There have been some interesting snippets in the Formula 1 world today, things that don't necessarily make an entire news item but get the mind thinking. There have also been some good things in the comments, especially this first item:
- Dan's mate sold a toy car to Anthony Davidson's dad, which quite obviously leads on to a debate over whether Davidson or Sato was a better driver and which is more deserving of a race seat. Weigh in with your thoughts.
- Kubica thinks that KERS is slowing him down, that the car will go quicker without out. However, he wants the car to have it as it's been designed that way. So, how will cars with and without KERS stack up against each other?
- Sponsors are jumping around all over the place, with Lenovo moving to McLaren, but speculation that Vodafone might pull out, having done so in other sporting factions. What effect would that have on the team, and I also like the question - where would Hamilton go?
There have been plenty of other topics circulating the comments, though, and I expect the same to take place today. Don't be constrained by anything I've listed above, and say what you feel. See you in the comments.
Just to say I appreciate the fact that you've put this up, even if most of the conversation appears to still be on the previous day's thread.
awwwww.
okay, time to move ;)
Move where?

someone just sent me a link to this video

At this point, am SOOO glad I had the foresight to book a half day when on earlies tomorrow
Being in charge of aircraft maintenance at 06:00 is not congruent with Mr Arthur Guinness’ product consumption
Ah ha, thought you could hide from me did you?
I think there should be a flag some where if we're not going to keep to an accepted Earth day

Darned quote shading is not playing ball tonight
:( what is it with my comments going into moderation today, all i did was link to a fiat advert...
youtube is always a problem. that and wikipedia and f1f. not a huge amount i can do about it sadly. i just work 'ere.

If you don't mind me asking, you appear to be in the UK but have a (very) Italian name
I have a good friend from the South and am a big Italophile so please excuse the curiosity
Will not be offended by a 'Va fan c*lo' or similar :D
Always good to *(actually) ask the Q
Where are your roots from?
are you writing in code?
Are you surprised (is the red fox flying at night?)
Did we not establish this yesterday? :)
I thought it was Spanish
Am assuming simple abbreviations are acceptable though, given my spelling - all bets are off
I thought about it and decided Italian, I may be wrong and (given tonights comms errors prob am so)
Maybe am abbreviating far too much, though given words like that - is it any wonder?
Spelling a big issue
tis okay, it'll all make sense to me in the morning :)
No, it just hurts and Ibuprofen isn't the magic cure-all :(
Me, if it doesn't blow your cover? Are you in the entertainment biz/production?
Am full of Q's tonight i am
Am not offended by nos and shut ups
In some ways anonymity is absolutely fine online and can understand it
(though we all know you are the stig really)
racing driver it is then ;)

If you don’t mind me asking, you appear to be in the UK but have a (very) Italian name {Bassano Clapper - 9 comments ago}
The "La Canta" bit came straight out of a Spanish dictionary. My 11-year-old self thought this meant "to sing", but discovered a few weeks later when she started doing classes at secondary school that you can't just have the stem of a verb in Spanish without sticking something on the end of it. Babelfish translates it into "sings", apparently unaware of the grammatical error.
"Alianora" came out of a fantasy novel called "Dragonsbane" by Patricia C. Wrede, and is the name of one of the princesses in there. The roots of it are Old German. If you split the name, "Alia" means "all" and "Nora" means either "honour" or "light".
I can see why you thought it might have been borrowed from Italian because the two languages are closely related. However, it isn't, partly because I didn't have access to any dictionaries at age 11 other than English, French and Spanish.
And I'm from Derbyshire. Which according to my atlas is in the middle of England.
But not according to ITV
:D
A most comprehensive and satisfactory answer
See, why can't the rest of the world deal with concise Q's like that?
this needs wiki'ing.
That's a good point. Why else would I have spent a good part of the first three races trying to convince their streaming provider that I had a UK address? Maybe the psuedonym threw them...
Yeah, what do they know? Apart from next year's reality TV thingy final winner!
Refer to Me's Facebook convo "the name 'me' does not exist" :D

Duly wikiied.
fanx you.
I think it's quite the renaissance pseudonym, so big props (south London stylee :D)
I guess one day I should explain the origins of the source of one's moniker
maybe now?
Don't be silly, I'm drunk not stupid
Yeah, what do they know? Apart from next year’s reality TV thingy final winner! {Bassano Clapper - 3 comments ago}
Thankfully the BBC already knows I'm a resident of the UK.

