We all stayed up late last night recording the fourth edition of Sidepodpanel. We managed to welcome in the new day and say Happy Birthday to Scott as the clock struck midnight. However, it's now Monday, and things are kicking off in the F1 world once again.

Things up for discussion today:

  • Canada is officially off the calendar. The Montreal mayor says they tried everything but Bernie's demands are unreasonable.
  • Testing in Barcelona gets underway today, keep your eyes on the news for any info and/or pictures. We'd especially like updates in drop.io if you find anything.
  • Brundle confirms BBC role in 2009

In non-F1 news:

  • The space shuttle is... still going.
  • The possibility of a live Sidepodpanel at Autosport.
  • Was Genesis better before or after Peter Gabriel?

The lists will expand throughout the day, so don't feel constrained by what I have mentioned here. Feel free to discuss anything that's on your mind, and we'll catch up with you in the comments.

175 million for a 5 year contract does seem absolutly bonkers. I can not see 150 000 people spending the amount of money need for the government to get it money back in the form of sales taxes and want not.

And there is so little overhead for this Grand Prix compared to others that you would think that Canada would be the last GP not to turn a profit.

Makes you wonder. Give Bernie 35 million and you can have a race anywhere you want. Then you can have a race to completely empty grandstands because no one in your contry can afford the ticket prices.

France, Canada, and China's on the ropes, who is next?

Barca testing - I am very excited with the prospect of seeing the way teams have tackled the new regs.

Toyota's Pascal Vasselon response to a formula1.com question:

Q: Is there more anticipation than usual to see which solutions are adopted by other teams?

PV: We are all looking forward to seeing what the new cars look like because all teams have been working without references to the others... Within what is left we should be able to see very different solutions.

I agree that the new cars will look 'cleaner', but I don't think we are ever going to see gorgeous racecars like the Lotus 49 again. Then again, we are never going to be going that slow again, either. I wonder how history will remember these new cars?

Perhaps someone would give their thoughts on how history will remember the grooved tyres/mad flickups era racecars.

  • Journeyer17/11/2008 at 04:35

I'm a bit late on this one, but hey, it'll be the first one in this thread:

    Happy Birthday, Scott!

    Now, on to business:

France, Canada, and China’s on the ropes, who is next?

    Britain, Belgium, Germany, Australia, Malaysia

Some deserve to be on this list more than others. In particular, France, China, and Malaysia have had poor ticket sales.

But on the other hand, why aren't other not-so-worthy nations on this list? Keep Britain, Belgium, Germany, and Australia. Drop Bahrain (since we'll get Abu Dhabi anyway; at least that looks better), Barcelona (yes, Valencia's horrid, but at least there's some scenery, not to mention it's not a test track), and most of all, that old school version of a horrible track that is Hungary.

I agree that the new cars will look ‘cleaner’, but I don’t think we are ever going to see gorgeous racecars like the Lotus 49 again. Then again, we are never going to be going that slow again, either. I wonder how history will remember these new cars?

The definition of a gorgeous racecar is always relative, Dave. I think you'd have the same definition with Clive of F1Insight of a beautiful racecar. Other fans like the 1980s McLarens. Even other fans (like me) love the Williams and Benetton designs of the early 1990s, as well as the F2002.

It all depends on one's perspective. I'm sure others love the more recent 2006-2008 cars, and others still will praise the cars based on the new rules coming out in the next years to come.

OK, sorry I haven't been on here in a while but has anybody seem this?

    http://facelesspeople.com/

It's not what you may think it is just by looking at the url, it's the new Lotus car, it looks a lot like a baby Ferrari, just a lot cuter.

Lotus have been running an odd ad campaign for this car over the last couple of weeks, or at least that's that I've heard, not seem much of it myself though.

First off, that looks fantastic. It is probably a tenth of the price of a Ferrari.

That ad campiagn, why be cute. Just show he car, give it to the Top Gear guys to gush over, and let it sell itself.

not sure if you guys saw this a week or two back, but the italian police have a new car to chase down speeding motorists (or try to follow Olivier Panis if he's in the country). the car is a Lamborhini Gallardo and I wouldn't mind getting pulled over by this just so I could check it out.

    and a formula bmw chassis?:

Exactly my thoughts! It looks like one of those junior single-seaters, except that they have an airbox and has enough voltage to get you electrocuted. Those wings look... rather brutal.

