It's the weekend, and also Carl Edwards birthday today. He's a NASCAR driver, I know, but we seem to be branching out all the time, so that shouldn't worry you. Here are some of the other things we're talking about:

  • We've put up an impromptu podcast, taking the moderately time-sensitive interview we did with Gavin for Sidepodradio. As he mentions some 'recent' blog posts, we thought it wouldn't be fair to leave it until the revised date in September. Therefore, enjoy Gavin's thoughts on blogging, and let us know if you'd like to take part.
  • RG has set up a wiki page with information about your Last.fm profiles. If you're a user of the music-sharing site, then update the page and let us know where to find you. We are still having the Last.fm vs. Spotify discussion as well, so if you have thoughts on that, please chime in.
  • We've been having lots of fun over the last couple of days with various methods of live streaming. If you're near a computer, it's worth having the playground page open, as you never know when someone is going to go live. Equally, let us know if you've got a live stream that could be included on there.

That'll do it for now. Lovely Saturday is here, so let us know what you're up to as ever. I will see you in the comments.

Surely its Bonjour Nouveau Tous les jours

Could be complicated if this were French.

So final thoughts on the live thing... I think that ustream is best except for the adverts.

Justin.tv is poor but the archive works well

    and Qik is just madness!

Interestingly there is an option on ustream which says, "when on pc use high quality encoder" do you think that's higher than we've seen yet or is the mac always using that?

  • startledbunny14/08/2009 at 23:09

    Have you looked at Stickam?

    you need this:

    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/

it's what we use. it's pc only, but it'll give you the best encoding quality because it doesn't use flash. it is however, a bugger to set up.

  • startledbunny14/08/2009 at 23:16

How many different video uploading platforms are there?

Many. There used to be one called Operator 11, where you could switch to other users with webcams, and make a complete show. Gone by the wayside now.

Luckily my parents have retired in part to the NSW south coast. A little less risky

  • Paul15/08/2009 at 00:33

yes, I am a firefighter, so I am stuck. I cannot evacuate, then afterwards have to return to my island and to damage assessments.

Your island? You aren't secretly Richard Branson are you?

Not even close. I work for Sanibel Fire/Rescue. I call it my island, but can't afford to live on it. But it's a great place to biking and running

A 6.5 ft. gator got a landscappers hand, she kicked it until it let go and we showed up, bandaged her up and sent her to the hospital, apparently gator mouths are full of bacteria.

Yeah, it embarrasses me that we are put in that light. The west coast of Florida has some very nice small towns that concentrate on fishing and tourism. Sanibel is very sedate...and expensive. In the summer though, it's hot... and cheap.

You can't choose your neighbors. I was sure there was still some great spots around there. Shame the retirees have pushed up real estate so much though. It's happening on the coast here too.

  • Joe in Fla15/08/2009 at 00:49

    Nasty critters

One of the attacks a couple years ago, was a fatality. A landscapper was near the edge of a lake and a 12ft. gator came out of the water and got her. She eventually died because of the bacteria. The reason I say this is because our Maintenance man at my fire department went home for lunch and she was next door. He went into the water and fought the gator for her and won, though the damage had been done. A 65 year old diabetic was a hero that day. I was pissed he did not get enough recognition for his actions.

real estate is dirt cheap right now, there are alot of foreclosures.

That really takes some guts. Those things are frightening up close. I think 2 or 3 people died here in the lats year from croc attaks. To dive in and fight one off - amazing

I agree, Jimmy will always have my respect. Sanibel cops shot at the gator about 25 times as it was coming back at the crew working on the woman and eventually killed it.

RG has set up a wiki page with information about your Last.fm profiles. If you're a user of the music-sharing site, then update the page and let us know where to find you. We are still having the Last.fm vs. Spotify discussion as well, so if you have thoughts on that, please chime in.

On last.fm I actually deleted my account, set up another and deleted it. I got frustrated with the syncing with the ipod. Not that I have anything against the site and I will probably rejoin if they improve the scrobbler.

ah I wondered if they could have played the song.

Is the song in your library? Ah you say it's not on your machine. Are you sure the file isn't named wrongly and isn't in iTunes under a different song name?

It might be worth doing a file search in your music library folder for that file name.

  • Sebastian (Birmingham, UK)15/08/2009 at 10:34

I have just visited the Sidepodcast Diaries page to check I had not missed any new entries and started the last one to double-check it was one I had seen before (it was).

I have noticed that for the more recent diaries, the picture is reversed; note the picture on the wall is back-to-front compared to how we used to see it in the live podcast shows. I e-mailed Christine (earlier this year) who confirmed this to be the case and something to do with the camera.

