Hello, Pat here. You may have seen me from such guest posts as the Indy 500 preview or the Le Mans preview, or the one with the rhino (not to mention my own blogs). I'm sorry to say your regularly-scheduled Wednesday Daily Provider is ill - get well soon Gavin! Put your feet up and watch the footie (I hope your boss doesn't think that's why you're off..).

  • Janna found this list of F1 attendees at next week's Goodwood Festival of Speed, and Steven came up with the list of which drivers are planned to be in which cars. I'm going on the Sunday and many other SPC regulars will be in attendance throughout the weekend - let us know if you're coming, we could meet up.
  • Allen at The Furious Wedge has written a great summary of all the sport he's been watching lately. There's all sorts in there, the man is sports mad and I love this post.
  • We'll be following plenty of sport ourselves today with Day 3 of Wimbledon kicking off proceedings. I'm not much of a tennis fan but I love what it signifies - you really know the British summer is here when Wimbledon is on. We'll have a live-commenting thread for that.
  • Later in the day we'll see the final four World Cup games for Groups C and D, we'll have live-commenting for that as well. I'm sure it'll get very tense this afternoon as England and the United States battle Slovenia and Algeria respectively to win a place in the next round. We obviously have a lot of English and American regulars and I imagine we'll all be on tenterhooks and not doing very much work at all - I hope those of you who can see it will let us know every detail for those of us that can't! Now I can't be sure how many Slovenians and Algerians are lurking, but I'm sure they are just as excited. The evening games will be contested by Germany, Ghana, Australia and Serbia and that group looks fun too.
  • The weekly F1 Quiz at VivaF1 will be taking place at 8.30pm in the Chat area, that's UK time, GMT+1. You'll need to register if you're new but it is quick and easy. If the footie isn't grabbing you and/or you need a fix of midweek F1 knowledge (and the tricky Spot the Difference round) just head over there, newcomers are welcome and you can fight with me for the coveted wooden spoon - I don't try to be last it just happens! All you need is to take a note of your answers and at the end send them to whoever is asking the questions.

That'll do it for now (yes finally I get to say it!) and no doubt I'll see you throughout the day, 'cos you can't get rid of me, I'm addicted.

great daily pat! thank you! :)

No probs. I was worried it wouldn't be finished and it was a bit sport-centric. :) Glad I got the quiz plug in, with the footie there won't be many around.

one of my friends who happens to have a huge obsession with everything Australian has just discovered them and was talking about ghosting.. and how great they are. I just wondered who they were. I think she must have seen them on tv last night.

are you excited for Spa? we're sitting next to each other in the grandstand so you'll be the one that will have to cope with me being sad if Mclaren ruin Jenson's race or anything ;)

  • amy via alistair22/06/2010 at 23:32

    woo goodwood!

  • lou22/06/2010 at 23:34

    w00t!

i have confirmation of payment but nothing from the goodwood site.. last year i got the choice as to whether i wanted to collect them at the gate or not, but i didn't today, so i'm going to assume they are going to be sent...

  • Pamela22/06/2010 at 23:35

Hiya, they are pretty funny, and Hamish is cute! :D

I am beyond exited. Have packed my tickets already. Not leaving Melb for another 3 weeks though. But just so I don't forget my tix at home! haha

I know Amy already mentioned it - but I have a spare lanyard which you can use. Not sure why I got two lanyards.

Has anyone else got their tickets?

  • lou22/06/2010 at 23:35

    woo goodwood!

hehe i'm so happy Karun and Heikki are going to be there. The chances are we'll be able to get much closer to them than we will Jenson cause they are less well known. yay for smaller teams.

hehe!! mine have gone into my ticket draw, which is slowly starting to fill up (yay for the summer!). Hamish is the more attractive of the two i agree :)

That's really kind of you Pamela, I emailed the Spa people about lanyards, cause they seem to be randomly giving them out. They apparently hand them out at all gates on fri-sun so i'm sure between us we can get enough... you can never have enough lanyards! :) I think most people are starting to get their tickets now :)

  • amy via alistair22/06/2010 at 23:39

i think everyone has their tickets now, apart from those going to bassanos as he missed the courier.have you been to kathmandu yet?

  • Pat W22/06/2010 at 23:41

    woo goodwood!

You're coming during the Olympic 2012 visit, right? ;)

i think everyone has their tickets now, apart from those going to bassanos as he missed the courier.have you been to kathmandu yet?

Okay, so we don't know if we are seated with you or Bassano yet. Who else was having tickets delivered to Bassano's?

I wonder if another set of my tickets will end up at Bassano's. I changed my delivery address to his house.

  • Pat W22/06/2010 at 23:42

I was. We'll find out Thursday, he said.

No to Kathmandu. I took a day of leave yesterday and went shopping but didn't make it to Kathmandu. Just ran out of time. Def this week!

Lukeh's not sitting with us :( he's sitting in row 22 i think, which is further back than us.

Goodwood is first week of July, Olympics starts the end of July.. I can see how that would be pricy

  • Pamela22/06/2010 at 23:44

Lukeh's not sitting with us :( he's sitting in row 22 i think, which is further back than us.

Oh that's a shame. I'm sure we could do a swap around, they'll only check the seat allocation not the names..

  • lou22/06/2010 at 23:45

Oh no! You didn't buy tickets together?

i bought my tickets earlier then him... basically when my dad told me too..

