Oh, hello. It would appear we have reached Friday again which means another Friday, another week sorted. Good times ahead as the weekend approaches I'm sure and with an absolute myriad of sport to choose from, how can we complain? Yes, folks, get the strawberries and cream out and let's enjoy this Friday first! I'm actually a little nervous today as I'll be picking up my university results and finding out if I'm graduating or not, so if I could get you to keep your fingers crossed that would be great! My present back to you lovely readers re the following bullet points that withhold many awesome things to discuss:

  • After a quite exceptional race in Canada and the highs of Montreal (welcome back!!) we return to the... sigh... incredibly unexceptional levels of Valencia's street 'circuit', or as I prefer it, the Bernie Ecclestone Dockland Experience. You know I find a circuit dull if Rubens can manage to win and do his epic podium dance in Valencia and it still be very meh to myself at least. But we are Formula 1 fans - we are used to silly times so I hope you still join us in the comments for FP1 and FP2 later today so we can be look at Valencia's awesome green building, as photographed by lou in harmony and all agree that naming two corners has made a huge difference to Valencia. At least there is one bit of awesome news - this weekend's driver steward will be Heinz Harald Frentzen!! He was my choice of driver when I wasn't Rubens on Formula 1 '97. Gotta love that Jordan.
  • I have promised not to talk too much about the World Cup but I got introduced to the fantastic David Baddiel and Frank Skinner podcast last night and I've spent a while catching up on them. They are very, very funny but the reason I got told them was because I mentioned how much I missed the Baddiel and Skinner Fantasy Football shows that took place in the 90's and mid 00's. Fantastic shows they were and so very funny, so if you remember them and liked the shows definitely check that podcast out! The podcast does come with an Explicit Language warning so it would be recommended to make sure of this before in case it offends anyone.
  • Yesterday saw the release of the new iPhone 4 within the UK and it was evident how much people wanted it - I myself saw queues at 8am in our city centre and still queuing when I was on my lunch at 12 noon. Madness! TouchGen have analysed the new iPhone from a gaming perspective and given their verdict on the new Apple release. If you've managed to get your hands on the new iPhone why not celebrate by looking at some recommendations for games I have for you! There we go, a bit of something for everyone I reckon! Lot's of apps are currently being updated by their developers for iOS4 support so keep an eye out for them. Finally, you may have heard of a certain Facebook game known as Farmville... yes, yes, I know. But if you love Farmville and have an iPhone or iPod Touch, then you might like what got released yesterday for free...
  • And now a final round up of this, that and everything worth chatting about. Make sure that you guys give Leigh O'Gorman's fantastic guest post a gander as he talks about the former Montjuïc Circuit that used to sit in the F1 calendar as the Spanish GP- it's a fascinating read. The little video included as well I really loved. Today is also the birthday of the very much loved British driver Johnny Herbert, so yay for Johnny Herbert! Surely I can't be the only person that would love to see him on the BBCF1 team?

I think that's enough for one day, ladies and gentlemen. Remember there's plenty of World Cup action and Wimbledon too so there's plenty to keep us all amused. Of course, I couldn't go today without mentioning this - the Goodwood Festival of Speed starts in just 7 days! Yeeeeeeeeeehawww!! I know there are plenty within the Sidepodcast family that are going to be there whether it be one, two or all three days and I'll be there myself so I'll hope to see you guys if you're going! Plus you could always follow Goodwood on Twitter to get the latest news as we lead up go the awesomeness that it is. But for now, I bid you farewell, and I shall see you guys in the comments in which good times shall be had for all.

    Not good..

Its about 22 here I think, and feels warmer, perfect for relaxing outside somewhere but a little bit oppressive indoors. A breeze has picked up though so that's nice.

I was down there summer 2006 and they had staff literally throwing bottled water onto the trains when they stopped at each station. Ridiculous they can't sort something out.

  • Amy25/06/2010 at 10:06

But as a tourist you've got to use the tube in London at least once, it's the tube! Its also usually the easiest way to get around.

  • Amy25/06/2010 at 10:11

But as a tourist you've got to use the tube in London at least once, it's the tube! Its also usually the easiest way to get around.

I already have my Oyster card :D

Plus I'm quite sure your public transport comes more than once every 20 minutes at peak times which is enough to make me love it.

Yeah :) I love the tube. It's any longer distance proper trains that you need to watch out for really. They do what they want.

  • Alison25/06/2010 at 10:12

Interestingly, when I moved to London a couple of years ago, I usedto walk around the city sometimes (when the weather was nice) and would occasionally look for directions. Rarely have I ever met anyone in London who knew walking directions anywhere - just total unknown above ground...

