Yesterday went by without a single breakout thread, which means it must have been relatively quiet in the world of Formula 1. Suddenly, it is Friday, and the end of the week already, which is always a good thing. Here's what we've been talking about:
- Kubica spoke out yesterday, saying he was basically waiting for the Renault hearing before deciding which team his future lies with. This, I think, is the best silly season trail we have so far: Kubica to Williams instead, taking Rosberg's place, who is heading on to Brawn. Are there other trails longer that I have missed?
- If you're looking for a change of pace, I released our first Media Future Change podcast yesterday. It's only short, and if you're interested in anything to do with the media, or the future, or... change, then you might want to check it out.
- Back to F1, though, Ari Vatanen announced his cabinet for his presidential campaign, and for once he wasn't drowned under Renault news. It still didn't emerge with much fanfare though, and I'm starting to worry the member clubs will have forgotten who he is!
That'll do it for today. Let us know what you've got planned for the weekend - aside from listening to 12 hours of Sidepodradio, of course. I'll see you in the comments.
Is this an automatic Daily Thread generator?
Hello Friday :D :D
Does SidePodRadio have an emergency kill switch where suddenly the cricket cowbell song is broadcast in case of nuclear holocaust or something?
It just trumpets its arival with an ode to glee
Auto-ping so we don't forget to switch :-)
Mr C is a clever chap
I noticed that he wasn't doing as many late nights these days
No need now
He's doing a late night tonight, but had to turn doohickey off..
Mr C is a magician!
He's getting terribly productive lately
I sense a refreshed website round the corner
...and he wears a magic hat!
sidepodcastping is an auto alert for a new thread but Christine keeps beating it
Right, I've warmed up the new daily...
Has it been mentioned today that there may be a discussion soon on engine equalisation again?
Everyone hates Mercedes. It's not their fault.
I saw that story earlier but I haven't seen any discussion here
I don't
At least they're not Toyota :)
Are they going to keep doing this until every engine has the same power & torque curves?
I haven't heard of anyone making any changes this year. Clearly Renault's free pas to upgrade their engine last season was botched. How can you get a free upgrade and not end up with the best engine
Maybe they wanted the most stylish engine, in a French way. Who knows, it does seem silly
Why were they allowed? (I understand this is a major argument sparker, I just want a brief summary of the situation....)
Their engine was rubbish. They said they were following the spirit of the rules while others - Ferrari - stuck to the letter of the rules
They laid off half their engine department in the spirit of the new rules which said no more upgrades. Everyone else kept plugging away at tiny changes and got better so Renault got left behind. Flavio complained.
There's a man on the tv biting into a head of garlic as if it was an apple..... I find this very distressing!
i.e. They got caught out by the rules
Like the whingers with the double diffusers issues earlier this year
[Not smart enouugh to interpret in the best way, which any good engineer should do]
To be honest, didn't one team (Red Bull?) come up with it, go to the FIA for some clarity and get told it was against the rules?
and look what happened there. The FIA do not want anyone to have an advantage
That was their mistake, what do the FIA know compared to [some] of the smart folk at the factories?
Don't remember
Sorry you are talking double diffusers not engines. Yes they did
They're the law makers....
Yup. Very odd, considering they have Newey on board.
Morning, everyone. TGIF!
They enforce it
The overtaking working group came up with it and Ross Brawn said last year that their was a gaping loophole but they wouldn't listen
Bet he was laughing his socks off by April
Hey Journeyer
Do you have a meeting in Brussels next August?
Can you arrange one?
I think their concept was more drastic from what i had heard
Hmmm... We have an office in Brussels, but I don't work with anyone there. Will see what I can do...
Okay definitely more fool them then to abandon the whole idea rather than just going back a step.
Sprout research is another good reason...
hey
They went with the pull-rod thing which has worked for them quite well I think
If they had KERS, they'd be something else
Brawn's engine solution came too late for that
A friend had a weekend in Brussels and he asked several people about their sprouts and they had no idea what he was talking about :)
Unless you're talking about my curtain pole, you lost me around here....
Oo! Question for radio show
I'm not sure Alison's DIY tips is what you're after. I don't have an Orange Drill afterall :(
Push-rod vs pull rod suspension
BBC did a thing on it earlier in the year
Allows Newey's design to be much more tightly packaged at the rear which is probably contributing to the Renault engine failures in the Red Bull.
[Less cooling most likely]
Adrian Newey based his supension on your curtains?
That would have been last year's, with the fragile RB's ;)
hi all. Just wanted to point out that as well as not camping i dont do general admission.
Are you coming on the show as the tech expert to explain it?
http://events.imeche.org/EventView.aspx?EventID=664
"What Has Formula One Ever Done for us?" booked
ok cool i will do the same... do you have to be a member?
I'll have to research it first, this is in no way a "maybe" or anything similar ;)
No
Remeber to put your employer or organisation as Sidepodcast
For sure?
Job title?
Thanks for volunteering.
:D
He volunteered. Put it on the wiki page and then it is the law
Classy girl...
Researcher?
Commentor
I cant put that!
Grandstands only, eh?
Would researcher be ok?
My wallet doesn't do 3 x grandstand days :-)
Or technical advisor, entertainment facilitator. You get the gist
Really?
When we went to the KERS thing, they asked on the e-form "How did you hear about this lecture"
Mr C wrote, Jon told me
Tell me about it
ahahahahaha
awesome recall! ...again!
♥
(not here)
3 grandstand days is cheaper than 1 ;) i am coming from half way around the world to a race i have always dreamed of so for me i want to do it right. Ga isnt right for me, i hate being stuck in one spot all day and having to get there before dawn.
[bows]
The girl has a good point
It's not like we'll be able to talk to each other during the race :)
Doesnt grandstand mean you are stuck? But i get what you mean if we had to stake out a prime spot
If you keep this up you will have a travelling buddy.
*so jealous*
LOL at "Fernando Tefalonso"
via Twitter
I am a registered delegate
for the record, we're doing grandstand because video cameras don't like rain. and spa is wet.
the sitting down bit only lasts two hours. we can split and meetup throughout the day.
I'll send the link to Giggles
*is not here* maybe general admission for the friday then? so we can have a look around and see some of the different areas of the track and get to know our surroundings... then again i've never been to a GP so i'm not sure what to expect..
Awesome.. so we will need covered?
I hadn't clocked that it was cheaper. I don't like being in the same place all weekend though..
i need a quick show of hands... who here is not a grandprix+ subscriber?
From the gist i got the other day.. does a grand stand seat also give you access to all GA areas?
christine will, she gets ill at the thought of rain.
so christine said it was okay for you guys to come then! :D
*sheepishly raises hand*
yes , yes I know know *digging out credit card*
Even with a brolly?
Gold Pole, Source or Eau-Rouge for the weekend is £382
[There are some questions on the validity and prices of this site which I will look into]
*raises hand even though she isn't here* - i has very little money to subscribe to things :(
i mean stuck in that you cant go get food or go to the bathroom or browse around between support races. Plus my lifelong problem of being 5'1" doesnt help in crowds.
are ya doing it now? good man :)
Me
It must do!
Me.
can we convince you to sign up? joe is flippin' ace and everyone should be a subscriber.
i love f1.. but i don't really want to watch a race.. with my camera, in the soaking rain... i'll be ill too :(
http://www.spagrandprix.com/ sez 385 EUR at promo rate, 480(!) at normal.
same question?
hmmm. not good lou. we might have to get you to do a challenge in return for a subscription ;)
can you find me an extra 2 hours in the day? plus a little bit of loose change? i really want to subscribe.. but i just wouldn't get the time atm to read it :(
*lowers hand*
I'm in now
To be honest, not really at the moment
There are plenty of free alternatives. Not that it isn't something I won't consider in the future. I just don't have the time to regularly read it, I know what I'm like
a challenge? what type of challenge?
Aha, if that's the case, sign me up for a weekend grandstand then :-)
I vote we split up on Friday for exploration purposes. I will be wandering the track. On Saturday and Sunday I would make full use of the grandstand.
Good morning everyone.
YES! paul you are my hero of the night/day. thanking you.
I read the last one in a single sitting... it was the best one so far in my opinion...
because of the buy before october 31 discount those prices are up to $300 cheaper than i could get for 2009. As for covered id put my hand up for gold 4 at eau rouge.
understood... but... i really think you should try it. and it's only a couple of beers.
having said that - I just paypaled, but I have no idea what happens next, and how I get on....!
you just need a confirmation from joe. good man.
I'll be trying to stop Mr C from earning an ASBO for hassling Ted
I can see my abu dhabi tickets floating out the window... *sob*
Maybe 5 live will let me have a mat in the corner of their studio in return for a local guide...
i kinda drained my F1 money for the month since i bought that new F1 book... will have to get back to you on that one. ;)
Ah, OK, so I await his email then. No worries
booo :(
as long as i don't get left on my own i'm happy to do anything... i'd either be overcome with excitement and go and get myself lost... or i'd have a map and get lost anyway...
It is pretty late in the season...
It's a bit like Alex's book. I have been meaning to get GP+ for ages. I just need enough guilt-prompting to do it.
hehe. we need alex to plug gp+ then.
I have a feeling not everyone will want to do the grandstand
Two parties that will meet up before and after the sessions I reckon
don't know. we'll have a think.
Good point
Come March, I may be up for it
I now have both. Friday has been good to me :D
now being a subscriber to both...
It is defiantly better than autosport's attempt to copy it.
it's a good book, i promise. :) will probably write a guest post on it during a non-F1 week.
Possibly. I also think there could be a split between covered/uncovered. I'm looking at pics and the uncovered has a far better view, IMO.
it doesn't matter. you're buying nearly 50 magazines for the price. everytime you need to win an argument on SPC, look at the history you can delve into.
The archives are great though... they will kepp me going though the winter... I read the first one then decided to save them...
i would be able to do a grandstand i think... (dad will be paying so it's up to him :D )
makes sense :)
i'm worried now...
if i lent you our copy (shhh, don't tell anyone) of this weeks. would that temp ya?
That's why I was always going to get GP+. I have a pile of old Autosports and would much rather some PDFs
That's why they invented Google
But I take your point, that is an excellent feature of GP+
that's appreciated. but paul is still more cool ;)
:P
It appears this F1 hobby of mine is going to require a bigger income to support it...
two parties works for me. Put me in the grandstand party ;) i shall explore on friday but want to be sitting pretty at eau rouge for qualy and race :D
To be honest, I bet I could find it IF I wanted it.
I would rather pay for it though as I have a lot of respect for Joe's journalism
i think if you tired it, you'd like it.
*tried.
Yay. First time I've heard that!
I'm sure I would.
Remind me in March
When has F1 ever been a cheap hobby? It never was here...
Gold 4 is uncovered, you could be thinking of 3
Step 2... tell newbie to get his credit card out...
grrr ;)
:D :D
It was until i joined sidepodcast!
All I need now is my Brawn tshirt and my purchases are complete for the moment.
#sorryamy - still haven't phoned that Melbourne shop
what if i refused to come to the pub until you bought a subscription?
I don't actually know anybody else who is an F1 fan
ahve you seen our range of t-shirts and mugs?
yay! although the hoodies look even nicer :P
My excitement for the year builds as the year unfolds. Reading the archives won't be the same
I'll do a deal, I'll sign up in the off season. I'd have to have a full year, no point in it ending next Sep if I don't renew
deal.
I'd tweet, Qik, email and MMS to make you jealous :)
I have seen glimpses of gigles collection, but not the new range...
If you can help me convince 5livef1 to take me in i will go on a shopping spree!
ha.
You won't remember but I will
Luckily I'm an upstanding member of the community
[Stop laughing, I know that no one believes that ;)]
i can't help you. maybe cheeekeymonkey84 can?
:P
I want to keep talking about Spa but I have to go to bed.
Until tomorrow, then..
night pat.
Im scared of her... shes a girl!
I will tweet them in the morning!
Night!
See ya Pat
There'll be more chat tomorrow, no doubt
I shall pester my man about making Spa related plans.... I tried to get him to comment on here before but he said it looked scary :(
You need to get Alex and Steven on this. They do much more annoying plugging ;-)
no doubt you'll also continue to try and get me to come to London to discuss it in person.. :-)
Have you seen her. She's not scary. Oh no!
Mr C: Get CheekyMonkey on a phone-in and I'll sign up to GP+ the following day!
Must have been the spiders!
Talking of which, my bath spider has returned
Or maybe it's his younger brother
I think it's the strange men I'm sat up talking to in the middle of the night....
it just occurred to me, that we don't plug it enough. all morning was spent plugging autosport subs and when was the last time they called us on a thursday evening?
us???
Hey, I resemble that remark!
she's commented on the parade lap. that's the best i can do sadly.
did you show him the panda? pandas aren't scary...
So he's a lurker :)
Hi Mr A!
[waves]
I want to hear the accent
I didn't show him anything as such.... I told him to look over the phone. I'll pester him again tonight, you can say hello....
what accent?
She's commented on a Debrief too
[More recall]
She's Northern Irish
you are quite scary! :)
oh. righto. is it the way she types?
With all this attention is it any wonder she scurried off!
