It was a big day in F1 news yesterday, as we saw both the Renault hearing done and dusted, plus the announcement of the 2010 calendar. I wonder if today will be any quieter? Meanwhile, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • The FIA have also agreed to an engine re-equalisation, although it looks like they're more in favour of de-tuning rather than letting speeds get even faster. The question is, how slow will they go if they try and match Cosworth?
  • Meanwhile, Ollie had all the detail on the main news of the day yesterday, with Blog F1 getting there before Autosport half the time.
  • So, in case we have forgotten, it's a race weekend this week, with teams turning up to Singapore for the second annual night race. Nakajima reckons he needs to improve his performance, whilst Force India are really happy they are scoring points on a regular basis now. McLaren are all set to bring their last big upgrade of the year, whilst lots of teams have already given up and are concentrating on 2010. What are we expecting to see this weekend?

That'll do it for now. I don't know about anyone else, but I am still recovering from the weekend. We are gradually getting replays and posts up about the extravaganza, and while we do that, I'll see you in the comments.

righto. i think all of the weekends replay videos are stitched and published:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/category/sidepodradio/

they're also duplicated on the drop.

hopefully all is well, it was like putting a gigantic video jigsaw puzzle together. enjoy!

Its lit overhead and not on pylons, but there is a lot of secondary light around the circuit which could add to the reflections.

I guess its a case of scale, but if the thunderstorms in the area are measured by Sepang i doubt they will race

  • Scott Woodwiss22/09/2009 at 00:22

So I'm looking at trying this class called Bodycombat. It's a fitness program which utilises moves drawn from Karate, Tae-Kwon-Do, Kung-fu, kickboxing, Muay Thai and Tai-Chi, all choreographed to dance music. Looks awesome and I've been meaning to give it a try for ages. It's supposed to give you a really good workout. :P

I have totaly forgotten to look into fencing classes!

Thank you for reminding me! That sounds good, but fencing is too awesome

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 00:23

I've done bodycombat classes before. It's ruddy hard work but it's one of the best classes I've been to I think.

Plus, while it's a unisex program, from what I've seen the classes are most made up for the female gender. Not that that's a bad thing in some ways ;)

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 00:24

I have to say I didn't see any boys there though! I don't know why boys don't tend to go to classes at the gym.

Fencing and combat classes where you get to hit people are exceptions though

  • Scott Woodwiss22/09/2009 at 00:27

Fencing and combat classes where you get to hit people are exceptions though

You get to visualise hitting someone in Bodycombat. Does that count? :D

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 00:27

Apparently you ache all over the next day. Is this true? And it must be a lot of fun too. :P

Erm depends how fit you are. I wouldn't say it's hugely muscle achy. It's a cardio thing mainly although I guess it does tone. I did it a while ago when I was in my fitness freak phase and doing proper toning classes and stuff, I think that aspect was a bit of welcome relief compared to those.....

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 00:28

i ge to visualise hitting people when i walk down the street, there is something inherently satisying about catching some one with a sword

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 00:28

You get to visualise hitting someone in Bodycombat. Does that count? :D

See I wouldn't have said this though, maybe my class was different. You did a lot of punching and kicking and stuff but more as part of an aerobics style exercise programme.

Ah but my sleep has got so behind that I'm back in a normal cycle.... I don't need huuuge amounts to get by. I'm managing to get up for 9am in the morning. I'm not getting lag like I normally do.

Do you understand what I mean? Normally I'll stay up until 3 then sleep in then the next day it'll be 4 etc etc

  • Amy22/09/2009 at 00:41

i dont call those normal hours alison! If i am missing anytime before 10pm tonight my time please yell and wake me because i should not sleep before 10.

If you mean get up at 9 that's ok. Normally I try to go to bed at 1 or 1.15 and sleep to 7.45 (snooze again until 8). And that's not enough.

I'm off this week so I'm sleeping like crazy. I slept from 2 or 3am (can't even remember when I went to bed yesterday) until 10am, then dozed off for another hour.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 00:50

I was just skimming through Google Reader, just the news stuff not the blog stuff. Bit bored. Sort of wasted the day which is not good. Well, it is good for a holiday day because you're not suppose to do stuff, I had planned some stuff which didn't get done though.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 00:58

Lots of 'dead' time which could have been used to listen to more podcasts or something. I caught up with GoForOdd.com, meant to do more though. I did wander into town for a while, and wrote a blog post, and tidied the flat a bit.. so it wasn't too bad! Just feels it.

What do you think the track would be like with Rain? I guess quali & practice would be borderline useable, but on race day, virtually useless.

Those flashing red lights are dangerous anyway.

  • F1Wolf22/09/2009 at 06:12

    rain + smog = trouble

the smog or haze as they call it I had chance to experience at Sepang few years back. it came out of nowhere and in matter of minutes I could barely see the length of the start finish straight. I have no idea how that would go together with the night race and possible rain. well there is no rain in Singapore, there are only rainstorms :-)

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 06:14

exactly. those lights better be effective. or else, we could be seeing another rain-shortened race on the Malay Peninsula.

US Media, you have no idea who you're dealing with. :D Just wait til they see what he did in Australia 2004 or Imola 2002...

That said, the Sacramento FOX affiliate got very unlucky. Had they been ahead of LA, I think JPM would've done both.

JPM was set for 30 minutes of interviews with 9 FOX affiliates. He had only done 8 when the 30 minutes was up, so #9 didn't get anything from JPM. Cue obvious Tremayning from the #9 affiliate reporter.

