The start of another week, and for myself at least, a good one. I am not at work this week, and can spend my days doing leisurely things, such as editing podcasts, and sorting out Sidepodradio bits and pieces. So, here are some of the other things I will be distracting myself with:

  • Joe has written a very interesting post about the injury that is keeping Schumacher from racing the Ferrari in Valencia. One thing it does suggest to me is that if Schumi is still struggling from his injury now, then we definitely won't see Massa back this year. But as Joe says, health really should be the number one priority, even if you are taking part in a sport that proclaims it's danger on the tickets.
  • I missed this at the time, but Maverick posted the second part of his mid-season review a couple of days ago. I especially enjoyed the first post with it's many graphs and great explanations, so this one is definitely worth checking out as well.
  • And turning to our own site for in-house plugging, Amy took a fantastic walk around Albert Park and live streamed it for us. We collected the videos in a post here. Meanwhile, we posted the second edition of our Interviews with Bloggers series, this time with Lukeh, and he has some amusing answers. Check it out if you have ten minutes to spare.

That'll do it for now. I'm not sure we can top what an entertaining weekend we've had, but we're worn out now, so perhaps it's time for some peace and quiet! However, we always want to know what you're up to, so I'll see you in the comments.

Hello new daily post, nice to see you've arrived on time!

    Midnight already? That was quick.

I also have this week off and I will be golfing, getting my exam results, visiting a 'House of Marbles' (I don't really know either), catching up with paperwork, getting an MOT for the car, more golfing, getting drunk with college peeps after we compare notes, and possibly going to Thorpe Park - although I've been so many times I'm not overly excited about that.

I am very confused. During the live show I had horrific buffering. I am now watching the replay and it has run for 21 minutes since I clicked play without a second's hesitation. Surely there is no difference watching the live show and the replay.

Yeah, it loads up the next bit before you watch it, i.e when i was watchng at 30 mins i could scroll up to 45-60 minutes without any problems.

A human chain of ice cream-licking cyclists made a bid to set a new Guinness world record in the small Austrian town of Fohnsdorf on Saturday, the Austria Press Agency (APA) reported.

If you click through on the link above the player it'll take you to his ustream account. You should probably do the same on his Qik account. From each you'll be able to pick the different videos. I think he did two on Ustream(?) and several on Qik.

If you ever watch any vids from the '96 Molson Indy Vancouver and you hear Paul Page calling it the suburbs, ignore him because the race is right in Downtown Vancouver. I guess he went to the Jim Macay school of broadcasting, damn it's getting tough to type, for those who don't know Mackay called Vancouver a village during the 1979 Soccer (Football) bowl in which the Whitecaps won. gotta get another beer.

    Morning all!

So today is Renault's Appeal day?

Honestly, I can't see how F1 can come out looking good if the appeal is either upheld or dismissed?

  • Aitch17/08/2009 at 07:12

Honestly, I can't see how F1 can come out looking good if the appeal is either upheld or dismissed?

i wonder if the fia will allow the team to race and allow the drivers to keep points if they score any but disqualify the team from collecting constructor points

  • Journeyer17/08/2009 at 07:24

Honestly, I can’t see how F1 can come out looking good if the appeal is either upheld or dismissed?

Is a suspended ban a good compromise?

i wonder if the fia will allow the team to race and allow the drivers to keep points if they score any but disqualify the team from collecting constructor points

That works too. I suspect we'll see one of these two options exercised.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 07:32

Honestly, I can’t see how F1 can come out looking good if the appeal is either upheld or dismissed?

Is a suspended ban a good compromise?

I think that looks like they are trying to let Alonso race in Spain to make money, so it looks bad to me.

i wonder if the fia will allow the team to race and allow the drivers to keep points if they score any but disqualify the team from collecting constructor points

That works too. I suspect we'll see one of these two options exercised.

The second is better and has a precedent with McLaren in 2007 but looks too knee-jerk and heavy handed. Also a Fail. What a mess!

Reuters say there's no damage reported so far.

Taiwan is SO unlucky right now.

Japan has been hit with 3 earthquakes in a week. I hope this isn't leading up to something worse.

  • F1Wolf17/08/2009 at 07:44

Reuters say there's no damage reported so far.

well the last time earthquake hit under the sea off Taiwan the major cable was cut and the result was quite similar to what I see now

even Twitter does not work me :-(

I don't - it's too harsh and Renault are victims of circumstance.

  • Aitch17/08/2009 at 07:52

Japan has been hit with 3 earthquakes in a week. I hope this isn't leading up to something worse.

i did hear a couple of weeks ago on a radio program that we are in cycle where we can expect more earthquakes. i hope that ain't true because we are well overdue for one here and the experts think it could hit in the high 8's to 9's on the Richter scale

  • Journeyer17/08/2009 at 08:04

I don’t – it’s too harsh and Renault are victims of circumstance.

But if they indeed not fully inform Alonso of what was going on, there is negligence there that needs to be punished accordingly.

  • Journeyer17/08/2009 at 08:05

now I can add also yahoo and flickr and everything else yahoo to the list of sites that don’t work for … something is not right

no one seems to be complaining here... yet. so i suspect it may be a different cable that broke.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 08:06

I don’t – it’s too harsh and Renault are victims of circumstance.

But if they indeed not fully inform Alonso of what was going on, there is negligence there that needs to be punished accordingly.

He knew there was a problem with the car (he thought it was a puncture) and the team told him to pit. Good enough for me.

    here's a better one.

