Hello everyone! How are you on this fine Sunday? Enjoying the break from F1? No, neither am I. However I have a plan to help us stay happy and smiling on this second Sunday of our holiday. To help on this F1- less day here is a cute little link. Everyone loves baby animals right?

It may be the holidays, but what better time is there to write a mid season report for the drivers? Stitch has given each driver a grade for their efforts this year. Check her posts out, here, here

and here. They’re super!

Being a non Grand Prix weekend (sorry for reminding you again) there aren’t many F1 things to chat about in today’s daily so I have some wonderful, random and arty links to share with you instead.

• Now I know Easter is a long way away, but I stumbled across this lovely blog yesterday and this amazing post on how to make some rather special easter egg cupcakes. I may make some today, get some practice in.

• We all love exposure shots, they have a beautiful way of capturing chaos and motion like no other technique. These shots are just as wonderful.

• Each year I love seeing what amazing things people come up with at the Red Bull Flugtag event. Here are some classics from this year.

• Check out these propaganda style posters Aaron Wood designed for social networking sites. How brilliant.

• Last week I pointed out some examples of how you can make art from anything, well here is another. Artwork created with a typewriter! Well they’ve got to be useful for something these days.

• My last treat for you all is very special. The internet is a brilliant place – where else could you make music by drawing lines? Try it and see if you find it as addictive as I do.

That’s about it for today everyone, hugs for you all.

True - it's just a shame they didn't plan it like that originally. This just makes the series and its organisers look a bit foolish - again.

true. but they could plan to fire rockets out of their backsides in 2012 and it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference if we can't watch it.

In all fairness, that was down to the TV company, not the series. Also just think, if you do decide to go down the Sky route for F1, it gets you the IndyCar coverage too

    ;)

  • Mr C13/08/2011 at 23:46

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/08/2011 at 23:47

but they chose the tv company. do they have plans to fix it for 2012?

They didn't. They TV company they were with merged with NBC at the start of the year and NBC said "no" to any online coverage of any of the Versus products.

  • Bert13/08/2011 at 23:48

The TV deal was signed by a guy with as much business sense as a lemon and the series pretty much had no choices left.

    Everyone else bailed on them.

and the result is, we, an audience from 2010 bailed on them.

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/08/2011 at 23:55

and the result is, we, an audience from 2010 bailed on them.

Exactly - the downward cycle goes on. Encouragingly though the audience figures so far this year are up quite considerably, but that still makes for small numbers.

May I use the collective knowledge about web design on SPC? I'm changing the theme of my blog, and I'd like to have opinions on it:

    http://guille2306-testing.blogspot.com/

There are still some rough edges, but the basic idea (format and colours) is there. For reference, this is the old theme:

nice. i think sometimes a three-pane layout can look more cluttered over main/sidebar. i like the green links and headers.

Thanks. In principle I agree on the three-pane, but I also don't like very long sidebars. The idea is to have navigation on the left, social/links/etc. on the right.

The support for a top navigation menu is very weak on blogger, so I had to compromise a bit. The template is wider to compensate

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Which driver secured his first podium on this day in '94, after being drafted in to replace an injured teammate?

You need to move to Finland or somewhere they have internet service for more than 2 days at a time.

I ran out of internet yesterday and assumed I had a tech problem. This morning I awoke with the realisation that my internet payment was due and because it had not been made they had cut me off. The reason it had not been made was because I was offered a free month as compensation for last month's problems. One phone call proved I had been correct and the guy reading the notes said that I had been offered £20 off a dongle which I had not.

    I hate ISPs

Since the bunkers would be connected by field Telephone lines as a back up to the radios, or as more secure system, yes they would have the technology for some old-school (dial-up) connections... You might first have to wind up the contracts on the telephone to get a call started, although.

Paper doesn't respond well to wine spillages or sunscreen and fades badly in bright sunshine

  • Mr C14/08/2011 at 14:23

well that's just stupid. I didn't like that either so I turned it off. I don't know that I can turn it off and then still complain about it.

