We're still coming down from the Race of Champions high, but now it is time to turn our attention back to Formula 1. There's more testing going on this week, so there should be plenty to keep our eye on, although it will no doubt be more of the same - not knowing who is actually fast, and who is just running 2008 rather than 2009 setups. Elsewhere:

  • Mosley has admitted that the current points system isn't exactly ideal and it may even have been a mistake to bring it in. However, he doesn't want to bring in a new points system without consulting the public, as he doesn't want to confuse everyone. This just sounds so out of character!
  • Hamilton missed out on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, and if you look at the screen shot used for the BBC video story, he doesn't look too happy about it. I bet he's just wishing they could have duelled at the RoC cause he was bound to have won.
  • Sebastien Loeb pipped DC to the Race of Champions trophy, which is really telling considering that Loeb was recently testing in the Red Bull. Was this just a demonstration of Loeb's multi-car skill, or would he have outshone DC in Formula 1 machinery as well?

Please feel free to share any thoughts or news you come across today, and don't feel limited by what I've mentioned above. I'll see you in the comments.

I'm confident that even 'me' would have outshone DC in Formula 1 machinery. And that's allowing for his efforts on the simulator at Silverstone. :P

Well good morning everybody! Thought I'd start my day listening to a bit of my favourite guitar player Joe Satriani.

If anyone has listened to Coldplay's Viva La Vida, you can hear they've kind of stolen the chorus from this song. Put the two together and they sound exactly the same (In the chorus that is, not the entire song.) Mind you, there's a video somewhere which plays both songs on top of each other and I have to say it actually sounds bloody awesome! As does this :P

This made me think this song would be great as the opening music for live shows. But then I remembered the podcast safe rules so it can never happen. Well, it could, Joe just doesn't need to find out ;)

    Good morning all,

    What a fantastic RoC!!!

Normally I wouldn't say this, but with the year that Sebastian Loeb had, I must say that he really is a fantastic all-round driver and truly worthy of the title "Champion of Champions"!

Nobody can hold a candle to him in the WRC and he is fast at everything he sits in - the way he beat Vettel also after crashing was amazing! I have said this many times before, but he should leave the WRC and win Le Mans for Peugeot!

On that note, the way David Coulthard drove was also brilliant. It was a fantastic way to bookend a great career and for me, his performance in the RoC makes up for all the mistakes in the terrible year he had :-)

    Catch you later,

    Gavin

can anyone explain to me, and perhaps also to Mr. Sebastien Loeb, how on Earth did he manage to win that race against Yvan Muller ? He almost decapitated the lady sitting next to him, totally reshaped the track, almost stopped the car, and still went on to win the race :-)

what a great show it was. the only problem is that it was on till 3am over here and that affects me a bit today ...

For real? Sweeeet. Well it is the time for giving and receiving, and you'd be doing just that - you'd be giving the seller the money and receiving the Esprit in return ;) So, on that note, I don't see why not :P

I was sat right in front of that as it happened! The whole audience gasped in unison as Loeb almost decapitated both himself and his plucky co-driver! His comeback was immense though and drew a standing ovation when he finished ahead of Muller.

The one thing I will say about motorsports fans is that they can appreciate each and every driver. It's not like football (soccer) over here where everybody suddenly gets tribal and starts hurling abuse just because they don't support a certain team/player.

The biggest cheer of the evening was for Priaulx though. Everybody was rooting for him as he came from behind to beat Mattias Ekstrom in the quarter-finals. Priaulx was clearly chuffed to bits and it was great to see.

technically that williams has this years front nose. it'll be just as ugly as the beemer when the full body kit is plugged in.

the mclaren will be the same once they brave a rear wing too.

  • RockingCopseCorner (aka Mike)15/12/2008 at 15:15

    Really, doh

There was me thinking that was Williams as they will be next year!

I'm dreading the McLaren, no matter how they launch it with a 'twist' it's gonna look like the love child of a Force India and a Big Mac - Horrible!

  • me15/12/2008 at 15:23

I’m dreading the McLaren, no matter how they launch it with a ‘twist’ it’s gonna look like the love child of a Force India and a Big Mac - Horrible!

the williams should look the best of the bunch if they retain the darker colour scheme. mclaren may suffer more than most with reflective paint.

minardi's paint scheme by comparison would have made for a lovely '09 spec car.

  • RockingCopseCorner (aka Mike)15/12/2008 at 15:40

Why is it though Williams consistently produce the best looking cars each year? Other teams should take note! Doesn't matter they came nowhere this year, they had the best looking car hands down! Top teams should take note

I'm getting images of that old minardi looking like some expermental aircraft with those paint lines and the new shape cars.