Basically, NASCAR was begging with JPM to talk to Sacramento (#9). JPM insisted no, and he was off.

Basically, NASCAR was begging with JPM to talk to Sacramento (#9). JPM insisted no, and he was off.

    Um, what's wrong with that?

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 06:29

    Um, what's wrong with that?

The Sacramento affiliate was saying that one of the reasons NASCAR is becoming unpopular is that the drivers were becoming inaccessible. He was implying JPM should've been more flexible with his schedule to talk to them, even if it meant going overtime.

OK I went and watched it... See, I understand Montoya not wanting to continue but the reporter is onto something for sure.

Having said that, why so many interviews for the same network? Why not just one and then send the tape around?

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 06:32

He also said JPM may be getting carried away with his popularity. But JPM was never really a guy who cared for his popularity, I think.

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 06:33

Good idea. I guess that's how it works Stateside. Local affiliates might like to ask their own questions.

I think JPM likes being the bad boy, tbh...

In fairness, modern drivers do a lot of media/PR work and it never seems enough. We don't know why he didn't want to extend the interview, maybe he had a plane to catch or something. Maybe he just wanted to set a limit, who knows?

    Always has, in my opinion.

Indeed. It's always a difficult balance in working with the media.

Gosh the UK exchange rate is a killer.

In my mind I kind of guessed on around £100 per day for tickets on average (race day would be more others less but it would averge)... So £300 was my guess or 330 Euro ish. So 385 Euro doesn't seem that much more than I expected I guess.

Are most people going for Gold here?

I am if Henry Kelly has anything to do with it (this is a reference to a rubbish tv series).

I hadn't really thought about what I was going for. I need a roof and I need a seat and I'd rather be with others than alone.

My plan in my head was simply to guess how much I would pay for it and then go for a ticket level that was near that.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 07:50

I am going to have to write a paper on greek philosopher Plutarch and his relation to the Sugababes now aren't I.

  • Amy22/09/2009 at 07:51

ah yes i hate exchange rates. I see €385 and think "oh yes i paid $415 for my aus gp tickets so that sounds right" but then i remember €385 is roughly $650.

i think we are. but how can you compete with F1 using a glorified GP2 setup?

you can't to start with. but, he's been given the motivation and time on his hands.

what's interesting is everything yesterday said "briatore banned from motorsport". but fia does not equal motorsport. it just equals one sanctioning body and not necessarily the only sanctioning body.

if i were him, i'd make a point of showing everybody that.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 09:57

if i were him, i'd make a point of showing everybody that.

Yeah and I think he might... It's an interesting question... Some people here do watch other motorsport series than F1 but not me. I wonder what it would take for me to watch his series?

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 09:57

if i were him, i'd make a point of showing everybody that.

but will anyone sanction him? even ari and his allies would probably stay away from him - he's just too toxic. todt and co can easily say that they're working with someone who has been proven guilty of fixing a race - and that would effectively kill ari's campaign.

  • me22/09/2009 at 09:58

Yeah and I think he might... It's an interesting question... Some people here do watch other motorsport series than F1 but not me. I wonder what it would take for me to watch his series?

"The agreement entered into by these two companies continues to run its course and Mecachrome is, at present, actively cooperating in the development of these high-performance components for Renault."

that's the most of it really.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 10:20

I think Journeyer has hit the main point... No Superlicence.

However I reckon they would not be able to not provide superlicences to people who drive in Flav's series because that would be against the EU rules thing.

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 10:21

"The agreement entered into by these two companies continues to run its course and Mecachrome is, at present, actively cooperating in the development of these high-performance components for Renault."

So partner, but not Renault-owned. They'll have to choose between Renault and Flav, then, I guess.

  • me22/09/2009 at 10:22

maybe flav will create a superdooperlicence?

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 10:23

Williams planning to race KERS in 2010

No surprises there. Key thing to note, though, is that Williams is now a FOTA member (again). With McLaren and Ferrari recently using KERS to power them to race wins, does this spell the end of a 2010 KERS ban?

  • F1Wolf22/09/2009 at 10:27

maybe flav will create a superdooperlicence?

first he should come up with his version of the events in a form of proper statement or something. I think all we heard from him are bits and pieces of quotes attributed to him here an there

  • me22/09/2009 at 10:27

So partner, but not Renault-owned. They'll have to choose between Renault and Flav, then, I guess.

i'd choose flav. but if flav has any say on the board, he'll choose flav anyhow.

i think, if i were bernie, i'd be rubbing my hands together right now. he could use flavio to get one over max for creating f2.

    but yeah... messy.

  • F1Wolf22/09/2009 at 10:27

I don't think there ever was a ban

  • me22/09/2009 at 10:27

I don't think there ever was a ban

just an agreement from fota not to use it, right?

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 10:28

I don't think there ever was a ban

FOTA agreed not to use it (i.e. banning it amongst each other). But at this rate, such an agreement looks shaky at best.

  • F1Wolf22/09/2009 at 10:30

just an agreement from fota not to use it, right?

yes but that never made it to the regulations. Now that Williams are back in it will be hard to push that through. And McLaren would gladly continue with KERS as well ...

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 10:34

Joe Saward: The Renault decision is not a cop out

A controversial opinion, perhaps, but one put together frankly and eloquently. But I agree with one of the last comments - Renault F1 Team may still have needed a sporting punishment.

