Ah, it must be my turn to write a daily post again. Let's see if I can remember how to do this. We've had so many excellent daily posts this week that I don't want to let anyone down. However, as the F1 news drought continues, I have found some things for us to talk about:

  • Stuart has written a rather amusing post about his experience at Silverstone, as they launched their new and revised circuit. He was supposed to be able to get a run out on track but sadly some engine troubles meant that couldn't happen. The best part is DC's take on the engine issues. No wonder he never made it to the top!
  • Lou has completed her A Level textiles work, and whilst I don't really know what that means academically, I know that it looks pretty cool. Fancy being able to do F1 stuff for your coursework! It's very creative, and a great advert for Red Bull. Although, let's not talk about subliminal advertising again, eh?
  • At the time of writing, Mr C is busy watching IRL - honestly, I can't get that man away from the racing. He reckons that the Race Control feature is fabulous and F1 could take note from it, but the live timing is really on par with what we have for F1. What is it about live timing that is so difficult to get right? I have yet to see a system for any form of racing that really ticks all the boxes.

That should do it for now. We're going into a bank holiday weekend here in the UK, so I am more keen than ever to hear what kind of exciting things you have planned. I will see you in the comments.

    Whats Valencia?

  • Alison30/04/2010 at 23:08

    Whats Valencia?

Have you blocked it out?? It just looks like Valencia with that green concrete wall.

i did wonder if you meant the circuit, i thought it was a green building? although i never pay any attention during that race so im likely to be wrong

The wall all the way round is concrete blocks. They're all painted green.

I remember them having no colour at all and complaining loudly about that

  • Steven Roy30/04/2010 at 23:12

Of course Lou has been to Valencia so maybe

  • Alison30/04/2010 at 23:14

I remember them having no colour at all and complaining loudly about that

Then last year they were painted. You then all complained that different bits weren't different colours so you could tell them apart :P

    Have you already resigned?

Verbally. Not in a written sense.

  • Steven Roy30/04/2010 at 23:35

I guess in that case you have a decision to make then. How would they treat you if you decided to stay after you told them you were leaving?

I guess in that case you have a decision to make then. How would they treat you if you decided to stay after you told them you were leaving?

I'm gonna leave. I was just shocked by how horrified Nick was by the step down I was taking.

  • Christine30/04/2010 at 23:40

I'm gonna leave. I was just shocked by how horrified Nick was by the step down I was taking.

Don't worry what people think. If it is the best move for you then that is all that matters. My attitude has always been as soon as I decide I am leaving a job nothing can convince me to stay.

  • Steven Roy30/04/2010 at 23:41

Since when has Nick been a measure of the sensible thing to do?

I was going to say that but I decided to be more diplomatic. Thanks for saying it for me

So don't worry about his thoughts on your job.

  • Alison30/04/2010 at 23:59

So don't worry about his thoughts on your job.

I care what he thinks about me though. For someone who was unemployed for so long, he doesn't half care a lot about what people do for a living....

I'm really looking forward to working in the day time and not the middle of the night.

  • Christine01/05/2010 at 00:00

i know how to do them, i'm just not smart enough

  • Steven Roy01/05/2010 at 00:03

It is true. Whatever job you have is not going to affect Nick unless you find a way to make a lot more money or move the two of you nearer each other.

    That just plainly isn't true!

agreed. i have no idea what christine does for a living. she pleases herself

It's unfair. On the TV 3 people in a team do a wall. We need a way to get a team to tackle walls on the net

  • Alison01/05/2010 at 00:08

I don't think it's wrong to care about other peoples' opinions. People don't live in bubbles. Even if you're the one doing it, the hours you work or how tired/grumpy it makes you obviously impacts other people.

  • startledbunny01/05/2010 at 00:08

It can have an impact but in the end if someone chooses to live thousands of miles away from you then you cannot make major decisions to suit them.

  • Jon Waldock01/05/2010 at 00:11

What if that kind of stuff wasn't particularly interesting and we'd rather communicate about more exciting stuff?

Yeah. I think it's a legal thing. Everyone wants an emergency contact. That wasn't my point though.

People always get backward logic like that. It's a pet peeve.

  • me01/05/2010 at 00:26

So Mr C's work have Christine's number but it doesn't mean Christine knows anything about them

umm, no. my work don't have christine's number.

    no-ones ever asked for one?