Honestly, I can’t see how F1 can come out looking good if the appeal is either upheld or dismissed?

The accusation itself was the type to make looking good impossible. I can't see how the FIA can prove its allegation, but if it doesn't, there will always be suspicions hanging over the team.

I have a feeling the decision will be upheld.

The accusation itself was the type to make looking good impossible. I can't see how the FIA can prove its allegation, but if it doesn't, there will always be suspicions hanging over the team.

I have a feeling the decision will be upheld.

    Any news?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 11:31

    Any news?

    I just found this: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77730

    Not news really?

  • Alianora La Canta17/08/2009 at 11:31

    i wonder if the fia will allow the team to race and allow the drivers to keep points if they score any but disqualify the team from collecting constructor points {Comment #172}

That will really annoy me. As far as I could see, Alonso was the only one who demonstrably did anything wrong (by not slowing down when it became obvious something was wrong with his car). If he escapes punishment and his team doesn't, that would be an injustice.

  • Christine17/08/2009 at 11:32

According to the article, no, that's a correct assumption.

Ah, if it is upheld then Alonso could drive the Ferrari?

Makes sense, why else would Badoer have been announced? He's only temporary!

Let's see what James Allen says (as he speaks Italian and has contacts through his work with RAI TV) but maybe it's a paddock rumour like the one at the weekend about buying out Raikkonen's contract...

Why is this an exclusive article for subscribers on AUTOSPORT?

Analysis: Why Renault got its ban

Urm, because their wheel fell off.

I have read it somewhere else - it argues the penalty was harsh and without precedent, because Vettel got fined $50,000 in Australia and the only harsher penalty is a race ban.

It also mentions that race control ordered Vettel into the pits over the radio to the team, but they did not ask Renault to do that in Hungary...

We should go backwards in technology and send websites through the post. Instead of faster broadbands speeds, we could have faster delivery speeds. The doohickey could be a piece of paper sent out between followers. It's pure genius, a business ideas the royal mail are simply missing out on.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 15:32

But I personally think the penalty was deserved. What's the best solution, then?

I don't - it's too harsh and Renault are victims of circumstance.

Renault should be banned as it is entirely unacceptable to ignore safety procedures to try to get results. That kind of cowboy behaviour has to be stamped on hard. I love the following quote from the Renault lawyer in autosport's article .

"Was there a conscious wrongdoing from Renault? There was none what-so-ever. The only persons who knew were the two mechanics. Nobody on the pitwall knew there was a problem and the driver did not know either.

"There was a series of unfortunate events but no conscious wrongdoing."

Maybe it is just me but a mechanic lifting his hand to say the car can be released when he knows there is a problem is the conscious wrongdoing. The idea that no-one on the pitwall knew there was a problem when Martin Brundle picked up on a problem while the guy was trying to tighten the nut.

I think Renault are being let off very lightly.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 15:34

You sound too much like the FIA Stewards you love to hate Steven.

Then if you have to crucify someone for making a mistake, punish the mechanic who made the error - not the whole team.

I think Renault are being let off very lightly.

I think you have failed to see that this is something that has happened before without ban or punishment. Remember Raikkonen in France in 2008? A hot piece of exhaust the same size, shape and weight of the spring was allowed to dangle off the car and fly free - with no penalty.

Then there's Vettel in Australia - who did not come into the pits even when Race Control instructed the team to make him do so. They didn't do this for Renault in Hungary...

All of this is to crucify a team owner who Max hates and get Alonso into a Ferrari for his home GP... There would be no grounds for any kind of ban had it not happened in the week after Surtees and Massa.

  • Lukeh17/08/2009 at 15:41

I want to go for an extra line in between this...

I think that Steven is right these things should be punished hard.

    However the inconsistency is terrible.

It shouldn't be impossible to ever change the way that things are enforced.

So how to deal with this? This often happens actually that you want to make an example but it's unfair. The way to do this is to say, "this behavior will from now on get a ban, but because we have only just decided that - you will get a suspended ban this time".

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 15:43

Yep, they did. But that shouldn't have forced the stewards into a heavy-handed action and it did nothing to improve the safety of the sport - instead, F1 looks stupid and corrupt again :(

  • me17/08/2009 at 15:46

Yep, they did. But that shouldn't have forced the stewards into a heavy-handed action

sure it would. people like to see stuff happening, even if it's pointless and wrong stuff.

ignoring the situation would have seen f1/fia get it in the neck for not taking safety seriously. we know it's nuts, but that's the way it is.

  • Alex Andronov17/08/2009 at 15:47

    Quite considerably I would say...

It doesn't make what they did right though does it?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 15:54

You sound too much like the FIA Stewards you love to hate Steven.

Safety is top priority and deliberately flouting safety rules to try to get results should be hammered. People have had season long bans for breaking technical rules.

Then if you have to crucify someone for making a mistake, punish the mechanic who made the error - not the whole team.

How do you punish a mechanic? If a diver makes a mistake and crashes the car the team suffers. If the refueler screws up and the car stops the team suffer. All for 1 and 1 for all works both ways. If the mechanic does a good job at a pit stop is it fair that the team succeeds or should the win be just his success?

I think you have failed to see that this is something that has happened before without ban or punishment. Remember Raikkonen in France in 2008? A hot piece of exhaust the same size, shape and weight of the spring was allowed to dangle off the car and fly free - with no penalty.

I know it has happened before and it was wrong then. Raikkonen actually made a scheduled pit stop and Ferrari chose not to deal with th problem then. We cannot continue to accept blatant breaches of the safety regs. We can't go back to the bad old days where nothing happened till someone died.