You'll need a licence fee paying acrd for that soon

Shouldn't do - my parents sort that kind of stuff out.
Though to be fair, there isn't much renaissance props coming outa the hood these days so take while you can get it girl (can't do [or write] a Brooklyn accent)
:)

Any particular reason?
Err, BBC are paying + Honda need cash = Middle peeps are the licence fee payers
(oh noes, Maths) :)
There are issues with your quoting too, though not apparently same as mine eariler
Therefore is ALL Mr Gates' fault as usual I guess
Quid Pro Quo [for the morning's consideration and the hope that it'll be Wiiki'd thereafter]
There are issues with your quoting too, though not apparently same as mine eariler {Bassano Clapper - previous comment}
I think I can take the blame on my quoting method. It's a holdover from when I started on forums five years ago. The first one I went to had such a clunky quoting system that I found it a lot easier to make my own quoting convention. I carried it over to the other fora and blogs I am involved in irrespective of what quoting facilities they may or may not have. It just seems a bit odd on Sidepodcast to some people because there's a two-click method of quoting somebody, whereas my method takes about... ...38.
I think most of it get it
The rest, there's no hope for :D
Of us
Damn grammar tonight
whaddyamean two click?
:D
i have to sleep, people. it's far too late.
Oh well... ...I probably should go to bed, since it's 2:26am...
must be christmas :)
is for wimps but oh well (night folks)
where's Journeyer? :D
Oh, I just want to say this before going to bed - I finally found the friend function in the wiki. Apologies if Jordan and the Sidepodcast team have been waiting a while for their requests to be answered; I didn't know they'd been made until I stumbled upon my profile one minute ago.
must be christmas {me - 4 comments ago}
It's not Christmas - but I do have the last Text Processing class of term later today.
Tut tut, Senorina La Canta :D
Señorita, is it? Well, I didn't even know there was a friend function until tonight, so I had no idea it was even possible to ask.
scusa: signorina
I once knew a dusky Spanish Maiden (in my youth) whose name translated as
'Betty Bad Windmill'
(think trans was in Italiano [though was always funny]
*sigh*
Something like Bettina MalMolino [iz sure that's wrong]
which is latin though geographically, is asking too much at this hour)
Morning all,
Here's a funny quote to start the day, an audience answer to a question from BBC Radio 4's "The Now Show" from 5 Dec:
Question: When was the last time you were disappointed?
"When I started my first day on the job at Mclaren"
And why was that?
"Because I found out we made pushchairs, not F1 cars!"
:-D :-D :-D

Mmm, pick n mix.
Jenson's career defined in a sentence :-)
that cartoon's lacking in realism. it features an opinion from rubens.

Bourdais considers IndyCar move
Boo.
That sucks, although you can't blame him for sorting out a back up, just.in.case.
scusa: signorina {Bassano Clapper - 12 comments ago}
If my name originated from Italian, you would be correct. However, the surname originates from Spanish, so señorita is correct if the name origin method is used for deciding titles.