  • F1Wolf22/09/2009 at 10:36

    Q. There's been a lot of speculation in the press about AT&T Williams' engine supply for 2010. What can you tell us about it?

Sam Michael: It's definitely going to be a 2.4-litre V8

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 10:36

yes but that never made it to the regulations. Now that Williams are back in it will be hard to push that through. And McLaren would gladly continue with KERS as well ...

That, I think was Max's hand... He wanted them to keep KERS.

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 10:37

Sam Michael: It's definitely going to be a 2.4-litre V8

    :D Bye bye Toyota.

  • F1Wolf22/09/2009 at 10:44

That, I think was Max's hand... He wanted them to keep KERS.

well the money has been spent, the KERS is here, why waste it. let each team decide if they want to run it or not. if they decide to run it, let them decide if they want to develop their own or buy it from someone else

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 10:59

just wondering. hasn't this ruined the phrase "a little bit piquet"?

now it must mean something completely different..

    hahaha... :D

Ah that reminds me of the Spike Milligan poem:

Today I saw a little worm. Wriggling on his belly.

Perhaps he'd like to come inside. And see whats on the telly.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 12:40

But they give you 3 beers a day, everyday if you want to for free!

Is that beer, lager, or tastes-like-water?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 12:42

Is that beer, lager, or tastes-like-water?

They do quite a few... including Blue Moon which is one of my favorite beers

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 12:45

I just accidentally found myself in Maplin and bought one of these:

    http://www.i4u.com/full-review-551.html

It's an Ion universal charger. It charges itself on a USB port and has a cable for USB output and also comes with an iphone adapter and DC 5V adapter. (ooh and a little bag :)

On sale at Maplin for 15 quid. Allegedly and according to the review it has enough store to totally recharge your iphone.

First purchase for the Spa trip :)

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 12:46

Sorry, how much are the tickets to Spa? FOUR HUNDRED AND FORTY EUROS???

That's for Gold 1 at the pit straight. Eau Rouge is three hundred and forty with the discount, or three eighty five if you want a roof.

  • Andy Taylor22/09/2009 at 12:47

That happens to me a lot.

If this is Chris Packham (is that who it was? One of the guys from the really wild show) saying they should be left to die out.

  • Lukeh22/09/2009 at 12:51

I don't think a certain somebody is going to like it...

I just saw it on the news and was about to mention it! What an odd statement for an animal dude to say.

  • Andy Taylor22/09/2009 at 12:51

Sadly it's a) JEREMY VINE and b) the "expert" is saying that pandas should be left to become exctinct. :(

If this is Chris Packham (is that who it was? One of the guys from the really wild show) saying they should be left to die out.

absolutely no idea. i think the gist of the argument is we should all sponsor less cute animals.

It just seems very expensive in comparison to Le Mans...

Its seems incredibly expensive compared to watching on TV :P

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 12:56

I just saw it on the news and was about to mention it! What an odd statement for an animal dude to say.

I'm not advocating this view there is a argument being made in some parts of the animal caring world saying that actually it is bad for "evolution" that we are intervening in the process by keeping weaker animals alive.

This of course makes mistake numero uno of misunderstanding evolution. We are part of the system, therefore what we do or don't do is part of evolution not something other than evolution.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 12:57

drop.io doesn't like my phone, it has only received one pic of the four i sent.. will wait a bit and try again later

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 12:59

It is. But it also may be my only chance to sit at Eau Rouge for an F1 race.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 12:59

    Ah it was Chris Packham

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6844303.ece

It is. But it also may be my only chance to sit at Eau Rouge for an F1 race.

    precisely

  • Amy22/09/2009 at 13:00

also, Alex's day gets better as one of the legs falls of my bed and in my half asleep state I THINK I'M DYING.

    stupid ikea bed.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/09/2009 at 13:00

This of course makes mistake numero uno of misunderstanding evolution. We are part of the system, therefore what we do or don't do is part of evolution not something other than evolution.

So therefore should one species cause another to become extinct or cause it to be saved, either way it is evolution?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/09/2009 at 13:01

also, Alex's day gets better as one of the legs falls of my bed and in my half asleep state I THINK I'M DYING.

    precisely

    Hmm...

  • Amy22/09/2009 at 13:02

Nothing wrong with IKEA - you put it together wrong ;)

thats because on one of the corners there was no indentation in the wood for the leg to sit in so its always kind of just been balancing on there. Unlike my TV cabinet panel that I could take back when it was manufactured wrong, I couldn't take back a mattress base on a tram :D

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 13:02

So therefore should one species cause another to become extinct or cause it to be saved, either way it is evolution?

    Post hoc ergo propter hoc

There's no connection. Decide to kill or decide to save but don't say, "I did this because we shouldn't interfere with evolution".

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 13:02

also, Alex's day gets better as one of the legs falls of my bed and in my half asleep state I THINK I'M DYING.

His argument is based on the fact that they are bad at reproducing and they live on bamboo which is nutritionally rubbish.

He seems to have missed the bit where we ruined all their habitat and poached them to the point of endangerment. But there you go.

If I was a nature person like him, perhaps my argument would be, don't forget there are other animals out there as well as the cuddly ones. Rather than let's abandon the cuddly ones altogether.

we're probably on different lines of thinking here. but why does flav need these things?

he needs an engine... he can do that.

he needs chassis... he can do that.

he need sponsorship...might be tricky, but that is what he does.

GP2 chassis come from Dallara, I forget where GP3 are coming from, is that Dallara as well? If I'm Dallara, do I pick GP1 or Campos Meta?