Hmmm he wouldn't look long enough to lurk. Maybe he came back after I went away. Can you see where people comment from Mr C?
I can remember how to fix aeroplanes
How hard can the rest of this recall thing be :D
i just remember struggling to say the name during the parade lap, because it seemed to have too many eee's. then she turns up in the renault garage and i wasn't invited. if that doesn't equal moderation for life, i don't know what does?
No. It's when she says
"I'm from Northern Ireland" :)
:)
bah why cant there circuits be like albert park and have distinct names for grandstands so i stop mixing then up. I think the view from uncovered looks better too but if everyone else goes covered ill tag along. If we split between the two ill go get rained on :D
I don't want to stalk her
I just want to hear the accent
I love the N.I. accent
Put wing though slot A, put tail though slot B, attach nose weight...
Even i remember how to do that!
I'm up for a good soaking!
yup. but stats are a pain at the moment. our lovely web host are useless in that department!
ahhhhh :)
I was wondering about that at the time
Hey people - subscribe to GP+, like me :D
And remember how you took it off when you put it back on.
Yeah, that's pretty much it
Do you want a job?
As I said to Gavin ast week, how are you at Flap Track Lubing?
Eau Rouge!!!
I got a GP+ subscription the first time you did a chat with Joe. You obviously didn't plug your own site as well as you did his as I didn't come on here for months after that....
bugger!
joe's from NI, can we ask him instead?
Yes and that sounds easy peasy
You guys need to self promote a lot more
Or delegate to Alex
You need to get those sound-bites out.
Channel Dvorak!
Can of WD40, how hard could it be ;)
Next show you do, there'll be no space for content. Pure plug action....
always been hopeless at it. i think i've sussed the retweet button now.
No. wrong kinda chromosome combination
Plus, he sounds English??
not THAT joe :)
Shocking
Aeroshell Greases actually
Unless it's Josephine
No :)
i tried my bestest.
Do you know how to fix copiers, apart from kicking them and switching them on/off?
Neither do I, I just pretend.;)
Mr C:
To add to my badge stars
Safari 4 under Snow Leopard struggles sometimes to use the LCLT filter
64 bit mode
Now, you HAVE to get it :)
That IS how you fix copiers, isn't it?
i would have imagined that would rock?
both of our audio devices now have snowy drivers... only sidepodradio is preventing upgrades :)
Yes, and blame the paper.
@MR C.
Next time your talking to Joe, maybe you could suggest a bit more info on the GP+ page about subscribing - like, how to do it and what happens? Being a very trusting fellow, I just paid first, then went looking for instructions, but the site doesn't actually say how the process works....
October upgarde then :)
can do, will do. ta.
Something about a slow script
Next time it happens I'll drop.io a screenie
You've been listening to Mac OS Ken, haven't you? :D
today's thread?
No, whenever
I struggle to comprehend just how good the Formula 1 videos are at http://www.formula1.com/play_video.html
I mean, they're good. It's the FIA
??
Its Bernie!
Even worse
He doesn't even know the internet exists
The sidepodspace show is more or less ready-ish now so tomorrow night I am going to be bugging people to come on the F1 show. I know Bassano is doing 20 minutes on suspension technology but we have another 5 minutes to fill so we need comments opinions etc.
You can't say he doesn't try :)
oh bassano have i told you that i love you? Want some money? ;)
Why dont i get this treatment!
I can talk colours.
Sliver. Red. Blue....
When I book I'll let you know buddy
£25 would help him out no end.
You need to start with an Orange Drill...
:D The man is learning.
Anyone know what the % is that PayPal take for withdrawals, off hand?
i'm off to get some sleep as i've finally finished most of my work! wohoo! :D and i need 4 hours sleep before i need to get up :( tomorrow is going to be hard. night allx
Night Lou
Another expert? How could we get so lucky?
Night!
See ya Lou
Some sleep is better than none
he is right, its all for the drill. Spa tickets are just the cover story
Night Lou
Amy, I warn you now. I don't think I can do Monza
A couple of days in Bruge or Brussells on the other hand...
Night Lou, we'd love to hear from you on our phone-in show!!
Why is it, when you ring up about a repair that the shop has had for 2 months it's always "just been finished"?
thats ok, alison is doing monza ;) i am aiming for one day in brussels then off to berlin :D
"Rubens, you're on fire. You're seriously on fire Rubens, like PROPERLY on fire"
http://www.formula1.com/play_video.html
Spa
Engineering school, day one
How to lie to the customer
Updated the show page
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/F1+phone+in+show
That's the attitude
I knew there was a school for this stuff
Lesson two
Over estimate cost and time of repairs
Hey! It turns out this show was my idea!
Now I have to call in
I'm not even looking
You have to now.
Alison,
go into the wiki now Paul has committed and tell someone else it was their idea. I told you we could get lots of people on the show
You get billed as special guest star. What more could you want?
:D sneaky sneaky
I promised Alison I would get lots of people to phone in so I have to try a few things
Skype has a system where you can test your mic levels and everything right?
Not sure about Mic, but you can test your audio
Yes. You can phone in and leave a message and it will play it back to you. It's called Echo / Sound test
Yes, it also has an auto leveler i belive
Cool. OK.
Suggested Grandstand seating for Spa
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/eau-rouge-jpg
Steven, shall I put you down as a "quite likely"?
Sounds like a ploy for more voicemails....
All saying "test one-two"
God knows what people say if they think no-one's listening.... Maybe some people are more creative!
Definite maybe
I blew that opportunity didn't I?
Sorted
Have also added a column for Grandstand or General Admission preference
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Spa+Grand+Prix+2010
When we buy them will we all be doing it at the same time so we can sit close?
Dunno
We may need a single point of source for that
That's a lot of money floating about
Small groups is more likely
Allison, the Walloon region where Spa resides is a French-speaking southern region of Belgium
I'm sure you could get by on Flemish though
I've been made well aware :P
Thats true
Personaly i would rather buy them though the circuit directly than a brokerage website... hopefully it will be a bit cheaper that way even if we have to wait a bit longer...
They speak Australian too, right?
Don't we all
They practically invented beer, so yes!
Of course. Just with a funny accent and some different words
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
Sounds just like Queensland
There's your answer :)
:D
But it was a Scotsman that sung that
Though they'd struggle witht size of the beer glasses
No midi's in Begium
So you can translate then?
Oi!
Go Maroons!
He moved to Australia when he was about ten so no
Cant of been... it would have been a Bovril sandwich! :P
SPAM?
Neeps and tatties, more likely
corned beef perhaps?
Hehehe that doesn't live in a sandwich!
No one loves spam as much as the Hawaiians.
It is everywhere!
Bovril rocks by the way, especially with melted cheese
On a sandwich?
In a bubble and squeek, chip butty stylee
How did you ever have that combination?
Do they have vegemite or marmite in New Zealand?
Cheese toastie, try it
Marmite and jam sandwiches are amazing...
Vegemite
Bleurghhh!
Oh my gawd
Though they had a competition to name a local alternative and one of the suggestions was "Pa Won't"
True
What kind of jam?
Really must work.
Later guys.
The Real JB just tweeted an updated from Japan
I thought I'd catch him when it's quiet with:
@The_Real_JB Thanks for the update fella. Do us a favour, answer Lou's emails please. Speak to your people
See ya Paul
Standard first reaction... followed by
... How can it be so good when they taste so different!
Red flavour ;)
Beef & berries is just wrong
Its yeast not beef!
Sorry, am thinking of Bovril
Still wrong
Try it... it will suprise you!
Don't have any nor desire to
Ex-girlfriend's folks brought over an Aussie care-pack but that's long since expired and chucked I think
Was squeezable Vegemite tube :)
You are missing out!
Race reports from 1955 kinda make the Autosport subscription awesome...
I hadn't considered the uberarchive they must have
They were moaning about processional races even back then! :D
Hows the aside going MrC... still at the grindstone?
Clouds of silence seem to have descended into doohickystan
done. i think. just listening back.
Awesome! :D :D :D
I really liked this article on crashgate...
I dont know who wrote it, but its certainly a lot better than what the brittish press has been dishing up of late
Did you get suitable plugs into the show?
hehe. gp+ might be mentioned :)
I am writing a letter to Joe...
Indeed. It's an excellent article, and deserves to be shared with others. And this coming from a Malaysian, for whom English is not his first language.
doesn't he have blog comments for that?
maybe, but this is a bit longer, i will put it in my blog when i send it tomorow
shall read shortly.
The more things change...
Morning
hey jackie. how's things?
Not bad thank you, how are you?
Doohickeystan? We're a country now? :D
Morning, Jackie. :)
mm, v.good. just updating x1 rss feed and then heading for sleeps.
thank goodness its the weekend after today
now that's decication :D
ooh yes. you have any plans?
Hi Journeyer :)
i got brownie points for doing it last week :)
No not really, catch up on some rest on Saturday and then chill out listening to the radio show on Sunday
You not really worried that it all goes to plan on Sunday .. I'd be having kittens
christine is doing everything. really, so much work it's crazy.
we need to get her some flowers .. donations on the playground if anyone's interested
sounds like a brilliant plan!
I think that would be lovely recognition for all the work she (and you) are putting in
Ok i have finished my letter... not sure if it should be a comment or not though its over 550 words...
Ready to tuck into the aside :D
I'm saving that for later in the day :)
wow. you was inspired.
can i send it to you tomorrow for your opinion?
I want to read though it when i wake up first to make sure its not just late night ramblings ;)
no worries. i'll be around from 11am(ish).
cheers, thanks for the graveyard shift editing!
it's actually amazing the work you do for this site - not to mention you have MFC too!
it's so much fun though!
sounds like a good name for a website
You two really need an index site for avid followers (or stalkers)
index site?
Yeah - an index of the various blogs.
muhaha i bought a usb charger on my lunch break so now i can spc all day! Bad things happen when i am not here, like the suggestion we eat vegemite in nz. Blasphemy, that is horrid australian stuff! Marmite all the way.
ahhhhhh. that we can do. good plan.
Ah, that Malaysian article was done by a journalist from the Straits Times .. there was an article on the light flag system in use at Singapore done by them on you-tube last year
flippin' genius :)
(we're gonna need a bigger database)
:D
Morning Amy
Awesome! :D Marmite rules!
Euch holds nose .. it smells
But it smells of marmite!
sleep calls. night alls.
True, personally I think it's horrible
night night, sleep well
Night mrc, loving the aside so far!
wonder if Joe has heard of Mr Andronov
Felipe Baby is the latest Expert!
http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2009/9/9942.html
Nice to hear from him. :)
Q "In 2000 you won the Formula Renault 2.0 Euro championship with 140 points. Which current Formula One driver failed to score even half of your points’ tally?"
FM: Kimi.
Correct
LOL
apparently nz marmite is different to uk marmite or so wiki says.
Never mind bad things - big things happen when you're not here. :D
Ahahahahaha! How comments has Amy made? Must be in the thousands by now. :D
Night, Mr C. :)
You will have to try the good stuff! ;)
i was never on the top 5 mr journeyer, unlike yourself!
:D
:D mind you, if it was still around now, you'd top it easily. :)
I dont think i would be, it may not seem like it but most of the days discussions are when im not around.
You just aren't trying these days.
quality wins over quantity.
Vegemite rules!!!!!
dont tell new zealand but i quite like the new vegemite with the cream cheese
you weren't putting enough real butter on when you made vegemite on toast with the real stuff then
there is some relationship between twisties and vegemite but I can't remember exactly what. Twisties are made from vegemite maybe? Work is keeping me from my research!
I'm just 2 timezones away from you, yet I managed to top the lists. Since you're around here roughly as long as I am daily, I can easily see you top. :D
there was plenty of butter but vegemite sucks. Australian twisties suck too, that must be the link you are thinking of
Our island is bigger!
Morning everyone!
I have just subscribed to GP+ now I will have the ideal way to keep up with all of the exciting action of the rest of the season.
The main question with a GP+ subscription is... why don't you have one?
Good to see you got the book Paul!
Now THAT is a plug! :D
Now this book that you bought Journeyer... Does it contain a detailed archive of all of the goings on from each and every race weekend going back to the beginning of the 2007 season?
;)
Yeah, cool. I look forward to reading this weekend.
Yay!
My problem now, is how to get it signed by the author.
Might have to send it along with Amy on her trip
WooHoo! I have my GP+ subscription from Joe.
I (heart) his random username
bonjour mr alex. I am pleased i helped your wallet by buying from lulu. I hope this will cover the cost of your sidepodhospitality when i land in the motherland. ;)
No. BUT, it does have accurate replicas of a whole bunch of stuff, like cutaway drawings of a Lotus car from the 60s, Stirling Moss' contracts with Maserati and Cooper, and race programmes from British GPs in the 1940s and 1950s. :D
Oh dear. I think GP+ must be connected to me by a wet piece of string. Downloading a PDF is going to take 10 hours?!
The motherland?! I thought that was New Zealand? :)
Or perhaps Germany.
I told Mr C he needed you on the case.
england is the real motherland, commonwealth, queen lizzy and what not
....and I can smugly say "I've already got one", had it for hours
that sounds like it could work :)
:D You make it sound like another planet. :P
thank you for your purchase :) I will buy you a new Zealand beer in London with my profits :)
sounds like you're going to need both then :)
is the QE2 the mothership?
Morning
Is that a euphemism for you thinking she's fat?
britannia rules the waves! I am on a tram on my way to get belgian chips.
mmmmm Belgian chips
Has anyone linked to Martin Brundle's opinion on the Renault saga yet?
I heart this quote:
Quite.
Indeed! Good Spot Gavin, and very true from Martin!