That's code for "STR, stop messing about and sign me up - you know it's the right thing to do!"
Looks like I won't be seeing any Corvettes when I go to Le Mans next year :-(
hmm...
lol :(
Anyone fancy one of the Shuttles?
NASA are going to give them away - you just need to pay for 'safing' of the systems and transport.
$42 million each...
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/18/nasa_shuttle_giveaway_plan/
We need to hijack one of these stupid groups that are trying to raise money to buy Honda and re-direct them
Great stuff. That front wing doesn't look half as bad as I thought it would on TV.
So that's testing done then for '08. What's the testing schedule for '09?
With most cars rolling out their new cars around 20th Jan or so we'll see the car launches and a new US president all in the space of a day or two. Happy times... :)
Blimey, didnt see that coming :(
Astons's all the way then!!
You know, STR might just call his bluff and drop him.
Lets hope not :(
Sounds like Ferrari are having huge problems getting KERS working.
Running very late and over budget. Oh dear. :D
Aloha! Got back from Algarve, fantastic venue, absolutely mind-blowing, you can follow the car 90% of the lap from the main grandstand, I opted not to go to the paddock because of this advantage, they not allow you to the pitlane, only on top of the garages.
Pics on me blog.
Next month will be even better with Williams & Renault presenting their new cars on the same day.
By the way, 2009 (McLaren) wings look great in real life, no complaints from me. The car looks fine without all those 2008 attachments.
HE SPEAKS!

Oh my, actual goodness!!
SATO'S BETTER.
There, I said it.
As I said yesterday, who's the first engineer to remove the last 'A'
Won't miss him.
Rubens Ba.aari..cheelo?
I don't think he comes out of it particularly well. He maons about how he didn't get equal treatment at Ferrari but now he is losing weight for next year. Shame he didn't do that when he couldn't beat Schumacher.
I see someone has added another two and a half hours worth of video today. I look forward to seeing it and if anyone could organise a few extra hours in my day I would be grateful.
:D
Heads-up: ITV's F1 season review is on this Sunday (21/12) at 10.45 - 11.45. They've even entitled it 'Lewis Hamilton - World Champion,' just in case you didn't already know that.
An hour dedicated to ITV's biased. Joyful.
But hey, it's the last time we'll see Steve 'and we make no apologies' Ryder fronting any F1 coverage. Ever. Happy days!
same here !!
very happy days. i don't think i can stomach it though.
yay! Rubens! nice to know he is still alive etc :)
oh god... Looking on the bright side, I'll hopefully get to see a glimpse of Jenson in the background of a Lewis interview or something :P
Can we live comment it? It wont be the same complaining about it on my own. ;)
Thanks, I've got 'Always look on the bright side of life' stuck in my head.
Again

