It really was a slow news day yesterday, with just a glimpse of testing in Bahrain to keep us entertained. Let's hope for more today, but until then, here's what we've found to talk about:

  • KERS took another hit today, with Ferrari having a three hour delay in their testing programme to sort out a cooling problem. Williams also emerged and suggested they wouldn't run their flywheel device in Australia. If they won't, who will?
  • Organisers of the Singapore GP are holding a competition for winners to name three of the corners at the revised circuit this year. Now, we already did this sort of thing during the 2008 season, so would consider ourselves experts, but apparently the suggestions should be "punchy, have a strong local connection and are easy to pronounce." I'll have a think.
  • Also, don't forget that there's a 1986 Batracer game just waiting to kick off. We've had a few more joinees, but need a couple more people to sign up. If you enjoyed the last game, or missed out on that one and would like to have a go, sign up to Batracer now. The password is Bourdais, and there's lots of information on the wiki.

That'll do it for now. Fingers crossed we see the drivers in Bahrain packing in the laps again, so we can have plenty to talk about, and pictures to ogle. Until then, I'll see you in the comments.

Apropos of nothing really but I stopped at a Shell petrol station tonight and they have an offer on for some Ferrari Key Rings.

Small range of miniature metallic Ferraris, F1 & road cars - classic & contemporary. £1 with a certain quantity of premium unleaded or diesel

Ferrari fans may wish to check it out, they looked decent enough [ in the picture :) ]

  • Steven Roy18/02/2009 at 01:03

but didn’t Virgin say it was unlikely?…

Virgin put out a non-denial denial the same as Peter Windsor gave Stuart but we all believe that team is going to happen.

"Tweeting (or whatever the verb is!) from 33,000 feet; thanks Virgin America!"

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 01:07

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 01:10

I thought you werent allowed anything of the sort 33,000 feet in the air…

I think some airlines are starting to allow some mobile usage (on their sub-network) and pay-as-you-go internet has been available for a few years now at a very high cost

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 01:10

    [cynical Clapper that I am]

    (unless it is true)

Which is true. Virgin are the only airline to be really advertising on UK TV at the moment. It's there anniversary, or something. But knowing a little about how Branson works, he will be interested in any publicitiy right now. Even if it is false. He maybe going for it, he not be. But it's interesting nonetheless. :)

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 01:11

if you own the airline… rules don’t matter

But... even if you own the airline, the pilot is STILL in charge of that flight

(though may be jobless on landing :D )

  • Ollie18/02/2009 at 01:13

He maybe going for it, he *may* not be.

Also, Branson is a entrepreneur. Like Mallya, he's interested in picking something up cheap, turning it around (either down to skill, general resources available or luck) and then selling it on to make a profit. I wouldn't be surprised if he is gong for HondaF1.

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 01:13

But knowing a little about how Branson works, he will be interested in any publicitiy right now. Even if it is false. He maybe going for it, he not be. But it’s interesting nonetheless.

Knowing him, he's probably gonna get in the bloody car. :P

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 01:14

I think Virgin F1 (oh please no!) could out do Red Bull in the publicity stakes

[grid girls may be eye catching though]

Do we need another Red & White car on the grid?

  • RG18/02/2009 at 01:37

Do we need another Red & White car on the grid?

Anything with white on I will slate, I don't care if its BMW either, white=unimaginative. We need more Toro Rosso's and Red Bull's on the grid. Force India should have gold and red, Williams entirely dark blue, Toyota, we'll let them off as you can always have the boring team have the boring colours.

  • Ollie18/02/2009 at 01:38

Do we need another Red & White car on the grid?

It depends. Is it gonna be shaped like Ms. Anderson and have a purdy lady painted on the side?

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 01:39

no, not really, the whole honda thing has been covered in smoke and wrapped in cotton wool in my mind. i mean it's not sunk in. it will if they don't make it, or when there is a name. But atm i'm just worried for them all.

Am getting very concerned about what I may be supporting this year, though…

support Jenson? even if you don't like the team... if Ross is there... and Jenson, it may still be similar. it will still be at Brackley.

  • RG18/02/2009 at 01:40

Adrian Reynard built up a race car construction business from scratch to dominate F3 F3000 CART etc. He was also the tech director at BAR originally. He is a very good designer and if he is involved he will want total charge of the tech side if not the team prrincipal's job since he and Craig Pollock shared that originally at BAR and that is what caused the majority of their early problems. There was not one person in charge.

I don't like all this relying on Ross stuff. I'm doing a bit too but god, there's plenty other capable people around. He wasn't the sole guy responsible for Benneton or Ferrari's revival, and he won't be if these guys get awesome. Remember 2004, 2005 and 2006? He wasn't at BAR/Honda.