It also makes sense because when I picked the panda, I was tempted by about seven other species. If I was only slightly richer, I would have sponsored some more things because of the panda.

What's odd is that I was taught Latin at school but we didn't have a motto!

Our school motto was "Strait is the Way" which isn't Latin. It is also missing a g and an h.

By the way, I don't see why discussion of Latin should be so strange - we talk about Rubens all the time. He's Latin. :)

    Hello from High Wycombe!!

    JON!!

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 13:49

Surely he would be better off politicing to get his ban lifted when a new administration comes in either this year or next time round?

Why didn't he go to defend himself in court...... Presumably it's defamation he's suing for?

  • Jon Waldock22/09/2009 at 13:49

    JON!!

    yes sir!

  • me22/09/2009 at 13:50

ehehe yeah i saw. i only found out because i was wearing my FIA-sco t-shirt yesterday and someone on my course came up to me and said "which fiasco are you refering to?" i told him all of them and he told me the results of the hearing.

    Joe has some PK-Positivity! Whoop!

He has made an important mistake and it may ruin his career, but Nelson Jr has money and contacts and you don’t win a British Formula 3 title and five GP2 races against the very best drivers of your generation without having some basic ability.

Perhaps the story is not over yet.

You can always make double the quantity and use a whole can. We made the amounts smaller because we thought it might freak Mr C out a little too much going from 1 (the Postman Pat one) straight to 12.

    Microwave, nope.

Mind you, I do remember reading a book about how you should pretend to be inept in the kitchen - dropping plates everywhere and so on. The idea is that you then never get asked to do any cooking or washing up.

The book also mentions that a good thing to say is "I boiled an egg for half an hour once and the damn thing was still hard."

the 2009 ones are very nice. As far as Aus tickets, here are 2008 and 2009. 2008 is way nicer since they're actually personalised and the picture isn't so boring. My 2010 ones should be here by Christmas :D

2009 ones are nice for Singapore, you mean? Yup, I like their ID more than ours. But I'd still pick ours over theirs if their lanyard is white - because when you reuse them, black looks cooler! :D

Now I shall stop going through my photos and try go back to sleep. I'm too scared to in case my bed collapses.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 16:02

I had no idea tickets were so exciting. I figured they just got you in the gate.

What? I have a wall of tickets.

I don't think you're the only one who doesn't like the sound of their own voice. Had to take off headphones when my voice came on.

  • jpancoast22/09/2009 at 16:16

I really don't like that my cube is right next to one of the floors kitchen areas. Too many people talking during lunch!

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 16:16

I'm catching up on blog posts... just uploaded Spa. :-)

Popping out now, hopefully I'll do Monza later or tomorrow and then I'm all caught up!

btw was I the only one to promote Sidepodradio on their blog..?

I just realised how similar the accent there and the accent here (Dorset) actually are when written down, even though they sound completely different..

    Hi RG.

I'm going for a drive to drop off a few bits, back later.

    Hello peoples

Just got word of Saturday's events for my cousin's Stag Do

Karting at Sandown Park followed by an afternoon at the races at Ascot

Am really looking forward to it, w00t!

  • jpancoast22/09/2009 at 16:32

Is there a place on the internet to go to to listen to radio conversations during a race? Or do they encrypt or scramble it so that noone can listen in?

Is there a place on the internet to go to to listen to radio conversations during a race? Or do they encrypt or scramble it so that noone can listen in?

    Good question

I don't imagine they broadcast them, FOM keep a tight reign on stuff like that but you never know

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 16:42

I think i have somehow gotten better at hearing myself...

    It's a weird thing...

After Christine came to visit Katherine said... "hold on Christine sounds exactly the same in real life as she does on the podcasts... That must mean I actually sound like I do on recordings... How can anyone stand the sound of my voice?"

Katherine has a perfectly lovely voice of course. It's just a normal reaction to people. I, and I imagine Christine have heard soooo many recordings of our own voices that now it sounds exactly like me.

I still get annoyed when I listen back to myself about what I'm saying and the number of "er"s I sometimes get into but other than that I'm fine with it.

On a side note to do with the "ers" I don't think there are any "ers" during the Dr Giggles segments of my shows. I must only "er" when I'm doing my own accent... odd!

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 16:44

Apparently it has something to do with the acoustics of listening to your own voice from inside your head, as opposed to others who are [quite naturally] out side of it ;)

  • jpancoast22/09/2009 at 16:45

After Christine came to visit Katherine said... "hold on Christine sounds exactly the same in real life as she does on the podcasts... That must mean I actually sound like I do on recordings... How can anyone stand the sound of my voice?"

I'm guessing we sound different to ourselves because the vibrations can get to our ears via our skull, sinuses, facial tissue, etc., and doesn't have to travel through the air.

Don't know if that's really the case or not. But I can't listening to my recorded voice either, definitely sounds different to me.

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 16:46

Apparently it has something to do with the acoustics of listening to your own voice from inside your head, as opposed to others who are [quite naturally] out side of it ;)

That's what I read too. But I do find it interesting that Alex, Christine, and maybe even Mr C now think that their voice sounds the same as the recording of their voice.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 16:46

That's what I read too. But I do find it interesting that Alex, Christine, and maybe even Mr C now think that their voice sounds the same as the recording of their voice.

They are a lot more used to hearing recordings of their voice than most of us

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 16:46

I think the accent is my biggest problem, i never relly lived with people with the same accent growing up so i sort of have some crazy mutent thing going on.

