips from other countries and it seems silly they come down on them so hard when they don't even show these things on TV in other places anyway.

And the fact that the BBC are geo-locked on all of their clips too ... other sports are not half as restrictive!

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 09:51

Well the BBC is slightly different as it has licence payers to think of.

But what about the F1 website? I can watch loads of news and sports clips on the rest of the BBC pages but not a single F1 clip can be accessed outside the UK?

I accept the argument about why I can't access the iPlayer, but short clips on the website?

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 09:54

In that case it must be part of the deal they've done with Bernie.

is this from the US? If yes, it's on SPEED, which is a cable channel you pay for. that may explain why this can't fall under fair use.

Yeah I think so too :( The silly thing is, there are so many ways around it that they may as well not bother restricting it in the first place. One day FOM will wake upo and provide a web streaming service - and make TONS of money!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/05/2009 at 09:58

Fair enough, but SPEED or whoever are not going to lose revenue from a short clip which they may never broadcast again anyway - and both the channel and F1 get free promotion from the clip too!

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 09:58

It does seem odd that Bernie wouldn't have dollar signs glinting in his eyes given how many people will pay for a decent online sports feed.

It's the same with all old media, though, they can only see the piracy, but mostly people pirate because they haven't got any other access. Eventually, they'll all come round, and Bernie will be the last to do so.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 09:59

as long as TV ratings remain high (which they are), Bernie won't come round to it. it'll have to be up to his successor (whoever that is) to introduce it.

It's the mp3 argument all over again isn't it? In a few years the TV companies will be making most of their money from Net streaming like mp3's are to iTunes now. We even have a cable box that just transmits TV via an Internet link in Denmark...

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 10:04

It's the mp3 argument all over again isn't it?

Absolutely. The music industry has already started the transition, although they've still got a way to go yet. The movie and TV companies are a way behind, but they'll get there eventually.

    Hi Morning All!!

I'm well up for some Tremanying today, what's the number? There's a team massively overdue a Tremanying!!

Also does anyone else not actually like Brawn GP? Is that allowed?

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 10:09

    Hey RCC!

Also does anyone else not actually like Brawn GP? Is that allowed?

Apparently, there are people who are starting not to like them, with their current domination of F1. I think some of them hated it from the start, but are just going public with it now. It shouldn't be allowed, but what can ya do?

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 10:10

I got a little bored after win number 3 so win number 5 is trying my patience. I definitely don't dislike Brawn as such, I just like lots of winners in a season.

I'm sad to say I'm one of the ones that doesn't like them!

Somethings wrong when they do 1 test and then dominate all year. It's like at school when you spend all week preparing for a test then some smary geek does not revision at all and still gets higher grades. I'm stuck between being patriotic and yet not actually liking Button at all.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 10:14

  • Benji26/05/2009 at 10:18

If it was an established team winning 5 out of 6 I would be finding this season repetitive by now (unless it was Williams) but with it being Brawn GP Im just really happy for all of them, it is really nice to see them giving a different member of the team going to the podium after each win.

  • Amy26/05/2009 at 10:19

I hear this a lot, but I don't view them as a "new team" as such. I know their last minute rescue was great, but to me they're pretty much still Honda.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 10:20

When I was at school, that was me. And its true, people hated it.

    So you're a geek, then? :D

But seriously, let's remember that many teams did 2009 regs testing in 2008. I'm pretty certain Honda did this (at Ross' insistence) at least a couple of times. And even then, Brawn ran at 3 tests before Melbourne this year...

  • RCC (aka rockingcopsecorner)26/05/2009 at 10:20

yeah ditto, I could never revise, much prefer exams over coursework etc.

I wanna see them challenged (Brawn) and not feel like my Brit GP 09 ticket is an expensive waste to watch 2 white cars trundle round for 60 laps

If anyone wants a read on the Wii F1 2009 game, and a few new screenshots, check this out:

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/f1-2009-hands-on

It's a good detailed read into what to expect. It doesn't look the most beautiful game to look at al all to be honest but they're accomadating for both casual fans wanting a quick play and hardcore fans wanting the full experience (strategy, fuel, full weekend, etc) which is good for the Wii :)

  • Amy26/05/2009 at 10:20

For me, this is VERY different. Honda's management style is very different to Ross, so that in turn creates a different culture within the team. Sure, they may have the same resources, but it's how they're used and how they work together that make it so different.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 10:21

My one question is - does it have lots of driving aids that basically means you could be driving on train tracks? Cos that's the only way I make it round a single lap.