Don't tell Christine but Franck's ALMS drive could be in trouble
hehe always happy to help ;)
am sure we'll be around :)
yay :)
who's gonna buy out honda then?
I have just written a comment to grandprix.com complaining about the adult nature of their adverts which to my mind are not suitable for a motor sport site.
The annoying thing is Honda's finances are not that bad. I assume AGR will source a car form another manufacturer if Honda pull Acura out. I don't know if their sonsorship is in any way tied to the brand of the car they run.
all i've got is t-mobile?
and clive.
Every page I went to I got adverts for pills to extend ..........
ahh, that is unfortunate.
Thanks, that was very interesting. Rubens clearly wants us all to know he has the fire in the belly to keep going.
You know, a team could do a lot worse than sign a steady experienced driver like Barrichello for '09. If nobody does, there is a strong rumour that he will be joining Gil de Ferran's Acura ALMS team for Sebring next year (if there still is an Acura team next year ;-) )...
Clearly we haven't seen the last of Rubens yet :-)
I use Adblocker on Firefox - I don't see any ads at all :)
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/picture_free.php/dir/2008dectest2/image/l__o9t0352-2
i love pictures like this :)
Is that McLaren's front wheel off the ground?
wow. i want to be there. it looks much nicer than where i am atm :)
im in essex....its just started raining....and in 1 hour they turn off the street lighting "to save electricity"....i think i'd rather be there too :P
i really want to go on LAT and buy one of those pictures for like A2 size one day. or onto canvas or something :)
I've seen an onboard lap of the track, some of the elevation changes is stunning
umm....its a ferrari....lol
and i think one of hte front wheel is off teh group
Well it's not exactly easy to make out when the car's pretty much in the shadows! :P
That pic would look great as a backdrop on a podcast
Bit dangerous if you had to go to work in an hours time.
hint hint ;)
exactly, plus (not surprisingly) the crime rate has gone up! stupid people.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=A-6T5f4O16c
theres an onboard video of the Algarve circuit for anyone who wants one, its just a rough one, but still looks amazing!
We accept all donations gladly. :)
Will a hefty donation get the megamix done quicker ;) ?
You can't rush works of art. They're done when they're done.
whaddyamean two click? {me - 73 comments ago}
One click to find the thing you want to quote and one to get it to appear in the box (at least if you're like me and use the click-and-drag method to scrolling).
Yup, I finally remembered what I was thinking when I wrote "two-click" for Sidepodcast's standard quoting method last night...
You know, STR might just call his bluff and drop him. {Steven Roy - 44 comments ago}
Unfortunately so, but that's the risk you take when deciding which of two (or more) teams to mount into the sunset... ...you face the possibility of them both galloping for the sunset when you're still standing there making your mind up. It's even worse if you happen to be loosely holding the reins of both horses at the time.
They have to give that track a race. All the new tracks we have had recently are flat as a pancake and then someone builds a track like that for testing only. It looks narrow but that may be because it was a building site at the time.
Heads-up: ITV’s F1 season review is on this Sunday (21/12) at 10.45 - 11.45. {Dank - 33 comments ago}
Thanks for that. Mum will stop complaining that she can't find it in the Radio Times now.
It wasn't me wot said that. It was Journeyer
I have just written a comment to grandprix.com complaining about the adult nature of their adverts which to my mind are not suitable for a motor sport site. {Steven Roy - 22 comments ago}
Quite right too. I was wondering why Adblocker Plus suddenly started blocking four items on their home page. For some reason I don't think I'll be bothering to unblock them... (Incidentally, I use Firefox and the only advert I see is the one for GrandPrix+).
I'm not sure whether I should hope that this is merely due to someone highjacking the site and injecting the ads as proof-of-concept (that method of virus-spreading is still new enough for the virus writers to not always put an actual virus in as the payload) rather than a deliberate, if dumb, decision or not.
It wasn’t me wot said that. It was Journeyer {Steven Roy - 2 comments ago}
Sorry Journeyer!
I've just watched the coverage of the race of champions, and i noticed the little shot of DC's baby :) aww
Does anyone else think that little Dayton is going to be a racing driver when he grows up, given how early he's being inducted into that world? :)
So if his son is called Dayton, if they have a daughter will she be called Daytona?
generally kidlets of racing drivers always pick it up in some form, although he's retired, so unless he starts something else up, ickle DC may not...
Screen-shot! :D Hehe.
Actually, I think so. How about this for a 2031 headline:
Mick Schumacher vs. Dayton Coulthard for the world championship! 30 years after their fathers fought it tooth and nail, they're at it again!
That was SOOOO corny. Haha!
i think it's highly probable ;)
i wonder what the odds are!?!
To be honest, I'd put it at 20 years' time due to the way drivers seem to be getting younger these days. (I'm still getting used to the idea that I may well be supporting the oldest driver on the grid for the first time in a decade).
They offer odds for that this early?! Hahaha!
But yeah, that looks like a very good prospect. Doesn't Hakkinen have a son too... erm, name being Hugo? For all we know, he could end up racing too!
Hugo would be seven or eight now (can't quite remember when his birthday is), so perhaps he'd be in F1 in 2020...
Hmmm... I see. He was born at the end of the 2000 season, right? So he'd probably be 8 by now. :)
But then again, Mick was born around the same time as Hugo, right? I think it's more likely we see Schumi-Hakkinen II rather than Schumi-DC II.
Maybe, given Schumacher Sr's longevity in F1, it will begin Schumi-Hakkinen II and finish Schumi-DC II...
actually while we are on the subject of DC i noticed a while ago that he had updated his blog, in his newest entry he talks about Dayton a little, and his new job at the BBC, not entirely insightful, but a good read no the less :)