mmm Belgian chips indeed.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/18092009-003
oh no! I am home but I have to go back into the city! Noooo.
Booo!
I can't see the chips because drop.io has been blocked at the office!
:D
Indeed - Martin had to do that for his McLaren drive in 1994.
Don't forget that in his early career he drove for teams that were broke or rubbish too!
Cheers ;)
But Brundle was 35 by then
And he wasn't asked to crash in the mean time
By his manager
As Martin says the loser here is the sport.
In many ways I expect this kind of thing from Flav. He never believed in the sporting aspect and is always going on about Entertainment... A driver winning from 15th place in an exciting new venue!
Now thinking back... Do think Luca Montazemolo was getting at what I think he was getting at when he called the Singapore Grand Prix a circus:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/oct/01/lewishamilton.formulaone
And we all thought it was sour grapes.
Ooh, it was dark when I woke up. Proper Autumnlike.
Nice, I had a daughter jumping on my chest. Proper trampolinelike
Morning all,
Morning.
Always tougher to wake up when it's still dark (and cold!)
My goodness. I think he suspected something was amiss with the win. But wow, he was spot on. I take back whatever criticism I had for LDM over that incident.
Tell me the clocks are not changing on a Grand Prix weekend, I can't cope with that
Is that what Autumn's like? Morning. :D
Between Brazil and Abu Dhabi... phew
does anyone have the sidepodradio url handy please, I haven't got it bookmarked on this computer?
you need an awesome bar :P
what I actually need at this precise second is a computer with administrator rights, but I haven't
I'm actually having to use microsoft paint, it's very depressing
then i feel your pain,
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodradio
muchos gracias
I am almost scared to say why I had to go back out again in case I get moderated. It wasn't very m|f|c of me.
*did not just go back into the city to specifically purchase the new pearl jam cd, no, not at all*
Morning! I saw the sunrise the other day... I think it's on the drop somewhere...
he he
I did briefly consider for half a second just buying it on iTunes but they're the only band in the whole wide world that I buy cds from because I heart the way they package them.
How long did it take you round trip to the store... That seemed pretty quick.
:D
about 45 minutes. Would have been quicker if the trams were on time. Boo public transport, booo.
A quick poll, how would everyone describe Journeyer? (pretends he's not here)
As somebody who is here?
Ecclestone on Flav "It is a pity that Flavio has ended his Formula One career in this way; you can't defend him at all, what he did was completely unnecessary, but it's a pity that it's happened. Sometimes good things come out of bad - at least he'll have more time to pick the (football) team now."
Umm....nope....he's going to be got rid of by the club
Err... that'll do. Any advance on that? I have to introduce him on sidepodradio quiz
one of my non F1 friends who I said wouldn't even know all this was happening actually asked me about it today.
him: "how is crashing race fixing? isn't crashing a bad thing?"
I didn't even bother trying to explain how crashing in this case helped the team because I was quite sure it'd go over his head.
You have to get up very early in the morning to be up earlier than Journeyer if you live in the UK because he doesn't.
And how about Steven Roy?
Is someone going to sugest "Somebody who isn't here"?
Was just about to :)
Okay... Hold on...
He knows quite a lot of stuff.
He also knows quite a lot of stuff.
And likes to volunteer people to do stufff
He thinks more of Heikki than most other people.
Thanks guys, think I have something to work with among all that
:D
Journeyer
In the left corner we have Journeyer, The Memory Man of Manila, weighing in with a staggering number of comments on Sidepodcast and an encyclopedic knowledge of F1.
Steven Roy
In the right corner we have Steven Roy, The Scottish Suggester, no fact too small, no strange piece of information too strange, for once the volunteer has been volunteered. To test his knowledge!
Ah too late!
The world's fastest Filipino?
And would like more Scots in F1!
More like it, will have a play around, thanks
likes THAT man?
But their engines went during qualifying, so they're not allowed to use them again anyway under the rule to prevent teams having a qualifying engine. Correct?
Depends what broke, if it was an axillary part then they can just replace that, but it didnt look like something like that
It shouldn't matter what they repair, an engine removed between qualifying and the race cannot be used again.
It can be used again, it just cant be repaired and then used again
Just checked the rules, it can only be used in Abu Dhabi - which I guess might have made the difference to them
Story from Autosport - it looks like Lotus are looking for an experienced F1 team manager to take on the role early next year.
Hmmm... let me think now... F1 team managers, with recent experience, but now out of work.....
Well, I can think of one :)
Morning :)
Morning!
:)
buongiorno!
Buongiorno Amy!
On that note, goodbye. My sister has missed her bus to work. I'm gonna have to drive her in :(
FIA could throw him out if he came back
I know I'm late on this but I have been reading all the comments, I don't and if had lots more money and time that would convince me ;)
:)
I don't think they will take him though.
boo! see ya
Yay, Friday nights.
I even have a good book to read!
arrivederci!
(my italian is soooo good ;) )
GP+ is 67 pages. I'm not sure I can print that on the color laser printer at work :-(
Will that help in Belgium and Germany?
Woohoo!
Boo. It is not lots more money, just some more money. £25 for 50 issues is a bargain.
What??
shhhhh
I was thinking of printing it out to read - better not now.
Does that not defeat the point of an e-magazine?
Why do you need to print it?
yes it does. I always want more than i can have
I don't really.
ok, ok I'll read it on my computer.
Not necessarily
does the iphone read pdfs? I could try it on there.
Shhh stop trying to convince me. :)
What a great deal GP+ is. I think everybody should subscribe.
Thing is, you can't use money as an excuse. If you keep on reading back through the comments, Mr C is apparently issuing challenges in return for subscriptions.
Yes
Exactly... 50p an issue! Bargain of the century!
1 weeks worth of coffee for 3 years worth of work from the man!
Next challenge - how to get it on there......
email?
Do tell?
Yeah, I mean, I've been a long time supporter. Had my subscription for, oh, something like 10 hours now.
Is this a #mediafuturechange story?
The freesheet The London Paper will be given away for the last time on Friday - BBC News
The reason is, this was a free paper targeted at "young people who get their news off the net" - but it failed and made losses...
That's one good way... Or you can use the air share application
I have no idea. I was asleep.
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/09/18/daily-18th-september-2009/#comment-495137
ah yes. Maybe Stanza will read a PDF? I need to investigate
The reason is that Rebekah Wade has always hated the concept of free papers and has just been promoted from running the sun to running News International UK. Or at least a big part of the reason.
woah! thatss huge news!
Ok. I'll look into it later. :)
Have published a post for collecting links and stuff: http://mediafuturechange.com/2009/09/18/story-board/
Is that media future thingy on itunes?
itpc://mediafuturechange.com/feed/
for now atleast ;)
Think of it this way... Imagine you got the chance to meet up with joe and he said, "I'll talk to you for an hour about F1 if you buy me a cup of coffee". You would wouldn't you!
You wouldn't begrudge the man a cup of coffee would you?
It's £2.50 in my local Starbucks for a cup of coffee.
Joe has done 10 Asides for us. That's £25.
So basically you're buying him a cup of coffee for each show and getting thrown in for free 3 years of back issues of an excellent magazine and the fastest way of getting a fully featured race weekend report every race for free.
Not yet, but Mr C did a fancy thing:
itpc://mediafuturechange.com/feed/
He's good like that.
He's so clever. Look - it just works!
If there is any spare time on sidepodradio, get Alex on to plug things ;)
Thanks - bookmarked the page too!
At this rate the spare time will be from me not finishing my shows in time... Blooming work getting in the way... I could be finished by now!
Mr C just said "put up your hand if you havn't subscribed" I felt too guilty and did it immediatly
Lovely, thanks Gavin :)
as if SPC wasn't taking up enough of my life.....
Ah, but that is not SPC. That is MFC.
MFC - for those unused 5 minutes in your day!
(I love it)
I'm not sure twitter can be good though
#sidepodradio
What is "Feeder Series" out of interest? I'm writing a plug for the show
NobleF1: Looks like lawn bowling is following the lead set by #f1 http://bit.ly/pi5Q6
;)
It's a show about the feeder series for F1, so GP2, World Series, Formula 2, and the national series too.
Oh?
Cheers
*cough*
I still don't get it. It seems silly
This was mentioned earlier, but how does this affect the "New Lotus" bid?
Lotus boss plans to step down soon
And replaced by Symonds as mentioned previously?
those pesky Kiwis!
#MFC - ebooks! yes, more on ebooks
Wasn't sure if this would have been good for #MFC so I'll link it here for now :)
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/09/itwinge-keyboard-turns-iphone-into-blackberry/
It's horrible horrible horrible.
WOW! thats the coolest thing ever
eew. It is.
Anyway, I have a blackberry too, not nearly as much fun
That is an awful name as well.
iCringed when I saw it - the iPhone touchscreen is nice and not too bad to use anyway (and I hate small phones as I have 10 thumbs!)
I'm trying to sort out my rss feeds. any suggestions on a good program to use?
God, that stupid news service is wheeling out Franck's name again. Grr.
Google reader is pretty good - works anywhere and mobile too!
Oh the iphone is so clever. upload pdf and there it is, readable!
#MFC
I guess this didn't turn out to be true :(
http://stuff.tv/news/Amazon-Kindle-to-launch-in-Europe-next-week/13104/
Panda sighting!
Agreed!
Aren't we all waiting for the ASUS?
I'm glad I didn't know that in advance, would have been really disappointed!
Me too...
Is there any way you could make you own kindle?
I mean, AppleTV doesn't work here because there are no films or TV shows for rent ... but I made one using a Netbook, wifi, iTouch remote, and TV connections...
The problem essentially is the screen... I don't think there's a good way around that one.
By the way, my stapler is working today. I think it is because of all the good advice yesterday.
Proff. Giggle's video is pretty awesome, i learnt lots. I never knew you werent allowed to staple in the air
Yay!
he needs to be careful of teaching us too much. What if in some sort of horrible Giggles meets Giggles accident I was to staple the pages of his book together?
Uh oh... Then I would need to teach you how to use the staple remover.
I have just found that Wetpaint have added a whole host of new templates for pages, mostly centered around TV character and episode lists, and Gaming reviews and cheats.
Where are the sporting ones? Boo.
I did put this on twitter but in case you don't see it... terrible joke alert:
Have you heard about the new corduroy pillows? They're making headlines!
Hasn't it been made #MFC redundant?
I have added a picture of one of those to the drop in case you are curious.
mmm chips
I have provided you all a new challenge - because I know you are bored:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/100+Reasons+to+Watch+Formula+1
I'm in :)
Hehe, love it!
What I really wish was I was at home... doing Sidepodradio :(
Aww, me too. We has to earn a crust though.
I'm in too ;)
Yeah... spose... ;)
with a right align that doesn't work *kicks chrome*
Don't worry about that, I was just being fancy :)
Me too, wondering if anonymity might not be a good idea though
:)
Hark at you, italicised too :-P
Haha!
YAY!
(you're my new favourite)
good question.
that was quick!
I have potentially made all future additions both right aligned and italicised now as well. I don't know if it will work, and I have no idea what Chrome will say about it.
You need a wiki page too.
busted?
i'm not sure you're meant too!
Nah... They keep turning it on then I ask them to turn it off... They don't like the concept of web based storeage.
you are good at this!! what a pitch :)
ahh, phew.
On the flip side, I paid the money in March and haven't had time to read any of them. Or Autosport come to that.
I am not here.
Have you listened to the Asides?
Mr C... Right... Now you're here... I have a suggestion for you... But first a question... The bit that remembers my username, e-mail, website etc is that hitting the database or is it stored on my end?
not one issue? do you not search them when doing blog research? it's like a massive database on your desktop.
your end. in a tasty cookie.
I know it wasn't asked to me but I am right now. I'm listening to them in reverse order. :)
Blog Post Plug ;) http://f1loonie.wordpress.com/2009/09/18/10-pole-to-chequered-flag/
why would you do that??
there are people on twitter who have their spa tickets and i am jealous.
I don't know. I listened to the latest one first and then just went from there. I realise I should have gone the other way. ;)
He is a loonie it says so in his comment.
:)
*cries*
I started transcribing 11 then realised I hadn't finished 10. Whoops.
:)
I feel bad now. :(
Hehe. Don't. Mr C cries when he sees how I consume podcasts. Each to their own :)
for those who have not been convinced, I quote the great Joe Saward:
"going to Monza is such a pleasure because its the only proper race track left, the only place where you see cars really going for it big time. Spa is good but Monza is better so it’s always a bit of a treat so its always a bit of a treat."
Go on. Treat yourself. ;)
Right good that's what I thought...
Can't you make the whole of the site cached and only clearing the cache every 5/10/20 minutes except for if you use doohicky / LCLT.
For people who are use ye olde comments it won't work so well because pressing F5 will only give them the same page for the next 5/10/20 minutes straight out of the cache but you could put a link at the bottom of the comments but before the commenting box saying, "not seeing latest comments try the doohicky".
And finally if regular users start complaining because they don't see the latest post on the homepage etc you could say that if the user is logged in "with a cookie" when they make a request it could request fresh pages.
What do you do? Start from the very beginning?
(I do that)
I often go back to the beginning of a new subscription, I can't listen out of order, and I have so many that I am months behind and will still listen to things like TWiT even if they are old.