  • Journeyer18/02/2009 at 02:21

But out of the ENTIRE team, only Ross has won a title, never mind multiple titles. The others may have potential, yes, but Ross will need to unlock that kind of performance throughout the team, so it still goes back to him.

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 02:21

I may not be popular for this but Honda only did so well when Ferrari & McLaren were doing so badly

Jenson's win in Hungary was a gift of the weather wasn't it?

  • Journeyer18/02/2009 at 02:23

Jenson’s win in Hungary was a gift of the weather wasn’t it?

Well, a bit, but still, Jenson was on the pace all race, and his pace went up after Alonso went out and Schumi faltered.

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 02:24

Jenson’s win in Hungary was a gift of the weather wasn’t it?

    Yes and No.

He started 14th. You can't just be gifted a lucky race win from that position...

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 02:24

I like Jenson, I thought he was one to watch when he first started in F1 but I'm not convinced of his 'greatness'

  • Joe18/02/2009 at 02:24

I'm just fed up of hearing Ross Ross Ross all the time. If the team improve though with him there, then fair enough. It's like hearing a song you like on the radio constantly, gets tiring.

  • lou18/02/2009 at 02:28

I don’t like all this relying on Ross stuff. I’m doing a bit too but god, there’s plenty other capable people around. He wasn’t the sole guy responsible for Benneton or Ferrari’s revival, and he won’t be if these guys get awesome. Remember 2004, 2005 and 2006? He wasn’t at BAR/Honda.

but without Ross we have a team lead by Nick Fry...

  • Joe18/02/2009 at 02:29

Thing is, I LIKE Nick Fry. Him > Bruno Senna.

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 02:29

I’m just fed up of hearing Ross Ross Ross all the time. If the team improve though with him there, then fair enough. It’s like hearing a song you like on the radio constantly, gets tiring.

He knows how to be in charge, basically. That's what Honda need.

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 02:30

but without Ross we have a team lead by Nick Fry…

    True :(

  • lou18/02/2009 at 02:30

I like Jenson, I thought he was one to watch when he first started in F1 but I’m not convinced of his ‘greatness’

i'd like any of the recent f1 champions show their greatness in the RA107 or RA108.....

  • lou18/02/2009 at 02:31

i’d like to see any of the recent f1 champions show their greatness in the RA107 or RA108…..

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 02:31

I like Jenson, I thought he was one to watch when he first started in F1 but I’m not convinced of his ‘greatness’

Problem is, he's never really been in the right place at the right time to prove exactly what he's capable of.

His big year should have been 2007. That was when he was driving at his best...

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 02:31

i’d like any of the recent f1 champions show their greatness in the RA107 or RA108…..

    They wouldn't :D

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 02:34

Problem is, he’s never really been in the right place at the right time to prove exactly what he’s capable of.

That's Jenson's own fault there and I've not a lot of sympathy on that one

  • lou18/02/2009 at 02:35

    They wouldn’t

exactly :) put jenson in a good race winning car and then and only then judge his full greatness :)

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 02:35

    Shoulda stayed at Renault (Benetton)

  • Joe18/02/2009 at 02:36

Oh and I forgot to mention though I know it's been done, imagine if Sato came back. One of the greatest escapes ever. I'm all for it, go Sato!

I'm going now. I don't comment much at all, but I did a bit tonight and really enjoyed it, damn you tiredness! I leave you guys with the greatest Sato picture. Ever. Night guys.

  • lou18/02/2009 at 02:36

That’s Jenson’s own fault there and I’ve not a lot of sympathy on that one

i've said it before. Jenson didn't build the rubbish cars, he just drives them. Hardly his fault if by signing a contract he didn't mystically see into the future and realise the awful cars he would be given ;)

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 02:37

    Shoulda stayed at Renault (Benetton)

It's easy to say that now...

  • Steven Roy18/02/2009 at 02:37

It wasn't his choice to go. He was fired to make way for Alonso and the British press slagged of Flav for doing it.

I do think that Sato doesn’t deserve a job if Ruben’s is out on his ear too

now that i do agree with. i have been checking for news on Rubens for ages now. he seems to have disappeared. it seems unfair that this is the way that his career might end, just disappearing quietly.

  • Dom18/02/2009 at 02:41

Yeah, was it Trulli & Alonso 1st? Or Fisi

Trulli until 2004 when he fell out with Renault.

even though brawn has desires to own a slice?

  • Steven Roy18/02/2009 at 03:12

    Branson. No contest.

If Branson buys they have saved face and have no further financial commitment to the team. Fry can't afford to run the team for more than four races and then is going to be left with a factory to de-commision etc. Honda cannot claim to have sold it to him if they know he can only keep it running for a few weeks.

