We're heading to the halfway point of the week, and we now have our USF1 announcement, but nothing from Honda as yet. Let's see what else is happening in the F1 world:

  • The BBC have released extensive details about their plans for UK coverage of F1 in 2009. It all sounds good, although perhaps not quite as thrilling as we'd hoped. However, we will see when it all kicks off next month.
  • A1GP boss Tony Teixeira has popped his head up and said he's now considering starting a team from scratch. Every now and then he says he might be interested in buying into a team, but presumably all this talk of USF1 has spurred him on to create his own.
  • In Sidepodfun news, Gavin has set up a Mario Kart Wii Tournament, and would like all those who are willing and able to sign up for some competitive gaming. Visit the wiki page to register your interest, and provide your Wii licence number, and get ready for the karting to commence.

That'll do for now, as ever, you don't have to stick to the things I've listed above. Feel free to discuss whatever's on your mind, there's no such thing as off-topic on the daily post. I'll see you in the comments.

    Well how about that, first.

I'll start with a hilarious link which the main gist of is how I feel about USF1.

    http://www.teamamericaf1.com/blog/

Pretty long but great. Have it bookmarked myself to read more later. I see USF1 as saying "We'll win because we're American, and we don't care what you think, because we're American". Stupid launch crap, the guys don't have a clue.

It's slightly more tasteful that I was hoping. :D

ok, if you do a hard refresh on doohickey, some new things:

    - right-click links are no longer annoying, but left-click still opens in a new window

    - the error message is smaller to fit onto the g1

    - and alex's request... if you're typing a comment, incoming conversation is queued until you're done.

  • Dom25/02/2009 at 00:38

    It's wider.

  • Dom25/02/2009 at 00:38

    & +

All seems to be in order. ;)

  • Andy Taylor25/02/2009 at 00:39

Ooooooo I like the pending count

  • me25/02/2009 at 00:39

conversation is queued until you’re done.

to explain this a little more...

    - if any comment box is open on the page, you're notified of new comments with a box in the top right hand corner

    - if the refresh checkbox is unchecked, you are now notified of new comments with a box in the top right hand corner

    - cancelling a comment or posting a comment loads the pending comments

    - clicking the "pending" box, also refreshes the comments

pls yell if that doesn't make sense.

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 00:39

    - right-click links are no longer annoying, but left-click still opens in a new window

    Good

    - the error message is smaller to fit onto the g1

    Not something that worries me

    - and alex’s request… if you’re typing a comment, incoming conversation is queued until you’re done.

    Fabulous idea

  • me25/02/2009 at 00:40

    It’s wider.

very slightly. the error messages should now be central - they were a little offset before.

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 00:40

Well it definitely holds comments till you post.

  • Bassano Clapper25/02/2009 at 00:40

pls yell if that doesn’t make sense.

    All very good

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 00:40

    Love the pending box.

    sidepodspace update

Missed another rocket launch and it all went about as well as a Mediatemple sever. NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory which was to monitod carbon dioxide has been lost due to a suspected failure of the fairing that covers the satellite.

No doubt they will have a replacement ready for launch by 2015.

  • Joe25/02/2009 at 01:14

    Wow, shame.

Steven, just wondering with your guest posts, how do you get the motivation to do those? Same can be asked to Me, Ollie and a lot of folks here really. Do you not think "I can't be bothered"? I ask because I'm more the latter, have a Mark Webber tribute I've wanted to do for ages, same for Jenson and others but having trouble to sit down and do it.

  • me25/02/2009 at 01:14

    a blog??

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 01:16

Finally home. I am not going to even bother watching the USF1 launch again on my TV recorder. I am writing out my thoughts on it for the eagles blog. Basically, I was underwhelmed and now little bit nervous. I figure that they would have more stuff figured out by now; especially the financing. That what I get for getting my hopes up.

Steve, didn't you mention that there was a comet going over North America tonight?

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 01:24

By nature I am a counter-puncher so writing comments even very long detailed comments in answer to someone's original post I find very easy. Based on some of my more verbose comments I was asked to write some articles for another site and I really struggled.

