It's so close you can almost feel it, we're starting to get atmospheric pictures from the Sidepodcommunity on the ground in Australia. There's just one more day before things kick off, if you can count tomorrow as a full day. Meanwhile, here's what we've been discussing:

  • Two reserve drivers were revealed yesterday, with DC signed up for RBR and STR until poor Hartley can get his superlicence sorted. Meanwhile, Davidson will be the backup for Brawn GP. The BBC are losing their drivers all over the place, aren't they?
  • He's plugged it twice in the comments already, so I thought I'd save him coming back and plugging it again. Alex has a predictions game over on Sofa F1 that Mr C signed up for, and somehow I have been talked into it as well. It looks like fun, just a guessing game at the moment, of course. If you're interested, head on over to make your championship predictions.
  • Don't forget that if you've got a few minutes, you can post a comment with your short summaries for the F1 Digest - Australia Preview show. There's more info available here, and all I can reiterate for now is the shorter the better.

That'll do it for now. Just think, the next Daily post is due to go up about an hour before the live commenting gets underway. That's a nice feeling, isn't it? There's more info about our schedule for Australia here, and as ever, I will see you in the comments.

I just done my annual thing of creating a folder specifically for pics from the upcoming season and put 10 or so in it for now. I do the same for winter testing and have done since 2006 : P

    Anyone else do similar things?

    you have anything special planned?

Did it Tuesday. My parents and I went out to a posh local Italian restaurant. I had antipasto italiano (cold meats with salad), pasta carbonara and the house ice cream (pistachio and cream flavour). It was really nice.

Today, I have the JobCentre, town centre shopping, the library, Grandma, text processing class, lasagna, birthday cake and bed planned in approximately that order. I may not get much time to post comments today...

An important tip for anyone using BATracer.

If you convert a dry set up to a wet set up for the race remember to start the race on wet tyres.

  • Pat W26/03/2009 at 00:52

Joe Saward hears five teams not three.

On that note I'll see you tomorrow. I have a day of being crammed with accountancy information I'll immediately forget, before picking up a birthday card for my sister then coming home for some blogging.

If I get around to it I may just pick up a headset in case I get tempted on Sunday...

I wonder who did the questions, though... ;)

  • Bootneck26/03/2009 at 08:32

As some of you may know I'm a life long Williams fan, and it's good that this season it would seem that along with Toyota and BrawnGP we've stolen a march on the big boys as far as the rear diffuser is concerned. Just shows once again that it ain't just money that get you everywhere in this sport, but a little ingenuity goes a long way, even if the other teams follow it'll hopefully mean we've got 2 races on them.

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 08:38

Unless it gets banned, thanks to the FIA and the legal teams of the protesting teams - who probably spent a lot of money to get them banned.

  • Bootneck26/03/2009 at 08:51

Just watched the season preview, Brilliant, well done SPC, only thing is, 1 of the girrls in the office came in while I was watching it and wants to know why there's a spinning redbull can at the back of the Williams car........Bless.

  • Christine26/03/2009 at 08:56

Blimey, I wake up and Hamilton is dismissing suggestions he'll move to Ferrari (I must have missed this speculation?), the diffuser protests are in, and Brawn GP have a sponsor.

Hello all, I've just arrived back home from my first day at the circuit. The Vodafone event this morning was fantastic, and I'm just putting up videos on youtube now. Watching a Finn trying to hold a cricket bat was my highlight of the day.

Only F1 car on circuit today was the 2008 BMW in a speed comparison with a road car and a V8 supercar. Only two laps, but god I'd missed that sound...

Finished up my day with a trip to the McLaren pits, the guy hosting it was super friendly, but not too much to see in there because you can't go in the garage. Spotted Heikki hiding at the back of the garage though!

To anyone following me on twitter, sorry if I update too much, it's just too exciting!

Sort of. We talked about it the other day but we discussed the points changes more.

In CAR Magazine last month, David Richards gave an interview where he sounded keen to start an F1 team. I would LOVE to see Prodrive back in the sport...

