The bracing wind in Germany affects some more than others
Hello lovely people, it is Monday and this is your daily for today. Doesn't Mark Webber look cold in that picture? The weather in Germany was a lot cooler than we were expecting, although the rain never came. Every time there is never a sign of rain, despite all weather forecasts saying there will be some, I swear off predicting the weather. But every time a race swings by, I start pondering what the weather will be again. It's addictive.
Next weekend is the Hungarian Grand Prix, back to back racing, and Luiz Razia has turned up a little bit early. He tweeted that he'd arrived at the airport last night:
Anyone in Budapest? Just arrives at airport, head to the hotel in 30min, it is raining a lot here and is not so warm! See ya chaps!
Another cold weekend! Will that favour Ferrari again? Is it too early to start predicting things?
Yes, yes it is. We still have the antics from the Nürburgring to ponder. If you need any recaps, we've got you covered here on Sidepodcast, and over on F1 Minute. Here are some links you may need:
Mr C wanted me to let you all know that the F1Minute app is available in 33 more countries than it was before. If you're in Iceland, you can buy it in your own store now. Fabulous.
Other race related things: Make sure you check out Lukeh's review. The good news is that Fernando Alonso had enough fuel in his car to get away with the post-race scrutineering, and Mark Webber was not penalised for his taxi-service. We managed to catch some great pictures on Posterous. Although there are good safety reasons why the FIA don't want to encourage such behaviour, it's always fun to see drivers do something a little out of the ordinary. Last race Alonso was running along to catch the driver's parade, this time he's hitching a lift on a Red Bull ride. What will he do next week?
In non-F1 bits and bobs, our podcasting hero Leo Laporte has moved to a new studio. After being tucked away at the TWiT cottage, he's now somewhere a little bigger. A sneak peek before they went live showed how shiny the new place is. Mmm, studio.
A while back Mr C and I were talking about the short web series Everything is a Remix, and that's become something of a oft-used phrase at Sidepodcast HQ these days. Part 3 is available to enjoy, with one final part to come soon. I also like they are encouraging remixing the videos, so that means remixing the work on remixes. All a bit meta, but very cool.
Finally, if you've got a spare few minutes, why not have a guess at these final movie scenes? Kottke blogged about it a while ago, and Mr C and I pooled our limited film knowledge to get 21 right. The answers are at the bottom of the page. Let us know how you get on.
Have a good day, keep it positive, and I'll see you in the comments!

I heard last night that yas are dropping gt1 & v8 supercars
I suspect this means there wont be a gp2 race at the begning of next year either.
Also they are resurfacing some of the track. The current material comes from the UK and isn't suited to the climate here
Again hearing talk of a new circuit to be built in the uae, possibly in the mountains
Shame - that leaves... not a huge amount of international competition then..?
Nope - it'll be at the end of the year like this year
Yas & bahrain have traditionally had 2 rounds
There's no GP2 Asia anymore
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/07/13/gp2-asia-swallowed-up-by-the-main-series/
Exactly, so no round at the start of the year.
I expect the season will be shortened at the track too.
Apparently they will be holding more drag racing, instead of circuit racing
Old news!
Not if they're supporting F1, they'll use the full circuit
More than likely
Didn't realise Rosberg starts his 100th GP this weekend. Jenson hitting 200 - Budapest will be milestone city
GT1 is struggling and V8s are off to America.
I gather from Autosport that SRO have most of the grid sorted - it might be tight though.