All of this is to crucify a team owner who Max hates and get Alonso into a Ferrari for his home GP... There would be no grounds for any kind of ban had it not happened in the week after Surtees and Massa.

The idea that Alonso was ever going to race for Ferrari this season is fantasy. It cannot possibly hapen. Regardless of the two incidents there would be grounds for a ban but the FIA may not have banned them. Unfortunately prevailing circumstances have to be considered. Imagine if they had given them a token punishment and a similar incident happened in Valencia with Renault or someone else. The FIA would have been slaughtered and F1 would have been dragged through the gutter.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 15:55

Has Scott Woodwiss indicated when and how we are pre-recording the Sim Racing Radio show yet?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 15:55

    Renault won their appeal. Unsurprising.

    Utterly predictable

  • me17/08/2009 at 15:55

It doesn't make what they did right though does it?

not really, no. but the stewards avoided accusations of not acting in the interests of safety, and the appeal overturned their decision to exclude the team once everyone had forgotten what happened 3 or 4 weeks ago.

spanish ticket holders are happy, the fia are richer, the event organisers are happy too.

probably money changed hands behind the scenes, so some people have fatter wallets. we're none the wiser about the regs or what should happen next time, but maybe the transparent fia will let us know in due course.

  • me17/08/2009 at 15:57

Has Scott Woodwiss indicated when and how we are pre-recording the Sim Racing Radio show yet?

probably worth asking when he's around.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 15:57

    Fined $50,000 instead.

That is utterly pathetic. If you are a team boss what instructions do you give a mechanic now if he thinks the nut is tight but he can't get the safety to engage knowing that the penalty is a 50K fine? Is the gamble on a race win worth writing a cheque for 50K? You bet it is.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 15:58

OK fair enough, although I disagree on the ban and the circumstances that led to it you and Mr. C. have some very fair points on the matter - but hasn't F1 been dragged through the gutter anyway now? Like I said this morning, the FIA has put F1 in a lose-lose situation and only made the sport look worse yet again!

  • me17/08/2009 at 15:58

It might be too late for that - unless we hear about a rush for tickets I fear most may be unable to make plans at such short notice...

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 15:59

So how to deal with this? This often happens actually that you want to make an example but it's unfair. The way to do this is to say, "this behavior will from now on get a ban, but because we have only just decided that - you will get a suspended ban this time".

The trouble is as long as Max is in power he will never hace specific penalties for specific offences

  • Christine17/08/2009 at 15:59

    They decided the result today?

    I already did F1 Minute.

    Gah.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 15:59

Has Scott Woodwiss indicated when and how we are pre-recording the Sim Racing Radio show yet?

Roge-o. Wondered if you'd heard anything?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 16:00

Yep, they did. But that shouldn't have forced the stewards into a heavy-handed action and it did nothing to improve the safety of the sport - instead, F1 looks stupid and corrupt again :(

It surely would stop a mechanic in future releasing a car he knew was not safe and it would stop his boss telling him to do it.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 16:01

    They decided the result today?

    I already did F1 Minute.

    Gah.

Ah, it's your fault then? Didn't you make Debrief show notes just before they were banned?

It's so annoying! Maybe I won't bother doing a Digest Preview because they'll probably decide to race on Thursday instead and make it all nonsense anyway.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 16:04

Imagine the press since the last race if they had not banned Renault. Every paper, news channel and website would have been full of pictures of Surtees, Massa and the Alonso incident. Now all they have done is bury the news that there is no ban.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 16:06

your wheel will fall off and you'll drop from first place to last?

The wheel nut would hold the wheel on as it did before there was a locking device. The problem Renault had was that the safety would not engage because the nut was not properly tightened due to the stupid illegal aerodynamic device coming loose.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 16:06

    They decided the result today?

Clearly Valencia still has a lot of tickets to sell

  • Jon Waldock17/08/2009 at 16:07

why do people bother penalising teams if they get over turned in the courts?

  • Lukeh17/08/2009 at 16:10

Because f1 is run by, using the official term, silly billies.

  • Jon Waldock17/08/2009 at 16:11

Indeed, it just makes a whole mockery of 'justice' and punishing people

  • Nick17/08/2009 at 16:17

I think F1 needs to decide if commercial coniderations come into the frame when it makes judgements.

The sport does exist to put on a show. I dont mind if this is a factored into punishments. but if so it needs to be done consistently. Such random punishments and decisions do nobody any good.

  • Lukeh17/08/2009 at 16:23

I like BBCF1's choice of picture

To me there are two ways of looking at F1. Either it is an entertainment put on for the benefit of the audience and therefore utterly fake. If e go down that route they may as well bring in rules that says the drivers have to slide the cars through corners and do a donit on every lap.

The alternative is that it is a sport which we observe and the sport takes priority regardless of the effect on the audience or the business.

For me it is a sport and if Bernie is stupid enough to put a second race in Spain which has a long history of empty grandstands before Alonso turned up then it is tough if for whatever reason Alonso is not there. Like with Schumacher recently if people buy tickets only to see one driver then that is their problem if he is not there.

Spain only cares when Alonso wins - so it was a daft idea to have a race so far away from his home region and practical suicide not to allow him to race there...

Spain only cares when Alonso wins - so it was a daft idea to have a race so far away from his home region and practical suicide not to allow him to race there...