However, in the "Judging by Character", entry, in which the circuit names are drawn for the Character Cup, the writing appears not to be in reverse. Therefore Christine must have written them out in backwards hand-writing to make them appear correctly!

    Did anyone else notice this?

  • Jon Waldock15/08/2009 at 10:37

    Did anyone else notice this?

Wow, you certainly are eager eyed. I can't say i did notice that, but am impressed that you did :D

  • Amy15/08/2009 at 10:39

Hmm step 2 in the saga, iTunes was just closed by Data Execution Prevention as Windows decided it was a security risk.

  • Alex Andronov15/08/2009 at 10:54

    Did anyone else notice this?

    Did anyone else notice this?

Ah! My guess, and I'm not sure of the facts here is that Christine is recording using software the mirrors the image. Video on screen is always difficult because we are used to mirrors reversing our image which means when cameras face us and show us playback we get confused.

For example last night when pointing at the camera I got quite confused because when my hand went left it appeared to go right. I was a bit tired usually I'm quite good with fooling my brain.

A lot of video software now has a mirror function so it can show you back the reversed image you're used to. However that wouldn't work for the one where Christine had to show us all the text she pulled out of the hat. So I'm guessing she turned the feature off that week.

  • Alex Andronov15/08/2009 at 11:00

Hmm step 2 in the saga, iTunes was just closed by Data Execution Prevention as Windows decided it was a security risk.

maybe a reboot is in order?

So I’m guessing she turned the feature off that week.

The picture (on the wall) is still back to front and the writing isn't. The wedding ring is on the wrong hand and Christine appears to be using the scissors with her left hand.

hehe do they have motorway road works in NZ?

I assume so! All of the roadworks I have ever driven through were not on the motorways but on the usual 2-lane state highway system, in which case they use the little dudes with the stop and go signs :D

  • Alex Andronov15/08/2009 at 13:19

Maybe he doesnt want to criticize one of his paymasters.... sems silly to me. He should have chosen a different photo though, i didn't really like that one.

Afternoon all? How's your weekend going?

Friday beers went crazy - we started with Hungarian Sausage and Palinka, then went to a beer garden which ended at 8pm with a bottle of champagne to celebrate a friend who told us officially that she was married. Then we went to a Japanese restaurant where we had some amazing sushi and a bottle of sake. Got home at 4am, so I'm a little tired today ;)

  • Amy15/08/2009 at 15:19

Theres nothing worse than thinking you are home alone and coming out of the bathroom to find SOMEONE STANDING ON THE STAIRS IN THE DARK.

My flatmate is home early and I just aged 15 years in one second.

    In the dark though?

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 15:25

Afternoon all? How's your weekend going?

Pretty relaxed. Had a "comedy night" with my sister yesterday (since neither of us have a lot of money right now). Fish&Chips + beer + Doritos&dips along with Eddie Izzard and Ross Noble DVDs.

Have hoovered vacuumed the car and I've got to change the wing mirrors a little later, before heading back to Dad's to feed cats. Will stay there tonight as it is easier to feed 'em in the morning and vanish, than it is to come back here then wake up in the morning and go over again.

I had stillness, then loud Mr C laughing, then stillness, then Alex and Christine sounding really distant so unable to hear them... and then stillnesss

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 18:40

I still like it because the replays run fine :D

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 18:44

ooh my one is not that bad, but then again I had 2xqik, ustream and jtv all going fine. Maybe I have Finnish internet tonight.

Mine were okay earlier, when I had three running (and briefly yours too). I had to stop the Sidepodcast Qik at that point too because it was so far behind the others.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 18:45

But I'm impressed that this is possible. And I want more money so I can do it.

  • Alex Andronov15/08/2009 at 18:55

  • Amy15/08/2009 at 18:57

so does anyone know of any Cool Stuff available for UK users of Orange? :-)

It has been so long since I last looked at their website.. they've got Stuff on there which looks good, and a free upgrade to boot. I have this week off. I can feel a visit to an Orange store coming on.

  • Amy15/08/2009 at 19:28

So, Federer and Nadal are both out in Montreal so if Murray wins his next match, he will overtake Nadal as number 2 in the world. THIS CANNOT HAPPEN.

And so I shall go to sleep because oops, its 5.30am and I have a race track to visit tomorrow!

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 19:30

And so I shall go to sleep because oops, its 5.30am and I have a race track to visit tomorrow!

Craziness, staying up to that time! Night.