  • Christine01/05/2010 at 00:27

umm, no. my work don't have christine's number.

It doesn't really matter anyway. I don't have a huge desire to share who knows what about what in Sidepodcast Towers. I'm just curious why there are so many rules about these things, and why people care so much.

Oh and reading through the comments I didn't base my textile piece on Valencia, in truth the green is there to separate from the background. It's based on a photo Darren Heath took in Aus this year.... But only loosly. It's green cause I felt that was the best colour to include there. :)

Thank you for the daily mention and nice comments guys :)

They have since sold the naming rights but I think its working title was so much cooler because you look at it and go "ah, that must be a stadium that is a rectangle"

    and its covered in bubbles.

1.30 Eastern time, so it's either 6.30 or 7.30 here. I can never be sure

i think that might be 6.30, but i don't know if that is race coverage or the race itself

1.30 is 6.30. American races tend to start at the oddest times so probably best to follow from them.

To be honest it is a strange time to hold the race, 2pm Saturday.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 16:26

Hmmmm... I was meant to be going out this evening, but if it stays like this, the only going out I'll be doing is to Domino's Pizza

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 16:27

To be honest it is a strange time to hold the race, 2pm Saturday.

This race is on ABC as opposed to Versus and there is word that ABC swung the green flag time to fit the race around other programming

Last night after tiring boring stocktake I went for some beers, badly played pool and watched The Men Who Stare At Goats - very funny film, really enjoyed it. :)

Today was 'do not much' day involving eating a pasty and playing Wii.

What Lukeh forgot to tell you was that Lukeh had a dream where Jenson told him that he would quit F1 unless Lukeh watched the man who stares at goats immediately.

He was only watching it to save Jenson's career but he didn't want to worry you about it with all your textiles and everything so that's why he didn't say until now.

Just got a message back from a chap at the track - the race itself starts at 7, with build-up from 6.30

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:26

Wings are entirely different, is that type of rear wing needed cause its an oval?

This is actually a fairly high downforce package compared to what CART used to run. It is designed for speed and be more trimmed out when we get to Indy, particularly qualifying

  • Jackie01/05/2010 at 18:27

Thanks Pat, it's the first time I have watched Indy

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:27

Wings are entirely different, is that type of rear wing needed cause its an oval?

Also, this is a slightly different package as it is a 1.5 mile banked oval as opposed to a Super Speedway like Indy

  • lou01/05/2010 at 18:27

    oh dear :)

it is THE perfect image too, just what i was looking for. Thank you, even though you couldn't possibly have known i would need this image last year :)

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:27

They gave these cars more downforce at the rear to give them more stability at high speed and to create more wake for drafting.

The front wings are able to be set to a negative setting, I only learned that last year and I can't remember why you'd do it

  • me01/05/2010 at 18:28

Thanks Pat, it's the first time I have watched Indy

Will you watch the 500? Last year you were recording a show.. :)

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:29

Jackie, if you click a driver name you can watch onboard. You have to put up with another ad and you miss the overview of the race but it is pretty cool

  • me01/05/2010 at 18:29

Will you watch the 500? Last year you were recording a show.. :)

    ooooooh. in that case, yes.

  • rethymnoracer01/05/2010 at 18:29

Is it still allowed to have bigger right-hand-side tyres?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:30

Is it still allowed to have bigger right-hand-side tyres?

not quite, higher tyre pressures and slightly different suspension geometry i think

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:30

Will you watch the 500? Last year you were recording a show.. :)

    ooooooh. in that case, yes.

Indy looks very different in oval trim as opposed to F1 layout. How it is meant to look.

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:31

Sato 11th in his first oval race, very impressive

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:31

Indy looks very different in oval trim as opposed to F1 layout. How it is meant to look.

My jaw still drops when thinking of Meira's pass on Dixon at Indy 2008 - just incredible!!

  • Jackie01/05/2010 at 18:32

    Do they overtake?

  • rethymnoracer01/05/2010 at 18:32

not quite, higher tyre pressures and slightly different suspension geometry i think

Positive camber at the right- hand side and negative camber at the lefts, I think.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:33

    Do they overtake?

    lots

Positive camber at the right- hand side and negative camber at the lefts, I think.

    yep

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:33

    Do they overtake?

lots. it's not meant to be easy though

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:34

    Do they overtake?