    Transmission

    Car damage

    Difficulty

    AI difficulty

    Steering assist

    Braking Assist

    Driving Line indicator

    Braking zones indicator

Thats all I can think of... so yeah, 15 is quite the assistance!

My favourite is the F1 game we had on... PS2 I think, which had a nice green line all the way round the track. If you went off it too much, it just bumped you back on. Switched on the braking aids too and all I had to do was keep my finger on the accelerator.

    Completely pointless :)

  • Benji26/05/2009 at 10:32

On the last F1 game was it F1 2006? if you went off the track your car would slow down for upto 14 seconds as a penalty!

Still anger's me to this day that Yuji Ide was robbed of winning the Italian GP by going wide on exit of Ascari chicane! :-(

That was one of the worst things about the Sony games, if you cut corners you wouldn't get warnings, or a drive through or anything, it'd just chuck you in 2nd gear for the time you said, usually at least 8 seconds. Horribly annoying.

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 10:35

Hehehe. For some reason I don't have the co-ordination on driving games to steer, change gear and brake and all that.

Something like Tomb Raider is easy. Run, jump, grab, roll, shoot, all fine. Steering? Much too hard.

Just would've been more sensible to be given 3 strikes or something though me thinks, like what we saw with massa at the weekend. So annoying to fight your way through the field, take a corner wrong on accident then be stuck for 15 seconds with loads of cars flying past and nothing you can do because of the way they set it up :(

It's a matter of knowing what it will and won't allow. It was tricky at the start, but once I figured it out, I rarely got penalized.

A good rule of thumb is to approach the corner from the outside line, turning in and hitting the apex mid corner and aiming for the outside of the corner on the exit. Takes some practice and you end up feeling your way through...

I guess we'll find out after Turkey on that one. Looks like it's going to be a proper litmus test for Red Bull and BMW with their super-duper-double-deck-diffuser-designs!

Apparently, there are people who are starting not to like them, with their current domination of F1. I think some of them hated it from the start, but are just going public with it now. It shouldn’t be allowed, but what can ya do

I’m sad to say I’m one of the ones that doesn’t like them!

Somethings wrong when they do 1 test and then dominate all year. It’s like at school when you spend all week preparing for a test then some smary geek does not revision at all and still gets higher grades. I’m stuck between being patriotic and yet not actually liking Button at all.

You sound like my Uncle now… and that ain’t good

How can we say we don't like them without sounding like an uncle! Usually it's not enough to just say you don't like them!

Ah no it's just what you said is remarkably similar to what he said... and it was very much a case of he didn't like Brawn winning because they were too new and the 'proper teams' were disadvantaged in some way...

Id definately be interested in being on a panel, it really does come across that you are all having fun and it is fun to listen to aswell.

Everyone else is great on the panel too but for some reason you and Steven Roy are quite distinctive, you seem to be the regulars that is perhaps why.

I don't think anyone hates them, and i think everyone acknowleges that it's one amazing thing they've done with that car. but i think lots of people want to see other people win, and are getting bored of the same car winning each race.

    Raikkonen's form delights Ferrari boss

Last sentence is a big deal:

Ferrari just threw another hand-crafted spanner into the works!

Which is why I think F1 fans may be whinging a bit. We were sad for Jenson last year, now we're happy, now we're bored of him winning? Confused over here!

A lot of journos are certain that Kimi is leaving at the end of the year and Alonso is taking his place. The weird thing is, you get the impression the team aren't happy with his performance and then Luca sings his praises? Ferrari are sending mixed messages this year...

No, not bored of him winning, it's great, but after all the hype of these new regs that were going to make overtaking better, 1 driver has won 5 races, and it dosent matter who that driver is, it could be massa for all i care, but after a while it just gets a bit boring

It's because nothing is set in stone yet. As long as Kimi meets the targets, he can stay. If he doesn't, he'll be sent off. But right now, Alonso may or may not be in a red car in 2010.