They tried several tracks over the years before Barcelona and only Montjuich drew a crowd. Unfortunaltely the teams ended up trying to intall the armco barriers because they had not been done properly, In that race Rolf Stommelen went straight through a barrier and a bunch of fans were killed.

For years at Valencia we used to have races with almost no-one there because Spain was only interested in motor bike racing.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 16:32

    Bye Lukeh

  • Nick17/08/2009 at 16:36

Why is it commonsense not to ban them from Valencia?

Because motorsport is intrinsically commercial, and it doesn't make any sense to make decisions which are commercially damaging.

Unlike football where you can play with jumpers for goalposts, motorsport needs to make money to exist.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 16:39

That's not a fair argument - it's like saying Rooney gets a ban for a red card but he can play against Arsenal next week and then take the ban?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 16:41

Supposing Valencia was the last race of the season. What takes priority commercial or sporting? If that is the case at the end of the season why not in the middle? Supposing Alonso's car was great at Monza and hopeless at Valencia would it be fair to everyone else to move the ban? If the ban had been swapped to Monza are teams in future allowed to choose when they serve a ban?

  • Jon Waldock17/08/2009 at 16:42

Well thats not 100% true, it depends, if its on but just not tight enough then it will make a difference, but if its not correctly threaded on, i.e at an angle, then you are right in saying it wont make a difference

  • Jon Waldock17/08/2009 at 16:43

That's not a fair argument - it's like saying Rooney gets a ban for a red card but he can play against Arsenal next week and then take the ban?

In the Renault case the problem was that the nut was tightened against the aero thing and when it moved the nut was effectively loose. So it was tthreaded correctly but it was not even in contact with the wheel or the aero part.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 16:48

Exactly. A ban is a ban. Except in F1, who seem to have a knack of always navigating into a sh-storm every time a decision needs to be made!

I am not saying the teams should be abe to choose where they serve the ban, just that somone at the FIA should look at the applications of punishments from a neutal perspective, and decide how punishments should be applied IF commercial considerations are to be taken into account, as they appear to have been in this situation.

For example they would see that Valencia it is important to have the national f1 hero racing and suspend the ban to Spa. At spa they would see that this is effectively Renaults home race with the French GP not being on the calendar, as well as being the most local GP for their main sponsor IMG.

I am all for a straitforward neutral decision is final thing if that were the case. But the lack of transparency and muddled decision's at the moment would surely benefit by being fairer and more open

    - news: renault banned from next race

    - news: renault to appeal

    - news: renault win appeal

who's angry? i was only annoyed for about 20 minutes and then we did a debrief and by the end of it i was happy again. if the appeal had been upheld, i would've felt that harsh, but in the end it seems to me f1 came through this quite well.

The current FIA administration has made a complete mess of discipline issues. To me the best way i to say any ban starts immediately. If Renault were desperate to be at Valencia they should not break the rules at the previous race.

True, but its not just Renault, its the circuit owner in Valencia, the fans who had bought tickets and people wanting to watch a guy race in his home race on tv who get punished as well.

This way Renault still get punished but its commercially less damaging

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 17:00

I am saying The FIA should be able to take commercial considerations into account without compromising their authority. At the moment they have no choice but to either ban them from Valencia or let them off with a small fine.

If they had a system to decide where bans were served we might have had a better decision

I wonder how many people will say that the ban got overturned so Alonso could race at home? Lots of people think the sport is a fix and this will not exactly convince them otherwise...

I left a comment on Joe's blog the day Schumacher announced his comeback was off saying that it was a certainty now that this ban would be drpped. You have to wonder ifthe whole Schumacher thing was a smokescreen

  • me17/08/2009 at 17:02

If commercial considerations were not taken into account why has a race ban been changed to an irrelevant fine?

because i believe the stewards were reacting to cover their arses after the previous two incidents in successive race weekends.

i don't think it was a just or correct penalty in the first place. if no-one was injured in previous races, nothing would have happened.

also, don't forget ben the renault crashing steward was present.

No they shouldnt!! They can insist all they want, but they shouldnt be allowed to have any control over anything that isnt in their control!

At the begining of the year the teams should send a list to the FIA with 3 or 4 races it was important for them not to miss with a clear and valid case for it being there (apart from the last race) ranked in order. For example could say: Monza (home race) Brazil (Driver's home race) Abu Dhabi (Major Sponsor/Investor)

I am sayin F1 is a sport and sporting factors should take priority. Someone mentioned Wayne Rooney before and it was a valid example. Football clubsare not and should never be allowed to say when their star players are banned. There are massive commercial implications for football clubs if they lose a couple of star players from important games but sporting factors must always take priority or we may as well turn F1 into drifting with style points for the best donut display.

  • Nick17/08/2009 at 17:22

There is a massive difference between the 2. The equivelent for that example would f1 teams being able to choose where the ban is served because the weather report was bad and they dont think they will do well in the wet. Or avoiding tracks their drivers dont do well at..

I am saying the people awarding the ban should use common sense to implement it, instead of having to choose between letting someone off or damaging the sport.

Why is it commonsense not to ban them from Valencia?

Because motorsport is intrinsically commercial, and it doesn’t make any sense to make decisions which are commercially damaging.

Unlike football where you can play with jumpers for goalposts, motorsport needs to make money to exist.

That’s not a fair argument – it’s like saying Rooney gets a ban for a red card but he can play against Arsenal next week and then take the ban?

That's not a fair argument either Gavin. In Soccor, if the most important player for Arsenal is banned from the next home game, then Arsenal will suffer a drop of revenue for that one game. There are all the other home games for Arsenal to make money from. If he is banned for the next away game - Well hopefully Glasgow Rangers will host Aresnal a second time, as an example.