Some of them came really easy and others I would take forever to get a line or two written. The piece on Gilles is definitely the best thing I have written and it was so easy. I literally did it as fast as I could type apart from the time I spent editing chunks out.

My biggest problem is finding something to write about that is original as I have no intention of writing something that has been done on 100 other sites.

I find once I get started I make good progress generally but sitting with a blank screen trying to start can be very difficult and more than once after an hour I have shut it down and given up on the story.

If you are struggling try and find a decent source of the factual info you want to use and once you have that you will probably find you start writing bits to join the facts together.

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 01:25

Steve, didn’t you mention that there was a comet going over North America tonight?

I think it is tonight. It is not on the NASA front page any more but if you can find Saturn in the sky it should be under that and it should look slightly green. It is only 38 million miles away so if the angles are right it should be visible.

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 01:27

Just caught up on the Honda news.

I just get angry with Honda's management every time I listen to them talk. How can a company receive offers but no serious offers. I've worked for businesses and state chambers all my life and I've never seen someone say, "Yeah, but that wasn't a serious offer." Especially at that level of a transaction.

I hope there is a special place in the afterlife for people like Honda's management. I've never seen a bunch of incompetent idiots. Sorry to Lou and others, but what happening just isn't right for everyone in Brackley.

I've never owned a Honda and based on their actions, I've decided I am never going to own one.

nope, generally i'm a pretty motivated person. however, writing isn't an effective use of my time. christine can write in ten minutes something that would take me several hours. and even after i've written something, the girl has to check it for grammar.

i'll never write an article as good as steven's and i'll never hold a candle to ollie in that respect either. i'll keep trying though, simply because some ideas work better in text than in audio, video, or picture.

USF1 have a section where you can send them a message. One of the options for the message is job application.

If F1 returns to Detroit, perhaps USF1 and other manufacturers (and sponsors) could apply for a small % of the Trouble Asset Relief Program? Yes, that is how ING could continue to support the sport, bring back Jaguar, etc.

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 01:53

If F1 returns to Detroit, perhaps USF1 and other manufacturers (and sponsors) could apply for a small % of the Trouble Asset Relief Program? Yes, that is how ING could continue to support the sport, bring back Jaguar, etc.

    In all seriousness.

I'm actually going to write about this on my blog. After reading most of the legislation on the Automotive bailout package (part of my day job) I think a U.S. automaker like Ford could get away with sponsoring the F1 team with government funds.

See if Ford claims that F1's KERS technology is apart of their green energy research, it's very possible that they would get re-reimbursed by the federal government as apart of the bailout.

    This way:

    - USF1 gets their domestic engine and sponsorship

    - A domestic manufacture basically gets free advertising.

    - The US taxpayers get to pay for some real estate on an F1 chassis and KERS research and technologies.

I love living in a country that has absolutely no sense in how to handle money.

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 02:57

After looking at all this, I have a conspiracy theory about the USF1. I go into on my blog.

This wasn't a team launch, it was an infomercial. They are looking for investors and sponsors and needed some positive press to start pressing people and companies on F1. I can guess that we are going to see the sponsor rumors...

    Dan,

    It's not talking to yourself, it's called micro-blogging :)

    Link for the USF1:

USF1 decribed on the f1 site

I didn't even know they were launching officially this week - before the season starts - smart move. then if anyone gets bored in their job this year they can think about jumping ship. and they get their share of publicity throughout the entire year of F1 and they got launched in a period where they can get 100% of the media because there is still not too much to talk about.

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 07:14

Ah yes, the curse of the blank screen. I take myself off somewhere with a notebook and start doodling.

I may do a guest post myself at some point (invite permitting!). During research for the booky wook I stumbled upon a piece by DSJ that really calls to be dusted down and put on display because it is just as relevant now as it was when first written (1973). I'll do edited highlights. You'll love it.

Hey everyone. I'm having to use the computers in the library to write this because my laptop has gone on the blink and is being repaired as I speak. For those who it may concern, I managed to pick up Race Pro yesterday from GAME. To be honest, I was hoping it would be fantastic but to me, it's actually only quite good. There are areas which I feel could be improved on.