  • Bassano Clapper18/02/2009 at 03:13

Honda are probably legally obligated to make sure they can last more than 4 races under UK/EU employment law

  • me18/02/2009 at 03:15

do ya think can we convince branson to send bernie into space?

  • Steven Roy18/02/2009 at 03:15

Imagine how it would look in Japan if they sold to Fry knowing he could not meet the contract obligations to the staff, suppliers or anyone else. They would lose a lot of face and to a court it would look like they were trying to unload a problem cheaply.

Branson is a McLaren and Fry is a 1986 Osella.

Mateschitz reckons the teams should own all of F1.

    http://tinyurl.com/weownf1

(translated from a story found from the source of some GMM nonsense)

How could that possibly work? Nothing would ever get done!

He also says F1 is in a worrying phase because there are two types of teams: private owners with no passion, only interested in profit, and manufacturer teams who, along with their banking sponsors, are suffering at the hands of the economic climate.

He sounds like he's putting himself in the first group - those with "neither the expertise nor passion towards motorsport." You don't wanna go around saying that, do you?

  • Journeyer18/02/2009 at 09:57

He sounds like he’s putting himself in the first group - those with “neither the expertise nor passion towards motorsport.” You don’t wanna go around saying that, do you?

I think his subtle message is, "I'm the only one who's neither! The others around me need help!"

Mind you, I still wouldn't say that in a paddock with Ron and Patrick and Frank in it - that's a bit of an insult to them.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)18/02/2009 at 09:58

What about FOTA? Max and Bernie have been running F1 for years with the knowledge that the teams never agree.

Mind you, I still wouldn’t say that in a paddock with Ron and Patrick and Frank in it - that’s a bit of an insult to them.

He also says F1 is in a worrying phase because there are two types of teams: private owners with no passion, only interested in profit, and manufacturer teams who, along with their banking sponsors, are suffering at the hands of the economic climate.

He did not say that at all.

F1 Iis at the moment in a critical phase. A private Equity Company as 'owner', which has neither expertise nor passion for motorsport, but whose engagement - that's in its nature - just is in financial profit maximisation; car manufacturers, who are stuck in a world economy crisis, sponsors like banks and others who aren't less affected or cigarrete firms which suffer more and more under the advertising ban. All of that contributes to the current instability

I think GMM use babelfish, even for English sources. They translate it into Russian or whatever they feel like that day and then back again - they then cannot be held responsible for misquotes.

  • Kathi18/02/2009 at 11:04

Actually, that's not Google's fault. That is what the translation said, I just misinterpreted it. Apologies.

  • Christine18/02/2009 at 11:14

Here's another bit of news - in English this time. Senna isn't worried about entering F1 with no testing.

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73335

"It would certainly be a big challenge: I think no driver in the last few years has had his F1 debut with so little testing mileage. However, it's always better to be in F1, even under difficult conditions, than to be out of it. To race in GP2 for another season would have been useless for me."

That's two good excuses for not doing well - I'm in a Honda, and I had no testing :)

This the ITV guide? In fact, why are ITV still producing a guide on F1 anyway?

For some bizarre reason, my mum bought me the '08 edition for 99p from some bargain-basement book shop. It was one of those "Oh you shouldn't have!" moments (no really, you shouldn't have!)

They got the German and European GP circuits mixed up. Amateurs!

No, independent. It is a 2009 edition for £3 (rrp £12.99) from possibly the same bargain bookshop so I shouldn't complain too much. It's okay, except in all the circuit diagrams their car is short of a 7th gear.

Here’s another bit of news - in English this time. Senna isn’t worried about entering F1 with no testing.

If there's one thing we know about him, it's that he learns very quickly.

  • Kathi18/02/2009 at 11:36

    interviewer: What do you suggest?

My position is quite clear on this: The teams are the ones who carry the entire F1 and also the financial risk. They are the ones that have not only the necessary expertise, but also the corresponding passion for motorsports. There is for me, therefore, only a logical and morally acceptable partner for F1 - and those are the teams. Only in this way would the existence of F1 in the longterm be secured, if the teams would not only make profit [he expressed that much more sophisticated] of their marketing value, but also owned those assets. One of the team jointly developed takeover bid would be a logical next step.

    Silverstone reveals new MotoGP layout

This looks a lot like the 2002 proposal for the F1 circuit. If this is the best they could do to change the circuit (by just rerouting using existing circuits) then they deserved to lose the F1 :-(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)18/02/2009 at 12:37

Perhaps they could have done better if they knew they had secured F1?

Or perhaps Bernie knew they couldn't and that's why he gave it to Donington?

Given the choice, I'd take the new Donington over the new Silverstone any day.

