Hey everyone! I’m not going to start with my usual countdown to the Bahrain GP because as I’m sure you all know there is currently a question mark over whether or not it will happen. Instead I will simply say this;

The start of the 2011 season may be in 21 days… or…. Possibly 33 days!

If you’re getting a bit down at the thought of another month of off season (although it’s completely understandable given the circumstances) here’s a cute little cartoon to brighten your day.

I thought I’d start the day with a big collection of photography links for you all to enjoy.;

- Haven’t you always wanted to camouflage like this?

- Have you ever wondered what it would look like if you put hundreds of boring tourist photos of the same place together?

- how awesome are 360 panoramas?

- Remember that beloved photographic effect tiltshift? Well here are some awesome examples.

- Black and white photographs can be really stunning, here are some examples.

-Lastly lets finish with some just plain beautiful images.

Oh, maybe we should talk about f1 for a bit.. Vettel was fastest again in testing yesterday.

Moving on..lastly..

I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do next Sunday's daily, would anyone like to take over for a week and do a guest daily? Any cover would be appreciated!

Podcast of the Week

My podcast of the week is a video podcast. Infact it's the first F1 video (i think!) that our favourite sidepodcast couple created for us all.

Enjoy!!

I’ll also leave you with some uplifting and cute sayings. Have a lovely day!

Exploring the daily links now and it echos what I tried to say earlier. Every Daily poster brings their own flair. For me, I love the undiscovered imagery they that Lou brings me

I hope you find it as inspirational as I do

I love the 360 panoramas. The tilt shifts are as good as I have seen. The multi-tourist photos should not work but they do. Some better than others.

    Gahhhh - dammit Bernie

@andrewbensonf1: Bernie Ecclestone tells BBC Sport he will leave the call on the Bahrain Grand Prix to the Crown Prince: http://bbc.in/dJG2mH

  • F1Wolf20/02/2011 at 09:18

    Gahhhh - dammit Bernie

he still does not get it that is not only about the safety of F1 convoy ...

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:21

he still does not get it that is not only about the safety of F1 convoy ...

Not just that, but this race is the "baby" of the Crown Prince... I mean, jeez, just grow a pair and call it. If he gets sued, I'm sure there is more than enough evidence at this stage to pacify a court case.

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 09:36

His comments come as the Sunday Times reported that some teams would boycott the grand prix if it went ahead.

F1 insiders have told BBC Sport that the teams' contractual commitments to Ecclestone's Formula 1 Management company mean they would be obliged to attend the race if it is held.

    From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9402871.stm

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 09:36

How can they make a team attend? Or more precisely what would be the penalty for non-attendance?

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:38

How can they make a team attend? Or more precisely what would be the penalty for non-attendance?

disqualification from the world championship with all team's results annulled

  • F1Wolf20/02/2011 at 09:38

How can they make a team attend? Or more precisely what would be the penalty for non-attendance?

not really sure but there was a reason for all the Michelin teams to do the installation lap at Indy 2005 ...

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:39

not really sure but there was a reason for all the Michelin teams to do the installation lap at Indy 2005 ...

once you do a warm-up lap, you are classified as having started

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 09:39

disqualification from the world championship with all team's results annulled

Is that a guess or is that something you've seen?

  • F1Wolf20/02/2011 at 09:40

disqualification from the world championship with all team's results annulled

hardly could be done if all teams decided not to go. not easy for the Bahrain owned McLaren though...

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:40

Is that a guess or is that something you've seen?

pretty certain that's the rules now. It changed in the mid-90's

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:42

@jakehumphreyf1: For those asking. Just because the race goes ahead doesn't mean the BBC have to be there. We'll make a call, and I know what mine will be...

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 09:44

I was trying to guess which team it was... For some reason I immediately thought it would be Ferrari... because they often act all by themselves... But most of the leading F1 teams have ties in the area... Except possibly Red Bull... Could they be the ones?

  • F1Wolf20/02/2011 at 09:46

Except possibly Red Bull... Could they be the ones?

