There have been some interesting snippets in the Formula 1 world today, things that don't necessarily make an entire news item but get the mind thinking. There have also been some good things in the comments, especially this first item:

  • Dan's mate sold a toy car to Anthony Davidson's dad, which quite obviously leads on to a debate over whether Davidson or Sato was a better driver and which is more deserving of a race seat. Weigh in with your thoughts.
  • Kubica thinks that KERS is slowing him down, that the car will go quicker without out. However, he wants the car to have it as it's been designed that way. So, how will cars with and without KERS stack up against each other?
  • Sponsors are jumping around all over the place, with Lenovo moving to McLaren, but speculation that Vodafone might pull out, having done so in other sporting factions. What effect would that have on the team, and I also like the question - where would Hamilton go?

There have been plenty of other topics circulating the comments, though, and I expect the same to take place today. Don't be constrained by anything I've listed above, and say what you feel. See you in the comments.

    If you don’t mind me asking, you appear to be in the UK but have a (very) Italian name {Bassano Clapper - 9 comments ago}

    The "La Canta" bit came straight out of a Spanish dictionary. My 11-year-old self thought this meant "to sing", but discovered a few weeks later when she started doing classes at secondary school that you can't just have the stem of a verb in Spanish without sticking something on the end of it. Babelfish translates it into "sings", apparently unaware of the grammatical error.

    "Alianora" came out of a fantasy novel called "Dragonsbane" by Patricia C. Wrede, and is the name of one of the princesses in there. The roots of it are Old German. If you split the name, "Alia" means "all" and "Nora" means either "honour" or "light".

    I can see why you thought it might have been borrowed from Italian because the two languages are closely related. However, it isn't, partly because I didn't have access to any dictionaries at age 11 other than English, French and Spanish.

    And I'm from Derbyshire. Which according to my atlas is in the middle of England.

  • Steven Roy18/12/2008 at 01:51

    A most comprehensive and satisfactory answer

    See, why can't the rest of the world deal with concise Q's like that?

  • me18/12/2008 at 01:52

    There are issues with your quoting too, though not apparently same as mine eariler {Bassano Clapper - previous comment}

    I think I can take the blame on my quoting method. It's a holdover from when I started on forums five years ago. The first one I went to had such a clunky quoting system that I found it a lot easier to make my own quoting convention. I carried it over to the other fora and blogs I am involved in irrespective of what quoting facilities they may or may not have. It just seems a bit odd on Sidepodcast to some people because there's a two-click method of quoting somebody, whereas my method takes about... ...38.

    Pics on me blog.

    Next month will be even better with Williams & Renault presenting their new cars on the same day.

    By the way, 2009 (McLaren) wings look great in real life, no complaints from me. The car looks fine without all those 2008 attachments.

  • lou18/12/2008 at 18:39

    Thanks, I’ve got ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ stuck in my head.

    Again

    hehe always happy to help ;)

    who's gonna buy out honda then?

  • Steven Roy18/12/2008 at 18:44

    I have just written a comment to grandprix.com complaining about the adult nature of their adverts which to my mind are not suitable for a motor sport site.

  • Steven Roy18/12/2008 at 18:46

    who’s gonna buy out honda then?

    The annoying thing is Honda's finances are not that bad. I assume AGR will source a car form another manufacturer if Honda pull Acura out. I don't know if their sonsorship is in any way tied to the brand of the car they run.

    Thanks, that was very interesting. Rubens clearly wants us all to know he has the fire in the belly to keep going.

    You know, a team could do a lot worse than sign a steady experienced driver like Barrichello for '09. If nobody does, there is a strong rumour that he will be joining Gil de Ferran's Acura ALMS team for Sebring next year (if there still is an Acura team next year ;-) )...

    Clearly we haven't seen the last of Rubens yet :-)

    whaddyamean two click? {me - 73 comments ago}

    One click to find the thing you want to quote and one to get it to appear in the box (at least if you're like me and use the click-and-drag method to scrolling).