I can't see Fortec starting a team without us knowing about it, and Prodrive just pulled loads of jobs at their plant so i can't see them doing it either. It is a bit confusing, i'm happy to wait to find out!

Hey, I meant to email you but my mac is in for repair at the mo, should be picking it up tomorrow. Turns out my Brother had already found a campsite and not bothered telling me, good job I checked with him before I booked anything!

  • Dank26/03/2009 at 10:46

Me thinketh Red Bull's season could be over before it's even began. If this diffuser protest doesn't go their way, there is no hope for them to be able to use a similar design to the Brawn et al thanks to their pull-rod suspension at the rear of their car.

    Woo.

  • chris evans26/03/2009 at 10:50

Don't know if anyone has posted this already, but there is a pretty good interview with Lewis on Autosport (once you cut through the PR speak anyway).

where'd you hear that, cause i don't believe it?

sounds like someone in the team is trying to overstate theit case to me. it would take them a while to match the design, but i can't see how the suspension has that much bearing on anything?

Here's my F1 Digest Australia preview quote:

Once again we're at the beginning of a new season and also a new era of Formula 1. Pre-season testing has only quenched our thirst for on-track action so much and now with the start of the first race just literally days away, the excitement is building as every minute goes by. I am so psyched for 2009 and greatly looking forward to what should be a fascinating championship opener. Brawn GP for the win! :D

Everyone else there was a Vodafone VIP - I was the only McLaren guest. To the point where I turned up my name was not on the guest and only the McLaren hospitality girl saved me, as it was on HER list. So I got to go right to the fence, and everyone else there sat down and barely watched what was happening. Got a free Lewis hat but I'd rather have a Heikki one.

They didn't hang around at all for autographs for the 3 people who wanted them, they had their media lunch at the Stokehouse to get to.

Now I really want to know who this McLaren person who put my name on the list is. I honestly thought he was probably a fake until this morning happened.

  • Amy26/03/2009 at 11:54

Good on you Kiwi for supporting McLaren!

The guy at the McLaren tour started off with 'oh wouldn't it be great if Webber won' and I said "I'm not an Australian, you don't need to lie to me"

So he asked where I was from, and when I told him he said "Oh! New Zealand, the real home of McLaren!"

When I told him I'dhad a drink with Bruce McLarens sister this morning he was floored I knew who she was. So we had a great chat and he pretty much ignored everyone else.

I might even get a chance to go back tomorrow, Jan is trying to organise something, but sadly most of the mechanics from Bruce's days that she knows have left over the last few years and its a bit harder for her.

he looked completely lost when I saw him run-walking away from the circuit today. He should have been on his way to the McLaren lunch but he was going in completely the wrong direction

my pet hate is when drivers change their helmets to match their car/sponsors. I like it when a driver can be associated throughout their career with it.

I saw Louise Goodman having a chat to Lee McKenzie at the media centre today. I couldn't be so civil to the person who took my role. Inside she must be fuming, I'm sure.

She has some kind of PR company now though - training drivers to handle the media well...

Since when can drop.io update itself?

  • Dank26/03/2009 at 12:24

    Autosport's Supergrid is back!

Calculated by methods unknown to man or beast, the 2009 grid looks like thus:

    1. Barrichello

    2. Button

    3. Rosberg

    4. Glock

    5. Massa

    6. Kubica

    7. Raikkonen

    8. Heidfeld

    9. Vettel

    10. Alonso

    11. Hamilton

    12. Nakajima

    13. Trulli

    14. Buemi

    15. Fisichella

    16. Webber

    17. Bourdais

    18. Piquet

    19. Sutil

    20. Kovalainen

  • Christine26/03/2009 at 12:26

Since when can drop.io update itself?

There was an update a few weeks back, so it updates in realtime. They also introduced the chat, but I don't think we were big fans of that.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/03/2009 at 12:27

Channel 4 F1 story had Newey saying it's the biggest rule changes since 1998 or even 1983, then DC talked for a bit, then Newey talked us through some of the new rules, then there was a small bit about KERS, Brawn GP's diffuser reportedly giving them 5 tenths a lap and Lewis saying he'd consider an offer from a rival team because the aero on the McLaren is so poor.