Last I heard, they were going to try and equalise three different classes..
Yep Gt1's with GT2's and GT3's
Heys,
Reading up the live race thread yesterday.....i'm confused though! A few people are mentioning Lewis slating his team after he was passed then repassed Webber immediately, I remember hearing him going on about tires at the point (ie he made the mistake in the chicance) but where's this bit about him slating the team? I didn't hear it...... very confused now!
lee's first post for autosport: http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3698/the-personalities-are-not-gone-from-f1/
similar to her posts for gpupdate except now you have to pay to read them :)
here: http://sidepodcast.com/post/germany-2011-race-highlights#data-12723
Ah thank you....that makes sense now. I was expecting some tirade against them.......phew...all is well.
In response to what he said I can understand it given the time of the race and the pressure. I'm sure we've heard Nando mention a few times in the past he's getting his head down and wants to keep chat to a minimum.
don't think anyone's criticising lewis, aside from the fact every time he makes a mistake it's someone else fault. that's not unusual in a driver, by any stretch.
It's never their faults! I was dead surprised during the Moto GP race to hear some rider say without being prompted it's his fault they're out the race (he fell off his bike)...
That'd admission of fault would you have so quickly out of F1 your feet wouldn't touch the ground
schumi has been brutally honest with himself this season, so some drivers can deal with it.
I suppose it's all he can do, I've never been a huge fan of his but i'm really keen to see him on a podium again soon. Too many mistakes not enough clean moves (for and against). I feel sorry for him that he's getting so much stick.
Did De Resta loose his wing again yesterday? I know he slipped back on Lap 1 but i'm stumped to remember where he ended up now.
incident wasn't shown: http://sidepodcast.com/post/germany-2011-race-highlights#data-12699
but don't think he had to pit for a new nose, only karun.
Phew that's good....was worried it was another race, another wing etc..
They never showed us what happened to Perez around lap 5-8...
Saw him drop 10 secs middle sector, then immediately pit....they mentioned it briefly but moved onto something else...
Was it just a spin and flat spotted tires etc? I get the feeling he had the same accident, Vettel and Schumi had at T10
that's all we heard too: http://sidepodcast.com/post/germany-2011-race-highlights#data-12710
terrible tv coverage this weekend.
You not enjoy it?..... Which aspects? I found the presenting a little down this week (what is it with them lot and the obession with Twitter and playing with iPads?!!) but didn't notice much untoward in the race coverage, except a few pitstops missing, was there something glaring obvious etc?
- obsession with replaying race starts the second that DRS is enabled and passing starts happening.
- no replays of missed incidents
- missed stops and stops that were covered missing info like stop time
- obsession with showing local drivers doing nothing
- very little Race Control information, investigations and suchlike.
oh yes.
Ah the replay thing was defo picked up my gf....
The instant replay with a camera angle seen only 5 secs prior, if they're going to show it again why not use a different angle!
My gripe with the actual race coverage feed is the layout of the timing tower....I use a 16:9 widescreen and i'm annoyed with having this timing tower running down virtually the middle of my screen...surely 4:3 tv's are out numbered over by 16:9's???
Kimi used to really hate that too.
yeah, he complained when going down a straight during practice. lewis mentioned it only after he lost a position. it sounded like an excuse, but then he got the place back anyhow.
btw, didn't lewis complain in silverstone that the team weren't giving him enough info over the radio?
#toughcrowd
Oooohh... who want a Monteiro sports watch? What?! No... Anyone..? Anyone.......? Anyone................?
:)
Different situation I think - not sure he was in a direct battle at the time
at silverstone he was defending from webber and here he was defending from webber?
Really? Don't remember it being during the battle, but then again...
at which race?
Y'know, the one with the boats..? I think it's called the Tour de France
i honsestly have no idea what you're talking about. but okay.
Aww, Sam set to go after Korea: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93365
Poor Sam.
Aye - he said it during FP2. I can't imagine him not having something lined up
Probably for the best.
;)
That was when he was defending from Massa I think, I think Webber had already got past him. Lewis was asking for info as he was being closed by Massa but had no idea where he was.
Bottom line is the engineers and drivers have a tough balancing act between distraction and providing the right info.
fair enough. i'll leave you to it.
Oh wait - this was when he was about out of fuel wasn't it?
At Silverstone yes.......yesterday from what I gather is he was telling the team to stop distracting him during a heated battle...
I think ideally drivers want contact kept to a minimum.....if you're fighting it out the last thing you want is people chewing your ear distracting you. Kinda seems double standards though when you're the one being chased and you're clamouring for info every second on the driver catching you..
So if in front shut up, if being caught don't stop sending the info....that's what I gather
I haven't visited Retronaut for a while and I'm catching up with RSS feeds whilst work is fairly quiet. I do love these 'out of time' shots. There's probably a straightforward explanation but it is good to dream. :)
Here's a boy texting... in 1911
http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/2011/07/boy-texting-in-1911/
He was running out of fuel then though, that info was more critical
Oopps, doohicky must have gotten stuck,
Mmmm, timetravel!