We left a stack of books in NZ for the lady who took over our flat, because she paid us some money for various bits of furniture we couldn't take with us. I doubt she was a Tom Clancy fan though!

I do like data! Plus it's always handy being able to check that your heart is still beating and thus you're still alive.

I am also pondering going along to the Nike+ run club when it starts here in a couple of weeks. I generally don't like other people but you get a free t-shirt and I'm easily bribed by things like that.

they have different groups that run at different paces and the slowest one is about the pace I run at now so I'm not too scared that everyone will be better than me. My few friends in Melbourne all seem to be developing a recent obsession with leaving Melbourne so I thought meeting some new people might be nice. I'm generally not good at meeting new people though, I'm good at going to situations where I should be able to meet new people and then not talking to any of them :)

I demonstrated the text size thing to my mum and she said it would have been perfect for my nana because once she stopped being able to read small print she spent the rest of her life being rather bored. The only real issue is none of the menus or anything get any bigger, it's just the books themselves.

Dreadful story I heard about Indy Light's Stefan Wilson last night. Apparently the team is so broke, they're using tyres from a previous race at Iowa.

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/08/2011 at 17:22

Wilson has in just pulled into the pits to finish early. Apparently, they just needed the car to run in the early laps just to count as an entry. No real intention to compete. Sad, just sad.

I hate when that happens. If they can't afford to race they should not be allowed an entry

Start and park in IndyCar, even the feeder series, is something I didn't expect to see given the upswing I thought they were on.

It's a steady rain. Nothing heavy, but no signs of letting up. Nationwide does have rain tires. They were available yesterday and it was covered during the show. They have used them in the past, at Montréal.

    Conway hits Rahal. Both out.

It's only in the mid 60's F here, so it's cooler than normal and cooler than the past few days.

Rahal has been a magnet for spinning cars this year.

I think they showed stuff about it from space on the Richard hammond programs a few weeks back. it looks absolutely stunning, like the earth just having this big force field!

2 days of lectures and seminars. one production day and 2 workshop/ tutorial/ production days. I'm marked on the projects... which i do 24/7 can't do a shoot in a wood when i'm at uni, so we get days to go away and do shoots/ go in the darkroom/ studios/ on location.. it's very fun. lots of hard work tho. up and working by 9 and finish before i go to bed. Sketchbooks are intensive.

god i miss being at uni.

I've heard so many things about that game. It's a real cult favourite!

It rocketed into popularity but rightly so, such a simple game in theory but it's just horribly addictive but so creative. It reminds me of being a lot younger and just playing with lego, but in a game.

I chop down trees, get some wood, make a crappy house, make a crappy axe, and then get absolutely destroyed when it gets to night time ans zombies and creepers and allsorts of things come out :D

It's SUCH a good game, especially when it's not even a set game... i mean, everytime you play it's your little world, not a world set for you to follow.

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 20:40

Scheckter and TK off. Big crash

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 20:40

oh no. TK. Said he was ok, though.

  • lou14/08/2011 at 20:40

Are you going to make the egg shell cupcakes in the daily lou?

not tonight, i don't have another recipe i want to do that will use up the other eggs that are needed to create all 12 cupcake/egg things.

    mmmmm baileys. and cupcakes.

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 20:43

TK and Scheckter Zonta'd Marco then met on the other side like they didn't know the other was there

Sub for Justin Wilson not having luck either.

I've never considered them to normally taste of vanilla, normal cupcakes taste of... well, cupcake.

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 20:45

I just saw that! hehehe! They just said no one was in there.

  • lou14/08/2011 at 20:46

I've never considered them to normally taste of vanilla, normal cupcakes taste of... well, cupcake.

vanilla is usually used for 'plain' cupcakes and cakes.. it gives it it's flavour. a victoria sponge recipe for example uses vanilla. Not sure i've make a 'plain' cupcake without putting vanilla essence in it :)

    Noooo :(

I made him a nice drawing to win and everything

    Dear Lord.

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 20:50

Maybe he was thinking how much he loved Goodwood and was distracted for a second. He and Sato touched wheels and he was in the wall. He's fine, but done.