  • Amy26/03/2009 at 12:27

    20. Kovalainen

    :(

One day I want to be able to say "I TOLD YOU SO" about Heikki. Not sure it's going to happen, but he's staying in my fantasy racers team!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/03/2009 at 12:40

Lewis saying he’d consider an offer from a rival team because the aero on the McLaren is so poor.

You've just GMM-washed the story there. He said he'd be flattered by an offer but wouldn't consider it as he wants to stay at McMerc.

  • me26/03/2009 at 12:40

    Not actually what he said.

  • Scott Woodwiss26/03/2009 at 12:51

Just read over at RealBrawnGP.com forums that, despite it being a GMM story so don't have a go at me about that, the FIA have declared the diffusers on the Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota cars legal.

yeah. the teams will now appeal that decision and f1 will head to paris in a month or so.

they also have the ability to protest the results too.

  • chris evans26/03/2009 at 12:56

Also read on that thread that Charlie Whiting apparently flew into Barcelona and declared them legal himself. So if that’s true then why is this all still going on?

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 12:56

They had to do it before the weekend began. The Court of Appeal, on the other hand, cannot resolve it until after Sepang at the earliest.

  • me26/03/2009 at 12:56

Also read on that thread that Charlie Whiting apparently flew into Barcelona and declared them legal himself. So if that’s true then why is this all still going on?

he did. on the last day of testing.

it's going on because a courtroom really is the only option available to the teams to get clarification. and also because f1 is a hotbed of politics as ever.

In other words, if you can't beat them, join them. If you can't join them, protest them. :D

  • me26/03/2009 at 12:59

JUST SHUT UP ABOUT BLIMMIN’ DIFFUSERS AND GET ON WITH RACING!!!

that's one way of looking at it. here's another...

in 2007 there was no talk of protests in melbourne, and then it turned out ferrari had an illegal floor later in the year. ferrari kept the win due to a lack of protesting.

much better that this is all out in the open from day one if you ask me.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)26/03/2009 at 13:01

I am loving this technical argument because if it turns out that Newey could have made a diffuser like on Brawn but didn't and designed a suspension that couldn't be adapted to it, then he really has missed a golden opportunity!

I just done my annual thing of creating a folder specifically for pics from the upcoming season and put 10 or so in it for now. I do the same for winter testing and have done since 2006 : P

    Anyone else do similar things? {Comment #5}

I tend to leave my F1 files in a bit of a mess. The only proper organisation is in the stuff I need to admin/co-admin fora (which is in one folder per forum), the podcasts I have (which are lumped together in a folder) and pictures (in another forum). Occasionally I've found stray F1 files on the wrong hard drive...

  • Alianora La Canta26/03/2009 at 13:19

    Oh happy day!

Autosport are reporting that BMW lost their protest through not filing the form in time and Ferrari, Renault and Red Bull lost theirs because the stewards thought that Brawn, Williams and Toyota were in the right.

OK, there's still the possibility of an appeal, but for now let's just enjoy having the immediate threat over and done with :)

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 13:19

don't know, but we do know that toyota have never taken a single risk since entering formula 1.

    also in that article:

The teams have said they will appeal, they can also appeal the results of the race too. So lots of shouting and complaining, and the the FIA will appeal their own appeal of the appeal.

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 13:47

Keith’s got it horribly wrong, I think :(

Why so? I do think Lewis said more than what he really needed to say. It really depends on what they asked him.

    How about:

"I haven't had offers from other teams and I am not talking to anyone but I would listen to an offer if someone asked," he said. "It would be a compliment and it would be silly if I did not."

Being turned into an article called Hamilton rocks McLaren with admission he could leave? That's just sensationalist reporting to shift newspapers!

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 13:49

saying it is different from filing it. if there's nothing filed by the deadline (which should be anytime now), then it all ends here.