Its a bit odd because depending on where i am my accent changes, i hear recordings of my self from diffferent ages and i sound completly different!

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 16:47

I have just listened to WSLIIA, all the contestants were so brilliant,we should see if we can send a link of the commentators thing to Jason Swales! :D

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 16:48

Its a bit odd because depending on where i am my accent changes, i hear recordings of my self from diffferent ages and i sound completly different!

Influence of the environment, I guess.

I would note something - my accent of certain English words changes depending on who I talk to. At times I sound refined, other times I sound "barok" (local term meaning "heavily accented").

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 16:49

I have just listened to WSLIIA, all the contestants were so brilliant,we should see if we can send a link of the commentators thing to Jason Swales! :D

I still very much dislike the sound of my own voice, but to do as much podcasting as we do, at some point you just have to get over it.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 16:50

Apparently it has something to do with the acoustics of listening to your own voice from inside your head, as opposed to others who are [quite naturally] out side of it ;)

You say that it's natural that the other people are outside of your head.... Does that mean you are calling Dr Giggles unnatural?

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 16:51

You say that it's natural that the other people are outside of your head.... Does that mean you are calling Dr Giggles unnatural?

No, that's called bipolar disorder ;)

I would note something - my accent of certain English words changes depending on who I talk to. At times I sound refined, other times I sound "barok" (local term meaning "heavily accented").

I really do have a accent on me when I speak. In real life though, I really sound nothing like it. Always thought it was the phone, but maybe it isn't.

At least I'm recognisable with my voice. :)

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 16:52

I still very much dislike the sound of my own voice, but to do as much podcasting as we do, at some point you just have to get over it.

It's probably just that I'm an egoist then ;)

I'm not saying I like the sound of my voice really, but that now it sounds like me when I hear it back.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)22/09/2009 at 16:52

Eddie Jordan loves the sound of his own voice! :D

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 16:53

I think thats the revelation i had this evening... Its so much nicer not having to cringe!

There's a reason I discourage everyone from the archives :)

That's what I read too. But I do find it interesting that Alex, Christine, and maybe even Mr C now think that their voice sounds the same as the recording of their voice.

i've never really had an issue with hearing my voice? i, like alex, have been recording my voice since forever. and i frequently listen to our stuff two or three times, with a critical ear. so it just is what it is.

my "umms" annoy me, but everybody's "umms" annoy me. if someone on leo's show does it a lot, i stop listening.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 16:59

I'm really not sure how Christine does talking without umming or erring. I'm starting to think she must be thinking about what she is going to say before she opens her mouth. Could that work? ;)

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 17:01

Joe Saward: Thoughts on the F1 Calendar

It became a bit of a rant about the costs of covering F1 (and how stay-at-home journalists are pushing them out with lower prices), but the article makes sense as a whole.

Thing is, when you have so many Asian races, it'll always be difficult for European journalists to travel out to cover all of them, back-to-back or not. It's the reality that is F1 today.

Also, the discussion in this article triggered the creation of a PayPal button on his blog.

my "umms" annoy me, but everybody's "umms" annoy me. if someone on leo's show does it a lot, i stop listening.

The thing which really bugged me was my constant repition of one word.

Its not even a word I use regularly! I guess it was nerves because i havent ever done anything like that before really. Other than on Qik which doesnt really count!

  • Journeyer22/09/2009 at 17:02

I'm really not sure how Christine does talking without umming or erring. I'm starting to think she must be thinking about what she is going to say before she opens her mouth. Could that work? ;)

Very good point. I know she has talking points, but I don't think she has a script - mightily impressive.

  • me22/09/2009 at 17:02

Must be difficult not being able to listen to any of the parade laps you are on with me ;)

hehe. i don't like the production of the audio on any live show we do.

the outputted audio doesn't go through all of the post-production processing that non-live podcasts normally do. therefore the lack of coherence annoys me way before anything else does when listening back.

  • me22/09/2009 at 17:03

Nonsense. I can read aloud, I can't talk. People ask me about gearboxes and I just freeze up.

She was just phreaked out you were just a disembodied voice floating around near Christine, but because you have no physical body she wasn't sure it wasn't just a podcast being played ;)

I'll stop that now... I *know* Christine doesn't like that...

Ummm she did but she hears more of Christine's podcasts because a) Christine does many more than you do and b) Christine's solo ones are shorter so they quite often get put on the loudspeaker!!! And I wonder if it was a girl thing too.

  • me22/09/2009 at 17:15

Who Christine? Absolutely if she wants in...

Katherine as I'm sure you remember was very briefly in the first episode of goforodd podcast: http://goforodd.com/2009/08/go-for-odd-podcast-episode-1/ talking about a snail... But it was very brief...

    i demand more than that!

Absolutely... The current plan is to do the next one with a mate called Kris and my brother at the same time. And then after that get fourstar back but with Kat.

I really need to work out a better way of recording this though... Considering where I am starting from... Scratch... How should I go about recording 3 people at the same time and being able to isolate their voices?

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 17:24

[hopes that is a "No"] :D

Maybe Bassano can wear the hat :)

Either of those is fine for me.

Hello all, just reading the discussion about hearing how you sound. I've never had a problem with it, I know how I sound to other people because people have always got me, my sister & my mother confused on the 'phone. I just have to listen to them speak to know what I'm like. Don't other people have the same with their family?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 17:31

DO you guys know the chandos off charring cross raod?