I am going to go as well because I have cats to feed and washing to hang up, wing mirrors to fix, etc...

  • Lukeh15/08/2009 at 19:31

Well, it wasn't quite Jurassic Park, as I had expected. Very good though. The battery ran out on the G1, and we only have a car charger, so I'm not sure whether the video from there worked or not. I think Alex is dropioing something.

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 20:00

We were under a lot of trees. It's a great idea but limited by 3G. Sadly, we can't control the outside!

    Who knew?

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 20:38

Hello again. I have relocated to Dad's for the night while he's away. Is it wrong that while I have Sky and his massive stack of DVD films, I'm watching the Radical UK Cup on MotorsTV?

  • RG15/08/2009 at 20:39

    London, apparently.

Apparantly, we have one on the quayside.

My important question is where, I've been down it billions of times and never seen it.

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 20:40

My important question is where, I've been down it billions of times and never seen it.

I think you can get anything in London

Hello again. I have relocated to Dad's for the night while he's away. Is it wrong that while I have Sky and his massive stack of DVD films, I'm watching the Radical UK Cup on MotorsTV?

Go for it... DVD's are timeless.. The radical cup is of the moment!

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 20:40

Apparantly, we have one on the quayside.

    A Mongolian lamb?

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 20:41

Surely he would notice someone driving round with a foreign sheep on a bike rack.

  • RG15/08/2009 at 20:41

    A Mongolian lamb?

    Probably.

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 20:41

Christine abd Giggles on the same live stream? How am I supposed to cope with that?

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 20:42

Go for it... DVD's are timeless.. The radical cup is of the moment!

This is true. Although it does suck, I've never seen it before and that's good enough for me. I am also amused at the complete lack of spectators at Castle Combe. I've been there - once. Place was packed for historic touring/sportscars. Seems they don't like these things.

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 20:42

Surely he would notice someone driving round with a foreign sheep on a bike rack.

Not the mobile sort... the fixed kind!

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 20:43

Christine abd Giggles on the same live stream? How am I supposed to cope with that?

Recordings are in the playground / live streaming place/s

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 20:44

Recordings are in the playground / live streaming place/s

I just found them. I haven't caught up on the comments yet

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 20:46

MrsC are their any android apps you think are 'must have'?

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 21:19

I guess the one thing everyone learned fro today's live streaming is if the motorway spilts into a two lane section and a one lane section you always take the two lane section as there is a lot less chance of it getting blocked. I have a great deal of experiece on sitting in a one lane section watching the other two lanes moving.

  • Jeremy15/08/2009 at 21:20

    You could try

what's my best angle? The discount? The value propostiton?

I have less than 5 hours sleep. Forgive me if I'm not my best today. I will attempt to channel 23 year old New Zealand girl lving in Melbourne.

Now you're just asking me to show off!

Ah, there was a lot of it going on last night too, from Alex.

  • Christine15/08/2009 at 21:36

MrsC are their any android apps you think are 'must have'?

Ooh, I can tell you the ones I have.

I just discovered Locale which is awesome. I also have Qik, obviously. I downloaded Loquacious for Twitter, plus the last.fm app. A couple of games, a notepad for keeping short notes.

My G1 has run out of battery, but I can give you a full rundown with names later, if you're interested.

What have you got so far?

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 21:36

Ah, there was a lot of it going on last night too, from Alex.

Today took it to a whole new leval!

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 21:36

Ah, there was a lot of it going on last night too, from Alex.

I saw those. Today Christine and Mr C were at Alex's house and all of them are streaming. Amy appears to be streaming 3 of their streams back again but I haven't got to it yet

  • Jeremy15/08/2009 at 21:38

My G1 has run out of battery, but I can give you a full rundown with names later, if you're interested.

Leave it in the car with the ignition set to 'accessories'?

This week has blown my mind! Level 11?

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 21:39

All of Giggles's qik streams play twice when you run the replays. When the timer bar gets to 50% the video replays for the other 50%

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 21:39

What have you got so far?

ShopSavvy... The Barcode fun has just begun!

Skype lite. I am not a fan, but i need it.

    Qik... i dare'nt not!

I have a twitter thing built in as well...

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 21:40

Giggles and MrsC on the same sofa. And the legendary owl from giggles shelf made an appearance too! :D

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 21:52

New pepsi max looks very strange.

Although to be fair the new pepsi logo makes it hard to get anything looking normal

What kind of moron changed the Pepis logo? Are they insane? They have a logo that is known and instantly recognised all over the world. Presumably some management consultant decided it needed to be modernised.

