For those of us that enjoyed a bank holiday yesterday, it's straight back into the working week now. Nevertheless, there is plenty going on this week for us to discuss, and here are some of the things we've been talking about recently:
- Mr C has been working hard on the new version of the Live Commenting, Live... Thing. There's a lot of detail on the introductory post, however I can preface it with this: it's awesome. Basically, you have each section in moveable boxes and you can decide what you want where. Check it out now.
- The Circuit Character Cup has begun, and you can still vote on the two initial matchups. New posts will go up each day at 9pm, meaning you have 24 hours to vote on each one. The first blog post sees Monza against Shanghai and Interlagos against Valencia. I know who my money's on for both matchups. Get voting now.
- Finally, Shaun has a great post on his site which talks about how hard it is to compare the greats to the current batch of F1 drivers, particularly Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. It's possibly a controversial topic, but the best ones are, aren't they?
That'll do it for now. Keep your thoughts coming on the new LCLT as it's early days yet and we're hoping to improve it as time goes on. As usual, I'll see you in the comments.
Ooooh... Fancy, this new LCLT. :D Very fancy.
Did a little hiccup for a bit when I tried to open it in FF3
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/new-lclt-pop-up-jpg
Hello Journeyer
Hmmm... That happens to me often on the Doohickey when I have too many tabs open. :D May just be that it eats up too much resources right now?
Hello Bassano. :)
Kathi, Lou and I have all had that. If you click the stop script button everything seems to work fine
So what's the script running then?
I hit continue and left it to work through it, came back after checking my mail and it was fine. Will see if it occurs next time
Thanks for the heads up
Probably that movable boxes thing
Had just opened Firefox and was only the 3rd tab for me
[I'm usually way into double figures]
That's what I normally do too. Hehe. Very, very nice, Mr C. Loving it. :D Will stick with LCLT for a day or three. ;)
So what's the latest today, anything new apart from Williams' submission?
No good asking me techical questions. The only thing I know id if I switch to a thread with no or few comments I don't get the script error. If there are a lot of comments I get it.
Silly little thing - but a bargain if you don't have it already.
TOCA Race Driver 3 for the PC. £5
Limited time only at www.gog.com - I've used them for a while - they'r trustworthy.
It's a 5gb download though with no DRM at all. :D
No news on anything that I have seen
No more yacht meetings then
Hmmm... Interesting. Must be the comments-loading script then...
I see Ed Gorman reads SPC too.
Talking about Lou's least favourite fashion accessory, Kimi's hat
http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2009/05/notes-from-monaco.html
Right, off to sleep now. I can afford a small lie-in tomorrow, I'm in from 11-8. Still gotta get up at 7 to get ready, then walk up to the train station, grab my train, then walk up to catch my bus to get to work.
Yup, up for 4 hours before I've even started. It's gonna be a loooooong day. Night!
Night Scott. :)
G'night Scott, maybe you need a bike ;)
I do have one, but I need to get it fixed. Must do that soon, actually. Will help shave some time off the commute!
night scott.
Lou, have just tweeted you re: Ed Gorman stealing your thoughts
hehe i thought i replied? maybe not... could be twihrl going funny again...
Am trying out a new Twitter client and may not have the check for replies intervals perfect yet
Ah, there it is :)
:)
why am i still awaakee!!!
this is a good film but its not THAT good
i've probably missed it, but what film are you watching?
its called 'two for the money' bbc1.
its why gambling dosent pay personified
ooh right..
random film, but its alright.
plus ive got the last 40 minutes of Silverstone LMS commentary to listen to aswell lol.
i think thats going to have to wait for tomorrow
i feel really awake tonight, and it's so muggy as well.. i really should go to sleep but i feel like i'll just be laying there awake :s
go to bed, and count sheep :P
nah, stretching works for me,lie down then start at the top and stretch every muscle down your body, hold it for like 20 seconds, by the time you get down and back up again you'll feel so tired you'll fall asleep.
oooor, try as hard as possible to keep your eyes open and stay awake, eventually you fall asleep through concentration...
can you tell im an insomniac? lol
Had some very light rain in London and it's cooled things down a little, maybe it's headed your way
I put something on the TV with the timer. Has to be something I've seen before with no loud noises. Old West Wing or Studio 60 has been great for me recently
we've had a storm already, but it's still really muggy :s
Ahh.. so this is where everyone was hiding, i have become too used to the doohicky, and forgot about a new thread at midnight...
last night i had the debrief, worked perfectly
Desktop Doohickey still roolz for me but it's nice to have options
haha lol a few years back i had really bad insomnia, normally i can't sleep now if something is praying on my mind or i feel like i should be doing something. tonight though i just feel a bit restless...
agreed
i'm the same with podcasts...
happens to the best of us, i've been put on melatonin, it's basically a relaxant thats already naturally in the body so you can't get addicted, seems to work quite well generally.
This is a very elegant little interface. Well done, Mr C.
I tried music but it just made me tap along or sing to itin my head.
Unless it's Sigur Ros or Mogwai
I'm ashamed to say....that i have a playlist that i sometimes use made up of 5 songs....all from HSM3....works a treat! It's never failed lol
Hey Dreary! Yup, I agree. :D It actually reminds me of the home page of... Windows Live. :P
When I was on 7 day shift patterns I used to take Nytol once every 3 weeks before my first early shift, eases you into drowsiness but can easily fight it if you want or need to. Recommend it only for short periods of sleeplessness though
Yeah, I'd keep that quiet if I were you ;)
Gaaaaaah, run! :D
:D
Random F1 point... Monnaco is really hard on the gearboxes, and since most of the drivers will be on the 2ns race for the gearboxes, we could see a lot of replacements coming in for Istanbul and Silverstone.. either that or retirements
hahah :D well it's good it works... i've not see a single HSM film i've not even heard one song all the way through and i intend it to stay that way :D
There's a name I've not seen before, hello Sir (or madam ;) )
Haha! :P
Hmmm... We might see a couple, but not a lot. Most gearboxes can easily do 3-4 race weekends now, even if one of them is Monaco. :D
NO WAY?!!? i'm a tiny bit impressed, i don't know anyone who hasn't seen atleast one of them, or been dragged to see, or been force-listened to some songs.
wow, just wow
Me too, never have, most likely never will
[keeps fingers crossed]
Club!
what i don't get, is that you can replace all the gears in the gearbox and not get a penalty, but when i've rebuilt gearbox's the only other thing apart from gears is bearings, and a whole lot of oil, so why would you replace the whole gearbox beacuse you're basically getting a penalty for changing the gearbox casing?
i know road car and f1 gearboxes are alot different, but the principles the same
gooo onnnn, you know you want too ;)
when you're not exposed to HSM and you didn't know what happened in Star Wars until we talked about it, that probably means you need to go to the cinemas more. :P
haha my friends that like HSM know that them forcing me to see a film would result in me not being very happy at all. they have tried to force me before but i can be pretty stubborn...
Hmmmm, not really
I guess they have to replace it after an impact, like hamiltons, but what about the clutch components, i know nothing of engineering, but are they included?
i think you'd like it, atleast no loathe it. aslong as you accept that it's horribly cheeeeseeeey then all is good
Very good question. Not sure why this is the case, but I suspect they're only allowed to change 1 or 2 gears at any given time. If you need to change any more gears, you'd have to replace the whole thing instead...
You cant compare HSM to Star Wars!!!
Easier to change a gearbox assembly in a hurry during a session but could be hydraulic leak, cracked casing from impact. Many things
ooh dont know, wouldnt have thought so.
on the crash front, gearbox's are part of the rearcrash structure, the whole rear suspension is mounted off them, so you could have a point there
we don't have a clutch pedal, but is there an electronic equivalent? i wouldn't think it's included, but i could be wrong...
S'all cool runnings to me ;)
haha when i was younger i didn't go to the cinema much so didn't see star wars... and HSM really isn't my type of film at all. I have to be in the right mood for cheesy american films.... sometimes my friends force me to see some of the really badly made rom coms, but they know that they aren't my favourite genre of film.
They're both pop culture phenomena that everyone's watched! A fair comparison. :D
Hahaha! :P
rom coms, Lou? You mean chick flicks. :P
But Star Wars and Cool Runnings is OK?
Yes... Both highly quotable..manly films
the man has a point
horribly cheesy songs and people jumping and dancing around a school is not my kinda film sadly... i'd prefer to watch a film like the painist or cool runnings :P
*pianist
Manly films... Rambo is a manly film. :P
the painist! did he hurt the pianist? :P
I really dislike musicals, was so peeved when I found out Sweeney Todd was a Tim Burton musical. Stop singing and get on with the film puh-leeease
Son of Rambow is much better
Not a fan of Mamma Mia, Hairspray, or Footloose then?
Have heard Mamma Mia is so bad it's good, just not for the right reasons
wait wait wait, you won't watch high school kids singing/dancing, but you will watch 4 guys from jamaica in lycra in a bobsleigh...
hmm
haha i'm not the average girl who likes watching cheesy romantic comedies all the time. they get boring and very predictable. lol they are alright, but as i say i'd rather watch a better film. :P
cheers dreary, cheers all.
it's just struggling with squeezing the comments in a box that is not only resizable and scrollable, but also movable.
should be fine on a new daily thread, no? when there's just a few comments it's fine. 500+ and i'm seeing issues.
Hahaha! It's cheesiness at its best. :D
:D
wow, you really aren't the average girl lol
But I see Passion, I see Pride, I see...
You would be surprised at how some of us can compare films
Myself going to sleep before i start saying...
"feel the rhythm
feel the rhym
give it up its bobsleigh time
COOL RUNNINGS"
in my sleep....
There is still a clutch mechanism
:D
haha i got a little upset with my friends around my birthday last year, cause what i really wanted to go was go and see the film - the boy in the stripped pyjamas but none of them wanted to because it would be too sad... so i had to go see a rom com instead. lol i got my own back by waking some of them up when i watched the race though haha
Have found out that the Martini girl at Portier is called Jessiqa Pace
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/martini-girl-monaco-jpg
hahaha :) lol cool runnings isn't the same kinda cheesy.
Nothing surprises me at SPC anymore :)
Apparently she was at the race and worried that she might be the cause of an accident!
didn't DC say that the drivers asked for that advert to be taken down as it was too distracting... or was that a joke he made?
Can't remember anyone going off there since Schuey stuffed it into the wall a few years back
:D :D :D
Heidfeld slammed into the wall just under the ad in 2001. I think he's the most recent one. :D
Apparently it was true, cant remember where i read about it
Jake questioned that and he said it was serious
I can see it being true
Apparently, Lisa Dennis was at the paddock on Sunday. Interesting.
that picture scares me a little... Lukeh is too good in photoshop... :P
BBC Quali, beginning with Jake and DC
Too much time on his hands, he should go into graphic design
He has the skillz
he has waaaaaay too much time on hands though :P
I'm reading a very interesting document of a study of why men don't go into a primary teaching.
Can anyone name the primary (no pun intended) reason?
haha he certainly does, he'd be great in graphic design though you're right.
Strange
When I refresh the new lclt (for the new daily thread) the order of the boxes change :(
I guess this is a night owls issue only
There was an article somewhere too, where she said she was flattered but worried she could be the cause of an accident
you've lost me?
Just tried it and mine does the same.
I don't think the LCLT is able to save your layout yet.
is that the same issue with it not remembering the order once you come back to it another day MrC?
Hmmm... Interesting, but I have no idea. :)
I re-ordered the boxes, putting everything bar the posting section at the bottom. Refreshed to get the new daily thread in the drop down and the original order reappeared.
Just an observation
If you shuffle the boxes then later press F5 they go back to their original positions
oh right. yeah we highlighted that here:
"At present, the LCLT cannot remember your layout when you navigate away."
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/05/25/now-about-those-movable-boxes/
Dont tell me you've joined Joe under the sofa!