Most of them, got a couple still to go. Tonight's plan is to eat into my 55hr podcast backlog.
I remember reading Melbourne's (the free one that convinced me to sign up). The only research I do is on Forix, usually for what's on this week.
Think I have to vanish again.. 'til lunchtime ;-)
I don't always start from the start but I often do. I always listen in order and couldn't skip one.
Hey Pat - I finally started watching IRL and GP2 last night! I'm catching up! ;)
Same here.
The one thing I have to say about MFC is there is no link on the homepage to the RSS feed. I know its a work in progress but not everyone knows you can add feed to the address and find it ;)
wouldn't that be really annoying for the user?
the weird thing will be, when you post a comment, it won't appear. it'll just vanish. and there won't/can't be a warning to alert the user what has happened. so then what does they do? my bet is they'll post it again and again or give up. we'll see repeat comments in dohhickey and they'll think the site's broken?
what about google? i can't really email sergy and tell him he needs to login to spc to index the latest content.
Fixed.
Thanks :)
No ;)
Google will only ever be 20 minutes behind is that the end of the world?
Actually if you did the "if you have cookies you see the live data" thing the posted comment would work because you have to fill in the fields to add the comment.
Hello all
Is future media change podcast in iTunes yet or destined to be?
the way the web is going, with things like pubsubhubbub. i'd say very soon 20 seconds could be too long.
i get what you're saying, and the wp-cache plugin will do exactly as you describe. almost word for word in fact.
i think though in my mind, wordpress is history in terms of what we do from now on, and the sooner we simply remove it, the better ;)
Pubsub...wha?
Not sure about that one.
Media Future Change though, is destined to be, and Mr C has a sneaky link until then: itpc://mediafuturechange.com/feed/
You should hear him say it out loud. :)
:D
Ta
It sounds like what my sister used to call a hot water bottle as a baby... a hoddlewaddleboddle :D
Don't forget the kajillions on the Euro Lottery tonight
Enough to buy some low heat lamps and a new MacBook Pro
i commented the other day. it's what makes sidepodcast comments appear on friendfeed in real-time:
http://friendfeed.com/sidepodcastlive
in short, at the moment with your RSS reader, it checks every site every 15mins (roughly) or so and asks if the feed has updated.
with pubsubhubbub, we tell your RSS reader that new content is available. so RSS feeds become like twitter streams, they update in real-time.
enough for spa tickets for everyone :D ?
I am jealous of this dude
:D
*ahem*
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78704
breakout / no breakout?
Not another Renault one!
hahah :)
I cant tell you how sick i am of this whole thing now! Just get on with the hearing and then lets get on with racing
that doesn't exactly make the FIA look good!
Can we not just change the daily post to the Renault breakout threads? ;)
Haha!
No way, I needs my safe haven of rolling meadows and raindrops on roses, etc, etc.
No.
Either it means they wanted to keep it quiet for the sake of keeping Renault in the sport, or they wanted to keep it to use against someone later...
Or they didn't have proof? You ask Flav and Pat and they're just gonna say no
And Whiskers on Kittens?
Absolutely.
The thing is, where would we all be if Symonds had just denied it? The case would have been circumstantial at best...
Everyone needs Kittens!
I don't, they turn into cats :(
But cats are cool: (
Besides, I have an affinity with cats!
Extension of the same story, no?
I'm not a cat fan, they're too selfish
But they look after themselves and don't bug you all the time...
Yeah... What I was suggesting is basically a massive sticking plaster over wordpress.
In the future, I'm sure we'll be all about push and lest about fetch so the cacheing can be very strong because people who need to know are finding out through the correct method.
Afternoon all.
Live from Imola today (for now).
Certainly are.
Not necessarily. One of ours isn't at all.
Oooh Stuart you're there for the WTCC? Nice!
Don't forget about F2 :) I have an interview booked with a certain F2 driver on Monday
Indeed you do. Actually I like F2 at the moment... has the WTCC been worth watching this year?
One of ;)
Sort of. Arranging photography of all the drivers for the yearbook, and then have to leave in an hour - driving back to Bergamo and then hopping over to Barcelona tonight to spend the rest of the weekend doing Lambo work. Have brought my Alan Partridge gear and everything...
Interesting. Who?
Off to work, bye folks
see ya Mr Bassano
Jack Clarke
Bye Bassano
Mr C I think you'll like this ;) http://www.neoease.com/lets-kill-ie6/
How did you manage to book that?
It's Jeremy at our office's 40th birthday today... There are certain things that must happen when something like this occurs.
I asked him ;)
Birthday punches?
Did you give him birthday beatings? ;)
we had a 40th at our office today too. There was cake.
We don't seem to be as violent as the rest of society here.
Jon's life lesson #286: Don't pile up books vertically on your bed....it dosent matter how stable the tower looks, it will fall over.....onto you
What is this tradition?
We have had pastries and bacon sandwhiches
D'oh!
Quite a coup for you if he gets into F1.
Not us, it was Zoe.
I'm dissapointed that you havent shown us a picture of this cake...
You are of course...Amy, "the cake lady"
I didn't actually get cake, I was out of the office at the time. But I heard about the cake when I came back.
He's a couple of years of F1 yet, but he'll have a decent career in something
I'm dissapointed
He's a top fellow. His mum's here this weekend.
You never did it at your school?
We did...hense you never told anyone when your birthday was
Try not say anything about things going downhill from here.
Xmas 2012 when that day occurs for me :(
Christine, someone has asked on PF if the radio show will be put out as a series of podcasts at a later date?
He seems like a nice guy from a few emails i've sent him, there was no debate or asking what it would involve, he just said "Yes" straight away, i like drivers like that :)
October 16th 2030 for me ;)
One of the few positive reasons for having a christmas holiday birthday :)
24th April, Anyone care to guess the year?
I'm going to say your early 30's.
2018
I'm gonna say between 2015 and 2020.
2021
I'm off out for a bit... I'll let you know who was closest in a bit :)
Good! Hoping to do same next week on my week off.
agreed.
and even a sticky plaster can't save wordpress now.
2019?
Mr C .. are there any plans to put out the radio shows as podcasts at a later date?
bandage?
can we kill IE 7 too?
It doesn't work for me?
do you get the stats for who's using what browser? and is a high % still using IE6/7?
Ooh, tension builder!
We'll be right back with the answer after the break.
not sure. probably on show selector, yeah. i think the arrival of a space show and a comedy show on the main podcast thread might confuse anyone who doesn't check the site.
haven't checked in ages. in some ways i'd rather not know, it's quite depressing the number of people who don't upgrade.
thanks .. will let PM know, he's away for the weekend and didn't want to miss out
Alex: 2020, same as me.
whats the lowerst IE that works with doohickey/lclt?
ahh cool. worst case, they'll be on the drop.
:) sure.
the site? it takes a while to loads,
ie8.
so the people who still use 6/7 are doing so on the main site?
Kill IE full stop.
Installed IE8 on my PC (homebrew), as part of windows upgrades, slowed it right down. Uninstalled it, went back to normal.
Browser Fail.
you can read doohickey in ie6/7 it won't autoupdate.
ah ok
Do you know what your cooking on sidepodradio yet?
nope.
I'm not sure on that. I have something that tests websites in different IE versions. lclt works in 6...just.
Are you sure? This was posted from IE6 and it stays up to date with Firefox...
it does? how?
It isn't autoupdating but the comments are there but I'm closing it is going slowly. I'll try using IE6 on a old PC in a bit.
nope. i don't have either to test with. i'd be amazed if either received new comments automagically though.
doesn't surprise me, the IE javascript engine runs on steam i believe.
dictionary!
The power of IE!!! :D
It doesn't now...
Talking of Browsers, does anyone know how to set keywords in Chrome like you can in Firefox? My only way at the mo is to import Firefox bookmarks, then they work.
I think it would be fine with the right prefix and intro
I am using doohickey on ie6 here at work. *runs*
I'm not brave enough to do my own upgrade/install since I'm not really suppose to be using it much at all.
Can anyone tell me why the phrase "Yutaw Taw" is associated with Flavio Briatore?
you just keep refreshing?
Been reading the Singapore Transcript?
which one?
Pat Symonds: That just makes it worse for us…[inaudible] leaded lap.
Flavio Briatore: Let’s see the Japanese now yutaw taw.
Page 31 of the drop.io'd file
What the...?
seems to be autoupdating, just not as quickly as 'normal'
I will watch the polled time for a bit to see what it does
I love that "yutaw taw" is not [inaudiable] :D
The time updates every 20 sec.
The ESPN Soccernet Podcast is copying Christine by using a soundclip sent to her to pronounce a name properly :D
"jorg zander"
Kathi?
Huh?
That's the one ;)
Something About Yutaw Taw that i found on a Speedtv forum..
I can't find a thing on "Yutaw taw" either. I like the explanation on another site that Flavio, bored and obviously out of the loop with everything going on in the race, resorted to doing judo chops and making sounds to placate him since they were behind a Japanese driver...
Yutaw TAW! chop!
as in actually me or just the same method?
Same method - They asked how a Rumanian club's name was pronounced, and a listener duly sent an audio clip in, which they used on the podcast...
I am so glad this man has been kicked out of the sport!
Phew
:)
I've been googling for ages, and the only success I got was on a Japanese to english translation site, but there are far too many different meanings, that's if it's a real phrase.
I think it's Lukeh's lunch time..
"I LOVE GREGGS SAUSAGE ROLLS!!"
You can hear him from there?
has Greggs, can shout
;)
I think it is actually Chinese. The direct translation is "Wall - Hit - Now!".... :D .
:D
The date was 24th April 2020. I don't think anyone got it!
James and PatW did!
Pat did. Such a Flavio, that one.
Does anyone miss Flav yet?
He wears blue glasses?
Nope.
Only 5 weeks after my own!
April babies are the best.
:D thanks
oh no, with my Pearl Jam album I get to download 2 free concerts but there is 11 to choose from.
I don't do decisions!
How are you going to travel rould Europe next year?
Whoever is looking that far ahead... that is not the Sidepodcast way.
With a lot of advice from people who have been there, done that.
Some people are planning Spa next year. Crazy, I say
I agree.
Sidepodgrandprixmeetup in Spain for Alex's 40th? ;)
It's good to plan ahead - stuff is much cheaper!
What are the options? :)
Random twitter person has booked accommodation. I haven't even looked at what accommodation is available. Thus, we are not as bad as random twitter person, so we are OK :D
MrC i have sent you my crazy joe pk letter comment essay thing
Accommodation may be more important than tickets...
But how do you know you are going to feel like doing something a year in advance?
I have chosen one easily because only one of them has one of my favourite songs in the set list, which makes choosing the second easier because only one of them is older songs.
It makes me realise just how big their back catalogue is though, what on earth will they play when I see them!
I knowwww *freaking out*
My trip to Melbourne is still only in concept stage
Because it's something I've always wanted to do. We are talking about attending a Grand Prix aren't we? I haven't been to one for 16 years!
Melbourne is easy!
Thats what I'm hoping
We're talking about thinking ahead for anything. I guess it's just because I'm so fickle. Thinking more than two weeks ahead doesn't interest me.
How do you plan holidays, parties, meetings etc. then? I am curious now...
I feel odd if I don't have something massive booked to look forward to.
I don't plan parties. Holidays are spur of the moment, definitely less than two weeks. I don't plan meetings either. I have to attend them, but I don't plan them.
No. March.
The only song of theirs i know is 'last kiss' which is one of my favourite songs but i rarely listen to it...
and that was a cover :D
I Clearly know nothing!
Its music, we have never gotten along... when i was at my first secondary school every subject had a colour... Music was luirdly bright pink... I blame that!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMTPHa7HWGs
:D
Actually it would work well for holidays because last minute cancellation trips are real cheap!
ooh i like it... that song makes me sad and happy at the same time
Sidepodcast needs a smiley for this please :) :(
I do like last minute accommodation deals, I am sad these don't exist for Grands Prix. Unless it's Singapore ;)
They don't? So I have to actually plan for Melbourne?
Melbourne pretty much sells out, you'd have to go quite far out of the CBD to find anything empty.
It depends, i have often sorted out holidays about a week to 2 days before i go, it really can swing in either direction
Hehe.
For us, it is not about price. The best example I can give you is that Mr C and I got married on a boat. We booked months and months in advance and by the time it got to it, neither of us particularly wanted to go, and we didn't have a very good time.
Our Paris trip, though, was spur of the moment, complete chaos (thanks Honda), but soooo much more fun even though I didn't like Paris at all.
Really? Wifey and I always wanted to go on a cruise so I'm interested to know what it's like...
Mad rush trips like that often are :)
We didn't like it, but I think it is different for everyone.
It also freaks out a travel agent when you go in and say 'what holidays have you got' instead of telling them where you ant to go
Hence why we don't plan.
Webber would say thats because you made a very bad decision ;)
May I ask why not?
Another thing worth noting is, once I book something, at some point near the date I wonder if it is worth going. I wasn't keen on my holiday choice this year, but once I was there I loved it!
Lots of reasons. I don't want to go into it here. I can mail you about it if you like, but I really don't think our experience should be used as a benchmark.
ta. i look/
I'd like that, if it's ok with you - maybe it will help us in future when we consider looking at a trip like that...
all true.
Oh dear :) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/oxfordshire/8261287.stm
Remind me next week.
They weren't too worried about the methane emissions then?
That's quite funny. I'll bet he laughed too, knowing him :D