Now Valenica. A stupid circuit in a stupid city, in only its second year of existance. If Alsono is banned, it is not like Alsonso is going to return that season for another race right? It is not like NASCAR where both the Pepsi 400 and Daytona 500 are held at the same track circuit of Daytona..... The race organizers have the one shot to make money.

Valencia chose to stage a race to cash in on Alonso. That is their problem. There was alwats an element of risk that he could get banned or injured or killed or decide to be an astronaut. If they haven't budgeted for that or taken out insurance against that then that is their problem. The sport should never be corrupted to cope with commercial incompetence.

Arsenal and Rangers are not in the same league so they won't pkay each other apart from freindly matches. No football club looses money from players being missing becaase players are missing. Where it makes a diference is if they the loss of one or more of their top players costs them a result in an important match. For example they can be defeated in a European match and drop £10 million easily as a result.

Now Valenica. A stupid circuit in a stupid city, in only its second year of existance. If Alsono is banned, it is not like Alsonso is going to return that season for another race right? No, but I was highlight the point that appears to be lost on everyone that Unless F1 is run solely at race tracks owned by Bernie or Max, we can expect to punish drivers at their home races and not expect these circuit to go belly up. Since 1978 Montreal has been milking the Villeneuve name and given Villeneuve status in F1 it is not surprizing that it is always a sold out event.....

Now I think Bernie owns the Hungaroring, so if we had all F1 races there, we might be able have consistant bans on drivers and teams as there would be no siginicant loss on revenue to the circuit as he could fall back on his TV deals....

Do you think all F1 races at Hungary would be interesting?

  • Alex Andronov17/08/2009 at 17:40

Tryin to keep up with the long comments so I may be repeating something somebody said earlier. But in football (soccer) if you get a red card you miss the next three games. if you want to appeal a red card then the appeal will automatically be in 10 days from the incident. So clubs will always appeal if their star players because the 3 game ban cannot start until the appeal is decided.

It depends on the offence technically. A ban takes place a week after, so if you get suspended on a Sunday, you can still play in a Wednesday match. In theory, also the Saturday match. But the ban starts on the Sunday.

Then the FA has the option to cancel the suspension, keep it, or increase it say if it was a ridiculous challenge etc.

    And back to lurking.

That is totally wrong. If Hamilton was banned from Silverstone the stands would still be pretty much filled. Same if Button was banned. That is because there is a history and love of the sport so that it attracted big crowds in the years when there was not a competitive home driver.

If people decide to host races based on the presence of one driver and don't take insurance out against the possibility of him being there then that is their problem. Races should not be going to countries like Spain with a history of putting on races in front of empty grandstands. The Valencia race is run by the city of Valencia and it will make no difference whatever to them if Alonso is not there. They won't even see a dip in the city's budget.

Yes, Alonso should be World Champion. The reason being that PK, jr screwed up massively on a top notch car and was unable to bring home enough points to land the Constructor's Championship that you omitted.

If Alonso and PK did their jobs well ==> like as Senna and Prost, or Mansell and Patrese, the team would pick up the Constructor's Championship that you obviously omitted by less than half way into the season and at that point the team does not care who becomes the Driver's Champ becasue it is going to be one or their two drivers anyway.....

The Driver's Championship should not be worth the amount of metal used to create it that the team should not give a Rat's --- that one of their driver's smashes into the other guy to get it. Once a whinner moves to another team (Ferrari) then by all mean the Owner should blame the whinner for wrecking both cars...

Since 1978 Montreal has been milking the Villeneuve name and given Villeneuve status in F1 it is not surprizing that it is always a sold out event…..

That is totally wrong. If Hamilton was banned from Silverstone the stands would still be pretty much filled. Same if Button was banned. That is because there is a history and love of the sport so that it attracted big crowds in the years when there was not a competitive home driver.

If people decide to host races based on the presence of one driver and don’t take insurance out against the possibility of him being there then that is their problem. Races should not be going to countries like Spain with a history of putting on races in front of empty grandstands. The Valencia race is run by the city of Valencia and it will make no difference whatever to them if Alonso is not there. They won’t even see a dip in the city’s budget.

Given that it lonly took the British 30 years to develop decent drivers the Spanish are doing a remarkable job, Steven. Back in the 30's I am sure it made perfect sence to Abondon England and set up more races in Italy and Germany...

Hang on ... in that case Bernie gets punished in the pocket, something he mortally avoids like the plague!

I'm sorry you've completely lost me?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/08/2009 at 17:58

Yes, Alonso should be World Champion. The reason being that PK, jr screwed up massively on a top notch car and was unable to bring home enough points to land the Constructor's Championship that you omitted.

If Alonso and PK did their jobs well ==> like as Senna and Prost, or Mansell and Patrese, the team would pick up the Constructor's Championship that you obviously omitted by less than half way into the season and at that point the team does not care who becomes the Driver's Champ becasue it is going to be one or their two drivers anyway.....

What??? Alonso is driving the nuts off the car ... literally! OK Piquet is pants, but you can't blame Alonso for the fact that the car is awful!

The Driver's Championship should not be worth the amount of metal used to create it that the team should not give a Rat's --- that one of their driver's smashes into the other guy to get it. Once a whinner moves to another team (Ferrari) then by all mean the Owner should blame the whinner for wrecking both cars...