No, he's quoting the Guardian. The key is that the story is sensationalist because it contains a quote from Lewis that has been blown out of proportion, which is clear to see if the article is read properly. See my reply below for the quote and the link...

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 13:52

until sunday, and then the next race…

they have to appeal this ruling. if they don't appeal this ruling, an appeal on sunday would be thrown out on the grounds that the diffusers were legal - which in turn is based on today's ruling.

    ROFL! :D

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 13:58

“Virgin linked to Brawn again, but as a sponsor? We’ll find out in a few hours…”

Ed Gorman has asked Bernie, who seems to have confirmed it. We'll find out in the morning.

  • me26/03/2009 at 13:59

But his headline is Lewis Hamilton in publicity storm over ‘McLaren quit’ remarks - that’s just as bad as the original Guardian story I think…

what's the SEO ranking for "lewis hamilton", "mclaren" and "quit", i wonder?

  • Lukeh26/03/2009 at 13:59

In other Brawn news - Virgin is back!

Gonna wait for official confirmation till I fully believe it..

  • Mattw26/03/2009 at 13:59

Wow - that was a quick lap time by the stewards - they look in good form this weekend.

True, but it's disingenious to have that as the headline of the blog post because it's designed to be sensationalist. That's just my personal pet hate TBH.

can someone please explain the luminous yellow then? because button's changed his helmet and i can't see any link between that colour and virgin?

Red (or rather, a luminous yellow) herring?

No idea mate, I just had a gut feeling Virgin would end up being a sponsor :-)

agreed, and you'll find that it encourages sensationalist commenting too.

if you write a headline like that, you're asking for a certain response. at some point the comments will inevitably turn into a pro/anti lewis slanging match.

4 newspapers ran it this morning... I would say it's less bad than what any of them said. But it may still have been over the top.

On reflection, I would agree - but it's the headline that does it, and also people may not read the article 4 or 5 times before commenting and therefore view the article as a whole as sensationalist.

    sorry, not what i meant.

i meant... i didn't go look through the comments to see what they were like before criticising them. i just figured that if you write a title like that, i'd expect a certain kind of response.

  • Flibster26/03/2009 at 14:34

    wow, that sounds brilliant!

It's a pain in the bum to set up. First of getting in touch with the chap who is looking after the cars at the moment is hard - need to know what could be available or made available.

As it's his personal collection though I need to ask him what he wants to get ready - there may be a single seater or two there.

  • Flibster26/03/2009 at 14:34

Good point - but will future Blu-Ray players be able to read HD-DVDs?

No. They are still producing HD-DVD/Bluray combo drives for PC's, but the advantage is I can copy the HD-DVD files to the server and then convert to bluray format and in the future burn them to bluray. :D

Given enough time and patience, any format can be converted. You could make DVD's of Inside Track for example...

Bernie's getting angry now, swearing about Briatore and Dennis from earlier in the week

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73919

so it seems FOTA are saying now that all the teams supported what was said in the meeting, not just Renault and McLaren who were being reported with thretening to leave. The more FOTA get involved with things, the more they seem to annoy Bernie which now shows from his lovely use of the english language when describing their threat..

actually, maybe they are 22 and 23, because they were added as a new team before honda were removed?

although that would make the official entry list complete bunkum.

so what’s the point of sending cars to be looked at on thursday if you can go and change the car afterwards?

I think McLaren have had it looked at and that the other teams didn't know to protest about it. McLaren had something very Brawn-esque in testing, only with the upper deck of the diffuser blanked-off.

  • Maverick26/03/2009 at 15:32

Brawn are 22 and 23 now as they've changed the list yet again. Force India got upset that 20 and 21 were taken away from them after doing all their publicity stuff with those numbers, and so there is no 18 and 19 (which are never to be used again in memory of the team that was Super Aguri, perhaps.)

White, day-glo yellow stripes, green stripes on the tyres... what this car needs now is a big splash of red.

If Brawn keep finding sponsors at this rate they should be challenging Renault for ugliest livery by Malaysia.

    http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2009/03/pretend-youre-i.html

I think it was mentioned yesterday

I'm getting rather anxious now, especially after going on the BBC website to see 9 hours left until FP1. Oh god oh god oh god.