I didn't realise Bono was at Monaco and why is he wearing that silly wig?
:D
Did he ever reappear?
that would make recording the podcast with Joe easier...
Must be getting crowded under there
yup, exactly that. there are so many possible variables...
- box position
- one pane or two panes
- scroll bar position
- new comments on or off
- post selected
- etc, etc.
it's a huge amount to snapshot every change and recall it on the fly, so for the moment we haven't even tried.
awww apparently Jenson's mum is really sweet! :D i like that she always wears a jenson badge too :)
OK. Not a problem if everyone understands
I hadn't finished reading the instructions
[Typical engineer]
do you think he's wearing a badge with jenson's name on to confuse people?
Looking at your list, just remembering the first two would be perfect for me. The others just cause unneccessary complexity.
That said, take your time. :D
:)
nope!
hadn't thought of that.
Maybe it is so she remembers who she is supporting or in case she gets drunk people know who to return her too
My other thought was, isn't Jessica's conjoined twin a lot older than her?
:D
interesting point. will have a think.
No Aside until Turkey, then? Would've loved to hear what he thought of the whole FOTA malarkey. It'll probably be done by the time we're in Turkey...
:D
we might be able to do something next weekend. will keep you posted.
I actually might implode if i don't sleep.....
so....
It's goodnight from me!
Yay! Right after the deadline! That'll be VERY interesting. ;)
Night, Jon. :)
night Jon!
Interesting...
night!
Fake seb buemi's new profle pic still makes me smile
Night Jon
night jon. am off too (i was asleep, but woke up having a nightmare about people waving spc banners at silverstone - i may need to get outside more).
see ya.
That's not a nightmare! That's a wonderful dream!
Folks going to Silverstone, make it happen! :D
aww i think it's nice she was able to be there for jenson yesterday on the grid and stuff cause last year we was going to be but had a bad back or something and had to watch the tv coverage from her room.... wow... i scared myself with that knowledge...
i think you almost certainly need sleeep
G'night Mr C
Or not if it becomes true :)
why is that a nightmare? i had a strange dream that there was a grand prix at my school last night... but i like your dream better! :D
It'll be up to us then. :D
It could be worse. It could have been fake SPC banners. That would be really worrying
Night me C, hope you can find a way out from under the sofa
Hahaha!
:D
I would love to see fake driver banners at silverstone, might confuse some people...
I've not had any F1 dreams yet, fake or otherwise :)
Am I the Ant Davidson of SPC, can't get a race seat? :D
Or fake driver's mums
i think they were all misspelt sideposcast and the autosport were laughing about it in the grapevine column.
thanks. sweet dream's n'all!
sidepostcast?
f1 dreams always turn out to be so strange for me, i have a reoccurring one that is just me walking down the pitlane at silverstone seeing all the teams, and having chats with race engineers and random people, and taking the odd picture. it's really strange. and then before i know it i'm having a cup of tea in the paddock in the sun... then i wake up. it's really odd.
MWM shoutout. :D
awww :D at least the commentators would be able to pronounce it ;) night Mr C
if it keeps repeating, it's usually a sign that it'll happen for real in the future.
I have never had a racing dream. I feel deprived
I've had the odd dream from time to time. But it's only happened to me twice or thrice.
Maybe Honda used all the power up ;)
if that ever happens in the future i will actually die of happiness.
Nah, they just pulled the plug. :D
It's up to you, really, if it will happen or not. :)
:D
i wouldn't know where to start to try and make that happen...
The power of dreams has no battery back-up?
Honda took it with them when they left. ;)
ahah :D
ok, i think it's about time i got some sleep... or at least tried to. night all x
indeed. it's gotten quiet here already. night lou.
i'll be off too. later everyone. :D
I heard a nice little story today
Apparently at the McLaren HQ they have electric pump soap dispensers in all the bathrooms. However, they always squirted out a little bit of soap when you removed your hand and left a little mess on the sink
Ron didn't like this so had them re-engineered to automatically pump when you put your hand beneath them but then suck back a little when your hand was removed
May not be true but of Ron, I could believe it :D
Night Lou & Journeyer
That. is. COOL. :D Hahaha!
But they'd save a lot of money if they just used manual dispensers. :P
I won't be heading to bed, it's still nice and sunny here. Unless you are?
No, I'll be around for a bit dipping in and out
Just not High Tech enough for Ron, he can probably calculate how much soap per bathroom is being used to see who is the cleanest
I know a little bit about how dispensers are designed and things like the nozzles on shaving foam cans have features designed into them in the latest generation to stop drops forming on them and dripping. I would not be surprised if Ron had done what has been said.
Just playing around with different formats for the new lclt, there could be something in this ya know. Quite versatile
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/new-lclt-format-ideas-jpg
The versatility of this thing is amazing. :D Doohickey might have to be second-best in the meantime (unless you're on a mobile).
Hey anyone still awake?
I am
Same here, but I'm in differnt time zone, So what 's the topic?
One fake twitter user that I know one or two people here will be interested in following
http://twitter.com/fakebhartley
Not much of anything seems to have happened today. Hoping for a lot more news in the morning.
What is the deal with the "Fake twitter" thing. I get alot less info than you guys in Europe, so help me
I think it all started with Fake Steve Jobs. Now everyonw wants to be a "fake" in every field
I have only talked to one F1 driver ever, on-line or otherwise, Scott Speed. Oh wait, I was on a flight with Takumo Sato after his 6th place in Montreal. So I won't hang around online to talk to someone I don't know who they are
I have only been using twitter for a week so I am only just starting to find out about it. Basically there are fans who have acounts as fake drivers and they respond to real events. Tonight it got a bit weirder than normal when fake Seb Buemi's mother showed up and started an argument with fake Piquet jr.
Some of the fakes are really good and really entertaining. Best thing is to follow a few and see if you enjoy it or not. I am sure as many folk will hate it as enjoy it.
You won't see me defending twitter, I think it's a waste of time. Apart from the dubious entertainment value, I haven't seen much of a reason for it.
I will only claim face to face as contact. By the way, when I met Scott Speed (hopefully next years USF1 driver) I talked to his Mom for a while
Anyway it is way past my bed time so I am going to disappear as well.
See you all later.
See ya steven
Sleep tight Steven
A quick question to whoevers still here. Is there lots of gambling in Europe? I will be playing blackjack tommorrow
Can't tell you, I'm in Australia. Anyway, back to work for me, catch you all later.
the reason for twitter is pure and simple. It got me into a mclaren event that i otherwise wouldn have known about let alone been on the guest list for. In other news i just put $10 on roger to win the french open. There i go betting with my heart not my head again.
Sorry, I was listening to Adam Hill. How good of an event?
just a pr event but i got to see heikki attempt to hold a cricket bat and the day rates as one of my favourite days ever. Looking at my photos and videos always makes me very thankful i got the chance.
I still look at my pictures and video from Montreal, it was a great time. I undertand completely.
Hitting the rack. See you all later
Hey everyone. LCLT sleeps too! :D
Later, Joe. :)
Loving the new LCLT :)
Morning everyone :)
Preferring it over doohickey? :P
Morning, Alex!
Oooh not sure yet... I'll have to wait and see.
I have always felt they have very different functions and haven't ever really played favourites.
So I doohicky for most of the time when multiple threads are being used and live comment for the races and live events (debrief / panel / parade etc).
So I don't know if that will change but it could do I guess.
Yeah, just about makes sense. And doohickey is for the mobile too.
That said, if people start using LCLT more often, it might allow for cleaner threads and conversations. :)
Ahhh... One good thing about my work laptop (that doesn't allow anything more than IE6) - it comes with RealPlayer.
Tried using it for iPlayer for the first time. I miss Radio 1. :D
Bono baby? Riiiight...
Indeed. Steven revelead that he has both the doohickey and LCLT open when catching up. And the Doohickey works well on the iPhone...
Ahh yes that was on Gareth Jones on Speed a few weeks ago. Sounds like an urban legend but could be true!
VERY well. :D
I didn't know you can make urban legends out of electric pump soap dispensers. :P
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/5374459/Why-Prince-Albert-is-in-pole-position.html
A rather interesting article about Prince Albert of Monaco. Sounds like a decent chap!
I hadn't realised that Vijay Mallya is also a Doctor. People always refer to Dr Mario Theissen but I haven't really seen them refer to Dr Vijay Mallya.
Interesting.
Really? I guess Dr Mallya wasn't that fond of Dr Kolles. :P
Maybe Vijay's doctorship is a PhD?
But so is Mario's. Theissen has two doctorates one in Mechanical Engineering and one in Engineering.
Ah perhaps it is because Mallya's is honorary.
He has an actual bachelor of commerce degree from the university of Calcutta. And an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from California Southern University, Santa Ana. (According to Forbes).
Can't fall asleep to them - get too engrossed. :D
Both excellent series. Shame Studio 60 was canned after 1 series though.
I've found that audio books are best for me. Currently going through the entire Terry Pratchett catalogue of books.
Still only get a couple of hours a night though.
The 'In Our Time' Podcast ALWAYS sends me to sleep - so dry and boring!
When I take my morning nap on the train I do it to Buzz Out Loud as I always fall asleep after the news (the best bit anyway!)
I wouldn't be able to either...
NASCAR can put you to sleep. Sure put me to sleep last night. :D
Yeah so I hear. FOUR HOURS OF WAITING!
That's why you should only watch highlights of it!
i missed a west wing discussion? watched all 7 series in the last 6 months - the only effort I've ever made to be completely stupid with DVDs. I won't be doing anything like that again in a hurry... love the show but i was too obsessed to always get to the next episode...
how many cautions for a drop of rain? :) Morning all :)
I never got into that show... they talked waay too fast for me...
Morning Scott. :D Way too many cautions, Scott. Way too many...
I never saw any of it when it was being shown on TV - then I bought the DVD set. Watched all 7 series, pretty much back to back in a matter of weeks.
Loved it.
there was a great parody I saw once. I think it was the first series parody.
that good huh? :)
Toby is spot on in that. :D
"you won't understand any of it, but you'll sense important things are happening". I loved that show. We had about 2 years without it in Oz due to it not being watched so the network kept shifting timeslots and eventually dumped it until it was picked up years later by a new network. I spoke to the programming department of the original TV station and they (unofficially) said people would rather (I forget the phrase exactly) dumb **** than something intelligent.
I recently went through the same thing. It's an amazing show... It really is.
Hey Alex, was it you requesting summer songs yesterday for the garden. I heard a great classic last night when I was dealing with the heat. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Summertime. Slow, but ooh so smoooooth.
Yeah I've started doing that this year. works well. Moby Dick for me. its long....figure It'll take me a few months.
Christine's also recorded a bunch of audio books, right? Has anyone listened to them?
Ahh the networks ... shift the timeslot and then drop it because no one was watching the programme - because of confusion with the timeslot probably!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/brawngp/5383667/Jenson-Button-in-pole-position-to-win-F1-world-championship.html
Oooh DC's having a pop at Mansell as well:
Some countries, like Italy, allow people to call themselves Dr for a Bachelor degree. honorary degrees (in my humble opinion) devalue the real ones that people earn.
I have enough time issues with getting through all the podcasts.
It didn't help - which is why I kept ringing the tv station. i wasn't an angry person, i just had no idea when my favourite show would be on tv.
Hehehe... How appropriate, I'm currently watching the 1985 European GP on JTV. :D
I'm curious as to how Mansell was adored while he was in F1 and is scorned upon now - how the heck will Lewis cope when his career ends?
By moving to commentating on ITV and earning the wrath of people like us with JL, JA etc...
Scorned might be a strong word. :) It's more like a mixed reaction now...
Just two full ones and a bunch of random chapters of others.
"Just two full ones"...is it as massive a job as I think it is?
Yup.