I think a large part of those numbers are because these people are sent by sponsors. That's one of the first things that get cut in belt-tightening times. Those numbers will go up again once the recession ends.

    what i don’t get, is that you can replace all the gears in the gearbox and not get a penalty, but when i’ve rebuilt gearbox’s the only other thing apart from gears is bearings, and a whole lot of oil, so why would you replace the whole gearbox beacuse you’re basically getting a penalty for changing the gearbox casing? {Comment #60}

The non-penalty only applies if the gearbox gear change is before qualifying. The bearings can't be changed, so if one ends up in the wrong place...

  • Scott in Italy26/05/2009 at 12:13

    because he is the messiah

He's not the messiah he's a very naughty boy

Because if you vaguely followed F1 in Australia, Mark was talked about as a future star for years on tv. It was nice to follow him through, just like the seeing Lewis in those old magazine for the last 10 years. But more accurately, journalism always works like that. If something happens overseas, for two days that's fine reporting the drama, but then you need to find someone that is from the area where the story will be shown, otherwise people think it is too far away and not relevant. I don't agree with this but journos tell me this happens.

I get quite a lot of F1 racing dreams, though most of them wouldn't interest you since they're either mental replays of races that have already happened or ones that appear to be a extension of the analysis process I go through when, for example, I see the weights after qualifying.

I just kind of caught up with all the Brawn debate from earlier.

    !LONG COMMENT ALERT!

I like Jenson but I don't think he's as good a driver as some of the others on the field. However, some are saying that Jenson doesn't deserve to win. It's difficult for me to understand what "deserve" means when this season shows so strongly how important the car is to a driver.

It's fair to say that Lewis beat / is beating Hekki pretty easily. And depending on your opinion he beat Alonso in his rookie season (if you don't believe that bit then read the sentence as "he got very close to Alonso in his rookie season"). Jenson hasn't really been able to dominate his team-mates. That has always worried me about him.

Jenson deserved a win (or several) to make up for all the years of terrible cars that he had. But then people started asking the uncomfortable question... Does he deserve to win the world championship. Like they did with Massa last year.

It's the same question people have been asking about Brawn earlier. Do they deserve to win when they just arrived in the sport?

The answer to all of these questions is very simple for me. Formula 1 is not a driver sport, it's a team sport. The team works together. The team are hugely influential on the drivers performance.

Jenson had faith in Ross Brawn. Brawn knew that if he built Jenson a good car he could win the championship. They, as a unit, have pulled off possibly the largest upset in F1 history. And people are asking if he or they deserve the championship?

Regardless of the jokes that people make, your granny could not drive an F1 car. It is hard to do. But a large part of the sport is working as a leader in your team. It's what Schumacher did before and in many ways it's what Jenson is doing over at Brawn. He is the lead driver at Brawn.

Lewis works for McLaren, the mechanics don't seem to look up to him. Who do the mechanics look up to at Ferrari? Nobody. The mechanics are unled. They don't want to do it for their driver. But I bet everyone in that Brawn team over the off season knows how much Jenson committed himself to that team. They know that he cut his salary to keep the team going. They were working for their driver.

That doesn't make Jenson a faster driver, no. But it might well make him a better driver. And Brawn definitely deserve it.

As Bernie said when Ferrari won all those times, "it's not Ferrari's fault they are so fast, it's everyone else's fault that they are all too slow".

But yes the racing isn't very close, moment to moment, the racing isn't as exciting as it could be. But what Brawn are doing as a whole really is very exciting. At least it is to me.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/05/2009 at 12:30

    I hadn’t realised that Vijay Mallya is also a Doctor. People always refer to Dr Mario Theissen but I haven’t really seen them refer to Dr Vijay Mallya. {Comment #220}

Possibly because people have an image of PhD holders that does not include hosting parties on the largest boat in Monaco harbour or wearing vast amounts of "bling". Then again, people with honourary doctorates don't often use their titles, otherwise certain parts of the celebrity world would be littered with doctors.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 12:32

Yup, if they finish the job, this will easily be the biggest upset in F1 history.