Its very cheap... and quite a good meeting place

  • lou22/09/2009 at 17:32

So it's Jon, Lou or Scott to pass their test first

hehe Jon will probably beat me since he's had more experience. i'm just hoping to pass by christmas, which hopefully isn't too much to ask, i've had quiet a few lessons already :D

hehe Jon will probably beat me since he's had more experience. i'm just hoping to pass by christmas, which hopefully isn't too much to ask, i've had quiet a few lessons already :D

You'll get there! Are you in your last year at school? I'm just so glad I passed my test while I was still at school even though I then didn't drive for years. I'd never have time to do it now.

  • lou22/09/2009 at 17:34

Where are we meeting on thuirs? I am thinking of spending the afternoon in London if i can...

Either Waterloo or across the river, I quite fancied ending up in Covent Garden

i'll have to have an eye out for you lot if our class gets the day off to go to london and visit galleries and do first hand sketches of architecture. although we'll probably be on the train by the evening..

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 17:34

lou, when I was at school we had 1st year, 2nd year etc up to 6th form. What does year 13 mean?

  • me22/09/2009 at 17:36

Hello all, just reading the discussion about hearing how you sound. I've never had a problem with it, I know how I sound to other people because people have always got me, my sister & my mother confused on the 'phone.

hey janna. does your sister sound like how you hear yourself in your head?

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 17:36

lou, when I was at school we had 1st year, 2nd year etc up to 6th form. What does year 13 mean?

    Upper 6th

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 17:36

We plan on staying up till train services resume in the morning :)

  • Janna22/09/2009 at 17:37

hey janna. does your sister sound like how you hear yourself in your head?

Nearly, a bit higher, I think there's more treble in my voice than I hear from the inside

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 17:37

    Upper 6th

Maybe that's our slang as well thinking about it. It's the last year of school education. You could have left at age 16 at the end of year 11 but some people stay on to do yr 12+13 to get their A Levels.

  • Janna22/09/2009 at 17:37

    Upper 6th

Thanks Alison, sorry to be so old :)

For me it was Upper 6th & Lower 6th too

    interesting. ta.

It is but I can understand it. We had 6 one and 6 two at my school

Also, it's even more so when I sing (& when I hear my sister/Mum singing). The tone is lighter than I hear inside. It's difficult to explain, I hear a more rounded sound than comes out on a recording.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 17:42

Apparently we have to be at the pub at 17:59 (Guinness Mean Time) which is officially when Arthur's Day celebrations kick off

could just be the microphone not quite having the range to pick up the lower end. are they studio mics?

  • lou22/09/2009 at 18:02

It is funny how they change the naming though.... There's not really any reason for it!

yeah i know. we are called both upper sixth and year 13 students.. it's mainly year 13 on exam forms i think, very strange.

Seniors are in College (Uni), like Freshman

  • jpancoast22/09/2009 at 18:07

Really? I've never heard anyone called a Senior or a 4th grader or however that works....

Generally, in 1st - 8th grade, it's 1st grader, 2nd grader, etc. Then Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior for high school, and likewise for college (Freshman,e tc.)

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:09

I do like Snowy's Icons that can be hugely magnified [no idea why though]

    From this to this

Also, the screenshot are time stamped now, instead of being screenshot 1 or whatever

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 18:09

In the states, at least. Not sure how you guys do it in the UK :)

We start at reception at the age of 4/5 then it's year 1 all the way up to 13 (you're allowed to leave at 11) Then you'd go to uni. Some schools don't do the last 2 years and people go to a college to do them.

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 18:11

In the states, at least. Not sure how you guys do it in the UK :)

We have reception then year1, 2, 3... all the way to 13

    I also had 3rd Form ,4th, 5th and then lower 6th and upper 6th

    3rd form was year 9 ,4th year 10 e.t.c..

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:12

I do like Snowy's Icons that can be hugely magnified [no idea why though]

it's about resolution independence. but as yet i've not looked into what exactly that means.

  • Janna22/09/2009 at 18:12

We start at reception at the age of 4/5 then it's year 1 all the way up to 13 (you're allowed to leave at 11)

That's how it works now. When I was in Primary/Junior school I don't remember them being called Year anything it was just Mrs So & So's class. We only got year numbers at Secondary School and then it started from 1st year etc.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 18:14

DO you guys know the chandos off charring cross raod?

    I was there last night!

Actually sounds quite similar, except we go up to 12, and I guess your 13 would be our Freshman year in College. Not sure when folks are allowed to leave, though, but the full education is kindergarten + grades 1 - 12.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:17

it's about resolution independence. but as yet i've not looked into what exactly that means.

iPhone Apps don't have to be configured to a certain pixel size

There are other reasons but I remember that being a big one

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 18:17

That's how it works now. When I was in Primary/Junior school I don't remember them being called Year anything it was just Mrs So & So's class. We only got year numbers at Secondary School and then it started from 1st year etc.

To add another layer of confusion, it's different in Scotland, where you can start at a different age, everyone doesn't start at the same time of year and they start at 1 not reception. They also split the numbering in the middle in an odd way.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:19

no it isn't. The awesome bar is like the way in Safari 3 it finds recent places you've visited in your history.

Chrome has the search bar as the address bar. Greatest feature in Chome.

