Panda Propaganda

"Because you can not have propaganda without a Panda hidden in it."

Editorial Page

Oh, darn, Saturday Night here in Tundraland, and I still have to write that Daily for Sidepodcast. "...Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking caffeine..."

"You ?!, stop drinking caffeine, surely you can not be serious?"

"Yes, I am serious, and stop calling me Shirley!..."

Well, it is an old joke, said about 50 times in the movie Airplane! but if a sarcastic lass did say the second line instead of just laughing at the idea of me trying to cut back on my caffeine intake I would definitely fire that well used retort.

Good Easter Monday morning to everyone. There are a lucky few of you out there that are into the fourth day of a hopefully pleasant four-day long weekend. Many others just have had Good Friday off and to them I say that this Easter Monday that you spend at work is THE DAY that earns you the money to spend on our collective interest of Formula 1.

Current Events: (The Sidepodcast / Another F1 Podcast Flame War)

General Admission believes that the Another F1 Podcast offensive was A Bridge Too Far and now plans to unleash counter-offensive to move his "wine cabinet six inches closer to the heart of Another F1 podcast's territory."

Racing News:

Racing correspondent Alianora La Canta has been covering the Le Mans series tests at Spa. Here is what she has filed from her blog.

Dates to remember:

SeriesRaceDate
NascarRichmond 400April 30th
IndycarSan Paulo Indy 300May 1st
Le Mans Series1000 km of SpaMay 5th - 7th.
Formula 1Spanish Grand PrixMay 21st
American Le Mans SeriesNortheast Grand PrixJuly 9th

So with such little racing going on you might be forgiven for thinking that there is nothing to do but there is still lots of sports to cover, things to do, and needed work and upgrades to be completed. For example, a quick look at Mapquest showed me that my home is 618 kilometers or roughly 7 hours drive away from Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. That is roughly (give or take 20 km) the distance from London, England to Edinburgh, Scotland, so with all that space, something interesting has to be going on, right ?

Other Sports News:

In the NHL, there is the conference semi-finals. Maurice Marmot and I are proud fans of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team, so Viva Les Habs! We need the Canadiens to tie the series at three games a piece to force a final seventh game of the series, and if this was any other team than the Boston (B) Ruins, we would be worried for the Habs.

Out West, the Vancouver Canucks are winning their series against Wilman's Chicago Blackhawks. #SorryJordan :P

The baseball season is completing its first month of the season. Major League Baseball is split into two leagues - the older National League and the American League with normally the teams playing only their league rivals until the so-called "World Series" is played. Each League has three Divisions - East, Central and West. I tend to follow the what is called the American League East Division - Where I tend to support two teams - The Boston Red Sox and whoever is playing the New York Yankees. Quite a few years back, each League had only two Divisions, and the quality of certain teams was so bad that a team in particular became regarded as less than a joke., at least to be the "In Joke" of a Charlie Sheen movie called "Major League", the believe it or not used to be feared tribe of the Cleveland Indians. (JYS was not even born when the Indians last had a decent baseball team.)

But enough on Tundraland, what is going on in Sidepodcastland?

Financial Section:

The Christine (see top this page) has risen sharply against all major currencies as the plan to remove the Christine off the Gold Standard has been shelved.

Travel Section:

No Sidepodcastmeetups have been planned as yet.

First Officer Lou has been fully checked out and is now like myself, fully qualified to fly on Instruments at Sidepodcast Airways. (See photo right.)

Entertainment Section:

Yesterday Giggles attempted to celebrate his birthday in the traditional fashion. Unfortunately it was cancelled by the fire department as that many candles on a cake was considered to be a fire risk. Happy Birthday Giggles, and if Giggles Radio did not air it might be the end result of the fire risk of too many candles on the cake. Giggles does plan to have a "Giggles Radio - Super Soaraway Summertime Special" show today at 4pm BST (11 am, EDT).