Will do, ta muchly :)
I am watching some Finnish F1 pundits, of which one is JJ Lehto. He didn't even make my top 5.
Silly people who claim to know so much but in reality are so naive...
Wow. Really?
I don't suppose they transported it there by bike either
Shhhhhhhhh, don't give it away!
It's hilarious they never know if they should look at each other or into the camera.
I don't think a guy who bought a Lightning and parked it in his front lawn is going to worry about a pile of poo there!
is that why hes wearing sunglasses :D
http://www.viddler.com/explore/vakief1/videos/6/
Should read these things first, horse-drawn cart
Amateurish or some sort of social problem?
Dont know if this has been mentioned, but next weeks race is under threat due to smog over Singapore from forrest fires..
Maybe they will have to run it during the day?
Who here uses Chrome and has upgraded to Chrome 3?
I love it - it's so much faster. But for some reason, BOL seems to think it suddenly crashes more?
They need a giant fan like we've got.
I like it but I miss the little search boxes on the new tab page. I know I can search in the addressy bar thing, but I used those boxes all the time.
Do they have any Pandas in Singapore? Because they won't be happy with that!
I thought it had been pouring it down all week?
I have, i really dont like it.
It seems slower, the start page has lost 3 mini windows and i have had 3 windows crash since i upgraded, cant remember it happening before.
If you still have the old one DONT UPGRADE
they've been doing that since 2001
and it also got stuck in fullscreen once as well, which never happened in the old version
But i have discovered themes in my attempt to get it to revert to the old version
7 reasons? Is that all?
ooh, i missed this.
Well I could provide hundreds but that would be unfair!
You could space them out a bit :)
Themes - look nice, often make things more difficult :(
I am planning to repeat mine further down and hope no one notices.
#invisiblecomment
did we talk about bmw's engine being out for the count?
am looking forward to a new front wing for the team. any chance it might be less ugly?
You should try to disguise the fact - put "The Finnish" instead.
nope.
and we can't forget "people from Finland"
Then next time "Drivers from Finland"
Vaguely, I eventually concluded they could only have used it in Abu Dhabi anyway
Drivers from Scandinavian countries beginning with F
When do you think they will announce that they are shifting development focus to the 2010 car? :D
Drivers with lots of K's in their name.
Drivers for McLaren from that place they seem to like a lot.
It's unbelievable that they've kept developing this year but gave up last year.
good point!!
Indeed. It just shows how all along they had the wrong attitude to F1 I reckon...
Hey Mr C, I forget who it was but overnight someone was asking for an index of everything we do. Guess what? There already is one!!
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Sidepodcast+Links
that wasn't the request though? wasn't it a request for an index of all of your blogs?
They're all on there. 'Cept Franck, I'll add him now. The other option is on my page where there is added RSS-ness.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Christine
ooh crikey! i can't argue with that
The foundations were there, but I have added a few things just now. Been tinkering, I have.
It's so obvious why you two are married.
Because no one else would be able to put up with us?
not just anyone can tinker.
I am away, really away, but how come there is no mention of gearboxes under "Things Christine does know about:"?
?
one to site tinker, one to wiki tinker ;)
oh. hehe :)
I
I have also created this page:
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Watch+Formula+1
To be filled in and linked to during sessions, rather than repeating things over and over.
Mr C, what have you done to your shortener that it now cuts the last character off. The link still works, but I am missing a 1.
what do you mean your names not Christin
was gonna fix last night, but i had a show to research, record, edit and publish.
i had to hack the links in the morning cause peoples was on my back about extra slashes :(
grr. developing during a season sucks. another back-to-back set of races means nothing will get done again for two more weeks. grr.
i (hearts) off season. muchly.
Ah. Fair enough. I hadn't noticed it. Thought you'd broken something else.
ah yes the one where Joe says you have to go to Monza.
he did?
oh i see. i heard it as "amy should really visit monza".
"Spa is good but Monza is better so it’s always a bit of a treat"
I interpret that as "go, go next year. Go to both"
:P
Afternoooooon.
J'ai retourne
in honour of Joe's wisdom I shall make some 1am toast and transcribe some more.
question. do fly's sleep?
never, they're a bit like Amy in that respect
hehe. we shall forward your work to joe and suggest you be considered for the role as his intern ;)
in that case i just witnessed a miracle.
frop.io or it didnt happen?
it's a bit late now.
"Earlier this year, Greenspan and Shaw's team made a crucial advance.
They showed that flies do indeed sleep, nap and get tired when their
schedules are disrupted. "They'll be moving around, doing what flies
do--which is eating and having sex--and some of them will settle down
and become immobile," said Shaw, the lead author on a paper describing
the finding, which was published in the journal Science."
turns out i lied \/ \/
it's just dawned on me those "arrows" will only work if your on doohickey
ahhh. no miracle then.
This is indeed a crucial advance.
doesn't seem to mention that they sleep upside down with their tiny fly legs sticking in the air. miracle might still be on.
I'll take the job if he can recommend accommodation options in all F1 cities :D
Isn't that called death?
Shame they aren't tiny links ;)
i thought so yeah.
which made it all the more surprising when the little thing just turned itself over and got up after four hours inverted.
Zombie fly?
can this be a new public holiday? Easter II?
well, we have x1 witness. which is one more than for easter I.
hmmm
miracle fly?
hehe.
I no longer like googlemail eveything I want to use is already taken :(
You might have seen a housefly, maybe even a superfly, but I bet you ain't never seen a donkey fly!
the trick was to sign up in 2004
I thought I did but apparently that account doesn't exist and my secondary email accounts have nothing attached to them. One of those accounts I used even before google. :)
But you couldn't unless you got invited?
I felt special back then, I got a code because I was a Blogger.com user and all my friends wanted me to invite them :D
and now the wait is on for a wave invite.
Have you signed up?
course. rollout is limited to universities or something first.
i have my first wave app ready and waiting though.
I may have tinkered a little with this page too: http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Dictionary
stupid, stupid people:
"ASCAP and BMI have their sights set on collecting fees from three main areas: downloads of music; downloads of films and TV shows, and 30-second song samples."
how can you buy a song without... ahhh i gives up.
I hope you have suggested this for the next MFC podcast.
http://mediafuturechange.com/2009/09/18/story-board/
Cant you get in early as a developer?
If not maybe amy could go and bang on their door, i think they are based in Australia
done and moderated :)
The music industry is in its death throws, all the smart young businesspeople dont go there anymore, they go to internet companies...
So, about this page, is anyone clever enough to take a letter and turn it into an N? Cos there was no N.
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Dictionary
I'm just listening to BOL about that... seems incredibly stupid that they want to charge for free promotion!
yo. Running out of intros at the moment.
Who does a set of letters and misses one out?
did we know that there's an android app coming to let you stream direct to ustream, instead of qik?
[linky]
Will it be as awesome as the tricorder app though ;)
sorry, you've outgeeked me :)
It could well be!
Star Trek always wins that one!
Its not as bad as it sounds, whilst it is presented in Lcars, it takes real world readings from all the sensors and produces charts and readings and the like
Wow the dictionary looks cool now!
Except for N.
Bugger. I am announcing that all words starting with that letter shall be banned indefinitely until a proper N is found!
If anyone is interested in a free copy of the new monkey island, it will be available from midnight in honour of 'talk like a pirate day', which is tomorrow
http://www.telltalegames.com/playlikeapirate
Hehehe.
Doh!
what happes? do we get put i jail or somethig?
:)
ad o that ote, see ya for owQ
Pesky Q's, seakig into my setece
Hi all.
I'll try to avoid words with that letter. :D
How are ya?
I do 't k ow what you are worried about, i am hardest hit!
Missi g letters!
A d a disc, i have lost a disc!
wait... she only banned words starting with it, so you can use words that just have it in the middle or at the end. :)
It won't help you, though. :D
Ick = Yuck? :D
Exactly - just words starting with that letter. Let's not be over-the-top about this :D
Nooooooo!
But it doesn't help ick, does it? :D
aughty Step for you! :D
Wait... this must be some sort of loophole - the Step is inaccessible! :O
Poor 'Ick
Should have been 'ooooooo!
'o 'aughty step
Ah thats good, but doesnt help me or ikki
Whats happe i g?
What about me?
Just think of poor RG. He has to spend half an hour on Sunday talking about the ostradamus Effect
You aren't allowed to use words that start with the letter that follows M. :D If it's in the middle or at the end, it's fine. :)
You can stick to Andy. ;)
You mea Su day.
Only words begi'i'g with that letter are affected
Am i ow Jo ?
Ah I understand. :D
Only word begining with that letter are affected.
What a surprise Irvine thinks cheating is OK?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/renault/6201647/Singapore-race-fixing-probe-Eddie-Irvine-says-cheating-normal-in-F1.html
I am shocked. What team would that be Eddie?
Jordan. :D
I didn't ban anything.
#blamegavin
I just realized. teehee. :D
dumb question of the day. how long has the mclaren homepage looked like this:
http://www.mclaren.com/
?
mclaren racing's home page has looked like that for ages, but i've never seen that for mclaren group
indeed. yet when you look at the 2 pages, the racing site is in PHP. the automotive site is in ASP.NET. :D
even the sports cars thing? am clearly not paying attention.
the sports car bit is new, because the car is new, so it must be recent.
the sports car intro thing-y-doo-jit is awesome!!
i love the exploding bit.
:D me too
the automotive site pays attention to detail, a Ron trademark.
the racing site looks like it still needs some work...
click "Menu" then "explore" it puts itself back together. uber cool.,
Must get to bed, eyes too heavy.
G' ight, everyone. :P
:)
see ya.
ight!!
I assume since the new car was launched
Sorry i have failed with the thread chaning again!
clearly not idiot proofed!
and i followed!!
I blame ick
I has dropioed transcript of Aside 10. Aside 11 is weekends work.
Yay!!
Here's your reward: http://www.f1minute.com/2009/09/18/menswear/
ahahahahaha. thats made my day
ahaha nice :D
Evening
Evening sir
Home sweet home! I'm so tired. I hate having to work....
Welcome back :)
you go crash in wall make team win now
:) I meant to come home after my duties as my sister's private taxi firm but then I got called into work!
Work is annoying isn't it. Especially when someone gives you a lot of work an hour before you leave on a Friday before a week off.
I did wonder why we hadnt seen you for a while
Booooo! I've got a busy weekend ahead as well.
I personally don't see the attraction.
I don't do boats. I'll add it to the list of "things I don't do" which seems to have grown recently.
ooh not good. Thankfully I sorted out the bulk of mine and told them I'd look at the detail when I got back..
You don't do boats, but you do underwater trains?
Me neither... Although it could be fun to do one which goes somewhere, like London to NY or LA to sydney.
Going round the med or the Caribbean seems like something i would rather save up for and do myself
don't get seasick down there.
Nick, you can put the N back now ;)
true
Ah I've never had that kind of job. I'm very used to just getting the daily routines out the way and trying to find some time to get special things out the way. I can't really not do something. The world would grind to a halt.
ahhh! 6 months later I have finally found out the identity of my twitter angel. He is "head of branding" at McLaren.
Great way of getting married and not inviting anyone.
Will remember that for next time my separated parents start trying to score points..
McLaren have a ranch?
Whats a twitter angel exactly?
it involves cricket.
heheheh.
I wonder why the head of branding gets to go to all the races. Sounds like a sweet job.
bah?
an excuse to link my video? don't mind if I do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYij-UpaoyA
but what does twitter have to do with that?
Hello, I return injured.
How are we in the past two hours?
he was following me and told me they'd be in the park on Thursday morning doing promo, when I enquired as to which part of the park they'd be in, he put my name on the guest list.
sporting injury?
hmmm do i get fast food tonight? i am planning a bit of a health kick next week...
And since when was the one show an hour long!
evening all :)
ooooh :D
Blasted stikers (hate the lot of them) hit it too hard from 5 yards out, wrecked me wrist.
Still saved it. (hah mr striker)
One last binge couldn't hurt.
Every Friday I think?
it was ridiculous, everyone else there was vodafone VIPs and not one of them was even watching what was happening, they were too busy "networking" whereas I was quietly dying.
Im thinking of keeping it... it makes me more "mysterious" :P
Again?
Did you manage to sneak off with any goodies? Like heikki's cricket bat?
Health kick next week means fast food tonight. Obvious
Hi RG & Lou
Evening
Man up!
what happened?
What if people start callimg you Mick?
I got a free Lewis hat ;) I wanted a Heikki one but there were none. I also kept the 'VIP' lanyard I got :D
I made sure to take advantage of the free food and drinks too. I could get used to corporate events.
'If you don't get bruises and a bit of pain as a keeper, you haven't played it right'
pr Rick?
Well, then people are obviously taking the Mick.
I'll get my coat.
It's a bit more manly than pulling a calf muscle putting your feet up.
Hehe, i love them too, Borris Becker spoke to me for about 5 mins because he thought i was someone important last year :D
I was never a keeper but I never left a football match without a few extra bruises
Fine!
Don't mention fly swatting injuries
if I ever met him I wouldn't be able to resist the urge to say "Boris, that's not a tennis racquet"
I didnt even talk to him about tennis!
Did you talk to him about Mika? :D :D