They've had a bit of trouble with the rules on ovals when it comes to aero, suspension and suchlike. This time last year the oval races were dire, but they changed something and they are better now. So they should be passing. The trouble is the Ganassi team (Dixon and Franchitti) are the best in the business at this sort of track so when they are up front there isn't much passing.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:34

I'm agreeing with the radio people - no need for this yellow

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:35

    Viso...

  • Jackie01/05/2010 at 18:35

    200 laps, blimey

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 18:35

What's the yellow flag mean in Indy

    Full course caution. Safety Car

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:36

What's the yellow flag mean in Indy

Safety car on an oval - the speeds are far too high for locals or double-waved yellows

  • Jackie01/05/2010 at 18:37

    those pitstops are amazing

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 18:37

The racing has only really been a bit iffy since they moved the race to late-April/early May. It was always much better in July, although intensley hot

I found it difficult to follow who was where and who was being lapped.

It was okay but with the track being oval I found it difficult to follow who was where and who was being lapped. I'd watch it again though

The TV version is easier to follow, but those streams aren't great quality (plus this race was covered by ABC which is unbearable at times).

Just reading Olly G's thoughts on Silverstone now he's had a proper run on it

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83261

"It's done a couple of things that you'll have to be careful of, it's increased the brake wear and it's harder on rear tyres, because there are more longer, harder acceleration periods in lower gears. "

Maybe, since it was his supposed to be his 50th birthday earlier this year, all the coverage was used then instead of now.

  • Steven Roy01/05/2010 at 21:51

if anyone's around, i've updated the style of the homepage again. there's still plenty more work to do, but i think it's coming along nicely: http://sidepodcast.com/

Thingy at the bottom looks stylish.

Wondering if there is a chance of links for the lclt and doohickey on the front page, since they are currently hiding under the 'More' section/

I really like the new header/footer and the menu bar.

The post titles could be a touch big.

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 22:45

I found where Dave Pearce has been hiding. 6Music. He's got guest set on from some guy who's playing a remix of that track with "your name's not dahn you're not comin' in"

  • me01/05/2010 at 22:45

doohickey has a link, but it's not obvious. it's labeled "comment in real-time". or do you mean as one of the tabs>

Was wondering what you were all going on about the header, then refreshed. I sees now. Looks neat. Can see where the theme of the homepage is going to look like almost.

  • me01/05/2010 at 22:46

I really like the new header/footer and the menu bar.

The post titles could be a touch big.

agreed. this is sort of how things are in my mind:

    header and footer: 90% complete

    homepage info box: 99% complete

    everything else: 10% complete

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 22:47

That, or on the bottom under a different section like 'Sidepodcast Commenting' or something?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/05/2010 at 22:47

It's only about half of it....

  • me01/05/2010 at 22:48

that's exactly it. i've never developed a website publicly live like this, but the plan is to upload new changes every two or three days until all the styling is done.

have basically been doing for the past week or so, anyhow.

  • Pat W01/05/2010 at 22:48

agreed. this is sort of how things are in my mind:

Yeah I thought that may be the case. Layout first, text size tweaking later. :)

I like how doing it like this lets you can see over time how the website is progressing :)

  • me01/05/2010 at 22:49

Yeah I thought that may be the case. Layout first, text size tweaking later. :)

and then finally, sort out the realtime page, which is now lagging waaaay behind

Question on the big picturey thing with tab one (it is bound to have a name that I've forgotten), is it supposed to reset to 'Classic' option each time, or is it not sorted to go to like 'Latest'?

  • lou01/05/2010 at 22:54

yay! it's been on the list for far too long.

i love the font... the white on black for the tabs and the header... and the info box looks so perdy... eeeekk! it's awesome! really good job mr c (and mrs c of course...)

am calling it the infobox. it needs a sidepodname though.

we can control what it defaults too. one sec and i'll default it to the audio tab.

  • me01/05/2010 at 22:55

it's all good, we have backups etc. nothing can go wrong.

you're free to write as many posts as you like though, so by all means create as many as you need to build confidence.

i have nothing else to say.. daily posts are nice cause i don't have to say lots about one topic, and they are fun to research. So i'll stick to a weekly post for the time being ;)