I think those who say he's undeserving are those who think it's just the car that's good. True, having a good car helps but Jenson has still dominated the field and his teammate so he must be quite good. These people do not understand how bad his other cars were so they see him as lucky and undeserving.

    Long day ahead i fear

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2009 at 12:40

    Very good points there! Do they edit FIF1 and Williams on the Monday after the race, even if it’s recorded on Sunday? {Comment #285}

I think FIF1's gets edited on Monday, possibly stretching into Tuesday (presumably depending on the length and complexity of the material to be edited).

Annoyingly the Monaco ForceCast still isn't there...

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2009 at 12:44

    Somethings wrong when they do 1 test and then dominate all year. It’s like at school when you spend all week preparing for a test then some smary geek does not revision at all and still gets higher grades. I’m stuck between being patriotic and yet not actually liking Button at all. {Comment #320}

As someone who found revision was usually counter-productive, I fell into that category. I don't think anyone hated me for exam success - the ones that did the hating already hated me for thinking exams were fun in the first place...

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2009 at 12:47

    you can’t not revise and still get an A for a subject when you never went to the lectures and had no knowledge of the subject in the first place {Comment #337}

Did you sign up for a second degree in beverage studies then? That seemed to be a popular course where I studied (though there it was given a title of "drunken studies" because the few times some of the people "enrolled" turned up for their primary degree, they were either slightly drunk or nursing a hangover)...

I'm the same. I'm happy with how I live my life, don't need a student reputation to live up to to enjoy myself :)

  • Amy26/05/2009 at 12:55

You have us, Heikki, and F1 to thank for that. ;)

Would you judge me if I said I was currently watching a review of Monaco from the Finnish broadcasters?

I am awesome at this Finnish language thing.

"Saimme varoituksen FIA:Ita. Älä leikkaa enää shikaaneja!" means "we have had another warning from the FIA, do not cut the chicane!" apparently.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 12:56

ESPN Brazil reporting something very interesting...

    http://espnbrasil.terra.com.br/formula1/noticia/51966_REVISTA+APONTA+QUE+GOOGLE+PODE+SER+O+NOVO+PATROCINADOR+DA+BRAWN

    Key words: Google and Brawn

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/05/2009 at 12:56

I definitely have a lot more money to spend on fun things than my more "I go out 6 nights a week" friends ;)

I'm the same. I'm happy with how I live my life, don't need a student reputation to live up to to enjoy myself :)

Often the party types are actually the unhappy ones overcompensating anyway! Just be yourself, that's the easiest way to be happy. When you force yourself otherwise, that's when life is a drag!

Woah; surely not a google title sponsor?

Woah; surely not a google title sponsor?

I wanna read the article, but the page is taking forever to load.

But if it's a title sponsor... I will just be awe-struck. And Richard Branson will be told to eat his heart out...

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2009 at 12:58

    As Gavin said, there are some Sidepodpeeps going though, and perhaps an unofficial meetup will occur. {Comment #389}

With regard to that meet-up, I notice that of the three Sidepodpeeps confirmed in the wiki}, we all have Friday in common. Would Friday after second practise at the Copse E-Zone make sense, or should it be somewhere/somewhen different?

I'd like to confirm a day/time quite soon because there are other people from around the internet I'd like to invite as well.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 12:59

    What's Brazilian for GMM? ;)

Hey, it's ESPN, so it has some credibility to it. But I want to read the full article.

eader of the world's construtotes the Brawn GP live a great moment within the tracks. However, behind the scenes the atmosphere is not so nice, especially with Richard Branson, owner of Virgin company, main sponsor of the team. According to the electronic magazine 'GPWeek', the team is not satisfied with the current payments and already looking for new investors, including Google.

Larry Page, one of the founders of the website was seen in the race in Monaco, which raised the chances that he would be interested in sponsoring the leader of the Formula 1 season.

Currently, it is speculated that Virgin pay U.S. $ 400 thousand per month (about U.S. $ 810 thousand) of exposure models in BGP 001, Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, a figure considered low by Brawn GP.

Another reason to shake the relationship between the two sides was the presence of Richard Branson in the motorhome of opponents of Red Bull during the race in Montecarlo.

