The fruits of our labours at the Sidepodparty are beginning to come together, as the final Debrief of 2008 has been released on the site. There's a special Christmas carol-shaped treat for anyone listening to the end of the show. Don't forget the brilliant out-take as well.

  • With the success of a Formula 1 themed Christmas Carol under our belts, the big question is, what song shall we murder attempt next year?
  • Toyota announced their forecast of the first ever operating loss this financial year. Then they spoke out again to say they are definitely committed to F1 and not going anywhere. How many times do they have to say it before we believe them though?
  • Max Mosley (drink!) has been speaking to F1.com and admits that they knew about Honda's withdrawal four days before it was announced. Firstly, how amazing that something was able to be kept a secret in this day and age. Secondly, it proves that the cost-cutting announcements really were timed to perfection, and it wasn't just a coincidence.

That's it for today. I've now beaten the record for the latest opening of a Daily thread, but I expect to see just as many comments as on previous days. We'll be in there, chatting away, why not come and join us?

    Bad news for Trulli

"Toyota has dismissed reports that Jarno Trulli could be replaced before the start of the 2009 season" and "team president John Howett told The Times: "We have a contract with Jarno in place.""

No word if anyone added "No, really" to their statements

How's that bad news for Jarno?

I reckon both Toyota and Trulli have one season left in them. Don't think they'll go bye-bye just yet.

F1 wouldn't be the same without the Trulliometer.

  • Jon Waldock23/12/2008 at 11:24

F1 wouldn’t be the same without the Trulliometer.

What would we do of a sunday afternoon when the race is dull and boring and all we have is to occationally shout "TRULLI TRAIN" or "BARICHELLO BUS" for that matter.

    Max Mosley (drink!)

Is there a Max Mosley drinking game? I seem to have missed that one :-(

By the way, I have just seen a report that Max has advised people to "think carefully before applying for the job as FIA President" and that he will wait until June before deciding whether to step down from the job.

I hope when he had that vote of no-confidence it wasn't contingent on him stepping down in 2009... :-(

    So... what's the question? :)

Episode 87 isn't available in iTunes yet, because we didn't have time to make the enhanced version. Pesky sleep got in the way again.

Mp3 is available on this site and on drop.io, and I will update the feeds as soon as is humanly possible.

    Lol.

Maybe you've just spent too much time around the various western govt. whose Idea of Confidence in a person/thing *always* means that they are about to be sacked /h sorry 'resign to spend more time with their children/on their constituency/go and do a EC job instead', fall over with a big completely predictable hole in their finances, or any number of 'disasters' that are then seized upon by tabloid sections of the media and blown up into an even worse situation... hence allowing said govt. to bury anything really important under the avalance of coverage....

depends how often people change their name. r.g's would probably take the best part of a day.

  • Jordan Allen (says \\\"Never tell me the odds\\\")23/12/2008 at 16:09

I thought you would have run a combination search based on the person's E-mail address.... Even if they used two or three or four E-mail addresses, the earilest date is still the one to use.

Your first pass is to match up the E-mail address to the names, then to find the earilest date for each E-mail address.

Even if a person uses two three or four differnt E-mails, looking at the earilest date of four diffent E-mail address is a hell of a lot easier than going thru a database like a Data Entry Clerk....

  • me23/12/2008 at 16:11

You need to be in easy edit mode and hit the return key twice to make line spaces, Jon.

  • Steven Roy23/12/2008 at 18:09

I think it only registers attempts when you beat your fastest time. It has not registered all my recent crashes.

  • Dom23/12/2008 at 18:09

    I'm having R.G's problem.

8 secs before I crashed at the last corner that time... :(

By the way, I got myself some great Sony headphones this morning before work in HMV. The bit where your ears rest slope inwards so that they fit the angle of your ears nice and snug. Plus sound quality is great too and plenty of noise reduction to protect my ears too. Not bad for £12.99.

At least it's something to take the subject away from you know what at the moment :P

    By the way, I got myself some great Sony headphones this morning before work in HMV. The bit where your ears rest slope inwards so that they fit the angle of your ears nice and snug. Plus sound quality is great too and plenty of noise reduction to protect my ears too. Not bad for £12.99. {Scott Woodwiss - 12 comments ago}

I have a funny ear equipment story. Yesterday, the earphones broke for my PDA (they'd been borrowed from a two-year-old £10 MP3 player before spending 20 months on the PDA, so maybe that wasn't so surprising). However, I discovered that nowhere sold earphones small enough for the PDA, because it has a 2.5mm socket.