Ah Renault are a top team I'd say...

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:53

Don't Ferrari have Middle eastern ties (probably with Abu Dhabi though)

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 09:54

Don't Ferrari have Middle eastern ties (probably with Abu Dhabi though)

Yes indeed... Ferrari, McLaren and Williams all have ties in the area.

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 09:56

Yes indeed... Ferrari, McLaren and Williams all have ties in the area.

Great. Another race with only 6 cars. Ironically enough, I dug out a recording of the 2005 US Grand Prix earlier on... just to see fans thrown water bottles at the track. Bahrain may present the drivers with missiles of a different kind though

  • Nick20/02/2011 at 10:17

Don't Ferrari have Middle eastern ties (probably with Abu Dhabi though)

Abu Dhabi sold their Ferrari shares back at the end of last year.

I think the only current ties are with the theme park.

But the Gulf is a huge market for the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and now McLaren and Lotus . Not so much for Red Bull though

  • Bassano20/02/2011 at 12:00

I just cooked a cheeseburger with what I hope is beef that I got at Tesco with a ton of other food for the week. Yum. A hot meal for a weary traveler.

    Yay, time zone parity!

    How was your flight?

  • Bassano20/02/2011 at 12:01

    Good mid-day peoples.

    Hey Christine, Kai

  • Kai in Prague20/02/2011 at 12:01

    How was your flight?

    hehe

Oh god. I'll put it in the blog, but it was not comfortable. It was long. We were delayed out of JFK due to high winds. *gulp* I was so scared on take off.

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/02/2011 at 12:01

This time of day you'll find more of me and less of Mr C :)

  • Kai in Prague20/02/2011 at 12:03

    How was your flight?

And the people next to me were a nightmare. They had 6 glasses of wine and passed out, crowding me in my seat. 9 hours of this!

  • Kai in Prague20/02/2011 at 12:03

This time of day you'll find more of me and less of Mr C :)

I always saw that but haven't experienced it. :)

True. I did watch Wall Street on the plane and I got to see Social Network again. I'm glad I didn't pay for Wall Street. Well, you know, separately. Bleck.

  • Lukeh20/02/2011 at 12:11

Lukeh, it was awful. Hilariously awful.

Are you absolutely positive your flight wasn't part of a sitcom or something? You didn't accidentally enter a TV program? Reality can't be that awful!

  • Bassano20/02/2011 at 12:11

How odd. You should've recorded it as a soundbite for your blog :D

Parts of Prague seem just like New York, other parts are like CT, and some reminds me of Sweden. Then a tram goes by and I'm wondering if the KGB is watching me. You can feel the history here. I can't wait to get some rest and go out and explore with my camera.

  • Kai in Prague20/02/2011 at 12:16

I'm an hour ahead of you. That's freaking me out. I'm usually 5 hours behind.

    It was most excellent.

  • Lukeh20/02/2011 at 13:42

I was going to blog the other day about this but I think I'm really starting to change my stance o DVDs now. I seem to have bought loads over the years that I've only watched once and whilst I'd have enjoyed them, I have no desire to watch them again. Only the absolute favourites get watched more than once, and I think my brain is slowly starting to look at iTunes movies a lot more and stuff like that, much cheaper too than buying a DVD you only really watch once...

Of course, the risk is you renting a film and really really love it then I know I'd go out and buy it on DVD so in the end I'd end up paying more.

  • Janna20/02/2011 at 13:44

Of course, the risk is you renting a film and really really love it then I know I'd go out and buy it on DVD so in the end I'd end up paying more.

Overall you would probably spend less because you would only buy the DVDs you really wanted (or you could ask for them for Christmas/birthday) and renting is cheaper than buying things you don't want.

  • Christine20/02/2011 at 13:45

Of course, the risk is you renting a film and really really love it then I know I'd go out and buy it on DVD so in the end I'd end up paying more.

But, I imagine that would happen only occasionally so overall you would probably save? (money and space!)