  • lou26/05/2009 at 13:04

    Does anyone understand Portuguese?

have translated it in google. Don't read too much into it, it is basically putting fuel on the rumours that were around this weekend that things aren't too peachy between Brawn GP and Branson... just cause he was seen in the Red Bull hospitality area (where loads of celebs could be found) during the weekend. It just says that Brawn GP are reportedly looking for other sponsors including Google. But tbh they obviously were going to look for other sponsors because they can now get a much better price than they could have done in Australia. Nothing to get excited about really.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/05/2009 at 13:04

sure. I see GPWEEK in it, though. *Rushes off to check current issue*.

It's in there. Conjecture and Paddock gossip - nothing more solid than a few sightings...

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 13:05

    Hmmm... much rumor, little substance.

Remember too that Google was connected to this same franchise before. In its previous life as Honda, Google was being floated as a potential title sponsor for the Earthdreams program. Nothing came out of it...

  • lou26/05/2009 at 13:05

i've been seeing these rumours all weekend, nothing in it atm though, they are just rumours.

I'm wondering what Mr C has in store for the Doohickey to make it catch up with LCLT

  • Alianora La Canta26/05/2009 at 13:16

    The source is F1-Live via a GMM story. What’s the story? {Comment #437}

The story is that there are four deposits on the table, meaning that any team needing a cheap Cosworth supply (yes Williams, I mean you) can have one. If there'd been fewer than four deposits, then each contract would have been at a different rate, making it just like any other engine contract and possibly an unreachable price for some teams that might otherwise have been interested.

  • Christine26/05/2009 at 13:16

I'm wondering what Mr C has in store for the Doohickey to make it catch up with LCLT

Not much, I don't think. The doohickey does it's job very well and has already had the bulk of the attention.

It was the LCLT that needed to catch up.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 13:17

nothing particularly exciting, unless anyone has ideas for new features?

next on the list (after bug fixing) is:

    - site redesign

    - desktop doohickey

    in that order.

From my understanding, the 10 teams have a reserved spot for 2010 if they enter by Friday. However, if they do NOT enter by then, they lose that reserved spot, so it'll become first-come-first-served for the remaining spots.

Basically, it's a question of whether or not Max really has more than 3 new entries. If he has, FOTA is in trouble (unless Toyota are really dropping out, leaving 4 vacancies). If not, Max will look rather silly...

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 13:25

Lene is quite a popular name over here...

  • lou26/05/2009 at 14:01

Well it worked for Fry in his travels from the year 2000 to the year 3000 in Futurama so I firmly believe thats the case, as Futurama is no doubt a worthy source of trust for such issues.

hahaha when i first started reading this i thought you were referring to Nick Fry! ahaha :D

    worked for no doubt.

I'm curious as to how Mansell was adored while he was in F1 and is scorned upon now - how the heck will Lewis cope when his career ends?

Mansell had a group of fans who thought he was great but there were a lot of people who thought he was a whingeing, maoning PITA. I started out as a fan but a combination of the above and the drama queen an inability to say I and not we bugged me to the point where I hated him being on screen.

FR Update: Vettel's value only dropped this morning. Now there's a delayed reaction - and I hate it. I bought back Vettel already, thinking his price had bottomed out. I didn't factor in the bank holiday... *sighs* Oh well.

Easy. You pick drivers who do really badly and dump them before everyone else does and buy drivers who are doing better than expected.

I still haven't got up to $50 million yet so I think I probably just got lucky this time.

  • Journeyer26/05/2009 at 15:21

Easy. You pick drivers who do really badly and dump them before everyone else does and buy drivers who are doing better than expected.

But all my drivers do well... Except Vettel, which was why I dumped him. But I picked him back up too early. Most people only made their updates on Monday night. :(

I find myself very conflicted because at the end of Monaco I was happy that Jenson won it, but disappointed that it was so easy for them.

You have to look at it from the 'He bloody well deserves it' perspective ;)

It was the dullest Monaco ever though

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 15:46

A good rule of thumb is to approach the corner from the outside line, turning in and hitting the apex mid corner and aiming for the outside of the corner on the exit. Takes some practice and you end up feeling your way through...

The other thing you should try is taking a slightly later apex until you build up speed. If you apex later than ideal you will be a bit slower but if you apex early you will go off on the exit so it is better to be later then gradually apex eralier as you build speed.