    Yup, I finally remembered what I was thinking when I wrote "two-click" for Sidepodcast's standard quoting method last night...

    You know, STR might just call his bluff and drop him. {Steven Roy - 44 comments ago}

    Unfortunately so, but that's the risk you take when deciding which of two (or more) teams to mount into the sunset... ...you face the possibility of them both galloping for the sunset when you're still standing there making your mind up. It's even worse if you happen to be loosely holding the reins of both horses at the time.

  • Steven Roy18/12/2008 at 22:48

    They have to give that track a race. All the new tracks we have had recently are flat as a pancake and then someone builds a track like that for testing only. It looks narrow but that may be because it was a building site at the time.

    Heads-up: ITV’s F1 season review is on this Sunday (21/12) at 10.45 - 11.45. {Dank - 33 comments ago}

    Quite right too. I was wondering why Adblocker Plus suddenly started blocking four items on their home page. For some reason I don't think I'll be bothering to unblock them... (Incidentally, I use Firefox and the only advert I see is the one for GrandPrix+).

    I'm not sure whether I should hope that this is merely due to someone highjacking the site and injecting the ads as proof-of-concept (that method of virus-spreading is still new enough for the virus writers to not always put an actual virus in as the payload) rather than a deliberate, if dumb, decision or not.

    I've just watched the coverage of the race of champions, and i noticed the little shot of DC's baby :) aww

  • Alianora La Canta18/12/2008 at 23:40

    Does anyone else think that little Dayton is going to be a racing driver when he grows up, given how early he's being inducted into that world? :)

    So if his son is called Dayton, if they have a daughter will she be called Daytona?

    generally kidlets of racing drivers always pick it up in some form, although he's retired, so unless he starts something else up, ickle DC may not...

    Screen-shot! :D Hehe.

    Does anyone else think that little Dayton is going to be a racing driver when he grows up, given how early he’s being inducted into that world?

    Actually, I think so. How about this for a 2031 headline:

    Mick Schumacher vs. Dayton Coulthard for the world championship! 30 years after their fathers fought it tooth and nail, they're at it again!

    So if his son is called Dayton, if they have a daughter will she be called Daytona?

    That was SOOOO corny. Haha!

    Mick Schumacher vs. Dayton Coulthard for the world championship! 30 years after their fathers fought it tooth and nail, they’re at it again!

    i wonder what the odds are!?!

  • Alianora La Canta19/12/2008 at 00:07

    To be honest, I'd put it at 20 years' time due to the way drivers seem to be getting younger these days. (I'm still getting used to the idea that I may well be supporting the oldest driver on the grid for the first time in a decade).

  • Journeyer19/12/2008 at 00:15

    i wonder what the odds are!?!

    They offer odds for that this early?! Hahaha!

    But yeah, that looks like a very good prospect. Doesn't Hakkinen have a son too... erm, name being Hugo? For all we know, he could end up racing too!

  • Alianora La Canta19/12/2008 at 00:21

    Hugo would be seven or eight now (can't quite remember when his birthday is), so perhaps he'd be in F1 in 2020...

  • Journeyer19/12/2008 at 00:44

    Hugo would be seven or eight now (can’t quite remember when his birthday is), so perhaps he’d be in F1 in 2020…

    Hmmm... I see. He was born at the end of the 2000 season, right? So he'd probably be 8 by now. :)

    But then again, Mick was born around the same time as Hugo, right? I think it's more likely we see Schumi-Hakkinen II rather than Schumi-DC II.

  • Alianora La Canta19/12/2008 at 00:58

    Maybe, given Schumacher Sr's longevity in F1, it will begin Schumi-Hakkinen II and finish Schumi-DC II...

  • lou19/12/2008 at 01:04

    actually while we are on the subject of DC i noticed a while ago that he had updated his blog, in his newest entry he talks about Dayton a little, and his new job at the BBC, not entirely insightful, but a good read no the less :)