  • Lukeh20/02/2011 at 13:45

But, I imagine that would happen only occasionally so overall you would probably save? (money and space!)

    That's true.

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 13:46

Of course, the risk is you renting a film and really really love it then I know I'd go out and buy it on DVD so in the end I'd end up paying more.

The thing is... How many times do you watch them more than once in quick succession? For me that's really quite rare. And often in between times new versions have come out etc.

Also there are very few films that I feel like I'd like to watch twice but not more than twice. And I feel happy to give a bit of a hat tip to those best films by buying them.

So rental first and then buy for the second viewing. Turns out not many get to that second stage.

However... Annoyingly lots of films aren't yet available to rent on iTunes :(

  • Janna20/02/2011 at 13:47

    Hello all

I use LoveFilm for renting films because it is a fixed cost. You have to decide what you want on your list of films to send you but they do have a new Watch Online service too.

  • Mr C20/02/2011 at 13:47

Of course, the risk is you renting a film and really really love it then I know I'd go out and buy it on DVD so in the end I'd end up paying more.

why can't you rent on itunes, and if you like the movie, buy it on itunes? can't see any use for DVD's at all any more.

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 13:48

why can't you rent on itunes, and if you like the movie, buy it on itunes? can't see any use for DVD's at all any more.

    Absolutely

why can't you rent on itunes, and if you like the movie, buy it on itunes? can't see any use for DVD's at all any more.

I dunno. I'm used to having DVDs I suppose so it feels kind of wierd saying I own a movie on my laptop. My brain still hasn't fully adjusted to the world of mfc :)

It's really similar with games too. I've bought plenty of games but once I play them and beat them, unless they are the bestestgameveerrrr then I just don't have an interest in playing them again. Although in terms of non-DVD based stuff for this I own about 6 or 7 times more worth of stuff downloaded on my Xbox than I actually do on disk, the spectrum is completely turned on it's head in that aspect of my wierd mind

  • F1Wolf20/02/2011 at 13:50

Of course, the risk is you renting a film and really really love it then I know I'd go out and buy it on DVD so in the end I'd end up paying more.

when the world looks back on the last two decades, i am convinced it will conclude CD's and DVD's were a terrible idea.

we should've gone with rewritable NES cartridges.

  • Lukeh20/02/2011 at 13:53

we should've gone with rewritable NES cartridges.

    YES!

Plus we could have kept the satisfaction of blowing into the catridge when it wasn't working. DVD's are just rude, they get scratched and then fail miserably.

  • Christine20/02/2011 at 13:53

we should've gone with rewritable NES cartridges.

    A-wha...

  • Alex Andronov20/02/2011 at 13:55

Lets take the mega blockbuster film Knight and Day *ahem* I know but it's one I know is rentable on iTunes...

It's available from iTunes to rent for £3.49 or to buy from iTunes for £6.99

If you want to buy it from Woolworths Our Price Virgin Zizzi (whatever it was called HMV then you can get it for £7.99 or £6.99 from Amazon and then buy other things to get the free delivery.

So imagine you bought a film a month and only 2 films a year turned out to be ones that you wanted to actually own...

    Buying 6.99 x 12 = 83.88

    Renting 3.49 x 12 = 41.88

    Saving = £42

Which would mean you'd have enough money to buy... 6 movies or half of them and still break even. Or if you discover Knight and Day to be a bit disposable then you can just ignore it.

The amazing thing with the maths there is that essentially even if you rented the movie the second time you'd still be saving money.

  • Mr C20/02/2011 at 13:55

    A-wha...

    http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=28709

hard to copy, so the record companies would love them and no moving parts so no chance of scratching. the capacity would be expandable, so you could fit a high-def movie on there by now.

  • Mr C20/02/2011 at 13:56

Plus we could have kept the satisfaction of blowing into the catridge when it wasn't working. DVD's are just rude, they get scratched and then fail miserably.