Please, why are people wasting their breathe comparing the current crop of drivers to the greats of F1? comparing Button to the greats is absolutey laughable and so far, Hamilton career to date is equal to JV's carreer in his third season. As much as people here love to say that JV was/is rubvlish, I an still waiting for Hamilton to win the Indy 500, which is like doing to decent Grand Prix back to back with half again the field....

No, the Greats = the men like Fangio, Stewart, Graham Hill, and Lauda will still have to wait for the dust to settle before history finally decides to allow Prost, Senna, Schumacher to entered their numbers and debate about Alsono before these guys get a chance...

Kamikazing your way to a championship should DQ a driver from being a "great".... That takes out Senna, Prost and Schumacher.

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 15:51

I an still waiting for Hamilton to win the Indy 500, which is like doing to decent Grand Prix back to back with half again the field....

I was wondering this the other night, which would be a greater challenge physicaly, Monaco GP or the 500?

I was thinking Monaco, although it doesnt have the G-forces of Indy, The stop start and wheel movement at Monaco is surely far greater?

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 15:54

    Raikkonen's form delights Ferrari boss

Last sentence is a big deal:

"On a track where talent is important Kimi has shown what he is able to do."

Ferrari just threw another hand-crafted spanner into the works!

Or put another way the car is no good. If the driver can look good on a track where the driver is more important than the car then the reason he looks bad elsewhere is the car.

  • Flibster26/05/2009 at 15:54

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 16:00

I was wondering this the other night, which would be a greater challenge physicaly, Monaco GP or the 500?

Monaco is a lot harder physically. Indy has no real speed difference so there is no braking or acceleratin loads on the driver. Indy is like a billiard table compared to Monaco so the driver doesn't get shaken to bits and of course Indy has constant yellow flags where the driver can sleep fro 10 laps.

Kamikazing your way to a championship should DQ a driver from being a "great".... That takes out Senna, Prost and Schumacher.

You are even harsher than me. I think itis fair to try to compare drivers from other eras. Fans have always done that and always will. Generally people's views on the ability/[erformance of drivers is based on very little. There are a load of people who think Hamilton got the McLaren drive in the first place due to luck and wa lucky to get a championship last year and he is the biggest cheat in the history of the sport because he lied to the stewards in Australia. Their whole opinion of him is based on him going straight into a top team and a couple of clashes with th stewards. Some of them will never change that opinion regradless what he does.

Samewith JV. Some people can't see past the BAR thing and th fact that in his last season his performance was not that good. His previous record andth family history that encouraged him to set up his own team are ignored. People forget how Schumacher reacted to him prior to Jerez 97. Hakkinen may be rated as Schumacher's biggest rival but Schumcher clearly rated JV as a real threat for a couple of seasons and I don't rememeber ever hearing of Schumacher racing anyone other than JV on the public roads.

    yeah, it's real.

at a guess, i'd say the people who made the site also make a twitter client and realised they'd screwed up. so they're using this to get everyone to upgrade to the latest version or something.

either that, or because they've accounted for it, they're highlighting it to everyone else.

Brawn GP's eNews email just revealed a new Q&A thing for the website...

Every month, the Brawn GP team will answer 10 questions received through the team's website from registered fans. Your questions can be addressed directly to our drivers Jenson and Rubens or to a specific member of the team or just to the team in general.

The new feature goes live today with the first answers to be online on Monday 15 June.

also..... a RUBENS BARRICHELLO SIGNED HELMET COMPETITION.

    Awesome!!!

Too much white for my liking. A black/yellow background would be better.

  • Lukeh26/05/2009 at 17:32

Ahh, the competition starts thursday. should proof read more and stop staring at the pic of the helmet.

  • Pat W26/05/2009 at 17:32

Evening all, a quick catch up on comments before I disappear again to do homework :-)

Why the sad face? It's just something I do to amuse myself, and hope to earn a couple of hundred Ks in the process. :)

Ah it's just too much effort. What would be really funny if the FR guy made a credit crunch on driver trading...

Agreed - I've set myself Button, Vettel and Glock (can't afford any more) and I'm just leaving it like that for a while. I'll still keep an eye on scores and might tinker with the 3rd position if Glock keeps doing badly, otherwise that's it..