  • Flibster26/03/2009 at 16:26

Whoop! My new media server lives. :D

All content copied across and so much free space. I don't know what to do with it all.

Scary - just turned off my old media server for the first time in 197 days 13 hours and 7 minutes. Not bad for a Server 2003 box that was built out of spare parts.

Wasn't meant to use it until we move into the house, but sod it. The other half will never know and it saves me having to copy more data across at a later date.

    #4 - me said:

Two reserve drivers were revealed yesterday, with DC signed up for RBR and STR until poor Hartley can get his superlicence sorted. Meanwhile, Davidson will be the backup for Brawn GP. The BBC are losing their drivers all over the place, aren’t they?

hehe. imagine if both get called up…

Race commentary from the cockpit? Sure would be a level up of that the BBC did with "Motormouth", let alone ITV...

Autosport have just reported Virgin are to Sponser…. the BrawnGP team, does that mean F1 if fixed as far as Richard Bransons comments at the time of the speculated buying of the Honda team?

Sorry if I'm being synical - but Branson has seen the car's pace in testing... and NOW he is keen?

He also realises that if the cars are at the front of the grid, then they will be in the media spotlight bigtime this weekend, so he is flying over special to slap a Virgin sticker in the side?

    Go Ross.

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2009 at 17:58

does that mean F1 if fixed as far as Richard Bransons comments at the time of the speculated buying of the Honda team?

if this is fixed then i think we need to have a nice little chat with Mr Branson....

  • Rob26/03/2009 at 18:13

Sorry if I’m being synical - but Branson has seen the car’s pace in testing… and NOW he is keen?

It looks like he's got himself quite a good deal to me. He will get all the virgin branding on the car but none of the risks of actually owning a team.

Tony Jardine was just on Irish radio (!) and he says Lewis Hamilton could have a performance-related contract clause. Also, rumours of him being unhappy? That's not hard to believe.

  • Lukeh26/03/2009 at 19:00

Tony Jardine was just on Irish radio (!) and he says Lewis Hamilton could have a performance-related contract clause. Also, rumours of him being unhappy? That’s not hard to believe.

I still don't think he's unhappy. Just seems like a small wrongly worded bit of PR speak has blown into a silly proportion saying he wants to go.

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2009 at 19:00

Tony Jardine was just on Irish radio (!) and he says Lewis Hamilton could have a performance-related contract clause. Also, rumours of him being unhappy? That’s not hard to believe.

performance clause likes that are relative to the overall pace of hte car...unless a team wants a driver gone!!

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 19:01

Tony Jardine was just on Irish radio (!) and he says Lewis Hamilton could have a performance-related contract clause. Also, rumours of him being unhappy? That’s not hard to believe.

I don't doubt he has a performance related contract. More points/wins = more money

  • Joe26/03/2009 at 19:01

I don't think he wants to go, that's daft. I do however think he's unhappy with the car, but that's no tantrum, that's just frustration.

  • Flibster26/03/2009 at 19:02

Tony Jardine was just on Irish radio (!) and he says Lewis Hamilton could have a performance-related contract clause. Also, rumours of him being unhappy? That’s not hard to believe.

If I was driving for a top team, I'd certainly have one.

But if he was to leave at the end of the year, who could he go to? I have difficulty seeing where else he could go with a chance of winning races.

BMW wont touch him as he's a McLaren Mercedes pupil

    Renault... well.... :D

    Ferrari? Nope

Brawn? Possibility - but what is the chances of them being at the top of the field next year with a massively reduced development budget this year?

  • RG26/03/2009 at 19:02

unless a team wants a driver gone!!

Wouldn't it just be easier for a team to say

    'We don't like you, cheerio'

and let the lawyers sort the rest out?

  • Dirty Scarab26/03/2009 at 19:03

They’ll be some streams people are linking too at the sessions.

    Cool.

So some linkies to any streams that people come across would be awesome :) I assume it'll be on Justin.tv somewhere...