But then again, that's how things tend to end up in the 1st year of new rules. Expect the aero profile to get more refined and defined as we go along and see the aero folks push those rules to the limit all over again.

  • Dank17/11/2008 at 09:54

I see the BMW pit-crew have got their marigolds on today!

  • F1Wolf17/11/2008 at 10:08

not as bad as I thought it would be, but the rear wings will need some time to get used too :-)

I think that what we see here is far from what BMW will actually run next year. This may be some rough version good enough for them collect data. But no team will be showing their cards now, in November, in the first winter test ...

the credit suisse part of the front wing seems to be the movable one

    The Evora.

Somewhere in drop.io is a few pictures I took at the Lotus 60th birthday party at Hethal. Includes more than a couple of the Evora.

Plus, I got to have a sit in it after most people had gone... It's a true 4 seater. I fit in the back of it! I'm not exactly a narrow person either.

As I'm not allowed an Elise or Exige by the other half - I've stuck my deposit down on one of these.

Agree 100%! Absolutely hideous (and nothing like the mockups we have been seeing over the last few weeks!)

Keep in mind however that we are seeing 2009 aero regs on the 2008 cars. Therefore I hope that when we see the 'proper' 2009 cars, they will look a little nicer and have better proportions (but somehow, I doubt it).

Bernie and Max are ordering their Teflon Tuxedoes as we speak...

Hideously ugly! You know, these new F1 cars are very dangerous because they are so ugly that every time one overtakes another, they will see it, get startled and distracted by the ugliness of it and crash!

    Hello everyone!

I was looking at the BMW pictures and somehow I think 2009 will be a year to forget, maybe a repeat of 2005.

As for Canada, it's so sad to see it go. Me and some friends are planning a GP trip for 2009 and since we live in the Dominican Republic, the obvious choice was to go to Montreal. Brazil is not an option, don't really like the country; so the other 2 options are Great Britain or Germany seeing as France dropped out of the calendar.

  • Steven Roy17/11/2008 at 13:38

Why are McLaren wasting time putting Gary Paffett in the car? They are surely not going to foist him on to FIF1.

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)17/11/2008 at 13:46

  • Flibster17/11/2008 at 13:48

Looks like the tape is holding a camera or sensor in place lookign at the end of the front wing or front tyre.

Possibly a heat sensor to monitor tyre temperatures?

  • me17/11/2008 at 13:55

    maybe brundle's twisted ron's arm?

maybe it's a threat to fif1 - do as we say or this man is coming your way.

  • Nelson17/11/2008 at 13:55

What about Australia, seeing as you plan to travel so far anyway?

That would be a lot more money :D. A flight for that date, if bought today, would be little over 4K, and that's the flight alone, you'd have to add car rental, hotel, race tickets and general expenses. I don't think a one week trip to a race is worth all that money.

I looked around and the Germany of Britain trip would be little under 3K for a full 2 weeks. Not to me mention the fact that the travel time is a lot less, for those 2 places we'd get conecting flights in Madrid. Well, I also forgot to add Barcelona, but we haven't really looked into that one.

Sack the board! Sack the board! Sack the board!

Is Bernie thick or something, if he kicks all these tracks off or something, we'll end up with about 15. Considering this year we had 18. We need to bring back some good tracks for 09. Really, if France, Canada and China go. We reality need to bring back tracks from:

    Indianapolis

Algarve (Is done, F1 testing, why the hell not?)

Have two Japanese GP's (Fuji and Suzuka)

Hence a new calendar of this(Changes in bold)

    Australia - Melbourne

    Malaysia - Sepang

    Japan - Suzuka

    Bahrain - Sakhir

    Spain - Barcelona

    Portugal - Algarve

    Monaco - Monte Carlo

    Turkey - Istanbul

    Britain - Silverstone

    Germany - Nurburgring

    Hungary - Budapest

    European - Valencia

    Belgian - Spa

    Italian - Monza

    Singapore

    Japanese - Fuji

    UAE - Abu Dhabi

    USA - Indianapolis

    Brazil - Interlagos

All tracks added are looking for F1 seats, and I think this will work well until 2010.

Option two is that everyone does a runner and create a rival series, that I will support.