So I ended up paying £8 for an adaptor and... ...borrowing the headphones from an even older MP3 player!

It seems a bit strange having an adaptor that's worth about 10 times the amount the earphones they're connected to are worth.

Where did you find the adaptor? I have a PDA with a similarly too small socket and would like to use different headphones with it.

Ah... what will they do when you have uni interviews? (well, assuming you are going anyway).

Or am I just the weird one for skitting all over the country at 17/18 on the train on my own (and sorting my own accomodation as well, cos you can't do Newcastle, Salford, and the like from Somerset in a day when the whole day is needed for the interview).

Would your dad be happy(happier) if you could be 'met' halfway or similar?

no idea, probably not. i think it's the thought of me doing it all in a day, and travelling so far away. hopefully mum will come up at least 1/2 way with me... it's not like i don't know the route to Euston Station in London to catch the train to Birmingham....i've been to Euston station loads of times before.

lol i go up to london a lot with friends etc. but that's at most about 1hr 1/2 away. going to Birmingham is twice as long. i'm working on persuading him... but i'm a little unsure if its the meeting people he minds or the travelling home alone at what will end up to be a late time at night.

  • Scott Woodwiss (Back once again for the Renegade Master :P)23/12/2008 at 23:11

Here's a thought - should we all meet up in the morning and go round as a group? Hmm, it's just a thought, although there is the factor of one person wanting to go one place and someone else wanting to go another. That could cause conflict. But then again, it might be fun and interesting to see who enjoys doing what at the show. I'm sure if we were to do it, we'd work something out beforehand. :)

  • Scott Woodwiss (Back once again for the Renegade Master :P)23/12/2008 at 23:12

Yup. £32 is the going rate including booking fee. £8 to park at NEC... and for what? A glorified trade show with little or no redeeming features of the general public. Shame really, could be really good if a little more thought went into it.

  • Scott Woodwiss (Back once again for the Renegade Master :P)23/12/2008 at 23:25

do we think the autosport tickets are just too damn pricey?

Well I guess the Paddock Pass isn't too bad. Me and Dad have had them for the past two years and last year it got you entry into a second "sub-show" which was the Pistonheads Car Show. Plus it's great for going round the back of the Live Action Arena and seeing the cars which take part in the shows. The PH show is taking place again, so if effectively you want access to two shows with one ticket, the PP is worth it. But then Dank does make a valid point also.

nothing wrong with Alonso ;) I met someone yesterday that kinda watched f1 and hated Alonso cause of all that she had read in the papers about him, but apparently hated Button even more. yeah that was an interesting conversation ;)

yay! i just told dad about the tickets, and that we were chatting about Autosport international and he took an interest. Asking when and where it was. The conversation ended with 'well... i'll have a think about it' which is progress from the whole 'NO you are NOT going!' thing he said last week :)

I mean, we always say we go because we can get some great bargains on stuff, but to be honest we haven't bought anything really in a few years. I reckon Saturday might be more fun anyway. There's a karting race and I reckon that would be cool to watch. Especially Me trying to drive competitively. :D

that’s comforting, i was thinking it was cause i was growing up or something

Don't worry - I've *never* felt Christmassy, growing up in a house where there was a birthday a mere 24 hours earlier :-) . Well, apart from the one year that we went to a friends in cornwall (country cottage, rayburn in one room, open fire in the other, traditionally windy outside etc etc etc. DP had fun because he got fed pheasant (he doesn't get that sort of thing here, lol) and midnight mass in a tiny cornish church up the side of a hill taller than the one the friends house was on.

And then there was the year I was and entertainment life form at harrods... I could happily have shot Lorraine Kelley by the end of that, lol. That killed christmas right off. Although it was fun in other ways (like seeing what ejits 'celebrities' are when they are coming to see Father Christmas)

We are totally unChristmassy here anyway - not a light, not a bit of tinsel. nothing rofl. We might get round to building a gingerbread house tomorrow though...

  • Jon Waldock24/12/2008 at 00:15

I hope i feel a bit more christmassy tommorrow (today), i need to buy the inlaws a potted plant (apparently thats what they like :/ ) so i'll need some serious inspiration....

You BUY the Radiotimes? In this day in age? Crumbs. Although I guess taking a highligther pen to a monitor to highlight programmes of interest over the Christmas period isn't quite the same.