I think people only care about the drivers - only the Manufacturers give the rats bum about boasting how they won the constructors championship...

That comment was in reply to mine earlier. Jordan said that Alonso should not suffer because the team made a mistake and I said in that case he should not be world champion if the team does a great job by giving him a great car etc.

I don't think Lewis can take the credit for developing the car when there is a testing ban though can you?

The point is, the Renault is awful - and there is not much a driver can do apart from making the best of what he has... And I think if you look at the gap between the two drivers, he is.

Disagree. The designer makes the car and the team make the best of developing what they have.

Without testing, how can the driver help as much as he used to?

yup. every bit of feedback he and kovi give, goes towards making that car faster.

The point is, the Renault is awful - and there is not much a driver can do apart from making the best of what he has... And I think if you look at the gap between the two drivers, he is.

i'm not saying he isn't. i'm just saying he's as much responsible as the people in the factory.

OK Piquet is pants, but you can't blame Alonso for the fact that the car is awful!

Funnily enough earlier in the season Alonso's fans were saying the reason the McLarenwas awful was because Lewis had relied on Alonso to be the development driver. I assume they now beliee that Hamilton is now the better development driver.

    i do.

I have no idea which is better. What we do know is that Lewis has given good enough feedback to help turn the car around.

  • me17/08/2009 at 18:13

I assume they now beliee that Hamilton is now the better development driver.

    i do.

although i should add, i think kovi is good in this respect too. whereas piquet isn't good at anything, least of all car development. therefore mclaren have a better chance of improving things.

If the team can give you a car that can assure you World Championship status. Not unlikely as this has been before - Then it is still up to the driver to drive it. Witness Senna vs Prost in the McLaren, Fangio vs Moss in the Mercedes, Hill and Villeneuve at Williams, to the ultimate mismatch between drivers - Mansell vs. Patrese at Williams. In the Constructors, the cars kicked butt to the poin that the season was just half over and you knew who had the best car. Now only Mansell was able to beat Patrese by half way through the season, the other cases the drivers went down to the wire. So yes, you can have the best car in F1, but you still have to beat your teammate to be Champion. So in Prost's, Moss', Villeneuve's and Patrese's caes, where did the team go wrong ? The team gave them great cars but they did not become world champions that year. So the driver's should not be banned when the team makes amassive screw up.

Like when Jenson just said "I can't get heat into the tyres" and stuff like that?

You can regularly hear dribers giving a whole list of feedback especially during Friday practise. They will talk about understeer in the entry to low speed corners becoming neutral then oversteer and the car bottoming out at the front at one corner. They quite regularly gie a list of about 10 points after each run befre the radio is cut and the engineer starts asking specific questions.

That is rarely done anywhere nowadays due to Tagguchi and Design of Experiment. What is generally done is a grid of tests can be calculated and anysis of the grid tells you which individula factors are having what effect. So you can make several tests of mutiple changes and the analysis will give you a good estimate of the optimum.

    ahh. what's your plan now?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 18:38

I guess it shows how much better they are than telemetry eh?

It's a combination. It is easy to underestimate the feedback they can give though. As an example I remember when Top Gear got hold of the Koenigsegg which had clearlt had a lot of money spent on it to get the fesign right to be stable at speed for normal drivers. The Stig took it out to srt a lap time and lost it. He told them that if they put a wing on the nack it would go round the track 4 seconds faster. They went a way talked to him about the design of the wind and when they went back the time improved by close to four seconds.

Bear in mind that a road car doesn't give anything close to the feedback to a driver that a race car does.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 18:39

OK I'm reading up on this but I don't understand how they can make an array that would show an improvement on an F1 car? Any ideas?

They could do something along the lines of havin the front and rear wings set at three different leves, the useless flappy thing on the front wing set at noth extremes of its range and add it a couple of changes of ride height and a shark fin or not.

I assume all the aero work they do in a wind tunnel is donethis way.

And from the range of values tested they figure out the effect of each and from that the optimum?

  • Janna17/08/2009 at 19:03

This is probably a stupid question, but if they test a number of things all at once and there's a problem, how do they know which of the things caused it? If it's the combination you could reconfigure but if it's one piece causing all the problems how would you know?

My point is if the team do a great job the driver benefits and if they break the rules the driver suffers. All for one and one for all. You only want one half of that to apply and the other half not to.

And if the team screw up legally the driver suffers. Witness the BRM H-16. If JYS retired F1 after his year driving his BRM H-16 even you would have called him hopeless. Fortuneatly JYS stayed in F1 and went to what became Tyrrell.

Then there's that Alesi missing front right tyre pit stop disater. Nothing illegal about it. Just the one tire was missing when Alesi cam into the pits. Could not figure out what was going on after three seconds as I was on the floor laughing. Alesi suffered.

Now for drivers doing illegal activites. Hey, Bertrand Gachot, did Jordan suffer when you got charged for assult? No, they just hired a German No-body - some Mike guy that makes shoes for a living....

Yup $150,000 from Mercedes Benz to give Schuie a try while Gachot in the Bighouse, real suffering for Jordan that...

So when the driver does something illegal which does not happen much, the team does not suffer, it opens a replacment slot. Like you said Steven, all for one, and so Alsono should race elsewhere for REnault's mistake.

Here's something for you all to check out. It's quite a long video at 8 minutes but you won't regret it. Ona a Ukranian talent show, a woman retells the story of Ukraine in WW2 by using sand. It sounds bizarre, I know, but it is absolutely incredible, and so very moving. This is a real talent without a doub.

