Nín hǎo*! It's the first time that I have been invited to write a daily for Sidepodcast.

Great things happened yesterday, mostly Amy-related. She celebrated her birthday and AirAsia Australia got her a wonderful present**, they invited her to the Korean Grand Prix to report on Lotus' doings. Amy is the biggest Lotus uber-fan I've ever seen; she thoroughly deserves the adventure after defeating some strong opposition.

Razzmatazz accompanied a US Grand Prix press conference, which happened on Tuesday but was still dominating F1-related talk yesterday. MotoGP will be visiting the track from 2013, meaning F1 won't be the only major international race at the Circuit of the Americas.

A new season of British F3 is nearly here and Leigh's been previewing it – the second part appeared yesterday and it's very good reading.

New face on Twitter; cheery three-time F1 race winner Johnny Herbert has joined the social network and is still getting used to how popular he is.

Perhaps I have forgotten something? Oh yes, there's a race weekend in China with practise starting on Friday^. Even the Force India counter agrees for once.

Remember Bahrain? They still want an F1 race this year – if they can sort out the politics in time.

Epic performances from Sebastian Vettel have convinced Fernando Alonso that he has no chance of winning at the moment; not exactly the greatest of omens for race excitement, but we live in hope.

Many people are currently debating the utility of the adjustable rear wing. With the FIA deciding to start the DRS zone halfway down the back straight in China, we may finally get a conclusive answer... ...if it doesn't rain in the race.

India's next generation is getting the chance to have its talent discovered through a three-stage tournament devised by Force India called “One From a Billion”. It will happen every 2 years and is open to 14-17-year-olds. Both of India's F1 drivers are from Tamil Nadu, so hopefully the 7 locations for the regional heats> should help spread motorsport participation and awareness.

Oh, and spare a thought for Stuart C, who's currently at the Rally Jordan waiting for the racing to start. Nothing's happened today (which should have been the first day) because the service park hasn't fully arrived yet.

Distractions don't get much bigger than That Could Be My Next Tweet. The results were sometimes revealing, occasionally strange but mostly pretty hilarious.

Exercise is becoming a popular topic at Sidepodcast – Rubbergoat's been running and Christine's road running campaign continues apace. Makes me feel a bit lazy...

Linguistic practise for everyone: Spanish Wednesday is here, with Fernando fun to try translating.

Looks like Jordan F1 is planning an essay on the subject of F1 faring badly in the USA. Should be a good read when it's ready.

Apparently Sidepodders' significance as Internet racing experts cannot be overestimated ;)

Census forms in the UK have been getting posted to the people who process these things with a whole variety of unexpected property included...

Helping the #mfc revolution is the new idea from Zinio of making magazines that have audio, video, movement and work on every device... ...except dead trees.

I thought it was only racing drivers who were supposed to pilot badly and hit stuff...

* - “Nín hǎo” is the phonetic transliteration of the Simplified Chinese for “hello”.

** - Embargoed initially, leading to possibly the most excitement I've ever seen on Sidepodcast^^. The Sidepodcommunity is a very supportive one :)

^ - Since the last two links go to Viva F1, now is a good time to also read Leigh's guest post there on the subject of “Prince Bira”.

^^ - Everyone's mileage may vary, my views may not represent the totality of the community, etc.

Finally, the letters I've emboldened at the start of each paragraph spell something. Can anyone guess what it is?

See you in the Daily, Sidepodders!

    Oooohh lot's of linkables

A lot of the links are to the points yesterday where they were discussed, and also I tried to follow the good example of everyone else who's posted up to now to try to summarise the state of the Sidepodnation and assorted other things.

After looking at schedules it appears that KL to Seoul is roughly a 6 hour flight. Melbourne to Mokpo is going to be a looooong trip :D

Looking at the flights has me all confused because it looks like there'll be quite a wait in KL as well between flights as all the Seoul ones take off before the Melbourne ones land. I'm sure once they send me the details I'll have a clearer picture :)

    Capping should be banned

  • Alison14/04/2011 at 00:12

I've just realised I won't be able to watch any of the BBC coverage this weekend because my internet is about to be capped :(

    BOOOOO?! When is it non-capped??

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:13

    Capping should be banned

our ISP is awful, once you breach your on-peak data allowance they restrict your speed 24/7 to 64kps. Our old ISP would let you keep your full speed off-peak data and would only restrict you to 1mbps so the internet was more than useable. 64kps is a joke, no point even trying to use the internet when its that slow

My flatmate downloaded a 10gb HD movie file and used up 20% of our onpeak data in one day :(

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:13

    BOOOOO?! When is it non-capped??

    not til the 21st

  • Alison14/04/2011 at 00:14

My flatmate downloaded a 10gb HD movie file and used up 20% of our onpeak data in one day :(

    Errrrrm why would you move??

