Here at Sidepodcast Towers, we are still reeling from the shock of seeing Barrichello back in the news. Seriously, I thought he'd gone underground and changed his name or something. Thankfully that was not the case, and he has finally broken cover to tell all.

  • The one thing I picked out of Rubens' interview was that he said, and I paraphrase: "I could have retired and badmouthed all my old teams but I'm ready to stay and fight." Except, all he's been doing is mouthing off about Ferrari, so what's the difference?
  • It's bad news all round for me, with Bourdais looking like he's going to head back to the US, and Franck's ALMS drive looking under threat. Who am I going to cheer on now?
  • Ferrari are once again admitting that their KERS development is behind schedule, and they're even dreaming up schemes for starting the season without it. Is this ultimate sandbagging or will it put them on the back foot for 2009?

There are other bits and bobs going on in the F1 world and no doubt in your worlds as well, so please share with us. We'd love to know what you're up to, and whether you've got anything exciting planned for the weekend. Otherwise, just stop by and say hi. I'll see you in the comments.

Apparently Rubens can not-retire and bad-mouth his old teams at the same time. So technically he is correct. There may be no difference to anyone else, but I think there's a lot of difference to him...

I have just watched the Second Senna film on dropio called The Right to Win. I am not sure who it is aimed at or if it is meant to have subtitles. The majority of it is in English or Portugese with bits in Italian and German. Maybe they are aiming at the very limited market of Senna fans who speak those for languages. I still enjoyed it even though chunks of it went over my head.

It's quite interesting watching Viviane Senna speaking Portugese. Because I can't understand the words I was watching her mannersisms and it is quite incredibe how like Ayrton she is. A lot of the same facial movements and even the way she moves her head is the same at times.

Good question. I believe they still have Accenture and Baugur (which, given their Icelandic nature, is actually an achievement). But who else is left with them?

It's always nice to get new commenters.

Sponsors always move around F1. Vodafone went from Ferrari to McLaren. Marlboro went from McLaren to Ferrari. TAG who own 15% of McLaren started out sponsoring Williams.

Williams have said that 90% of their budget for next season is already in place so they are not suffering too badly.

  • Steven Roy19/12/2008 at 01:13

Williams had Petrobras sponsorship but I don't know if they were a sponsor last season or not. I heard the rumours about them going to Honda and you have to wonder if they are true given that Fry and Brawn didn't seem to know the end was coming until the end. It could be they were close to doing a deal then Honda pulled the plug.

  • Dave in NZL (getting into the protection bracket...)19/12/2008 at 01:13

  • Rishi19/12/2008 at 01:14

Ah nice! If Honda came back, BP would make a brilliant sponsor I think. Especially seeing as Shell are so far dominating in terms of the Oil Companies, BP and Honda could both show off their green side, with Honda gaining the financial backing, whilst also establishing their green credentials.

  • Steven Roy19/12/2008 at 01:15

Petrobras is still shown on the Williams pics on their website so they were a sponsor last year. I haven't heard Williams mention another oil company recently so they may still be there.

    Morning all,

Williams have said that 90% of their budget for next season is already in place so they are not suffering too badly.

I am wondering what they mean by '90% of next years budget', because we are all assuming that means '90% of the 2008 budget' when in fact they could have forecast a reduction in sponsorship and therefore the money they have in place for next year could be in fact a lot less than the 2008 budget!

I wouldn't worry about Williams though. They started from nothing in a phonebox and have survived a lot of tough times in the last 35 years, so they'll know how to survive and keep the team running - unlike the dorks that ran the Honda team. :-(

got promoted. If I understood this article correctly, he and Rivola (from Toro Rosso) will take over some of Baldisseri's tasks.

Also: Ferrari and Toro Rosso are going to work closer together. Torro Rosso will serve as a training field for Ferrari engineers and that Italian guy Ferrari tested (Mirko Bortolotti) might become Toro Rosso's test driver. (according to Heikki Kulta)

I am assuming somrthing slightly different; 90% of what they anticipate bringing in for 2009.

Actually I was trying to say that too, just very badly :-)

What I am curious about is how much is the 2009 budget worth? Is it comparable to 2008 or is it a lot less? One shouldn't assume that because Williams are saying that they have 90% of their budget for the year that they are going to be ok...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/12/2008 at 11:58

    me said:

Is that a concept car or an actual production model?

i know not what the difference is? but you can buy one.