As an aside; showing my age, but does anyone remember the days when you would have to buy the RadioTimes for BBC1 and BBC2 and then the TV Times for ITV and Channel 4? What a con. Eee, I feel old!

Don't worry - only this one issue a year. (well, it was two last, because the way that christmas and newyear fell the former ended before the new year began, grrr).

Can't take a highlighter to it though, cos the youngest child took them to the walls earlier in the year and DP threw them out in disgust. Seemed a bit wasteful to get one especially for doing the radio times with, lol.

A promise to visit it at the end of time in town is *almost* enough to guarantee that DS will stay put and not run off :-)

We also have a branch here of the Brickish assoc. But DS is too young to join that, lol.

There is a rally course at Legoland Denmark :-) But you have to be short to go on it, and sadly I'm not short enough :-(

It is currently DS's life ambition to go to Legoland. Preferably the original one in Denmark so he can also stay in the Legoland hotel in the park.

His second ambition atm to to become an engineer so he can either work building models at legoland, or on *big red cars*... which means we at least live in roughly the right bit of the country rofl...

Oh - and you could always buy the bricks and build whatever team colours you wanted in F1 cars... (if you need odd bricks that aren't usually sold singly, there are a couple of specialist websites, incl. the brickish lot, that sell them singly).

So you aren't 'stuck' with ferrari. There's an American company that will custom transfer lego figures for you in the 'right' colours as well.

There are some lovely bits of film somewhere showing the inside workings of the lego factory... Andy do you have the links still?

It was all over the papers^W The Sun a couple of weeks ago - the company that makes a Taliban minifig out of other Lego models.

Any links? We don't have The Sun here. :)

Thanks for the link, Andy. It's just... wow. :)

As I was a LEGO fan years before I became an F1 fan, I'm so happy it's become a topic of discussion here. :D The fact that LEGO is doing F1 models is just... heaven. :D

  • littlepurplegoth24/12/2008 at 01:22

So rather appropriate that it now lives outside a 1970's house (albeit one with sad 1990's double glazing etc... not our doing!!)

  • Journeyer24/12/2008 at 01:23

Apparently, the system doesn't like my declaration of love of Lego - it sent it to the spam queue.

  • Steven Roy24/12/2008 at 01:25

You also need to have seen the Lego rendering of Eddie Izzard’s Darth Vader in the Death Star Canteen routine as well.

Youtube is full of Lego Star Wars sketches and similar things

  • littlepurplegoth24/12/2008 at 01:25

    Nooo - try again...

But isn't lego just the simplest/nicest thing ever?

They've got pre-lego lego in the local toy museum :-) (which just happens to be where the lovely National Museum of Computing is, and also a lot of falling down buildings that housed some brilliant mathematicians :-) )

Our youngest got Lego for Christmas last year. It is scattered across the house, but he plays with it all the time

  • littlepurplegoth24/12/2008 at 01:31

And as easter comes around Lou, they'll be the sussex gathering where you could photograph *lots* of bugs (and buses, and ghias and other things :-) ) if you wanted to. There's usually an autojumble thing on Romney Marsh May ish as well, but that's probably a bit late for an A2 project.

  • Journeyer24/12/2008 at 01:31

i had no idea. lego is the greatest toy, if only because you imagination is the limit.

Agreed. Now that I'm a bit older, I like giving small LEGO sets to my godchildren - it's the best thing around to jumpstart any kid's imagination - not those dang computer games we have today. :)

  • littlepurplegoth24/12/2008 at 01:38

    LOL

Although I did have some thoughts that lego would be the perfect medium for some sidepodcast stop-motion for a review of the year... but sadly because the lego is *everywhere* (as in, bare feet are not a good idea here, lol) it would require a huge effort to do it (plus needing to buy a lot of minifigures, as DS isn't too keen on those so has but a couple... actually, that's a definate plus to having the shop here, because they seem to give away minifigures and goody bags for all sorts of random reasons - the last one was everyone who had a go at building mini-clone stormtroopers against the clock, got to take one home. The winner of each round got to take home 3, and the winner of the day would get something bigger)

i don't have any lego anymore (and have no plans to buy any). i don't have the patience for stop animation either, sadly.

  • littlepurplegoth24/12/2008 at 01:50

Lego is great though - you don't need to move every frame like you do with plasticine or other armature models, and although its a bit 'clunky' because of that you can do a 30 sec clip in about an hour tops as long as its all fixed lens.