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:29

I really need to work out a better way of recording this though... Considering where I am starting from... Scratch... How should I go about recording 3 people at the same time and being able to isolate their voices?

the only way to isolate voices is to provide each person with a microphone. either hand-held or tie mic. failing that you pass one around like we did at the party-in-the-park.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:29

phew what a busy afternoon.. made the longish journey to Canterbury to take my driving theory, passed my driving theory, and made the longish journey back home, still with a headache.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:36

I will be there for that although i will not be drinking the black stuff...

Well, more of a suggestion really :)

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 18:37

How is Katherine anyways? Ankle better? :(

she hasn't been to work today but is hoping to go in tomorrow.

I have a supply of dark chocolate with me.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 18:37

is that the with firewire model, or the without firewire model?

please don't laugh at me. How do I tell?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 18:37

I like that place. The chandos has no guiness I don't think

It doesnt, it is samuel smiths... its a bit of a Marmite pub

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:37

    Do we?

    Whoop!

    Okay, glad it's improving :)

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:39

    It's not USB

If it's over a year old, it will

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:40

please don't laugh at me. How do I tell?

hehe. forget i asked. go with usb :)

you need to buy a usb sound-box-thingy that's compatible with snow leopard. i can't advise you however, as i picked alesis and it's awful.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:40

    It's not USB

The symbol looks like this, and will be next to your USB ports

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:40

If it's over a year old, it will

are you sure? there was a period when the non-pro's did not come with firewire?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 18:41

On Arthur's Day, I'm not sure that place is on the shopping list then :)

I have just realised the pub you suggested isnt too far from...

THE PUB WE MUST NOT GO TOO!

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 18:41

On Arthur's Day, I'm not sure that place is on the shopping list then :)

I'm drinking guiness on Thursday. The Coal Hole sounds best to me. Although it does get rammo. It was Richard Harris's haunt before he passed on.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:41

Alex doesn't have the MacBook Alu

    Which is?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 18:42

All the polycarbonates have it I think

    Looks good to me!

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:42

How was the tour, I figured they were your pics on the drop

Good thanks! Quite long, which worked up a nice thirst for our free beer.

Unfortunately only 2 of the 4 pics I sent have appeared. Last time this happened it took three days to appear.

I did put a subject on one of them..

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:42

ahh cool. i have no idea. i just know for a while they were to be avoided.

I wonder if there's an App to count it down?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 18:43

    Which is?

    The NZ one

  • Janna22/09/2009 at 18:43

the problem is that I stopped owning macs just after FireWire came in and came back just after FireWire got kind of hidden. So it's a bit of a mystery to me.

you probably don't need it. it's good when you get to 8 simultaneous inputs and above.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:44

You don't remember the conversation on Fri?

    I purposely forgot that bit.

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:44

  • Bassano Clapper22/09/2009 at 18:45

    I purposely forgot that bit.

    It's optional

Are you getting the train home?

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 18:46

okay. So I get my mics and a USB mixing thing and I record all this in garage band?

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 18:46

Oh yes, we won't be going there

Shall we say [#sorry Amy] now?

We are definatly not going there, we will be fine ;)

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:47

Anyone doing anything beforehand? Just wondering which train to get.

  • Andy Taylor22/09/2009 at 18:47

All the polycarbonates have it I think

If you're talking about Firewire, then yes, all the plastic Macbooks have FW400

All the Macbook Pros have FW800, with older models like mine and Mr C's sporting both.

Only the aluminium 13" Macbook (not Pro) and Macbook Air have USB only.

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:48

Are you getting the train home?

    Yup.

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:48

    Random Q:

If you are using 2 screens with windows Xp is there anyway to maximise a video on one screen and keep it maximised even if you are clicking on the other screen?

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 18:50

    yup. got it one.

well in several but awesome. Thanks :)

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 18:50

If you are using 2 screens with windows Xp is there anyway to maximise a video on one screen and keep it maximised even if you are clicking on the other screen?

It depends which program you are using. iPlayer can be a pain for that - VLC is very good. With VLC just drag it to the other screen and double-click

  • me22/09/2009 at 18:51

well in several but awesome. Thanks :)

last bit of advice. work up to four mics! start with two, then add a third etc. tis obvious, but it's easy to get carried away :)

5live news. they're bringing in a realtime-doohickey-thing for interactive commenting during shows. doesn't mention if it'll apply to f1 or not though.

  • Neil Denham22/09/2009 at 18:53

the more expensive the better, but the expensive ones need phantom power, which means your usb box must also provide phantom power. what's your whole budget?

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 19:27

you mean one you put in the middle of a table? don't have any experience of that sadly.

I just think the answer is that flow of conversation is the most important thing... The sound quality can be worked on, but if people can't talk over each other when they think of something funny we're sunk. It shouldn't end up sounding like that all the time but the conversation has to progress. People need to loosen up to do the kind of show I'm doing.

And if people have to pass the microphone it will be a problem I think.

The thing was that with fourstar and I we had enough radio experience to be able to hear when we'd messed something up and go back and link and continue in a somewhat live way (pretty much undermined by the music in the background). None of my other currently lined up people have that so I need to be careful to get flow right or they'll freeze I think. It's not like I'm traditionally interviewing them I want it to totally seem like a "normal" conversation.

  • Alex Andronov22/09/2009 at 19:29

Ah. Scans are harder. You will need something to do OCR on them.

I have some OCR stuff I may be able to get to that in a bit.

Unfortunately it doesn't produce formatted HTML so if you need to get into the bones of it for whatever reason, you are presented with a block of near-continuous text.