I am afraid not.... all we spoke about was dubai and his development down the coast http://www.aci-dubai.net/project.php?project_id=22
flash!
Fortunatly i was previously a property journalist in dubai so i could blab on about it without him really knowing i was just there for the free food and open bar ;)
Evening all, how are we today?
Scraping on by.
thats why I used to go to art gallery openings on Fridays :D
evening. I'm great thanks. you?
Good stuff. I'm also good cheers. :)
Mr Lukeh! I enjoyed your lunch time tweet :D
ah yes, I had a bit of a disaster morning so lunctime was greeted with much pleasure and capital letters :)
LOTS of capital letters ;)
I got dragged along to a couple of them, there were 2 problems
1- I dont know anything about Art
2- I find the concept of paying stupid amounts of money for Art... stupid
But the alcohol and volevonts were lovely :D
oh yes I don't even like wine, but I drank it when it was free.
I don't know anything about art either, the odd time I thought something was pretty it tended to be about $4000.
Hey guys :D
RG, did you send over the Nostradamus show yet?
That is the problem, but we can use to our advantage...
If we steak out a gallery and find someone about to waste a load of money on something, we can take a photo of it and get them to pay for us all to go to spa instead. Easy.
Evening. Guess who gave in to Codemasters evil plan to make me buy their games even if certain demos put me off? ;)
Its a meatier version of a stake out ;)
Tonight. Had psp skype issues with the psp. Just had time for the Bloggers and the filler. However, I promise, I promise, I promise it will be done tonight.
My mum said "what do you want for Christmas"
and I said "travel insurance"
so practical. So boring.
Good man! However, you may not see me on there for a bit since I am about to experience EA's latest offering ;)
Okay. Tonight really is the cut off, I'm afraid. As soon as it is Saturday, I can't take anymore submissions.
I was originaly going to get NFS but there spamvertising and a couple of bad reviews put me off.
I was about to go out and get Dirt, but then realised there are way to many games coming out
Was also tempted to get Shift but I've never, ever trusted the NFS series. at least with Dirt 2 I knew it was gonna be worth it. Do tell how Shift is though, if anything it's the most promising game to come from that series in years!
Okay, I've got the house more or less to myself so no pressure.
The reviews tell me it is. Just fired it up so intital thoughts coming soon. ;)
Woo!
DiRT 2 started well with me; I noticed the nationality Welsh is included for your driver ;)
Need for speed 2 was brilliant, but i havent played a game since!
Test lap at the start of career mode is imminent.
Hehe, thats always something i skip, I think my dad decided to permanently insure me himself as i am apparently a liability
These physics are going to take some getting used to!
I'm rather pessimistic in everyday life so I always assume the worst will happen.
I've noticed already the game lags behind a bit in relation to where I position the wheel.
hehe, i getcha, but if i spend money on something i always feel the need to use it! Which makes insurance a difficult purchase...
Its also easy to ignore it ;)
Set the handling to Pro, gears to manual and just left the ABS on. Now it feels much better!
And of course I won the first career race ;)
Right i am off to buy fuel and Burgers... What a combo
Don't get them mixed up!
until something happens
There's quite a few cars to choose from with my winnings from the first race. I'm tempted by an Escort Cossie... :P
Hello Sidepodchums.
Anyone interested in cricket and want to go to watch ODI (your guess is as good as mine) vs. Australia on Sunday in Durham?
I won two tickets through Vodafone via a competition they did on Twitter today which neglected to actually say it's all the way up t'North.
Hmmmmm. Lemme think.
Here comes the first race in my Escort Cosseh :P
Probably not I'm afriad. Tis a bit short notice and I think I have a bit too much to do on Sunday. Had you won on Monday and the game was Saturday, I'd have them.
Hehe. Try as I might, I can't give these damn things away! :-)
Great Comment from Joe:
Now, who here doesn't heart Joe after that? :D
Same problem Nick had the other day! He might be interested if he can travel...
Hello everyone, its the weekend and I don't have to work, yay yay yay!
wow, it's gone quiet all of a sudden. what's everyone up to?
Rugby league is on and planning the finishig touches to TNE.
I was eating, and thinking of things to do.
KInda zoning out without realising...
same!
Lukeh! You're a genius with pictures and stuff, right?
Whats up?
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Dictionary
Is it possible to take one of the existing letter and fashion some kind of N? Because I did fancy stuff, but there was no N. :(
They should be checking their twitter accounts or reading my blog - 'Making Up The Numbers' ;)
I just realised, with the ban on 'N' words until Lukeh makes an 'N', my blog is now called Making Up The Umbers!
ooooooooo!
Evening all. We're just having something to eat before clearing the kitchen to embark on the recoreded part of the Sidepodcookery programme. An ingredients list will be posted shortly.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/n-png
Is that ok?
Grr hold on, laptop doesnt like drop.io tonight. Sorry.
Ooh, I see it. That's PERFECT. Lukeh is my new favourite.
Not sure what the black lines are though? I'm a perfectionist and they are annoying me. Hold on again :P
How is it possible to do it that quickly?
No worries. Am just adding you to my favourites list :)
Wow. You're still on there from last time. Double brownie points for Lukeh!
have added a revised n for you :P
I love the dictionary, I have never seen it before, it is making me laugh so much!
Have added it to the page. Thanks Lukeh. I wouldn't have been able to sleep knowing there was a rogue text N on the page :)
The archives are an evil piece of work aren't they? I know someone who hates archives. Yeah, avid hater.
No problemo :) These N's have to be kept under control!
If I get your show tonight, I will add you to the list :)
*Rushes to the PSP*
Couldnt help myself.
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/archives-jpg
Did you see my post? we're trying to sort out the recipe and instructions for the cooking show. Ingredients to follow shortly.
Not that I approve, obviously, but...
Il aime les archives.
Ah, lovely. Thanks Andy.
I went through my mind what I have planned for sunday. Feel like I'm ready now! A productive day was had (in my mind, of course, I was a bit lazy elsewise)
This already awesome day just got better! :D
My aunt Jo who runs 5DAY Intensive Training Courses, which is who I'm getting lessons with (for free because they're cancellations ;) ) has just been on the phone to Mum and she's said in my week off I can sit in on the theory lessons in the test centre and get my theory test done during next week! :D
I told my friend about an aside with joe this morning, he wants to know where the b-side is...
The lovely Apple people sorted my iPhone dock issues and gave me the more expensive (but) correct kit for no extra dosh
w00t!
Looks like everyone has gone to bed early to be ready for sidepodradio
Am editing.
Just to check, it is Sunday the 20th not Saturday the 19th?
Another show? How many have you got to do now?
It's Sunday. Stp panicking
Feeling surprisingly tired. Also getting ready to do the preview blog post and wondering whether I should phone and leave a voicemail for sidepodradio, though I have no idea what to say.
i was working on it being sunday, if it is tomoroow i will be unable to do my show
Doing interviews with bloggers. I have too many now, am thinking I may need to do an edited highlights and release them all as Sidepodchats as well.
Please feel free to ditch mine, it was terrible
Say hi, plug your blog, and tell us what racing has been happening over the weekend.
I'm wondering whether to blog about Angels and Demons or not, and waiting for Peep Show :D
I'm also listening to Muse songs at 1.2 pitch for a stupid reason.
You should definitely leave voicemails
i'm listening to coldplay, getting all excited for tomorrow, plus i have a bit of a headache :(
We can fill in gaps with them or if there are no gaps release them after the event. I would much rather have too much material at this stage.
I was going to do one earlier in the week, then a hundred things got in the way including computer troubles. Besides I'm still massively behind on blog posts so there's no point.
Phew. That could have been tricky as I'm working tomorrow and then going out and I have to be at work right across the time that the Cooking show is on, so we have to record LPG tonight.
Damn, I also just remembered I need to set up my portable photo printer for tomorrow night!
Are you planning live photos of Mr C cooking?
Thank goodness, why would you scare everyone like that!
I thought people may need lots of sleep
39 hours? We would all be dead!
It's like Amy in reverse
Not exactly, it's for a charity thing I'm doing tomorrow night.
I've been thinking about actually turning Sim Racers Weekly into a podcast. Which would mean another blog. Hmm.
can we kill IE 7 too? {Comment #701}
You do realise that if you do that you'll render the site inaccessible to just about anyone viewing from a British public library (since they are nearly all on IE6 or IE7 and locked into that solution by their suppliers)?
Why would you need to live comment from a public library?
Could be a plan. Enough material for a weekly show?
Why wouldn't you need to live comment from a public library?
i don't want to kill this site's ability to be read by IE7. i actually want to kill IE7.
eg. render it useless. make it kaput. no more. an ex-browser :)
then no library in the world could use it.
If you have read all the books and get bored?
Why not? I've commented from my uni library before when my internet died I think.
There's always stuff coming out on VirtualR.net, pretty much a show of similar length to MFC maybe?
I just want to say how much I love how my last comment lined up there.
TNE is done.
If you want me to do a better ending or add some stuff, just say. It felt longer than 30 minutes overall, minus that very long pause where I forgot to plan that specific thing.
screen grab and dropio?
But thats a uni library, not a public library they are very different places in my experience
Because you would want to run out the door as quickly as possible?
What else are you going to do in a library? If you work in a library you can't be expected to go all day without doohickeying
Hmmm yes I suppose. I can envisage wanting to comment from some sort of public computer at some stage though.
Steven/anyone have you ever lived in Glasgow?
But why would you be locked down if you work there?
Can anyone tell me why the phrase “Yutaw Taw” is associated with Flavio Briatore? {Comment #731}
Because Flavio does not appear to know how to talk sense into a radio system when a Grand Prix is underway. That was the strangest of several odd utterances that appeared in the Renault radio transcript for Singapore 2008.
Well done RG
Surely a question for Joe? :P
I missed a trick, shoulda called it the Nostradamus Show, then it would be TNS and it would be the same as a famous Welsh football team.
Nope. I lived in Paris if that helps
mmm, archived symmetry
Would I?
:)
Not particularly :P
I'm getting restless here, I'm trying to look for flats in Glasgow but I can't work out what parts are reasonable to live in and what parts erm..... aren't?
And mine
evening all.
If everyone drops out I can do a live one.
we're not ditching nuffink :)
Students seem to like the west end / Crow Road area if that helps but I don't know that part of Glasgow at all well.
Infact
evening sara.
Evening!
Hehe, the 'you've done it, its going up' approach.
yo.
No, no. no
Yeah. I think the general rule seems to be, if I fancy living there I can't afford it :P
Am recording
:D I'd tell you to ditch mine but I didn't do one.
hey
am coding.
There is no pint destroying the quality with quantity though...
Hi Sara
are you saying christine isn't a brilliant editor?
That applies everywhere.
Many years ago when I lived in Glasgow, Partick (Crow Rd area) was reasonably nice. Failing that if you don't mind being out of town a bit, go for somewhere like Bishopbriggs.
WHAT? Why not?
Don't move to Paisley though.
LOL .. you walked into that Nick :D
Am Packing
She might not have a blog?
YOu don't get out of it that easy
Yeah, tbh Glasgow is cheap to live. I could get a much nicer place than the hovel I have here....
I am saying she is so good she will edit me right out the window :D
Well see I thought I might ring in instead.
And nope no blog for me yet.
Oh god no, not Paisley! Anniesland maybe or Riddrie near Alexandra park.
yay!
She should have one. Everyone should have one so they can answer the questions
I can’t find a thing on “Yutaw taw” either {Comment #747}
I've found a reference to Eutaw Creek and Taw Caw Creek, both of which are in the USA. Perhaps Flavio's utterance was an obscure reference to this?
I'm scratching my head here...
You should. Everyone should have some involvment in the day
Ahem .. where's your's Mr Roy?
I don't like the way its you whos answering the questions, you should have one. ;)
Well I don't because I like to be different.
I am not surprised you are sratching your head trying to understand Flav
Somebody has to ask the questions. That's my job
You could ask yourself.
Am sleeping
Hehehe not a huge risk of that!
Its best not to try to understand Flav it could lead you to dangerous places.
It would be unfair because I wrote the questions so I know the right answers
But there be no right or wrong answers.
I say that about Paisley see and thats where part of my family lives and are buried.
You have seen the psychological profiles we get back. Very informative
People handing out free websites on the streets of NYC http://www.barbariangroup.com/posts/3848-today_tbg_park_ing_day
I'm trying to work out whether it's worth taking the hit and getting somewhere part-furnished so I can start to build up my own collection of furniture.
Shift update - added a BMW M3 E36 to my garage :P
What are you going to do with it when you decide to disappear round the world for a few months?
You can always use inflatable furntiture to plug the gaps in the meantime...
Hmmm ever practical Steven. I was planning on just keeping my lease on my flat. What else am I going to do with my stuff??
Why would you need to live comment from a public library? {Comment #1148}
Because there are a lot of bored and not-particularly-wealthy teenagers out there that don't have their own computer and therefore use the ones in their local library to do anything computer-related. Since live commenting is computer-related, that's what they'd use.
That is always difficult. I have lost track of the amount of furniture I have abandonded in various places
i don’t want to kill this site’s ability to be read by IE7. i actually want to kill IE7.