Imagine the old March/Leyton house colour schemes with the new cars...buggly ugly as my g/f would say

On another note my band practices 2 buildings down from Honda in Brackley ('Bumblebee's Playhouse' for locals on here - I've even served Mr Fry in Barclay's!) and usually you see lights on etc even on Sunday nights. Last night the place looked deserted, not even the secruity gate looked manned, maybe a sly chance to steal a F1 team there!!

Kinda ironic when you pull into Brackley they've still got that huge inflatable 'Earth Dreams' ballon/advert on the entrance. They have recently put up a Berlin style wall around the whole factory in the past few weeks. Maybe they're trying to stop Jenson and Brawn escaping to a new team - or perhaps droves of journalists breaking in for a scoop!

    The Algarve looks pretty:

Shame that they have a new testing track just as in season testing gets banned. I am sure their bank manager will be pleased. Of course now Bernie can convince them and Jerez to apply for races to justify their existence and he can beat other tracks over the head with the increased demand.

I've owned Lotuii before. Had an Elan Sprint for several years as a mobile restoration project and also an Elise for a year.

The one I'm looking at has already had a chassis replacement with a galvanised chassis so that will last. Bodywork looked immaculate and the engine eith a quick fingertip check was clean and tidy.

“Another spectacular idea is to close the East Midlands Airport, which is located next to the circuit. This will stop any interference with flights and will mean that the airport facilities will be available for the race”

I don't like to resort to logic but surely closing the airport will interfere with flights rather than stop any interference.

I doubt it is remotely feasible as the airport has contracts with airlines who in turn have contracts with suppliers, travel agents etc. In addition to all thos peopl be recompensed for the loss of business you have all the people who own and operate shops, cafes, car hire etc atethe airport.

That is without the knock on effect to airports where flights travel to and from and the fact that planes are going to be in the wrong place for th next day. It also affects anyone who has already booked flights.

would a seat go to loeb?

  • Steven Roy15/12/2008 at 20:00

would a seat go to loeb?

I would have thought that they would keep Loeb in the WRC and give him a year to prepare if they were thinking of running him in F1.

Williams' test team members looking for new jobs? Test team to be disbanded and the race team to take over all testing.

    Rumour mill pointing that way.

Williams’ test team members looking for new jobs? Test team to be disbanded and the race team to take over all testing.

makes sense. no point in keeping them on board if they're only needed when the racing is all done with.

i've said it before, but the '09 and '10 regulations are stupid and short-sighted beyond all comparison.

  • Jon Waldock15/12/2008 at 20:09

For those Mac users out there: OS X update is out today and I'm reading a lot of people are having issues through Software Update through their machines (incomplete files). Seems it would be safer to get your update direct from the Apple site when and if you decide to update.

I'm going with the Combo Update which never gives me issues

    http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_6_Combo_Update

    5.6 is out already?

Yup, today. Some multi finger track pad gestures added I think, plus the usual stability updates.

Set off tomorrow, get to Donnington for around May 2010, realise its been cancelled, go back home for about May 2012 (I'll be fitter), realise its been back at Donnigton, go back there for June 2013, realised I missed the 2013 British GP (won by Sebastian Vettel, his 6th win of the season), carry on walking for the 2015 Portugese GP, only to realise Moroccan pirates have destroyed the circuit and walk home for the 2017 British GP to be held in a new track in Ipswich, realise F1 was went bankrupt and everyone likes oval racing.

Mind you - this is when I have to ask to whom you are referring?

Oooo - what about who you'd replace on TG, and with whom?

The underground is good for the immune system… if you survive it

the underground is not good for my nerves ;) it seriouslt isn't. yesterday we had to go 17stops from one side of London to the other... 17 cramped stops too many for me.

You got a reasonable far to london then…

we have a family card travel thing... and in total it cost us something like £29 for all train travel... but it was worth it :D

Absolutely, although if the link posted earlier is to be believed, the Morris Marina that they set fire to was a recently restored example that Top Gear purchased saying it was for a tribute show. That's not so funny, but on the other hand, what did the vendor expect based on previous shows?

Plato as seen with Bill and Ted, or someone else?

Actually, the lack of 'female' is one thing that consistently p-s me off about TG... just a whole genders viewpoint completely missing!

(something that means Christine is a particularly welcome addition to all things F1 :-) )

i found something out the other day... the top gear audience must have an equal percentage of guys and girls. So i suppose they try... but yeah it would be good to have a woman's pov on the show, then again it would be totally different then wouldn't it? i'm not sure it would totally work...

Crash.net Poll of F1's biggest gaffe of 2008.