  • lou22/06/2010 at 23:46

hehehe! just testing. i'm sure Amy wouldn't book things 4 years in advance :)

  • Pamela22/06/2010 at 23:46

i bought my tickets earlier then him... basically when my dad told me too..

Did Lukeh quote the order number?

  • Pat W22/06/2010 at 23:46

Dad says I can use his big pile of Holiday Inn points to stay in London for nothing :) So I don't have to worry about booking to get a discount, can think about it later..

  • lou22/06/2010 at 23:46

Oh that's a shame. I'm sure we could do a swap around, they'll only check the seat allocation not the names..

not a clue. i sent him a really long email giving him my order number and Bassanos and everything he needed to do.. no idea if he remembered that when he booked the tickets though as he did that a few weeks later..

ah can someone remind me to nag him about a passport too :)

Lucky you. I believe I may be having a quiet afternoon in the office today - I gather there may be something on at 3pm today and that a few folks may take a late lunch...

I'm off work today. Woke up early this morning with the intention of cleaning the house...decided to sack myself from that loathsome task and mess about on the computer instead...because i can, ;)

    Football at 15:00pm...

Indeed. My colleague is leaving early, to which we all said: "You're not watching the football, surely?"

She replied: "No way, going shopping!"

The streets will be pretty empty.

Oooo, sounds like the big 4litre V8 40 years old is coming up on the horizon for you. The worst thing is being 39. Thirty nine sounds older than forty. When you finally hit 40 you default to being an early aged person again. Not a late 30 something...and you also get the desire to join a running club like me and go racing. Or start driving high power F1cars like Michael...

    ;)

May have stopped HRT being an embarrasment in Bahrain, and the next new team may not be quick..

  • Leigh O'Gorman23/06/2010 at 13:14

May have stopped HRT being an embarrasment in Bahrain, and the next new team may not be quick..

...but look at HRT in Canada - barring Chandhok's broken gearbox, Senna plonked his car on the grid faster than a Virgin (oh God!!) only 4.2 seconds off of Hamilton.

If they start taking cars off the race track without replacing testing, then they'll only have teams falling off quicker and I believe that will only harm the sport.

  • Pat W23/06/2010 at 13:19

...but look at HRT in Canada - barring Chandhok's broken gearbox, Senna plonked his car on the grid faster than a Virgin (oh God!!) only 4.2 seconds off of Hamilton.

So they fixed their problems and got quicker.

If they start taking cars off the race track without replacing testing, then they'll only have teams falling off quicker and I believe that will only harm the sport.

They weren't ready in Bahrain and Chandhok shouldn't have been out there after qualifying, no reflection on him but his was the least prepared car. Teams have 4 hours of free practice to use as testing, I'm all for the new teams but if they aren't fast enough they shouldn't be in the race. I'm glad they are now.

  • RubberGoat23/06/2010 at 13:20

My point is though it just seems silly to have a return to the 107% rule, but still have a ban on testing at the same time - even a limited return to testing would work much better.

Especially as it is 107% of the top Q1 time when all the top guys run on hard tyres. In Canada apart from Chandhok who was 8 seconds slower than a representative time everyone was within 105%

am currently working on "sidepodcast offline". a means of browsing the site even after your connection has died. useful if you're reading on a phone and disappear underground (alex).

at the moment only the "about page" is enabled, but just giving a heads-up if the following message appears for you:

you may see that in firefox, but offline browsing works on all the latest versions of chrome, safari and firefox browsers.

I called them at work to update everything and they basically said, from this second you're uninsured.... Even though my job title has hardly changed. Then they had the cheek to charge me £60 cancellation fee as if I'd wanted to cancel!!!

Apparently I had a discounted policy that was only available to people in certain professions and working in a cinema was acceptable but a shop isn't.... Morons. They gave me a new quote on a non-discounted policy which was £1300 more than I pay now. Strangely I have found an alternative source of insurance.....

I hate insurance companies anyway. I have since my first car collision, a month after I started driving, in 1994

I'm going to take up a formal grievance to get the cancellation fee back as I really don't feel like I cancelled my policy by any reasonable understanding of the word. They're so stupid though, because if I complain to the ombudsman, they have to pay £500 costs to the ombudsman for handling the complaint which is a lot more than the £60 I want off them.

I have already. I'm going to write them a formal letter so I can take it further. I'm pretty sure they're not going to help me. I'm livid with them right now. I have held this exact job on this policy before. Ridiculous system.

I knew I was going to pay a bit more at this address and I was more than willing to do so but the idea that anyone would EVER pay £1600 for car insurance is a joke?! I have cover now that cost me £550 Annoyingly I've had to take out monthly payments on it though as I wasn't expecting to have to renew until December so I didn't have any money set aside for it. In fact I've just spent all my money on a holiday....

  • me23/06/2010 at 22:14

still seems a bit flaky :(

  • me23/06/2010 at 22:20

not the best circumstances for a demo, but here goes anyway. if you have the latest version of google chrome (mine is 5.0), go to this page:

    http://sidepodcast.com/2010/06/23/daily-23rd-june-2010/

there should be a new button just above the comment box, entitled "enable alerts". click it, and select "allow" when prompted, then post a test comment. if all goes well you'll get pop-up desktop alerts every time a new comment is posted on the daily thread.

  • Lukeh23/06/2010 at 22:21

    *tests*

    anyways, goodnight!!