I have a video rental 2 mins from my home (yes, they still or again exist), new movies for about £2.00, older ones for less give and take few pennies in exchange rate. and I can keep them for 3 nights in case I want to watch them in quick succession or go trough all the special features

There is a weird time stamp on iTunes rentals. You can keep them from 28 days from rental (is that right, something like that) but once you start the video you only have 48 hours to finish it.

  • F1Wolf20/02/2011 at 14:03

    that is annoying :(

I can rent movies in HD "online" from the cable tv though, sort of an alternative and I do not need Apple TV to watch them on big screen :-) the selection in the video rental shop is bigger though

I should also add that the Xbox has film rental too which is really good but you have to use the stupid microsoft points system, and the prices can too be a tad inflated at times.

  • Alianora La Canta20/02/2011 at 14:48

How can they make a team attend? Or more precisely what would be the penalty for non-attendance?

Loss of the entry. So not only would the team be thrown out of the 2011 championship, but any future entry would have to be via the same route as a new team would take - and their previous record would be taken into account.

  • Alianora La Canta20/02/2011 at 14:50

@jakehumphreyf1: For those asking. Just because the race goes ahead doesn't mean the BBC have to be there. We'll make a call, and I know what mine will be...

First race from the studio in London would be pretty novel.

  • Alianora La Canta20/02/2011 at 14:51

It did say a top team... Maybe they were reporting from Bizzaro world?

Mercedes? Unlike McLaren, it doesn't have any direct links to the region (that I know about), and the press are determined to make it sound like a top team if only to enhance their claims that Schumi is a title candidate...

The amazing thing with the maths there is that essentially even if you rented the movie the second time you'd still be saving money.

The annoying thing is that the library is usually the cheapest way to rent (my local one charges about £2 to rent a new movie and a bit less for slightly older ones) yet most people seem to ignore it...

  • Alianora La Canta20/02/2011 at 15:08

    Zavvi that was it...

I think they got renamed to Head. Daft name, but the DVDs were cheap...

they need help with their marketing. have never heard of that before.

They definitely do. Sadly a lot of the councils seem to hate computers in general, let alone the internet, with a passion. I remember the ruckus I caused when I suggested that maybe it would be better to solve a loss-making option to print out stuff by raising the price to cover the costs rather than to remove it altogether...

Even more of a cinema experience too with the people going up and down the stairs too and getting in your way

it's perfect. why haven't we done this before?

It's difficult to replicate the people eating popcorn and discussing spoilers right behind you because there's not enough width on the stairs for 2 people to sit next to each other...

Yeah. I don't know if it's my first time in one, but it was the most memorable. I am illiterate here. Boo teacher for not learning the language. It's a good experience to have, being so out of the language loop. It reminds me what it's like not to understand the basics. And the lady at the check (Czech?) out was none too happy to see me. She treated me with disdain. :( I didn't do anything wrong.

Rudeness! she doesn't deserve an awesome pun like you made there, boo to her.

It does remind me of when we were in Belgium though, being somewhere where you're conpletely illiterate with the language. Although saying that the first sign we saw in Belgium driving along the road was this brilliant sign which just took the mickey a bit. :)

    some more quotes:

"His precious Formula One is more important than the blood of his people which he spilled," Nimah said. "We put pressure on the Formula 1 contract, the crown prince got scared and now he wants to negotiate."

it's fair to say, f1 is becoming a mighty political pawn.

it's fair to say, f1 is becoming a mighty political pawn.

Time for Bernie to stand up and make a statement. He would probably suggest that they machine gun the protestors.

Surely the smart move is for the Bahraini royal family and Bernie to put out a joint statement saying this year's GP has been cancelled and will not take place

  • Steven Roy20/02/2011 at 23:24

I really don't see the point in all the stupid nonsense we have had to pretend the sport is green to stop protesters making a case against it only to have every civil liberty and freedom groups lining up against it.

I've got a post page open separately in FF so I can catch up with Daily comments later. A notification has appeared to tell me there's a new post. That didn't happen before. :)