    Pretty please :)

  • Maverick26/03/2009 at 19:05

Just seems like a small wrongly worded bit of PR speak has blown into a silly proportion saying he wants to go.

There could be another motive - it must have Alonso worried that Ferrari are now after Hamilton. Hamilton could just be laughing his head off at all the fuss.

interesting thing to note (if you're geek)...

mclaren appear to have arrived in melbourne with the same diffuser that they covered in flow-vis paint last week in testing. assuming they have no plans racing a car that's less than immaculate (this is ron we're talking about), expect this multicoloured diffuser to change significantly today:

  • Dirty Scarab26/03/2009 at 19:11

Hamilton could just be laughing his head off at all the fuss.

I think he might be. I suppose there's no surprise that there is wild speculation about driver changes already and we're nowhere near the silly season yet...

I don't even read these sorts of stories anymore. Maybe if someone reports that Alonso's going to Ferrari and it actually happens then I'll pay attention...

  • Dirty Scarab26/03/2009 at 19:13

Interesting. Yep, you can definitely make out the green bits.

Here's hoping it has a nice v shape in the middle of it in FP1.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 19:13

    Come on, per-leeeease!

  • me26/03/2009 at 19:14

Interesting. Yep, you can definitely make out the green bits.

Here’s hoping it has a nice v shape in the middle of it in FP1.

i think the v-shape may require significant bodywork changes, it could easily match what toyota have though.

  • Dank26/03/2009 at 19:37

Dank's interesting thingy-me-bob of the day (from grandprix.com):

What is interesting is that the idea (for the diffuser) came last year from Super Aguri Racing. When that team shut down, its aerodynamics went to work at Honda where they concentrated on the 2009 car, while the regular aero crew tried to develop the old Honda chassis. One of the aerodynamists went instead to Toyota where a slightyly different system was developed.

F1 is a small world after all.

OK, so the Danish TV will be showing all the sessions live, and has a FIVE HOUR buildup to the GP with highlights from 1989, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2000!!!

There's just one catch. Can you imagine Kimi Raikkonen as a commentator? Well you don't have to - just watch it in Danish!

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 20:36

Does anyone sell edible hats? Cos I bet they could make a killing.

Add that to the inventions list along with Aerospace Blu Tac

Oh and no-one at Sidepodcast Towers should look at page 5 of Autosport. If you had mixer envy when you saw Leo's little toy this could push over the edge.

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 20:38

Also read on that thread that Charlie Whiting apparently flew into Barcelona and declared them legal himself. So if that’s true then why is this all still going on?

Cos Charlie will change his mind as soon as Donnelly tells him what Max wants him to do.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 20:40

On the BBC Red Buttonn last night was the 1994 Adelaide GP, that of the Hill vs Schuey incident

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 20:45

But his headline is Lewis Hamilton in publicity storm over ‘McLaren quit’ remarks/em> - that’s just as bad as the original Guardian story I think…

Lewis also re-iterated in the interview that he would like to stay with McLaren for his whole career. Surprising no-one is using that as a headline.

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 20:46

They haven’t scored at all, and they’re going to be called Virgin BrawnGP?

I can't imagine Branson asked Button to take th Union Jack off his helmet so their must be another bigger sponsor.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 20:47

Lewis also re-iterated in the interview that he would like to stay with McLaren for his whole career. Surprising no-one is using that as a headline.

At least someone spoke to the driver this time!

    i think so :)

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 20:59

Alex Wurz is no longer Brawn’s reserve driver as they can’t afford him?! So they went with Anthony Davidson - is he really that much cheaper?

I would have thought Davidson would be about a tenth of Wurz's cost.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 21:00

I would have thought Davidson would be about a tenth of Wurz’s cost.

If not just for free publicity

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 21:05

Sorry if I’m being synical - but Branson has seen the car’s pace in testing… and NOW he is keen?

He also realises that if the cars are at the front of the grid, then they will be in the media spotlight bigtime this weekend, so he is flying over special to slap a Virgin sticker in the side?