    (potentially also being mean people)

I already have my Oyster card :D

Plus I'm quite sure your public transport comes more than once every 20 minutes at peak times which is enough to make me love it.

Yeah :) I love the tube. It's any longer distance proper trains that you need to watch out for really. They do what they want.

trains suck. i moved cities to avoid using them!

It's not the act that I am shocked by (at all), but the fact the guy has died.

It is easy to look at the tube map and spend 20 mins doing that, and not realise the place you're going is 20 mins away on foot.

See Alex's Go For Odd video!

I always try and walk when I'm in London, I make sure I've got a map with me. There's so much to see and I don't like the tube. It really depends on where you want to get to.

He said they bought the equipment for 13" tyres especially because they don't make them for road cars any more, and that they'd be looking to move to larger rims for 2013.

He was asked about capacity and I found this interesting - I wonder what happens if/when the economy improves?

"Back in 2007, for different reasons, we decided to move production of racing tyres to a new factory that we build up in Turkey. The decision was made to be more competitive, to have new machines and so on. Then the [financial] crisis came, and our expectations in terms of production volumes were halved, because clearly worldwide 2009 and even 2010 have not been fantastic seasons in terms of selling racing tyres. There are fewer racing cars around. So let me put it in an industrial way - we have extra capacity available for racing tyres."

mum has them on her car and they really do make a difference. She's also had like a tint thing put on her mirrors so when someone is behind her with those lights she can see.

... that could be cause Honda like to do funky things with mirrors and things though..

  • Jon Waldock25/06/2010 at 14:53

What?? You've never had leaves sucked into the ventilation in your car? I think it's very common.

mum has them on her car and they really do make a difference. She's also had like a tint thing put on her mirrors so when someone is behind her with those lights she can see.

You might be able to see more but that's not going to help you when another car smacks into you because you've blinded them....

    their fault though :)

  • lou25/06/2010 at 14:56

Thats all well and good for her, but no-one else can see when she's around.

i think the idea is that in the future all cars will have them.. or at least the tint thing to make sure others can see. Problem with the car industry is that something can't be brought out all at the same time because of cost and everyone has different ages of car. I'm willing to bet in the next 5-10 years they become a standard on all new cars...

What about all the old cars?

they won't be around forever... plus if you ever need a replacement windscreen you could get one with a tint.. or new mirrors with the tint... there are/will be options. The idea is that they make the roads safer, if it bothers you that much go into your local garage or dealer and inquire about what you can do.

  • Pat W25/06/2010 at 15:02

Also on rural roads where it's very dark and someone comes round a corner with them on. You can't see ANYTHING

I hate that. Slowing down often isn't enough. I don't like aiming for gaps I can't see.

  • lou25/06/2010 at 15:02

its not just 'a light' its so dangerous on motorways at night when they're the only lights around

Also on rural roads where it's very dark and someone comes round a corner with them on. You can't see ANYTHING

that happens when people forget to dip their usual lights though. that can't be helped..

  • Steven Roy25/06/2010 at 15:02

That's not just those lights though.

We're talking about the really bright ones, not the slightly brighter ones

Many years ago before those were even dreamt of I was in a car when a Lancia with twin head lights shot past us. When our eyes started working again there was a cow in front of us. It was only they for half a second before we hit it and launched it.

  • Alison25/06/2010 at 15:02

they won't be around forever... plus if you ever need a replacement windscreen you could get one with a tint.. or new mirrors with the tint... there are/will be options. The idea is that they make the roads safer, if it bothers you that much go into your local garage or dealer and inquire about what you can do.

I'm sure you could get some kind of film applied to the inside of your windscreen at some point.

  • Alianora La Canta25/06/2010 at 15:03

    or walk. {Comment #205}

As long as it's not at night in a semi-rural or rural area, in which case they can dazzle you anyway. Most of us can't justify tinted glasses for night walking.

  • lou25/06/2010 at 15:03

? i didn't realise there were 3 types?.. i thought it was the normal yellowy light and the brighter bluer/ whiter one?..

Walking on a rural road at night is basically suicide though. There are so many deaths. Pedestrians don't realise they're basically invisible until you're right on top of them unless they're wearing proper reflective clothing.

No, as long as you got them set as they're meant to be and not be an idiot with them.

That only works if you know it's coming before it arrives - and the engine noise won't tell you if it has those headlights fitted or not!

Trouble is rural roads are rarely straight enough for the type of headlight to make any difference

that's not entirely true though. We live in the country and it's got to the stage where mum feels uncomfortable driving at night when not in her car, because the lights enable her to see much more clearly. It's safer for the animals too as they are much easier to see.