Mind you - that was when I was in college, not done any seriously (other than supervising it in 'english' classes) since then, rofl.

i think it could influence our starting point but since our starting point and where we end up bear no relation to each other. As an example the first comments on this item are about Xmas carols and Auld Lang Syne. From there it is a big leap to sleigh racing and stop motion lego musicals

    Where did you find the adaptor? I have a PDA with a similarly too small socket and would like to use different headphones with it. {Andy Taylor}

HMV in Nottingham. At the back of the shop there's a selection of adaptors. If you're anything like me, you'll need to get the assistants to help you find the right one, but they're very good at their job and figured out what I needed quite easily. They even saw the funny side of me using an £8 adaptor to connect some really cheap and tacky earphones... ...though they did suggest I give them a return visit when I wanted something better to listen with.

  • Alianora La Canta24/12/2008 at 12:53

Here’s a thought - should we all meet up in the morning and go round as a group?

That sounds like a good plan. I'll discuss it with Dad - but I can't do so until tomorrow because it's a Christmas present.

    do we think the autosport tickets are just too damn pricey? {me - some time ago}

I think it's a lot better value than the library conferences CILIP keeps suggesting that I attend. The most recent one they wanted me to do was £399 for a two-day conference, not including meals but including four lectures. And the £399 price was after a discount of over £200 for working in a public library...

    So get the train, or park at the station {Andy Taylor}

If you are doing the latter, please please please remember to park at Birmingham International or Birmingham Moor Street. I'm not sure if either is cheaper than the NEC, but the car park for Birmingham New Street is the most expensive in the UK. Two years ago, it was £55 for four hours, and I doubt the price will have gone down noticeably since...

I meant Birmingham International. There are some cheap car parks in the centre of Birmingham, but you have to get there and then get the train out to the NEC, so not really much of a saving, if any.

    Well my dad likes a spot of karting. I might put it to him and say I’ll go halves with him to pay for the tickets and the entry fee. ;) Since I’m working boxing day and getting triple pay AND new years day and getting time and a half pay. {Scott Woodwiss - }

The deadline of November 30th was back when it looked like there was enough interest to get all 20 seats filled. It looks like I've miscalculated quite badly. So if you want to enter yourself and your dad in, I would be very happy to enter you. I've modified the wiki accordingly.

(Note: anybody else who thought "This looks fun... ...oh no I missed the deadline" is also welcome to get in contact with me and arrange something. Even if I end up negotiating payments after the event or something, it's more important to me that the karts are driven than the forms being observed.)

do you have a current list of entrants? couldn't see one on the wiki.

How many people short are you, Alianora? I have a couple of friends who might be interested in coming along.

Also - Lou, isn't your dad a karting fan too? (HINT)

    I never feel christmassy on christmas eve. {Dom}

I've felt Christmassy for the last two hours. Largely because the decorations are finally up and I've had the house traditional Christmas evening tea (a variety of cheeses on crackers).

erm no he isn't. but i asked Em is she was up for coming and she needs to get back to me to see if she can change her shifts but i think she is up for it, that might help me persuade him to let me come :D

    wonderful news.

Oops. Do you think he might want to have a go anyway? ;) Late Christmas present perhaps?

Thank you for the clarification. Personally, I believe I will be using two trains and parking in the (free) car park across the road from my local train station, but this will be a very useful tip for people who don't have that option.

    wonderful news.</blockquote

well i haven't approached him about this again, i'm hoping to catch him in a good mood tomorrow :) (although he is hardly the happiest guy on christmas day, but he might have a drink or two....) If i fail on christmas day, i'm gonna catch him on New Years Eve :P he'll say yes then :D

Looks like the station car park is £6 per day, so only saves a couple of quid :s

In theory, the comment list in the wiki entry is the current entry list. In practise, some people either can't get the wiki working for them or have decided not to post themselves on there.

As far as I am aware, these people definitely are karting:

    me

    Steven Roy

    Neil P.

    patrick

    Andy Taylor

    Scotty D

There are still several "maybes", which I do not wish to comment on unless they actually confirm attendence. There have also been dropouts for various reasons.

So if anyone does want to kart and hasn't confirmed yet, feel free to talk to me and we can arrange something. And if there's anyone you want to persuade to come... ...persuade away :)