That is how he operates. He has spotted an opportunity to get a good return on cheap sponsorship. He didn't get involved in the space business till it was a certainty that Burt Rutan's team was a certainty to win the X Prize. He turned up stuck some Virgin logos on it and Virgin Galactic was born. Branson is a very smart operator.

  • RG26/03/2009 at 21:06

Forget to say it when I came on, happy birthday Alianora.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 21:06

I bet Branson uses Virgin Media's broadband campaign with some sort of "fast" F1 connotation

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 21:07

Tony Jardine was just on Irish radio (!) and he says Lewis Hamilton could have a performance-related contract clause. Also, rumours of him being unhappy? That’s not hard to believe.

Most drivers and teams have performance related clauses.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 21:08

Forget to say it when I came on, happy birthday Alianora.

    Ooh, really?

    Happy Burpday Alia!

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 21:08

Wouldn’t it just be easier for a team to say

Not if he has two years left on his contract. If Ferrari had done that to Kimi at the end of last season they would have to have paid him two years salary and would have been very lucky to get off that light.

  • RG26/03/2009 at 21:10

    Ooh, really?

If you bothered to check the Birthdays page on the wiki.

Or seen Mr and Mrs C comments at the top of the lclt ;)

Just listening to 5Live's preview, what does everything think of the cars now we've had the new shape around for a few months now?

I'm really used to them now, the rear wing doesn't stand out as much as when we first saw them and the back of the cars look so much nicer without the crazy winglets pointing every direction under the sun. David Croft was just saying how its a case of looking at them in shock at first but soon getting used to them and I definitely agree there.

  • RG26/03/2009 at 21:46

I’m really used to them now, the rear wing doesn’t stand out as much as when we first saw them and the back of the cars look so much nicer without the crazy winglets pointing every direction under the sun. David Croft was just saying how its a case of looking at them in shock at first but soon getting used to them and I definitely agree there.

Same, but I still think they're going to look very odd when they all line up on the grid.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 21:47

Wooo!! Not going to sleep earlier tonight! :P

Wow, did you get any insulin with that lot?

  • Lukeh26/03/2009 at 21:47

Ok….so i know that i fall asleep very easily……so….to combat this i’ve just been to morrisons…..

That's quite a stash! I'll be buying all my 'wake up damnit' stuff tomorrow during work on my lunch. Highlight of my day aisdes from F1 ;)

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 21:48

I plan on getting drunk with a mate and staying up for quali, sleeping in really late on Sat and then going straight through to the chequered flag

  • Vinnchan26/03/2009 at 21:49

I'm sure there's somewhere on the site that tells me, but since we're trying too get a lot of comments in, is there something I have to do to get into the live commenting?

It's what you're doing now. At some point there'll be a thread on the home page for the practice, I'd imagine

A most likely an embedded video for whatever session is going on

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 21:52

The Korean GP is definitely going to happen. They have a logo. I think I will set up a logo design company. It is clearly the future of F1 to produce logos.

We were talking about that earlier. I'm just going to submit a logo instead of a CV in future

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 21:55

We were talking about that earlier. I’m just going to submit a logo instead of a CV in future

I scanned all the hundreds of comments I missed earlier. I guess the logo didn't register with me. Surprising since I get so excited about logos. Maybe I need a personal logo.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 21:58

It's going to be roughtly 2/3 of the price of the Evora.

Battery packs can apparently be changed in 8 minutes and it can charge on good old, proper 230v in 45 minutes...

No - mustn't go over to the dark side....

  • Selidor26/03/2009 at 22:38

And I still think it would be a specific Virgin brand than just the group as a whole, Dont they have a domestic australian airway - Virgin Blue?

  • glennjimin26/03/2009 at 22:39

That yellow and red look so bad together but I actually quite like that livery :S

I'm not really a fan of the combination myself but it features in most of Virgins logo's and isn't dissimilar to their trains. There probably wont be so much red in the real thing as Virgin isn't going to be the title sponsor anyway.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 22:40

And I still think it would be a specific Virgin brand than just the group as a whole, Dont they have a domestic australian airway - Virgin Blue?