What people feel comfortable with and what gives them more safety info is not necessarily the same thing. A lot of people will tell you they feel they are safer in total darkness than in partial darkness but that is only because in total darkness they can't see the things that are outside their headlight area so they don't think about them

thats fine when she's on her own, but not if she's blinding other people when shes sitting behind them (im not saying she does, but alot of people with hi-intensity headlights have no idea the effect they have on other car users)

  • Pat W25/06/2010 at 15:22

The driving I like most is at night, no other traffic, full beams on. Partly because you can see what's coming the other way a heck of a lot earlier when they dip their lights. But if when they've dipped you get blinded, not so much fun..

  • Steven Roy25/06/2010 at 15:23

My point is to question whether the extra that she is seeing is relevant to safety or not. Some people like to drive with fog lights on because they think they can see more but in reality they are only lighting the verge on their left in an area that is way too close to their vehicle for them to react to anything but it fills in a dark spot in their normal headlight pattern so they feel less comfortable without it but it has no effect at all on their safety.

Anything where people lose something that they are used to makes them feel uncomfortable. So if someone gets into a car where the headlights are noticeably less bright than they are used to they are going to feel uncomfortable but it doesn't necessarily mean they are less safe. They may be less safe but they may not

i don't like her because she hates coldplay, but coldplay love her... and they even changed the lyrics for one of their songs at a gig for her.. and she openly hates them.. yet goes to their gigs for free

Probably not. Vijay's been using that analogy since the 2008 launch at least!

  • lou25/06/2010 at 19:24

I thought she was a huge massive fan, she seems to be when I hear her talking of them

she's one of those people who only like bands if they aren't well known..

problem is she talks about them lots on the radio and they become well known... then she hates them.. but will happily claim she was one of the first to 'discover' them..

she was mean about them on buzzcocks.. David Tennant had to stand up for them :)

  • Lukeh25/06/2010 at 19:24

Sort it out, you have a national duty :)

    :D

doesn't give a good image of Wales though. 'Oh yeah he's from one of the most popular welsh bands of all time but he tends to dress up like a woman, noone can understand what he;s saying half the time and he seems to hate everyone. on the plus side, he's the cousin of my friend'

Oops, he does have a tremendous line in that. A whole line of goodiness.

Although to be fair on manics' newest album he sings a song written by ritchie and his inability to sing actually makes the song better because it makes it more raw...

To be honest, there's no real point in me playing!! I'm too emotional about it, rather than trying to actually make a sensible prediction. The only time I was happy with the result was Bahrain :D

technically, he has.. cause one of Hamilton's wins was technically only because the red bulls crashed into each other. Jenson's wins are by talent and the fact he's a genius ;)

i thought there was a bit of a stunned silence...!

I had a weird conversation along these lines with a girl who works for me the other day. She kept saying she didn't want to get married because she wanted to do x y and z. I was like why would you marry someone that stopped you doing cool things?!

no idea. i've yet to figure out why people think it's a big thing. someone the other day was spending 20k on a wedding. 20 thousand on a single day?

  • startledbunny25/06/2010 at 22:34

no that is true.. but i don't want to get married this young thanks ;)

i have no problem getting married, and i know it wont stop me doing anything i want to do.. but at 18?.. no thanks. It's not that i have anything major about it, i think it's cause i see it as being a bit too young for me.

hehe but i do love you lukeh :)

  • lou25/06/2010 at 22:48

But if you don't, you should tell your university and they help you do something else.

yeah exactly. :) i was chatting to my old photography tutor yesterday and she knows alot about UCA courses and she suggested if i hate the photography course there is a UCA course at a different campus which is a more general media course which would be be 1) very easy to swap to (her friend did) and 2) would equally suit me and my needs.

i think it's safe to say i've kinda thought the 'what if i hate it?' question through..

  • RocketRedhead25/06/2010 at 22:50

i like the tube as long as it's not packed - although when you're heavily pregnant people give up their seats which is nice - went to see the hammers when heavily pregnant with edward

Eurgh. Someone gave me their seat when I was 16 because they thought I was expecting. I must have cried for about a month.

  • Lukeh25/06/2010 at 22:56

I apologise if this offends any drivers in London but... you're all mental. I have nearly gotten run over sooo many times.

ah i can imagine driving into london is awful! I'll go on the tube when it's busy.. i'm much better than i used to be, and if i'm with lukeh it's much easier. but i really hate it, it's like cramped spaces AND being underground *shudders*

  • startledbunny25/06/2010 at 22:59

some advice i would give to pregnant women trying to jump the queue at the station after the footie, ask a policeman - as policewomen are mean

you do know that pregnant women are allowed to use their helmet for certain things?