As a sidenote, has that Internet Squirrelly Squirrel been discovered either reading or reading whatever is on the back of Page 22 of F1 magazine that has me's photo of the Mclaren test, yet?

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 19:15

And from the range of values tested they figure out the effect of each and from that the optimum?

Pretty much. If it has been designed properly you can end up with something very close to the ideal. So instead of adding on a front wing and running through all the options with that before you add the rear wing and repeat you have saved a huge percentage of time. Of course F1 being F1 it's a moving target you are aiming for so hitting the ideal regardlees how goof the design is will be unlikely but you will be a lot closer than by only changing one thing at a time.

You get some indication form the results. In the end it omes down to how well the people designing the experiment understand the variables and if they have constructed the grid in a way that will highlighr for example that having the front wing set at maximum stalls the airflow at the sidepods.

No they would not. Alsonso's personal sponours are transfered form overall to overall each time he moves teams. Just like everyone else's personal sponours. The Team's sponours would obviously be different. Witness Lauda's red Paramlet cap or whatever milk company that's on his head all the time... The only other cap you ever saw on Lauda's head was whatever name of tire won him that particular race...

I am just saying that the driver is screwed. If the driver does anything that is illegal (out or in F1) of F1 then the team is going to find a replacement for him. The team is not punished and migth even find a better driver.

If the team does something legal the driver is punished with the team. The driver should bve allowed to driver for differnt teams like did happen in the old days. I do remember Fangio winning a Driver's Championship using two different cars. So the precident is there, if nothing else.

glad you like the new thing though.

over the past couple weeks it's slowly impacting on me how much the new media thing has an effect on everything, and it was probably the Qik stuff that was the straw that broke the camels back (in a good way) and i wanna embrace it :D

    Amy I dont suppose you know anything about doing a postgraduate course to convert a normal degree into a legal one? {Comment #296}

In the UK, you need to do a CPE conversion course. It's a postgraduate taught course (one year full-time, two years part-time) taught at many British universities. I've also found a site that describes the pass rates for each university, which you may wish to consider before signing up for such an expensive course.

Unfortunately I do not know the procedure for outside the UK.

  • Alianora La Canta17/08/2009 at 21:14

    Then if you have to crucify someone for making a mistake, punish the mechanic who made the error – not the whole team. {Comment #342}

Unfortuantely the FIA doesn't have any specific sanctions (other than a fine or a ban) that it could actually issue to a mechanic. Given the number of other mechanics who have made errors and gone unpunished, and the fact that the regulation the FIA cited says it is the team's responsibility to release cars safely, the mechanic could justifiably feel aggrieved if punished directly. Having the team punished and pass the monetary element (or a portion thereof) to the mechanic would be another matter...

  • me17/08/2009 at 21:14

Sorry about that.. i thought Lukeh had gone!

    Then there’s Vettel in Australia – who did not come into the pits even when Race Control instructed the team to make him do so. They didn’t do this for Renault in Hungary… {Comment #342}

Vettel did, however, get black-flagged and fined for his misdemeanour. Perhaps Race Control declined to call Alonso in because Vettel had ignored it back then - it's not obliged to call anyone in, after all.

    Renault won their appeal. Unsurprising. {Comment #343}

This is good news. I did wonder how exactly the FIA intended to prove its allegation. It must have been a pretty poor showing from the FIA though, for the result to be given a day early...

Nick, if you're interested in a full time course then you do need to apply through ucas, part time ones you can generally do outside of ucas via forms etc. If you're intereted in applying you need to do it now, because you'll have to go through clearing (thursday) to do it.

Well, if it's only a question of accidental unsafe release (the court having appeared to accept it wasn't deliberate), then that is the highest non-sporting penalty that can be issued, and the sporting penalty of disqualification is superfluous because Renault effectively disqualified itself by dint of its actions.

ah you got there before me!! fair enough, i'd phone unis tbh, find out the procedure

  • Alianora La Canta17/08/2009 at 21:33

    Thanks Alianora… I have been looking at British universities but they dont seem to have any way of knowing if you can join a course in September if you haven’t applied through UCAS, so i have been looking at AUS as they start in January {Comment #782}

    You're welcome.

What you need to do is ask the universities directly. Given the urgency involved, phoning is your best bet. They should be able to advise you a) whether they are likely to have vacancies and b) what you need to do to fulfil them. While all the universities have probably got their Plan A organised, drop-outs and people who've missed their predicted degree classification could mean there are spots opening on courses.

Start with the courses/universities that look most interesting, but be warned: you might have to settle for a course other than the one you would have picked had you had a free choice. Having Australia as a backup option is a good idea, but you may need to convert the course to British law if you want to go back to Britain to practise (such courses are probably less expensive or time-consuming than the CPE).

UCAS deal with undergraduate courses as well as postgraduate teaching ones, but they don't have anything to do with most postgraduate courses (including those pertaining to the legal profession).

I passed the two relatively easy ones.

Amazingly, I passed the really hard tax exam where I couldn't get the numbers to work (I think I passed on the workings out - always show your workings!)

And I did not pass the Financial Statements paper so I have to retake in December. Actually I passed Part 1 and failed Part 2, which was kinda what I expected.

  • Alianora La Canta17/08/2009 at 21:39

    ignoring the situation would have seen f1/fia get it in the neck for not taking safety seriously. {Comment #352}

Instead it's getting it in the neck for generating yet another psuedopolitical mess. My first aid tutor last week commented on F1 "politics" in a negative way, and the only F1 drivers he appeared to know about were Hamilton and Massa...