You really have to hand it to Christine, operating four web sites, watch F1 races, produce non-video webcasts, and she still has time to look at movies. She has recently taken a look at Easy A for Film Watch's 129th Film. By way of comparison, I have forgotten most of the two films that I have seen since the start of this year but my priorities are sightly different. You can see them at my personal blog.

Sir Dan Brunell Doyle returns his two famous literary creations from his full-length novels The Sine of the DRS and the The Panda of the Blachfords with a collection of short stories in The Case-Book of John M. Watson. Join the world's only Detective Reporter with his friend and college, Dr. Steven Roy in such classic short stories as:

  • The Adventure of the Bruce-McLaren Plans;
  • The Adventure of the Second Lotus;
  • The Adventure of the Solitary Driver;
  • The Adventure of the Concorde Treaty;
  • A Scandal in Woking;
  • The Adventure of the Crooked Lollipop Man;
  • The Adventure of Black Jack;
  • The Adventure of Abbey Corner,
  • The Adventure of the Jaguar Diamond;
  • A Case of Identity (Who is Mr. C?);
  • The Adventure of the Sidepodcast Ritual;
  • The Adventure of the Missing USF1 Team.

So that is today's edition of Panda Propaganda, for more chuckles, take a look at the actual titles of the Sherlock Holmes case titles to see how little was actually changed. The only one that might throw people off is "The Jaguar Diamond". Once you see the title of the last short story, the connection to the "author" should be , well "Elementary". Sadly, I did not feel comfortable enough to come up with a Professor Moriarty character, as my target would have been Alianora.

    Perfect. The ability to casue a reader to at least chuckle at a joke that fell flat on its face as the reader thinks "Did he just write that? what nerve!", as the reader is proven correct.

    Well, good night everyone left in the comments. There is a couple of things that I would like to do bright and early tomorrow so not to miss Giggles Radio.

    Thanks to Christine, Mr. C, Alinora La Canta (twice), Lou, Giggles, John Waston, Steven Roy and Dan Brunell for being such sports.

    Exactly, but the concorde agreement expires next year. So obviously this change would affect the 2013 season.

    Yeah, it's still down and has been for a few days now. It's all very embarrassing for Sony, it seems the network was completely thrown apart by hackers which is all very sad really.

    That's what they are saying, but those hackers say they didn't attach Sonny's servers... Hackers think Sony had a problem with their servers, and they decided to switch them off and accuse Anonymous.

    There is no way they would have had them down so long.

    the only reason i can think it would take so many days is if sony thought the hackers were close to user information like addresses and credit cards and are having to rebuild a large part of their system

  • Nick25/04/2011 at 10:43

    In terms of broadcast reach. I havent seen sky, but fox movies is the nearest thing we have here and its free :)

  • Pat W25/04/2011 at 11:37

    to be honest i wouldnt be surprised if the british market was hardly even considered IF he was planning a bid.

    If News Corp owned F1 they would have to think about the best way to get a return and that might not be to put it on Sky Sports... or it might be to have it on both Sky and BBC/ITV and give Sky more access or something?

    That doesn't make much sense unless you already have Sky TV. For those of us on Freeview we don't see any Sky FTA channels

    The UK is a small market, I have no idea why everyone thinks its so important in the deal. Compare it to, South and south east Asia rights, China, South America e.t.c.

    I'm not talking about the number of viewers though. Of course there are bigger markets in terms of viewers but I mean that the way F1 is viewed in the UK, it's much higher up the list of top sports than in other countries.

    According to Sameer Gaur, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of Jaypee Sports International, the name is derived from the word Buddha, and represents peace and calm.[1]

    there is a Gautam Buddh University http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-04-17/kanpur/29444132_1_examination-centres-entrance-exam-examinees

    Buddah is also known as Gautam Buddha, so i guess it is indeed a Buhddist track

    Lots of fun & defiantly not too long! :D

    Virigin is looking for someone to up more speed in their cars.

    The Obit sub-section would be the demise of DRS at Monaco.....