Maybe. But over the last few years there has been a lot of hate for the 'tache-meister...
Miley Cyrus on Radio 2?! What the heck?!
Who hasn't had a tache for years now... :D
I suspect the two are connected ... lost the 'tache, lost that lovin' feeling!
Hmmm... You may be onto something there...
Great song :)
FR Update: Vettel's value only dropped this morning. Now there's a delayed reaction - and I hate it. I bought back Vettel already, thinking his price had bottomed out. I didn't factor in the bank holiday... *sighs* Oh well.
I'm SO not playing the stock market with FR :(
Why the sad face? It's just something I do to amuse myself, and hope to earn a couple of hundred Ks in the process. :)
Ah it's just too much effort. What would be really funny if the FR guy made a credit crunch on driver trading...
:D I don't think the concept of credit even exists in FR! :P
Maybe we should all lend our money to Kathi ;)
Then we can force her to bankruptcy! Mwahahahaha! :D
I've been contemplating the discipline it must take. It's an effort to read these books but to read them clearly and perfectly but be ... well...yikes. Bravo!
I still don't think I've made one change yet. It slipped off my priority list...
:) as long as Kathi is not lending money to herself, the economy should be okay
And then default on payments and claim all her FR assets. Win!
Same here - I would have to sell KUB and SUT to buy a better driver but at the moment, that driver would not score more points than KUB and SUT combnied. So I stick with what i have for a good spread!
For me, the reading is the easy bit. I dislike having to go back and listen to myself as I edit, but it's all good fun.
stop giving autosport some ideas...
Is that your actual job, Christine? Or is that just a hobby?
Reading audiobooks? Ha, I'm not good enough for that. Just a hobby :)
I have decided I hate the sound of my own voice :( I only listen back on the panels becuase the others make me laugh so much!
In my small time radio career, I've put together a few prepackaged pieces and the relistening to something you've spent lots of time on is annoying.
i was once listening to an audio tour somewhere in france and they forgot to go back, otherwise "let's do this again" followed by a partial reread would never have made it to the recording.
I get the feeling everyone hates the sound of their own voice.
Me too. :)
It's just ... weird ... I can't describe the feeling - like I shouldn't be listening to myself and why do I say things the way I do?
Wait till they release a book on Franck!
The way you sound to yourself is different from the way you sound to other people. :) That's why it's weird.
not me. that's why I talk so much :)
Hey! I talk a lot too! :P
morning.
Morning, Lukeh. :)
I just realised why there weren't many other podcasts released yesterday - most of mine are from the UK and they were on holiday...
Debrief got released earlier BECAUSE of the holiday. :D
Yeah I know - but for example no FIF1, Williams or Soccernet podcasts today!
Very good points there! Do they edit FIF1 and Williams on the Monday after the race, even if it's recorded on Sunday?
Don't know - but over the past few weeks I seem to remember listening to them on a Tuesday...
It was also Memorial Day in the US, wasn't it?
Not that I'd notice. Hehe. :D
Yep, it was. I think Gavin and I were the only people who were at the office. :D
True - and therefore no BOL or 404! Arrgh! All my schedules are disrupted!
But I had Thursday and Friday off. Next Week I have Monday and Friday off. I am determined to launch the blog before Turkey!
You lucky you. :P No holidays for me until 12th June. :(
Aww. That is one benefit to being hideously behind on all my podcasts. It makes no difference!
stupid FOM on youtube, why isn't breaking copyright law easy
did your PW-Rubens video get taken down?
sure did
FOM have zero concept of "fair use" eh?
heh I guess its fair enough, but I know as an F1 fan I like to see clips from other countries and it seems silly they come down on them so hard when they don't even show these things on TV in other places anyway.
And the fact that the BBC are geo-locked on all of their clips too ... other sports are not half as restrictive!
Well the BBC is slightly different as it has licence payers to think of.
But what about the F1 website? I can watch loads of news and sports clips on the rest of the BBC pages but not a single F1 clip can be accessed outside the UK?
I accept the argument about why I can't access the iPlayer, but short clips on the website?
In that case it must be part of the deal they've done with Bernie.
is this from the US? If yes, it's on SPEED, which is a cable channel you pay for. that may explain why this can't fall under fair use.
nope its from ONE HD, the Australian broadcaster.
Yeah I think so too :( The silly thing is, there are so many ways around it that they may as well not bother restricting it in the first place. One day FOM will wake upo and provide a web streaming service - and make TONS of money!
Fair enough, but SPEED or whoever are not going to lose revenue from a short clip which they may never broadcast again anyway - and both the channel and F1 get free promotion from the clip too!
It does seem odd that Bernie wouldn't have dollar signs glinting in his eyes given how many people will pay for a decent online sports feed.
It's the same with all old media, though, they can only see the piracy, but mostly people pirate because they haven't got any other access. Eventually, they'll all come round, and Bernie will be the last to do so.
as long as TV ratings remain high (which they are), Bernie won't come round to it. it'll have to be up to his successor (whoever that is) to introduce it.
Bernie will never step down, even as a ghost he will haunt F1's paddocks :P
It's the mp3 argument all over again isn't it? In a few years the TV companies will be making most of their money from Net streaming like mp3's are to iTunes now. We even have a cable box that just transmits TV via an Internet link in Denmark...
Absolutely. The music industry has already started the transition, although they've still got a way to go yet. The movie and TV companies are a way behind, but they'll get there eventually.
Hi Morning All!!
I'm well up for some Tremanying today, what's the number? There's a team massively overdue a Tremanying!!
Also does anyone else not actually like Brawn GP? Is that allowed?
Hey RCC!
Apparently, there are people who are starting not to like them, with their current domination of F1. I think some of them hated it from the start, but are just going public with it now. It shouldn't be allowed, but what can ya do?
0121 28 TRACK - that's 0121 28 87225.
Hehehe. I don't think it is allowed actually... well, you'll face the wrath of several commentors anyway :)
I find myself very conflicted because at the end of Monaco I was happy that Jenson won it, but disappointed that it was so easy for them.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion :)
No matter how wrong it may be *runs away*
I got a little bored after win number 3 so win number 5 is trying my patience. I definitely don't dislike Brawn as such, I just like lots of winners in a season.
It isn't much effort at all.
Hehe.
I'm sad to say I'm one of the ones that doesn't like them!
Somethings wrong when they do 1 test and then dominate all year. It's like at school when you spend all week preparing for a test then some smary geek does not revision at all and still gets higher grades. I'm stuck between being patriotic and yet not actually liking Button at all.
I guess you wanted to see someone really challenge Jenson, but no one could touch him, really. You'll have to blame Ross Brawn for that. :D
Thank you for the shout out on F1 debreif Mr C :-)
Im not sure if my points haul on fantasy racers was anything special or not, I know Im not going to overhaul Kathy but I might help us beat Autosport :-)
Yup. I think I said that in the show.
right check tonight lol
Yay!
Hello, Eurogamer have a hand-on preview up of F1 2009...
Did you? *remembers Debrief* oh yeah, you did! :D
When I was at school, that was me. And its true, people hated it.
If it was an established team winning 5 out of 6 I would be finding this season repetitive by now (unless it was Williams) but with it being Brawn GP Im just really happy for all of them, it is really nice to see them giving a different member of the team going to the podium after each win.
I hear this a lot, but I don't view them as a "new team" as such. I know their last minute rescue was great, but to me they're pretty much still Honda.
So you're a geek, then? :D
But seriously, let's remember that many teams did 2009 regs testing in 2008. I'm pretty certain Honda did this (at Ross' insistence) at least a couple of times. And even then, Brawn ran at 3 tests before Melbourne this year...
yeah ditto, I could never revise, much prefer exams over coursework etc.
I wanna see them challenged (Brawn) and not feel like my Brit GP 09 ticket is an expensive waste to watch 2 white cars trundle round for 60 laps
If anyone wants a read on the Wii F1 2009 game, and a few new screenshots, check this out:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/f1-2009-hands-on
It's a good detailed read into what to expect. It doesn't look the most beautiful game to look at al all to be honest but they're accomadating for both casual fans wanting a quick play and hardcore fans wanting the full experience (strategy, fuel, full weekend, etc) which is good for the Wii :)
I was at school, then I went to Uni where no one was making sure I actually went to class and it all went pear shaped :D
For me, this is VERY different. Honda's management style is very different to Ross, so that in turn creates a different culture within the team. Sure, they may have the same resources, but it's how they're used and how they work together that make it so different.
Hehehe. Got burned out by excessive geekiness, then? :P
you can't not revise and still get an A for a subject when you never went to the lectures and had no knowledge of the subject in the first place :D
tsk tsk tsk. :P Where did you hie off to? :P
Oh yeah I don't view them as ''new'' as such, but they are new to winning grands prix. I probably will become bored of it though but not before Silverstone hopefully!
3 weeks and 4 days *giddy*
I stayed in bed. Not a morning person unless I have to be:D I also often skipped lectures to go to work instead because overtime $$ are my friend :D
My one question is - does it have lots of driving aids that basically means you could be driving on train tracks? Cos that's the only way I make it round a single lap.
It apparently has 15 different driver aids, so you have nothing to worry about :P
15?! The last F1 game only had... 5, I think.
Phew :)
I'm not sure what they could be..
Transmission
Car damage
Difficulty
AI difficulty
Steering assist
Braking Assist
Driving Line indicator
Braking zones indicator
Thats all I can think of... so yeah, 15 is quite the assistance!
I heart being able to see the racing line, I am so rubbish at finding them. As long as I have that, I'm OK.
My favourite is the F1 game we had on... PS2 I think, which had a nice green line all the way round the track. If you went off it too much, it just bumped you back on. Switched on the braking aids too and all I had to do was keep my finger on the accelerator.
Completely pointless :)
On the last F1 game was it F1 2006? if you went off the track your car would slow down for upto 14 seconds as a penalty!
Still anger's me to this day that Yuji Ide was robbed of winning the Italian GP by going wide on exit of Ascari chicane! :-(
That's brilliantly lazy! :P
Although this is the Wii... you may have to rely on turning the remote about now as well as pressing a button!
That's odd... they usually just punish you for cutting the chicane, not running wide on exit...
That was one of the worst things about the Sony games, if you cut corners you wouldn't get warnings, or a drive through or anything, it'd just chuck you in 2nd gear for the time you said, usually at least 8 seconds. Horribly annoying.
Good point. I guess it was trickier to program in calling for a drive-through, then getting black-flagged if you don't follow it...
Hehehe. For some reason I don't have the co-ordination on driving games to steer, change gear and brake and all that.
Something like Tomb Raider is easy. Run, jump, grab, roll, shoot, all fine. Steering? Much too hard.
When that occured though, I used to tell myself that I pressed with the rev limiter! just to diffuse my anger!
Just would've been more sensible to be given 3 strikes or something though me thinks, like what we saw with massa at the weekend. So annoying to fight your way through the field, take a corner wrong on accident then be stuck for 15 seconds with loads of cars flying past and nothing you can do because of the way they set it up :(
Pressing the rev limiter? Is your name Heikki? ;)
It's a matter of knowing what it will and won't allow. It was tricky at the start, but once I figured it out, I rarely got penalized.
You have to look at it from the 'He bloody well deserves it' perspective ;)
:)
But at the same time, any fan would want to see an exciting race. Which is why I understand Christine's perspective. :)
It is when I should be working !
Driving lesson time, blowtorch at the ready, see you guys in a bit :P
You sound like my Uncle now... and that ain't good :(
good luck!
Good luck Lukeh!
Disagree. If it were still Honda they wouldn't be half as innovative and I doubt they would be able to win races. Small team with big money - the best of both worlds innit?
Wii Racing games suck. Avoid.
BMW to introduce DDD in Turkey.
http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2009/05/26/bmw-sauber-to-introduce-multi-level-diffuser-in-turkey/
Silverstone is early this year isn't it?