For one, there's no sense of speed. You look at the speedo and you're doing 100 but it just doing feel as though you are. There's no motion blur or vibrations or shaking of the camera. Plus, the damage system isn't too realistic mechanically and the cosmetic damage could be better. And every time you hit the barrier it sounds like you're stepping on a twig or squashing a bug. There's no loud crash which is rather disappointing. The handling of the cars feels rather stiff and on some of them, they have hardly any brakes at all. The Aston Martin DBRS9 is a perfect example. I can brake as hard as possible at speed and they hardly work at all. Another thing which has gotten to me is the fact that already the circuits and the racing is all feeling a bit repetitive in Career Mode and that the game never really moves along quickly. Oh sure, the races are short, between 2 and 4 laps at the moment but without that sense of speed it just feels a little sluggish, a chore even.

I have to say that I am starting to become a little disappointed with a game that I was looking forward to so much. Thankfully I didn't spend any money since I traded games in to get it. I haven't tried the multiplayer aspect of racing yet since I've been unable to connect to any of the games. But for now, my opinion of this game is that while it does have its good bits here and there, it could be improved on quite a bit.

  • me25/02/2009 at 10:53

The BBC have released extensive details about their plans for UK coverage of F1 in 2009. It all sounds good, although perhaps not quite as thrilling as we’d hoped. However, we will see when it all kicks off next month.

wow, im a bit surprised at that. What did you feel let down by? I felt it came across as very impressive personally but whether they'll live up to their words is another thing. I'm confident though :)

Thank you Stuart! I was wracking my brain trying to remember where that was from (besides the obvious Steve Jobs reference of course). I had read about it just the other day and googling just bought up the Apple references.

F1 Fanatic thinks F1 needs Oval races

Seriously? I always find oval races dull and dangerous. I only really watch the Indy 500 but there hasn't been a good one for years...

  • Alianora La Canta25/02/2009 at 12:22

    Steven, just wondering with your guest posts, how do you get the motivation to do those? Same can be asked to Me, Ollie and a lot of folks here really. Do you not think “I can’t be bothered”? I ask because I’m more the latter, have a Mark Webber tribute I’ve wanted to do for ages, same for Jenson and others but having trouble to sit down and do it. {Comment #54}

Try setting yourself a schedule, breaking the tributes down into pieces. Give yourself a little reward each time you complete a piece. Better still, tell people what your schedule is so that you get their encouragement to finish the parts/whole at the time you intend to do them.

Sometimes a self-imposed restriction, even a daft one such as "I will write this piece on Mark Webber and all the paragraphs will start with W" can help the creative juices to flow. You can always break the restriction when you've completed the first draft and go back to edit.

    Hi all

Just been reading USF1 article the link posted in the first few comments. The usual propoganda etc from a new team blah blah blah but what on earth do they mean by this?

One of the most prominent pieces of information to come out of the interview was the revelation by Peter Windsor that “…F1 comes from the US to begin with…”. Europeans claim that they we’re the main organizers of the Formula 1 World Championship, but Mr. Windsor believes otherwise. Since it's accepted now that Formula 1 was from the USA, this makes it even more important that we have a team based on our country.

Since it's accepted now that Formula 1 was from the USA..........hang on where was it accepted?

  • Alianora La Canta25/02/2009 at 14:08

    Since it’s accepted now that Formula 1 was from the USA……….hang on where was it accepted? {Comment #102}

Oh no, not another of Peter's assumptions! Usually he puts "of course" nearby to make them easier to spot, but it's still frustrating when he takes a non-axiomatic statement as an axion.

Especially since Formula 1 was originally from France...

  • Maverick25/02/2009 at 14:16

but what on earth do they mean by this?

That blog blurs the lines between truth and satire so much that are we sure this comment was actually made? Either way, I definitely think "Since it’s accepted now that Formula 1 was from the USA" was made in jest.

  • RCC (aka Rockingcopsecorner)25/02/2009 at 14:16

Football League and Carling Cup on BBC. YAY!!! And Open golf, GOODBYE SKY SPORTS, WOO!

Aaaaand end of favourtism, though a hint of ice hockey would be nice with some live Super League matches.