    And Christine has a posting for a "lost" Michilin man. Hmmm, I did not even knew she noticed him around after that Panda entered the scence....

    The UK is a small market, I have no idea why everyone thinks its so important in the deal. Compare it to, South and south east Asia rights, China, South America e.t.c.

    Because F1 is having a lot of difficulty leveraging potential markets and due to the huge loans it has, needs to maximise the markets it already has open. The UK, along with Germany, Italy and Brazil, put the largest amount of money into F1's pockets right now.

    CVC holds the loans, Murdoch wouldnt face any of those challenges due to to his massive media resources

  • Alianora La Canta25/04/2011 at 13:06

    Ive always thought they could use it for live sport which was on a 'terrestial-only list' they have all the production facilities

    At the moment, "terrestrial-only" lists in the UK can only be BBC 1/2, ITV, Channel 4 or Five. After switchover is completed I expect that to change, but even then it'll be only channels everyone with a low-quality Freeview box in the middle of nowhere can get, so I wouldn't expect the choice to expand much.

    Sky isn't part of the Freeview/Freesat project as such, it just happens to have a channel there. For the moment.

    :D Turning the Daily into a newspaper was a really good idea, Jordan F1. Thank you for writing it.

    Thanks. My idea came from the Strand Newspapers from 1891 to 1903, which contained the originial Sherlcok Holmes stories as a sort of fuller. Too bad I had to bin the idea of Professor Alinora Moriarty, but I could not come up with an alternaate title to "The Final Problem".

    And although Moriarity is not really in the story "The Empty House" I would have penned "The Adventure of the Empty Headquaters", but that would have been way too mean on USF!.

    And Moriarity is only referred to in "The Valley of Fear" which I guess would have easily been renamed "The Circuit of Fear", especially if the setting was the Nordschliefe......

  • Alianora La Canta25/04/2011 at 13:08

    CVC holds the loans, Murdoch wouldnt face any of those challenges due to to his massive media resources

    Point taken. Nonetheless, it would take years for a pay platform to work - F1 lost a huge number of spectators when Finland swapped to Eurosport this year, for example - and the free-to-air platform isn't available everywhere (I only know one person in my neighbourhood who can get Sky 3, for example).

    The problem you face with altering "The Adventure of the Final Prblem" is how do you get around around the face that Doyle was trying to kill of Holmes at that point. Any trick you put into play herer to keep Holmes alive just makes the final story "His Last Bow" sound stupid.

    In another words, which is final "The Adventure of the Final Race" or "His Last Race"? :P

    P.S. This is the sort of thing that got you pegged as my Moriarty in the first place.....

    It works if you substitute "bow" for a celebration typically seen by a winning driver... ...though "His Last Waved Finger" may be an exception as it looks plain wrong ;)

    It's a very long time since I watched a TV program twice but for the second day in a row I am watching United on the iplayer. It is about the Manchester United team around the Munich air crash in 1958. For non-football fans the team was almost all really young players and were one of the best teams in Europe. They were flying back from a match when their plane crashed on take off and 8 of them died.

    Also contains David Tennant.

    It does last an hour and a half though.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b010tb6z/United/

  • RG25/04/2011 at 19:37

    It does last an hour and a half though.

    Should be noted, probably more of a drama than a documentary. But was very good, impressed by the guy who played Bobby Charlton as well.

  • Lukeh25/04/2011 at 19:38

    It does last an hour and a half though.

    It was really good and very sad. Definitely more of a drama as RG says, not too sure they painted Sir Matt as the character I always assumed he was too

    Great watch though.

  • RG25/04/2011 at 19:39

    not too sure they painted Sir Matt as the character I always assumed he was too

    Seemed to look more in place in a 1950s American detective show rather than a football manager I felt.

    Should be noted, probably more of a drama than a documentary. But was very good, impressed by the guy who played Bobby Charlton as well.

  • Lukeh25/04/2011 at 19:40

    Yeah he had that moody New York police chief feel about it. Seemed out of place.