Basically it lets you do blog posts in your chosen theme and add pics, videos, links, etc. It is REALLY, REALLY simple. and it's awesome :D

They did mention him. And the French President.

I have done some brief research to answer Christine's question asked on the sidepodspace show.

The sky weighs 570,000,000,000 adult Indian elephants and Christine wanted to know how many pandas it weighed. Based on my calculations the sky weighs 15.200.000.000.000 adult pandas or 15,200,000,000,000,000 baby pandas. That is an awful lot of baby pandas. By a rough count that is one and a half million baby pandas per person.

  • me22/09/2009 at 22:47

Going to have a play and see if I can knock something together by Sunday - race review / week's news round up and thoughts and see how I get on before I buy any expensive kit.

    that's very cool.

are you interested in submitting some answers to the f1 bloggers show once you get to grips with things?

    i don't want one. so she'll need 3 million.

  • Adie22/09/2009 at 22:48

Thanks - and yeah I'd love too if you don't mind.

    Thanks for asking :)

  • Andy Taylor22/09/2009 at 22:49

I think even Christine would find 3 million baby pandas less than adorable.

I've got a few ideas how I'd like things to work, and I get bored listening to myself sometimes so I'd like to get guest bloggers on to chat about the sport / plug their blog and have a laugh with really.

    Yeah, saw that.

The league's 'Fit and proper test' is very subjective anyway. Won't go into it now, but you should look at AFC Bournemouth's track record for the 12 months post admin under the old regime, now very much thankfully gone.

I've got my theory test on October 10th and I'm at 5DAY all this week getting lessons on it. Today was all about the hazard perception test. Every mock exam I did I passed :D

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 23:03

    Pat went on (a) tour

I've got my theory test on October 10th and I'm at 5DAY all this week getting lessons on it. Today was all about the hazard perception test. Every mock exam I did I passed :D

Surely risking failing the test is cheaper than your lessons? Has the world moved on?

  • Adie22/09/2009 at 23:04

Bornemouth are slightly less high profile than Flav though...

Shh!!!! Haha, I mean the people who bought the club and ran it post Admin having passed the 'fit and proper test' if they stuck to that criteria he's got no worries.

I think Flab's sticking point is the clause that you fail the test if you have any unspent sporting convictions regardless of the sporting discipline. I guess the FIA's ban leaves him pretty much hecked.

I see he's planning on suing - give James Allen's blog post about an 'un-named' Renault insider dishing the dirt I do wonder if he should bother.

However, F1 does love dragging itself through the gutter, so I'm sure this isn't the end of it.

  • Andy Taylor22/09/2009 at 23:04

    YAY, well done Lou!

Another step on the road to being a driver. :)

In my day we just got asked some questions at the end of the test.

In my Grandfather's day there was no test.

  • Amy22/09/2009 at 23:06

so you lot sit your theory test after youve been driving a while? So what test do you do to get your license in the first place?

  • Adie22/09/2009 at 23:07

so you lot sit your theory test after youve been driving a while?

I wish! Failed my theory first time - that's what you get for not learning it. 1 mark of a pass though - that's just mean!

  • Sara (not Sarah)22/09/2009 at 23:08

I've totally gotta go to sleep now. Night all

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 23:08

so you lot sit your theory test after youve been driving a while? So what test do you do to get your license in the first place?

None. You send off for a provisional license that means you can only drive with an experienced driver in the car with you. The experienced driver is responsible for your actions and their consequences.

You then sit the theory test and once you've passed that can sit the practical test, then you can drive alone.

  • Scott Woodwiss22/09/2009 at 23:08

Surely risking failing the test is cheaper than your lessons? Has the world moved on?

Ah you see this is the best bit - because my aunt and uncle run 5DAY, I get to sit in on the theory lessons this week and take over driving lessons from pupils who have to cancel and pull out, and I don't have to pay anything! :D

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 23:08

Why is someone posting brewery pictures on dropio?

    Ahh, they are finally working!

I went on a tour earlier.

Not to mention that he declared he had no obligation to attend the hearing and didnt...

And continued to deny he wasnt involved depite the mountain of evidence to the contrary...

    Joe blogged it

  • Scott Woodwiss22/09/2009 at 23:11

What on earth can they teach you, its all common sense surely!

It's an intensive driving course so they get you practicing on mock exams on computers so that you know what to expect when sitting your theory and out on your practical.

  • Nick22/09/2009 at 23:12

Some of the stuff you wouldn't just know. Like the difference between a pecan and a toucan crossing.....

Thats obvious, pelicans are colourful so they have traffic lights!

I learned that in primary school!

  • Pat W22/09/2009 at 23:13

Thats obvious, pelicans are colourful so they have traffic lights!

So does a Puffin, which is the one with more sensors. I'm not sure what a Toucan is.

    Night

  • Alison22/09/2009 at 23:13

There are pelican, toucan and pecan crossings that all involve traffic lights

    Then there's a zebra crossing that doesn't.

  • Scott Woodwiss22/09/2009 at 23:14

So does a Puffin, which is the one with more sensors. I'm not sure what a Toucan is.

It's a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. How you remember this is Toucan can mean "two can" cross.

  • Steven Roy22/09/2009 at 23:14

Never heard of a different name for that. This is what happens when they invent new stuff after your test.

I am moving to the other daily.

  • lou22/09/2009 at 23:18

i never did any theory lessons, just learnt how to drive and had practical lessons, then spent a day doing the mock questions over and over again on the CD and practising hazard perception, then sat the test today. :)