Of course that plank Ecclestone will not listen to me and we'll have the fewest F1 races in a season since 1983.

I think tomorrow's 3-way shootout will be more indicative, with Bourdais joining in the fun. :D

But how about Loeb, eh? He did pretty well today. Bruno Senna? Not as much.

Apart from BMW which was in ugly configuration.

    Oooh, harsh! :P

Even as someone who's been a big fan of the new aerodynamic regulations, I have to say that BMW's front wing endplates look awful.

Guys, practical question: good places for blogging, can you help me out? I got sick of myspace and facebook, any suggestions where I could start a cool blog for my wombat? I know you’re all cutting edge and cutting Bono, so I need your advice, please?

If you're looking for another service linked to a social network, then you could try My Opera.

The two most popular blogging platforms are Blogger and Wordpress.

In terms of premium provides, Squarespace is getting loads of good press at the moment, and a lot of media companies use Typepad. I've never tried either service, though.

There are also a number of services that are a cross between a traditional blogging platform and a microblogging solution. Posterous is generating a lot of hype at the moment. Soup.io is another option.

Alternative traditional platforms include Blogsome, Blog.com, Blogr and Terapad.

I wouldn't dare attempt to link to all of those, so I've used Shrink2One.

I can't believe Nasa TV are going to cut from live coverage of the transfer of the MPLM to show us hi def replays of stuff they didn't show live yesterday. Tomorrow we will probably get hi def coverage of the stuff we are not seeing today.

  • Scott17/11/2008 at 17:13

    Today's testing times:

    http://www.f1technical.net/news/11091

Of note, Loeb was much quicker than Senna, van der Garde or Di Grassi. Whilst there are some mitigating circumstances such as Loeb having completed more laps, I believe this is only the third ever time he's driven a single-seater. An astonishing performance really, given Rossi's (lack of) pace following a very intensive testing programme.

  • Scott17/11/2008 at 17:19

Apparently van der Garde stuffed his Renault into the tyres, which probably didn't help his pace. The team were able to repair the car though, and get him back out.

Well the main one used at the start of Sidepodcast episodes and the one at the start of Sidepodpanel.

we made the main sidepodtheme ourselves (with inspiration from itv). the panel intro is an apple loop, but all we tell you right now is that it's called:

    Intro > C6

we'll dig through and find the name for ya later.

Do you guys make your own soundbites too (For example, the intro’s to each section in Sidepodcast)?

yup, they're all home grown using garageband. if you're interested in creating loops (or in fact being creative in any way), simply buy a mac... after that the rest is easy :)

yes, sorry my brain is broken today.

    the issues i have are:

    - the project needs to be hosted elsewhere (in case bernie objects)

    - i know next to nothing about coding in C

at the moment, i haven't thought beyond that, it never even occurred to me the feed was unencrypted to be honest.

honda are going down the same route as bmw:

oh good god that is hideous! and people thought dumbo-flugel were bad. yuck! oh i hope it's gonna make a significant improvement in their performance if they stick with it. Seriously, it looks a bit like a snow plow or something. How can anyone think based on the BMW and Honda today that those cars look better than the '08 ones.

Also from testing i notice that in pics of the slick tyres the softer compound have the pink stripe...are they really sticking with pink? i thought it was originally just an experiment.

So nice to have some kinda f1 news though, even if it's just about testing the new ugly parts for the new cars ;)

  • lou17/11/2008 at 18:11

Which reminds me, how bad did the buffering get last night?

It was ok... it got much better when the number of callers dropped (sorry Dom), and the test they did after the show with others hosting the call seemed to be even better. :)

the timing encryption is beaten easily - just with the user name and password like you'd do on windows. so it's not beaten so much, just used properly under a c environment. I didn't figure it out - someone else did that. I'm just thinking of taking to a next level.

Sidepodcast cannot lose to inuit environmentalists. If you have not voted yet click on the link below and about one third down the page you will find sidepodcast. All you have to do is click on the little green + sign.

Do you really want to lose to a bunch of environmentalists? What would Jeremy Clarkson say?

Well since their lives are revolved around them.

    anyone fancy explaining those sidepods?

Doesn't look like they are trying out for the 09 regs like everyone else

  • R.G (For the record, I like the 2009 cars)17/11/2008 at 20:23

    We may have some problems

Jennifer puts the other side of most environmental issues with some solid facts.