    It might be too late for that – unless we hear about a rush for tickets I fear most may be unable to make plans at such short notice… {Comment #363}

Spaniards can be rather spontaneous when it comes to deciding whether to buy tickets - my Spanish teacher at secondary school claimed that a fair number of them check the day's weather before getting tickets for activities involving going out. However, the sheer dullness of 2008's race may mean the increase in ticket-buying is slow. Even Alonso and Schumacher combined are not enough to guarantee an exciting race (otherwise 2004 would have been thrill-a-minute).

    why do people bother penalising teams if they get over turned in the courts? {Cmment #374}

Because the stewards don't think before making false accusations (had the accusation been true there would have been no benefit, and some cost, to the FIA in reducing the penalty).

i don’t really see this as a storm though?

    - news: renault banned from next race

    - news: renault to appeal

    - news: renault win appeal

    who’s angry? {Comment #403}

The sort of people who follow F1 casually and spend half their pre-race build-up having to be updated about the latest stupidity. Since they make up large proportions of F1's audience, that would classify as a storm. What they see is a team doing something, them being considered in the wrong, and then deemed in the right again. It's very difficult to handle such a thing well. Though F1 might get away with such a thing once, it's become the rule rather than the exception. That's causing an underlying anger that F1 is generally a mess because it can't make its mind up what it's doing...

  • Alianora La Canta17/08/2009 at 22:28

    If commercial considerations were not taken into account why has a race ban been changed to an irrelevant fine? {Comment #422}

Because, reading between the lines of the Autosport story, the FIA couldn't prove that Renault's actions were deliberate. Since this was the complete reason why the FIA was proposing to treat Renault's behaviour differently to other unsafe releases in the past, this meant they could only issue the same penalties as had been issued for other unsafe release - which are substantially lighter.

Time penalties were impossible because Renault had effectively disqualified itself. Disqualification was impossible because Alonso pitted (by necessity) the lap the problem was noticed, meaning he never went past the post where the black flag is kept. Therefore all the FIA could do was issue a fine, so it issued the largest one it thought it could get away with issuing.

  • me17/08/2009 at 22:29

I think my computer would seize! It has a strop on the /livestreaming page now, even when only one or two are running, because there are so many stream boxes which are all phoning home to check for new content.

At the moment it isn't a major problem, just that it is hard to scroll the browser or switch windows - which you don't really need to do during a 1 or 2 person live stream anyway if you have those one side and comments the other.

    I am saying The FIA should be able to take commercial considerations into account without compromising their authority. {Comment #425}

They can't. For one thing, Steven is right to say there would be massive difficulties in making commercial considerations compatible with a sport. Also, the FIA is banned from getting involved in the commercial side of F1 by the EU.

  • Steven Roy17/08/2009 at 22:36

Because, reading between the lines of the Autosport story, the FIA couldn't prove that Renault's actions were deliberate. Since this was the complete reason why the FIA was proposing to treat Renault's behaviour differently to other unsafe releases in the past, this meant they could only issue the same penalties as had been issued for other unsafe release - which are substantially lighter.

I don't think that is an adequate explanation from the FIA. Either the mechanic knew the safety device was not engaged which seems to be the case from the Renault evidence where their argument is no-ine on the pitwall knew about the problem and only two mechanics did or the device failed in which case the Renault devices should have to pass an inspection before being allowed on track in Valencia. The only other possibility is that the mechanic thought the device had engaged when it had not and therefore should need to be inspected before it runs in Valencia.

  • Paul17/08/2009 at 22:43

I don't think that is an adequate explanation from the FIA.

The problem, as I have said before, is the complete arbitrary nature of the FIA penalties and decisions. I agree that if this had happened 2 or 4 weeks before, no one would have said a thing. They need published rules that they follow. Spa last year is another classic example of random decision making. Until the FIA publish rules before incidents happen, we will continue to see these random penalties and appeals.

  • Alianora La Canta17/08/2009 at 22:44

    I am saying the people awarding the ban should use common sense to implement it, instead of having to choose between letting someone off or damaging the sport. {Comment #461}

If the FIA had stuck to an allegation it could conclusively have proved, then there would have been no ban in the first place and therefore this would never have been discussed.

If precedent was different and accidental pit lane releases had been punishable through bans, then it could have banned with impunity and little damage to the sport would have been wrought. OK, Fernando would have been frustrated and his fans disappointed, but if the FIA had made clear what Fernando's team had done wrong, then commercial damage would have been low. Certainly it would have been lower than this U-turning performance the FIA has put in through (I suspect) reaching further than it could grasp.

    The only other possibility is that the mechanic thought the device had engaged when it had not and therefore should need to be inspected before it runs in Valencia. {Comment #940}

If the device is to be inspected before Valencia, it won't necessarily be announced ahead of time. It may not even get special mention in the Technical Notes unless it fails special testing or is testing in the middle of the race weekend, which poses a problem for checking what the FIA has done about this situation.

Grosjean won the GP2 Asia Series in 2008, which qualifies him for a Superlicence automatically. I'm sure the relevant paperwork will have been sent off during the holidays.

I managed to survive last night's festivities and I don't have a hangover. Now I need some food, there doesn't seem to be much in the fridge so maybe another beer is in order:) or maybe not.

How can you not have a hangover. You promised you would.

This points to a lack of motivation!

Just doing some catching up with the comments and I must apologize for letting you all down by not having a hangover especially after I said that I would have one. I will try harder next time:D