  • Steven Roy25/04/2011 at 19:40

    It was really good and very sad. Definitely more of a drama as RG says, not too sure they painted Sir Matt as the character I always assumed he was too

    I thought it was pretty close to the real Busby. The voice and manner were really close.

    What did you think was different?

  • Steven Roy25/04/2011 at 19:41

    Seemed to look more in place in a 1950s American detective show rather than a football manager I felt.

    I can see that

  • Lukeh25/04/2011 at 19:42

    What did you think was different?

    I dunno, I just always assumed he was a lighter character. Their portrayal was very moody and not very... football-y, I'm not complaining because I enjoyed it but it was just something that stood out I suppose. Definitely in agreement about the guy that played Bobby though, he was fantastic as was Mr Tennant

  • Steven Roy25/04/2011 at 19:44

    The really sad thing when you read up on it is that most if not all the players who moved to the back because it was safer died. Had they stayed where they were some of them would have survived.

    The original flight from Belgrade to Munich was delayed an hour because one of the players lost his passport. Had that not happened thesnow would not have been such an issue.

    Ifs and buts

  • Steven Roy25/04/2011 at 19:46

    Managers were very different then. They were remote. More like commanding officers. Most of them did not get involved in training at all although Busby did.

    I don't ever remember Busby as being a ligher character.

    Ironically I was watching some programme about frugal living. This man won't live with his gf and child because he can't stand the money they waste, we're talking about things like tea bags, candles, a cushion on the sofa.... I don't understand why shelling out for rent/bills on 2 houses doesn't seem more wasteful. I guess people are illogical creatures.

    He seemed pretty dedicated tbh. He melted down those bits that won't burn at the bottom of a candle to make combo candle so it wasn't wasted. He was selling egg boxes to farmers for a penny each....

    Managers were very different then. They were remote. More like commanding officers. Most of them did not get involved in training at all although Busby did.

    I don't ever remember Busby as being a ligher character.

    They have 90 minutes to tell the story of two seasons and about 30 or 40 people so it can never be accurate.

    He won more than that. I remember him winning for Penske in Austria and I remember him winning the 1980 or 81 race at Silverstone. I am sure he won in Detroit starting from 22nd. He and Lauda started something like 22nd and 23rd and ended 1-2. I think he must have won 5 or 6 races and he was definitely runner up in the championship once

    Nice try Steven.... back in the days when they only took your top X scores into consideration. What you are telling me here is that Moss was either a hero or a zero and Hawthorn was getting points dispite being many laps down per race.

  • Steven Roy25/04/2011 at 21:51

    He couldn't do it now if they banned pitstops.

    Webber nearly did it or is my memory failing?

  • Mr C25/04/2011 at 21:51

    He won from 17th on a track that was impossible to pass on.

    yes he did. back then.

    The thing about 1982 is that beacuse of death, injuries, politics and unreliability there were 11 different race winners and only Rosberg scored more than 40 points. 44 he managed. No-one won more than 2 races although there were 5 of those.

  • Steven Roy25/04/2011 at 21:54

    Guys, I was looking into applying for Pirelli media accreditation so I can use some pics on my blog - I can only find a generic contact form. Does anyone have anything more specific?

    He won more than that. I remember him winning for Penske in Austria and I remember him winning the 1980 or 81 race at Silverstone. I am sure he won in Detroit starting from 22nd. He and Lauda started something like 22nd and 23rd and ended 1-2. I think he must have won 5 or 6 races and he was definitely runner up in the championship once

    It was 5 - Austria 1976, Britain 1981, Belgium and Detroit 1982 and USA West 1983.

    In that case, you should really take a look at something called "Energy State" performance charts for variou aircraft, Mr. C, usually has speed on one axis, radius along another, G -Forces along another, separate plot lines for variou shieights, and another another set of plotlines for stall speed.

    The constant is the aircraft being flown, and it is all on on set of paper.