eg. render it useless. make it kaput. no more. an ex-browser :)
then no library in the world could use it. {Comment #1151}
And then, unless you were prepared to pay for the labour to install a browser you liked on the computers in question, no public library would have internet access!
IE6 is slightly better than no browser at all...
I disagree.
:P
Why would you have to pay for labour? there are already people working in the libraries, tell them to do it...
They already have plenty to do.
It would take 2 mins per terminal, say the average library has 10 computers that's 20 mins, spread over a week thats 4 mins per day.
I am sure it wouldnt be too much trouble, unless there is a union involved
Good evening, anything happening?
In the uk that would be a big yes.
I don't really have anyone with enough space/goodwill to leave my stuff with though. It's not really an option. I might ask my landlord if I can have a rent reduction for the empty period.
You called my show magic on PitlaneFanatic. It is not magic rubbish, it is predictionining. Grr.
Derren Brown predicting after something has happened or actual predicting?
Sounds like magic
Would you prefer "soothsaying"?
It is not.
It's always difficult to find the best way to deal with things like that. You also want your own place available as soon as you get back.
Throw me words I haven't even heard of before dontcha.
Magic sounds better than predictionining.
I predict Alguersuari will win in Singapore (hey, this predictionining lark is easy)
Hrmmmmmm
Soothsayer n. a person supposed to be able to foresee the future
Keep digging :D
Yeah, I don't really want to sublet though unless someone like my sister wants it.
I think I've got a bite :-D
Types in filter '-Maverick'
In ancient Pompeii. And none of them saw what they had coming to them.
Oracle sounds so much better.
Ooh err
They did, but they didn't want to miss the show
I forgot the smilie
Titter ye not. (I'm not here by the way).
I preferred Ceefax
Anagrams of Flavio Briatore ... A Violator Fiber
Evening everyone how's it going?
Bare Oaf Vitriol
Slowly... But progressively
evening, i'm alright. Derren Brown just cured my headache... so that's good ;)
I am an idiot.
It doesn't work, but who cares?
A Bar Fool
Good news!
Even better news!
Evening. Seems to be going ridiculously quickly.
He gave me one when he appared on screen, i had to change channel
Evening Alex. Tis going in the right direction. Forwards.
Nick... the images that sentance presents.
:D
ooooops!
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/sidepod-android-png
working on the homepage... honest.
I thought he was stopping people from standing up
How is that homepage related???
it's the... android homepage?
Without wanting to get Mr C in trouble let me say I am only commenting while my Radio shows are being converted to MP3 :)
How do i get it!
Does that mean you're done?
So how many people have volunteered to appear on a live sidepodradio show tonight?
A headache!
maybe he got it wrong? i had such an awful headache i was thinking that i'd not be able to rest and get rid of it without taking something, then i sit and watch his film and it disappears... lol!
:P
Are they all finished?
There are live shows tonight?
Stop scaring people!
:D
One show is done... And uploading... I will meet the deadline of before Saturday comes!
He made me get up and want toast. Basically, he achieved in doing the EXACt opposite of what he was trying to do.
Kudos, Mr Brown.
Maybe your brain is just different to everyone else's. How did the driving lesson go today?
pretend your delegating ;)
#confidential
Woohoo!
There are live shows on Sunday but there is a special deal for people who volunteer tonight. I would recommend volunteering for the F1 phone in show.
It was very important to me :)
I could volunteer :)
Well done Alex!
I haven't volunteered
I thought you were not around on Sunday. You are most welcome to come on the show
Your application is accepted :)
You need a beta tester and its your fault i have the phone!
Why not?
He successfully sent me to sleep last week so it can't be that hard
I'm operating at gun point
agreed. at the moment all it does is say hello.
If he can predict the lottery why is he still doing more shows?
I love this application process. We are going to have a waiting list soon
I am willing to be said hello to :P
Get worried Steven Alison is doing your normal role ;)
the driving lesson went really well, it's been over a week since my last lesson, and the only problem came when a woman in front of me stalled as we were going round a corner and i had to think reaaaallly quickly. however we survived. and i seem to be coping better with everything even though i've had over a week off :)
I'm probably going to ring on Sunday.
Ooooh can you go on skype before the event and add Sidepodcast as a contact as we actually have to phone out.
Why does it take so long to predict the lottery? It's only 6 numbers, get on with it!
That is the plan. It is her show. I am just her sidekick on this one
:)
:( :( :(
Oh. My. God.
Sometimes having a break to think does more good than doing more lessons
Tis already on as a contact. I'll have a check tomorrow to make sure its all working properly.
I love all this volunteering.
Predict the euro millions. It's £85 million tonight
You can do it
Is it too late to enter?
In one sentence, Steven Roy re-establishes "volunteering others" normality
I have my tickets
I predict disappointment for Europeans in the millions
I haven't seeb the numbers that are giving me all that money yet
If there is a 6 in it, I'm scared
Well, I need to drag it out for an hour first, obviously we could start the program 2 minutes before the balls are drawn but that wouldn't do
Mav, did you get skype working?
No, it's being a **** in the ****
Hasnt it already been done an hour ago?
Uh-oh
No for some reason they insist on drawing it in the midde of the night.
I predict 6, 16, 30, 38, 41 lucky stars 2 and 4
They show it here late but they always say it was drawn earlier tonight in Paris
I saw a McLaren tonight
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/mclaren-under-wraps-jpg
I looked it up and it says online that the draw takes place at 23.35 and can be broadcast from that time. It also says you can still play while the dream numbers is closed.
oooh. me likey. new clothing range?
yeah, i found the same after my two week holiday. i'm much better at driving now too :) it's just gaining experience in the road now :)
Lewis & Heikki are launching the kids clothing range at the Westfield Centre at noon tomorrow
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/living-the-dream-jpg
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/launch-poster-jpg
The website is still showing last week's draw so it doesn't look like it has been drawn yet
I found that when I was an apprentice racing driver. After a day at school I would be struggling to go any faster. I would wake up in the morning and be a second a lap faster.
Cognitive fatigue
Don't tell Amy you know where Heikki is going to be. She will be on a plane in minutes.
No Aintree then Oulton Park
I was half tempted to make a trip down there tomorrow to get Heikki to sign something with "#Sorry Amy"
Nice :D
If you work in a library you can’t be expected to go all day without doohickeying {Comment #1160}
We were where I worked. I wonder if that's why my colleagues at another branch of the system rebelled against management in the last few weeks I was there (and the branch where I was at nearly did the same)?
You should. I wonder if you could get a video clip of Hekki saying Hi Amy or sorry Amy
Shame it'd be rammed and I'll still be snoring by noon
But why would you be locked down if you work there? {Comment #1163}
Because IT and libraries, in public libraries, are never the same department. The office politics derive from their employers, who are, ultimately, the government. As such, every department seems to be a bit precious about allowing people from other departments to improve stuff. The rigmorole involved in getting a broken mouse replaced was unbelievable...
I guess we get ask him at Spa when he's driving for someone else
Even more reason to apologise by then :)
Popped in the supermarket on my way home
They struggle with maths too, it seems
Buy Two Pay More
oh dear!
It's quiet here
Is everyone prepping for SPR?
Oh yeah, that's what I was going to do, thanks for reminding me
All done, just chilling out really.
am fiddling with links. someone is editing.
no. am watching the great amazing David Attenborough on Jonathon Ross :) plus my headache has come back...
I never seem to catch that live, seem to see the repeat late at night on Saturday for some reason
Why would you have to pay for labour? there are already people working in the libraries, tell them to do it… {Comment #1232}
We're not allowed because we're not professional IT people. Even though some of us are probably better at the IT stuff than the IT department if my experience is anything to go by.
The government is yet to be convinced that anyone except an MP could possibly be skilled at more than one thing at a time.
Well since I have nothing to prepare for I'm chillin' out.
What was your verdict on the podcast volumes?
Still on the list? ;)
yeah. not got there yet. how was "aside" different process again.
Fine
It's just F1 minute that is lower
i'm not telling you anymore until I get my badge ;)
hahahahahahha. noted.
Don't say that, they'll find something for you to do
No GP+, no badge
Oh no, maths!
The Off-Season
Oooh if you are at a loose end Sara have you considered perusing a subscription to GP+ it only costs 50 pence per issue and is absolutely fantastic: http://www.grandprixplus.com/
:D
Mr and Mrs C - do you have a muffin tray? And some cake cases?
now that's how you get a badge.
she gone to look...
Has everyone voted for Dank's other half in the pic vote?
He tweeted about it
Alex, are you interested in the next F1 lecture?
Oct 1st, Westminster
we did a load last night. can we vote daily?
Yes to tray, no to cake cases - but I am making a shopping list, so no probs.
Dunno, I noticed she had 60%+ of the vote and I thought... nice!
FIX!
And?
Hungarians?
What else do you call telling everyone to vote for her???
Was it here that all those Hungarian folk rigged a vote?
It was
More Steve Machett goodness
Italian GP Chalk Talk
Jonathan Ross will do that to you
That was quite funny - especially when they fessed up to it!
Robbed the Nurburgring though.
One of life's cruel ironies that he has an 'R' in his surname :D
It would take 2 mins per terminal, say the average library has 10 computers that’s 20 mins, spread over a week thats 4 mins per day.
I am sure it wouldnt be too much trouble, unless there is a union involved {Comment #1234}
We have trouble booting the computers in 2 minutes, let alone doing anything else on them at that speed.
Most of my colleagues didn't know how to install software and certainly don't know how to bypass the IT department's anti-tampering software to do it (bear in mind that there isn't even a Start button or a DOS prompt on the "public" computers).
At the start of my job at the last library I worked at, the documentation pertaining to employment that was supposed to be accessible at all times never appeared. I was told the problem was that nobody could be bothered to get round to converting the file format into one the intranet could use. After explaining to my boss how such a thing could be easily done in about an hour with free software already installed on the library computers (meaning IT simply needed to upload the finished file) and volunteering to do the task free, the boss said he'd make sure it was done if I wrote a letter explaining the matter (i.e. a formal project request). I did so... ...and six months later when I left, nothing had happened. Such is the speed at which things are not done in the libraries I'm familiar with.
All the council's libraries would have to be upgraded simultaneously and they'd also need the correct front-ends reconfigured to function with the new underlying browser and applied at the same time. That is a lot of hours of work before even one computer could have the installation done, and then the system would need to be taken down in a quiet day... ...when, if we were lucky, one staff member to two computers could just about get the job done.
That's not the work of a moment or a penny!
What are the odds on Mr C knowing what a muffin tray is?
What's a muffin tray anyway?
This is a new twist?
i was only watching it for Attenborough... that guy is awesome! am not a big fan of jonathon ross tbh.
A tray for muffins
*shrugs*
If we can, can someone re-post the link?
I shall certainly take a looksee.
And is a muffin tray a tray with muffins?
Euromillions went very badly. Not a single number
That would depend on what you define a muffin as I guess...
like a cupcake tray but deeper... so you can make larger cakes... well muffins...
It has deep hollows in it so you can cook good muffins
They drew it? I'm so confused!
That's easy if you are an expert
It was just on TV.
http://bit.ly/DaMza
Thank you - that video cured my insomnia! ;)
I am in theory however... I think I am going to see Stirling Moss Interviewed by Murray Walker that evening!
With such a descrption it sounds like it would be a miricle if the computers could find google, i think expecting people to use them for live commenting might be a bit much!
I didnt realise you worked in a library though... do you stock books with missing first pages?
I make fantastic muffins
Mac miraculously redicted the right numbers
Though I do like the canary wharf one
I did the right thing though
Mav not Mac
It's not at the same place is it cos that'd be silly timing to have two F1 things in London on the same evening
And I didn't need to drag it out for an hour, Derren Brown eat your heart out
mmmm .... muffins!
I think it may well be the same evening... booo!
I predicted the right numbers! Unfortunately, in order to maintain the BBC's right to transmit the results first, I couldn't tell you my predictions until now....
I know a muffin top when I see one, but I guess that's not as pleasant
Now, that's an English Muffin isn't it?
Not a muffin as in Blueberry
That means you haven't won.
Kat has 43% of the vote with whoever took the pic of the kid on the bike on 35%
What'll really spook you out is when Alguersuari wins in Singapore
I thought it was Lady Laney?
Thanks Andy. I was confused.
I let my BIL know but he wont be in London until the night after. Any chance you can have a word and postpone it so he and Alex can go? (he didn't reply that he wasn't interested, only that he wouldn't get there in time, but I suspect he doesn't care).
I am easily confused.
That bike pic is stunning though...
I voted for both
Jeremy: Success at the Apple Store
Swapped my bad dock for the more expensive one!
blueberry muffins! nom nom nom!
Awesome work! Did you have to fight hard, or can you know tell everyone how awesome we are at customer service?
Nice, but not big enough ;)
Dont forget tomorrow is "Talk like a pirate day"... Arrr