I can't understand how that happened. I want a better view of that. At the first re-start with Sato behind him I was worried something like this would happen but Dario just disappeared that time

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 20:52

booo hooo, seeing Dario's car on The Hook, just hanging there. :'(

  • Lukeh14/08/2011 at 20:52

I can't understand how that happened. I want a better view of that. At the first re-start with Sato behind him I was worried something like this would happen but Dario just disappeared that time

    I suppose #blamesato has a similar ring to #blamesutil

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 20:57

Maybe Sato was trying to get some of Dario's awesomeness to rub off.

I've never seen him at a loss for words. He blames Sato. What do you guys think? I can't tell and I'm not sure it was Sato's fault...but that seems wrong to say. :)

I've never seen him at a loss for words. He blames Sato. What do you guys think? I can't tell and I'm not sure it was Sato's fault...but that seems wrong to say. :)

From the replays I saw when I was hurriedly switching over from the golf, I'd say Dario thought he was a car length ahead of Sato, turned in and collided. So, Dario's fault.

Impossible to say from the stream I have. I need a better picture to judge. In single file re-starts everyone has to accommodate the leader but with the double file re-starts the second guy can inconvenience the leaded by getting very close to him. I don't understand why they were so close together

They only have 5 laps to go. By the time they get a couple of warm up laps and they check track conditions all they will get is green white checker. Or more likely green yellow yellow

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 21:58

There's the man of the hour, Brian Barnhart.

Admits it was the wrong call to restart the race. No track officials they spoke to said the surface had changed. Lack of communication from the drivers up to race control.

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 21:58

So everyone on the internet knew none of the drivers thought ot was safe but Barnhart didn't?

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 21:59

How can the race control people be on such a different planet than the drivers? Good to see Barnhardt admit fault. I think Power might get off with some community service or something.

  • Bert14/08/2011 at 22:00

So everyone on the internet knew none of the drivers thought ot was safe but Barnhart didn't?

Exactly. To that I would add that many people in the stands also knew, since they have 50$ radio scanners and can listen in to the car-to-pit communication. I expect to see replays of this on failblog shortly!

The race wasn't great apart from Dario's drive. He seemed to have a bigger engine than anyone else. The officiating and making the rules up to save their butts at the end was not so good

  • Pat W14/08/2011 at 22:39

seems i missed an eventful indycar race.

was it awful or awfully brilliant?

    It was jawdroppingly stupid.

Actually the first half was boring with Dario lapping the field, then it got interesting and we had a race, which was spoiled and didn't really get going properly because of rain, then a stupid decision which caused a lot of damage. They are still arguing over who finished where.

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 22:41

Unlike F1 if a race is stopped Indycar do not count back. They declare the race order at the time of the stoppage. At the stoppage Servia was leading and Dixon second but that order existed because of a bad, bad re-start call by the officials which resulted in several cars hitting the walls as they came up to the start line for the re-start so they decided to call the result as it was before the re-start.

But as far as I've been able to tell from people talking about it (and I don't know myself), there is no provision in the rules to take the result prior to the bad call restart. They have to take it at the stoppage, giving Servia the win.

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 22:45

That's what Servia and Dixon said. RHR is saying that he had been told there was a crash before the line so he lifted before he ever started. But then they all would say that

  • Mr C14/08/2011 at 22:46

    just watching this replay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNTNb2-eQUA

they need to fix racing cars to run in the rain, or give up in ovals. regardless of anything else, it looks dry enough to race.

Yep. To be fair I think it was 'the right thing to do' for Race Control go back to before their own bad call. Hopefully there is a discretion clause in the rules.

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 22:47

RHR saying he is glad they didn't make turn one on the re-start because everyone would have crashed

The video doesn't show the context of the restart. All the drivers and teams were saying there was light rain and the track was not ready, no driver or team said it was ok to go but they went anyway.

You can't race in the rain on an oval, ever.