For me, the reading is the easy bit. I dislike having to go back and listen to myself as I edit, but it's all good fun.

I have decided I hate the sound of my own voice :( I only listen back on the panels becuase the others make me laugh so much!

I still haven't listened to the one I was on. My voice is better than expected but I still don't like hearing it.

  • RG26/05/2009 at 17:33

it's not the budget that's the issue for me. it's that FR has gone from a low maintenance game to a very high maintenance game.

that said, the new rules do appear to be generating a lot more discussion and debate this year so it's all good. even if i'm just a spectator to the main event.

i'm no longer unhappy cause i just stopped playing and now i watch.

Kamikazing your way to a championship should DQ a driver from being a “great”…. That takes out Senna, Prost and Schumacher.

You are even harsher than me.

Thank you. By "me" which me do you refer to Mr. C or yourself? I am trying to move up to the top spot and I think my options of Stirling Moss being the best ever No. 2 F1 driver should work...

I think it is fair to try to compare drivers from other eras. Fans have always done that and always will.

I think I try to do that too, given what is availible to the drivers at the time. Stewart crashing into either Clarke or Hill would have results with the deaths of both of them so gaining Championships the way Senna, Prost and Schumacher did unfairly gives them an additional method of getting championships and the "greatness" based on the number of championships won. In Clarke's day, you had to race to win championships. In Senna's day, you had to make sure you opponent did not pass you, slight difference in words, but on public roads it is called attempted vechilcular manslaughter.

A "Schumacher crop" on the New Nurburgring circuit results with a a driver going down the grass. A Schmacher Crop at the old circuit means a driver falls off a cliff.

Yeah she's mentioned that. I've no idea if it's only allowed to have lessons from a qualified instructor or from parents but obviously you have to take the test with the right qualified people. Although you're free to have someone over 21 with at least 3 years experience be in the car with you if you want to get practise in.

Ah OK, I didn't know that. In Germany you can only take lesson from a qualified instructor who has a car with an extra set of pedals. And you need 12 special lessons. 3 night lessons, 4 on the motorway and 5 on 'country roads' additionally to actually learning to drive. We like to complicate things :)

  • lou26/05/2009 at 19:21

I was just wondering because Lou was talking about learning to drive from her parents.

i'm not learning to drive with my parents, not properly, mum just wanted to be the one who taught me how to turn the car on and like move... but that didn't work out too well. anyways, i'll be having actual lessons (where i actually learn things) from an official driving instructor once my exams are done. Then i'll be practising on the roads between lessons with my parents.i'd never dream of having actual lessons with anyone other than an official teacher though, cause there is a difference between knowing how to drive and teaching someone to drive.

See, this is the bizarre thing about lessons. You're not allowed to go on the motorway if you have a provisional license (for when you're taking driving lessons) so when you become a qualified driver and you pass, you have no experience on motorways!

I think I prefer the German system. It's probably more expensive because you have to pay the instructor for the practice you can do with your parents but safer. And I loved my Autobahn lessons. Usually the instructors have shiny new cars which go much faster then whatever you get to drive afterwards.

isn't there the pass plus scheme?

There is, but that's even more money :( It'd be worth it in the long term because it can bring down insurance premiums but when you've spent £800+ already...

There is, but that's even more money :( It'd be worth it in the long term because it can bring down insurance premiums but when you've spent £800+ already...

It's not that much more, and most councils will give you a grant towards it

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 19:32

See, this is the bizarre thing about lessons. You're not allowed to go on the motorway if you have a provisional license (for when you're taking driving lessons) so when you become a qualified driver and you pass, you have no experience on motorways!

Motorways are probably the easiest thing to drive on, if you can master dodgy A-road dual carriageways you'll be fine on a motorway

  • Lukeh26/05/2009 at 19:32

It's not that much more, and most councils will give you a grant towards it

    I've checked and ours don't.