A good rule of thumb is to approach the corner from the outside line, turning in and hitting the apex mid corner and aiming for the outside of the corner on the exit. Takes some practice and you end up feeling your way through...
it couldn't hurt could it? I'm waiting for the TDD and the QDD....
I look at Brawn and think 'this is what Honda could have been without the japanese upper management' I know Honda have a decent motor racing history but they were '' mal misorganised'' when it came to actually running a works F1 team, I would love to see Brawn win at Suzuka.
That's a bloody good assessment I reckon!
*blushes*
Im getting star struck again! it's the ACTUAL Gavin Brown off the podcast!
Suzuka has fast corners - not sure if they can hold off the Red Bulls here. Then again, we don't know the rate of development by then. :D
Gavin! You're famous now! :D
I guess we'll find out after Turkey on that one. Looks like it's going to be a proper litmus test for Red Bull and BMW with their super-duper-double-deck-diffuser-designs!
Does this mean someone will make a fake twitter account in my name? ;)
Along with the ACTUAL everyone else in here that's been on the podcast? ;)
Speaking of which, you should be on a panel next season - they're loads of fun!
June 21st I beleive is race day, is sidepodcast to be present at Silverstone?
:D
Agreed! :) This is a community as much as it as a podcast site. :D
How can we say we don't like them without sounding like an uncle! Usually it's not enough to just say you don't like them!
Hosting is fun because you get to make people do stupid things :D
Apparently not but some people will be attending...
Now here's an example of someone who really dived in - Amy only became active 2 months ago! :D
Ah no it's just what you said is remarkably similar to what he said... and it was very much a case of he didn't like Brawn winning because they were too new and the 'proper teams' were disadvantaged in some way...
Disadvantaged? They were just too slow to take advantage of the new rules.
Id definately be interested in being on a panel, it really does come across that you are all having fun and it is fun to listen to aswell.
Everyone else is great on the panel too but for some reason you and Steven Roy are quite distinctive, you seem to be the regulars that is perhaps why.
Sadly not this year. As Gavin said, there are some Sidepodpeeps going though, and perhaps an unofficial meetup will occur.
And I'm saying that as a Ferrari fan...
I don't think anyone hates them, and i think everyone acknowleges that it's one amazing thing they've done with that car. but i think lots of people want to see other people win, and are getting bored of the same car winning each race.
They aren't new though are they! Only had a whole year and 3 wind tunnels working all through 2008
Raikkonen's form delights Ferrari boss
Last sentence is a big deal:
Ferrari just threw another hand-crafted spanner into the works!
Go to F1F or any other F1 forum, and you'll see more than a few Brawn haters - and they're the annoying type, more often than not. Sad but true.
Explain?
Yeah well I totally disagreed with him - he actually admitted he only cares if Ferrari wins :(
Which is why I think F1 fans may be whinging a bit. We were sad for Jenson last year, now we're happy, now we're bored of him winning? Confused over here!
I'm a Ferrari fan, but they were too slow to take advantage. They may have also been deceived by how well they fared in preseason testing, where many thought they were the only ones close to the Brawns...
Do they all refer to the same group of people/fans? Are those happy people bored now? Were these bored people ever happy? I think we can't generalize in this case.
I wanted to see Jenson win again, but he was just one name on my long list of 'people I want to see win soon'
A lot of journos are certain that Kimi is leaving at the end of the year and Alonso is taking his place. The weird thing is, you get the impression the team aren't happy with his performance and then Luca sings his praises? Ferrari are sending mixed messages this year...
No, not bored of him winning, it's great, but after all the hype of these new regs that were going to make overtaking better, 1 driver has won 5 races, and it dosent matter who that driver is, it could be massa for all i care, but after a while it just gets a bit boring
I was optimistic that Williams would be competitive after seeing their pre season times, it turns out they were doing free practice simulations :-(
This will make Christine happy. ;)
Unnamed Energy Drink Cola News: Said cola has been banned in some parts of Germany...
But you still watch F1 if they don't win, right?
It's because nothing is set in stone yet. As long as Kimi meets the targets, he can stay. If he doesn't, he'll be sent off. But right now, Alonso may or may not be in a red car in 2010.
I'm still here, right? ;)
Exactly, it's been great to see him win, but i also want to see Heikki, Rubens, Vettel, Webber, Alonso, Glock, Kubica, Heidfeld etc win too.
No need for me to buy an autograph book then :)
You may be right there. Funnily enough, I'm not bored yet but that may change if this carries on. I have doubts that Red Bull, Mclaren or Ferrari will not be in a position to win at some point though...
Jenson and Seb were both on my list, but there are 8 names still on the "i want to win in 2009" list
Heikki, Kimi, Nick, Fernando, Jarno, Timo, Mark and Rubens.
You're running out of races boys!
Verstappen's doing a good job in the Aston Martin LMP1 car.
He's wrecked it.
'Zat iz becoz ze taste iz like old spulewasser, ja?
Brawn's streak may end in Turkey - the track should favor Red Bull, and Massa's won the last 3 races there.
Exactly.
:D
Sadly their form for the last few years :(
It's hard to be Brawn negative without being labelled as bitter/jealous/fanboy etc
Tests showed it contained cocaine. :D
Watch the sales in the rest of europe rocket
haha ,thats hilarious
Kathi's going to kill me for that - Sorry!
It just shows the Germans have impeccable taste!
Well, you can say that it's getting boring because we have yet to see other winners. But when people say they hate Brawn because they keep on winning, that does strike me to be coming from a bitter mouth...
Wow, really?
Get ready to be tugged by the ear. :P
Sounds right, most people just want to see a mixed F1, where there are other winners, or atleast 2 main winners like last year.
Yup.
Linky
That I can defo see, is it not enough though to just not like them wihtout needing a reason?
Spuelwasser and we don't say 'ja' at the end but 'oder'
also: *clips you round the ear*
:D
I don't like Williams and I don't even know why :D
If you mean not like as in "don't care", sure. If you mean not like as in "hate", there has to be a reason. :P
:P
Cheers Kathi. I just had a funny picture of a German bureaucrat from the health department tasting the stuff and spitting it out across the room!
<
Didn't think of it like that, I obviously can't speak for everyone but I just generally dislike them, along with an increasingly annoying Bourdais (I can't stand his whining anymore)
Hmmm... Alright. So no specific reason, then?
I know this woman who feels the same... ;)
Constant disappointment perhaps? I could go on and on about how lame they are when it actually comes to racing pace. Why make themselves look stupid by posting fastest practices times constantly then sweet F A in the race?!
I just received this: http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/26/usf1-boss-peter-windsor-confirms-deal-for-cosworth-engines-in-20/#comments
The source is F1-Live via a GMM story. What's the story? :D
*true story?
Strictly speaking I dislike Button, always have, I aint got no beef with the team at all. Button has just annoyed me through his career. It'd take me hours to explain
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/05/26/on-the-road/
Apparently the crowd was up to 40% down! Man, that's a big hit!
and 70% for VIP hospitality? That is huge
Especially when this event makes Monaco!
I think a large part of those numbers are because these people are sent by sponsors. That's one of the first things that get cut in belt-tightening times. Those numbers will go up again once the recession ends.
Wow. This really isn't Ron's house anymore.
McLaren feels [it is] 'peacemaker' in FIA row
yeah thats what happened here, BMW I think it was normally sends like 1500 people and this year they had 0. It's nice to know the recession can affect a place like Monaco as much as it can Melbourne :D
that said, i fear what crowds we'll see in Singapore... :(
Might be a cheap option
Back from driving :) that went too well, suspiciously well, didn't make one error and my instructor said I had become far more confident in my ability and calmness on the road, woo!!
3 now till the big test...
It is in terms of planes. I hope the ticketers and the hoteliers follow suit, though.
You can do it, Lukeh! :D
You sound like Jenson
what can I say, Brawn have inspired my driving... :P
Should be easy at the front then!
3 more until you pass :)
you wont be saying that when jenson and rubens punt each other off in turkey :P
what i don’t get, is that you can replace all the gears in the gearbox and not get a penalty, but when i’ve rebuilt gearbox’s the only other thing apart from gears is bearings, and a whole lot of oil, so why would you replace the whole gearbox beacuse you’re basically getting a penalty for changing the gearbox casing? {Comment #60}
The non-penalty only applies if the gearbox gear change is before qualifying. The bearings can't be changed, so if one ends up in the wrong place...
You're crazy jon, did I mention how crazy that is?
Pure crazy.
it's gonna happen at somepoint, and when it does, i'm going to be right here linking back to this comment ;)
One can only hope, for the championship sake. I still think Jenson/brawn have it won
I don't think Rubens has ever collided with any of his teammates. No reason for that to start now... :P
LOL. Just listening to PK complain about the "young F1 drivers" again :-) :-)
http://mantovani.zip.net/
Rubens is Employee of the Month! :D
Yeah he just takes everyone out else instead and still survives!
Awwwwwwwww :)
thats because he'd have been hung drawn quatred, shot by firing squad, cut up a bit more, then boiled in a pirana tank for a day, and then finely chopped again, if he'd done it at ferrari
poor zombie rubens :(
those red eyes don't make him look like a zombie anymore... they make him look like he just cried...
why is that a nightmare? i had a strange dream that there was a grand prix at my school last night… but i like your dream better!
I dreamed of TheLastDoctor turning up in the middle of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (or at least I think it was that one because I didn't recognise the s). No Sidepodcast or fake Twitter account involvement though, possibly because I only spent five hours asleep last night...
true :( http://mantovani.zip.net/images/barrichello_2009.jpg was my favourite one he has ever done :D
This Monaco GP is quite boring when you know the result......
Makes me want to sing Thriller...
:-)
Hehe. When I watch replays, I use other commentaries so that it's not as boring and you might learn something new. :D
new podium dance for Barrichello? :D:D
Sadly the option is the Aussis who but in for 5 minutes after the commercials with stupid comments. Makes Legard sound informed
I do that too, I download the 5 Live one and try it with that :D
I should do an audio special of the great things they come up with.
How on earth?
How did THAT happen? I posted on the wrong threat in LCLT! :D
sparetomato on Twitter is looking for "some decent #f1 blogs other than vee8, F1Wolf and F1Fanatic".
Quick, someone tell him about SPC! :D
the mp3 turns up on [redacted], and I have the bbc video so I mute Legard/Brundle and play the mp3 to match up with it :)
cool! how big is the mp3 file?
Ah, hadn't realised that.
Why does Cameron Mcconville need to relate EVERYTHING to Mark Webber?
...the world doesn't revolve around marky anymore?
Damn, I need to adjust my goals in life.
the monaco race is 73mb
because he is the messiah
I read that as I need to adjust my goats in life
He's not the messiah he's a very naughty boy
Because he thinks all Aussie F1 fans are Webber fans...
Not bad... Now if I could only find a race replay on JTV...
you could also use the iplayer...the less imoral way lol
No I'll sort them out at a later date
Not from Oz
shes in Australia, Jon.
:D
now where have i heard that from
i can't be bothered going to the effort of trying to get around the geolock :D
oh ok
Good to hear.
Boo for mentioning the site here!
Agreeeeeeeed
I hate that man! JA down under!
The funniest thing I saw at the Grand Prix was the look of relief on the McLaren staffers face when I said "It's OK, I'm not Australian" after he said "wouldn't it be great if Mark won here"
Instead we had a good chat about Bruce. Bruce > Mark :D
is it an unmentionable? I did not knooooow!
Because if you vaguely followed F1 in Australia, Mark was talked about as a future star for years on tv. It was nice to follow him through, just like the seeing Lewis in those old magazine for the last 10 years. But more accurately, journalism always works like that. If something happens overseas, for two days that's fine reporting the drama, but then you need to find someone that is from the area where the story will be shown, otherwise people think it is too far away and not relevant. I don't agree with this but journos tell me this happens.