    There's a big difference.

A concept car can be anything from a Mock-up model (e.g. the Citroen GT) to a fully functioning car (e.g. the Jaguar F-Type). They are usually created to gauge public opinion on the style and development philosophies that the manufacturer will apply to future cars produced.

Sometimes the concept car evolves into a production model (that we can buy into a showroom) but the production model usually differs from the concept due to design changes, new regulations, etc. and typically looks different (usually a lot 'plainer') because of this.

Therefore what I really was asking before was:

"Is this car one that we can buy, or is it a concept car designed to make us all excited about a retro sports car from Mercedes, so that they can see whether one is worth building"?

  • me19/12/2008 at 12:02

Therefore what I really was asking before was:

“Is this car one that we can buy...?

yes, you can buy one. if you're very, very rich :)

not sure why it's the last one that mclaren will be involved in though?

  • me19/12/2008 at 12:03

    One shouldn’t assume that because Williams are saying that they have 90% of their budget for the year that they are going to be ok… {Gavin Brown - 5 comments ago}

Jordan fought back from a lot less (percentage-wise) in 2003 (I'm assuming Williams mean 90% of what they think they'll need for 2009). They even managed to score a few points. Still, it will probably be a tough year for Williams, unless their mechanical KERS system turns out to be a lot better than the electrical route their rivals have taken.

Chrysler may have confirmed their NASCAR involvement but they are a long way from confirming their own company's existence by the time the season starts. They are putting 30 of their plants on extended holidays and are looking for the US government to give them a humungous loan to keep them in business.

Sitting in the williams conference centre. Just met frank. Best thing about this place though = free wifi

Since when were you guys going to the Williams factory. Could have at least told us! :P Or perhaps it was a secret ;)

Anyway, after tonight I'm gonna be offline until either Monday or Tuesday because I'm going to be taking part in the frustrating and tiring ritual that's called moving house. We've got most of the stuff over there, just the big things like the sofas, dining table, etc. The phone line switches on either Monday or Tuesday so I'll chat with you guys tonight and then I'll be gone for a couple of days. :P

  • R.G (Whatever I say you'll disagree with it)19/12/2008 at 18:38

Well the didn't tell us once they were in fact in a completley differenct country, when we all thought they were lounging around at home drinking Martini's and Coke's on their weekend off.

  • Jackie19/12/2008 at 19:14

Have you guys seen the news about Coughlan et al on Autosport? http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72545

Don't forget to watch F1 review show this Sunday 21 December at 10.45am on ITV1.

They usually show it on new years day; but it's earlier this time round due to the changing of the guard (BBC take over in 09, ect...)

  • Steven Roy19/12/2008 at 19:51

The only thing I can't figure out about that car is how are you supposed to cope at 217mph without a windscreen.

I don't suppose anyone knows what the f1 season review DVDs are like? i've been given some money to spend on a Christmas present from my nan and i was wondering if they are generally any good or not.

They're not bad if you want a reminder of how the season went, but tend to miss some parts of the races and skips things that happen in between. Not getting any sense of the atmosphere at the time was pretty annoying for this years review, but I guess that's hard to include. They are getting better though.

I wonder if the BBC put Frankie Boyle on TV just to give their complaints department something to do.

Guys I must sign off, tomorrow is going to be a VERY, VERY long day with the move. I'm starting to wonder if we'll cope at all, what with all the internal renovation work done and the money being spent on that. I won't say how much, but I will say it's more than just a coat of paint. A LOT more. That and both myself and Mum are quite close to breaking point due to the stress of it all.

But I guess we'll manage. Somehow. Anyway, goodbye for now, hopefully I'll be back online Tuesday at the latest if not earlier. Adios amigos! :)

  • lou19/12/2008 at 23:31

    Merry Christmas Jackie!

Good luck with the move Scott :)

  • Steven Roy19/12/2008 at 23:31

He is incredibly funny but when you see some of the things that generate complaints you have to wonder why you never hear of complaints about him.

On things like mock the week he actually produces alot more material than is shown, but the editors have to cut it out because they'd get taken off the air lol