    -

jennifier produces a blog against the prevailing tide of opinion. She bases her conclusions on facts and destroys argumnents that are not based on facts

    -

I enjoy Jennifer's critical analysis of so-called scientific experts and she finds flaws in thier "so-called" facts or assumptions.

    -

All from the Inuit thingy majigy environmentally awful site.

    Why can't we negative blogs?

  • lou17/11/2008 at 20:25

Come on Sato-san! I wonder what specific KPIs STR will use to pick the new drivers. We know that Sato can drive, we know Buemi can give strong feed back, we know that Bore-day is good, but was outclassed - it'd be interesting to hear the chatter around the dinner table with Dietrich, Franz and Gerhard.

It would be odd to give a community award to a community that can't generate the most nominations. Can anyone having a look round understand the fun we have? In case they can't we should have the weight of numbers. We had over 150 teams in the Fantasy Racers so we should be able to rack up that number of nominations.

  • Le BOL17/11/2008 at 20:48

Now I'm thinking 1997 Ferrari marries 1998 Jordan...

Also, I've been thinking all day about 3rd place mystery for retiring drivers... Check it out: 2002 Irvine 3rd place Monza, retired the same year; 2003 Frentzen USA, 3rd place, moved to DTM; Wurz 2007, Canada, 3rd place, retired from racing; 2008 Canada, DC, 3rd place, the same; Rubens, UK, 3rd place, probably will retire... Spooky!

  • me17/11/2008 at 20:50

here are some details that may or may not relate to ferrari's kers implementation:

    http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/people/281799/exclusive-magneti-marelli-reveal-f1-kers.html

"Regenerative braking systems for 2009 are rapidly appearing, Magneti Marelli has revealed it is to join Flybrid, Williams, Zytek and Bosch in offering an off the shelf solution for Formula 1."

  • me17/11/2008 at 20:51

We had over 150 teams in the Fantasy Racers so we should be able to rack up that number of nominations.

that's true to a point. there weren't 150 entrants in a week and a bit though. it took the best part of a season to meet that target.

  • Scott in Italy (eating chips)17/11/2008 at 20:53

this is like the scene from Hunt for Red October with Agent Ryan intensely looking at the photo of the submarine and those vents.

  • me17/11/2008 at 20:54

also, some info on an unexpected kers producer:

    http://www.racecar-engineering.com/allarticles/281974/f1-kers-bosch-goes-modular.html

"Bosch has yet to run the system on a car, but it has already performed well on the test bench and is already being offered to partners, time will tell on how many will take it up but knowing Bosch, it will be rather a lot."

Given how much of a Skype bill sideodcast towers runs up on Skype I wondered if you were aware that for £6.95 a month you can have unlimited international calls. I don't know if this works for conference calls though.

woot! Rubens beat Massa in a race, in fact he did one better than that, he beat everyone he won! ok it’s a karting race, but a win is a win

Was it him, or were Luciano Burti and Tony Kanaan putting in the fast laps? :P

In all seriousness though, I agree that he deserves to be in Formula One next year. Sadly, I fear that he's been dropped. I remember hearing an interview with him towards the end of the season (China, maybe) where he was sounding unbelievably dejected. I thought at that point he'd received word that his contract wouldn't be renewed.

I just got put in spam for trying to keep sidepodcast's phone bill down.

so if i'm reading that right, assuming we don't go call crazy, £6.95 per month is all we'll ever pay?

It looks like the recent appointment to the ICA may not be what we hoped for. Skip the comments by Ali and me on the link and go straight to johnbull's. He makes the case very clearly with no need for an introduction.

That is great to hear about Martin.

Looking forward to it - and no advertising :)

Awesome to hear about Martin - only him and Ted are worth keeping for the BBC (c'mon BBC, give Ted a job too!)

On the subject of KERS - is anyone else a little worried about a flywheel system being so close to a driver's head? What happens to these systems in an accident anyway?

Fair point actually, they may move it around or something.

In an accident, good question, they might shut off automatically or the driver has some sort of button on the steering wheel. that, or break into tens of thousands of pieces.

There is no way you can stop a flywheel turning at 60k rpm by pressing a button without turning it into a lot of high speed shrapnel.