Now I’m all for cut-backs in these tough times, but that USF1 website looks very mid-90s!

I like it though, it is very simple but nice. Not to over the top compared to some teams, which is nice.

my guess is the same developer wrote the site. because the header is identical in both. either that, or they’ve stolen from joe?

Bet big on IT. It's where the money will be, I tell ya.

Funny how the era of sponsorship from the financial sector seems to be ending so quickly. Ciggies stuck around for the better part of 40 years. Financials won't be around for more than 5.

The IT 'boom' was about 8/10 years ago? Even the goliath that is Microsoft are reporting a down-turn in profits at the moment. Doubt things will pick up or reach the dizzy heights they once did for ages, if ever again in that industry.

  • Dom25/02/2009 at 18:50

  • Alianora La Canta25/02/2009 at 18:51

    Financials won’t be around for more than 5. {Comment #149}

Probably because the cigarette companies didn't sabotage their own profitability directly (apart from making quite a lot of their customers' lives shorter) - they waited for the government to (slowly) get round to banning them. Then they fought really hard to prevent the sports sponsorship from being lost, whereas for the sinking financial companies it was one of the easiest things to jettison.

  • Dom25/02/2009 at 18:51

Do ITV still not have the rights to those?

You can blame Vista for that. Even in boom times, people are reluctant to swap functional stuff for rubbish.

There's a second IT boom coming from the likes of Google and the best of the Web 2.0 companies. Some of them might consider sponsorship, though it'll be a while before they're willing to pay F1 rates.

  • Journeyer25/02/2009 at 18:53

True, but then, IT will be strong in this recession era. Most other companies will look to cutting costs and outsourcing IT to companies like HP and IBM. Unless you see any other industries that will suddenly boom in this recession?

  • RG25/02/2009 at 18:54

What Christine said really. People look at their spending habits and cut back to the essentials, not the desirables. So necessities such as food and drink are going to remain steady.

Will any of these sponsor F1? Probably not. It works for Red Bull as it ties in with their 'extreme' image that they portray (and seems to work rather well as sales increased yet again in 2009).

    There's your answer. ;)

  • lou25/02/2009 at 20:21

Will have a go this week.

you are brave. i'll watch as usual :)

  • lou25/02/2009 at 20:22

That has to be worth a listen

can we get a sidepodreminder for it though? knowing me i'll forget. oo what do you think the chances are of them releasing it as a podcast...

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 20:22

you are brave. i’ll watch as usual :)

Join in Lou. Even if you are nly in the chat and don't put in answers it can be fun.

  • Dom25/02/2009 at 20:25

will rephraise it… what are the chances of getting a reliable stream for it? the buffering i experienced during the usf1 launch yesterday was awful. i couldn’t watch a gp2 race like that. lol

It sometimes works for me, like last Sunday for the A1GP. I think it must be slower depending on how many people are watching, which would explain why the Daytona 500 was (even more) unwatchable.

  • lou25/02/2009 at 20:25

Join in Lou. Even if you are nly in the chat and don’t put in answers it can be fun.

lol i'm fine watching ;) plus i'm doing some work anyway :) will do the spot the difference though :P

  • Alex Andronov25/02/2009 at 20:25

So we learned a lot. Too complicated to explain now though!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/02/2009 at 20:26

What have you been up to???

  • lou25/02/2009 at 20:27

So we learned a lot. Too complicated to explain now though!

you should all be on the show next week and help 'me' explain it :P

  • Andy Taylor25/02/2009 at 20:28

So we learned a lot. Too complicated to explain now though!

Surely it would be better to explain now, rather than after several pints of beer?

  • Steven Roy25/02/2009 at 20:28

Surely it would be better to explain now, rather than after several pints of beer?

By Sunday they will have forgotten it all again and have to go to another one.

  • Alex Andronov25/02/2009 at 20:30

One thing was that it is important is he said that breaking is faster with the kers. So you want to be sure that you have used enough so that you can absorb the energy from breaking.

  • Alex Andronov25/02/2009 at 20:36

So there was a couple of bullet points

    • KERS in F1 isn't green

    • and won't mean more overtaking

And we won't tell you the third thing until you choose a drink.