Tbf they don't even have money for themselves because they're a lousy bunch o... ah it's not worth it.

i'm lucky that my parents are going to pay for everything for me, but yeah i can see how it can all mount up. My friend took the pass plus thing and she found it really useful... having said that she almost wrote off her poor little car today in a crash :(

If you have points or an accident its probably worth doing as your premiums will skyrocket, but otherwise it is very expensive

Ah, hope she's ok and everything :(

I'm still considering pass plus to be honest, if I pass in 3 weeks and depending on the next few months money wise we'll see but it's just a balance of whetehr I want to spend more alongside the advantage of lowering insurance in the future.

For you it's almost definitely worth it, male insurance for our age is incredibly high

  • Nick26/05/2009 at 19:37

Putting yourself on a 'classic' car for a year can also be a good way to bring down your premiums. A friend of mine was insured on his dads TR6 and his premium the following year for a clio was much lower than anyone elses

You can do advanced driving for free. The Institute of Advanced Motorists http://www.iam.org.uk/ have groups of volunteers all over the country who will teach you for the cost of a club membership. There are insurance companies that wil give you a discount if you pass that test.

Very true, it is. Now all I need is to become a boy racer listening to thumpingly loud rave music, lose respect for other road users and try and impress my own self esteem in a modded up glowing, hydraualic-pumping ford fiesta. ;)

wow, I suddenly feel dirty. *shudders*

You can also try the Rospa advanced driving association? which run a program like the IAM but instead of a pass/fail test their test has three levels of pass. The top grade is the hisghest civilian driving qualification in the UK.

Hi guys. Today was going well until I found out I have to pay charges on overuse of the internet. Yes I know, I'm a clot, a massive one at that. But my dad's an even bigger one for not telling me until this afternoon that unless I don't pay what I owe, we both get cut off the contract - thing is he never told me I had to pay anything until now when he's had the bill since the 4th!

My dad is *bleeping* useless sometimes...

NASA have done it again. After scheduling the shuttle mission round all the motor racing and then screwing up they have given us another one.

The next shuttle mission will launch at 7:17am EDT or 12:17pm UK. That is the same day Le Mans starts. So we get a space shuttle launch assuming NASA doesn't screw it up as the build up to a race with Franck in one of the starring roles.

Seems like it could be a good day.

I don't think the Aston can compete with the Audis or the Peugeots but it will probably be the next fastest car. The chances are that the best he can hope for would be third if we lose 4 of the Audis/Peugeots or they hit problems

I think the Le Mans people have chose the drivers' nationalities out of a hat. I noticed they had McNish down as being from Monaco then I noticed that Darren Turner is down as CHE (Cheshire?). They have Verstappen as German, Peter Kox as British, Minassian as British, Brabham as British, Neel Jani is CHE,

Ah, just seen that he did the 1999 race in a Paul Belmondo Viper.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/05/2009 at 22:11

Wow, that's less than i thought! Is it more failures or Incidents that thin out the field?

    Bit of both.

  • Steven Roy26/05/2009 at 22:13

You get a mixture of people crashing out and mechanical failures. Bear in mind they are doing the equivalent of a full F1 season in a day.

Christine tweeted about this earlier and I have to say I love it. Can't stop clicking on the play button. We need to find a way to get it into a show.

I guess if sidepodquiz is ever resurrected the trombone can be a wrong answer and the www.instantrimshot.com can be a correct answer.

    hey, how was your day?

Day was fine, have just spent the last 15mins compiling evidence in response to my cousin and the 20 people cc'd that Ericsson aren't actually giving away free laptops if I forward this email to all my friends

Was kinda fun actually in a 'don't be silly', patronising way! :D

    It was the dullest Monaco ever though {Comment #733}

Apart from the battle for the final point (which I found riveting, but I'm biased), it made Monaco 2007 look thrill-a-minute.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2009 at 14:28

    Yeah she’s mentioned that. I’ve no idea if it’s only allowed to have lessons from a qualified instructor or from parents but obviously you have to take the test with the right qualified people. {Comment #855}

In the UK, anyone may instruct a learner as long as they're over 21, have over 3 years of experience and are legally permitted to drive the car in question (insured, holding a current car licence etc.). However, an instructor can only advertise driving lesson services or take gainful employment instructing if they're qualified.

  • Alianora La Canta27/05/2009 at 14:29

    isn’t there the pass plus scheme? {Comment #869}

There is, but nobody's obliged to take it.