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:14

I might ring the ISP and see if they'll give us a one off data upgrade as a goodwill gesture, most of them seem to if you just ask, and if you don't try and do it every month. We've never come close to going over it before so that might help my cause.

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:15

    Errrrrm why would you move??

because our old ISP was our neighbours connection and they were ripping us off by making our flat pay almost all of the bills. When we got our own connection we couldnt go with the same ISP as they had no more capacity in our neighbourhood to connect new customers to the exchange.

  • Steven Roy14/04/2011 at 00:15

he was all proud of himself, demonstrating his awesome tv, I was not impressed. I told him in future he can download anything he wants, as long as he gets files that big between midnight and noon :)

For goodness sake, what kind of backwards system is this :P

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:18

For goodness sake, what kind of backwards system is this

one where one company with rubbish broadband plans has a monopoly over all the exchanges and resells capacity to the better ISPs but restricts the number of customers they can have :(

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:21

I wonder if my neighbours have changed their password since we stopped using their service. I also wonder if I have that password written down anywhere. Hmm.

  • Amy14/04/2011 at 00:23

it did but I've since wiped my computer and started fresh. My PSP might still have the settings in it because I haven't used it in months.

  • Alison14/04/2011 at 00:24

Does your computer not have it so that it would automatically log on

Presumably that's been turned off since they stopped using it. It'll need the password again.

The secret message is GRAN PREMIO DELL CHINESE, which I am guessing is Spanish for Chinese Grand Prix, as it looks Italian, but I know it is not Italian as there is not enough vowels ending a word. Nor it is French, so as my "romantic" languages go, that leaves Spanish....

Bah, you just copied my secret message idea from way back, with your original twist of using a foreign language. I know this as I swiped RG's brackety idea and tossed in a secret message when read vertically.

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)14/04/2011 at 01:44

The secret message is GRAN PREMIO DELL CHINESE, which I am guessing is Spanish for Chinese Grand Prix, as it looks Italian,

Nope, Spanish for that is "Gran Premio de China (pronounced "cheenah")

  • Jordan F114/04/2011 at 01:48

The secret message is GRAN PREMIO DELL CHINESE, which I am guessing is Spanish for Chinese Grand Prix, as it looks Italian,

Try it again. The words for Grand Prix are dead on. Check the Spanish for Chinese as adjective as in "Chinese people" not the phase "of China". Dell is one of those words in Spanish that will have multiple spellings based on the correct grammatical case.....

  • Jordan F114/04/2011 at 01:49

Alinora's too smart to screw up the correct grammar.....

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)14/04/2011 at 01:52

Try it again. The words for Grand Prix are dead on.

The phrase in Italian is "grande premio di cinese." Your call.

  • Jordan F114/04/2011 at 02:01

The first two words are correct in Spanish. It follows that the last two words are also in Spanish. now we just need an extact translation.

Basically, I think the word DELL means "of the" just like "De", "d'" or "De la" all mean "of the" in French, with the different spellings influenced by the differnent cases of the noun - mas, fem, of the next word starting with a vowel. English does not have this type of grammar except for ships and boats "she" or "her" even though it might have a male name.

The direct English translation would be "Grand Prix of the Chinese"

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)14/04/2011 at 02:07

The first two words are correct in Spanish. It follows that the last two words are also in Spanish. now we just need an extact translation.

My only qualifications are having S.American parents. You're right about the 1st two words. But there's no "dell" in Spanish, just 'del,' nor is there "Chinese", just "chino." But, you might be right that it's INTENDED Spanish ... just bad Spanish. Andale, Andale!

  • Jordan F114/04/2011 at 02:22

My limited French is Quebecor French. Great for getting around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal but the people in Paris, France would think that I was speaking some Africian language like Zulu.....

But like I said, it is not French, you proved it is not Italian, there's two words right in Spanish, and we are not currently pushing Portuguese in Sidepodcastland at the moment, what is left besides Latin ?

    hmmmmmmm.

  • Jordan F114/04/2011 at 02:26

Nope. Not Latin. Maybe it is Basque Spanish or Catalunyian Spanish or something weird....it that....

    It should be proper Spanish.....

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)14/04/2011 at 02:27

But like I said, it is not French, you proved it is not Italian, there's two words right in Spanish, and we are not currently pushing Portuguese in Sidepodcastland at the moment, what is left besides Latin ?