  • Mr C14/08/2011 at 22:50

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 22:54

all the drivers were screaming on the radio that they could not even touch the throttle because it was so wet. I was on my couch, so I don't know.

  • Jeremy14/08/2011 at 22:55

    Jeremy wins

I'd like to thank my mum, and my cake addiction :)

I can eat more cake with icing, than with frosting, before feeling sick :P

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 22:55

    even the onboards look dry?

At the time there was water on some of the onboards I saw. Any rain at all is too much for an oval. All the top 4 teams and all of their drivers were saying they should not go green. The only people who thought it was a good idea were the people who made the call. They didn't know what the drivers o teams had said apparently

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 22:55

RHR had a nice little dig at Servia there.

To him the storyline is Dario and Sato, not that Servia 'thought he led for 20 feet'.

    Ouch.

  • Mr C14/08/2011 at 22:56

all the drivers were screaming on the radio that they could not even touch the throttle because it was so wet. I was on my couch, so I don't know.

the commentator says "it looks a bit moist".

i'm sure it was wet, i just can't see the point of a race metting that can't run in the wet. unless your series is gp2 asia.

That is the third time he has made a comment about 20 feet

  • Pat W14/08/2011 at 22:56

    even the onboards look dry?

Look at the opening 5 seconds, the water on the camera lens. Sorry but you weren't watching the race and this video doesn't show the context of how much rain had fallen up to that point. Frankly they'd taken a lot of risks running under green with the light drizzle they had for many laps.

You can't apply F1 standards to oval racing.

this is what i'm asking for in f1. stuff the drivers, they're biased and can't be trusted, they all have an agenda. the pace car driver should make the call.

  • Kai14/08/2011 at 22:57

At the time there was water on some of the onboards I saw. Any rain at all is too much for an oval.

because the G's at this track are intense, so much so that drivers had trouble catching their breath while driving, which indicates to me that they are on the edge of traction, so if you "just add water"....

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 22:59

this is what i'm asking for in f1. stuff the drivers, they're biased and can't be trusted, they all have an agenda. the pace car driver should make the call.

But ever driver regardless of his situation said the same. This was not Vettel saying stay yellow while Hamilton wants to race. Every driver said it was too dangerous to race and in the end three cars hit the wall before they made the start line

  • Lukeh14/08/2011 at 22:59

But we saw it a Korea (I think)? Vettel, leader: No it's too wet to restart. Hammilton: It's alright, let's go.

As of yet, no driver said that it should have gone green.

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 22:59

agreed. i didn't watch the race, partly because i can't anymore and partly because the series is a joke.

i'm simply arguing that as an observer they look silly for not being able to drive in that. fix the cars, the course, whatever. i don't really mind what, but f1 is going the same way. bit of moisture, let's call the whole thing off.

I agree that F1 is going the same way but they don't race at 220mph on banked ovals with nothing but concrete to hit if it all goes wrong, they have no excuses.

IndyCar is a joke but for different reasons.

i guess so. i saw a tweet or comment earlier that suggested the race will be run tomorrow. that's wimbledon pre-roof days, you can't treat fans like that anymore. no-one has time for delayed racing, just like no-one has time for extended red flags or safety car periods.

i may have a short attention span, but the internet gave me that and soon so will everyone else :)

  • Steven Roy14/08/2011 at 23:09

Interesting that BB keeps saying no-one had said it was a bad decision to go green. Seems like unless someone stands up and screams they don't bother asking since he has not said anyone said it was the right decision

NASCAR is racing tomorrow, now that really is a stupid decision because they are at a road course. They ought to have raced today.

Nothing will ever convince me that racing on an oval in the rain is a good idea, I don't care what your attention span is.

There certainly seems to be a BIG disconnect between the pit-techs and the pit wall. Mikey A. was on TV complaining about going green, BEFORE they went green.

interesting point by BB, that Johnny Rutherford (pace car driver) had nothing to say about the conditions.

  • Pat W14/08/2011 at 23:11

No formal commun was given to a pit observer expressing distress at restart. Thus owners+drivers were talking amongst themselves

So they need to get their communication together.