Of course.
I tried last night to find some positives.......all I could come up with is....'finished the race'
I think a one word report would be 'Overwhelmed'
I'll wave goodbye if I see him :)
Yes!

I won't actually talk to him though of course #shy

Ohhh Amy, if you haven't booked your air asia flight to where ever you may be of to next (long shot because i'm pretty sure as planning queen you will have) you could enter this;

Hi Lou,
I'm fine - what goes on?
nothing much in my life today. My friend's just gone home after a week so it's a little quiet around these parts.
HEY! They have terms and conditions now! :D
Aaaaahhhh... perhaps you should play some unreasonably loud music
;)
Reading some good comments on the net about Stefano and Martin Whitmarsh.....Stefano coming and saying he expects the Italian press to write rubbish but not the British press.
Seems he went up a great deal in other fans estimations saying that. .

Jake just tweeted highest German GP viewers since 1996
Good stuff, must've been helped by the Vettel, Schu effect
Jake and his Twitter though....I wonder if we're watching the forum or a Twitter advert at times.....the BBC are obssessed with them to the point of overkill
Doubt that had any effect on UK viewers tbh
Oh for UK viewers....well you didn't say that did you!
Context Ms O'Gorman..........context
Context Schmontext
That was quick - Ted is back this week
Eh? Thought he wouldn't be back til Spa...
wasn't he meant to be back after hungary? maybe he saw how much they missed him too.
Sweet talking your way out of it will not work.
Yay Ted's back......love it
they really did. Lee doing the news video after the race was just poor.
no more air Asia flights in my immediate future I'm afraid :)
ohhh :(
I am planning to buy some vitamins so I can win a trip to monza though :)
Love the move endings game... was slightly hampered by not having seen Moulan Rouge, Cry Baby or Inception, but I got Titanic without having seen that one. But the one I was most annoyed with was the Departed because I have seen that and I didn't get it. So I missed 4.
could you win me a trip to monza too?
Does RCC think Leigh is a girls name?
Wouldn't be the first time that mistake was made
I get it from time to time too
All the Leigh's I know are ladies! (well 'ladies' is pushing the term)....but I my bad, I apologise!
How about you call yourself Mr Leigh O'Gorman (yes I know it's not ideal)
My last name is a girls name and for years people have gotten me mixed up in emails
To be fair all of the Leighs I knew until I met this Leigh were of the female persuasion too.
RCC... Last name must be C... MRS C!!!! UNMASKED! Christine has a second account? Oh no maybe not ;)
Odd - I've had the complete opposite experience. I've never met a male "Lee"
if you're an Australian resident :)
that'd never work, i live too far away! :)
I work with a lee who is a boy and my middle name is lee so I guess either spelling works either way. How confusing :D
I work with 2 male Lee's in my company...you're just odd then!
RCC is a throwback to years ago (when I was in a band...Rockingcopsecorner)...kinda only use it on the vague hope that one of you lot remembers me.
My mate Liss posts in here sometimes and she often gets her identity confused...(a female who likes motorsport is gold dust to some it seems)
I work with one... I could introduce you and we could see if the universe collapses.
I do remember don't you worry...
I knew I'd bring about the end of civilisation eventually
is it wrong I mostly want the prize for the business class flights moreso than the f1y bits :)
Bound to happen eventually, we may as well get on with it.
For me, Leigh = guy, Lee = girl. Well, except for American Idol's Lee DeWyze, but that's another story. :D
Fair enough. I'll get the ant-matter so.
yes. how about you give me the f1 bits and you get a free flight to Italy! ;)
I'll bring the dec-matter :)
Gahhh - so it was "I" that pressed the button ?!
I seem to remember RCC that you were going to change your name when silverstone was about to be dumped, but then your band broke up or something?
Would you need to change your name with the new Silverstone configuration?
what about the chap from steps who isn't H :D
See with me 'Leigh' to me is a Scottish name for Leah, Lea, or Lee all used in a female context....I wouldn't of even thought it was male name. I'm glad I stand corrected now....
It's more that it's just a lame internet name....i'd rather just say Mike C (can you work out the girls name yet? lol) or Miguel as all my friends call me. Yeah the band ended....haven't missed it one bit....just as i'm sure the Merc factory doesn't miss us thrashing metal out at all hours practicing next door to it...
That said though the band ended at the end of 2009.....that was a good year for the Brackely team.....since we left they've been in the weeds a bit
Err, yes. Was never really a huge fan of Steps, though. Not enough to care for anyone other than Rachel and Hannah, anyway. :D
It was all about Lisa with Steps....hmmmmm (growls and stares into the middle distance)
Mike Christine?
Hmmm. I might've mixed up my Steps and my S Club there. See? Never really cared much. :D
wrong band.
But steps are back together so now you can start caring. Hooray!
caught it before you could post it, thank goodness. :D
Why are all the 90s bands reuniting again?