-Raikkonen crashing into the back of Sutil in Monaco

-Hamilton crashing into Raikkonen in the Montreal pit-lane

-Massa spinning five times in the rain at Silverstone

-Raikkonen crashing away victory and his title hopes at Spa

-Massa dragging his re-fuelling rig with him in Singapore

-Coulthard's first corner exit in final race of his F1 career

-Hamilton letting Vettel slip past in closing laps in Brazil

-Ferrari celebrating Massa title win too early at Interlagos

    tis okay, apparently everybody lives in london, and therefore a train from the city to the venue is perfectly convenient. {me - 135 comments ago}

It's convenient for me, and I'm from the north. The problem is for people with no direct link to Derby or Sheffield. They're going to have a nightmare trying to use mass transit to get to Donington.

I think they're hoping they'll catch the bus. But some disabled people can't use buses either and rely on people giving them lifts in cars. They will have a major accessibility problem.

Disabled visitors will probably be allowed to drive all the way in - otherwise there would be a clear case for a discrimination suit.

    Does this mean that sidepodcast is read by those who always (used to) end up in the kitchen (or on the stairs, lol) at parties? {littlepurplegoth - 83 comments ago}

I usually end up in the living room, tucked up with one of my guest's books with my fingers in my ears, unless it's a small party. Does that count?

  • Alianora La Canta15/12/2008 at 23:49

not in vogue any more sadly. apparently all trains leave from london, and to hell with every one else.

    so says grandprix.com anyhow.

Evidently Joe Saward hasn't seen this week's timetable. East Midlands Parkway is supposed to be on the Nottingham-London route, which means there will be two trains per hour going there from Sheffield (one starting at Liverpool Lime Street and the other from Warrington Central). One ends in London but the other ends in Norwich.

Hopefully this won't lead to too many confused people singing adapted versions of "Oh, Mr. Porter" come race day.

  • Steven Roy15/12/2008 at 23:56

    although i say that….its only 15th December….plenty more time for the FIA to take Hamiltons championship away {Jon Waldock - 14 comments ago}

They can't. Once the WMSC ratifies the championship (which has to be done before the FIA Gala, because all FIA championships must be ratified before the trophies are given away), no result within them can be changed, even if someone has complete proof that Rob the Window-Cleaner should have won because he completed all the race distances before any of the other drivers even got round the first corner each time.

Thank goodness for statutes of limitations!

I really, really want it to succeed. It would be a fantastic honour for my county and its next-door neighbour to have an event of that stature run well on its soil. I just think they're shooting themselves in the foot to some extent on this point, even if I can see why they're doing it.

Good point. The DDA is pretty strict, and I'm not 100% convinced that "Oops, we didn't have enough parking" would sway the court. I'm worried that, "Oops, we had no parking at all" might.

I think charades could be made to work that way quite easily.

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:26

Ah come on, it’s not that bad

    gah!

    no

  • Andy Taylor16/12/2008 at 00:26

A referal to ISIHAC may be in order if you are going to insist on charades….

Reminding us what Lionel Blair used to do for Christopher Biggins while Una Stubbs watched? :)

  • lou16/12/2008 at 00:26

    ok

wow i was expecting you to say no :)

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:29

wow i was expecting you to say no

    i won't catch fire drawing.

  • Andy Taylor16/12/2008 at 00:30

Give us a Clue as Humph used to describe it:

"We all recall how film titles were demonstrated in mime against the clock by the grand master of the game, Lionel Blair, who would use just his hands to delight his teams' members. None of use can forget the relish with which he once gave Melvyn Hayes and Christopher Biggins Yanks for two whole minutes."

  • Dom16/12/2008 at 00:30

    i won’t catch fire drawing.

This is a sidepodparty, I wouldn't be so sure... :P

  • Andy Taylor16/12/2008 at 00:31

    I loved that show

Me too, saw them live too.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 00:31

Because the increased competition would send Bibendum over the edge?

Because a panda costum could protest your annonimity at the Autosport show. Hang on that is is a reason why you should dress like a panda. I am hopeless at excuse.

  • littlepurplegoth16/12/2008 at 00:32

Who needs Absinthe when they have sidepodcast comments?

What other 'games' are you planning then?

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:32

What other ‘games’ are you planning then?

i will accept anything that doesn't involve catching fire.

  • Bassano Clapper16/12/2008 at 00:33

Am enjoying the Season Strokes comic strips on Drop.io

    Thanks to the owner/uploader

how do you explain to the man on the gate you came to a trade show (for cars) dressed as a giant panda?

  • Bassano Clapper16/12/2008 at 00:34

how do you explain to the man on the gate you came to a trade show (for cars) dressed as a giant panda?

Who says you have to explain it?

lol you'd catch fire if you were in a panda suit? do you have naked flames in that room? ;)

hmmm... might have to resort to odd shaped dice and bits of paper, and a large collection of books that I may or may not have...

    (LPG whistles)

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 00:35

how do you explain to the man on the gate you came to a trade show (for cars) dressed as a giant panda?