You're supposed to keep it a secret. Hopefully Mr. C. will edit the posts!
Hey we aren't ALL Webber fans...
i think it's an unwritten unmensionable
Diehard McLaren fan right there. :D
ah, i found out about its existance from the comments here :D
Do you remember the guy Timo Glock replaced in his F1 debut?
He wants to come back...
*raises hand* that would be my fault then... :D
Bruce Mclaren is the most under-loved of the Kiwi sporting heroes :(
I can if you want?
You = awesome ;)
take out all the ones where I saw something stupid. at least one or two will remain :)
for a secret, you guys have told a lot of people....
So apparently i can listen to the radio iPlayer. I didn't realise. Maybe this means I can listen to the 5 live commentary!
It would be a good idea I reckon.
nope i forgot him. he can fight with Jacques..
Actually you can! I don't think that is geo-locked. The only problem is to do so you often spoil the result...
he is destined for a lifetime of GP2, that man.
pretty sure no Paul. some options are not available on the radio, but I might be wrong. i tried it to and eventually i realised radio had similar things to the tv - i am not in uk either.
I tried. Didn't work. Gave me a random 4-minute SPL clip.
Hmmmm. I dont understand. It says I can listen to the radio replays. Maybe not the live stuff
Campos seem interested to take him back to F1.
Ah well. BAck to the unmentionable then
there's a link, all right, but for some reason, it didn't give me monaco. it gave me scotland...
I think it's possible... It has been in the past...
:-)
Why does it need real player for goodness sake?!
it must be nice to live in a site where you can have live tv and good commentary in synch! sadly, not for me it seems wherever i live...well i can but cannot understand some of it. following the race is easy, it's the technical stuff i don't tend to follow.
Don't ask me. It used to be more lenient in previous versions - any version that can play Real will do. Not anymore...
I downloaded real player solely to hear Christines radio debut. Now I'm scared to uninstall it in case something else happens on BBC Tees I need to hear.
I don't want to infect my computer with that program
how does one, ahem...get an access thingy for this?
I only got to listen to iPlayer again today - my work laptop has it pre-installed. Might as well take advantage of it...
I’ve had the odd dream from time to time. But it’s only happened to me twice or thrice. {Comment #167}
I get quite a lot of F1 racing dreams, though most of them wouldn't interest you since they're either mental replays of races that have already happened or ones that appear to be a extension of the analysis process I go through when, for example, I see the weights after qualifying.
erm... pop me or Amy an email directly. Let's sort it out there.
Or me.
Time for a shower me thinks....
haven't got out of bed for 2 days.....holidays are bad for me...
My battery is about to run out. Night folks..
Night Paul.
Night
okay can someone write to me saybekatrocketmailcom thanks. this account if used for spam so i got no worries about sticking on this website
see you later Paul
Night!
Night Paul
I just kind of caught up with all the Brawn debate from earlier.
!LONG COMMENT ALERT!
I like Jenson but I don't think he's as good a driver as some of the others on the field. However, some are saying that Jenson doesn't deserve to win. It's difficult for me to understand what "deserve" means when this season shows so strongly how important the car is to a driver.
It's fair to say that Lewis beat / is beating Hekki pretty easily. And depending on your opinion he beat Alonso in his rookie season (if you don't believe that bit then read the sentence as "he got very close to Alonso in his rookie season"). Jenson hasn't really been able to dominate his team-mates. That has always worried me about him.
Jenson deserved a win (or several) to make up for all the years of terrible cars that he had. But then people started asking the uncomfortable question... Does he deserve to win the world championship. Like they did with Massa last year.
It's the same question people have been asking about Brawn earlier. Do they deserve to win when they just arrived in the sport?
The answer to all of these questions is very simple for me. Formula 1 is not a driver sport, it's a team sport. The team works together. The team are hugely influential on the drivers performance.
Jenson had faith in Ross Brawn. Brawn knew that if he built Jenson a good car he could win the championship. They, as a unit, have pulled off possibly the largest upset in F1 history. And people are asking if he or they deserve the championship?
Regardless of the jokes that people make, your granny could not drive an F1 car. It is hard to do. But a large part of the sport is working as a leader in your team. It's what Schumacher did before and in many ways it's what Jenson is doing over at Brawn. He is the lead driver at Brawn.
Lewis works for McLaren, the mechanics don't seem to look up to him. Who do the mechanics look up to at Ferrari? Nobody. The mechanics are unled. They don't want to do it for their driver. But I bet everyone in that Brawn team over the off season knows how much Jenson committed himself to that team. They know that he cut his salary to keep the team going. They were working for their driver.
That doesn't make Jenson a faster driver, no. But it might well make him a better driver. And Brawn definitely deserve it.
As Bernie said when Ferrari won all those times, "it's not Ferrari's fault they are so fast, it's everyone else's fault that they are all too slow".
But yes the racing isn't very close, moment to moment, the racing isn't as exciting as it could be. But what Brawn are doing as a whole really is very exciting. At least it is to me.
This. Well done Alex!
Agreed! :)
I hadn’t realised that Vijay Mallya is also a Doctor. People always refer to Dr Mario Theissen but I haven’t really seen them refer to Dr Vijay Mallya. {Comment #220}
Possibly because people have an image of PhD holders that does not include hosting parties on the largest boat in Monaco harbour or wearing vast amounts of "bling". Then again, people with honourary doctorates don't often use their titles, otherwise certain parts of the celebrity world would be littered with doctors.
Scott, Amy, email sent. :)
Yup, if they finish the job, this will easily be the biggest upset in F1 history.
Have gone through and edited all unwanted occurrances of the U word. They stretched back quite a way, so please can we try and be more vigilant if this is something we don't want to promote.
“Just two full ones”…is it as massive a job as I think it is? {Comment #248}
I have Harry Potter books 2 and 3 on audio. They are around 10 hours each - and remember that there will, every so often, be the need for multiple takes and breaks to get pages turned.
Sorry, Christine. Thanks for the edits. :)
Thankyou! Now that I know, I shall not do it again.
BTW, Gavin, Amy and I ran into some difficulties. Can you email Scott instead? Would appreciate it. :)
I think those who say he's undeserving are those who think it's just the car that's good. True, having a good car helps but Jenson has still dominated the field and his teammate so he must be quite good. These people do not understand how bad his other cars were so they see him as lucky and undeserving.
Also sorted your wrong thread from earlier as well, Journeyer.
Somebody please remind me later...
Yup, I saw it. Thanks for that, too. :D
I'm downloading the whole commentary for the 2007 Britcar 24 hours....hmmm
Long day ahead i fear
Very good points there! Do they edit FIF1 and Williams on the Monday after the race, even if it’s recorded on Sunday? {Comment #285}
I think FIF1's gets edited on Monday, possibly stretching into Tuesday (presumably depending on the length and complexity of the material to be edited).
Annoyingly the Monaco ForceCast still isn't there...
Somethings wrong when they do 1 test and then dominate all year. It’s like at school when you spend all week preparing for a test then some smary geek does not revision at all and still gets higher grades. I’m stuck between being patriotic and yet not actually liking Button at all. {Comment #320}
As someone who found revision was usually counter-productive, I fell into that category. I don't think anyone hated me for exam success - the ones that did the hating already hated me for thinking exams were fun in the first place...
you can’t not revise and still get an A for a subject when you never went to the lectures and had no knowledge of the subject in the first place {Comment #337}
Did you sign up for a second degree in beverage studies then? That seemed to be a popular course where I studied (though there it was given a title of "drunken studies" because the few times some of the people "enrolled" turned up for their primary degree, they were either slightly drunk or nursing a hangover)...
I am one of the most boring people ever, I only drink about twice a year, and even though I went to the notorious party-Uni, I was the same then too. I once got told I will look back and regret not "enjoying" my youth, but so far so good.
As long as you're happy doing what you do, you'll have no regrets!
You have us, Heikki, and F1 to thank for that. ;)
I definitely have a lot more money to spend on fun things than my more "I go out 6 nights a week" friends ;)
I'm the same. I'm happy with how I live my life, don't need a student reputation to live up to to enjoy myself :)
Would you judge me if I said I was currently watching a review of Monaco from the Finnish broadcasters?
I am awesome at this Finnish language thing.
"Saimme varoituksen FIA:Ita. Älä leikkaa enää shikaaneja!" means "we have had another warning from the FIA, do not cut the chicane!" apparently.
Morning all, just discovered ive missed out on a mysterious U word... the mind boggles
Does anyone understand Portuguese?
ESPN Brazil reporting something very interesting...
http://espnbrasil.terra.com.br/formula1/noticia/51966_REVISTA+APONTA+QUE+GOOGLE+PODE+SER+O+NOVO+PATROCINADOR+DA+BRAWN
Key words: Google and Brawn
Often the party types are actually the unhappy ones overcompensating anyway! Just be yourself, that's the easiest way to be happy. When you force yourself otherwise, that's when life is a drag!
Woah; surely not a google title sponsor?
that is lol considering Larry Page was in town as a guest of Vodafone :D
What's Brazilian for GMM? ;)
I wanna read the article, but the page is taking forever to load.
But if it's a title sponsor... I will just be awe-struck. And Richard Branson will be told to eat his heart out...
As Gavin said, there are some Sidepodpeeps going though, and perhaps an unofficial meetup will occur. {Comment #389}
With regard to that meet-up, I notice that of the three Sidepodpeeps confirmed in the wiki}, we all have Friday in common. Would Friday after second practise at the Copse E-Zone make sense, or should it be somewhere/somewhen different?
I'd like to confirm a day/time quite soon because there are other people from around the internet I'd like to invite as well.
Hey, it's ESPN, so it has some credibility to it. But I want to read the full article.
shall i post the translation?
sure. I see GPWEEK in it, though. *Rushes off to check current issue*.
have translated it in google. Don't read too much into it, it is basically putting fuel on the rumours that were around this weekend that things aren't too peachy between Brawn GP and Branson... just cause he was seen in the Red Bull hospitality area (where loads of celebs could be found) during the weekend. It just says that Brawn GP are reportedly looking for other sponsors including Google. But tbh they obviously were going to look for other sponsors because they can now get a much better price than they could have done in Australia. Nothing to get excited about really.
It's in there. Conjecture and Paddock gossip - nothing more solid than a few sightings...
Hmmm... much rumor, little substance.
Remember too that Google was connected to this same franchise before. In its previous life as Honda, Google was being floated as a potential title sponsor for the Earthdreams program. Nothing came out of it...
i've been seeing these rumours all weekend, nothing in it atm though, they are just rumours.
Branson had dinner on Vijays boat, but they already have an airline sponsor, so i guess thats ignored...
I believe Lou more than the article TBH...
fair enough. :)
So Branson is gonna sponsor Red Bull AND Force India as well as Brawn?
Wow, Formula Branson it is then!
Me too. :D
If it is Bernie really will be in a pickle... :P
:D
Only awesome? It's 5 Pints of Awesome!
:D
Apparently, Simon Gillett of Donington Park has been in trouble before...
I'm wondering what Mr C has in store for the Doohickey to make it catch up with LCLT
The source is F1-Live via a GMM story. What’s the story? {Comment #437}
The story is that there are four deposits on the table, meaning that any team needing a cheap Cosworth supply (yes Williams, I mean you) can have one. If there'd been fewer than four deposits, then each contract would have been at a different rate, making it just like any other engine contract and possibly an unreachable price for some teams that might otherwise have been interested.
Not much, I don't think. The doohickey does it's job very well and has already had the bulk of the attention.
It was the LCLT that needed to catch up.
Indeed. It's perfect for the iPhone. :D
Fair enough. I thought there were updates in store. There may still be, just not as... extreme as LCLT was.
Absolutely. Neither are ever really finished.
Has it been mentioned that the teams asked for an extension beyond May 29, which the FIA denied?