  • Andy Taylor25/02/2009 at 20:36

And we won’t tell you the third thing until you choose a drink.

    DRINK!

  • RG25/02/2009 at 20:36

  • Alex Andronov25/02/2009 at 20:38

    Boring!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)25/02/2009 at 20:42

I guess it's also a little bit of envy that I am over here in Denmark and I am unable to attend these cool gatherings and stuff...

I should start a DenmarkF1 team ... we could have Tom Kristensen and Jan Magnussen in the car too. Then you'll all have to come over here and visit!

  • Dirty Scarab25/02/2009 at 22:29

I see USF1 as saying “We’ll win because we’re American, and we don’t care what you think, because we’re American”. Stupid launch crap, the guys don’t have a clue.

Congratulations on a most unintelligent post.

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 22:30

I should start a DenmarkF1 team … we could have Tom Kristensen and Jan Magnussen in the car too.

Now that would be a team!

In line with the northwest separatist movement, I believe the Republic of Cascadia deserves its' own team F1. We could have Boeing, Starbucks, Amazon.com, Microsoft, Nike, and Real Networks as sponsors. Our car can have a mighty open mouth salmon on its’ nose. Either that or we can have a Geoduck, which in the Christine cuteness scale, is the anti-panda.

  • Christine25/02/2009 at 22:31

    What IS that??

  • RG25/02/2009 at 22:32

North-EastRacing. We could have Rob Smedley.

Erm, I think there is a BTCC racer from the north east as well, erm, ooh, greggs are from up here, maybe this is a bad business venture

  • Dan Brunell25/02/2009 at 22:37

    What IS that??

Its' the most disgusting clam you can ever think of. They are huge, heavy and taste disgusting. I don't know why some people like to eat them or why some college that never left the 60's would have it as their mascot. I always get them when I go claming on the weekends.

It's the type of thing that only the stig would eat.

  • Andy Taylor25/02/2009 at 22:41

It’s the type of thing that only the stig would eat.

Clarkson would too, he'll eat anything.

  • Dank25/02/2009 at 22:42

According to the man in the know at the BBC: they (the Beeb) have the rights to GP2 and other support races, but they've decided not to show them to concentrate on F1. It's not economically viable for them.

I'm so confused about Honda's situation right now. I can't imagine how the people in the factory feel right now.

  • Joe25/02/2009 at 23:36

You can't imagine how me, Luke and Lou are feeling now either. Unless you're a big fan yourself.

    Absolutely.

Really, who wants to buy a Honda after all this? I for one don't.

  • Alenyaa25/02/2009 at 23:40

I just took a look at the quiz questions, I got most questions on the modern era right (say '99 onwards), but really miss out on questions that go further back in time.

    Great results by you guys!

  • Joe25/02/2009 at 23:47

I don't have any ill feeling towards the company. I'm not thinking that they're evil baddies or anything like that. Not their fault about the bad car sales, even though they wouldn't have pulled out had F1 been a success for them.

  • Alenyaa25/02/2009 at 23:49

Pulling out of F1 was the most sensible and responsible thing to do looking at the bigger picture. unfortunately they did it Honda style...

We all know that "sources" can be a load of bull sometimes, but personally I'm believing this one, for the most part anyway:

The source likened the situation to "being in the final stages of buying a house" and said Brawn had told employees that "everything's positive - it's all going ahead".

    Well done to all

I actually took one for the first time on my own. 15. Is it sad that most of my knowlege of 90's F1 drivers comes from video games.

I don’t have any ill feeling towards the company. I’m not thinking that they’re evil baddies or anything like that.

I understand their motives in wanting to sell the team. I am not angry about that. The thing is that they haven't helped themselves in the process. If so many people inquired about buying the team, why has it taken this long? Why haven't they done what Ford did when they wanted out and pick a person and give it to them for a dollar or something like that? Why do they keep on setting these unrealistic timelines only for it to fall through? If they are losing money hand over fist, why didn't they just close it or did a quick sale?

This thing is turning out like what happen with Super Aguri where everyone was on a knives edge with the team and then they killed it when they shoed all the potential investors away. That what upsets me now. It like déjà vu all over again.