You tell him you are th Stig in disguise or you leave Christine to explain it. Besides I am sure there is no condition of purchase of tickets that says you can't wear a panda suit.

  • Dom16/12/2008 at 00:36

i will accept anything that doesn’t involve catching fire.

That's most of my ideas out the window... :P

  • lou16/12/2008 at 00:36

how do you explain to the man on the gate you came to a trade show (for cars) dressed as a giant panda?

haha, as long as you have your ticket, i'm not sure he would care.

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:37

haha, as long as you have your ticket, i’m not sure he would care.

what the heck do i do if he does mind?

  • Bassano Clapper16/12/2008 at 00:38

what the heck do i do if he does mind?

You could always change when you get inside

  • lou16/12/2008 at 00:38

    no, hot studio lights:

ah i see. you could dress in a racing suit... that won't catch fire :P

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:38

    actually yes:

    no, hot studio lights:

I worked for a company years ago and quite a few videos were mad while the plant was in production. It is amazing how much damage a light like that can do when it has been on for a couple of hours before it hits someone on the back of the head because someone knocked over the 15 foot high pole it was on.

  • littlepurplegoth16/12/2008 at 00:38

what the heck do i do if he does mind?

*That* is when you tell him you are The Stig incognito

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:39

You could always change when you get inside

    ok, what about the karting?

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 00:39

    ok, what about the karting?

He will have a crash helmet on for that

  • Bassano Clapper16/12/2008 at 00:39

    ok, what about the karting?

    The Stig outfit

  • lou16/12/2008 at 00:40

    ok, what about the karting?

you'll have t change into a race suit anyway right?

so it wont matter... you could always get a panda livery on your helmet ;)

  • Bassano Clapper16/12/2008 at 00:40

Ah come on, it’s not that bad

Why does the Panda have a Rhino's horn?

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 00:41

If the panda costume isn't an option you could dress like Batman.

  • Bassano Clapper16/12/2008 at 00:41

… you could always get a panda livery on your helmet

    I'd like to see that

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:41

Why does the Panda have a Rhino’s horn?

    and a sailors suit?

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:41

If the panda costume isn’t an option you could dress like Batman.

    why???

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 00:44

    why???

Less of a fire risk. Not so hot to wear and still protects your anonimity

  • Dom16/12/2008 at 00:44

    why???

Because batman conceals his identity too.

  • lou16/12/2008 at 00:45

If the panda costume isn’t an option you could dress like Batman.

or you could dress up as Bibendum?

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:45

Because batman conceals his identity too.

not very well though. you can see most of his face.

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:45

or you could dress up as Bibendum?

    oh god

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 00:46

    I’d like to see that

I searched for panda crash helmet and this was the best I could get. I think the pandas would like it but not for the intended reason

If you are going to go down this route, poor Me would have to bribe several others into wearing matching outfits...

... and then you'd all end up looking like a dodgy stag party...

On which note - did anyone see the bit in the sunday torygraph where Bernie says that he won't be getting divorced?

  • me16/12/2008 at 00:57

… and then you’d all end up looking like a dodgy stag party…

on that note, i have to go to sleep! i may log on in the morning, or i might be to frightened.

    'night Me

  • littlepurplegoth16/12/2008 at 01:00

Well - I was thinking more along the lines of 'I'll do anything you like, you can have what you like, live whereever you want to, just don't divorce me and take away my little motor cars.......'

I'm going to sleep now, because if I don't I'll be attempting to make cake in the morning when I'm not safe around ovens...

Oh - nihtg Me... as well

  • lou16/12/2008 at 01:01

hehe both Christine and 'me' forgot. Obviously this isn't working too well ;) i always say the next day starts when you wake up anyway :)

Just noticed the header has changed

ah cool, :D tis nice, not a fav though i don't think.

That’s the one you used before, right?

I think it looks similar to one they have had before.. there has been a BMW, not sure if it's the same though.

  • Steven Roy16/12/2008 at 01:39

I don't know if it was used before but I quite like it.

  • Journeyer16/12/2008 at 02:01

    You not got the beemer?

Nope. Not even ctrl+f5 does it for me.

To see it, I used brute force, by viewing the image URL directly. Is this the beemer in sepia?

hehe both Christine and ‘me’ forgot. Obviously this isn’t working too well i always say the next day starts when you wake up anyway

tis true. :) franck isn't enough anymore, what a shame. :P

  • me16/12/2008 at 10:16

nope, slightly different. 6 used in total, we'll review them all and have a poll next week :)

If me brings his own helmet, avoiding identification in the karting should be fairly simple. Before that might be an issue, unless he wants to wear an absolutely massive and ridiculous wig-and-makeup combination. Or a mask.