Source
nothing particularly exciting, unless anyone has ideas for new features?
next on the list (after bug fixing) is:
- site redesign
- desktop doohickey
in that order.
Saw that yesterday, however....Max said they'd still accept entry's for the current teams after that if they were going to have a paddy about the rules...(i've paraphrased ;) ) so i'm a bit confused
Moveable boxes? ;)
sounds good to me. :) not that i see much of the site itself anymore. :D
Ah man, we were doing so well avoiding the dreaded G word until recently.
haha!
haha, same.
Finn-tracker?
you will ;)
G word!? now i'm confused
Hamiltonometer?
From my understanding, the 10 teams have a reserved spot for 2010 if they enter by Friday. However, if they do NOT enter by then, they lose that reserved spot, so it'll become first-come-first-served for the remaining spots.
Basically, it's a question of whether or not Max really has more than 3 new entries. If he has, FOTA is in trouble (unless Toyota are really dropping out, leaving 4 vacancies). If not, Max will look rather silly...
Well, not ALL G stories are bad. This one has proper sources and quotes, so I don't think there's any issue with referencing this story.
oooh... it's THAT good, eh? we shall see. :P
I do.
If he didn't let one of the current teams back in because they didn't apply in time i would die of shock-ed-ness
Could you have the option of using the LCLT like the doohicky and be able to display comments from all threads, not just the one open?
Although i suspect you will look at this and just go WHY?
oooooh, that G word
It's really key that I reckon...
I didn't look at the LCLT thing yesterday... But I did post 5 or 6 comments from the iPhone and didn't know there were all sorts of exciting things going on.
I normally try and be really well behaved and visit the main page. But sometimes it is very tricky when I'm out and about.
gmm are an awful company. yes some of their stories might be fine (if you shoot enough bullets eventually you'll hit something/one). however, we still discourage linking as it only increases the likelihood of more people paying them for such dire services.
be strong people ;)
correct. ummm, why?
Mr C... Very minor thing about the LCLT I wasn't sure if it had been mentioned but is it on purpose that you can't hide the mail and site boxes any more? When watching video it can still be a bit tight on vertical space.
i still have spc as my home page so i get to see new posts and such, plus i catch up with discussions via ye olde comments :)
nope. i forgot. steven's raised a bug and it's being fixed.
as you can imagine... we have plans ;)
Cool :) I read that comment as me being able to blame Steven. Excellent :)
I can :)
That's why I wanted to clarify what the real story was. Don't worry - I left a comment there telling them off for doing it as their story was completely wrong!
I think a good use of the factbox would be to have a set of live ometers during the race.
Oooh... Trulli causing a train. I better move the Trulliomer up a bit.
Ooooh Lewis has spun... Better move the Lewisometer down to Rock Bottom.
Heikki has won the race, better put the Amyometer to maximum
:)
They would have to go to 11
good man!
Cheers. Will link to it later :)
sound like a plan. at first it might be read-only. hopefully there could be voting and other interactive things shortly afterwards.
:D When the new daily thread starts, or people move into a live thread its difficult to see what has happened...
I guess im better off using the doohicky...
Real Jake has jointed twitter.
www.twitter.com/jakehumphreyf1
That's kinda funny to do that after his fake counterpart had!
Do you remember the guy Timo Glock replaced in his F1 debut?
He wants to come back… {Comment #508}
Giorgio Pantano has about as much chance of an F1 return as Jacques Villnueve. I still cringe at his performance in the Jordan...
You know its a bad day when you spell your own name wrong
i shall introduce them lol
looks like real Jake got in first on May 18 and promptly stopped using it :D he says "I couldn't get jake humphrey so I went for www.twitter.com/jakehumphreyf1 and I will start regularly using that soon too (probably in Turkey) so start following everyone!!"
So Branson is gonna sponsor Red Bull AND Force India as well as Brawn? {Comment #589}
Sounds like Richard knows all the right people to get free meals in one of the most expensive places to eat there is...
Gavin, why did you not tell us that Aqua's new single has been released in Denmark today? ;)
what??
This is big news.
It has? Lordy!
I knew SPC would be excited.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz8loLIYc2Q
RealJakeHumph is following Jamesallenonf1
hehehe
i almost like this.
look at the words, they're very funny
Just as cringeworthy as I was expecting, brilliant :P
Although the lyrics are very funny
Loving FakeFlav's latest tweet. :D Won't post it here, look at it over there. ;)
Oh dear oh dear this is really bad :(
Even my wife is embarassed by Danish Music!
How can they sound the same as 15 years ago?!
Cryogenically frozen
I quote, "THAT'S WHAT THE DANES CAN DO!" ;)
Because none of them changed at all. The baldy (René Dif) advertises crisps and appears in Danish Movies now :(
That said, you gotta love all the 80s references they shoved in there. :D
Hahaha!
i have no audio. i'll listen later though.
I am surprised they manage to be in the same place at the same time considering Girl Aqua was dating him once but is now married to Spikey Haired Aqua. Why do I know this?
Can I get my 4 minutes back?
Well it worked for Fry in his travels from the year 2000 to the year 3000 in Futurama so I firmly believe thats the case, as Futurama is no doubt a worthy source of trust for such issues.
Girl Aqua is referred to here as "Aqua-Lene"...
it's so bad, it's good! :D
Yes, why DO you know this? :P
worked for no doubt.
are there lots of people called Lene? or is it for no reason like how I got called Amy Girl at my old work, even though I was the only Amy there?
There's a #katesdirtysister!
Gavin Rossdale joined No Doubt? ;)
Lene is quite a popular name over here...
hahaha when i first started reading this i thought you were referring to Nick Fry! ahaha :D
before him... i'm guessing.
I'm the girl to have in your team for pop culture questions in pub quizzes :)
....Seb Buemi's mum is on twitter?
I just spat my drink everywhere when I saw the you are being followed email appear on Gmail notifier...
Sorry, Fake seb buemi's mum of course ;)
Can I throw him in one of the chambers? :P
Although, in all fairness to the chap, he hasn't been so bad this year!
I don't know what he's saying, but I don't care.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/heikki-avi
I think I need therapy.
Borgs don't do therapy. :P
I think he says
"Well if Amy was here this weekend I think I could have won, I know it. it is a shame for sure, I need a haircut and my laundry is done"
My finnish a bit off though...
Points for humor, but Kathi can beat you, I'm sure. :P
i think that might just be spot on.
not in a million years. :P
maybe not the part about the haircut, the shorter it gets the bigger his forehead appears.
actually that's the part that has the best shot at being true. :D
Ah don't listen to Journeyer, he's lost it Amy. Heikki blatently mentions you.
:P
I'm the sane one here! :P
Well, I haven't seen any photos of Catherine at any races this year....
I saw her in one of the Spanish GP pictures, if memory serves me right...
If I ask who Catherine is will I get stuff thrown at me?
Catherine is Heikki's wife...
No, it's apparently not normal to know who drivers girlfriends are unless they are like THAT woman and try get on TV :D
Once they are married they seem to get hidden away..
Thanks Journeyer
righteo bedtime for me! night spcland :)
It won't happen with THAT woman, I assure you. ;)
night Borg. :P
niiight!!
see ya amy.
Afternoon peeps.
Whats going down in groovetown?
Aqua. That's what's going down. :D
No..no! Oh god no!
Yes, yes, yes! :D
Hides from the evil...
*puts on new Madness album very very loud..*
You cannot hide from the eeeevil! :D
*shudders*
*fingers in ears*
LA LA LA LA LA L A I CAN'T HEAR IT LA LA LA LA LA
Cmon, you know you want to... :P
To change the subject, anyone else keep getting fakesidepodcast and normal sidepodcast confused on twitter?
yep, it can lead to some funny moments :D
who maintains fakesidepodcast, BTW?
Back to the 80s... :D
I am not here.
Carry on
I did last night which was confusing, yup
Why comment if you're not here, then? :P
No idea. It's almost definitely a regular, because they talked to fakejakeh last night about his language after I mentioned it, but it's not me!
Have been listening to 2007 Britcar 24hour commentary, so i've taking a break from it and watching the Top Gear episode it's in :) yeyyy
Mansell had a group of fans who thought he was great but there were a lot of people who thought he was a whingeing, maoning PITA. I started out as a fan but a combination of the above and the drama queen an inability to say I and not we bugged me to the point where I hated him being on screen.
you could just unsubscribe?
And also the most boring man on earth.
That brummie accent kills any excitement he could have had. :D
PITA?
I think they like fakey, they just get him confused, that's all. :)
Pain in the a***
Ohhh.
I swapped some drivers in the race and made $2 million by last night
That's some big bucks. :D Must learn to master that art. :)
the confusion is sometimes half the fun! :D
Easy. You pick drivers who do really badly and dump them before everyone else does and buy drivers who are doing better than expected.
I still haven't got up to $50 million yet so I think I probably just got lucky this time.
But all my drivers do well... Except Vettel, which was why I dumped him. But I picked him back up too early. Most people only made their updates on Monday night. :(
Hello...you...lot. Who are ya all again?
Have I missed out today/yesterday/sunday?
we have a new lclt! :)
WHAT? WOOOOOOOOOO.
I assume the links in the daily post? Cos I haven't read that yet.
:) did you have a nice time at your families?
http://www.sidepodcast.com/livecommenting/
It was great, weather was lovely. Had a nice bank holiday.
I love Mr C
It was the dullest Monaco ever though
The other thing you should try is taking a slightly later apex until you build up speed. If you apex later than ideal you will be a bit slower but if you apex early you will go off on the exit so it is better to be later then gradually apex eralier as you build speed.
Please, why are people wasting their breathe comparing the current crop of drivers to the greats of F1? comparing Button to the greats is absolutey laughable and so far, Hamilton career to date is equal to JV's carreer in his third season. As much as people here love to say that JV was/is rubvlish, I an still waiting for Hamilton to win the Indy 500, which is like doing to decent Grand Prix back to back with half again the field....
No, the Greats = the men like Fangio, Stewart, Graham Hill, and Lauda will still have to wait for the dust to settle before history finally decides to allow Prost, Senna, Schumacher to entered their numbers and debate about Alsono before these guys get a chance...
Kamikazing your way to a championship should DQ a driver from being a "great".... That takes out Senna, Prost and Schumacher.
I was wondering this the other night, which would be a greater challenge physicaly, Monaco GP or the 500?
I was thinking Monaco, although it doesnt have the G-forces of Indy, The stop start and wheel movement at Monaco is surely far greater?
Or put another way the car is no good. If the driver can look good on a track where the driver is more important than the car then the reason he looks bad elsewhere is the car.
Right - off out again. Local cinema is doing a racing films special this week.
They've got some great stuff for one showing only. Tonight a new print of Grand Prix. :D
Tomorrow, Le Mans... :D
TTFN
Monaco is a lot harder physically. Indy has no real speed difference so there is no braking or acceleratin loads on the driver. Indy is like a billiard table compared to Monaco so the driver doesn't get shaken to bits and of course Indy has constant yellow flags where the driver can sleep fro 10 laps.
see ya
You are even harsher than me. I think itis fair to try to compare drivers from other eras. Fans have always done that and always will. Generally people's views on the ability/[erformance of drivers is based on very little. There are a load of people who think Hamilton got the McLaren drive in the first place due to luck and wa lucky to get a championship last year and he is the biggest cheat in the history of the sport because he lied to the stewards in Australia. Their whole opinion of him is based on him going straight into a top team and a couple of clashes with th stewards. Some of them will never change that opinion regradless what he does.
Samewith JV. Some people can't see past the BAR thing and th fact that in his last season his performance was not that good. His previous record andth family history that encouraged him to set up his own team are ignored. People forget how Schumacher reacted to him prior to Jerez 97. Hakkinen may be rated as Schumacher's biggest rival but Schumcher clearly rated JV as a real threat for a couple of seasons and I don't rememeber ever hearing of Schumacher racing anyone other than JV on the public roads.