So I have never ending amounts of emails from clients mailing Mrs Michael and such a like....
tis great fun....honest :-)
I blame H from Steps
It's ok Mrs Michael... nothing like that will happen here :)
...and definitely not John?
I had a person I knew in a work context who's name wasn't Holly... In my head her name was Holly Helenhead which is obviously not true. Don't write it the right way incase she googles herself and finds out I am an idiot :)
No....that's my dad
Well, as long as your dad isn't Jennifer Gray, that' OK
He might be after his 'transition' ;-)
We don't talk...cul de sac of conversation this topic....moving on!
Right folks,
I need to disappear for a while -see you later
Along with paper books giving way to e-books, newspaper reporting giving way to blogging and online reporting, something that would be unheard of only a couple years ago shows how far the print media is fading from the landscape of relevancy. Denver Post pulled a batch of comic strips a couple weeks ago to very little protest from readers.
http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2011/06/denver_post_yanks_doonesbury_peanuts.php
Hello there :)
print has gone. one day people will look back and question how the hell it hung on for so long. now there are several business models and several reading devices, print has no chance.
this echoes my comment on the F1 photographer thread. I talked about how web-comics have supplanted syndicated comics in the paper. I strongly suspect the days are numbered for the F1 photog as the job stands now.

also worth noting that christine released a book without the need for an editor or a publisher. that's two more professions likely going to the wall. while jk rowling is releasing her books directly on her own site, bypassing everyone bar the credit card company (in this case google). expect a lot more authors to follow suit the minute she announces how much profit she made from selling the same content twice.
and in double quick time. saying print is dead just a few years ago seemed a little off the wall and already its become the logical conclusion.

Ooooh, earthquake.
http://geofon.gfz-potsdam.de/eqinfo/event.php?id=gfz2011olwg
It doesn't seem that bad, especially at first, but goodness me, you get startled when you figure it out.
Crikey.
Indeed. We're fine, but that got hairy for a moment there.
So glad you're okay. Do they happen frequently there?
Probably more frequently compared to where you guys are at (East Coast). There's a lot of small quakes here, but we're so used to them, we rarely feel them. Judging by the people on Facebook and Twitter, we definitely felt that one.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/germany-2011-rate-the-race

Nope, at home. Some people still at work, though - following your hours. But it was felt all over the Metro. Universal reaction, pretty much.
Well, that puts it into perspective. :)
Phew.

I remember about 10 years ago watching a wrestling event at like, 2am and there was a shudder that they made huge on the BBC Wales news even though it was a tiny shudder. I just thought I was really sleepy!
Can't even imagine what the smallest of quakes must be like to be part of though.
Yeah, I've never been through one.

But the fact that you wrote in the comments "ooh earthquake" makes me smile. It can't be all that bad- even though it's still an earthquake - if you had time and opportunity to tell us.
No need to go looking for it. It'll find you at least once in your life, sooner or later. ;)
We get the hurricanes, tornados, floods, ice storms and stuff like that.
Do 'buses being late' class as a natural disaster? Because they're damn traumatic. :)
in my book, yes. :)
We've got tons of hurricanes (called typhoons here). A dozen out of 25 or so hit us every year, 2-3 pretty badly. Tornados are rare, but I've seen them happen. Ice storms are impossible here, but we've seen hail.
:D

It kind of made sense, if their current unit is a bit weak. They can do a lot with the extra ballast