She came home and said…I’m not sure that the door colour and the walls go together. We should repaint and replace the doors…

Happens on Grand Designs, too: you know, it's taken 18 months of complex negotiations for them to get planning permission to turn their Grade 2 listed (but largely decomposed) medieval church into a house; the building has been gutted and repointed and the internal layout framed in wood beams; then in walks the wife:-

"Hmm. The kitchen's going to be too small."

So Petrobras intrested in coming back into the future, obvious then they can’t with the current economic climate, or don’t wanna support Honda/Virgin/X

Said the opposite yesterday. Seems to be tied up with the number of engine suppliers and the close tie-in they have with fuel companies to get the best out of them. Loss of the Honda engine has basically left Petrobras with nobody to sponsor as the Merc engine will be Mobil fuelled.

  • Steven Roy18/02/2009 at 16:38

Petrobras yesterday said that they wanted the association with Hinda as much as the advertising value of the sponsorship. With their withdrawal all that was left was the bare sponsorship deal and that was not enough.

Patrick's apparent willingness to use her gender to her advantage in gaining sponsors and media attention has riled the establishment.

  • Steven Roy18/02/2009 at 17:06

good article, is there any point wading into that conversation though?

I thought about it until I scanned the comments. One thinks she is a NASCAR driver another thinks that what will save F1 is becoming greener. It seems to have escaped their attention that Honda were the greenest team in F1 and after investing billions in it they are struggling to flog the team for a dollar.

"Honda Racing CEO Nick Fry believes Formula 1 should concentrate on enticing more car manufacturers into the sport rather than filling up the grid with independent teams."

Nick Fry - what a moron.

Good stuff - If this is all true, then I'm curious to which Virgin brand they'll sponser with (I assume advertising the group as a whole isnt particularly useful). Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays are international so might be the main ones, but other possibilities are:

Virgin Galactic - related to F1's Hi-Techness perhaps?

Virgin Media - fast (50mb) broadband and fast cars?

Virgin Green Fund - continuation of Hondas enviromental awareness?

e-mail it to Branson. He will probably end up paying an agency £200k to do that.

    agreed. it's beautifully subtle.

  • Maverick18/02/2009 at 18:59

I assume advertising the group as a whole isnt particularly useful

I don't know, it is a strong brand name in itself and they could rotate through a few since it wouldn't change the overall livery all that much.

Virgin Trains would be the one that would worry me (is it still in Branson ownership?) - I can only picture the announcements of delays whilst they await a replacement driver.

Send it to the Virgin Group head office. He has a habit of giving jobs to people who approach him with ideas. Virgin Radio existed because John somethingorother contacted him and said he should set up a radio station that fed music into his stores. So Branson hired him and told him to set it up and evetually it became Virgin Radio which was sold for £x million.

  • lou18/02/2009 at 19:20

  • Alianora La Canta18/02/2009 at 21:09

No sponsor on Piquet Jr's helmet

no "crease" in side of monocoque

    engineer's glove stetches further

more precise tip on rear of camera

lion on engine cover appears to be pouting

  • Alianora La Canta18/02/2009 at 21:10

Oh no - I think I found #6. There's a small metallic protuberance on the left side of the monocoque that's a different shape on each picture.

  • Alianora La Canta18/02/2009 at 21:12

Sounds like #7 is a dot of some sort, according to the chat.

#8 is a shadow that moves position on the left wing mirror.

Has anybody actually counted the differences between those two pictures?

  • RG18/02/2009 at 21:13

Has anybody actually counted the differences between those two pictures?

    There is only five y'know

  • Alianora La Canta18/02/2009 at 21:13

#7 is confirmed as the dot (or small brown smudge as far as I can tell) that appears on the steering wheel.

  • me18/02/2009 at 21:14

Has anybody actually counted the differences between those two pictures?

there's five. you might be seeing the jpg compression differences. see here:

Maybe it's just as well I'm not playing then, since it looks like a lot more than five differences on my monitor.

  • Christine18/02/2009 at 21:15

  • Alianora La Canta18/02/2009 at 21:22

    there’s five. you might be seeing the jpg compression differences. {Comment #373}

Now I see the problem. It's taken out three of the differences I saw.

The list now appears to be:

no “crease” in side of monocoque

more precise tip on rear of camera

the engineer now doesn't appear to have gloves in either, but there's still a dot present on the right one that isn't on the left

small metallic protuberance on the left side of the monocoque that’s a different shape on each picture

dot (or small brown smudge as far as I can tell) that appears on the steering wheel

Hence why I don't like spot the difference much - the differences I spot never seem to be the ones people are looking for :(

  • Alianora La Canta18/02/2009 at 21:24

    I thought we agreed no cheating/helping this week? No fair! {Comment #375}