You need to publixise stuff like that for anyone in the area. Why has that not been all over the net?
posting from phone so no capitals or punctuation
found out about it when i walked past the cinema this afternoon
had just enough time to go home and have a shower and get changed into less scummy clothes
had no idea it was doing one
missed the scifi one lst week was showwing alien and aliens
You would think that any cinema doing something like that would have been all over the net.
Just found fakeDanica.
love the aqua tune btw :)
although i am lost by the reference to soap?
I was thinking soap operas like Dallas, Dynasty, etc. Thats all I can assume.
probably something else though
Is the twipocalypse real? Any techy people?
http://www.twitpocalypse.com/
ahh. was thinking... we gave up soap in the 80's and no-one told me?
:D
it doesn't say twitter will collapse, just "some 3rd party clients". so it depends how well written apps like tweetdeck are i guess.
Pretty crazy how many tweets are flying about though!
167 tweets per second. mental.
- the average tweets per second and the Twitpocalypse date are a rough approximation, please do not schedule any vacation around that date
:D
Is the identifier number they talk about real or is the whole ting just a scam?
It had to be a Wednesday. Typical.
I wonder if there will be some prize for the 2 billionth tweet.
I've just left some tremanying for my sins
Oh good. I think people should leave more tremayning voicemails. We have just had a poll for trmayning on a show. If there were more tremayning voicemails there could be another poll.
For anyone who has missed it you have 3 hours left to vote in the first two match ups in the circuit cup. You can vote for Monza vs Shanghai and for Interlagos vs Valencia.
http://www.sidepodcast.com/2009/05/25/circuit-character-cup-round-1-monza-shanghai-interlagos-valencia/
feel much better now, should include it in fitness regime lol
yeah, it's real.
at a guess, i'd say the people who made the site also make a twitter client and realised they'd screwed up. so they're using this to get everyone to upgrade to the latest version or something.
either that, or because they've accounted for it, they're highlighting it to everyone else.
I just got Grand Prix 2 working after downloading it earlier. It's based on the 1994 season. It has pre-qualifying! : O
I used to love that game..
Brundle in the McLaren ftw. And Laurousse! Or something beginning with L anyway.
Any sign of Bertraund Gachet?
I still have a copy of that somewhere. I used to be really good on that game
He was gone before that. It was 91 that he had his little incident and some German kid got his drive.
Wasnt he in the Pacific* after that?
*Possibly the best f1 team ever
Just checked. He did 92 fo Larrousse and 94 & 95 for Pacific. DNQed a lot an retired when he didn't DNQ. 2 finishes in 2 seasons
Think my dad has it somewhere as well. Might as well check it out again.
Brawn GP's eNews email just revealed a new Q&A thing for the website...
also..... a RUBENS BARRICHELLO SIGNED HELMET COMPETITION.
Awesome!!!
Poor Rubens. First they make him number 2 then they give away his helmet.
Hmmm...Would'nt mind asking why Andrew Shovlin always look so terrified...
he is probably thinking about how ill prepared he is for the triathlon Jenson has got him to be in. lol
haha awesome :)
Although I can't find it yet, boo. I'm sure it'll be up soon :)
They might have failed to realise their potential, but they did paint some cool cars..http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/greatest-livery-ever-jpg
when you log in.... look at the main menu options. submit a question is one of them ;)
Oooh, good spot! :)
Too much white for my liking. A black/yellow background would be better.
Ahh, the competition starts thursday. should proof read more and stop staring at the pic of the helmet.
Evening all, a quick catch up on comments before I disappear again to do homework :-)
Agreed - I've set myself Button, Vettel and Glock (can't afford any more) and I'm just leaving it like that for a while. I'll still keep an eye on scores and might tinker with the 3rd position if Glock keeps doing badly, otherwise that's it..
It was shimmering silver!!!
I still haven't listened to the one I was on. My voice is better than expected but I still don't like hearing it.
Shimmering Silver. Pah. Close enough to white.
Suppose I better check mine.
Years ahead of Mclarens current attempt!
The day Spyker return, I will be happy. Until then. I can only moan about the liveries.
Maybe we can ask Danny to reset everyone's budget to 40 Million again.
me too!
703 points!!
Oh, there were people with 800 and 900, and 1000, and 1100.
Creeping right up on Mr C though.
You can't change the rules mid-season. We constantly complain about Max doing that. You deserve your position.
No.. I just don't have time to go into the details. I just want to pick my drivers each week. Bear in mind I have no idea what last year was like, so...
It would be like given everyone their own double diffuser. I'd still have my points advantage
Yep. You saw things that other people didn't - that's how F1 is, isn't it?
Here it is in full glory at Monaco http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/pacific-jpg-2
sidepodspace update
NASA TV is covering the launch of the Soyuz from Baikonur Cosmodrome tomorrow at 5:45am EDT 10:45 UK. The Soyuz is headed for the ISS and its arrival will mark the start of permanent 6 person crewoperation. This wil also be the first time that al 5 major partners USA/Russia/EU/Japan/Canada will have astronauts on board at the same time.
Most of the time on TV it looked grey. Not that it got much time on TV
:D
I have a miniature replica somewhere...
exactly as you've described.
it wouldn't be fair on any of the other leagues though?
plus we want you to maintain your advantage :)
i just heard "many white goats" when someone said "men in white coats"
ooops
it's not the budget that's the issue for me. it's that FR has gone from a low maintenance game to a very high maintenance game.
that said, the new rules do appear to be generating a lot more discussion and debate this year so it's all good. even if i'm just a spectator to the main event.
I didn't play last year so I can't compare :(
I only have 1.6 Million more than autosport's richest. I wouldn't loose much.
thankyou space correspondent :) must remember tomorrow...oh damn. another meeting.
Excellent :-)
it was high enough for me - just thinking about bothering to do it was too much effort. But I agree with me that it's great to watch you guys discuss all the tweeks, and find the loopholes, but I'd rather play one of those stock market prediction games if I have to do a lot. money = money :)
am confused why you want to loose anything?
you're leading the whole competition, doing a fantastic job of managing your team, flying the flag for sidepodcast and we're all immensely proud of you to boot.
why the need for change?
Because everybody seems unhappy :(
But if you're all happy being unhappy then fine. I'll try to find my inner-Schumacher. :)
you go girl!
take the championship Kathi!
That's the spirit :)
You're the Brawn of the season. You didn't compete last year, and this year you've worked out something that nobody else did. Tis awesome :)
:)
A rule change was made and you made the most of it. There are plenty of people happy with it as it is now.
I'm sure if I had more time to play it I'd enjoy it too.
Someone wants to pay me to put a link on my blog.
i'm not unhappy that you're leading! i spent the whole of last year loosing, that's what i do best.
i was unhappy that more effort was being demanded of me, but that's just because i'm massively lazy at heart :)
i'm no longer unhappy cause i just stopped playing and now i watch.
watching other people plan their strategies is just as much fun as trying myself, and ultimately a damn sight less hassle too.
please keep up the good work mini-schumi, and remember we expect a victory speech come the end of the season ;)
oh wow!! thats awesome...potentially..
This is the root of my complaint too :-)
Maybe.. I was reluctant to put Google Ads on there.. Will have a think.
I like this one. Can we keep her?
depends what/how much/how big tbbh
Perhaps if you decide to do it, just take it initially for a 2 month spin. See how you like it. You're choice though :)
:P
New strategy for Turkey sell brawns buy BMWs
are you completely insane?
:D
She might be, but she's good at this, might follow the plan.
I'm NOT giving speeches. *is hiding under the couch with Joe*
ok...so no speeches...
that's alright Kathi, just forget to charge you're laptop when they call you on skype ;)
hmm. how about we hand deliver you the trophy (and then play around on your internet (for about 5 years))?
Don't have a laptop but maybe I manage to break my audio input again until then ;)
.
You can keep the trophy, I won't make a speech and you may play with my Internet as long as you want :)
no trophy? but it's so shiny.
ooh, shiny
Best said in a heavy Yorkshire accent?
You could have told me 12 hours ago and I'd have given you it. ;)
Thank you. By "me" which me do you refer to Mr. C or yourself? I am trying to move up to the top spot and I think my options of Stirling Moss being the best ever No. 2 F1 driver should work...
I think it is fair to try to compare drivers from other eras. Fans have always done that and always will.
I think I try to do that too, given what is availible to the drivers at the time. Stewart crashing into either Clarke or Hill would have results with the deaths of both of them so gaining Championships the way Senna, Prost and Schumacher did unfairly gives them an additional method of getting championships and the "greatness" based on the number of championships won. In Clarke's day, you had to race to win championships. In Senna's day, you had to make sure you opponent did not pass you, slight difference in words, but on public roads it is called attempted vechilcular manslaughter.
A "Schumacher crop" on the New Nurburgring circuit results with a a driver going down the grass. A Schmacher Crop at the old circuit means a driver falls off a cliff.
Time to vanish to spend a couple of hours on exam revision. Just want I want to do after a day at work. May or may not be back later...
I'm gonna see if there's any 2009 mods for Grand Prix 2.
Start penning your speech already, It comes with the terriority. I should know...
Christine will hunt you down if you do not win. She threatened me online last year, and I have a bloody ocean between us...
This one's for Lukeh:
http://funnyvideos.todaysbigthing.com/2009/05/25
:D :D
I'm not scared *starts packing for the next shuttle mission*
haha, thats amazing
Oh my...
Was the pre show to Brazil or one of races just before me? I think it was back in the days where I wanted the panda to be named Carlos "the Panda" Reutemann....
out of interest: How do you learn/have you learnt driving?
:D
For me I'm having my test in 3 weeks time, have had a years worth of training nearly every week (except for 4 or 5 weeks at random points) in just normal lessons'; driving, techniques, the usual driving about that we have in the UK
I know in Finland you have the epic, OTT skid pan tests and allsorts that look amazing fun, as shown on top gear :P
Well, for starters you do not take a "crash" course....
I was just wondering because Lou was talking about learning to drive from her parents.
Yeah she's mentioned that. I've no idea if it's only allowed to have lessons from a qualified instructor or from parents but obviously you have to take the test with the right qualified people. Although you're free to have someone over 21 with at least 3 years experience be in the car with you if you want to get practise in.
Make us all miserable :D
(I should say, not just parents obviously, also people who have driving experience, etc included when I meant asides from lessons with instructors)
Ah OK, I didn't know that. In Germany you can only take lesson from a qualified instructor who has a car with an extra set of pedals. And you need 12 special lessons. 3 night lessons, 4 on the motorway and 5 on 'country roads' additionally to actually learning to drive. We like to complicate things :)
i'm not learning to drive with my parents, not properly, mum just wanted to be the one who taught me how to turn the car on and like move... but that didn't work out too well. anyways, i'll be having actual lessons (where i actually learn things) from an official driving instructor once my exams are done. Then i'll be practising on the roads between lessons with my parents.i'd never dream of having actual lessons with anyone other than an official teacher though, cause there is a difference between knowing how to drive and teaching someone to drive.
What about Autobahn lessons?
See, this is the bizarre thing about lessons. You're not allowed to go on the motorway if you have a provisional license (for when you're taking driving lessons) so when you become a qualified driver and you pass, you have no experience on motorways!
that's what I meant with motorway
Ah ok.
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/25/usf1-boss-peter-windsor-confirms-deal-for-cosworth-engines-in-20/1#c19023142
My Anti-G rant from earlier, as promised!
I think I prefer the German system. It's probably more expensive because you have to pay the instructor for the practice you can do with your parents but safer. And I loved my Autobahn lessons. Usually the instructors have shiny new cars which go much faster then whatever you get to drive afterwards.
goooooo you!
me likes ;)
The stupid thing is that in Denmark they don't recognise my Kiwi licence and I have to start all over again at a cost of 1200 quid! :(
Cheers - soz again for posting here but I had to make sure before I ranted!
isn't there the pass plus scheme?