Is Virgin Media international or just a British thing?

    Just British I think

Globally, it's gotta be Virgin Atlantic or Galactic

    Thank you RG.

  • Bassano Clapper26/03/2009 at 22:43

I know what I want to see on the side of Brawn GP

Would that make it scotch versus vodka for the championship? (Do any other teams have alcoholic sponsors?)

  • glennjimin26/03/2009 at 23:15

I know what I want to see on the side of Brawn GP

That would be one way to get Kimi to away from Ferrari :D

  • Steven Roy26/03/2009 at 23:16

Would that make it scotch versus vodka for the championship? (Do any other teams have alcoholic sponsors?)

McLaren have Johnny Walker and previously had a vodka sponsor.

  • Rob26/03/2009 at 23:17

You may get Brawn and red bull teaming up to form red square...

  • Vinnchan26/03/2009 at 23:19

You may get Brawn and red bull teaming up to form red square…

That is a team I FULLY support. Especially since that's the team that's going to help me actually stay awake for the races.

  • Flibster26/03/2009 at 23:23

Should have the 5Live F1 Preview show uploaded to Drop.io soon. :D

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2009 at 23:23

ok....so your at an F1 press conference...you get 1 question to bernie, and 1 question to max....you can ask anything, but only 1 question to each...what do you ask....

  • Flibster26/03/2009 at 23:25

Max: Was all the *ahem* exposure worth the 2 and a half grand?

Bernie: Why didn't you get rid of Thwax Mosley when you had the chance?!

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2009 at 23:26

Bernie: Why didn’t you get rid of Thwax Mosley when you had the chance?!

ok….so your at an F1 press conference…you get 1 question to bernie, and 1 question to max….you can ask anything, but only 1 question to each…what do you ask….

    Max: Daddy or chips?

    Bernie: Daddy or chips?

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2009 at 23:27

    Mine would be....

"Max, you seem to be doing a great job of annoying everyone and overstaying your welcome whilst Bernie, you seem to be doing an amazing job of thinking up crackpot schemes to get FOM more money, i get 1 question so my question is this.....can we have our sport back please?"

  • Andy Taylor26/03/2009 at 23:27

    Max: Daddy or chips?

    Bernie: Daddy or chips?

You know I just had the same thought. Wow.

  • Dank26/03/2009 at 23:29

You know I just had the same thought. Wow.

Either we're predictable or just completely AMAZING. I'll side with the latter :-)

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 23:31

With 2 hours to go, how many comments do we have in total, Mr C?

Bernie is too busy to attend the openning race in Australia - I'm sorry to hear that.

My question to Bernie: Tell us what will it take to get F1 back in north-america?

I'd give my question to Max away to Joe Saward.

  • Jon Waldock26/03/2009 at 23:42

what i meant to do was http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/aus-3459-jpg

  • Journeyer26/03/2009 at 23:46

My question to Bernie: Tell us what will it take to get F1 back in north-america?

He'll tell you it's to get the teams to do it for him, or something to that effect. He blames them, after all. ;)

I have just realised how utterly unrealistic Star Wars is. When did Capt Kirk/Picard/Janeway ever ask the computer to do anything only to be told it needed to install a Java update. Then when they agreed they had to read the license first. Then decide whether or not they wanted a Yahoo toolbar. Then they had to shut down the software controlling the warp engine before the update could be installed. Then with the Klingons/Romulans/Borg closing in the computer says it has to shut down engines, life support, weapons so that it can re-boot itself.

the car's ecu died today, and when it rebooted itself it said there was no fuel in the car. i was 99% confident there was, but have you any idea how hard it is to drive past a petrol station when your car insists it's out of fuel?

    ECU's - always entertaining. :D

Try driving a car with an incorrect ECU from another model in the range. Black smoke, jerkyness, pops, bangs.. :D

Thank you to everyone who wished me happy birthday.

Class was a bit scrappy, but the lasagne and chocolate cake afterwards were great. Even if I only got 100 minutes of sleep before the serious business of F1 began...