What is left might be just to decide that whoever wrote the phrase is semi-literate in the language. Or maybe it's Esperanto, which I know zero about. Gee, I wish we had a NASCAR fan in on this to set us straight! ;-)

  • Anthony (PTaruffi)14/04/2011 at 02:35

For what it's worth, here's the Portugese: grande prêmio do chinês. BTW, I'm no language expert, just a humble user of freetranslation.com

  • Jordan F114/04/2011 at 02:35

I like the idea that Ali just held down the "l" key a little bit too long.... The Chinese could be explained away that "Chinco" is pretty racist word to use against the Chinese in English. The word "Chinco" use to fly at asians when I was going up.

Well, that has been decyphered to death... I think I will shut down the Tundraland Electronic Intelligence Gathering Station for the night....

"With the FIA deciding to start the DRS zone halfway down the back straight in China, we may finally get a conclusive answer..."

But there's always overtaking at the end of the back straight, how will we know if it's because of DRS or not? :-)

Why not start it at the beginning of the straight just after the cars get to a decent speed? Shut it off halfway down, give the other guy a chance to re-pass into the corner under braking

I thought they'd want to improve overtaking into Turn 1 (cynically, if only because the main stands are there!)

It was supposed to be "GRAN PREMIO DELLA CHINESE", which is Italian for Chinese Grand Prix, but the "A" paragraph got trimmed. Well reasoned out, Jordan F1 :)

The main rally here at the moment, the desert Challenge was moved a couple of years ago, in preperation for this i think.

It used to be the major shakedown for the Dakar, but now it takes place in april so it is a lot more low key

    Some nice insight from Joe

    joesaward.wordpre…04/14/lap-charts/

Excellent, I've never seen a handwritten one before although some series now release PDFs of the electronic timing.

In the 60s and 70s the F1 drivers wives or girlfriends would sit on the pitwall and do the lapchart, with the team boss relying on it. There were even occasions when they corrected the official timekeepers when they'd got lost (also doing it largely manually). Seem to remember reading that Helen Stewart (Mrs JYS) was always very good at it.

I'd do it in Excel on a netbook personally.

I do a paper-based "incident report" for each race but would find lap-charting a tad tricky given the awful camera direction on TV these days. If I was at a race I think I'd cope.

I don't think the two force indias which benefitted from sauber's dsq in melbourne went through post-race scrutineering

They went through scrutineering, but to a limited level of detail. There's one level of scrutiny imposed on all finishers, another on those finishing in the top 10 and a third level of random "spot checks" on a proportion of the top 10 and/or cars which were particularly suspicious.

  • Alianora La Canta14/04/2011 at 11:56

Possible. It was said that the Pirellis are not so good at picking up marbles as the Bridgestones but I bet it's still possible to some extent.

    Interesting titbit from Petrov:

Petrov had another problem that fans could not see on television. He described how the little balls of rubber that fly off the treads of the cars in front and that litter the track become projectiles flying at the driver throughout the race.

“I think I received quite a lot from Ferrari, and it even comes straight into your visor,” said said. “I think I had three or four shots. And off the racing line it is a disaster. If it hit your hand it would definitely hurt, but it depends how big it is and how fast.”

Having seen HGV drivers using GPS to try to get down a road that's barely single-file, I remain slightly dubious about its utility in the absence of a driver with a reasonable amount of intelligence and common sense - which you probably have but Mike Gascoyne's driver probably does not.

Question: does anyone know when/if Vettel turned his KERS on again after lap 29 in malaysia?

  • Steven Roy14/04/2011 at 19:07

Question: does anyone know when/if Vettel turned his KERS on again after lap 29 in malaysia?

He did use it but I don't know when. He was told it had a problem at the start of the race and he had a problem with it at the end of the race but somewhere in the middle it worked for a short time.

  • Rubbergoat14/04/2011 at 19:11

looks like the end of spotify:

From May 1, Spotify users in the UK and Ireland who signed up to the service before November 1 last year will only be able to play individual tracks for free up to a maximum of five times a month.

    brand new customers only.

Saw that on the BBC News site earlier, stupid stupid. I wasn't planning on paying (mind you the iPad app only works if you have a paid Spotify a/c).

would love to see Chinese Dr Who though. They go into the tardis, run around, everything shakes a little bit and they could out in the exact same place they went in from but a whole minute forward in the future!

I imagine it would get boring though, they'd end up just wandering around shops waiting several decades or centuries for something to happen until Series 68 and something actually does happen seeing as by then real time has reached 2056

Note to self - stop playing dramatic movie pieces on ipod when walking about the house. Mum wondered what on earth was going on as I grabbed the biscuit tin in slow motion as the john murphy track playing during the strobe lightning bit of Kick Bum came on.

    Hah, brilliant :)

Biscuits, you served us all well.

    So say we all.

    Oh, wait, that's something else.

Am an absolute sucker for film soundtracks. I know I've enjoyed a film if I remember the music from it which is a bit wierd I suppose, as you'd thonk the on screen stuff would be more important!