  • Jeremy15/08/2009 at 21:53

How come telstra havent called it an iphone NextG?

We have a Telco called '3' (Hutchison Telecoms, joining with Vodafone now)

They pushed 3G very hard over here when it was all new.

They now have the iPhone, so our nerdy sayings confuse people even more.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 21:53

I am catching up with Google Reader (really slowly).

Great comment to one of Joe Saward's posts, the one about MS no longer racing, I have no idea if it has been posted here yet:

Last week I purchased a flight, 4 nights Milan hotel stay & grandstand tickets for Monza; such was my enthusiasm to see Michael race one last time. Unfortunately it’s not happening but the worst that’s happened is I’ve got 5 days in Milan & a greap GP to attend. I think I’ll deal with it ok.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 21:54

What kind of moron changed the Pepis logo? Are they insane? They have a logo that is known and instantly recognised all over the world. Presumably some management consultant decided it needed to be modernised.

I saw that on some N-word races I watched before the proper stuff started. Looks terrible on a trackside billboard. I'm sure it won't be long before it reaches here..

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 21:56

We have a Telco called '3' (Hutchison Telecoms, joining with Vodafone now)

Yeah im with them over here. The people in the shop didnt know what they were doing so i am now on a very cheap deal. :D

  • Jeremy15/08/2009 at 21:57

How come telstra havent called it an iphone NextG?

As if they are ever touching our brand! I don't think so Sol. Why don't you stick to your knitting huh?

That's right, you came begging like everyone else.

It reminds me of when Coke decided it was a good idea to change there cola so that it was more like Pepsi. That worked really well. Right up to the point when they put it on the market and the Coke drinkers revolted en masse.

Well done. Let me know if you ever find a telco with knowledgeable staff. There must be some somewhere in the world?

  • Jeremy15/08/2009 at 22:01

I luv u all, but I'm not getting stuck in this loop again. I might have a quick turn in the playground, but then I'm off.

PS. The only good coke, is real coke. :P

  • Nick15/08/2009 at 22:02

What kind of moron changed the Pepis logo? Are they insane? They have a logo that is known and instantly recognised all over the world. Presumably some management consultant decided it needed to be modernised.

Its bacicly all to do with animation and stuff.

This Pdf was supposidly sectret and got out , and shows how clever the whole thing is http://bunnitude.com/misc/files/pepsi_gravitational_field.pdf

    It cost them $100Million

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 22:05

How could they have thought that was a good idea?

It is absolutely beyond me. Panorama or something similar did a pgram on it and there was a meeting where the board were answering questions from disgruntled Coke drinkers. In answer to a question the CEO said that in taste tests people said they prefered Pepsi so the person who asked the question said that if Coke drinkers prefered the taste of Pepsi surely they would be Pepsi drinkers and he just stood there like it had never occurred to him that people had tried both and chosen Coke.

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 22:05

What a load of marketing guff and poppycock! These guys really are a waste of money!

  • Steven Roy15/08/2009 at 22:10

They paid $100 million to change a logo the have spent billions advertising over the years for a new one that is a section of the old. Nice to see that the recesssion is not affecting some people. I guess the Pepsi board fit into the category described as no brain- no pain.

Pepsi will always be superior to Coke no matter what they try.

    Contraversial! :P

Pepsi will always be superior to Coke no matter what they try.

I bet they get a stack of complaints about this and it ends up costng them a lot more than the $100 million. They will change back within the year.

There is a show on BBC at the moment... and they have 'Pandarama' :D

It was walk on the wild side on BBC1. Stephen Fry doing panda voices means that any panda without his voice would be a disappointment.

Recovering from tonight, then a spot of Qik (mostly videoing cats misbehaving)

Ooh might watch Planes Trains & Automobiles on Apple TV.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 22:48

I am channel-hopping the radio stations on Sky. Someone has done a club version of a Sigur Ros track. I think it is Staruflur but I'm useless with associating their track names to the actual songs. At least they had the decency to replace the riff with a synth instead of using the original. I'm surprised that it actually works.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 22:51

Ooh, I know what I was going to ask of the studiers of a couple of months ago, when do you get your results? I get mine on Monday night or Tuesday morning via email.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 22:57

I should answer my own question:

Tomorrow I actually am going to fit those wing mirrors. (damaged before I bought the car - ebay sale, what can i say)

Then I'm going home from here and plan to watch at least one IndyCar race - and blog it - before popping to mum's for a cup of tea and a catch-up. In the evening I don't know what I'm doing yet.

  • Pat W15/08/2009 at 23:03