There is only one female astronaut on that mission and she is Canadian. Maybe Jordan can teach you to speak Canadian in time.
There is, but that's even more money :( It'd be worth it in the long term because it can bring down insurance premiums but when you've spent £800+ already...
It's not that much more, and most councils will give you a grant towards it
Motorways are probably the easiest thing to drive on, if you can master dodgy A-road dual carriageways you'll be fine on a motorway
I've checked and ours don't.
Tbf they don't even have money for themselves because they're a lousy bunch o... ah it's not worth it.
i'm lucky that my parents are going to pay for everything for me, but yeah i can see how it can all mount up. My friend took the pass plus thing and she found it really useful... having said that she almost wrote off her poor little car today in a crash :(
If you have points or an accident its probably worth doing as your premiums will skyrocket, but otherwise it is very expensive
Ah, hope she's ok and everything :(
I'm still considering pass plus to be honest, if I pass in 3 weeks and depending on the next few months money wise we'll see but it's just a balance of whetehr I want to spend more alongside the advantage of lowering insurance in the future.
For you it's almost definitely worth it, male insurance for our age is incredibly high
Putting yourself on a 'classic' car for a year can also be a good way to bring down your premiums. A friend of mine was insured on his dads TR6 and his premium the following year for a clio was much lower than anyone elses
yeah she is alright, a bit shaken but she is more upset that she may have wrecked her car.
You can do advanced driving for free. The Institute of Advanced Motorists http://www.iam.org.uk/ have groups of volunteers all over the country who will teach you for the cost of a club membership. There are insurance companies that wil give you a discount if you pass that test.
Very true, it is. Now all I need is to become a boy racer listening to thumpingly loud rave music, lose respect for other road users and try and impress my own self esteem in a modded up glowing, hydraualic-pumping ford fiesta. ;)
wow, I suddenly feel dirty. *shudders*
Cheers Steven, will take a look at that :)
Aww, sucks that she's upset :(
But at least she's ok though, which matters most in such situations no doubt
Crashes always suck. Wrote off me dad's car - he wasn't that mad but I felt crap about it...
fake Bernie having a go at Jackie
-@saltire_ You filthy-minded chav. My daughter may bare her all in underwear ads, but I'll not have anyone thinking her dad is a pervert.
Still getting used to lclt. Keep scrolling down to type something in. Still love it.
You can also try the Rospa advanced driving association? which run a program like the IAM but instead of a pass/fail test their test has three levels of pass. The top grade is the hisghest civilian driving qualification in the UK.

Voting's closing on the Track cup... who voted for Valencia?
It's 11pm and still light outside. Finland is so confusing
Hi guys. Today was going well until I found out I have to pay charges on overuse of the internet. Yes I know, I'm a clot, a massive one at that. But my dad's an even bigger one for not telling me until this afternoon that unless I don't pay what I owe, we both get cut off the contract - thing is he never told me I had to pay anything until now when he's had the bill since the 4th!
My dad is *bleeping* useless sometimes...
Forgot that.
Can you upgrade to a larger data package? sometimes they let you off extra charges if you upgrade, you can always downgrade a month after
Contract's in my dad's name. And I doubt he'd want to do anything like that right now.
But enough of that, how are we all? :)
Tiiiiired. :(
Ditto. Added cramp.
How is your relegation RG? I assume you are a magpie.
Haha, argument on twitter I just noticed:
@fakebernie you are not a very nice man!! and your hair looks like a spiders web why are you so mean
@fakerubens It's narcissistic drivers and egomaniacal team bosses that make me mean. I have to be mean, for the sake of the sport.
@fakebernie yeah well you still have silly hair nyahnyah
Nope. Spurs fan. My friends (part from 2) are Newcaslte though.
NASA have done it again. After scheduling the shuttle mission round all the motor racing and then screwing up they have given us another one.
The next shuttle mission will launch at 7:17am EDT or 12:17pm UK. That is the same day Le Mans starts. So we get a space shuttle launch assuming NASA doesn't screw it up as the build up to a race with Franck in one of the starring roles.
Seems like it could be a good day.
Ah I see, I am a Boro fan and Im actually excited...and why not we're going to Blackpool :-)
Spose so. Wouldn't mind that, we get to go to Burnley. Which I'm not looking forward to.
Do we know about the meeting in London on wednesday about 2010?
Just wondering as I saw it but I'm usually a few days behind everyone ;)
No? Where is it, maybe i can turn up and report back!
Just found it on the BBC saying the teams would be meeting for more discussions
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8069121.stm
i hadn't heard about it. but i haven't checked my reader since sunday.
I did say in F1 Minute that the teams would be meeting again, but didn't know when it was.
Anyone fancy a Ferrari 430 that was driven by Bruno Senna?
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/24624/Ferrari_430_Challenge__Bruno_Senna.html
Only a reasonable *ahem* £130,000
hmm
Will he accept trades? I have a kitkat
and i have a Nokia phone thats been down the toilet and in a lake....
We're nearly there!!
Why did you flush?
It wasn't my fault with the toilet, twas my dads old phone and he sat on the loo and it fell out his pocket, luckily he noticed ;)
http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listing/24332/Ford_Fiesta_ST_Cup_ex_Works_car.html
Ford Fiesta...its b-e-a-utiful :D
:D
and for the second time in a week, its taken me a looooooooooong time to get a joke. thats rather funny hehe :D
NASA have published some great pictures to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo missions.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/40th/images/apollo_book_images.html
For anyoneinterested in Le Mans the entry list can be found at
http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/engages_gb.html
Christijan Albers is doing it? Woo, gonna support him then.
realistically how much of a chance does Ant Davidson stand at finishing well?
The Aston LMP1 won on it's debut. It's gotta be good!
Against the Audi?
what race?
I don't think the Aston can compete with the Audis or the Peugeots but it will probably be the next fastest car. The chances are that the best he can hope for would be third if we lose 4 of the Audis/Peugeots or they hit problems
I meant to say his car looks like the best Aston crew
How come he doesn't have the first number, or is this assigned in a different way>?
okay. that's good then :D also looking at the list i'd forgotten Franck and le seb were in the same car...
Thank god Klien's not in Franck's car this year.
Up to the team how they select who gets which number. Aston always request 007/008 etc. Seems odd to give 007 to a Czech/German crew
Do team china stand a chance?>
Klien is a good driver. The incident last year, was not his fault...
he can still hit him tho.
Le Seb better notscrew up or he will end up locked in the cupboard with Christian Klien
If he crashes Minassian's car he will punch him
Would he dare hit a car in his own team?
Never heard of team China
He drove into a gravel trap
Nuff said.
The, er, race track pushed him off.
You better be up to date with Christine's blog if you are going to make comments like that
Yeah, nice try...
i am. sorta.
No, got it. It was really Montagny driving in Klien's helmet.
Mind you, Christine did forget Franck's birthday...
...
Noo, I didn't mena Montagny, I meant the other driver. Oh god here comes the minus points again.
you know if christine see's that she may not be too happy ;)
There were no pegeuot's at hte track and the audi/s had a baaaaaaad day. So it's not that hard to win
:D
No i lie, there wasnt an audi there
WHAT???
I didn't forget. I didn't know in the first place. Now I do.
Only because I did that blog post ;)
I'll be on my own team for the panel next time.
True. And I gave you credit.
That you did :)
Righteo, I'm off to watch a film so I shall see you guys in the morning. Night all :)
Night Mr Lukeh
I think the Le Mans people have chose the drivers' nationalities out of a hat. I noticed they had McNish down as being from Monaco then I noticed that Darren Turner is down as CHE (Cheshire?). They have Verstappen as German, Peter Kox as British, Minassian as British, Brabham as British, Neel Jani is CHE,
Night Lukeh
Apparantly CHE means Switzerland
Once I found Neel Jani I thought that but I don't get it. CH is Switzerland but CHE? Wonder when Darren Turner became Swiss
Just noticed there is a Mansell racing so no dount daddy will be bugging us on the radio. Leo is in the number 84 LMGT2 Ferrari 430
I found it on some Abbreviation codes site.
Think the rest have been chosen randomly, or by where they live?
I think there are both 2 letter and 3 letter national code systems
GB and GBR
FR and FRA
ES and ESP
IT and ITA
CH(E) = Confoederatio H(e)lvetica
Bruno Senna is in the number 10 Oreca with Stephane Ortelli who was one of McNish's team mates when he won the first time in the Porsche and Tiago Monteiro.
You mean it makes sense? Well apart from Darren Turner not being Swiss.
Of course it makes sense. Amazingly, this is something I know because of an I-spy book!
Does he live in Switzerland?
And here I was thinking that it made sense because of Asterix and Obelix....
:-D
No idea
That came later
I'm sure Tiago's done Le Mans in a GT2 Porsche back in 1998/1999.
Not where I grew up :-D
(scuse us - we're sitting a floor away from each other tonight :-) )
Having not watched it before, what % of runners finish on average?
1999, finished 16th
Maybe at least 40%.
Ah yes the Monteiro brothers 911. Always getting into trouble in that race.
What happend?
Wow, that's less than i thought! Is it more failures or Incidents that thin out the field?
Ah, just seen that he did the 1999 race in a Paul Belmondo Viper.
Bit of both.
You get a mixture of people crashing out and mechanical failures. Bear in mind they are doing the equivalent of a full F1 season in a day.
Yeah, i can barely keep a car on the track for a lap in GRID, should be a good watch, is it on tv over here or is it streaming?
It is, but only on the likes of Motors TV and Eurosport.
Probably Eurosport or Motors TV will cover it.
No idea what the TV coverage will be butI am sure we will find streams
Well I know for a fact Eurosport will, I saw an advert on there for Le Mans.
It is Eurosport
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/65441
They had a three year contract last year, so this year and the next.
Christine tweeted about this earlier and I have to say I love it. Can't stop clicking on the play button. We need to find a way to get it into a show.
http://www.sadtrombone.com/
I guess if sidepodquiz is ever resurrected the trombone can be a wrong answer and the www.instantrimshot.com can be a correct answer.
I'm keeping that tab open all day, theres always opportune moments to play that.
Jenson has a new audio diary up on his site!!!! hehehe... you can tell he is smiling the whole way through it.
!!!!
.......
......and breathe....
................
I just saw this on diggnation http://twitter.com/penciljesus
Wot no pinger?
Sidepodquiz. Ah yes, wheres that gone?
Evenin' all
hey, how was your day?
we couldn't do it at the same time as podpanel. it'll be back shortly.
Yay!
If you feel the need for musical instruments RG you should try this
http://www.kenbrashear.com/
And thats me away for the night. :)
Might as well go now anyway, Maths Revision in the morning. Night.
Night RG
Night
Day was fine, have just spent the last 15mins compiling evidence in response to my cousin and the 20 people cc'd that Ericsson aren't actually giving away free laptops if I forward this email to all my friends
Was kinda fun actually in a 'don't be silly', patronising way! :D
It was the dullest Monaco ever though {Comment #733}
Apart from the battle for the final point (which I found riveting, but I'm biased), it made Monaco 2007 look thrill-a-minute.
Yeah she’s mentioned that. I’ve no idea if it’s only allowed to have lessons from a qualified instructor or from parents but obviously you have to take the test with the right qualified people. {Comment #855}
In the UK, anyone may instruct a learner as long as they're over 21, have over 3 years of experience and are legally permitted to drive the car in question (insured, holding a current car licence etc.). However, an instructor can only advertise driving lesson services or take gainful employment instructing if they're qualified.
isn’t there the pass plus scheme? {Comment #869}
There is, but nobody's obliged to take it.