We should calm down, there are 30 mins before it is the right day... ;)
Fair well yer lilly-livered bilge rat

Why are pirate jokes better than other jokes?
They just arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh
I've come to suck your blood (in vampire voice) can still get a run then?
Sunday can't come quick enough.
Noooo Saturday is never the right day! It's almost as bad as Thursday!!
Not for us non-retail folk
[Sorry Alison & Lukeh]

It went down the road and turned into a field...
For the love of Timo, please STOP!!!

Have you all swallowed really bad joke books?
See ya Jeremy

Oooh ...tough crowd!
I was wondering this but I get that feeling quite a lot around here, I thought I'd let it pass.....
Get off the stage.
I am so glad we don't have a phone in joke show on Sunday
:)
It's quite normal
For here, anyway
Renault.
:D
Oh I assumed we were all posting really bad jokes.
That's what you think!
:D
We could cut back on sidepodsp..
Actually, what a rubbish idea, dont say anything RG, say nothing more. You've heard the jokes, they are bad.
:D
ET phone home...
What's ET short for?
He's only got little legs.
What's red & invisible?
No tomatoes
Shut, him, up.

good evening
woot! me too, i ordered last night on a whim. should be fun
Couldn't get worse could it?
Think of it as practice for Uni
How? I'm still reading a lot of awfulsomeness.
I have to be doing "Theoretical Design and Pit Crew Technology" at 9am the following morning, so i'll stick to my cokes and ciders ;)
I can't believe I would be upset to be at a talk by Stirling Moss and Murray Walker :(
Alex, are you free tomorrow afternoon to get Heikki to write #Sorry Amy at the Westfield Shopping gig?
Is Marx's tomb a communist plot?
Sounds like a Brawnsome hangover subject
I'm committed to too much SPC stuff to make that happen sadly :(
And it's my first one with those people...
Start as you mean to go on ;)
Who's been eating chips in Belgium?
http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/18092009-003
Why do all communists drink herbal tea?
Because Proper-tea is theft
How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?
None, its a hardware problem
As Amy would say, it's not how it works!
:D
I can't tell what Im crying from, the poorness of the joke, or the poorness of the singer on Jools Holland
How many feminists does it take to change a light bulb?
I really can't answer that here :(
Maybe I should tweet it
Who is it?
With such a descrption it sounds like it would be a miricle if the computers could find google, i think expecting people to use them for live commenting might be a bit much! {Comment #1409}
The machines can find search engines of all kinds extremely easily when set up (as in, it's a one-click job from the front end's main menu). They're so much effort to change because they need to be completely foolproof for the general public to use. Live commenting wouldn't present a problem either, apart from the browser compatibility issue.
It's a bit like a swan - looks really elegant and effortless from the lakeside, but it's really lots of frantic paddling underwater.
I belive they were amy's belgian chips in melbourne!
I'm glad you say this now and not 5 minutes ago... :P
She's very good! I've no idea who she is but I like it.
Florence and the Machines.
Feels more the Machine and the Machines.
Nick?
But Florence + The Machine are splendid
Not seen them live though
I would love to unfortunalty i am off to the countray soide
I think they are awful. But my opinion.
Great album too
Top 10 of the year, for sure ;)
I was about to say "if the next words out your mouth are 'florrance' 'and' or 'the machine' then i will beat you" ;)
Can't you insult The Gossip who are on now? They are absolutely dire!!
Fair enough
You like PCs, Badoer & Spurs
We know the score ;)
Albums good, but I use to like Sleeper, and they were rubbish live too.
I didn't say I liked Badoer, just that he shoulda been in F1. That opinion changed after FP1 of Valencia
And I just don't like apple, not like PCs.
Spurs, well, they're great.
I [heart] Louise Wener
Were great at Glasto, '95 I think
One song and they think they're Anne Diamond (Sort of Paul Calf rip off quote)
Don't dis Florence and the Machine! they are amazing! Drumming song is great too... she's just not amazing live, she'll get better :) she is reasonably new.
Yes. Yes and yes. If Florence and the Machines are bad, then she is catastrophically abysmal in the shame of the world.
Ah, forgot to watch. Will do tomorrow.
So your saying the best song they do is one where she dosent sing? this makes lots of sense :D
haha i agree... the gossip aren't doing too well :)
Beth Ditto reminds me of Flavio
*cries into an asylum* :(
Love Sleeper
Well I've put on Whocast or something to listen to and after the jazzy intro music I was greeted by an aussie accent which wasn't what I expected.
And I like The Gossip.
she sings in drumming song.... that's what she sang a few minutes ago...
Hymn to Her was a great cover
[Vegas B-side I think]
:)
Since when was shouting in a song, good?
Favourite song was Nice Guy Eddie
I know Jules Holland is much respected and much loved, but i really cant stand the guy, he drives me nuts.
1st album was the best for me
Err... Lulu?
Since Never Mind The B*ll*cks
Never did get any singles, but I was never a singles buyer
Can you name one of their songs?
And it can't be Standing In The Way Of Control! :)
Case closed :D
Mine too!
I have hundreds
It was an addiction before I bought property and became officially skint for many years
Biffy Clyro before they turned bland
I didnt realise you worked in a library though… do you stock books with missing first pages? {Comment #1409}
I used to work in several libraries until the work dried up. I've been trying to become a professional librarian since I was 14, but it looks like I'll have to settle for admin work...
None of the library services I've worked in have a copy of your book, but if someone asked for it, it would be bought in and made available for borrowing. Why not go to your local library and start the ball rolling by asking to reserve a copy of your own book?
1st ok. 2nd genius. 3rd meh.
Although I have a feeling I might like the 3rd if I heard it again, but I gave it to my sister a looong time ago
Delicious
You can do a degree in it you know.... My mum did.
1 & 2 reversed for me
Rage Against The Machine
Shouting is obligatory
I love florence and the machine in case this is any help to anyone :)
I loved working in the library.
Heeeeeeeeehehehehehe.
Oh you just know what song comes to mind.
Rage are fab though.
Alex, when is Drugstore's album out?
Lukeh, you should seek out Lounge Against The Machine by Richard Cheese
Agreed!
If I go quiet, firstly, that's good for you lot. secondly i'm doing shownotes for next podcast.
Gahhrrr! It be Pirate Day Me hartyes!
yay! ♥
Is that like a jazz version of their songs? I'm sure I've heard it befote if its what 'I'm thinking off, very clever!
Only one rage track [guerilla radio] but he's a genius
Gimme a sec
YAY! They're back!!
You can do a degree in it you know…. My mum did. {Comment #1577}
I did a degree in it. That, and an employer which didn't understand or care about its basic legal obligations, was my downfall :(
Gosh! Why can't you get a job then? How awful!
Gosh! Why can’t you get a job then? How awful!
Halfway through the degree, the entry requirements for the profession changed so that anyone with five good GCSEs could become a librarian (until then it was a degree profession). Of course, this meant that by the time I graduated, people had five more years of working experience than me. Also, "transferable skills" were in vogue, so employers didn't care whether the work was in libraries or not; they simply thought any work was better than having spent five years studying the subject. If I'd worked in a shop or as a cleaner or something full-time after leaving secondary school instead of doing sixth form and university, I'd probably have been a librarian continuously for the past three years.
The one employer that did a practical test to see how good people were at actual library stuff before recruiting worked out I was considerably better than the people who hadn't studied librarianship prior to applying. They took me on and then did a lot of stuff that was illegal because the staff were uncomfortable with anyone who:
a) didn't live within walking distance of the library
b) could solve problems instead of just moaning about them
c) cared about the job more than the office politics
d) thought such things as discrimination laws and customer service were for applying not just paying lip service to
e) didn't think exactly like them
f) had a brain and used it
Being in all six categories, it was inevitable there'd be differences of opinion. What wasn't inevitable was the unremitting bullying I received from the staff, actively encouraged by their bosses (and this turned out to be the case at least three levels up the hierarchy).
The council consistently blamed me for its failings and eventually dismissed me. It claimed "irrational behaviour" - the "irrational" part being me attempting to serve customers instead of listening to other staff members bullying me and then attempting to calm them down when they threatened and verbally attacked me. The dismissal came in the middle of a review which was conducted in a way clearly breaching my contract and my appeal letter was ignored. The person who dismissed me admitted the council would also lie on my reference, which meant that legally I couldn't refer any future employer to them. The only reason it hasn't gone to court is because I can't afford it, which I probably could if the council would pay me the £1000 or so it still owes me in salary.
The other councils, not being able to get a "most recent employer" reference, have since refused to interview me, even though this goes against their recruitment policies. Hopefully now that I have the one-day-per-week voluntary work as a receptionist to fall back on, councils may start considering me again, but I'm not hopeful.
Sorry if that rambled/ranted on a bit. I may have got slightly carried away...
No, not at all. I'm really interested! My mum was a librarian for 15 years. That is really awful. I hate companies that force you stand up and be the shining example or combat their racist attitudes.
I'm not saying the racism is the problem there specifically by the way.... I've had bad problems in the past trying to combat discriminatory recruitment practices somewhere I've worked.
Alison, be careful what you say here - retail companies have been known to fire people for what they write on the web :(
I don't work there anymore. Nor have I told you where it was. But thanks, it's good advice.

That aspect surprised me. Given that they made 400 people redundant a couple of weeks after dismissing me and also had to put down a rebellion in another branch library shortly beforehand, the council clearly needed to change. They just never worked it out however many times or however many people told them!
Then you should be fine then ;)
If it affects your future that much, then you should be spending every last penny on your fight to clear your name...
Small claims court?

I see. In this case, racism is the one thing the council in question refrained from doing - there was a Polish recruit brought in and he got a lot more respect than I did (despite being the other member of the branch to commit the "sin" of being competent). Proximity to library was the geographic restriction, not nationality
Employment tribunal?

I got quotes and it was made clear that "every last penny" I had wouldn't cover the costs of getting the court case fought unless I also had the £1000 under dispute. Whether this is another example of discrimination or simply a reflection of the cost of going to court is unclear. Catch-22.
Alia, have you been to your local Law Advice Centre? They should be able to at least give you some good advice for free and one of them might give you ongoing advice if they take an interest in the case.

Even more expensive than small claims (due to the length of time I was there being less than a full year, I'd have to go to a standard court and sue under common law rather than use the tribunal proper).
Have you thought about doing something else, like teaching maybe. Go back to Uni for a post-grad course or is it only librarianship you want?
I think the first step is to go to a small claims court for your unpaid wages. That should be pretty straightforward! There aren't really two sides to that. They owe you money, they have to give it to you.... I doubt they'd even bother showing up at court.

Can't even get an appointment with them - their phone line is inaccessible to me and their offices never appear to be open!
The CILIP advisory phone line turned out to be garbled to the point of inaccessibility too. It's frustrating that the system supposed to help this sort of problem turns out to be yet another set of obstacles :(
Have you tried the CAB?
If nothing else, they're probably able to get into direct contact with the Law Advice Centre on your behalf.

I've thought of teaching, but Dad (who did it at college level for several years) is highly against it because he thinks I wouldn't be able to deal with the less-manageable students. Although I have a basic adult teaching qualification (and a First Aid Instructor qualification), there seems little point in getting further qualifications in the area unless I have some chance of being able to do work in the sector afterwards. Especially since it took the best part of two years to get the Student Loans Company to stop trying to take me to court due to their inability to calculate loan/grant entitlement correctly last time...
I'm currently on the path to getting qualified for admin work because that appears to be the one other area of work where I actually stand a chance of being able to do the job at the end of studying (disabilities can be a real inconvenience sometimes). I still want to be a librarian but I suspect whether I can be one again is largely out of my hands.

Apart from the bit where the lawyers want almost as much money than is being claimed to allow me to do that step in the first place. Hence the bit where I said in #1609 where I said the tribunal was even more expensive than the small claims court...
You won't need a lawyer! It's the same as something like reclaiming bank charges.....

Can't even find the local branch despite an intense search for it, which doesn't bode well. I'd probably be able to get an appointment but would never be able to attend it!

You honestly don't need a lawyer to use the small claims court. As long as you're claiming under £5000 there's enough information on their site to let you prepare yourself. Most of the evidence is submitted in a written form so it's not so daunting. As I said, they'll most likely pay up if they're issued with a summons.

Not according to anyone I've talked to about this before. If they were all wrong, I will be pretty upset because the incident happened back in January and I'm not sure if the case is considered "in time" any more...

Oops, link fail
Just seen Alison pointed you in the right direction already
I'm pretty sure it is, but I don't know specifically. I'd really look into it. It only costs £30 to file a claim.... (At least it did last year, it might have gone up a little since then....)
In fact the court doesn't charge a fee if you're on JSA?

Thank you for the information. I wish the site wouldn't refer me to leaflets that don't appear to exist, but at least there's a start here.
This leaflet is the best for initial info I think http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/ex301.pdf
I had to refresh the page to get it to load, but I got it after that.

I have that one loaded, but then it referred me to Leaflet 23, which doesn't exist (according to the site).
Alia, I don't know if you're still up, I found leaflet 23 http://www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk/en/legalhelp/leaflet23_5.jsp
That's a really good site generally for looking up information.

Thank you very much, Alison - you've been a lot of help to me :)
It's no problem at all. Some things really aren't set up to help people use them....
